- 0:07painting backlit clouds
- 0:09isn't extremely difficult
- 0:12but there are a few things you should
- 0:15keep in mind
- 0:17here are five tips that will help you
- 0:20get great results
- 0:25[Music]
- 0:27there is a rule in painting that says
- 0:29you should always keep the sun outside
- 0:32the picture frame
- 0:35there's a certain logic to that
- 0:37if you actually look straight into the
- 0:40sun you will be blinded and you will see
- 0:43nothing at all
- 0:45but even with the sun outside the frame
- 0:48you can create the illusion that it is
- 0:51shining brightly
- 0:53you do this by painting a color gradient
- 0:56from a very light to a very deep blue
- 1:00you may not see the sun but you feel its
- 1:03presence
- 1:07in the lower part of the sky i paint the
- 1:09color of what will later become vague
- 1:13clouds in the distance
- 1:19[Music]
- 1:49the closer to the sun the more the
- 1:52clouds will become overexposed by the
- 1:54bright light
- 1:56more about that later but for now it is
- 1:59wise to create a color gradient in your
- 2:02underpainting of the clouds
- 2:04it will be helpful later on in the
- 2:06process
- 2:08[Music]
- 2:21[Music]
- 2:26edges are essential when painting clouds
- 2:30even when they're backlit
- 2:32a hard edge isolates your cloud from its
- 2:35environment
- 2:37that's why i blur the line with my thumb
- 2:40to make the edge gradually blend into
- 2:42the rest of the cloud
- 2:50if you then paint the silver lining it's
- 2:53no longer isolated but part of the hole
- 3:03[Music]
- 3:08anyone who has ever taken a photo knows
- 3:11how sometimes a bright light source
- 3:14causes part of the image to be
- 3:16overexposed and therefore blurred
- 3:21you can use this in your painting to
- 3:23enhance the suggestion of the intense
- 3:26light of the sun
- 3:28that is why i painted transparent layer
- 3:32on top of the clouds closest to the sun
- 3:38applying these transparent layers is
- 3:41very easy if you're working on a smooth
- 3:44surface like i do on canvas it's a bit
- 3:47more difficult
- 4:02i use a color shaper to do the sparkles
- 4:05on the water
- 4:07color shapers are most commonly used to
- 4:10draw and still wet paint
- 4:12exposing the underlying color
- 4:15i often use them to draw dune grasses
- 4:18but they're also great for doing
- 4:20sparkles on the water
- 4:24in a backlight situation every tiny wave
- 4:28in the distance becomes a mirror that
- 4:30reflects the sunlight creating these
- 4:33kind of sparkles
- 4:46[Music]
- 4:50do
- 4:54[Music]
- 5:06you can't see exactly where to paint
- 5:08your highlights until the rest of the
- 5:10tonal ratios are okay
- 5:14only then can you apply them in the
- 5:16right places and properly dosed
- 5:20be careful with your highlights
- 5:23if you paint too much of them the effect
- 5:25will be lost
- 5:30the color i mainly use for my highlights
- 5:33is titanium white with a very small
- 5:36amount of vermilion red
- 5:38little medium so that the paint has
- 5:41relief and therefore catches even more
- 5:44light
- 5:51[Music]
- 6:00you
