7 Types Of People You Must Not Help (Biblical Warning) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00There is something nobody tells you when
- 0:02you step into your calling as a generous
- 0:04[music] person. Nobody warns you that
- 0:07your greatest acts of love can become
- 0:09your greatest traps.
- 0:11Nobody sits you down and says [music]
- 0:13that pouring into the wrong people can
- 0:15leave you hollow, burned out, and far
- 0:18from the life God actually designed for
- 0:21you.
- 0:21>> [music]
- 0:22>> But the Bible does.
- 0:23And today we are going to look at what
- 0:26scripture says about seven specific
- 0:29types of people God is warning you to
- 0:32stop helping. Not because love is wrong,
- 0:35but because wisdom is required.
- 0:38Proverbs chapter 4 verse 7 says, "Wisdom
- 0:41is the principal thing. Therefore, get
- 0:44wisdom and with all thy getting get
- 0:47understanding."
- 0:49That means your generosity must be
- 0:51governed by something greater than
- 0:53emotion. It must be governed by
- 0:55discernment.
- 0:57Because there is a very real difference
- 0:59between being a blessing and being an
- 1:02enabler. And if you do not know that
- 1:05difference, people will drain you dry
- 1:07while calling it your Christian duty.
- 1:11Jesus himself understood this.
- 1:14He walked away from certain people.
- 1:17He did not chase the rich young ruler.
- 1:21He warned in Matthew chapter 7 verse 6
- 1:26not to cast your pearls before swine.
- 1:29And in John chapter 2 verse 24, he did
- 1:33not entrust himself to people whose
- 1:35hearts were not right.
- 1:37If the Son of God set boundaries, you
- 1:39have the full permission of heaven to do
- 1:42the same.
- 1:43So let us walk through these seven types
- 1:46of people together and let the word of
- 1:48God bring the clarity your spirit has
- 1:52been quietly waiting for.
- 1:55The first type of person you must stop
- 1:57helping is the lazy and idle.
- 2:00Now, hear me clearly because there is a
- 2:03critical difference between someone
- 2:05going through a hard season and someone
- 2:08who has chosen comfort over
- 2:10responsibility as a lifestyle.
- 2:13The Bible is not gentle about this
- 2:16distinction.
- 2:18Proverbs chapter 10 verse 4 says, "Lazy
- 2:21hands make for poverty, but diligent
- 2:24hands bring wealth."
- 2:26Laziness in scripture is not treated as
- 2:29a circumstance.
- 2:31It is treated as a choice and it carries
- 2:34consequences.
- 2:36The Apostle Paul was so direct on this
- 2:39that he told the church in Thessalonica
- 2:41in 2 Thessalonians chapter 3 verse 10,
- 2:45"If anyone is not willing to work, let
- 2:47him not eat."
- 2:49That sounds harsh to modern ears, but it
- 2:52is a principle of divine accountability.
- 2:56God designed life so that we reap what
- 2:59we sow and when you constantly rescue
- 3:01[music] a person who refuses to sow
- 3:03anything, you interrupt the very system
- 3:06God put in place to teach them. You are
- 3:08not helping them grow.
- 3:10You are keeping them comfortable in a
- 3:13place God is trying to move them out of.
- 3:16In Matthew chapter 25 verses 24 to 30,
- 3:21the servant who buried his talent
- 3:23[music] rather than investing it was not
- 3:26rewarded for his fear. He was called
- 3:28wicked and lazy and even what he had was
- 3:32taken away.
- 3:34Some people are not stuck because the
- 3:36devil is fighting them, they are stuck
- 3:38because they refuse to move and when you
- 3:41keep rescuing them from the weight of
- 3:43their own choices, you are not being
- 3:45compassionate.
- 3:47You are delaying the very correction
- 3:50that could change their life.
- 3:52The most loving thing you can do for a
- 3:54person committed to idleness is to step
- 3:58back, pray for them, and let God's
- 4:01design do what your generosity never
- 4:04could.
- 4:05That leads us directly into the second
- 4:08type of person you must stop helping,
- 4:10and this one will sting because most of
- 4:13us have experienced it firsthand, the
- 4:16ungrateful. Ungratefulness is not just a
- 4:20bad habit.
- 4:22It is a revealing of the heart. In Luke
- 4:25chapter 17, verses 17 to 18,
- 4:28>> [music]
- 4:28>> Jesus heals 10 lepers and only one
- 4:32returns to give thanks.
- 4:34Jesus notices.
- 4:36>> [music]
- 4:36>> He specifically asks about the other
- 4:39nine.
- 4:40And that question is one we need to sit
- 4:43with because there are people in all of
- 4:46our lives who have been lifted, carried,
- 4:49and covered by our sacrifice, and have
- 4:52never once looked back to acknowledge
- 4:54it.
- 4:55Paul warns in 2 Timothy chapter 3, verse
- 4:582, that in the last days, people will be
- 5:01lovers of themselves, lovers of money,
- 5:04ungrateful, and unholy.
- 5:07Ungratefulness is listed right alongside
- 5:11godlessness because it comes from the
- 5:13same root, a heart that refuses to
- 5:16acknowledge where its blessings come
- 5:19from.
- 5:20Helping an ungrateful person is like
- 5:23pouring water into a vessel with no
- 5:25bottom to the bod. The more you give,
- 5:28the more they expect.
- 5:31And Proverbs chapter 17, verse 13, warns
- 5:35that evil will never leave the house of
- 5:38one who repays good with evil.
- 5:42Some people will take your sacrifice and
- 5:45use it against you.
- 5:47Gratitude is a gateway to increase.
- 5:50When Jesus fed the 5,000 in John chapter
- 5:536 verse 11, he gave thanks before
- 5:58distributing. [music]
- 5:591 Thessalonians chapter 5 verse 18
- 6:02commands us to give thanks in all
- 6:05circumstances because gratitude
- 6:07positions you for more.
- 6:10You are not called to keep pouring your
- 6:12best into people who will never
- 6:14acknowledge the hand God used to reach
- 6:16them.
- 6:17Now, if the ungrateful will drain your
- 6:20resources, the proud and arrogant will
- 6:23drain your wisdom. And that brings us to
- 6:26the third type.
- 6:28Proverbs chapter 16 verse 18 is one of
- 6:31the most quoted and least heeded verses
- 6:34in all of scripture.
- 6:37Pride goes before destruction and a
- 6:40haughty spirit before a fall.
- 6:43Proud people are not just difficult to
- 6:45help. They are impossible to help
- 6:48because they do not believe they need
- 6:50it.
- 6:51James chapter 4 verse 6 tells us God
- 6:54himself opposes the proud but gives
- 6:57grace to the humble.
- 6:59When you try to help an arrogant person,
- 7:01>> [music]
- 7:01>> you are pushing against someone God is
- 7:04already resisting.
- 7:07Think about King Nebuchadnezzar in
- 7:09Daniel chapter 4 verse 30. At the peak
- 7:13of his power, he looked over his kingdom
- 7:16and declared that he had built it by his
- 7:18own mighty power.
- 7:21The moment those words left his mouth,
- 7:23judgment fell. He lost his mind, lived
- 7:27like an animal in the wilderness for 7
- 7:29years, and was only restored when he
- 7:32humbled himself before God.
- 7:35Think about Pharaoh in the book of
- 7:37Exodus,
- 7:38>> [music]
- 7:38>> warned 10 times, given 10 opportunities
- 7:42to bow, and yet his pride hardened him
- 7:46until his army was swallowed by the sea.
- 7:49Proverbs chapter 26 verse 12 says,
- 7:53"There is more hope for a fool than for
- 7:56someone who is wise in their own eyes."
- 7:59If someone believes they have nothing to
- 8:01learn, you are not equipped to teach
- 8:03them.
- 8:04Only hardship can reach them now, and
- 8:07sometimes the wisest thing you can do is
- 8:10get out of the way and let it.
- 8:13And speaking of people God is already
- 8:15dealing with, the fourth type of person
- 8:18you must stop helping is the wicked and
- 8:21sinful. Specifically, those who have no
- 8:24desire to change.
- 8:26Psalm chapter 1 verse 1 says, "Blessed
- 8:30is the one who does not walk in step
- 8:32with the wicked." God's love covers
- 8:35everyone, but God's approval is not
- 8:39automatic.
- 8:40There is a sharp difference between a
- 8:43sinner who repents and a person who
- 8:46embraces wickedness as an identity.
- 8:49Romans chapter 1 verse 32 warns that
- 8:54those who not only continue in darkness
- 8:57but approve of others doing the same
- 8:59have positioned themselves
- 9:01>> [music]
- 9:01>> entirely against God.
- 9:04The stories of Jezebel, Cain, and Judas
- 9:07all carry the same thread. They were
- 9:10warned. They refused to turn.
- 9:13And their ends were devastating.
- 9:16You can love someone deeply and still
- 9:19refuse to partner with what God has
- 9:22already condemned in their life. Pray
- 9:25for them. Speak truth to them.
- 9:28But do not let your presence become the
- 9:30cushion that keeps them comfortable in
- 9:32rebellion, because at some point comfort
- 9:36becomes complicity.
- 9:38The fifth type flows naturally from
- 9:40this,
- 9:40>> [music]
- 9:41>> and it is the foolish.
- 9:43Let us be precise about what the Bible
- 9:45means by a fool, because this is widely
- 9:48misunderstood.
- 9:50A fool is not someone with low
- 9:52intelligence.
- 9:53A fool is someone who hears wisdom and
- 9:56deliberately rejects it.
- 9:59Proverbs chapter 26 verse 11 describes a
- 10:02fool as a dog returning to its vomit,
- 10:05going back again and again to the same
- 10:08destruction after being delivered from
- 10:11it.
- 10:12Proverbs chapter 13 verse 20 says, "A
- 10:15companion of fools suffers harm." You do
- 10:18not have to be foolish yourself to be
- 10:21damaged by a fool. Their proximity alone
- 10:25costs you.
- 10:27Proverbs chapter 23 verse 9 warns
- 10:30plainly,
- 10:32"Do not speak to fools, for they will
- 10:34scorn your prudent words."
- 10:36Some of you have been in this exhausting
- 10:39cycle of advising the same person about
- 10:42the same mistakes and watching them
- 10:44return to the same destruction, and you
- 10:47wonder why you feel so depleted.
- 10:50It is because you have been watering
- 10:52ground that has not been prepared to
- 10:54receive it.
- 10:56At a certain point, continuing to
- 10:58counsel someone who will not receive it
- 11:01stops being love and starts being a
- 11:04cycle you need to exit for both your
- 11:07sakes.
- 11:08Now, the sixth type [music] is perhaps
- 11:11the most dangerous of all because they
- 11:14are often the hardest to identify, and
- 11:17that is the dishonest and manipulative.
- 11:21Proverbs chapter 12 verse 22 says, "The
- 11:25Lord detests lying lips, but delights in
- 11:29people who are trustworthy."
- 11:31Manipulation is not just a personality
- 11:34flaw. It is a spiritual weapon.
- 11:37Second Corinthians chapter 11 verse 14
- 11:41reminds us that Satan himself
- 11:44masquerades as an angel of light.
- 11:47The most dangerous manipulators are the
- 11:50ones who appear the most sincere.
- 11:54They know how to cry at the right
- 11:56moment. They know how to make you feel
- 11:59like refusing them makes you a bad
- 12:01Christian.
- 12:02They know exactly which words will
- 12:05soften your resistance.
- 12:08Proverbs chapter 26 verses 24 to 26
- 12:12says, "Enemies disguise themselves with
- 12:15their lips, but in their hearts they
- 12:18harbor deceit."
- 12:20If someone has a consistent pattern of
- 12:22shifting stories, guilt-tripping you
- 12:25into giving, only appearing when they
- 12:27need something, and never owning their
- 12:29part in anything, your discernment is
- 12:32not judgment.
- 12:34It is protection. [music]
- 12:36God called you to walk in wisdom, and
- 12:39wisdom sometimes looks like a closed
- 12:42hand.
- 12:43That brings us to the seventh and final
- 12:46type, and this one requires the most
- 12:49spiritual maturity to navigate rightly,
- 12:52the unrepentant.
- 12:55Hebrews chapter 10 verse 26 says, "If we
- 12:58deliberately keep on sinning after
- 13:01receiving the knowledge of the truth, no
- 13:03sacrifice for sins is left."
- 13:06There is a profound difference between
- 13:09struggling and refusing.
- 13:11Some people do not want to be delivered.
- 13:14They want to be comforted in their sin.
- 13:17They want your presence to soften the
- 13:19consequences rather than confront the
- 13:21cause.
- 13:23In the parable of the prodigal son in
- 13:25Luke chapter 15 verses 11 to 32, the
- 13:29father did not chase after the son when
- 13:32he left. He did not rescue him from the
- 13:35pigpen. He let him go.
- 13:38End quote.
- 13:39And it was only in the depth of that low
- 13:41place, hungry, broken, and surrounded by
- 13:45what his choices had produced, that the
- 13:47son came to his senses and turned back
- 13:51toward home.
- 13:52Proverbs chapter 29 verse one says,
- 13:56"Whoever remains stiff-necked after many
- 13:59rebukes will suddenly be destroyed
- 14:02without remedy. Some people need to hit
- 14:04the bottom before they will ever look
- 14:07up."
- 14:08And if you keep rushing in to pad that
- 14:11bottom with your resources,
- 14:13>> [music]
- 14:13>> your time, and your emotional energy,
- 14:16you are not shortening their suffering.
- 14:19You are extending it. Step back.
- 14:22Pray without ceasing.
- 14:25Speak truth when the door opens.
- 14:29And trust that God knows exactly how
- 14:31much pressure is needed [music] to break
- 14:33the right thing in the right person at
- 14:36the right time.
- 14:38So, here is where we land. God did not
- 14:41call you to pour yourself out for people
- 14:43who are committed to staying empty.
- 14:46There are people in your world right now
- 14:48who are genuinely ready to grow, ready
- 14:51to receive, ready to be transformed by
- 14:54the grace of God working through your
- 14:56generosity.
- 14:58But you will have nothing left to give
- 15:00them if you keep spending everything you
- 15:03have on the seven types of people this
- 15:06word just described.
- 15:09Before you go anywhere, I want you to
- 15:11pause right where you are and pray this
- 15:14with me. Father, give me the wisdom to
- 15:18help who you have called me to help and
- 15:20the courage to release who you have not.
- 15:24Protect my heart from manipulation.
- 15:27Protect my resources from misuse and
- 15:30protect my calling from the weight of
- 15:33burdens that were never mine to carry.
- 15:36Teach me to give with open hands and
- 15:40walk with discerning eyes.
- 15:43Let everything I pour out be led by your
- 15:45spirit and not by guilt or fear in
- 15:49Jesus' name.
- 15:51Now, I want to hear from you. Drop a
- 15:53comment below and be honest with
- 15:55yourself. Which one of these seven types
- 15:58have you been pouring into thinking it
- 16:01was God's will when really it was
- 16:04quietly draining you.
- 16:06Type the number in the comments right
- 16:08now. You might say something that saves
- 16:11somebody else from making the same
- 16:12mistake. God bless you and I will see
- 16:15you in the next one.
