7 Sculpting Large Scale Terrain — Transcript

- 0:14Hello and welcome back everyone to
- 0:16Unreal Engine 5 beginner's guide to
- 0:18building an environment. In the last
- 0:20lesson, we left it off by starting on
- 0:22working on a larger scale within our
- 0:24landscape and building up a bit of a
- 0:27shape for where the water would go. And
- 0:30this time, we're going to continue on
- 0:32working on this terrain and actually get
- 0:34some of the work done for the larger
- 0:36parts of this area. So, let's go ahead
- 0:38and get started. We got ourselves a
- 0:40couple of hills and we can now use them
- 0:42as a reference point for elevation. And
- 0:44actually we are going to just go ahead
- 0:46and get ourselves the second point over
- 0:48here that we continued on working with
- 0:51and just click and hold and then drag
- 0:52it. And this way we're basically have
- 0:55two elevation points that are slightly
- 0:58elevated above this overall terrain. So
- 1:00we can now use them both and build up
- 1:02this area over here. And although the
- 1:05camera is not going to be picking that
- 1:07up, we're going to be positioning our
- 1:09environment shot somewhere in this over
- 1:11here area. So, we need to just focus on
- 1:15kind of having some levels of elevation
- 1:17and then working with them later on. So,
- 1:20actually I am going to lower this down a
- 1:22little bit. This hill over here, I think
- 1:24it's going to be a little bit too small.
- 1:26And by the way, quick tip. If your
- 1:28camera is moving a little bit too slow
- 1:30when working with this large
- 1:31environment, you can go ahead and click
- 1:33on the upper right corner over here for
- 1:35the camera speed. And if you were to
- 1:37increase this uh let's say to a five,
- 1:39you'd be able to move around much
- 1:41faster. So that's quite nice. And
- 1:43alternatively,
- 1:45sometimes I like to when moving around
- 1:47use the mouse wheel to scroll down, for
- 1:49example, which will slow down your
- 1:51movement considerably. So while holding
- 1:54right click and WD while moving around
- 1:56and then using your mouse wheel, you can
- 1:59just basically change up the speed for
- 2:02your camera movement. So that's kind of
- 2:04a faster process for using this. But the
- 2:07downside of it though is that you can't
- 2:09exactly tell the type of a speed you're
- 2:11using. So right now, even though the
- 2:12camera speed is kept as the same for
- 2:15with the camera speed scaler being set
- 2:17as one as well, it's going to have a
- 2:20considerably considerably different uh
- 2:22speed. So if I use my mouse wheel and
- 2:24kind of drag it up and have much faster
- 2:26of a result for my movement, the type of
- 2:29speed shown here is going to be kept the
- 2:32same. So, that's the downside to having
- 2:35this kind of a faster method for
- 2:37changing the scale for your camera
- 2:40movement within the viewport. But
- 2:43anyway, I'm just going to kind of
- 2:44slightly increase it and have it be
- 2:47easier to work with this larger section
- 2:50over here. And I'm thinking about just
- 2:53again using the flatten tool. And
- 2:56actually, we're going to lower this down
- 2:57a little bit. So, I'm going to go back
- 2:58to the sculpt sculpt mode. going to hold
- 3:01shift and then lower it down a little
- 3:03bit. If you want your strength to be
- 3:05changed up the way it has the intensity
- 3:07on this area for when you're sculpting,
- 3:10you can change that using the tool
- 3:12strength. So, if you were to lower this
- 3:14down by quite a bit, it'll have a much
- 3:17uh nicer result for when we're changing
- 3:19the overall shape for the terrain. So,
- 3:22right now, for example, we change it to
- 3:24this amount. And if we were to change
- 3:27the tool strength to be a little bit
- 3:29higher, let's say to a seven. If we were
- 3:31to hold shift and left mouse button,
- 3:32it'll just lower down so much faster.
- 3:35But I'm going to change this to a value
- 3:36of 0.2 for now. And just going to
- 3:40actually we're going to go to the
- 3:42flatten tool, change the strength back
- 3:44back to 0.5. And just go to use uh this
- 3:48side over here and just kind of lower it
- 3:50down. So the elevation is going to be
- 3:52much nicer in regards to this area. So,
- 3:54I think that's going to be much nicer.
- 3:56Just going to check how this looks like.
- 3:58So, we're going to have basically three
- 4:00types of elevation from the bottom of
- 4:02this river. And it's going to be so much
- 4:04nicer. And I think in the background,
- 4:07we're going to have so much uh some
- 4:09silhouettes for some terrain as well.
- 4:11But that's going to be later on though.
- 4:13For now, let's just focus on this larger
- 4:15part of the elevation. And right now,
- 4:18since we have those kind of levels set
- 4:19up, I think I'm just going to get this
- 4:22over here. kind of work with the entire
- 4:25silhouette for this environment. I think
- 4:27that might be quite nice. So, we're
- 4:30going to have some terrain going
- 4:32sideways like so. Might maybe cut it off
- 4:35over here and just build it up like so.
- 4:39I think that's going to be quite nice. I
- 4:42think that'll do. So, now that we have
- 4:44it set like this, more or less, we can
- 4:46actually use a higher brush size. And if
- 4:50we were to increase it to something like
- 4:524,000
- 4:54like so, we can use this brush with the
- 4:58same elevation set from here. Or
- 5:00actually, I'll just lower this down a
- 5:02little bit and drag it outwards a little
- 5:04bit more like so. So this way we don't
- 5:08affect the elevation that's on a low
- 5:10here. So I'm just going to bring it
- 5:11outwards like so. Then set this to 4,000
- 5:14like so. And now we can make use out of
- 5:17this brush to change up a large scale of
- 5:20this terrain, which is pretty nice. So
- 5:23we're going to basically get this entire
- 5:26elevation to be higher. And because we
- 5:28changed the scale of the brush, of
- 5:30course, the brush falloff is also going
- 5:32to be changed. So we actually want to
- 5:34lower this down to a value of 0.2 and
- 5:37get ourselves a harder type of a brush.
- 5:39So this way our transition between those
- 5:42two elevations are going to be much
- 5:44steeper. So that's going to be much
- 5:45nicer. And I think that's going to be
- 5:47quite nice. So this is the type of
- 5:50elevation that we want. I reckon this is
- 5:52going to be quite nice. Now we need to
- 5:54think of where we want our river to
- 5:58start from. And looking at this, we
- 6:00might want to either have it from going
- 6:02from this side over here. Just going to
- 6:04lower my brush a little bit more. From
- 6:06this side over here, or this section
- 6:09over here. And actually, we might want
- 6:11to get ourselves a nice river coming
- 6:13from this end over here. So, I think I'm
- 6:16going to lower my brush even more and
- 6:19make some finer tweaks using this type
- 6:22of brush. And actually, we're going to
- 6:23set up start off by getting ourselves a
- 6:25nice terrain in this area over here,
- 6:28just like this one over here. So, it's
- 6:31going to kind of be pulled out from this
- 6:34section. And now the water is going to
- 6:36be able to be picked up from this area.
- 6:39Like so. I think that's going to be
- 6:41quite nice. Just got to make sure we
- 6:44have a nice transition between those
- 6:45edges, the corners. They don't they
- 6:47can't be too sharp, otherwise they're
- 6:49not going to look quite as nice. I think
- 6:51that's going to look really nice,
- 6:53actually. And now we got to figure out
- 6:55how we're going to set up the water. So,
- 6:58we're going to use a sculpt mode. sculpt
- 7:00mode to kind of lower this overall area
- 7:02for where the water is going to be
- 7:04flowing. And now we're going to lower
- 7:05the brush size even more. And tool
- 7:07strength, let's set it to a value of
- 7:100.2. And while holding shift, we're
- 7:12actually going to just lower this these
- 7:14kind of sections over here, like so. And
- 7:17we don't have to worry about it too much
- 7:18because we're actually going to come
- 7:19back to it in a bit after we're done uh
- 7:23changing up the overall uh terrain. So,
- 7:27I think this is going to be quite nice.
- 7:29Now we can go back and actually yeah
- 7:32when working with this let's make sure
- 7:33that we have more or less of a straight
- 7:35pattern like so. So we're going to have
- 7:38water coming down from here uh having a
- 7:41small waterfall over here and then
- 7:43another waterfall over here and then
- 7:44land it in this water body over here. So
- 7:48that's going to be quite nice. Now we're
- 7:50going to go use a flatten tool and kind
- 7:52of just fix up the edges for where we
- 7:54had the terrain to be deformed too much.
- 7:57I'm actually going to lower the overall
- 7:59brush size to be even smaller and set it
- 8:02to 50 for example. No, not 50. 50 is too
- 8:05much. 200. 200 seems to be just right.
- 8:08Of course, the brush size, the brush
- 8:09falloff has to be increased by quite a
- 8:11bit. Setting it to8 maybe would do quite
- 8:14well. So, when working with smaller
- 8:16brushes, we got to make sure we start
- 8:18off by having the flattened brush going
- 8:21from the side. And this way we're a able
- 8:23to kind of uh get the terrain level
- 8:27information from this end and kind of
- 8:28bring it to the side like so. So just
- 8:31holding left mouse button and dragging
- 8:32on out to the side is going to give us
- 8:34some really nice results. And we don't
- 8:36have to worry about too much of the
- 8:38shape for now as we're just making sure
- 8:40that the water is going to have a nice
- 8:43type of a flow for this type of a
- 8:46section over here. And we're only
- 8:48building a base terrain. We're going to
- 8:50break up the edges using our props later
- 8:53on. So, we're just going to make sure
- 8:55that we have a nice kind of foundation.
- 8:57Maybe even have a bit of a flow going
- 9:00from here. Like so. And I think that's
- 9:04going to look quite nice. We just got to
- 9:05make sure that we have a real nice base
- 9:09for the water section. Like so. And we
- 9:12can come back for when we're working
- 9:15with the water itself and make some
- 9:18finer adjustments. But for now, I think
- 9:20that's going to look quite all right. So
- 9:22yeah, that's going to look nice. I think
- 9:25that's going to be enough. And actually,
- 9:27we're going to go to the manage tool and
- 9:29delete the back sections over here. So
- 9:32we're going to select delete and delete
- 9:35all the ones at the back. So, let's go
- 9:37ahead and just click one by one like so
- 9:40and delete them just like that. I think
- 9:42we're going to leave them as is right
- 9:45now. That's going to look quite nice.
- 9:47So, because the camera is going to be
- 9:48like this, we're not going to be seeing
- 9:50the back faces. And we're just going to
- 9:52play around with some props to get
- 9:55something in the back. And I think
- 9:57that's going to be good for now. For
- 9:59this end though, we need to go to the
- 10:01sculpt mode. And actually, we're going
- 10:02to select the sculpt itself. We're going
- 10:05to increase the brush uh strength to be
- 10:07set as 08 and brush size we can increase
- 10:10that as well. And because of that let's
- 10:13go ahead and change the brush falloff to
- 10:150.5. So we can now actually sorry
- 10:18holding shift left mouse button we're
- 10:20going to lower this entire section like
- 10:22so. And that way we're just basically
- 10:24hiding the entire terrain's edge.
- 10:26Because otherwise, if we look at it from
- 10:29this angle, we can see that by default,
- 10:32we have some really sharp edges for the
- 10:35terrain. So, we want to make sure we
- 10:36hide those away. So, the easiest way
- 10:38would be to just kind of lowering them
- 10:41all down. And we don't have to worry
- 10:43about uh too much on how it's going to
- 10:45look like. Actually, better yet, if we
- 10:48have some more broken up parts, it's
- 10:50just going to help us with the
- 10:51silhouette for the rain. And then I'm
- 10:52just going to go all through the
- 10:54backside like so. And just kind of hover
- 10:56over my sculpt brush and lower
- 10:59everything around just like that. So
- 11:02this way we're going to get a really
- 11:04nice terrain in the end. So that's going
- 11:07to be quite nice. And I think that's
- 11:09going to look quite nice. Just going to
- 11:12lower this end as well. Like so. And
- 11:16yeah, I think that's just going to
- 11:19finish it off over here as well. And
- 11:21this bit is not going to be visible. So
- 11:23that's going to be quite all right. So
- 11:24again, going to look at it from before
- 11:27and after. You can see the type of edge,
- 11:29the slight kind of a jitter that we have
- 11:31from the hand painted sculpting mode.
- 11:34That's going to give us much nicer
- 11:36results. And I think that's going to be
- 11:38quite all right. We might actually think
- 11:40this part of the water body might be a
- 11:43little bit too little. So we might want
- 11:45to Yeah, let's go ahead and increase it
- 11:47a little bit. Just going to use a
- 11:48flatten tool and oh just going to lower
- 11:50the brush size first and kind of expand
- 11:54this just a little bit using a flatten
- 11:57mode. And I think that's going to be
- 11:59much nicer. So now we can actually go
- 12:03into the select mode and see how this
- 12:04looks like and even delete those basic
- 12:07cubes that we had previously and see how
- 12:10this looks. And of course this is
- 12:11floating because we need to fix that up.
- 12:12So let's go into the landscape sculpt
- 12:14mode flatten and with a small brush like
- 12:18so. And can change the fallout fall off
- 12:21to be 0.1 or 2. And we're just going to
- 12:24bring this back up like so. So it'll be
- 12:27touching the edge of this
- 12:31bridge. And I think it's going to be
- 12:34quite nice. Let's just go ahead and fix
- 12:35it up just a little bit. And before
- 12:38moving on, I figured that we might as
- 12:40well add a little bit of an extra noise
- 12:41in order to get a more interesting shape
- 12:44to the terrain. So, what we're going to
- 12:45do is actually we're going to go into
- 12:47the erosion mode, which is this one over
- 12:49here. And if you were to select it, we
- 12:51get a bunch of options to choose from.
- 12:53And what this will basically do is it'll
- 12:55erode all the edges within the cliffs,
- 12:58and it'll just give you a more of a
- 13:00noisy kind of a landscape. It'll give
- 13:02you a more interesting shape to it. So
- 13:04the way we do it is by simply just
- 13:06applying the brush right away. You can
- 13:08see that it just gives you a much
- 13:09interesting uh and nicer shape. If you
- 13:11do it on a flat surface, it'll also add
- 13:14some bit of a variation towards our
- 13:16terrain as well. So if we were to uh get
- 13:19ourselves a bit of a larger brush size
- 13:21within the brush settings. And if we
- 13:23were to increase this uh let's say to
- 13:26something like 2,000. And if we were to
- 13:29just apply it throughout our terrain,
- 13:31we're going to get some nice results
- 13:32throughout our section. So right now,
- 13:35just by using the default settings and
- 13:37having the strength and threshold set as
- 13:39the default value, we're able to get
- 13:41some nice results. So I'm just actually
- 13:42going to go into the tool strength and
- 13:44just reset it to its default property
- 13:46value just to get a 0.3. And just by
- 13:49holding it, we'll get a much softer of a
- 13:52result when we're applying the servo
- 13:54brush. And we can see that we actually
- 13:56have a noise mode by default. I'd
- 13:58usually like to keep it as both. And
- 14:01what this will do is basically it'll add
- 14:03and as well as lower down the terrain
- 14:06within using the settings. So for
- 14:08example, when we're applying it right
- 14:09now, we're not only going to be lowering
- 14:11everything, we're also going to be
- 14:13raising everything up. And usually what
- 14:15I like to do is I like to make use out
- 14:18of this whenever we have a terrain
- 14:20that's not near a water area. So, for
- 14:23example, all the terrain over here on
- 14:25the side, we're going to be using that.
- 14:27So, I'm just going to increase the brush
- 14:29by quite a large amount. Keep the brush
- 14:31fall off at 0.2. And we're actually
- 14:33going to keep the noise scale at 60.
- 14:35This is what controls how our brush
- 14:38breaks down the entire terrain. So, by,
- 14:41for example, getting ourselves noise
- 14:43scale up to 120, we'd be able to have a
- 14:47much larger results. And by lowering
- 14:50that to let's say at something like 20,
- 14:52we'd be able to get much much thinner
- 14:55kind of a noise. And actually using
- 14:58something of a value between 40 and 80,
- 15:00I find it to be the best. So for
- 15:01example, something like 50, something in
- 15:03between. Using this sort of a value will
- 15:06give you somewhat of a nice result. And
- 15:08again, I'm just going to apply that to
- 15:10the rest of the terrain. Just real
- 15:11quick, just kind of brushing through
- 15:14with my brush. Just like that. Again,
- 15:16I'm avoiding this area for where the
- 15:18water is going to be and next to the
- 15:20house. And just making sure I'm going
- 15:23with this all the way around our
- 15:25terrain. Just like that. And just by
- 15:28sculpting it out using this kind of a
- 15:30brush, we're getting some really, really
- 15:32interesting shapes and really nice
- 15:34results. And I think I overdid it in
- 15:36this area. So, I'm going to click Ctrl
- 15:37and Z and undo my previous step. And
- 15:41actually, I'm I'm going to keep this
- 15:43area as is. Just going to make sure not
- 15:45to touch this area next to the water.
- 15:47And I think that's going to give us some
- 15:49really nice results. So, if we're even
- 15:50looking it at it from this area, it's
- 15:52going to look quite nice. But next to
- 15:55the water section, what I like to do is
- 15:57I want to make sure that the noise mode
- 15:59is set from both and set it to race.
- 16:02This way, we're we're actually adding a
- 16:04water plane into this area. It's not
- 16:06going to be clipping through to the
- 16:07sides of this terrain because usually
- 16:10when we're adding a water plane, we're
- 16:12not going to get identically to the
- 16:14edges of this water bed and instead
- 16:17we're going to slightly extend the plane
- 16:19for the water and that'll just make sure
- 16:22that all the channel all the rivered is
- 16:25covered in water. But again, we are
- 16:27going to use noise mode set as rays. And
- 16:29this way when we're using it, it's going
- 16:31to kind of raise up the terrain in these
- 16:34areas. And this is actually exactly what
- 16:36we want because this way we're able to
- 16:38get some nice results out of our water
- 16:41bed. And it'll just make sure that the
- 16:44areas that are next to the water aren't
- 16:46going to be lowered down enough for us
- 16:49to see the water. I'm going to leave the
- 16:52area for where the housing is as just
- 16:56going to slightly tap and apply uh this
- 16:59sort of a noise. And just like that,
- 17:02we're able to get some really nice
- 17:03values for our base of the terrain. Of
- 17:06course, we're not quite done with the
- 17:07terrain just yet. We'll need to apply a
- 17:09bunch of other items like um rocks, for
- 17:13example, or foliage in order to break
- 17:15apart this sort of a terrain. And also,
- 17:17we'll need to make sure we texture that,
- 17:18but we're going to do that in the
- 17:20future. Before doing that though, I
- 17:22reckon we can start on building up our
- 17:24area for where the house is and the
- 17:27bridge as well. and we're going to start
- 17:29off uh doing that in the next lesson.
- 17:31So, thank you so much for watching and
- 17:32I'll see you in a bit.
