- 0:05hey guys it's Tim here and today I'd
- 0:07like to announce the official release of
- 0:09my caob course over at cubing Dogg the
- 0:12goal of this course is to meet you
- 0:13wherever you are at in your caob journey
- 0:16so whether you're a beginner
- 0:17intermediate solver or a pro cuber there
- 0:18will be something of value in this
- 0:20course for you in today's video I'd like
- 0:22to give you a taste of what the course
- 0:23has to offer by showing you five areas
- 0:25that hold people back in their f2l
- 0:27solving so hopefully by the end of this
- 0:29video you'll have an idea of what's
- 0:31stopping you from improving and you'll
- 0:32have a plan on how to move forward let's
- 0:34get started so reason number one is not
- 0:37knowing the best solutions for each f2l
- 0:38pair so when you first learn f2l it's
- 0:41most likely you learned it using an
- 0:43intuitive method which is good but once
- 0:45you're comfortable with that you should
- 0:46start learning algorithms for each pair
- 0:48so that you know exactly what to do when
- 0:50you see that pair so if you're using
- 0:51intuitive s2l you might find that you're
- 0:53doing a lot of rotations for each pair
- 0:55you might find that you're also doing
- 0:57unnecessary triggers and you're not sure
- 0:59what you're really doing of them so as
- 1:01an example we have this Paar and uh this
- 1:04is a Paar that takes a lot of moves to
- 1:05solve but just knowing one solution
- 1:07that's good for this pair will make you
- 1:09very confident every time you see this
- 1:11pair and so then you can solve it
- 1:12quickly also learning a specific
- 1:14solution for each f2l case will help you
- 1:17to develop good look ahead because each
- 1:19time the way the pieces are moving
- 1:20around the cube is the same so over time
- 1:22you'll memorize how each piece moves
- 1:24when you do that algorithm so as an
- 1:26example of a case you might encounter
- 1:28this pair you split the pair with R U2 R
- 1:32Prime and then you solve this case with
- 1:35r u r Prime and then you just insert the
- 1:39slot another example is when you have
- 1:42this pair in the back this is generally
- 1:44a hard pair but it's even worse when you
- 1:46get it in the back slot so the way to
- 1:48deal with this is you put it over here
- 1:51do a soon and then you insert it
- 1:54here another example is this pair right
- 1:57here where the corner is solved and the
- 1:58EDG is in the top layer so this is a
- 2:01difficult case because there's just no
- 2:02good solutions for it but one that I
- 2:05recommend is fime then solving the fre
- 2:09remover which breaks the cross but you
- 2:11solve it with r u r Prime and then you
- 2:14insert this cross piece back with u
- 2:16Prime RP Prime f r so your goal should
- 2:20be to be able to do each pair from every
- 2:23angle or at least have an idea of what
- 2:25your ideal solution is for every angle
- 2:27of every pair but at the start that
- 2:29might seem very daunting so just to
- 2:31start learn each f2l case for the front
- 2:34right slot when it's oriented and then
- 2:36you can move on to other slots from
- 2:38other angles later so to find good f2l
- 2:40Solutions I'd recommend my cop course
- 2:43airing. as it's all of the algs I
- 2:45recommend I go over all angles and all
- 2:47the weird dials you can do for back
- 2:49slots and side slots stuff like that a
- 2:51free resource is looking over top Q Rec
- 2:54constructions however that does make it
- 2:55pretty difficult to find the specific Al
- 2:58you're looking for so the course is a
- 2:59really good good resource to find
- 3:01whatever weird case you're looking for
- 3:03really quickly so reason number two is
- 3:05not using Keyhole Keyhole is a very
- 3:07useful technique for f2l which allows
- 3:09you to do XC crosses very easily and it
- 3:11just helps you deal with really bad
- 3:12cases in the middle of f2l so Keyhole is
- 3:15pretty much where you have one piece
- 3:16already solved and the other piece is in
- 3:18the top layer usually and then you
- 3:21misalign the D layer so that the free
- 3:23slot is over another free slot and then
- 3:26this allows you to insert the piece in
- 3:28the top layer into that free slot then
- 3:31you can undo the D move and you solve
- 3:33the pair normally this would take a lot
- 3:36more moves as this corner is in the slot
- 3:39and it's kind of blocking your way into
- 3:40the slot so you might have to do
- 3:42something like this which is a lot more
- 3:45moves so here's another example where I
- 3:48can use Keyhole to make an xross uh so
- 3:52this Edge is solved with this corner
- 3:54attached to it and this red Edge is also
- 3:56solved so we just need to solve this
- 3:58Edge and this Edge and and then ideally
- 4:01I want to solve the edge that
- 4:02corresponds to this corner as well so
- 4:04then I get a free pair at the start of
- 4:06F12 so to do that I can solve this uh
- 4:08edge with an L2 and I can insert this
- 4:12Edge and then the edge that corresponds
- 4:15to the corner is right here and we
- 4:16already have the cross Miss aligned so
- 4:19since this is not solved either the
- 4:21corner Deco between these two edges I
- 4:23can just use this free slot to insert
- 4:25this Edge then I can align the cross and
- 4:28I have an xross so the next reason is
- 4:30bad look ahead the idea of look ahead is
- 4:33that while you're solving one thing
- 4:35you're looking ahead to the next thing
- 4:37you're going to solve so as an example I
- 4:39finished my xcross and I want to solve a
- 4:42second pair so I look at this pair and
- 4:45now that I've identified what the pair
- 4:47is I can immediately start ignoring it
- 4:50just solve it by muscle memory and while
- 4:52I'm doing that I'm trying to find my
- 4:54next pair so in this case I see this
- 4:56piece and this piece so I'm tracking
- 4:59those two while I'm doing the first pair
- 5:02so this Edge is going here and the
- 5:04corner is back here and then I can
- 5:07immediately rotate and start doing the
- 5:09next pair and I can just keep doing that
- 5:11for the whole s so this allows you to
- 5:14pause way less during solves and if you
- 5:16have perfect look ahead I guess you
- 5:18don't pause at all but that's pretty
- 5:19rare so the first thing you need to do
- 5:22to be able to like start practicing look
- 5:24ahead is make sure you know how you're
- 5:27going to solve each pair so that ties
- 5:29into our first point you just need to
- 5:30know all of your Solutions or you just
- 5:32need to be able to do your pairs blind
- 5:34but it's pretty hard to do that without
- 5:35knowing the algs so as an example I can
- 5:38look at this pair and close my eyes and
- 5:41just do it and it's solved so once you
- 5:44can do that that means that if you have
- 5:46a pair instead of closing your eyes you
- 5:48just move your eyes to the next pair and
- 5:50start tracking it so it's right here so
- 5:53once you're able to do pairs blindfolded
- 5:55you should move on to doing solves where
- 5:57let's say you predict your cross so here
- 6:00uh I predicted that I need to do D Prime
- 6:02RP Prime to solve this piece and then
- 6:04I'll solve this piece and this piece
- 6:06with U2 L Prime frime L and then align
- 6:10the cross with d so then while I'm doing
- 6:13that I'm not looking at the cross I'm
- 6:15just looking for my next pair so I see
- 6:17this piece I see this
- 6:19piece and they're going to end up here
- 6:22and here so then I'm going straight into
- 6:25that and while doing that I'm not
- 6:27looking at those pieces I'm looking for
- 6:28this pair
- 6:30and then while I'm doing that pair I'm
- 6:32looking for this piece and trying to
- 6:34find the other one so then I see it's
- 6:36here and then while I'm doing this pair
- 6:39I'm looking at this piece and this
- 6:42piece and I just do that for all of us2
- 6:45and then you can even try doing it for
- 6:46last layer but it's much harder cuz
- 6:48there are more pieces to track another
- 6:50drill you can try is doing one pair and
- 6:53then trying to predict where your next
- 6:55pair is going to be before you start
- 6:57doing that so I'm going to do this pair
- 6:59first and then I'm going to make the red
- 7:02green pair my second pair so this is the
- 7:04corner and this is The Edge now I'm
- 7:06going to solve this with just Lu moves
- 7:08into the back here so I know that this
- 7:10corner will stay here and the edge I
- 7:14believe is going to end up in the same
- 7:16place that is right now I'm not quite
- 7:19sure so I'm going to close my eyes do
- 7:22this
- 7:23fair and I think I messed up but let's
- 7:25say it is where I thought it ended up so
- 7:27I'm going to do this corner and this
- 7:29Edge
- 7:30and yeah I got it wrong but as you can
- 7:33see that is a good Jewel as is Pretty
- 7:35challenging even for me so it's a good
- 7:37way to practice your look Ahad and if
- 7:39you're able to predict your second pair
- 7:41that makes it so you're two pairs ahead
- 7:43on your look Ahad so you have a lot of
- 7:45time to find your third pair or fourth
- 7:46pair whatever so the next point is not
- 7:49utilizing inspection enough the more you
- 7:51can predict an inspection the easier
- 7:52look ahead it will get so if you predict
- 7:55cross you have let's say 7 Seconds to
- 7:59predict your first pair but if you
- 8:01predict cross plus one well then you've
- 8:04already predicted that first pair so you
- 8:05have another maybe half a second to a
- 8:07second of time where you can predict
- 8:09your next pair which would be the second
- 8:10pair in that case and if you predict
- 8:12cross plus two well then you have a ton
- 8:14of time to predict pair free so the more
- 8:16you inspect the better you're going to
- 8:17get a look ahead or the easier you'll
- 8:20make it for yourself to get good look
- 8:21ahead so how do you go from let's say
- 8:24being able to predict Three cross pieces
- 8:26to planning cross plus one so
- 8:28essentially
- 8:30you just want to think about where the
- 8:31pieces you're looking at are going and
- 8:33this might take you minutes or sometimes
- 8:36hours let's say you make it the goal to
- 8:38predict pair one well if you're only
- 8:41able to predict Three cross pieces you
- 8:43might need to spend 15 to 20 minutes on
- 8:45this but if you do that 15 to 20 minutes
- 8:47like 10 times so you spend hours
- 8:50practicing it at some point you're going
- 8:52to get good enough at it that is going
- 8:53to be automatic and you don't even
- 8:55really need to think about it so in this
- 8:56case I can predict two pairs pretty
- 8:58easily
- 9:01like that because well I've spent like
- 9:04thousands of hours practicing that it
- 9:06just comes naturally to me but trust me
- 9:08at the start it was very difficult last
- 9:10year when I was in Ohio for the Great
- 9:12Lakes Championship I was staying at a
- 9:14friend's place for uh about a week and
- 9:17he was at University so he would leave
- 9:19in the morning and come back in the
- 9:20evening and for those like 6 to 8 hours
- 9:22that he was at University I'd just be
- 9:24sitting at his place going between doing
- 9:26attempts of predicting full f2l that
- 9:28would take me like anywhere from 2 to 10
- 9:31minutes and then doing a few of those
- 9:33getting really tired taking a few hours
- 9:35break and then going back to it then
- 9:37he'd come back home and I'd be like yeah
- 9:39I predicted f2l once so this is
- 9:41something that's going to take a lot of
- 9:42effort and a lot of time and that's
- 9:44completely normal you won't get it right
- 9:46at first but it's really rewarding when
- 9:48you do get it right and you see that the
- 9:50pieces you planning are solved and it's
- 9:51also a very tiring drill so don't be
- 9:54worried if you notice that you get tired
- 9:55after a few attempts that's normal but
- 9:58over time that fatigue is going to make
- 9:59you better so just keep doing it and
- 10:02don't don't go too hard cuz you might
- 10:04fry your brain so once you've developed
- 10:07good look ahead it's also very important
- 10:09to start looking for edges that are
- 10:10oriented and a lot of people don't
- 10:12understand Edge orientation in f2l like
- 10:14at all so the basic concept is that if
- 10:17an edge is uh matching the top color
- 10:20with your front or back Center that
- 10:22means it's oriented and when it's
- 10:24oriented it means you can solve that
- 10:27edge and its whole f2l pair we have just
- 10:30r l and U moves so it's just nice finger
- 10:34tricks essentially and if you have the
- 10:36opposite where the top color of the edge
- 10:38is matching either the right or the left
- 10:40side that means You' have to rotate to
- 10:42use r or L moves to solve it so with
- 10:46this let's say we have these two pairs
- 10:49if I just looked ahead to these two
- 10:51edges and I see this one is oriented and
- 10:53this one is misoriented well then I can
- 10:56just choose this pair based off of that
- 10:58and then that eliminates an extra
- 11:00rotation because if I were to do this
- 11:02pair first I would rotate and I have to
- 11:06rotate back for this pair since I left
- 11:09it so once you develop a good
- 11:11understanding of EO you can move on to
- 11:13pseudo slotting because EO is very
- 11:15fundamental to doing pseudo sloting and
- 11:17without it you can't really tell which
- 11:19pairs are which so for example these two
- 11:22pairs are exactly the same except in
- 11:25this case the edge is oriented and in
- 11:27this case the edge is misoriented if if
- 11:29you don't see that then you just do this
- 11:31for both pairs and one would end up with
- 11:33a misoriented edge and the other would
- 11:34get
- 11:35solved so the way youd recognize that in
- 11:38a solve is this color here on the top is
- 11:41matching the center and right here top
- 11:44color is matching the side so that's how
- 11:46you know this is a flip pair so to solve
- 11:48it you would split the pieces and then
- 11:50solve it with a free mover whereas this
- 11:52one is just a Sol slot so you can answer
- 11:55it like that the pseudo is a very
- 11:57difficult concept to understand and get
- 11:59good that but we go over how to practice
- 12:01it and how to understand it better in
- 12:02the course so the last reason is very
- 12:05fundamental and that is bad technique so
- 12:07for example bad finger tricks an example
- 12:10of that specifically would be right here
- 12:12I want to solve this pair and to do that
- 12:14I need to do R U2 R Prime but in this
- 12:19case the only efficient way to do those
- 12:21three moves is to do a left to U2 and
- 12:24then R Prime cuz otherwise either you
- 12:26have to do U Prime U prime or or you
- 12:29have to regrip your right hand to the
- 12:30bottom and then the normal you with your
- 12:32right hand and both of those lose a lot
- 12:35of time so learning all the basic finger
- 12:38tricks is very important for fast f2l
- 12:40and then getting good at those finger
- 12:42tricks being very very precise with them
- 12:45and being able to do them quickly and
- 12:46under pressure is another thing so first
- 12:49you need to learn all the finger tricks
- 12:51and be familiar with when to use them so
- 12:53some finger tricks you have to make sure
- 12:55that you learn so that you can learn all
- 12:57the algs that are out there for example
- 12:59Le s moves there are two types of s
- 13:01moves there's a regular s move where you
- 13:03do it like this so the other type of s
- 13:05move would be like a push move like that
- 13:08which I can do just on a cube like this
- 13:10but doing it in an algorithm is very
- 13:12difficult so just make sure you learn
- 13:14this with both hands and that unlocks a
- 13:17lot of algorithms for you like for
- 13:19example you can do a cross Edge like
- 13:21this of course besides that you need to
- 13:23know all of the U2 finger tricks D2
- 13:26finger tricks and stuff like pinch F
- 13:28moves you need to to know how to do M
- 13:30moves with either right or left hand
- 13:32usually you don't need both although for
- 13:34some OLS doing M with your left hand is
- 13:36also useful so if you can learn it with
- 13:38both hands and then you need to know how
- 13:40to do double m2s which are only used for
- 13:43H and Z prims so you just need to learn
- 13:46M2 with one hand and then you'll do all
- 13:48your oves with the other and then you
- 13:51need to be able to do them precisely so
- 13:53to do that you would essentially do very
- 13:56slow solves where you focus on each turn
- 13:59and completing it exactly so that the
- 14:02magnets align and help you complete the
- 14:04turn and you're never relying on Corner
- 14:06cutting because once you start turning
- 14:08faster you'll naturally start Corner
- 14:10cutting but if you're using Corner
- 14:11cutting when you're turning slowly then
- 14:13you're going to end up relying on it way
- 14:15too much in your actual solves and
- 14:17you'll have a lot of lockups it's going
- 14:19to be very difficult to implement any of
- 14:21these points if you have the wrong
- 14:22mindset I believe that you shouldn't
- 14:25Focus too much on your results you
- 14:26should focus on improving your Technique
- 14:28and algorithms at all times so when
- 14:30you're practicing don't focus on what
- 14:32times and averages you're getting just
- 14:34focus on improving a certain aspect of
- 14:36yourselves and over time your times are
- 14:38sure to go down so my course is
- 14:41currently available at cubing Dogg for
- 14:43$50 off from the full price which will
- 14:46be the case for next week after this
- 14:47video is released the course covers
- 14:49everything from the basics to the most
- 14:51advanced aspects of cfop so it goes from
- 14:54not knowing how to solve cross and
- 14:56teaching you how to get better at Cross
- 14:57and doing it more efficiently to
- 14:59intuitive f2l and then all of the best
- 15:01solutions for all the f2l cases from
- 15:03every angle to how to do pseudo slotting
- 15:05and how to get better at it and then it
- 15:06teaches all of O PL and then teaches all
- 15:09of the zbl algorithms that I use and how
- 15:11to recognize the cases the link will be
- 15:13at the top of the description so if
- 15:14you're interested check it out so I hope
- 15:16you learned a lot from this video and
- 15:18that's all for me today see you
