Full transcript
- 0:00I have a very interesting subject. I
- 0:02call it five simple steps to go from
- 0:04average to fortune.
- 0:06I've been asked to give it in many
- 0:07places for corporations and companies
- 0:09and uh now I have the opportunity to
- 0:12share it with you.
- 0:13It's a pretty big subject for someone
- 0:15like me.
- 0:16For my life started out rather modestly
- 0:19uh up in farm country in Idaho where I
- 0:21was raised.
- 0:22I found a very beautiful young lady and
- 0:25persuaded her to marry me.
- 0:27And uh kept making all of those grand
- 0:29promises as we're inclined to do that
- 0:32everything was going to work well and
- 0:34that she had made a wise decision.
- 0:36Well, two or three years after I'd
- 0:38gotten married it didn't look like my
- 0:40new bride had made such a wise decision.
- 0:42Because I'm now starting to struggle.
- 0:45I've got far too much month at the end
- 0:46of the money if you've ever known what
- 0:48that's like.
- 0:50And I'm wondering what to do. I'm behind
- 0:52on my bills.
- 0:54I'm willing to work hard, that's not my
- 0:55problem, but it isn't as going
- 0:57as well as I had thought it would up
- 0:59until that point. I'm struggling.
- 1:02And I'm wondering what to do. Should I
- 1:04go back to school and get some more
- 1:05education?
- 1:07Uh I didn't have any capital to start a
- 1:09business. I met a very remarkable man.
- 1:12His name was Mr. Shoff, Mr. Earl Shoff.
- 1:15And he's the gentleman who gave me those
- 1:17last final answers that I had been
- 1:19looking for up until that time.
- 1:21Mr. Shoff was a very unique gentleman.
- 1:22He was a businessman, an entrepreneur.
- 1:24He had several businesses.
- 1:26And he took a liking to me and he hired
- 1:28me and I went to work for him.
- 1:30I spent the next five years working for
- 1:33him.
- 1:33And then unfortunately at the end of
- 1:35that five years he died. But I did get
- 1:37to spend five years with this remarkable
- 1:39man and he's the gentleman who gave me
- 1:42the answers.
- 1:43He gave me the points and the ideas that
- 1:45helped to really turn my life around.
- 1:48And about 17 years ago I was living in
- 1:50Beverly Hills.
- 1:51And I was going through all the notes
- 1:53that I'd gathered up during that
- 1:55five-year period.
- 1:57And uh the idea came to me, why not
- 1:59share the these ideas with other people?
- 2:02I've used them to change my life. Things
- 2:04have worked out well for me. I wonder if
- 2:05others might find them interesting.
- 2:07So, I put all of the material together
- 2:09and 5 years ago gave my first lecture,
- 2:11my first seminar.
- 2:13And ever since then, I've spent more and
- 2:15more of my time lecturing and sharing
- 2:17ideas on how to do better, how to make
- 2:19your life personally, socially, and
- 2:21economically work out better. Let me
- 2:24give you this simple little talk, how to
- 2:25go from average to fortune. There's five
- 2:28simple steps.
- 2:29You might like to make a note of them.
- 2:31Here's the first one.
- 2:32Get serious.
- 2:34That's number one. I don't know any
- 2:36substitute for that.
- 2:38You've really got to get serious. You
- 2:40don't have to be grim, but you must be
- 2:42serious.
- 2:44I know a guy that's got a half a dozen
- 2:45jokes keeping him from becoming wealthy.
- 2:48He's not known as rich. He's known as a
- 2:51joker.
- 2:52Which I guess is okay if that's the kind
- 2:54of life you want to live.
- 2:56But it really isn't the best way to
- 2:57live. To go from average to fortune, you
- 2:59must get serious.
- 3:01And you must get serious about two very
- 3:03important things. Number one is setting
- 3:05your goals and where you want to go.
- 3:07Designing the next five, the next 10
- 3:10years is so vitally important.
- 3:12What do you want to do economically?
- 3:14Where do you want to go? What do you
- 3:15want to be? What would you like to have?
- 3:17What would you like to share? How much
- 3:19would you like to earn? How far would
- 3:21you like to go? Those are some major
- 3:23questions to ask. And for that all to
- 3:25work out like you want it to for the
- 3:27next five or 10 years, in my personal
- 3:29opinion, you've got to get serious.
- 3:32Then you have to get serious about
- 3:33another important subject.
- 3:35And that important subject is called
- 3:37personal development.
- 3:40Personal development is striving hard to
- 3:42become the kind of person that you want
- 3:45to be.
- 3:46And to become the kind of person you
- 3:48want to be, you've got to work at it.
- 3:5110 years from now, you will surely
- 3:52become someone. The big question is,
- 3:55who?
- 3:57What are you becoming?
- 3:58And if you go to work on it now, sure
- 4:00enough, in a very short period of time,
- 4:02you can take on a new direction to
- 4:04become the kind of person you want to
- 4:06be.
- 4:08There's a very important question to
- 4:09ask, and the question is, 10 years from
- 4:11now, you will surely arrive.
- 4:14And the question is, where?
- 4:17So, to answer the question of where you
- 4:18want to arrive and the kind of person
- 4:20you want to be, you've got to get
- 4:22serious.
- 4:23So, that's point number one. To make
- 4:25your life worthwhile and unique, to go
- 4:27from average to fortune, you've got to
- 4:29get serious.
- 4:32Now, the second point is, get smart.
- 4:36To make your life work out worthwhile,
- 4:38you've got to have some ideas. You've
- 4:40got to have the information. So, you've
- 4:42got to be smart.
- 4:43In fact, in this decade, you must be
- 4:45much smarter than you were in the last
- 4:47decade.
- 4:48You've got to read the books. You've got
- 4:49to come up with the information.
- 4:51When I have a chance to talk to the high
- 4:53school kids, that's the theme of my
- 4:54talk, get smart. There's nothing worse
- 4:57than being stupid.
- 4:59And if you will read the books, learn
- 5:00from your experiences, do all the things
- 5:02that you possibly can to get the
- 5:04information, sure enough, you'll be
- 5:06wiser this year than you were last year.
- 5:10And I've got a few techniques that I
- 5:11teach in my seminar on how to get
- 5:13smarter. Keeping a journal, going to the
- 5:16lectures, going to the seminars,
- 5:18listening to the sermons, picking up
- 5:19ideas from other people.
- 5:21You just must keep up the steady process
- 5:23of learning. Never cease your quest for
- 5:26knowledge.
- 5:28And that's one of the key points to go
- 5:29from average to fortune, get smart.
- 5:33Now, here's number three.
- 5:34You've got to get going.
- 5:37All of the things that you've learned
- 5:39will not do you that much good if you
- 5:41don't put it into an action plan. You've
- 5:43got to get going.
- 5:45In my management and leadership seminar,
- 5:47we teach game plans. How to put all the
- 5:49good things that you've learned into
- 5:51action.
- 5:52Economic action, social action, personal
- 5:55action. How to make the changes and how
- 5:57to actually do the work. How to actually
- 6:00function.
- 6:02Get going, that's the key. Some people
- 6:04are ever learning, but they don't put it
- 6:05into action.
- 6:07They don't really take the action. It's
- 6:08like the man who keeps bringing
- 6:09materials to the building site and never
- 6:11builds anything.
- 6:13He keeps bringing in the sand and the
- 6:14gravel and the windows and the doors and
- 6:16the roofing material and he just stacks
- 6:19up all these supplies, but he never
- 6:20builds anything.
- 6:22See, if you do that long enough, fairly
- 6:23soon they'll come and take you away.
- 6:25You've got to do something with what
- 6:27you've learned. You've got to take
- 6:29action. You've got to get going.
- 6:32So, that's one of the most important
- 6:33things to learn. How to design your
- 6:35days, how to design your weeks, how to
- 6:37design the months so that you take the
- 6:39proper action
- 6:41to get the proper return that you're
- 6:42looking for, whether it's economic or
- 6:44personal.
- 6:46Get going. It's a major key.
- 6:49Now, here's number four.
- 6:51You must get excited.
- 6:53And not just the false enthusiasm of
- 6:56just pure positive thinking. You've got
- 6:58to get excited over some very basic
- 6:59things. One is get excited over your
- 7:02ability to make yourself do the
- 7:04necessary things.
- 7:06Because discipline is major step one
- 7:08toward personal progress.
- 7:11And anytime a person wishes to, they can
- 7:13make major changes in their life,
- 7:15personally and socially and financially.
- 7:18It doesn't ever have to be the same
- 7:20after today.
- 7:22No telling what you could do today if
- 7:23you really wished to.
- 7:25The act of murder is a clear indication
- 7:27that a person in one drastic act can
- 7:31forever change the course of their life.
- 7:33It just happens to be in the negative
- 7:36direction.
- 7:37What I would ask you to do, starting
- 7:39today, is get excited about committing
- 7:41an act.
- 7:43An act that's positive, an act that's
- 7:45constructive. To make the changes in
- 7:47your life that you want made. And to go
- 7:50the direction that you want to go. So,
- 7:52that's number four.
- 7:54Get excited. Get excited about your
- 7:57potential.
- 7:58Human capacity is usually never the
- 8:00problem.
- 8:02Little children can learn several
- 8:03languages. We can learn to do the most
- 8:06incredible things. All we need to do is
- 8:08take the time to do it. So, it's not a
- 8:10matter of capacity.
- 8:12It's a matter of judgment, it's a matter
- 8:14of excitement, it's a matter of will,
- 8:16and it's a matter of wanting too bad
- 8:18enough. So, it's pretty exciting to know
- 8:20that any day you wish you can change
- 8:23your life. Any day you pick out, you can
- 8:25make major changes. It doesn't ever have
- 8:28to be the same again. And that's
- 8:30exciting. Knowing that intellectually
- 8:32and personally you can actually do the
- 8:35things that will make major changes in
- 8:37your life.
- 8:38That's number four.
- 8:39Here's number five.
- 8:42Number five is get away.
- 8:44I have found especially in the last 15
- 8:4720 years that there's an important thing
- 8:49called life balance.
- 8:51You've got to learn to get away. You
- 8:53must learn to get away and be alone.
- 8:55Learn to get away and reflect. Learn to
- 8:58get away and learn how to live as well
- 9:00as how to earn.
- 9:01How sad it would be to learn how to earn
- 9:03well, but not learn how to live well.
- 9:06You must balance your life.
- 9:09We teach something especially in my
- 9:10staff, I teach it something called
- 9:12lifestyle. Lifestyle is how you learn to
- 9:16live your life.
- 9:18Some people have money, but they don't
- 9:19even know how to spend it. They have
- 9:22time, but they don't know how to spend
- 9:23it. Some people are successful, but they
- 9:25don't know how to spend their success.
- 9:27They don't know what to do with it. They
- 9:30don't get joy from it, rather they get
- 9:32animosity.
- 9:33A father takes $5, crushes it, and
- 9:36throws it at his son, and says if you
- 9:37need it that bad take it.
- 9:40Now it's the same $5,
- 9:42but instead of dispensing it with joy,
- 9:45he dispenses it with animosity.
- 9:48That's the difference in not knowing how
- 9:49to live. It's called lifestyle.
- 9:52Then you've got to take time to
- 9:54cultivate good friends. You've got to
- 9:56take time to be with your family. You've
- 9:59got to take time to be with the people
- 10:01who are important to you. Designing your
- 10:04life in those respects.
- 10:07Get
- 10:09away.
- 10:10Take the time. Reflect on your life.
- 10:14Recharge your batteries.
- 10:16Do some growing away from your
- 10:18enterprise. Then when you come back to
- 10:21your enterprise after you have taken
- 10:22this time to balance your life,
- 10:24you will find that on the job, working
- 10:26on your enterprise, things will really
- 10:28go much better.
- 10:30So those are the five simple steps to go
- 10:32from average to fortune.
- 10:35Get serious.
- 10:36Get smart.
- 10:38Get going.
- 10:41Get excited.
- 10:42And get away.
- 10:45I hope those points will be valuable for
- 10:46you as you consider them. Do not walk in
- 10:48front of me.
- 10:50I may not follow.
- 10:52Do not walk behind me.
- 10:54I may not lead.
- 10:56But walk beside me
- 10:58and be my friend.
- 10:59Thank you for listening.
