  1. 0:08open your Bibles with me to Paul's
  2. 0:11letter to the Ephesians chapter chapter
  3. 0:135 and yes I assign my
  4. 0:16shortest passage in the whole series and
  5. 0:19that wasn't really intentional but maybe
  6. 0:21it was I don't know so so just kind of
  7. 0:25to paint the flow here for where we've
  8. 0:27been going for months months now so
  9. 0:29Paul's been immersing these new
  10. 0:32Christians in their new identity right
  11. 0:35this has been a big theme and so Paul in
  12. 0:37the first three chapters remember he's
  13. 0:38retelling the story of what happened in
  14. 0:40Jesus about God's decision about screwed
  15. 0:44up sinful self focused human beings to
  16. 0:48permanently commit himself to love us to
  17. 0:52bind himself to us by becoming human by
  18. 0:55creating a new reconciled family of
  19. 0:57Jesus people out of Jew and non-jew and
  20. 1:00where he takes up personal residence by
  21. 1:02means of the Spirit and so a big part of
  22. 1:04what we've been tracing is how Paul is
  23. 1:06just immersing these Christians in their
  24. 1:08identity
  25. 1:09you used to be whoever whoever you were
  26. 1:12before you heard the story about Jesus
  27. 1:13but if you've put your trust in Jesus
  28. 1:15and have become a part of his people and
  29. 1:17placed your faith in him then you are in
  30. 1:20new new think of all of the new types of
  31. 1:23identity that we've discovered here in
  32. 1:25in Paul's letter to the Ephesians your
  33. 1:27new kinds of humans he said this more
  34. 1:29than one time - what do times he said
  35. 1:31you're holy you actually are distinct
  36. 1:34and set apart now from your previous
  37. 1:36identity he says that you're more loved
  38. 1:39than you can possibly imagine your
  39. 1:42beloved children your children of the
  40. 1:44light you don't have to live in the dark
  41. 1:46anymore and so as we moved into chapter
  42. 1:504 and then 5 Paul's been really specific
  43. 1:53and clear you'll remember about laying
  44. 1:55out what we're calling parameters and
  45. 1:57these parameters are indications of what
  46. 2:01living into this new identity looks like
  47. 2:03what does sex and money in relationships
  48. 2:06and anger and work and generosity and
  49. 2:09work ethic and how does all of this look
  50. 2:10like in light of who we really are now
  51. 2:12in Jesus and so he's been painting these
  52. 2:15parameters and so over this little it's
  53. 2:17just a little paragraph right here
  54. 2:19chapter 5 verses 15 through 21 and he
  55. 2:22actually takes a new turn here because
  56. 2:24he doesn't really describe any
  57. 2:26parameters here what he does want to do
  58. 2:29is show the immense amount of freedom
  59. 2:31that we have and so I want to pick up
  60. 2:33illustration the JA shoes last week and
  61. 2:35then we'll kind of dive we'll dive into
  62. 2:37the text here any Josh mentioned this it
  63. 2:40really resonated with me and I kind of
  64. 2:42fought through it and I actually lived
  65. 2:44through it in this last week because he
  66. 2:46talked about Paul as being like a loving
  67. 2:48parent who's trying to give these kids
  68. 2:50these new children's spiritual children
  69. 2:53of his freedom by giving them parameters
  70. 2:56and that sounds paradoxical to us or
  71. 2:59maybe even contradictory but I mean free
  72. 3:00to we think of freedom as having no
  73. 3:02parameters I can do whatever I want
  74. 3:04but that's not at least the Gospels
  75. 3:06version of freedom doing whatever you
  76. 3:08want leads to ruined human lives and so
  77. 3:11it's actually in the freedom of having
  78. 3:13parameters so I actually just live I
  79. 3:16lived it this week because I'm the
  80. 3:18parent of a small two-year-old caveman
  81. 3:20and so and otherwise known as a toddler
  82. 3:23but toddlers and cavemen really they're
  83. 3:26about the same same kind of mentality
  84. 3:27and so in in love we have to lay down
  85. 3:32parameters one of my goals as a parent
  86. 3:34is is to just burn into this little
  87. 3:37guy's psyche how loved and committed we
  88. 3:40are to him no matter what for the long
  89. 3:42haul right that's about his identity but
  90. 3:44I also have as one of my goals as a
  91. 3:46parent to lay out parameters and keep
  92. 3:49him from killing himself basically which
  93. 3:51would happen almost every day I'm
  94. 3:53certain if I didn't intervene you write
  95. 3:55or Jessica did didn't intervene because
  96. 3:56he's just into everything and so we've
  97. 3:58laid out parameters like in our home
  98. 4:00where we have a whole room that's
  99. 4:02off-limits to him through the little
  100. 4:05door you know the little door prevented
  101. 4:06his door that guy that thing there and
  102. 4:08then we have about three cupboards that
  103. 4:10are that are off-limits to him because
  104. 4:12there's like knives in there and they're
  105. 4:13sewing needles up in the room and so on
  106. 4:15and so like we've created these
  107. 4:17parameters and we pay attention as
  108. 4:19pouring like a parameters that cramps my
  109. 4:21style or whatever we tend to focus on
  110. 4:23parameters what I'm being told I can't
  111. 4:25do but what we usually neglect and what
  112. 4:27roman often neglect when he's obsessing
  113. 4:29over what's in that cupboard is the fact
  114. 4:31that the whole rest of the house is open
  115. 4:33to him I mean even my stuff that I leave
  116. 4:35in his presence is open to him and he
  117. 4:37gets into it all of the time I often
  118. 4:39have packs of chewing gum that I buy
  119. 4:41specifically for the purpose
  120. 4:42so putting in my mouth when I finished
  121. 4:44teaching because you know I've been
  122. 4:45talking for a long time and so he just
  123. 4:47he can't he can't prevent himself from
  124. 4:51getting in to bite you and go I don't
  125. 4:52know what it is he just loves it but
  126. 4:54whatever you know the whole house is
  127. 4:55open to him except these little spaces
  128. 4:57this immense amount of freedom and so
  129. 5:00what Paul has been doing is just kind of
  130. 5:02map this on to Ephesians then is he's
  131. 5:03been laying out these parameters of what
  132. 5:05it means to live into our new identity
  133. 5:07and there's really not that many and
  134. 5:09what it does is it leaves open this
  135. 5:12whole part of our lives our day-to-day
  136. 5:14lives where there's just absolute
  137. 5:16freedom to live as these new kinds of
  138. 5:20people and the most of what we do in our
  139. 5:22day to day lives doesn't cross those
  140. 5:24parameters it involves just like work
  141. 5:26and family and finding some career path
  142. 5:29or providing for myself or others or
  143. 5:31doing so I mean that's that stuff and
  144. 5:32you search the Bible in vain for God
  145. 5:34telling you like where to move and where
  146. 5:36to get a job or something you know so
  147. 5:38like there's no parameters on that
  148. 5:40there's just freedom and so here's what
  149. 5:43Paul says to this community of his
  150. 5:45spiritual children he's laid out the
  151. 5:46parameters to protect the freedom of
  152. 5:49these new Christians and here he's going
  153. 5:52to guide us into the arena of freedom
  154. 5:54and what does Paul have to say as he
  155. 5:56guides people into areas of freedom read
  156. 5:59verse 15 he says be be supercareful
  157. 6:04be really careful then how you live not
  158. 6:08as unwise but as wise making the most of
  159. 6:13every opportunity because the days are
  160. 6:15evil you know therefore don't be foolish
  161. 6:19but understand what the Lord's will is
  162. 6:23don't get drunk on wine which leads to
  163. 6:27debauchery a word none of us used in the
  164. 6:30last month I'm certain perhaps
  165. 6:31debauchery instead be filled with the
  166. 6:34spirit speaking to one another with
  167. 6:36Psalms hymns and songs from the spirit
  168. 6:38sing and make music from your heart to
  169. 6:42the Lord always giving thanks to God the
  170. 6:45Father for everything in the name of our
  171. 6:47Lord Jesus Christ and submit to one
  172. 6:50another out of reverence for Christ this
  173. 6:53all this all goes together and actually
  174. 6:56as we read that
  175. 6:56paragraph it's kind of like reading a
  176. 6:58little top ten like bumper sticker
  177. 7:00verses that Christians like to put on
  178. 7:03their cars or something like that you
  179. 7:04know it's still got a bunch of great
  180. 7:05little one-liners about that oh yeah
  181. 7:07wise and you know discern the Lord's
  182. 7:10will and be filled with the spirit and
  183. 7:12Psalms and stuff but how does all of
  184. 7:14this go together this is all what Paul
  185. 7:16is doing what are your guiding light as
  186. 7:19you go out into your life as a Christian
  187. 7:21you know what the parameters are but
  188. 7:23most of your life is just open there
  189. 7:25before you like what are you supposed to
  190. 7:27do and how do you know how to make
  191. 7:29decisions in the areas of great freedom
  192. 7:32that we have as Christians and Paul says
  193. 7:34Paul says wisdom discerning God's will
  194. 7:39and being filled with the spirit as your
  195. 7:44guiding lights as you go into your
  196. 7:46freedom as a Christian and you know that
  197. 7:49you're tapping into and using those when
  198. 7:51your life results in being connected
  199. 7:54with music giving thanks and submitting
  200. 7:57to other people so do I need to say any
  201. 8:01more I think I'll just kind of wrap it
  202. 8:02up right here at me go settle off so so
  203. 8:05no no there's many things we could
  204. 8:07explore and we don't have time to do
  205. 8:08them all I just want to really what I
  206. 8:09want to focus in on is how these three
  207. 8:12these three things with them discerning
  208. 8:14God's will and being filled with the
  209. 8:16spirit because they go they go together
  210. 8:18look down with me at verse 15 he begins
  211. 8:20by saying is you consider this arena of
  212. 8:22freedom in your life he says just be
  213. 8:25super intentional be super careful your
  214. 8:30decisions matter what you do in your
  215. 8:32day-to-day life it really matters how
  216. 8:34you live matters be really intentional
  217. 8:38and careful and then what he gives is
  218. 8:40these three three pairs there's three
  219. 8:44little contrasting pairs and you may not
  220. 8:46have noticed them as you read as you
  221. 8:48read through but there's three pairs he
  222. 8:49says not this but this not this but this
  223. 8:52not this but this three pairs did you
  224. 8:54see them here what's the first pair you
  225. 8:55see it he says not as unwise but wise
  226. 9:00making the most of every opportunity
  227. 9:02verse 17 therefore it don't be foolish
  228. 9:04but understand the Lord's will don't get
  229. 9:09hammered but be filled with the spirit
  230. 9:12do you see them there
  231. 9:13these three pairs now let me kind of
  232. 9:14throw them up here and my alignment got
  233. 9:17off there there you go perpetual
  234. 9:20PowerPoint problems there's a lot of
  235. 9:22peas in one sentence
  236. 9:23so serif you've got if you want to work
  237. 9:25I don't know work on that in between in
  238. 9:28between the service was where so but you
  239. 9:30guys see that there you see the three
  240. 9:31pairs right so and they're not just a
  241. 9:34ragbag of topics like here Oh Paul just
  242. 9:37thought of wisdom that's a good thing to
  243. 9:38talk about now and no deserting God's
  244. 9:40well you know oh it's good to put that
  245. 9:41in or something nice really really you
  246. 9:43really choosing his words carefully and
  247. 9:45all of these the three don'ts and the
  248. 9:48three dues are all connected right so so
  249. 9:52in this area of freedom as we approach
  250. 9:54our lives there's no rules there's just
  251. 9:57go be a human being so here's the
  252. 10:00parameters sex that can really set you
  253. 10:02you're often money and generosity in
  254. 10:04relationships so let's get the
  255. 10:05parameters there about what it means to
  256. 10:07be a huge new human what are you going
  257. 10:08to do with your life now and he uses
  258. 10:11these three these three pairs right here
  259. 10:14wisdom discerning God's will and being
  260. 10:17filled with the spirit and they're all
  261. 10:18connected so somehow Paul's definition
  262. 10:21of what it means to be a wise person is
  263. 10:23waking up and having an intuition or
  264. 10:26learning is you going through like what
  265. 10:27God's will for that day is and if you're
  266. 10:31going to be a wise person who knows how
  267. 10:33to discern God's will for what you're
  268. 10:34doing on any given day what that means
  269. 10:36is you need to learn how to be
  270. 10:38influenced by the Spirit and there's
  271. 10:41going to be three behaviors that are
  272. 10:43constantly going to sabotage your
  273. 10:44ability to be a fully mature human being
  274. 10:47and that's being stupid and getting
  275. 10:50drunk because that's going to ruin
  276. 10:52everything it's going to set you back
  277. 10:54strides from growing and maturing as a
  278. 10:57Christian so let's kind of let's dive
  279. 10:59into these real quick here into these
  280. 11:00three and you'll see how they how they
  281. 11:02issue into the the spirit influence
  282. 11:04applies so he says be careful don't be
  283. 11:07unwise but wise and here's what's
  284. 11:10interesting when you hear the English
  285. 11:11word wise I think most of us we we think
  286. 11:14of something that happens in your head
  287. 11:16right we think of someone's wise we
  288. 11:18think of someone who's smart writer who
  289. 11:20has a lot of a lot of insight
  290. 11:23and that's involved in what the Bible's
  291. 11:25trying to get as it talks about wisdom
  292. 11:27but there's a number of things going on
  293. 11:30but the Bible has is a more robust
  294. 11:32really different version of what wisdom
  295. 11:34is the Bible talks about knowledge it
  296. 11:37talks about understanding but you notice
  297. 11:39it has different words for that wisdom
  298. 11:41and particularly Paul's it has one Old
  299. 11:44Testament passage in the back of his
  300. 11:45head here and this might Joe it always
  301. 11:47point this out to you because I'm a geek
  302. 11:48right so it's from Exodus chapter 31 and
  303. 11:51lets us read the passage here and you'll
  304. 11:53see how Paul's drawing on the language
  305. 11:56of this passage here this is where the
  306. 11:58Israelites are at Mount Sinai
  307. 12:00they've been redeemed out of slavery in
  308. 12:01Egypt and God's designing his own
  309. 12:04personal dwelling place in the midst of
  310. 12:06his people that he's redeemed and so the
  311. 12:09Lord said to Moses he said see I've
  312. 12:11chosen Bethel lo the son of early the
  313. 12:14son of who are the son of Judah and I
  314. 12:17have filled him with the Spirit of God
  315. 12:19with wisdom come on
  316. 12:22right it's right there you see it you
  317. 12:25see it so and and because I like to do
  318. 12:28this kind of thing here's the Hebrew
  319. 12:30word for wisdom right right there you
  320. 12:33want to take a crack at pronouncing it
  321. 12:35it's a yeah right here like what those
  322. 12:37are not sounds my mouth is used to
  323. 12:39making so the KH is the letter in Hebrew
  324. 12:43oh right oh ho ma don't you lay with me
  325. 12:48oh c'mon
  326. 12:49okay I have filled him with my spirit
  327. 12:53that is with hokhmah and understanding
  328. 12:58and knowledge with all kinds of skills
  329. 13:01rescue - and and what's the how do you
  330. 13:05know this guy is filled with the Divine
  331. 13:06Spirit and hokhmah we'll look he's going
  332. 13:10to make artistic designs for work and
  333. 13:13gold and silver and bronze and to cut
  334. 13:15and set stones and to work in wood and
  335. 13:16engage in all kinds all kinds of crafts
  336. 13:19the the base vision of wisdom in the
  337. 13:22Bible is actually not necessarily your
  338. 13:25IQ or how smart you are
  339. 13:28do you have to have advanced degrees to
  340. 13:30be an artisan no you just have to be
  341. 13:34really good at doing this kind of
  342. 13:36right and you get how do you get good at
  343. 13:38doing this kind of thing well you do a
  344. 13:40lot of it right you practice and so on
  345. 13:42and then in this case God is animating
  346. 13:45this skill set that this guy has so
  347. 13:49wisdom at least in these passages and a
  348. 13:52lot of others like the Bible wisdom is a
  349. 13:54skill that you cultivate about bringing
  350. 13:57potential out of something and making
  351. 14:00something awesome it's about taking the
  352. 14:02raw materials here's a like a whole
  353. 14:04bunch of gold earrings melt them down
  354. 14:06vessel and make something awesome that
  355. 14:08this functions as a candle right so
  356. 14:10there's make sure there's that place for
  357. 14:11seven candles but just go for it it
  358. 14:13needs to have flowers on it okay Rhett
  359. 14:15just go right there's just freedom here
  360. 14:17take bring the raw potential out of this
  361. 14:21material and make something awesome
  362. 14:23that's wholesome ah and and God
  363. 14:26apparently takes great joy in investing
  364. 14:28his own personal presence in the lives
  365. 14:31of people to inspire them to make
  366. 14:34something and so when Paul saying be
  367. 14:37careful how you live not as unwise but
  368. 14:40as wise look how he defines it look back
  369. 14:42down here at verse 16
  370. 14:44how did he define what it means to be
  371. 14:45wise not as smart or super intellectual
  372. 14:49or bookish what does he say in verse 16
  373. 14:51what is wisdom
  374. 14:53he says it's making the most of every
  375. 14:56opportunity so this isn't actually
  376. 15:00particularly religious well Paul saying
  377. 15:03is this whole just swath of our lives
  378. 15:05their day-to-day lives
  379. 15:07there's just relationships and work and
  380. 15:09bills and what you do with your time and
  381. 15:12you can as a Christian be really stupid
  382. 15:16and just not make the most of your life
  383. 15:19and you're still a Christian Jesus is
  384. 15:21utterly committed to you and He loves
  385. 15:23you but you're just not you're not being
  386. 15:25wise with your lives how then should we
  387. 15:28live in our new identity he urged is
  388. 15:32going to urge us every one of us by the
  389. 15:34presence of God in our lives has this
  390. 15:37presence that's urging us to become more
  391. 15:39and more capable of just making good
  392. 15:41decisions with our lives
  393. 15:43you have people you have relationships
  394. 15:45you have your past you have your history
  395. 15:47you have whatever your story is
  396. 15:49and you are absolutely loved and
  397. 15:52cherished by your Creator Jesus loved
  398. 15:55you and gave himself for you
  399. 15:57here's your life go for it and be wise
  400. 16:00make the most of it it's just very
  401. 16:03practical you couldn't get here and
  402. 16:05there's this connection between being
  403. 16:07wise and just making wise decisions with
  404. 16:10my life and God's commitment to be
  405. 16:12personally present with me so let's keep
  406. 16:14on going so that's the first one don't
  407. 16:16be unwise of you wise make the most of
  408. 16:18every opportunity look at the next pair
  409. 16:21he says so don't be foolish but rather
  410. 16:25understand what the Lord's will is so if
  411. 16:29I'm wise it means I'm cultivating this
  412. 16:32understanding that in any given day I
  413. 16:33can make decisions that are more in line
  414. 16:36or less in line with God's will and this
  415. 16:38is one that really throws a lot of SRI
  416. 16:40loop I think and because many of us have
  417. 16:44a conception of God's will as if it's
  418. 16:46like some secret hidden purpose that you
  419. 16:48need to figure out for your life
  420. 16:50something you know and so is that God's
  421. 16:52will that I take this job or that I look
  422. 16:55should I try to get married should ask
  423. 16:56her out do I want to you know this is it
  424. 16:58God's will and I think many of us the
  425. 17:00way we talk about it in my hem God's
  426. 17:02will am I going against God's will we
  427. 17:04think of God's will as if it's like some
  428. 17:06hit like it's like a point on a map and
  429. 17:08I need to find out where the point is
  430. 17:10and then figure out how I'm supposed to
  431. 17:12get there and that's not how the Bible
  432. 17:14talks about God's well Paul himself he
  433. 17:18talks about God's will sometimes to talk
  434. 17:20about the parameters the God has set in
  435. 17:23place for our new life as new kinds of
  436. 17:25humans in Jesus and so he says for
  437. 17:28example sexual integrity sexual purity
  438. 17:31having sex with someone that I'm not in
  439. 17:33a marriage covenant with that is just
  440. 17:35never God's will for session Latinas
  441. 17:38chapter 4 this is God's will for your
  442. 17:40purity with regard to sex
  443. 17:42this just never God's will and so that's
  444. 17:45okay that's where the pressure is there
  445. 17:46that's a way to ruin my life
  446. 17:47real quick and start having sex with
  447. 17:49someone I'm not married to so that's one
  448. 17:52way you can refer to God's will most of
  449. 17:54the times that Paul and and the other
  450. 17:56biblical authors referred to God's will
  451. 17:58it has to do with discerning what's
  452. 18:00pleasing to God
  453. 18:02so for example my little son Roman you
  454. 18:05know we've blocked off the door there
  455. 18:08and the three cupboards now he has the
  456. 18:11whole house available to him what I'm
  457. 18:13not going to do is like when he has a
  458. 18:15free afternoon it's like a day off for
  459. 18:16me and I'm home and and so he's got the
  460. 18:19whole afternoon I'm not liking hover you
  461. 18:21know and in the time of his freedom be
  462. 18:23like play with a play with your trucks
  463. 18:24now okay now it's time to stop that now
  464. 18:26we're going to build a tower now Brahmin
  465. 18:28we're going to play with your teddy bear
  466. 18:29like that's obnoxious that's better so
  467. 18:31I'm not going to do that he's free so
  468. 18:33just do whatever and all of those would
  469. 18:36be my will which is that he flourish as
  470. 18:38a little boy and be creative and have
  471. 18:40fun
  472. 18:40it will never be quite well for example
  473. 18:43that he pushes the stool up to the
  474. 18:45kitchen sink and throws silverware in
  475. 18:47the garbage disposal that will never be
  476. 18:49my well even though he really thinks
  477. 18:51that is cool you think that's cool so
  478. 18:54there's another parameter we had to make
  479. 18:55around the garbage disposal but so yes
  480. 18:59you know I'm saying here all kinds of
  481. 19:01things could be God's will and in many
  482. 19:03passages in Paul Paul talks about the
  483. 19:06renewal of your minds in Romans chapter
  484. 19:0812 and he says when a Christians mind is
  485. 19:10renewed when your new identity in the
  486. 19:13gospel he says you will be able to
  487. 19:15cultivate the skill of discerning what
  488. 19:18God's will is he says is good pleasing
  489. 19:21and perfect will it just it's just how
  490. 19:24it's gaining the intuition now some of
  491. 19:27us might be easier said than done
  492. 19:29you know so I guess I'm supposed to be
  493. 19:31wise and I'm supposed to do what's
  494. 19:33pleasing to God okay so how how does
  495. 19:37that actually work and that's what the
  496. 19:38third element of the contrast is and
  497. 19:41this is where where I want to focus so
  498. 19:44Paul talks this is the third contrast
  499. 19:46verse 18 he says don't get drunk with
  500. 19:48wine which leads to debauchery instead
  501. 19:53be filled with the spirit okay now
  502. 19:55there's a number as a number of things
  503. 19:56one is about debauchery debauchery I've
  504. 19:59never I never say the word so I actually
  505. 20:01don't even know how to pronounce it
  506. 20:02so so debauchery so that whatever I
  507. 20:06don't know where the word came from an
  508. 20:07English none of us use it anymore the
  509. 20:08word that Paul uses this just means
  510. 20:10without restraint without any boundaries
  511. 20:13without any parameters and
  512. 20:16so some people have thought at this
  513. 20:18point that actually Paul is making a
  514. 20:20comparison don't get drunk with wine
  515. 20:22rather get hammered in the spirit and so
  516. 20:25I'm and there's large traditions in
  517. 20:28which the idea is that if I'm a spirit
  518. 20:32influenced human or spirit filled human
  519. 20:34it will lead to behavior that might be
  520. 20:36similar to but just is not actually
  521. 20:38induced by alcohol is induced by the
  522. 20:40spirit but it still very bizarre strange
  523. 20:42behavior and so this is one of those
  524. 20:44points again god bless Christianity huge
  525. 20:47tent family lots of different kinds of
  526. 20:49people but I do think that's one of the
  527. 20:50places where Paul would be like wow wow
  528. 20:53it didn't see that one didn't see a
  529. 20:55misunderstanding of what I was trying to
  530. 20:56say so clearly it's a contrast don't be
  531. 20:59unwise be wise don't be foolish
  532. 21:03understand what the Lord's will is their
  533. 21:05contrast right don't get drunk that's a
  534. 21:08whole kind of behavior that we'll talk
  535. 21:10about in a second be filled with a
  536. 21:11spirit that's a completely different
  537. 21:13kind of behavior the only similarity
  538. 21:15between the two is that we're talking
  539. 21:17about some kind of outside influence now
  540. 21:19you can be wise and unwise of your own
  541. 21:21accord but to get drunk or to be
  542. 21:24influenced by the spirit means there's
  543. 21:26something outside yourself that's
  544. 21:28influencing you that's the commonality
  545. 21:32here and so he uses yes this image here
  546. 21:35of not getting drunk with wine and all
  547. 21:37of a sudden the idea of making the most
  548. 21:39being totally on point discerning making
  549. 21:41good decisions discerning whether this
  550. 21:44decision what I'm doing with my day if
  551. 21:46that's going to be something that's
  552. 21:47pleasing to the Lord that involves like
  553. 21:49you beginning to think about your lives
  554. 21:51and one way that you cannot think about
  555. 21:53your life is to get drunk right and that
  556. 21:56in fact is one of the primary reasons
  557. 21:58why many people drink regularly is
  558. 22:00because they thinking about their life
  559. 22:02is too painful and so Paul in this new
  560. 22:05humanity he's laying another parameter
  561. 22:07here in this new humanity there are all
  562. 22:09kinds of influences you want to avoid
  563. 22:12especially influences that will in any
  564. 22:15way impair you from being able to make
  565. 22:17good decisions in the moment and
  566. 22:19discerning what God's what God's will is
  567. 22:22now there's this who go alcohol and
  568. 22:26Christianity that's not controversial at
  569. 22:28all is it right
  570. 22:29so I have three minutes to talk about it
  571. 22:31so what so here's what's happening here
  572. 22:34you you will not find a prohibition
  573. 22:37anywhere in the Bible that says that you
  574. 22:39drinking is a sin or consumption of
  575. 22:41alcohol is is a sin in some way you guys
  576. 22:44with me on that one
  577. 22:45so actually I should tell you with me
  578. 22:47that is the case you will not find that
  579. 22:49verse in the Bible what you will find is
  580. 22:51the exact opposite so Psalm 104 it for
  581. 22:54example talks about celebrating the gift
  582. 22:57of human family being able to cultivate
  583. 23:00the harvest out of the ground and being
  584. 23:02able to enjoy oil and wine which
  585. 23:04gladdens the heart have meant Psalm 104
  586. 23:06verse 15 and Jesus when he was
  587. 23:08celebrating the creation of this new
  588. 23:09family at the wedding in Cana he turns
  589. 23:12the water into not grape juice this is a
  590. 23:16wine okay so the Bible talks about when
  591. 23:19it does talk about alcohol it talks
  592. 23:20about its potential to be something
  593. 23:23beautiful and always connected to
  594. 23:24celebration of good things and lies but
  595. 23:27there are just as many passages that
  596. 23:30while they don't prohibit drinking they
  597. 23:32absolutely warn about the abuses of
  598. 23:35alcohol this is one of them proverbs
  599. 23:38chapter 31 is another really poignant
  600. 23:40profound passage and to me there's no
  601. 23:43there's no coincidence that Paul is
  602. 23:46talking about alcohol in the context of
  603. 23:48being wise or being foolish alcohol is
  604. 23:51one of those things that you have to be
  605. 23:53very wise with isn't it because for some
  606. 23:57people enjoying a bottle of wine at
  607. 24:00dinner with friends going out for a
  608. 24:01drink is actually a way of celebrating
  609. 24:03their friendships is celebrating that
  610. 24:05manhattan's when they're done well
  611. 24:06tastes really really good it's so you
  612. 24:08know what I mean like the craft beer
  613. 24:10it's part of the culture of Portland
  614. 24:11right support the local economy that
  615. 24:14kind of thing you know it's great it's a
  616. 24:16way to enjoy the culture of our city and
  617. 24:18for some people the same exact behavior
  618. 24:20might be their way of just thanking
  619. 24:22Jesus for good taste and friendship here
  620. 24:24in Portland and for another Christian
  621. 24:26the same exact behavior might be utterly
  622. 24:28foolish utterly foolish and destructive
  623. 24:32because of that person's unique story
  624. 24:34because of alcoholism that runs in their
  625. 24:36family because they know that their
  626. 24:38temperament tends towards addictive
  627. 24:39kinds of behavior or because I know that
  628. 24:42I'm in a tough season in life
  629. 24:43and there's a temptation right here to
  630. 24:45have another nun a third and then
  631. 24:47another because I don't want to think
  632. 24:49about my life right now and that's
  633. 24:52exactly what Paul is focusing on this
  634. 24:55it's an outside influence but not just
  635. 24:58deaden it deadens your mind actually
  636. 25:00what what alcohol does is if you google
  637. 25:04I don't know why I'm smiling about this
  638. 25:05but well actually you see in a second so
  639. 25:07if you uh if you google alcohol and
  640. 25:10brain science which is just a really
  641. 25:13interesting experience if you do that
  642. 25:15what you'll find is Wikipedia pages they
  643. 25:17have all this summaries of research on
  644. 25:19how alcohol affects your brain and how
  645. 25:21about go affects your brain it affects a
  646. 25:23lot of things about your brain one of
  647. 25:24the main parts of your brain is called
  648. 25:26the prefrontal lobe now I had already
  649. 25:28known about the prefrontal lobe because
  650. 25:30I learned that on ago that it develops
  651. 25:32much more slowly in males than in
  652. 25:33females and your prefrontal lobe is the
  653. 25:36part of your brain that my son lacks
  654. 25:39right now and it's the ability to to be
  655. 25:43aware of and think through multiple
  656. 25:45sequences of consequences to your action
  657. 25:48so when he has his like big metal truck
  658. 25:51and he still wants to throw it at the
  659. 25:52window he's he's actually not thinking
  660. 25:55about what will happen to the window
  661. 25:56he's just like that's cool this right
  662. 25:58he's just thinking at this moment right
  663. 26:00here and what alcohol impairs is exactly
  664. 26:05the part of your brain that allows you
  665. 26:07to wisely think through the consequences
  666. 26:09of your decision right as this is not
  667. 26:12rocket science and we didn't need brain
  668. 26:14scans to tell us that getting drunk
  669. 26:16makes you stupid okay but it's really
  670. 26:18interesting because this all it's all
  671. 26:20fits together then pulse pulse point is
  672. 26:22that if I'm a Christian if I'm a new
  673. 26:24kind of human if Jesus has taken up
  674. 26:26residence in my life
  675. 26:28this whole freedom the whole freedom is
  676. 26:30opened up to me of becoming a new and
  677. 26:33different kind of person that's that's
  678. 26:35actually saying no to influences that
  679. 26:39are going to they're going to dehumanize
  680. 26:41me then make me less of the human that
  681. 26:43God is calling me to be and for some of
  682. 26:46us that might be alcohol and so Paul he
  683. 26:49doesn't say don't drink he says know who
  684. 26:51you are don't get drunk don't get drunk
  685. 26:55and if I had time I would just say a
  686. 26:58whole long aside here that I'll try and
  687. 26:59wrap into 30 seconds that will probably
  688. 27:01be 45 is that as your friendly
  689. 27:04neighborhood pastor and I know a ton of
  690. 27:06people around or hope I know a lot of
  691. 27:08you not really well but I do know a lot
  692. 27:10of you and I do know that there are a
  693. 27:13lot of people around to our hope that
  694. 27:14are celebrating their freedom in Christ
  695. 27:16because we're that's big part of who we
  696. 27:18are as door of Hope is centered on grace
  697. 27:21and avoiding legalism at all costs and
  698. 27:23there's a lot of people around door of
  699. 27:25hope that's just straight up drink too
  700. 27:27much and you know you know if you do you
  701. 27:30know who you are and so I just want to
  702. 27:33urge you as your pastor it's not the way
  703. 27:36forward and perhaps one of one of the
  704. 27:39most significant moments you could have
  705. 27:42in your spiritual journey would not be
  706. 27:44to get all legalist and be like no one's
  707. 27:46drinking and if you drink your sub
  708. 27:47Christian or something like this
  709. 27:48ridiculous right so but at least like
  710. 27:50maybe you need to take a break for a
  711. 27:52while maybe you need to just say you're
  712. 27:54not just out of out of deference to
  713. 27:57Jesus and wanting to have him be the
  714. 27:59primary influence in my life I'm just
  715. 28:01I'm going to call six months right here
  716. 28:03take a break I'm not going to hold
  717. 28:04anybody else to it but out of devotion
  718. 28:06to Jesus I need to do this to make sure
  719. 28:09I'm not being influenced by alcohol in
  720. 28:13an unhealthy way that is my minute and
  721. 28:15forty five aside to those of you who
  722. 28:17need who need to hear that and the flip
  723. 28:18side of don't get drunk then is be
  724. 28:21filled with the spirit and now there's a
  725. 28:23lot that can be said about this I'll
  726. 28:25just say a couple things the New
  727. 28:28Testament uses lent the language of the
  728. 28:29Spirit this image be filled with the
  729. 28:31spirit and it might be a very common
  730. 28:34phrase to most of us we have maybe even
  731. 28:35use it so many times we don't even know
  732. 28:37what I mean anymore so when when Paul
  733. 28:40talks about being filled by the spirit
  734. 28:42he's not saying you need to somehow get
  735. 28:45the spirit back into your life again
  736. 28:47because you've lost Jesus's presence
  737. 28:49with you the Spirit is the Bible the way
  738. 28:51of talking about Jesus and God's
  739. 28:53personal presence being directly with
  740. 28:56you within you and in our midst is
  741. 28:58Christian and what the New Testament
  742. 29:00talks about is that when people wake up
  743. 29:02to the story of Jesus when you hear the
  744. 29:04story of Jesus and when it clicks and
  745. 29:06they realize like holy cow Jesus is
  746. 29:09and what he did for me the Bible talks
  747. 29:11about that person making a conversion
  748. 29:14making a confession of faith in Jesus so
  749. 29:17that's a work of the Spirit that's
  750. 29:19Jesus's direct presence and the perking
  751. 29:23up to that and there's a new awareness
  752. 29:25and the new sensitivity and a new
  753. 29:29reality of the presence of Jesus in my
  754. 29:31life New Testament uses words like
  755. 29:33baptism like being immersed in the
  756. 29:35presence of Jesus or even look just
  757. 29:37quickly turn across the page to chapter
  758. 29:394 look at chapter 4 verse 30 here's
  759. 29:46another word Paul uses to talk about
  760. 29:47this Paul says don't grieve the Holy
  761. 29:49Spirit of God with whom you were what
  762. 29:52what does he say here not baptize he
  763. 29:55says with whom you were sealed for the
  764. 29:57day of redemption
  765. 29:59so if I've made a profession of faith in
  766. 30:01Jesus if I'm making her attempt to just
  767. 30:04grab on to him and trust and faith and
  768. 30:06given my devotion to him so if that was
  769. 30:09a three-month process if that was a
  770. 30:10year-long process is that was a moment
  771. 30:12or an evening whatever your conversion
  772. 30:15process looks like you were you were
  773. 30:17baptized immersed in the spirit or to
  774. 30:20use another metaphor it's as if God took
  775. 30:23a stance and he just said mine put mine
  776. 30:26marked and sealed and it's actually the
  777. 30:29presence of Jesus with you
  778. 30:31that is part of that seedling it's like
  779. 30:33your mark your stamped you can't do
  780. 30:35anything that you can't undo it
  781. 30:36you know you've got your number now from
  782. 30:39here on out right but what you can do
  783. 30:42you can't unbaptized and seal yourself
  784. 30:45but what you can do is grieve the
  785. 30:48presence of Jesus what you can do is
  786. 30:51what Paul says elsewhere is extinguish
  787. 30:54or put out the flame of the Spirit in
  788. 30:56your lives or to say it more positively
  789. 30:59what he is inviting us into is newer and
  790. 31:03newer experiences of having the presence
  791. 31:05of Jesus influence and fill up more and
  792. 31:09more and then refill and fill up more of
  793. 31:11my life and just when you thought like
  794. 31:13wow I'm actually getting some traction
  795. 31:15as a Christian have you discovered this
  796. 31:17whole other area of your life where he's
  797. 31:18not filling up any part at all and then
  798. 31:20you got to get you know what I'm saying
  799. 31:21here
  800. 31:22what'd he say be filled with the spirit
  801. 31:24now how does that work if it was simple
  802. 31:27we wouldn't have to talk about it but
  803. 31:30it's not simple and so I'm going to both
  804. 31:32close and then also just kind of share
  805. 31:36the the one way that this has made most
  806. 31:39sense to me over over the years and has
  807. 31:41to do I shared about my children i'ma
  808. 31:43share about my my marriage tread lightly
  809. 31:45here right so so I Tim Maki I am without
  810. 31:51a doubt I am the best version of myself
  811. 31:54as a human being when my wife is present
  812. 31:58in my life with without a doubt getting
  813. 32:01married her was the best possible thing
  814. 32:02I could have ever done believe me
  815. 32:04believe me and so when and I know this I
  816. 32:07know that I'm the best version of myself
  817. 32:08when she's in my life is because when
  818. 32:11she goes away she occasionally will take
  819. 32:13like the boys up to be with her parents
  820. 32:15a few hours away or something
  821. 32:16and when she's gone for more than a day
  822. 32:18I just revert back to these old ways and
  823. 32:23these old ways for me involve staying up
  824. 32:26way too late watching skateboard videos
  825. 32:27on Thrasher calm they involves eating
  826. 32:31way too much ramen or frozen pizza and I
  827. 32:34just becomes a disorganized I'm actually
  828. 32:36not that organized of a person I tend to
  829. 32:38procrastinate on things and and there
  830. 32:40you go and it's just like I just watch
  831. 32:42my life crumble but when I don't live
  832. 32:45with my wife there's something about her
  833. 32:47actual presence I love you sweetie
  834. 32:49wherever you are in the room in my life
  835. 32:50she makes me a better human being now
  836. 32:53here's what here it raises an
  837. 32:55interesting question then is so her
  838. 32:58presence in my life she just by her
  839. 33:01presence compels me inspires me to want
  840. 33:04to be more on point more responsible get
  841. 33:06better sleep patterns you might be more
  842. 33:08generous just better in every way
  843. 33:10and I know this is because that changes
  844. 33:12when she leaves so so because of her
  845. 33:15influence on my life I think back over
  846. 33:17the 12 years that we we've been married
  847. 33:19and I think of all of the ways that
  848. 33:21she's enhanced and made me grow as a
  849. 33:23human being now the interesting question
  850. 33:25is this is is that me is that me
  851. 33:29doing that and growing and changing as a
  852. 33:31human being is it me or is it her
  853. 33:36you guys get my question here in other
  854. 33:38words I know for a fact that I've grown
  855. 33:40and changed as a human is that just me
  856. 33:44making really good decisions and doing
  857. 33:46that or is it her and see that's the
  858. 33:50wrong question to ask because she has a
  859. 33:53high degree of influence on my life but
  860. 33:56I also allow her to have a high degree
  861. 33:58of influence in my life
  862. 34:00so sometimes she'll just like suggest
  863. 34:02things to me like why did you say that
  864. 34:04that way to that person yeah
  865. 34:06or you know like so or all the time
  866. 34:08she'll be even more force like what were
  867. 34:09you thinking when you were doing that
  868. 34:11are you you know are you see are you
  869. 34:12kidding me right now does that just
  870. 34:14happen you know so whatever whether it's
  871. 34:16really nice or maybe a little more
  872. 34:18aggressive whatever she has a degree of
  873. 34:21influence but at the end of the day who
  874. 34:23has to make the decision to come under
  875. 34:26the influence of her I do it's me I have
  876. 34:30to make the decisions that will be
  877. 34:33difficult that will be about setting new
  878. 34:35habits and new patterns of behavior but
  879. 34:37there's no way I would ever be motivated
  880. 34:40to make those decisions if she weren't
  881. 34:41in my life in the first place do you see
  882. 34:42where I'm going with this here that's
  883. 34:44what I think this is exactly what Paul
  884. 34:46means if it weren't for the presence of
  885. 34:48Jesus in your life speaking into your
  886. 34:50life you wouldn't care you wouldn't you
  887. 34:52would just be kind of be the human that
  888. 34:54you think is the right way to be a human
  889. 34:56being or you can open yourself up to
  890. 34:59this new person who's trying to speak
  891. 35:04into your life and whose presence will
  892. 35:06both convict and also speak new truths
  893. 35:10and point out ways like yep that's
  894. 35:12totally like outside the parameters
  895. 35:14that's just not wise that's just stupid
  896. 35:17you know like don't make that it's about
  897. 35:20opening myself up to this new relational
  898. 35:22presence and so look what he says here
  899. 35:25he says don't get drunk on wine which
  900. 35:28leads to debauchery but be filled with
  901. 35:31the spirit allow this new presence to so
  902. 35:34fill your life that you actually it's
  903. 35:36like having a new person in your lives
  904. 35:38and that might seem weird to us cos like
  905. 35:41well Jesus is invisible so like how does
  906. 35:44he talk to me yeah my god so Jessica
  907. 35:46she's just right there but like Jesus
  908. 35:48how is he
  909. 35:49and this is exactly what he goes on to
  910. 35:52say what does in the fruits of the
  911. 35:54spirit filled life one of which let's
  912. 35:56just keep going this finished reading
  913. 35:57passage he says speaking to one another
  914. 35:59with Psalms hymns and songs from the
  915. 36:03spirit sing and make music from your
  916. 36:06heart to the Lord
  917. 36:08the Book of Psalms was the songbook of
  918. 36:12the earliest Christians the Scriptures
  919. 36:15have always been the primary prayer book
  920. 36:18and songbook of both Jewish and
  921. 36:20Christian traditions and so it's
  922. 36:22precisely through the scriptures but
  923. 36:24also through each other that we allow
  924. 36:27Jesus to begin to have input into our
  925. 36:30lives and if specially you know that a
  926. 36:33community of Jesus is alive with the
  927. 36:35presence of Jesus and its myths when
  928. 36:37there's new poetry there's new music
  929. 36:39that when we sing we're actually
  930. 36:41teaching each other but we're also
  931. 36:43singing and giving thanks he goes on
  932. 36:45giving thanks to God the Father for
  933. 36:48everything in the name of Jesus worship
  934. 36:50is not just about singing songs it's
  935. 36:52about new poetry inspired by the
  936. 36:55scriptures where we're teaching each
  937. 36:56other and giving each other new language
  938. 36:58and ideas about what it means to be a
  939. 37:00Christian and then as we go throughout
  940. 37:02our day you're at 3:00 p.m. you had a
  941. 37:04hard morning at work and then all of a
  942. 37:06sudden is just the voice in your mind
  943. 37:07like do that what you said to that
  944. 37:09person lame lame and when you made that
  945. 37:12decision last night stupid stupid and
  946. 37:14you know and you go holy cow
  947. 37:17and and all of a sudden there's their
  948. 37:19scripture there's words from a song and
  949. 37:21then you go out for your weekly or
  950. 37:23bi-weekly you know a cup of coffee with
  951. 37:25your friend to read the Bible together
  952. 37:26pray for each other because it's part of
  953. 37:28what it means to be in a community and
  954. 37:29then you're like dang it from them to
  955. 37:31really and then all of a sudden you have
  956. 37:33this outside influence speaking into
  957. 37:34your life that's compelling you to
  958. 37:36change into Grau and then what it leads
  959. 37:39to in the last verse verse 21 is then
  960. 37:43the last fruit or the outcome of the
  961. 37:45Spirit in our lives is submitting to one
  962. 37:48another out of reverence for Christ it's
  963. 37:50actually that we allow the community and
  964. 37:53the scriptures to speak into my life and
  965. 37:55actually being open to submitting
  966. 37:58humbling myself like if left of my own
  967. 38:01devices I'm actually probably going to
  968. 38:02be pretty stew
  969. 38:03and make dumb decisions I need the input
  970. 38:06of others into my lives and that it
  971. 38:09seems to me is the picture that Paul is
  972. 38:11painting right here he lays out the
  973. 38:13parameters of what it means to be a new
  974. 38:16human he gives us this huge area of
  975. 38:18freedom and then he talks about
  976. 38:20influences becoming a new kind of human
  977. 38:23being wise learning how to discern what
  978. 38:26God's will is on any given day and how
  979. 38:29do you do that you become open to the
  980. 38:32influence of Jesus presence of Jesus and
  981. 38:34the Spirit in your life and you submit
  982. 38:36to it because that's the way that we're
  983. 38:39going to grow that might have been the
  984. 38:43shortest little sermonette I've given a
  985. 38:44door of hope period and I'm really proud
  986. 38:46of that so I'm going to close in prayer
  987. 38:50and I just what I want to do is just
  988. 38:53challenge you there's so many different
  989. 38:55angles that this could connect and and
  990. 38:57connect with our lives but I would just
  991. 38:59like just ask yourself the simple
  992. 39:01question are you even aware or are you
  993. 39:04open to the presence of Jesus
  994. 39:08influencing your lives what if it's some
  995. 39:10part of your life that you don't want to
  996. 39:13change or you don't think needs to be
  997. 39:15changed like what if the spirit being
  998. 39:17filled with the spirit it's going to
  999. 39:18mean going there are you open to that
1000. 39:21and that will tell you whether or not
1001. 39:24you will be open to being filled with
1002. 39:26the spirit or not let me close with a
  1003. 39:29word of Prayer
  1004. 39:37you
