6 Outdated Style Rules You MUST UNLEARN in 2026 — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00I used to think that following all the
- 0:02style rules was the way to looking good.
- 0:04What flatters me, what suits my body
- 0:06shape, what's trending right now. But
- 0:09the most genuinely stylish people I know
- 0:12don't follow any of it. So, in this
- 0:14video, I want to challenge some of the
- 0:17biggest personal style rules and show
- 0:20you what happens [clears throat] when
- 0:21you stop dressing to get it right and
- 0:24start dressing for yourself. And I want
- 0:26to start with one that has shaped how
- 0:29most of us get dressed without us even
- 0:32realizing it. And it's the idea that
- 0:34everything we wear has to be flattering.
- 0:37And I'll admit, I have been part of this
- 0:39conversation, too. I've made videos on
- 0:42petite style mistakes or how to look
- 0:44taller because those tips can be
- 0:47helpful. But lately, I've been asking
- 0:49myself, why is that the only goal when
- 0:52we're putting together an outfit? From a
- 0:54really young age, we are taught to dress
- 0:56in a way that makes us look slimmer or
- 0:59taller or more proportional. And
- 1:01somewhere along the way, the word
- 1:03flattering stopped meaning something
- 1:06that I really like the look of on my
- 1:09body and started meaning something that
- 1:12has to fit our social norms. Being 5
- 1:15foot 2, I will also admit that, you
- 1:18know, for a long time, I avoided really
- 1:21chunky knitwear or chunky shoes or even
- 1:24like mid-rise jeans because I was afraid
- 1:27they would make me look shorter. But let
- 1:29me tell you something, some of my
- 1:32favorite items in my wardrobe right now
- 1:35are exactly those things. I love my big
- 1:39chunky oversized jumper from Cars. It's
- 1:42like one of my favorite things to wear.
- 1:44And recently, I have been gravitating
- 1:46towards my Levis's 50190s,
- 1:50which are like a slightly baggier
- 1:52mid-rise denim. And if you would have
- 1:54told me, you know, a few years ago that
- 1:56these are the items I want to wear the
- 1:58most, I honestly wouldn't have believed
- 2:00you. I never ever would have touched
- 2:03anything lower than a high-rise. I
- 2:06always believed that high-rise trousers
- 2:09or jeans, like as high-rise as possible
- 2:12as I could wear, were the only things
- 2:14that I could wear. I would literally
- 2:16only wear like one silhouette of jeans.
- 2:19And that's not to say I don't wear them
- 2:22now, but opening up my eyes and
- 2:25branching out into other things that
- 2:27make me feel good has made my style feel
- 2:31more personal. Because the thing is the
- 2:33word flattering has never been a neutral
- 2:37word. It's just another way of saying
- 2:39you look closer to our current beauty
- 2:42standards. And I think once I realized
- 2:44that it was so freeing because it means
- 2:47that I get to redefine what flattering
- 2:51means to me. So now when I ask myself if
- 2:54something is flattering, what I really
- 2:56mean is, do I feel comfortable in this?
- 2:59Does this make me feel confident? Do I
- 3:01feel like myself in this? Because I
- 3:03think that is what people really notice
- 3:05is how you feel in your clothes, not
- 3:08whether a pair of jeans makes you look 2
- 3:10in taller. You need to dress up to be
- 3:13stylish. I used to think that to be
- 3:15stylish, you always had to be done. Full
- 3:18makeup, full hair, lashes, nails,
- 3:21everything. This was definitely a
- 3:23mindset that I had when I was younger
- 3:27that, you know, you always had to wear a
- 3:30heel or wear a statement piece and just
- 3:33be picture perfect to look stylish. But
- 3:37as I get older, I'm now realizing that
- 3:40that version of style is exhausting.
- 3:43It's not realistic. It's not real life.
- 3:45And honestly, it just took away from the
- 3:48creativity and the fun of getting ready
- 3:51and getting dressed, especially when I'm
- 3:53wearing, you know, my casual clothes,
- 3:56which is pretty much what I wear most of
- 3:58the time. I've realized that in the
- 4:00phase of life that I'm currently in,
- 4:02simplicity always wins. The people whose
- 4:05style I admire the most aren't the ones
- 4:07that are always really dressed up. They
- 4:10just look put together. It's about the
- 4:12fit of the items, the fabric, and being
- 4:16really intentional with the choices that
- 4:18you make, not necessarily how fancy
- 4:21something looks. And that idea of
- 4:23simplicity has trickled down into the
- 4:26way I get ready to, because you don't
- 4:28need a full glam routine to feel put
- 4:30together. Sometimes it's just about
- 4:32making the small things easier. It used
- 4:34to take me over an hour to get myself
- 4:37ready to film my videos, but now, thanks
- 4:40to the Dreamy Air Style Pro, it takes me
- 4:43about 20 minutes, and my whole hair
- 4:46routine is so much easier. It's a 7in-1
- 4:48styler that dries, smooths, and curls
- 4:51all in one tool. It comes with seven
- 4:53attachments that just snap on
- 4:54magnetically, so I can switch from a
- 4:56smooth blowout to soft waves or extra
- 4:59volume in seconds. I've always had
- 5:01bleached and dry ends, and using my hot
- 5:05tools was not helping at all. But this
- 5:08air styler makes my hair feel softer and
- 5:11not fried. The Jet Airflow technology
- 5:13uses a high-speed motor that dries and
- 5:15styles really quickly, and it also has a
- 5:18smart heat control that constantly
- 5:20adjusts the temperature to protect your
- 5:21hair. It takes me less than 5 minutes to
- 5:23dry my hair. Now, on days when I just
- 5:25need my hair to be neat, all I do is
- 5:28rough dry and then use the smoothing
- 5:30brush to get rid of any tangles. This
- 5:32leaves my hair feeling so smooth and
- 5:34sleek. But if you've been watching me
- 5:36for a while, you know that I love to do
- 5:38a soft, bouncy curl, and so this is
- 5:41exactly how I did it. After drying my
- 5:43hair to about 80%, I switched to the
- 5:45auto wrap barrels, which literally grab
- 5:48and wrap the hair on their own. It's so
- 5:50so easy. All you need to do is hold for
- 5:5210 seconds on the heat setting and then
- 5:54follow it with the cool setting to set
- 5:56the curl. The result is smooth, bouncy
- 5:58hair that lasts me for days. And the
- 6:00best part is it only takes about 10 to
- 6:0315 minutes. You'd never believe that my
- 6:04hair is naturally quite limp and flat.
- 6:07It's also super lightweight and plus it
- 6:09has this soft pebbled leather handle
- 6:11that feels very premium and wellmade.
- 6:13What I've learned is you don't have to
- 6:15go overboard to look put together. When
- 6:17you focus on quality and simplifying the
- 6:19process, effortless always wins. Over
- 6:22the years, I have tried every expensive
- 6:25hair tool out there. I've spent a lot of
- 6:27money on hair tools. And I can honestly
- 6:29say the Dreamy Air Style Pro works just
- 6:31as well, if not better, and is way more
- 6:34affordable. And what's even better is
- 6:36that it's currently 60% off for Black
- 6:38Friday, which is the lowest price of the
- 6:40year. I'll leave all the links and
- 6:42information in the description box
- 6:44below. Thank you so much to Dreamy for
- 6:46sponsoring this portion of the video.
- 6:48You need to complete your wardrobe. I
- 6:50remember sitting down one day and making
- 6:53a list of things my wardrobe was
- 6:56missing. It was supposed to help me stop
- 6:58impulse shopping, which, you know, it
- 7:01kind of did, but the list just kept
- 7:04getting longer. Every time I bought one
- 7:06thing, I would think of other things
- 7:08that I need to complete my wardrobe. And
- 7:10that's when it hit me. There's no finish
- 7:13line. You never really reach a point
- 7:15where your wardrobe feels done because
- 7:18your life and your taste keep moving.
- 7:21For the longest time, I was chasing the
- 7:23idea of a finished wardrobe. I felt like
- 7:26if I just found that one perfect shirt,
- 7:30the perfect pair of jeans, the perfect
- 7:32pair of loafers, then I would finally be
- 7:36done, whatever that means. But what I've
- 7:38realized is that wardrobes don't work
- 7:40like that. A wardrobe isn't a puzzle to
- 7:43be completed. Your style is a living
- 7:46changing thing. It grows and shifts as
- 7:49your lifestyle, your body, and your
- 7:51taste also evolve. I do also think that
- 7:55social media has had a part to play in
- 7:58this as well. It's made us feel like
- 7:59there is an end goal. Like if you just
- 8:02buy the right 15 pieces, then you're
- 8:05done and you'll never have to think
- 8:07about clothes again. And I'm sure that
- 8:09for some people that might work. I'm not
- 8:12saying that that doesn't work for
- 8:14everyone. I think of course for some
- 8:16people that makes complete sense, but I
- 8:18think that for most of us who love
- 8:21clothes and who enjoy shopping and
- 8:23personal style, that mindset keeps you
- 8:27in the loop of like constantly
- 8:30wanting new things or upgrading things
- 8:32or looking for a better version of
- 8:34something you already have instead of
- 8:37just enjoying what you do have. So
- 8:40instead of trying to complete my
- 8:41wardrobe, I now am just trying to
- 8:45understand myself better. I'm trying to
- 8:47understand and take note of what I reach
- 8:50for the most, what I wear the most, what
- 8:53makes me the most comfortable, and on
- 8:55the other hand, what no longer feels
- 8:57right for me, what doesn't serve me
- 9:00anymore, and asking myself where the
- 9:02real gaps are. And I think that's how we
- 9:05can build something that's more
- 9:08sustainable and personal. Not by
- 9:11constantly buying and collecting more,
- 9:14but by refining and curating and styling
- 9:17what we already have. A wardrobe doesn't
- 9:20need to be completed. It just needs to
- 9:23make sense for you right now in whatever
- 9:27phase of your life that you're in. Your
- 9:29wardrobe has to fit one aesthetic. For
- 9:32the longest time, I was really fixated
- 9:34on my style words and making sure that
- 9:39everything in my wardrobe always matched
- 9:43that aesthetic. Whether it was like
- 9:45minimal or classic or feminine or
- 9:48whatever the word might be, I would
- 9:50always try and make sure that the items
- 9:53I bought were one of those words. But I
- 9:56think I got a bit too bogged down with
- 9:59the weight of those words. And whenever
- 10:02I would like something that was maybe
- 10:04like outside of those words, I would
- 10:07talk myself out of buying it because I
- 10:11was afraid that it wouldn't match the
- 10:13rest of my wardrobe or what I thought my
- 10:15style aesthetic was supposed to be. But
- 10:18the truth is, no one really dresses in
- 10:20one single aesthetic every day. We're
- 10:23not one-dimensional people. We have
- 10:26different interests and moods and tastes
- 10:28and even we have to adhere to the
- 10:31weather. And so of course naturally our
- 10:34style is going to reflect that as well.
- 10:36Some days I want to look really clean
- 10:38and minimal. Some days I want to look
- 10:42more sporty and some days I just want to
- 10:45wear something really oversized and
- 10:47comfortable. And that doesn't mean I
- 10:48don't know my own style. It just means
- 10:51that I'm dressing for all the different
- 10:53sides of who I am. I think the key is
- 10:56finding a through line. It's the details
- 10:59that tie all of your looks together. I
- 11:02think for me that's definitely color and
- 11:04it's definitely still keeping all my
- 11:08looks quite simple. I don't like
- 11:09anything too fussy. I don't like too
- 11:12much going on. So even if I'm wearing
- 11:14something really tailored one day or
- 11:16something really casual and sporty the
- 11:18next day, they will still have that same
- 11:21through line. When you stop trying to
- 11:23fit your wardrobe into a single
- 11:25aesthetic, that's when your outfits can
- 11:28become so much more versatile and you'll
- 11:30start building outfits on how you feel
- 11:34and maybe less so in how you want to be
- 11:38defined by this aesthetic. And I think
- 11:41that to me is what personal style is.
- 11:45It's when you are consistent, not in the
- 11:48aesthetic, but in the details that hold
- 11:53all your different outfits together for
- 11:56your different moods. I think that's
- 11:58what makes it feel authentic to you. You
- 12:02have to follow trends to stay relevant.
- 12:04There's also this constant pressure to
- 12:06keep up with the latest trends, the
- 12:09latest this, the latest that. But trends
- 12:11are moving faster than ever. By the time
- 12:14you've added something to your cart,
- 12:16there's already a new must-h have item
- 12:18on the horizon. And trying to keep up
- 12:21with that pace is honestly exhausting,
- 12:24both mentally and financially. And the
- 12:26irony is that following every trend
- 12:29actually makes your style less personal.
- 12:32You're diluting all of the parts of your
- 12:35style that make it personal. I think the
- 12:37trick is to let trends inspire you, but
- 12:41also filter them through your own taste
- 12:44and your own lifestyle. If it fits
- 12:46naturally into your wardrobe, then
- 12:48amazing. Go for it. But if you're buying
- 12:51something because you have just seen it
- 12:53everywhere, then I think you have to
- 12:55reassess why you're getting it or why
- 12:57you want it. Personal style doesn't come
- 12:59from constantly trying new things. I
- 13:03think that there is a place for that in
- 13:06style because you have to give yourself
- 13:08space to experiment. But if you're
- 13:10experimenting every single trend without
- 13:13really thinking about why you want that
- 13:15trend, that's when you have a problem.
- 13:19Style is about knowing who you are and
- 13:22knowing what works for you and equally
- 13:24what doesn't work for you. And it's
- 13:25about dressing in a way that feels true
- 13:28to that no matter what is trending at
- 13:31the moment. Expensive equals better
- 13:34quality. I think that maybe 10 or 15
- 13:38years ago, we could have a very safe
- 13:40assumption that if something was more
- 13:42expensive, it is generally better
- 13:45quality. Nowadays, I really do not think
- 13:48that is the case at all. The more time
- 13:50I've spent learning about fabric and
- 13:53construction, the more I've realized
- 13:55that price and quality aren't the same
- 13:58thing. A high price doesn't always mean
- 14:01better craftsmanship. Sometimes you're
- 14:04paying for the logo or a marketing
- 14:07budget or the brand's image. I've bought
- 14:11expensive things that felt absolutely
- 14:14beautiful at first, but then after a few
- 14:18wears, a few washes, it started to look
- 14:20a bit tired, a bit flat, and a bit dull.
- 14:23At the same time, I've also shopped from
- 14:26smaller brands or mid-range brands that
- 14:29have made excellent pieces that have
- 14:32lasted me for years. The real difference
- 14:34comes down to the fabric, the
- 14:36construction, and how well it fits into
- 14:40your wardrobe and your lifestyle. That's
- 14:42what makes something an investment, not
- 14:44a name on the tag or the price that you
- 14:47paid. So now before I buy anything
- 14:49expensive, I always check the
- 14:52construction. I check the materials that
- 14:55it's made of. And I ask myself, does
- 14:59this work with what I already own? I no
- 15:01longer think price equals quality. Now I
- 15:04think quality equals longevity. And
- 15:08that's how I kind of see all the pieces
- 15:11that I bring into my wardrobe. And
- 15:13that's why I absolutely love researching
- 15:16and breaking down what makes a piece
- 15:19well-made from the fabric to the
- 15:21construction because understanding
- 15:24quality completely changes the way that
- 15:26you shop. So, if you haven't seen my
- 15:29highquality wardrobe series yet, I will
- 15:32link it on screen so that you can watch
- 15:35that next. Thank you so much for
- 15:36watching this video and I will see you
- 15:38in the next one. Bye.
