- 0:00well we gather on this fourth Sunday of
- 0:03Lent leari Sunday you see by the rose
- 0:07vestment but I have a $50 Euro who here
- 0:13if I asked
- 0:15you who wants this 50 EUR I imagine all
- 0:20of your hands would go
- 0:22up but let's say that I crumpled this
- 0:2650 mashed it into a ball and I asked you
- 0:29again who want wants it again I imagine
- 0:33all of your hands would go up let's say
- 0:36that I throw it down on the floor and I
- 0:39crumpled it I I I step on it I suly
- 0:44it again I ask you who wants this
- 0:49€50 despite being a deformed sullied
- 0:54again I think that all of you would
- 0:56raise your hands that you would want it
- 0:59we still see the worth of this 50
- 1:03euros that's a little example I think
- 1:05that the example goes a long way and
- 1:08this example helps us to understand our
- 1:11readings
- 1:12today we hear from the second book of
- 1:15Chronicles we don't read from Chronicles
- 1:18often but that book is basically a
- 1:20summary of the history of God's people
- 1:23from Genesis all the way to
- 1:26Exodus and it's about the 6th Century
- 1:29before Christ
- 1:30Christ the part we read in Chronicles
- 1:33today is about one of the most
- 1:36catastrophic events in history in the
- 1:39history of Israel it's about the
- 1:41Babylonian
- 1:43exile throughout the centuries leading
- 1:46up to that God's people had turned away
- 1:48from him slowly at first but then as the
- 1:52reading tells us they added infidelity
- 1:56to
- 1:57infidelity practiced things that were an
- 2:00Abomination to God and they polluted
- 2:03God's temple with their
- 2:05idolatry they basically kicked God out
- 2:09and as a result God allowed the kingdom
- 2:12of Babylon to invade and Conquer
- 2:16Israel the Babylonians destroyed
- 2:18Jerusalem tore down the Great temple of
- 2:21God that Solomon had built and carried
- 2:23off the people into Exile back into
- 2:26Babylon they in Babylon far away from
- 2:29their whole land Homeland the people
- 2:31came to their senses and realized that
- 2:34they had sinned and that they had
- 2:36strayed away from the faith and what did
- 2:39they do they
- 2:40repented and we hear a snippet of their
- 2:43lament in the psalm today the psalm says
- 2:46by the Rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
- 2:49when we remembered
- 2:51Zion but even though they had abandoned
- 2:53God God would not abandon them he still
- 2:57loved them even though they had
- 2:59forgotten the Commandments even though
- 3:01they had turned their backs on him and
- 3:03turned towards false gods even though
- 3:06they had become deformed and sullied by
- 3:09their sins God still loved
- 3:12them kind of like the 50e old God still
- 3:16wanted them and still saw their
- 3:19worth the rest of this reading from
- 3:21Chronicles is about how God brought them
- 3:23back from Exile how he reestablishes
- 3:26them and how he makes them his people
- 3:29once again in the Holy Land This reading
- 3:32is a testament not to the faith of the
- 3:35people remember they had abandoned their
- 3:37faith but to the graciousness and mercy
- 3:40of God of who God
- 3:43is that leads us to the gospel into the
- 3:46arguably the most popular most quoted
- 3:49Bible
- 3:50verse you see athletes put it underneath
- 3:53their eyes you see people put it tattoo
- 3:55it on their bodies John
- 3:583:16 and in a lot of ways this verse
- 4:01sums up the entirety of the Christian
- 4:03proclamation of the good
- 4:05news and it tells us why God did what he
- 4:09did for God so loved the world he gave
- 4:11us his only son so that everyone who
- 4:13believed in him might not perish but
- 4:15might have eternal life you see that
- 4:19sums up everything absolutely everything
- 4:21about our faith that's why we see John
- 4:243:16 quoted so
- 4:26often that verse and this Gospel reading
- 4:29is coupled with that first reading from
- 4:31Chronicles for the gospel 2 is about a
- 4:35testament of God's graciousness of God's
- 4:38mercy towards
- 4:39us that one verse describes so many
- 4:43things it describes who Jesus is he's is
- 4:45the Son of God it tells us why he came
- 4:49because the father gave him to us it
- 4:53also answers why the father gave him to
- 4:55us why did he give it to us so that we
- 4:57would not perish in our sins so that we
- 5:00might be saved and it reveals why the
- 5:03father did not want us to perish in our
- 5:05sins why because he loved us even though
- 5:09we were deformed even though we were
- 5:11sullied by our by our sins he desired us
- 5:14to share eternal life with him that's
- 5:16the promise that God makes to us you
- 5:18will be with me for all
- 5:21eternity the same graciousness and mercy
- 5:23of God towards the Israelites that is
- 5:26praised in the book of Chronicles is now
- 5:28glorious proclaimed to the world through
- 5:31the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it's
- 5:33summed up in that little verse of
- 5:363:16 and I have to say that is the core
- 5:39of the Gospel
- 5:40message one thing that the season of
- 5:43Lent is designed to do is to help us to
- 5:46remember why we believe in the first
- 5:48place to remember who we
- 5:51are and with mature Faith begin to
- 5:54believe in a deeper way with a profound
- 5:58Faith with a deeper Rel relationship
- 6:00with our Lord to renew and to reaffirm
- 6:03our
- 6:04beliefs we do that by remembering once
- 6:06more that core Proclamation and the
- 6:09church and the church proclaims it a new
- 6:11today so that those who are away from
- 6:13the Lord may hear and return back to
- 6:17him and that those who have not yet the
- 6:20have heard the faith might by their own
- 6:23repentance begin to believe in him with
- 6:27confidence maybe the little the little
- 6:30analogy that I gave you about the 50
- 6:33euros may help us to begin to understand
- 6:35the graciousness and mercy of God and
- 6:39this gospel message today which is very
- 6:41simple but very
- 6:43powerful that message is this let not
- 6:47the sinner despair because of his plight
- 6:50but come to the Lord though may be
- 6:52deformed and soled by their sins God
- 6:55still loves you and God still sees your
- 6:58value
- 7:00so much so that he gives us his son so
- 7:02that we will not perish so my brothers
- 7:05and sisters on this fourth Sunday of
- 7:06Lent turn to him believe in him so that
- 7:10you may have eternal life for you have
- 7:14worth
- 7:17amen
