#377: How to install a crimp-on BNC connector to RG-8X coax cable — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00in this video we're going to take a look
- 0:02at how to install a crimp style BNC
- 0:04connector on some rg8 colax the same
- 0:07connector will fit a wide variety of
- 0:09different coax types that are all about
- 0:11the same dimensions of
- 0:13rg8x the items needed will be the
- 0:16connector of course the coax uh couple
- 0:19of pieces of heat shrink tubing I've got
- 0:21some 1/4 in and some 3/8 in here that
- 0:23we'll use uh pair of proper uh crimpers
- 0:27we'll talk about that in a moment uh a
- 0:29pair of cutters an exacto knife or maybe
- 0:31if you've got a coax trimming tool and
- 0:33then some heat source to uh to shrink
- 0:36the heat shrink tubing when we're all
- 0:37done now the first step is to slide the
- 0:40heat shrink tubing and the Crim sleeve
- 0:42on the coax before you get started next
- 0:45we'll prepare the end of the coax by
- 0:46trimming the outer insulation the braid
- 0:49and then the inner insulation to meet
- 0:51these Dimensions now keep in mind that
- 0:53these Dimensions really apply to this
- 0:56particular connector from this
- 0:57manufacturer here uh and supplier from
- 1:00Max gain systems uh always be sure to
- 1:02follow the instruction sheet for the
- 1:04connector manufacturer that you're
- 1:06buying the connectors from because the
- 1:08dimensions May differ because the
- 1:10connector designs May differ I typically
- 1:12start just by arbitrarily going back a
- 1:14little bit further than I need to and
- 1:17trimming the outer insulation here first
- 1:19and then working my way toward uh
- 1:21towards the end of the coax and then
- 1:22trim the final Center connector uh at
- 1:25the very end to me that makes it a
- 1:27little bit more logical sense to try to
- 1:28keep track of all the dimensions
- 1:30with the end of the coax prepared
- 1:32properly the next thing we want to do is
- 1:33attach the center pin the center pin can
- 1:36be attached either through crimping or
- 1:38through soldering soldering is generally
- 1:40more recommended that's what I'm going
- 1:41to do here apply some heat to the back
- 1:45side of the
- 1:46connector and put a little bit of solder
- 1:48through the visible wheat pole up here
- 1:51and doesn't take much once you see a
- 1:53drawing into the hole you're basically
- 1:55done now make sure that uh you don't
- 1:57have any excess solder on the outside
- 2:00body of the center pin here that might
- 2:01prevent you from inserting it properly
- 2:03into the body of the connector and also
- 2:05take a note there's a little bit of a
- 2:07groove right here and uh when you insert
- 2:09this center pin into the connector
- 2:11you'll actually hear a click when it
- 2:13gets inserted all the way so again that
- 2:16you got to make sure that's perfectly
- 2:17clean doesn't have any solder or flux
- 2:19left in it now you can uh kind of rotate
- 2:22around the uh center pin in the center
- 2:24insulation to spread out the shield so
- 2:26that it goes on the outside of the
- 2:27crimping surface here and insert the
- 2:30connector in place again you want you
- 2:33want to push firmly till you hear that
- 2:35click I typically like to push it down
- 2:37on the table this way so I can actually
- 2:38hear that click
- 2:40happen right next we take the crimping
- 2:42fural and slide it all the way up over
- 2:45the breed and completely cover it make
- 2:48sure you don't have any stray ends
- 2:50sticking out too far if you do you can
- 2:51trim them off and we get ready to crimp
- 2:54now when it comes to crimping the feral
- 2:56again you want to follow the
- 2:57instructions that you that come along
- 2:59with the connector and for this
- 3:00connector we actually want to use a255
- 3:03in HEX crimp tool and that's what we
- 3:06have here okay we'll insert the
- 3:09connector's feral into the crimping die
- 3:11here and just before we crimp down on it
- 3:13we'll make sure we're fully seated and
- 3:16we'll bear down on this and make the
- 3:19crimp that completes the installation of
- 3:21the connector I'm going to add a little
- 3:23bit of heat shrink tubing to seal off
- 3:25the end of the connector and act as a
- 3:27little bit of a strain relief on for the
- 3:30end of the connector here right the
- 3:32first step I put on here is a quarter
- 3:34inch heat shrink and I've got a little
- 3:36uh butane uh soldering iron here with a
- 3:40blue tip on it that I'll use to shrink
- 3:42the tubing around the coax and the
- 3:47connector next I've got some 38 I'm
- 3:50going to put on here this might be a
- 3:51little large let to see if it shrinks
- 3:53all the way down if it doesn't I will
- 3:54just uh remove it but it looks like it
- 3:57may do okay here this just adds another
- 4:00little bit of uh strain relief here to
- 4:03where the coax meets the connector
- 4:05itself and that completes the
- 4:07installation of this Crim style BNC
- 4:09connector from Max gain systems onto
- 4:12this rg8x coax
