50 Character Builder Questions for your Tabletop Character — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Got kind of a spooky vibe going on today
- 0:03I was just thinking about Halloween
- 0:05It's coming
- 0:10Hey friends, Ginny Di here
- 0:11And a few months ago in a video where I was talking about DM'ing
- 0:14I talked about how I ask my players character builder questions before each session
- 0:18With the group that I DM, every session I give them a question before we start the session that's like a character builder question
- 0:24The goal of these questions is to just get everybody thinking in character and to give them an opportunity to
- 0:29explore and develop their characters in different ways than what they've been able to do so far at the table during role-play
- 0:36The goal isn't for these questions to be big character defining questions
- 0:39Like what's your biggest fear, or what's your goal in life?
- 0:42Those are the bones
- 0:44These questions are for building up the flesh
- 0:46The details that take a character from an outline to something closer to a living breathing person
- 0:51When I talked about this, I got a ton of comments asking me to share a list of questions
- 0:56So full disclosure, the main reason that it took me this long to actually do it
- 0:59Is that I have a much more complicated cooler plan for presenting these kinds of questions on video
- 1:04But, I figured why not do both, toss out some questions now to get you started, and then dig a little deeper in future videos
- 1:11Speaking of tabletop gaming, this video is sponsored by Protect the Caravan, who just launched a Kickstarter for these ridiculously cute dice potions
- 1:19Basically, they're just pretty dice
- 1:21Just pretty dice?
- 1:22Dismissive, when we all know that dice are happiness polyhedrals
- 1:25Packaged in little potion bottles
- 1:27They're even labeled with which potion they are, like water breathing which I of course had to get because...
- 1:33Obviously
- 1:34There are 16 different potion colors and honestly, they are all just straight up beautiful
- 1:39You can store or display them in their little bottles, and the packaging also just makes them a super cute gift... or a DM bribe
- 1:46-Okay, and I get advantage on that saving throw. Right?
- 1:49-What?
- 1:50No, why would you get advantage?
- 1:51-I'm, sorry. I was unclear, I get advantage on that saving throw, right?
- 1:58-Oh, yes advantage
- 2:01Right
- 2:02*Wink*
- 2:03A single potion is twelve dollars pretty standard for acrylic dice
- 2:06But there are discounts when you pledge for more potions
- 2:09I will link to the Kickstarter in the description. It ends on September 11th, so don't wait to make your pledge
- 2:14Today I have for you 50 questions to help develop your tabletop character in ways that you might not have thought of yet
- 2:20These are in second person. So you should answer them from the perspective of your character
- 2:25I'm, not gonna leave awkward Dora the Explorer style space for you to answer
- 2:29So I would suggest pausing the video after each question so you have time to answer
- 2:33Do you see Swiper?
- 2:35[Awkward pause]
- 2:36Is he in range for fireball?
- 2:38[Awkward pause]
- 2:39¡Muy bien!
- 2:40Of course, you don't have to answer all of them
- 2:41But I think it's a good exercise to try and round out your character traits
- 2:45Think of this as an interview with your tabletop character
- 2:49Are you a morning person or more of a night owl?
- 2:52What's the first thing you notice about a person when you meet them?
- 2:55You see a huge spider in your room. What do you do?

- 3:33Do you believe in destiny?
- 3:35Are you a good cook?
- 3:36What do you think happens after you die?
- 3:38Did you have to grow up fast?
- 3:40Who do you look up to?
- 3:42When you go to a tavern, what do you order?

- 4:31Are you more of a hoarder or a minimalist?
- 4:34Are you superstitious?
- 4:35Are you the kind of person who remembers people's birthdays and pets names and stuff?
- 4:40What do you do to feel better when you're sad?
- 4:42Is it hard for you to trust someone?
- 4:44Are you susceptible to peer pressure?
- 4:47If you decided to stop adventuring and settle down what kind of job would you take?
- 4:51As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
- 4:54And that's 50!
- 4:55I will link a document with a list of the questions in the description in case you would prefer them in written form
- 5:00That whole thing just sounded like you're hearing 50% of a first date
- 5:04If you found this helpful, please let me know
- 5:06I was thinking it might be fun to make another version of the same kind of list
- 5:09But with more out of character questions, like: If your tabletop character went to high school, what kind of clique would they be in? Stuff like that
- 5:16Let me know what you think in the comments and stay tuned because I have another tabletop themed video coming at you next week
- 5:21The closer we get to Halloween, the spookier. I tend to dress, I'm like a seasonal goth
