6 Using Landscape Tool — Transcript

- 0:15and welcome back everyone to Unreal
- 0:16Engine 5 beginner's guide to building an
- 0:18environment. In the last lesson, we left
- 0:21it off by creating a very basic gray
- 0:23box. And this time we're going to
- 0:25continue on working on this project and
- 0:27set up a landscape for our scene. So
- 0:30let's go ahead and get started. Within
- 0:32the upper left corner, we're going to go
- 0:34from the select mode and we're going to
- 0:37change it to the landscape. So let's go
- 0:39ahead and click on that. And then right
- 0:41away, we're going to get ourselves a
- 0:42different tab to work with. I'm actually
- 0:44going to go ahead and close down the
- 0:47content browser just so I could see the
- 0:48entire tab like so. And now we get
- 0:51ourselves a green type of an
- 0:53environment, a type of grid that just
- 0:56visualizes the type of landscape it's
- 0:57going to create. So right now all of
- 1:01this is showing us the type of landscape
- 1:04that we're going to create based on the
- 1:06type of properties that we're setting up
- 1:08within these settings. It's going to
- 1:10give us 100 by 100 scale with 63x 60
- 1:15quads and the number of components is
- 1:18going to be an 8x 8. So you see these
- 1:21large squares that are highlighted with
- 1:23the smaller squares inside. So the the
- 1:24large squares are going to be 8 by 8.
- 1:27Anyways, we're just going to keep all of
- 1:29the settings as in and as is. And we can
- 1:31actually delete the squares later on or
- 1:34even add them up in the future. But for
- 1:36now, all we're going to do is we're just
- 1:38going to click create. And we're going
- 1:41to get ourselves a sort of a landscape
- 1:44base for us to work with. And I think
- 1:46that's a nice starting point. We can now
- 1:49go back to the selection for example and
- 1:51change the way it is placed within our
- 1:54world. I'm actually going to select it
- 1:56like so. Click F and then we're going to
- 1:58scale out like so. And I'm just going to
- 2:01rotate it by holding Alt and the left
- 2:03mouse button and just going to bring it
- 2:05up just a little bit like so.
- 2:10So, it's going to be slightly covering
- 2:13up our platform. So, I'm now going to
- 2:16select my asset in the middle. Click F
- 2:18and kind of reposition my camera to be
- 2:20back within where we started placing
- 2:23this gray box for the housing. And
- 2:26actually even we can just select the
- 2:28landscape itself. And within a lock
- 2:31transformation, we can uh click and hold
- 2:34on the Z value on the blue one over here
- 2:36and then drag it up a little bit just so
- 2:38we could have it right where our
- 2:42platform is being positioned. This way
- 2:44when we're going to be building our
- 2:45house, it's going to position be
- 2:47positioned right on the very top of it.
- 2:49And now we're actually going to kind of
- 2:52start molding and modeling the entire
- 2:54section for this area. And the way we're
- 2:57going to do it is actually we need to go
- 2:59back to the landscape tab. So let's go
- 3:01on the upper left corner and select
- 3:03landscape.
- 3:05And it'll just open up uh the tab type
- 3:07of tab that we had previously which once
- 3:09we create the landscape we get. And we
- 3:12have three options. We have manage,
- 3:14sculpt, and paint. And we'll start off
- 3:17with the manage tab. Actually, let's go
- 3:19into it. And we have a couple of
- 3:20choices. The main ones that we need to
- 3:23think of are the add and delete. So, if
- 3:26I were to, for example, want to delete
- 3:28couple of settings, couple of locations.
- 3:30We can go ahead and select this one over
- 3:32here, the delete one. And then, if you
- 3:36were to click on the corner, for
- 3:37example, over here, we can delete part
- 3:40of the section. If we want to bring it
- 3:42back up, we can select add and add
- 3:45another section like that. And we can
- 3:47even add up more of the parts to this
- 3:49terrain. But for now though, because our
- 3:52main camera is going to position be
- 3:54positioned towards this area over here,
- 3:56I'm thinking that we can delete some of
- 3:58those uh parts from over this area over
- 4:00here. And then that way we'll just be
- 4:02saving up on the performance and just
- 4:04not use anything unnecessary for
- 4:06terrain. So just going to delete this
- 4:08bit over here. maybe even another one
- 4:12actually. Actually, we're going to leave
- 4:13it as is and we're just going to sculpt
- 4:17it out afterwards. So, right now, once
- 4:19we're done with that, going out of the
- 4:21manage mode, we're actually going to go
- 4:24onto the sculpt mode over here. We're
- 4:26going to select it. And what this will
- 4:28allow us to do is it allow us to shape
- 4:30the terrain. So, using the basic sculpt
- 4:32tool selected, we have a couple of
- 4:34options with it. and we'll just leave it
- 4:37as the basic brush type default with a
- 4:39basic fall-off. And right away, we're
- 4:42just going to get right into the
- 4:44modeling part, the sculpting part for
- 4:46the terrain. So, with the brush size set
- 4:50as uh let's say, yeah, let's go ahead
- 4:52and keep it as 2,00. If you wanted to
- 4:54make it larger, we can click and hold
- 4:56and then drag it to the right and make
- 4:57it larger. Or alternatively, we can
- 5:00click and hold our left mouse button and
- 5:01drag it downwards to make our brush
- 5:04smaller. And this way, as you can see,
- 5:06if we vis if you hover over our
- 5:08viewport, we can see the type of size
- 5:10we're going to get. We're going to keep
- 5:11it as a default 2,00ish. We don't have
- 5:14to be accurate. We can be accurate by
- 5:16clicking on it and just typing in the
- 5:18value ourselves, but we don't have to.
- 5:21Then the other one that we have is the
- 5:23brush falloff. And we're going to get
- 5:26that in a bit though. So, first of all,
- 5:28let's just go ahead and make use out of
- 5:30the terrain uh forming sculpt brush. So,
- 5:34if we were to click and hold, we're just
- 5:36going to raise our entire terrain
- 5:38upwards. And in general, if we were to
- 5:41want to lower this down, if we hold
- 5:44shift and left mouse button, we can just
- 5:47lower this entire terrain down. And
- 5:50actually, looking back now, I should
- 5:53probably delete the
- 5:56part that we had previously, the
- 5:57platform. So, I'm just going to delete
- 5:59the larger one. We're going to keep uh
- 6:01the smaller ones for now, the ones that
- 6:03we created previously. Just going to go
- 6:05back into the landscape like so. And
- 6:07now, actually, we're just going to be
- 6:09sculpting out a nice kind of area for
- 6:12where our water is going to be. So, the
- 6:14height is going to be kept as more or
- 6:16less the same for where our platform
- 6:18was. So, I'm just going to lower the
- 6:20value of the terrain so I could see
- 6:22barely where the terrain is positioned.
- 6:26And then the next part that I'm going to
- 6:28use is going to be something called
- 6:30platter. This is my favorite brush to
- 6:33use for having more control because in
- 6:35default by default the sculpt tool will
- 6:38just give you a lot of noise when you
- 6:39try to kind of um have more control over
- 6:42your area and that just not going to
- 6:44give you the type of great result. So by
- 6:46using a flatten tool, it'll basically
- 6:48pick the type of a height from the
- 6:51middle section of your brush. And
- 6:53that'll just basically apply that type
- 6:55of height for the rest of the size of
- 6:58this brush. So for example, if I were to
- 7:00hover over this kind of slightly
- 7:02downwards elev elevation of this terrain
- 7:06and click and hold, you can see that it
- 7:08flattens everything to the size of a
- 7:10height that I had my middle section of
- 7:12the brush selected. And that just
- 7:14creates some nice results. Alternatively
- 7:16though, if I were to hover over the high
- 7:18area and then click and hold, it'll just
- 7:20kind of bring the entire terrain back
- 7:22onto this entire kind of uh uh height.
- 7:25And that just helps us to have more
- 7:27control of how we want to have our
- 7:29positioned brush to be. And also, if you
- 7:33want to make sure that uh we don't cut
- 7:35off too much of this hill, we're going
- 7:37to make use out of the brush falloff,
- 7:40which if we were to lower this down to
- 7:42zero, it'll give us the harder kind of
- 7:44edges. But of course, we don't want to
- 7:46be too hard with the edges because it'll
- 7:48give us these sort of results, the
- 7:49artifacts. So, we never want to go uh
- 7:52lower than the value of let's say 2 or
- 7:540.1. We never want to go basically to a
- 7:56zero. And if we were to set this to 02,
- 8:00we're going to get uh somewhat of hard
- 8:02harder values like we did previously,
- 8:05but it's not going to cut off uh it's
- 8:08not going to give us the type of
- 8:09artifacts that we had before. So bear
- 8:11that in mind. Alternatively, if we were
- 8:13to set this all the way to a value of
- 8:16one and try to use the same kind of
- 8:18brush, you'll notice that we're actually
- 8:19going to start getting kind of a
- 8:22feathered off effect. And it'll
- 8:24basically smoon off the type of an edge
- 8:27for the terrain. But anyway, we want to
- 8:29make use out of this kind of a base that
- 8:32we had previously and set it up in the
- 8:34right kind of a height for our lake. So,
- 8:37what we're going to do is we're going to
- 8:39set up our brush just to be a little bit
- 8:40smaller, like so. And we're going to get
- 8:42ourselves a brush actually back to 0.5.
- 8:45I think the default one was quite fine.
- 8:47Then we're going to position the height
- 8:49of this brush to be more or less the
- 8:51same as we had previously. Like so. Uh
- 8:53to the terrain. And we're just going to
- 8:56basically get it to be the same kind of
- 8:59a height as we had this terrain. It
- 9:01doesn't have to be perfect. As you can
- 9:03see, my section for the terrain is a
- 9:06little bit lower than the platform
- 9:07itself, but that is quite fine. And then
- 9:10we're just going to hold our left mouse
- 9:12button. And just like that, we're able
- 9:14to shape out our entire terrain. And
- 9:17what we want is basically we want to set
- 9:20it up in a way that we have sort of a
- 9:23body lake over here. And we'll want to
- 9:27set up uh somewhat of a stream, a river
- 9:30coming from this area and going into
- 9:32this area over here. And then we'll want
- 9:34to have an overall kind of rundown for
- 9:37the water going off into the distance.
- 9:39So the way we're going to do it is just
- 9:41we're going to set up a nice location
- 9:43for the water like so. We're going to
- 9:46have actually more of an area over here.
- 9:50Just make sure we're not having it
- 9:52perfectly shaped. Of course, we wanted
- 9:54to have it looking more organic and
- 9:57whatnot. And I think that's going to
- 9:59look quite nice. We can even hit play
- 10:01and see how it's going to look like. And
- 10:03I think that's quite a nice depth for
- 10:05the water itself. I think that's going
- 10:07to look quite all right. So, we're going
- 10:09to keep it as is. So, now we just want
- 10:12to make sure we have sort of a let down
- 10:14over here for the water to go off. And
- 10:18we want to just have it somewhat of a
- 10:20straight stream going all the way to the
- 10:23back like so. So, by holding the flatten
- 10:26tool, making sure I'm always centering
- 10:28on the lowest area of the terrain, and
- 10:32then holding my left mouse button, and
- 10:35just shaping out this kind of a canal
- 10:38for the river. So, we're going to have
- 10:40it go all the way to the back like so.
- 10:42Now, for this part, we can shape it in a
- 10:45way that would have a somewhat
- 10:49of
- 10:50a terrain hanging out from this end over
- 10:52here. And we can even use this terrain
- 10:56that's higher up and kind of build this
- 10:57terrain back up like so. So that's going
- 10:59to look quite nice. I think that's going
- 11:02to look quite nice as a shape. Maybe we
- 11:04want to be a little bit wider over here.
- 11:07Think that's going quite nice. We might
- 11:09want to add some rocks over in this area
- 11:11as well for the water. It all depends
- 11:13how the water is going to be uh behaving
- 11:16within this terrain. And so far it looks
- 11:19quite nice. We now want to set up some
- 11:21hills. That's actually quite going to be
- 11:23quite easy to do. We're going to start
- 11:24off by getting a nice sculpt brush and
- 11:26kind of increasing this overall area.
- 11:29And we'll want to have one hill like
- 11:31this,
- 11:33a bit higher than this elevation over
- 11:35here. And then we'll actually want to
- 11:37have another hill that's even higher
- 11:39than the previous one, like so. So, now
- 11:41that we have two elevations to work
- 11:43with, we're actually going to go back to
- 11:44the flattened brush and we're going to
- 11:46be working with these types of
- 11:48elevations. So, we're going to be
- 11:49setting them up like so. But actually,
- 11:53we're running out of time, and I think
- 11:54we'll need to work on it a little bit
- 11:57more than before we actually continue on
- 11:59with designing our little house by the
- 12:01water. And I think for now, we're going
- 12:04to end it as is. And in the next lesson,
- 12:06we're going to continue on working with
- 12:08the larger scales for the terrain in
- 12:11order to shape this environment. So,
- 12:13thank you so much for watching, and I'll
- 12:15see you in a bit.
