8 Introduction to Quixel Bridge and Engine Scalability — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:15and welcome back everyone to Unreal
- 0:16Engine beginner's guide to building an
- 0:18environment. In the last lesson, we left
- 0:20it off by getting ourselves a terrain
- 0:22set up and we just got ourselves a nice
- 0:25base to work with. And now we're going
- 0:27to continue working on our project and
- 0:30set up the bridge using QuickL assets.
- 0:33So before doing that though, I'd like
- 0:34you to know that I was currently working
- 0:36on the scalability set to low since I'm
- 0:39recording and I also have a reference
- 0:41project opened up uh in the second
- 0:43screen. This is just to help me to
- 0:46increase my performance uh during this
- 0:48course. But you'll be seeing me going in
- 0:51between high and low just to see how
- 0:53visually it looks like for the project.
- 0:55And I can do so by clicking on this
- 0:57button over here and setting it from
- 0:59low. If I were to set it to high, I
- 1:01think by default it's going to be set as
- 1:02high. You can see the type of difference
- 1:04in lighting we're going to get. And of
- 1:06course, if you're having some issues
- 1:09with the performance throughout this
- 1:10video, just make sure to lower this from
- 1:12high to low. And if you're not seeing
- 1:15this kind of a button, because I think
- 1:16by default, you're not going to be
- 1:18seeing this. What you need to do is you
- 1:20need to go into the upper right corner
- 1:21over here and click on the settings. And
- 1:24then within this, you're going to find
- 1:26yourself an engine scalability settings.
- 1:28If you hover over with your mouse,
- 1:29you'll see the same kind of a menu that
- 1:31I had. So, by starting on and uh just
- 1:34clicking on any one of those, you should
- 1:36be able to get yourself a button up here
- 1:39on the upper left corner. Of course, you
- 1:41can change up the way your scalability
- 1:44is as well. And in general, that'll just
- 1:46help you to kind of work more fluently
- 1:50within your project. And I'm just
- 1:52letting you know right away though that
- 1:54you either want to go between low and
- 1:56high. You never want to go onto epic on
- 1:58set or cinematic in this case because
- 2:00these ones are like for the end results
- 2:02and we're going to be rendering out our
- 2:05entire project and that'll automatically
- 2:07set it up to be in cinematic mode. But
- 2:10by default you don't want to turn on the
- 2:12cinematic usually when you're working on
- 2:14building up your project. So either keep
- 2:17it on high or on low and that'll just
- 2:19give you the nice type of results. I
- 2:21think I'll keep it on high for now and
- 2:23in the future I might be switching that
- 2:25up from high to low. So yeah, going back
- 2:29to our project now. We're going to start
- 2:31on actually setting up this bridge area
- 2:34using Quickixel provided assets. So what
- 2:38is Quicksilver, you might ask? Well, by
- 2:41clicking on the quick to add uh to
- 2:43project, you're able to see a quick
- 2:46bridge. And what this is is basically an
- 2:49asset library built in within Unreal
- 2:51Engine. And it just has a lot of
- 2:53realistic props to work with. But if
- 2:56you're not seeing this real quick, if
- 2:58you're not seeing the Quixle Bridge uh
- 3:00asset library button in this area, what
- 3:03you'll have to do is you'll have to go
- 3:05onto edit and go on to plugins and then
- 3:08search for Quickixel
- 3:09like so. And then you'll see a quick
- 3:12bridge. By default, it should be
- 3:13enabled, but just to make sure make sure
- 3:16that this is enabled. And then when
- 3:17you're resetting it, you you should also
- 3:19have it within your Epic Games launcher
- 3:22and something underneath the version of
- 3:25your launcher, something called install
- 3:26plugins. If you click on it, you should
- 3:28also see the quick bridge to be within
- 3:31this area over here. So just make sure
- 3:34that this is enabled. And if it is,
- 3:38which by default it should be, you
- 3:40should have yourself a quick bridge
- 3:43button. And now once we press on it,
- 3:45we'll open up ourselves a window with
- 3:47the quicksell bridge assets, all of them
- 3:50with a bunch of different categories and
- 3:52whatnot. And by default, I think you
- 3:55should need to sign up first. So on the
- 3:58upper right corner, just click on the
- 4:01profile like this. And then you should
- 4:03be able to sign in because otherwise
- 4:05you're not able to download any of the
- 4:07access from the quicks bridge. you need
- 4:09to be signing in using the same way you
- 4:12signed up to your Epic Games launcher.
- 4:15And basically that'll just allow you to
- 4:17make use all of those assets for free
- 4:19because that is how they're linked in to
- 4:21your um project. But anyway, moving on.
- 4:24What we have on the left side is the
- 4:26home button, which will show you the
- 4:28latest items within the Quicksilver
- 4:30Bridge. Then the next one we have
- 4:32collections. What'll show you is a bunch
- 4:34of assets that are related to one
- 4:36another. And this is a nice way to get a
- 4:39same styled assets. And then once we go
- 4:42on one of them, we'll see a bunch of
- 4:44related assets that have everything
- 4:46within that collection, which is pretty
- 4:48nice to use. Then the next one, what we
- 4:51have on the left side is something
- 4:52called Metahumans, which is something
- 4:54that you might use if you want to have
- 4:56some characters within your scene. And
- 4:59afterwards, we have your favorites. I
- 5:00don't usually use the favorites, so it's
- 5:02going to be empty. And then finally we
- 5:04have locals which if you don't have
- 5:06anything downloaded you'll see this as
- 5:08empty. What this will do is basically
- 5:10when we download ourselves an asset from
- 5:13the quick bridge it'll store it within
- 5:15your computer and then afterwards you
- 5:17can make use out of the local storage
- 5:19and kind of just drag it into your scene
- 5:22in a really simple and quick way. But
- 5:25yeah going back to the uh default home
- 5:28screen on the top section what we have
- 5:30is a search bar. And the way the search
- 5:33bar works in this case for the quick
- 5:35bridge is it just has keywords that you
- 5:38able to search for. So every new word is
- 5:40going to be a separate keyword. So for
- 5:42example, if we want something that's
- 5:44wood and that's decoration,
- 5:47we're going to get ourselves that's
- 5:50something that is class classified as
- 5:52wood and decoration. Not only does it
- 5:53search something that is within the name
- 5:56of the asset, it also searches something
- 5:59on its category. So, for example, if I
- 6:01were to click on one of the assets like
- 6:03so and select it, it will get ourselves
- 6:06a details tab of this asset on the right
- 6:08side. And this will give you some nice
- 6:10information. But firstly, what we'll
- 6:12need to know is that it'll show you an
- 6:14image on the top right corner. And then
- 6:16it'll give you a name. And then
- 6:17afterwards, it'll give you a bunch of
- 6:20categorizations for this asset. So, for
- 6:22example, right now because we wrote in
- 6:24wood and decoration, you'll see that
- 6:25this is going to be wooden and it also
- 6:29has decorative tag on them. And this
- 6:31will basically just allow you to get all
- 6:33of these assets through its tags. We can
- 6:35even actually click on the tag itself.
- 6:39So, for example, if I were to click on
- 6:40wooden, it'll put it in the search bar
- 6:43right away, and it'll show you all of
- 6:45the assets that have that tag related to
- 6:47them, which is a really nice way of
- 6:50trying to find whichever assets you
- 6:52want. And going down the tab of this
- 6:54asset, we also have additional
- 6:56information. So, the size one is quite a
- 7:00useful tool to have, which it'll tell
- 7:02you basically how big an asset is. Of
- 7:05course, within our scene, we can just
- 7:08scale the size and have it in any shape
- 7:11of a scale that we want. But by default,
- 7:15we'll see that for example, this is the
- 7:17item on the right side. And we have a
- 7:20human uh an average human height in
- 7:23comparison. And as you can see, it will
- 7:26give a smaller kind of a version of a
- 7:29prop in comparison to the human scale.
- 7:32If I were to select something larger,
- 7:34for example, like this staircase, we can
- 7:37see that the size for it is going to be
- 7:39much larger. And so that's something to
- 7:42keep in mind when selecting your props.
- 7:45And afterwards, what we have, if we
- 7:47scroll down, we have related assets.
- 7:49Sometimes it shows you what collection
- 7:52it belongs to, and sometimes it shows
- 7:54you just an asset group and its parents
- 7:57of what we're able to pick from. So for
- 8:00example, if I were to pick another asset
- 8:02and see it's related assets, it's not
- 8:05actually going to show me the way I want
- 8:07it to be as an example. But let's say I
- 8:10want to try picking. There you go. If I
- 8:13try to picking module my internal start,
- 8:16I can see that it not only has related
- 8:19assets, if we scroll down a little bit,
- 8:20it also has related collection. So this
- 8:23is where it kind of has all of those
- 8:25items that are belonging within that
- 8:27environment. So that is quite nice. I
- 8:30don't think yeah not every collection is
- 8:33being assigned to an item but for
- 8:35example if we were to go to a mine we
- 8:37can see all of the items that has been
- 8:40used for this specific environment that
- 8:43we see in an image which is quite nice
- 8:45or when we want to have a nice kind of a
- 8:48group and we just want to set up
- 8:50environment based on those items. But
- 8:53yes, going back to
- 8:55Quicksixel Bridge and what we need right
- 8:57now is we're actually going to click on
- 8:59X to remove the search from this area.
- 9:02And we're going to search for a small
- 9:04wood boards or just we can actually
- 9:06search for wood boards like so. Click
- 9:09enter. And of course, it'll be setting
- 9:10it up into two categories like so. And
- 9:13what we'll notice is that it has uh two
- 9:16categories within the Quickixel Bridge.
- 9:18We have free assets, surface, and
- 9:20decals. And throughout the course, we're
- 9:22going to be covering all of them. But
- 9:24right now, we're just going to go onto
- 9:25the free 3D assets, which will contain
- 9:28all of the assets with this category.
- 9:31And if you notice, we are actually
- 9:33getting this category placed right into
- 9:36the search bar. And actually, we're
- 9:38going to get ourselves a couple of
- 9:40choices, but what we want is we want to
- 9:42make sure we get ourselves a small wood
- 9:45boards. Now, but because I used them
- 9:48previously to set up the scores, I'm
- 9:50going to have them downloaded. But
- 9:53before you should be seeing something
- 9:55like a download button if you don't have
- 9:57it downloaded to your local storage. And
- 10:00if you're not seeing the download button
- 10:02and you're only seeing sign up button,
- 10:04you should be clicking on it and making
- 10:06sure you sign up to your Epic Games
- 10:08launcher. And then afterwards, you'll be
- 10:10able to click download, which will
- 10:11download your item like so. And once
- 10:15you're done, you should have an add
- 10:17button highlighted. And actually, before
- 10:20even doing that, what I'd like to talk
- 10:21about is the medium quality. And by
- 10:24default, we're getting ourselves some
- 10:26nice presets for low quality, medium
- 10:28quality, high quality, and nanite. And I
- 10:31know it's tempting to start off with
- 10:33night straight away, but that'll give
- 10:35you really high resolution of texture
- 10:38maps. And I recommend you to not start
- 10:40it off right away with this one unless
- 10:42you want to build some really close-up
- 10:44shots because otherwise it's going to be
- 10:46quite performance heavy. So by default,
- 10:48I recommend you staying with the medium
- 10:50quality and unless you really want to
- 10:52get some really close-up shots, that is
- 10:55exactly what we're just going to be
- 10:56using throughout this entire course. So
- 10:59by sticking with the medium quality,
- 11:01you're going to get great results
- 11:02nevertheless. And then afterwards, if
- 11:04you want to enable nanite, we can do so
- 11:06later on ourselves since it's that is
- 11:09quite simple to do. So yeah, by simply
- 11:12downloading our small wood boards and
- 11:15then afterwards clicking add button over
- 11:18here, we're going to get ourselves this
- 11:21added onto our content browser. And I'm
- 11:24just going to close down the quick
- 11:26bridge real quick, like so. And we can
- 11:29see what we're going to get. By default,
- 11:31it should straight away drop you into
- 11:33this area like so. But if you're not
- 11:35seeing this within the content browser,
- 11:37you should be getting yourselves a mega
- 11:40scans folder. If we click on it, then
- 11:42it's going to give us 3D assets
- 11:44category. And we click on that again,
- 11:47then it's going to give us small
- 11:49woodboards folder. And if we click on
- 11:51that, this is exactly what is going to
- 11:53bring us into our content browser, which
- 11:56is quite nice. And yeah, before we move
- 11:59on though, I'd like us to set up the
- 12:01assets that we need to set it up for
- 12:03this bridge. And we're just going to go
- 12:05on to the quick bridge back onto its
- 12:08window. And we're going to get ourselves
- 12:10some of the assets before we continue
- 12:12on. So we could have everything prepped
- 12:14up. And I think the next one that we
- 12:17need is going to be something called
- 12:19wooden pole. So let's go ahead and
- 12:20search for that. And we're going to get
- 12:23some nice assets within it. And this is
- 12:25the one that we're going to need. So,
- 12:27let's go ahead and se select it. Old
- 12:29wooden pole. Then, let's go ahead and
- 12:31download it and then add it onto our
- 12:34project. Just like that. Now, because we
- 12:37were previously on to our old Mega Scans
- 12:40folder, it'll just create a new asset
- 12:44with a different folder and it's not
- 12:45going to open it up within our content
- 12:47browser. But just seeing this on the
- 12:50left hand side that it creates a new
- 12:52folder. We can see that it added up a
- 12:55new item onto our project. So going back
- 12:59though onto our quick bridge, we will
- 13:02also need something called a wooden
- 13:04beam. So if we were to search for wood
- 13:06beam like so, we'll get a couple of
- 13:09options. And just to limit our entire
- 13:11selection, we're just going to click on
- 13:13the 3D assets and search for our assets
- 13:15through this way. And by scrolling down,
- 13:18we're going to be able to see a couple
- 13:19of options for us to pick from. And the
- 13:22ones that we actually need are going to
- 13:24be the ones over here. And we're going
- 13:26to pick the wooden post. And we're going
- 13:30to pick a
- 13:32wooden beam,
- 13:34uh, another wooden beam,
- 13:37and worn wooden beam. So, these three,
- 13:40the ones that we see over here, are the
- 13:42ones that we're going to be using. And
- 13:44there are a couple of other choices
- 13:46which also look pretty nice actually,
- 13:48but these are the three choices that
- 13:50we're going to stick with. And actually,
- 13:52we have another one, the wooden post
- 13:54that I have it downloaded, but we're
- 13:55going to be using that for the house.
- 13:57And for now, we're just going to make
- 13:58sure that these three are downloaded.
- 14:01So, let's go ahead and once we have it
- 14:03downloaded within our project, we're
- 14:05going to click add for every single one
- 14:08of them. And as you can see on the left
- 14:10side over here on the bottom left side
- 14:12within our project, we're going to see
- 14:14our folder growing. So that's quite
- 14:18nice. So now we have multiple assets and
- 14:21each one of them has its own static
- 14:24mesh. So that is going to be quite nice
- 14:26for us to work with. And al also not
- 14:30only should we have those, we're going
- 14:32to delete our search and we're going to
- 14:35search for a rope as well. So, rope 3D
- 14:40assets and then we're going to get a
- 14:42couple of choices for the rope actually.
- 14:45And yeah, we're going to be using
- 14:48hanging rope bundle. This one over here.
- 14:51And let's go ahead and download it and
- 14:54click add. And afterwards, we're going
- 14:56to need to get ourselves a bundled rope
- 15:00coil. So, these ones are just going to
- 15:02be used as props for breaking up the
- 15:04edges for our bridge and just making it
- 15:06look nicer overall within our scene. And
- 15:10once we have them set up within our
- 15:12area, we're going to be pretty much
- 15:14leaving it as is. And then in the next
- 15:17lesson, we're going to be making use out
- 15:19of all of these assets that we just
- 15:21downloaded and added into our project
- 15:23and build ourselves a nice bridge to be
- 15:25sitting at the edge of this environment.
- 15:29So, thank you so much for watching and
- 15:31I'll see you in a bit.
