  1. 0:02Our presentation is before the burnout,
  2. 0:05preparing future teachers for the field.
  3. 0:14Picture this. Period four, grade nine.
  4. 0:1832 14-year-olds in my classroom. I'm
  5. 0:21sitting at my desk helping a student
  6. 0:23when suddenly the room erupts. There's a
  7. 0:25huge crash and I look up to see one
  8. 0:27student in full rage. He's just thrown a
  9. 0:31chair and hurt another student.
  10. 0:33Seemed to come out of nowhere. The room
  11. 0:35fills with fear. No one knows what to
  12. 0:37do. Then he and the injured student are
  13. 0:40taken away.
  14. 0:42Things like this are happening in
  15. 0:44schools across the country all of the
  16. 0:46time.
  17. 0:47But what happens after the event events?
  18. 0:50What happens to the kid who threw the
  19. 0:51chair? The one who got injured? The 30
  20. 0:54others who watched it happen?
  21. 0:56What happens next day? Are we all just
  22. 0:58expected to come back and learn?
  23. 1:01Well, after all is said and done, I was
  24. 1:04expected to just go back to teaching.
  25. 1:07But I was overwhelmed. We were
  26. 1:10overwhelmed.
  27. 1:12Despite my experience, the system hadn't
  28. 1:14prepared me for this reality.
  29. 1:17The one where teachers are expected to
  30. 1:19stay calm and collected all of the time.
  31. 1:23Even though we're just humans, too.
  32. 1:26And this gap in our training is most
  33. 1:28noticeable in these emotional intense
  34. 1:30moments when teachers are expected to
  35. 1:33help students manage their feelings
  36. 1:36while experiencing our own.
  37. 1:38And when we aren't prepared for these
  38. 1:39realities, the cost shows up in
  39. 1:42classrooms.
  40. 1:45It's paid in student learning, but it's
  41. 1:47also paid by passionate teachers.
  42. 1:50Teachers like me who leave the classroom
  43. 1:52because we weren't given the tools to
  44. 1:54survive it.
  45. 1:56This moment was traumatic for students,
  46. 1:59and even though no one thought to ask,
  47. 2:01it was also traumatic for me.
  48. 2:04Teachers can do hard things,
  49. 2:07but they deserve to be prepared for
  50. 2:09those things.
  51. 2:11For my research, I have created and am
  52. 2:13facilitating a three-part workshop
  53. 2:15series for future teachers, offered
  54. 2:17before and after their first major
  55. 2:19practicum.
  56. 2:21Grounded in trauma-informed teaching, an
  57. 2:24approach that values safety and care,
  58. 2:26these workshops help future teachers
  59. 2:28recognize how trauma, both theirs and
  60. 2:31their students, shapes behavior and what
  61. 2:34happens next in the classroom.
  62. 2:37We also focus on how trauma shows up in
  63. 2:39the small moments of everyday classroom
  64. 2:41life,
  65. 2:42and how teachers can care for their
  66. 2:43students and themselves
  67. 2:46while building capacity to stay in this
  68. 2:48profession.
  69. 2:50To understand the impact of this work,
  70. 2:53my research captures the lived stories
  71. 2:55of these future teachers.
  72. 2:57Using surveys, written reflections, and
  73. 2:59interviews, I'm looking at how this
  74. 3:01learning shapes practicum experience and
  75. 3:04confidence.
  76. 3:05So, teacher preparation does more before
  77. 3:08the teachers are left on their own.
  78. 3:10If we want classrooms where real
  79. 3:13learning happens, and where teachers
  80. 3:15want to stay,
  81. 3:16they need to be prepared for the
  82. 3:17realities of this job.
  83. 3:20This isn't about asking teachers to be
  84. 3:22stronger. Preparing them better to do
  85. 3:24the hard things is how we care for
  86. 3:26everyone IN THE ROOM.
  87. 3:41THANK YOU SO MUCH, JACQUELINE.
