- 0:00hello there amazing fellow teachers and
- 0:02future Educators welcome back to the
- 0:04teacher trainers Channel or if you're
- 0:07new here well it's about time you joined
- 0:09in the fun we are diving in today to one
- 0:11of the trickiest skills to teach reading
- 0:14I know I know it's not everyone's
- 0:17favorite but I promise by the end of
- 0:19this video you'll have a toolkit full of
- 0:21some simple yet awesome strategies to
- 0:23turn those sleepy yawns into Smiles
- 0:27let's be real guys reading in class can
- 0:29feel a little bit like pulling teeth
- 0:32whether the texts are too long too hard
- 0:34or just plain boring it really doesn't
- 0:37have to be that way remember back when
- 0:39we were kids and we'd get lost in
- 0:41magical tales and Fantastical stories
- 0:43for hours well somewhere along that line
- 0:47the excitement kind of Fades so it's our
- 0:49job to find and bring that little Spock
- 0:52of fire back to life now before I get
- 0:55into these juicy bits let me clear up
- 0:58one thing for students to get the most
- 1:00most out of their reading and all the
- 1:01reading activities it isn't all just
- 1:04about skimming and scanning simply to
- 1:06answer test questions we are talking
- 1:08about real reading where they can
- 1:10understand absorve and can actually talk
- 1:12or discuss about what they've just read
- 1:15that is what this video is all about
- 1:18ready for some cool interactive reading
- 1:20activities that will make your class a
- 1:22blast let's go number one the ABC
- 1:26technique this one is a crowd favorite
- 1:29here's how it it works start by
- 1:31splitting up the text into four groups a
- 1:34b c and d divide your students into
- 1:37those same four groups A B C D and
- 1:39assign each group a section of the text
- 1:42to read now after they read let them
- 1:44huddle up and discuss what they've read
- 1:47to make sure that everyone is literally
- 1:49on the same page that pun was most
- 1:52certainly then mix up the groups so that
- 1:54each new group has one student from part
- 1:57A one from Part B one from part C and so
- 2:00on now they've actually got to share
- 2:02their section of the story verbally with
- 2:05their new teammates to put together all
- 2:07parts of the reading text once all team
- 2:10members have moved around to each group
- 2:12they must then present their version in
- 2:15summary of the whole text and put it all
- 2:17together and then you can compare to see
- 2:19which group is more accurate or collect
- 2:22any common errors perhaps you can ask
- 2:24additional questions this one is a hit
- 2:27because it forces everyone to stay
- 2:29engaged at as they learn through
- 2:30collaboration and movement number two
- 2:33popcorn reading here's a classic one but
- 2:36oh so effective poorn reading give each
- 2:40student a copy of the text you'll start
- 2:42reading a little bit and stop at a
- 2:44sentence but here's the twist at any
- 2:47moment you can say popcorn and call on a
- 2:50student to take over they read a few
- 2:52lines and then pass it on to another
- 2:54classmate by saying popcorn and their
- 2:56name are you thinking wait a second
- 2:59there must be a catch here here see the
- 3:00thing about this one is that it really
- 3:02requires all students to pay attention
- 3:05because they never know when their name
- 3:07is going to pop up it's great for
- 3:09keeping students focused and on their
- 3:11toes as well as shoing up their
- 3:13listening skills picture it here's how
- 3:15to add a creative twist to reading
- 3:17because sometimes words aren't just
- 3:20enough a picture really is worth a th000
- 3:22words after reading a portion of the
- 3:24text have students draw a picture of
- 3:27what they think is happening in the
- 3:28story works great with kids this is
- 3:31especially good with descriptive texts
- 3:33once they finished drawing let them
- 3:35share their pictures with the class then
- 3:37ask them to explain how their drawing
- 3:39connects to the text this technique
- 3:41helps visual Learners and can Spar some
- 3:44awesome conversations about different
- 3:46interpretations of the text number four
- 3:48character role plays this one's perfect
- 3:51for stories especially ones with a lot
- 3:53of dialogue or action once the students
- 3:56have read the text assign each character
- 3:59to each of the students have them then
- 4:01reenact a scene from the story or even
- 4:04alternatively improvise what they think
- 4:07might happen next they'll really need to
- 4:09understand the text the characters in
- 4:11the story and even the plot to ensure
- 4:13they play their roles well and it's a
- 4:15fun way to bring the story to life lucky
- 4:17last one number five the predictions
- 4:20game who doesn't love a great plot twist
- 4:22here's a fun way to get your students
- 4:24thinking creatively before reading the
- 4:26final section of a text have students
- 4:29pred predict or guess how they think the
- 4:31story will end once they've made their
- 4:33guesses and decisions finish the reading
- 4:35and see who was the closest you'll find
- 4:37that students really love coming up with
- 4:39those creative crazy endings and it also
- 4:42encourages them to stay engaged
- 4:43throughout the text and this my friends
- 4:46is how you can turn boring reading
- 4:49classes into an eye openening not
