- 0:15Welcome back everyone to Unreal Engine 5
- 0:17beginner's guide to building an
- 0:18environment. In the last lesson, we left
- 0:20it off by familiarizing ourselves with
- 0:23the overall software and its viewport.
- 0:26And now we're actually going to begin
- 0:27working on the project itself. So before
- 0:30we do that, I reckon that instead of
- 0:32using this entire level, which already
- 0:34has a template objects within it, it
- 0:37might be easier to start off by getting
- 0:39ourselves a brand new template with no
- 0:42assets within it. So we're going to go
- 0:45onto the upper left corner. We're going
- 0:47to click on file and we're going to
- 0:49select new level and then we're going to
- 0:51make sure we select basic. Once we have
- 0:54that, we're going to click create and
- 0:56get ourselves an entire new level with
- 0:58no template or any of the additional
- 1:01assets. It's just a nice sky that
- 1:04already has a default lighting and a
- 1:06simple square for us to work on. So,
- 1:09right now, we're going to be working on
- 1:11creating a simple gray box for our
- 1:14environment. And we're going to do that
- 1:17by getting ourselves a primitive shape
- 1:19to work with. And then we're just going
- 1:21to use basic objects and build it up
- 1:24just to get an overall idea of what
- 1:26we're going to be working with. So to
- 1:28start off, we're going to click on the
- 1:30plus icon within the upper left corner
- 1:33and we're going to hover over the shapes
- 1:36and we're going to get ourselves a cube.
- 1:38By clicking on it, we're going to get
- 1:40ourselves a cube right in the middle of
- 1:43our viewport. Then if we want, we can
- 1:46start it off by getting ourselves the
- 1:47cube within the center of the world. All
- 1:50we're going to do is within the bottom
- 1:51right corner within the details tab,
- 1:53we're going to go onto the
- 1:55transformations tab, which is located at
- 1:58the very top of our details tab, and
- 2:00we're going to reset the location to
- 2:03this default 0000 values. We can do so
- 2:06by clicking on reset this property to
- 2:08its default value button over here. And
- 2:12once we do that, we're going to get
- 2:13ourselves an object right in the middle
- 2:15of our world. Now, if we want our camera
- 2:18to be positioned to the center of that
- 2:20object, we can click F and it'll
- 2:23automatically snap our camera with our
- 2:26selection to be positioned within the
- 2:29center of our camera. So, now that we
- 2:31have it like so, we're going to start
- 2:34off by getting some elevation. So, we're
- 2:36going to create ourselves an environment
- 2:38in which we'll have a nice hut at the
- 2:41top and then we'll also have a water
- 2:44area with a bridge hanging from it. So,
- 2:47what we're going to do in order for us
- 2:49to set that up, we're going to get
- 2:51ourselves an elevation using those
- 2:53cubes. And firstly, actually, let's go
- 2:55ahead and make this entire cube a little
- 2:57bit larger. We can click R to go into
- 3:01the scale mode. And then in the gizmo
- 3:04between the red and the green gizmo
- 3:07sections, there is a middle section over
- 3:10here. And if we were to click and hold,
- 3:12we can upscale our entire cube, which
- 3:14will only do it in the X and Y values.
- 3:18This way, we're basically stretching our
- 3:20entire cube in the way that wouldn't
- 3:22affect the Z values. And we're able to
- 3:25do this. we get a nice foundation that
- 3:27although we have already set up a
- 3:29foundation, we're going to set up our
- 3:31own primitive shapes and just have it
- 3:33kind of nicely positioned within our
- 3:35world. So reckon we can just continue
- 3:38scaling this up until we get a value of
- 3:41let's say we can have a value of six.
- 3:43And if we were to press play, we can see
- 3:45the type of a scale we have. Actually,
- 3:47let's go ahead and upscale this even
- 3:49more up to a value of 10. I think that's
- 3:53going to do much better for us. So,
- 3:56there you go. We're going to have this
- 3:58kind of a small platform to work with.
- 4:01Then, after we have this, we're going to
- 4:02click W to go into our move gizmo tool,
- 4:06and we're going to hold Alt and move our
- 4:10cube sideways, which will duplicate it.
- 4:12Now, to redo it, I'll just click Ctrl Z
- 4:15to undo my previous action, and then
- 4:18I'll do it again. So, while holding alt,
- 4:20I'm actually just going to uh click and
- 4:23drag onto this green arrow over here and
- 4:25just move it sideways like so. And if
- 4:28you notice, I have some snapping turned
- 4:31on. So, I'm using the upper right corner
- 4:33for the snapping. And all of these are
- 4:36turned on with the default settings on.
- 4:39And later on when when we will want to
- 4:41turn them off, we'll be able to do just
- 4:42that. But for now, it'll help us to kind
- 4:44of position all of our assets properly
- 4:46and kind of help us to work within a
- 4:49restricted space. This speed up our
- 4:51overall process for uh setting up our
- 4:54gray box. So, now that we have two
- 4:56cubes, we're going to position another
- 4:58cube slightly higher than the previous
- 5:01one. And we're actually going to click
- 5:02R. And this time, I think we can just
- 5:05extend it in the Z value, which will
- 5:07make this a bit higher, like so. and
- 5:10we're going to position it just to the
- 5:13side of our other cube. Just like that.
- 5:15So, it doesn't have to be perfect. We're
- 5:17just using them as a base. And so, this
- 5:19way we're going to have some elevation.
- 5:21So, now what we're going to do is we're
- 5:23going to set up location for where we
- 5:25want our objects to go. And I think we
- 5:27can start off by clicking on the plus,
- 5:31getting ourselves a new cube. Just going
- 5:33to create a new one. And this way, we
- 5:36won't have to worry too much about
- 5:38scaling. And now we're just going to
- 5:40squish it down a little bit and use the
- 5:42X scaling just to kind of stretch it out
- 5:44to the side. And we'll start off by
- 5:47getting ourselves kind of a basic shape
- 5:49for the bridge. I think that's the
- 5:51nicest way to start it off. So I'm
- 5:54thinking is we'll probably want to have
- 5:56the bridge to be touching the upper
- 5:59section of this overall platform and
- 6:02we'll want it to be seted up just right
- 6:05to the side of this area over here. Now,
- 6:08by default, both of the materials are
- 6:10going to be white. So, it's going to be
- 6:12somewhat hard to see. So, what I
- 6:14recommend doing is if we go to the
- 6:16details tab, we can scroll down a little
- 6:18bit to the material section. And by
- 6:21clicking on this tab over here, we open
- 6:23up all the default Unreal Engine
- 6:25materials that it has. Now, if we were
- 6:28to scroll through this entire list,
- 6:31we'll get ourselves basic shape material
- 6:33instance. And this one by default is
- 6:36going to give us a really nice base for
- 6:38the gray type of material. So we can
- 6:40just work with these two kind of colors
- 6:42to get a nice contrast and just kind of
- 6:44set up the overall shape that we want
- 6:46our structure to be set up in. And right
- 6:50now we're just going to use them to get
- 6:52ourselves a real nice uh kind of a gray
- 6:55box. And we're just going to extend this
- 6:58just a little bit more. I'm going to go
- 7:00right over this area and click play just
- 7:03to see how my character is going to look
- 7:05like in regards to the overall scale. I
- 7:08think this is quite nice. But we
- 7:10probably want it to be extended just a
- 7:13little bit more. Like so. And actually,
- 7:16not only that, we should probably have
- 7:19some bit of a bridge to be going
- 7:20sideways as well to go deeper into the
- 7:23waters where we'll have our water body.
- 7:26So, what we're going to do is we're
- 7:28going to hold Alt and we're going to
- 7:30drag it outside like so to make a
- 7:32duplicate out of this asset. Then, we're
- 7:34going to position it sideways like so.
- 7:36Because we have a snapping tool on, it's
- 7:38going to allow us to rotate it by 90°
- 7:41and we'll get it perpendicular to the
- 7:44other asset. So, now we have it like so.
- 7:46I think we can raise it up just a little
- 7:48bit like so and drag it to the side.
- 7:52Now, by the looks of it, this might be a
- 7:53little bit too long. So, what I'm going
- 7:55to do is I'm going to click R and squish
- 7:57this bridge just a little bit down like
- 7:59so and put it to the side just like
- 8:01that. Now, as for the house, I'm
- 8:04actually going to uh yeah, I'm going to
- 8:07duplicate the same bridge area that I
- 8:10had. And I'm going to position it right
- 8:13on top of this area like so. And I'm
- 8:16going to stretch it out. And actually,
- 8:18I'm just going to make it into this sort
- 8:20of a cube like so.
- 8:22And if the platform that we're having is
- 8:24not big enough, we can always make it
- 8:26larger. So I'm actually going to grab
- 8:29both of these platforms like so. Click R
- 8:31and stretch them out to the side like
- 8:33so. So this way we'll have a better
- 8:35understanding on how our house is going
- 8:38to look like within this environment. So
- 8:41right now we have a couple of cubes set
- 8:43up and I'm thinking that maybe we're
- 8:46going to have this house a little bit
- 8:48more to the side like so. And the way
- 8:51I'm thinking to have our structure is I
- 8:54want to have a little bit of a house
- 8:56extended to the side. And then I want to
- 9:00have some area for where we we'll have
- 9:03our rooftop just as an outside area for
- 9:06our location for our structure with like
- 9:09a nice bench and a fireplace setup. And
- 9:12then we'll have another location for a
- 9:17house structure just to cover up the
- 9:18side. So, we're going to actually
- 9:20duplicate this uh cube and set it up in
- 9:23the way that's going to be. Actually,
- 9:25let's go ahead and rotate it like so.
- 9:28And we're going to set it up to be
- 9:30sideways and position it just like that.
- 9:33So, now with this on, we can kind of
- 9:36visualize how it's going to look like.
- 9:38And I'm think yeah, let's go ahead and
- 9:40speed up the process a little bit and uh
- 9:43get some more assets within this area.
- 9:45So I think firstly I just want to kind
- 9:47of position this bridge a little bit
- 9:49more to the front. I want the end bit to
- 9:51be going backwards but I don't want it
- 9:53to be completely to the side because we
- 9:56want to break up the entire silhouette
- 9:58of our environment. And right now we're
- 10:00just playing around with the shapes
- 10:02trying to get overall design the way we
- 10:04want it to be and how it's going to be
- 10:06set up within our environment. And
- 10:08actually I just wanted to bring it just
- 10:09a little bit back. And I think we might
- 10:11have some like foliage sitting in the
- 10:13front and that will help us to kind of
- 10:14break apart this empty wall over here.
- 10:17And I think we might have some foliage
- 10:19over here in this distance as well. And
- 10:21actually, yeah, I think we can just
- 10:23bring this up just a little bit more
- 10:24because I want to have a type of a door
- 10:28here as an entrance. And this will help
- 10:31us to kind of see how our entire
- 10:34building is going to look like. So, I'm
- 10:36thinking that this might look quite all
- 10:38right. We might want to extend this by a
- 10:40little bit like so. We don't want to
- 10:43overdo it. We just want it to have a
- 10:45kind of a casual structure like so. And
- 10:47now what we can do is we can just make
- 10:49use out of the rest of the assets. And
- 10:51actually I'm just going to duplicate
- 10:53this bridge and make it into a smaller
- 10:58cube like so. Or even I'm just going to
- 11:01scroll up within the transformations tab
- 11:03within the details panel. And I'd like
- 11:06us to reset the scale transformation. So
- 11:09by clicking on this reset icon over
- 11:10here, we're just going to get ourselves
- 11:11a default cube with which if we were to
- 11:15just scale it like this, we'll get be
- 11:17able to get a nice sort of a support for
- 11:20our entire bridge. Like so. I think we
- 11:24can just lower this down like this and
- 11:26get a nice kind of a support. We don't
- 11:28have to worry about it going inside of
- 11:30the floor too much. we just have to
- 11:32focus on a overall kind of a shape of
- 11:35our setup for the environment. So the
- 11:38reason we do our gray boxes usually is
- 11:41to get an overall kind of a flow of how
- 11:43we want our entire environment to be
- 11:45structured. And this way it'll help us
- 11:48to focus on setting up our other assets
- 11:53later on and we wouldn't have to worry
- 11:54about it too much on how the overall
- 11:57aesthetic would be coming up together.
- 11:59So right now we're just playing around
- 12:01with the shapes, getting the overall
- 12:03design set up, and this will just help
- 12:06us to ease off our process later on. So
- 12:09right now, we're just playing around
- 12:11with the shapes like so. And I think we
- 12:13can have something like this. We don't
- 12:15want to have too many of these poles in
- 12:18here, but I definitely think we need to
- 12:21have some of them in this area over
- 12:24here. One on one end and one on the
- 12:26other. And then we can grab both of them
- 12:28while holding shift and we're actually
- 12:32sorry I'm just going to click Ctrl Z to
- 12:33undo my selection. Then I'm going to
- 12:35hold alt and drag it out like so to make
- 12:38a duplicate. And actually this one isn't
- 12:40touching because obviously it's a little
- 12:42bit higher. So we're just going to raise
- 12:44it up a little bit. And I'm just going
- 12:46to duplicate this like so. And see how
- 12:49this looks like from a distance. Yeah, I
- 12:51think this is just enough. We don't need
- 12:53to overdo it too much. You might want to
- 12:56have the pattern to be a bit more
- 12:58centered like so. So the g uh the gaps
- 13:00would be more or less spaced out nicely
- 13:04in between one another. I think that's
- 13:05going to look just quite nice. Okay. So
- 13:09now to break off the solar for this
- 13:11area, we're going to get ourselves
- 13:14another cube. Actually, we're just going
- 13:15to duplicate the area from this bridge
- 13:19and we're going to set it up as a nice
- 13:22kind of a roof that we're going to be
- 13:24using.
- 13:27Like so.
- 13:29Now, by default, the Unreal Engine
- 13:31doesn't have a lot of uh choices for the
- 13:33gray boxing, and since it is a game
- 13:37engine, it won't have a lot of modeling
- 13:39functionality. We can increase that
- 13:41though by using a plugin for modeling
- 13:44toolkit. But I'm going to show you how
- 13:47to enable that in our next lesson. And
- 13:50we're going to make use out of more
- 13:53interesting shapes to build ourselves a
- 13:55roof for this area. And then we're just
- 13:56going to play around with the basics of
- 13:58a modeling toolkit. So, thank you so
- 14:00much for watching and I'll see you in a
- 14:02bit.
