- 0:00I feel like Pavlov's dog. He somehow
- 0:04managed to train me to drool on his
- 0:08command. Hello everyone, [ __ ] here.
- 0:13And today I’ve brought you something
- 0:15terrible, very, very terrible, very
- 0:17disgusting. Today we are going to
- 0:20discuss*Does It Hurt?*by H.D. Carlton.
- 0:23She also gifted us*Haunting Adeline*.
- 0:27In some ways, this masterpiece is even
- 0:30worse; it’s going to hurt us all. So
- 0:34buckle up, grab something tasty to eat
- 0:36and drink, and let's get started. Just,
- 0:40you know, be careful with the food. I
- 0:42won't be renaming anyone today, because
- 0:44it’s hard enough as it is. From the
- 0:47very prologue, Carlton decides to
- 0:49disorient us. I don’t know, maybe
- 0:52it’s intentional, so we’re busy
- 0:54untangling sentences and not thinking
- 0:56about what a pile of crap this is. The
- 0:59second paragraph. Someone is looking at
- 1:02the heroine, which makes her nervous.
- 1:04And how could she not be nervous when
- 1:07the niece of my cousin’s husband is
- 1:10staring intently at me? Could she have
- 1:13made it even more convoluted? Well, you
- 1:15see, it’s both a book and a puzzle
- 1:18collection as a bonus. Two in one. But
- 1:20I think you’ll see throughout the
- 1:22review that Carlton has a habit of
- 1:24writing in a way that makes finding
- 1:26meaning almost impossible. In short, we
- 1:30don’t know anything yet, except that
- 1:32our main character, Sawyer, was
- 1:34planning to fly somewhere, but then
- 1:36someone she knew saw her. She thinks
- 1:40she recognized her. And so, Sawyer
- 1:42freaks out, runs to the counter, and
- 1:44buys herself a ticket to Australia.
- 1:47Maybe some of you remember the joke
- 1:49about Australia being the place where
- 1:51Satan keeps his pets. Well, I think
- 1:54even they will all go into hiding when
- 1:56Sawyer arrives. The first chapter
- 1:58begins with an incomparable sentence. "
- 2:01Cancer tastes like crap." This is such
- 2:04a creative way of saying that Sawyer
- 2:06lit a cigarette. This, by the way, is
- 2:09often found in garbage like this.
- 2:11I’ve noticed any mention of smoking
- 2:13must be accompanied by a mention of
- 2:15cancer. Without fail, and more likely
- 2:18with a whole lecture about it too.
- 2:21I’m not saying it’s not true. Of
- 2:23course, smoking is bad. But I mean
- 2:26it’s exaggerated, because if you’ve
- 2:28already put smoking into your book,
- 2:30like, I don’t know, for coolness or
- 2:32whatever, then fine, that’s just your
- 2:34heroine. Why accompany it with
- 2:37paragraphs about the dangers of smoking
- 2:40? We have a book here, not a warning
- 2:42label on a pack of cigarettes. As you
- 2:45can see, in this book, I’m going to
- 2:46be nitpicking everything. Simply
- 2:49because after reading it, I had to take
- 2:51a leave of absence and I still haven't
- 2:53recovered from this crap. So I’m very
- 2:57angry and I need to vent it somewhere.
- 3:00So, Sawyer is smoking on an Australian
- 3:03beach after sleeping with the first guy
- 3:05she met. I still don't know his name,
- 3:09but he's good-looking and that's all
- 3:11that matters. Well, that and his killer
- 3:15nicotine. His killer Nikon is headed
- 3:19straight to the junk pile, because the
- 3:22editor hung themselves after the first
- 3:24sentence. "What kind of cancer do you
- 3:27think you'll get from that?" I ask,
- 3:29nodding at the cigarette in his hand. "
- 3:32I don't know, lung cancer is too
- 3:35typical. Throat." Do you think you'll
- 3:37die? He lets out a short laugh. I hope
- 3:40so. This is going to get dark, but
- 3:42maybe we can speed up the process for
- 3:44Sawyer. You know, so we don't have to
- 3:46suffer. Page two. I can't handle this
- 3:48anymore. One more drag and the taste
- 3:51seems a bit better when you remember
- 3:54you're inhaling death. It all reads, to
- 3:58me, like the author is 14 and thinks
- 4:01she's just so, you know, edgy and
- 4:04tragic. Having parted ways with Mr.
- 4:07Good-Looking, Sawyer is sitting at a
- 4:10bus stop and some weird old guy hits on
- 4:12her. His name is Simon and he almost
- 4:15immediately offers to show her his new
- 4:18tattoo. I mean, in principle, a normal
- 4:21everyday interaction. Nothing weird at
- 4:23all. It's clear Sawyer didn't grow up
- 4:25in the post-Soviet 90s, because she
- 4:27agrees. And Simon shows her an
- 4:31inscription on his leg, to which Sawyer
- 4:33says, "Oh my god, I love it so much.
- 4:37Probably even more than my favorite toe
- 4:39." The level of nonsense is rising, and
- 4:44my patience is not. By the way, for
- 4:46those who are adults and drinking
- 4:48something strong today, I propose a
- 4:50bonus drinking game. Every time I
- 4:53mention a toe, you can take a drink.
- 4:56You will die. "At least Simon confirms
- 4:59that it's not just me who's lost my
- 5:01mind, because he says he doesn't really
- 5:03get what the toe has to do with
- 5:04anything, let alone a favorite one. To
- 5:07which she shows him her foot and says
- 5:10she has a very cute pinky. And why that
- 5:12one specifically? What's wrong with the
- 5:14second one? You have two of them, after
- 5:15all. I, by the way, don't have a
- 5:17favorite toe, but my favorite part of
- 5:20the whole body is my eyes. And I am
- 5:22very unhappy that once again, thanks to
- 5:25Carlton, I wanted to gouge them out.
- 5:29Simon offers to give her a tattoo too,
- 5:31and she agrees, deciding that getting a
- 5:34tattoo from a stranger at a bus stop is
- 5:37too good an opportunity to pass up.
- 5:41That’s exactly the kind of perfect
- 5:43spontaneity I need. Do you also need a
- 5:46bouquet of infections? God, what
- 5:48nonsense. I mean, we’re still whining
- 5:51about cigarettes in every single
- 5:53paragraph. But getting a tattoo on a
- 5:56dirty bench from some random old guy,
- 5:58that’s cool and perfectly spontaneous
- 6:01. It all adds up. In case any of you
- 6:04sold your common sense to pay for this
- 6:06book. I’ll say that you shouldn’t
- 6:08do that. Never get tattoos in
- 6:10unsanitary conditions or from people
- 6:12who don’t know what they’re doing.
- 6:16I think, given how common tattoos are
- 6:18nowadays, we sometimes forget that
- 6:20it’s an actual medical procedure, a
- 6:22surface wound that’s very easy to
- 6:25infect. And treating it like it's some
- 6:29kind of joke, something completely
- 6:31mundane. It’s a one-way ticket to the
- 6:34hospital, if not somewhere worse. Simon
- 6:37starts giving her the same tattoo he
- 6:40has on his thigh with a needle and ink,
- 6:42without even wiping her skin first. I
- 6:46mean, all the dirt and sweat that was
- 6:48there just gets pushed right in along
- 6:50with the ink. Everything is fine. But
- 6:53let's move on. With her new gangrene,
- 6:56Sawyer ends up at a bar, where we find
- 6:58out she's using someone else’s IDs.
- 7:01Spoilers ahead: to sum it up, she’s
- 7:04supposedly wanted in America because
- 7:07she did something so terrible she
- 7:10can’t even explain it to us. So she
- 7:14occasionally sleeps with guys, steals
- 7:17their IDs, somehow makes forgeries with
- 7:20her photo, and opens credit cards in
- 7:23their names to get by. She came to the
- 7:27bar to celebrate, because after a beach
- 7:29hookup with a stranger, she was worried
- 7:31she was pregnant. But the test was
- 7:34negative, after which she immediately
- 7:37rushed to get an IUD. So, let's go over
- 7:40that again. This person slept with a
- 7:44stranger without protection and now got
- 7:47an IUD. It's a shame they don't offer
- 7:50brain implants at that clinic, because
- 7:53an IUD won't save you from STDs.
- 7:56Nevertheless, a party is a party, but
- 7:58there's work to be done. So she sits
- 8:00and waits for someone to hit on her.
- 8:03Instead of a client of her type, like a
- 8:06tired man in a suit, a hot macho guy
- 8:09sits next to her. No, I could get
- 8:12pregnant just by looking at you. Go
- 8:15away. Well, sure, a surefire way to
- 8:18drive a guy away is to tell him how hot
- 8:21he is. I lean into him, almost pressing
- 8:25my nose against his muscular bicep, and
- 8:28inhale deeply, rolling my eyes back.
- 8:31You also smell good, I groan. Get away.
- 8:36If telling him how hot he is didn't
- 8:38work. Try pressing your face into him
- 8:41and groaning about how good he smells.
- 8:44That should definitely work. If even
- 8:47that doesn't work, you might as well
- 8:48take your underwear off. It’s a
- 8:50success. And yet they continue to drink
- 8:53and talk. His name is Enzo. He’s from
- 8:56Italy. Dark-haired, muscular, tall.
- 8:59Well, you know, just like any hero in a
- 9:01novel like this. He works with sharks.
- 9:09He has his own research center where he
- 9:12observes sharks. And of course, he
- 9:15swims with them, which instantly adds
- 9:18100 points to his danger level. My
- 9:21thighs had already started aching from
- 9:24how hard I’d been clenching them for
- 9:27the two hours Enzo and I were talking.
- 9:30Honey, save your energy, because
- 9:32you’ll need to clench something else
- 9:34soon. At one point she goes," Stop
- 9:36trying to get me pregnant, Enzo. We
- 9:39aren't even friends. "Excuse me, but
- 9:41what is going on with all these
- 9:43pregnancy mentions? This is also going
- 9:46into the" what the heck "pile, because
- 9:48I have no clue what’s happening. What
- 9:50do pregnancy and friends have to do
- 9:52with anything? Then Enzo says," Come on
- 9:54, I'll show you something. "The phrase
- 9:57that starts about nine out of ten
- 9:59kidnappings and murders. She agrees,
- 10:02but only after saying," Let me just pay
- 10:04the bill first. "" If you take out your
- 10:07money, I’ll shove it down your throat
- 10:10, "he warns. And his voice drops to a
- 10:13dangerous level. And after that, she
- 10:16still went with him to an unfamiliar
- 10:18place.
- 10:25But seriously, what is wrong with
- 10:28everyone in this book? Enzo takes her
- 10:31to a beautiful and, naturally, deserted
- 10:33waterfall, and without hesitation, he
- 10:35takes off his shirt and jumps into the
- 10:38water. He asks if she’s going to join
- 10:41him. To which she says," Only if you
- 10:44promise not to touch me. "" I promise
- 10:47not to do anything unless you beg me to
- 10:49. "I groan loudly and throw my head
- 10:53back. I feel both relieved and angry
- 10:56that he couldn't just give the promise.
- 11:00He’s giving me very mixed signals.
- 11:04Yeah, let's take a look. He spent a few
- 11:06hours with you at a bar. Despite your
- 11:11extremely weird behavior, he brought
- 11:14you to a deserted place, stripped down,
- 11:17and is now inviting you into the water
- 11:20while using very suggestive language:"
- 11:23What mixed signals! Call a team of
- 11:27zoologists to help you decode the
- 11:29situation. "And let's not forget, she
- 11:32has a fresh tattoo that shouldn't be
- 11:35submerged, especially in an unknown
- 11:38body of water, but who cares when a hot
- 11:41Italian guy is involved. Deciding to go
- 11:45for it, I run, curl into a ball, and
- 11:47splash into the water like a total dork
- 11:50. Most girls would probably enter the
- 11:54water gracefully, like in a photoshoot,
- 11:57but my life is too uncertain to deny
- 11:59myself what I really want. Ladies and
- 12:03gentlemen, we have another one—
- 12:05another" not like other girls "trope.
- 12:08Then it starts in the water." Do you
- 12:10want to know what I was thinking about
- 12:12you when we were at the bar? "I ask.
- 12:14That I could make you pregnant with
- 12:16just one look? that you could destroy
- 12:20me with just the tip," I admit, smiling
- 12:23. They go in circles talking about
- 12:28whether they will have sex, then agree
- 12:31that it will honestly only be this one
- 12:34time. I’m tired of men who don’t
- 12:37know what they’re doing. So kiss me
- 12:40first. If you don't know how to use
- 12:43your mouth on me, you won't be able to
- 12:45use your [ __ ] either. Do you want me to
- 12:47use my mouth on you? I can do that,
- 12:51baby, but you’ll be mine. But I
- 12:55promised not to do anything unless you
- 12:58begged me to. She begs, and he tastes
- 13:02me, drinks from me. Like a sorrowful
- 13:06man desperately trying to escape
- 13:08everything in a bottle. I’ve been
- 13:11trying to escape this book in a bottle
- 13:13for a week now, but it’s not working.
- 13:17"Damn," he curses, pressing against me
- 13:19and continuing to caress me with his
- 13:21fingers. Somehow I notice a puddle of
- 13:24fluid on his palm, but I don't care.
- 13:28I’m too dazed by pleasure to pay
- 13:30attention to anything else. And first
- 13:34among all reviews, squirting enters the
- 13:37scene. Well, that’s probably in
- 13:39addition to the overall nautical theme.
- 13:41He refuses to have vaginal sex with her
- 13:44because he doesn't have a condom. To
- 13:47which she says: "I don't want to sound
- 13:50weird, since we’re strangers, but
- 13:52I’m healthy and on birth control."
- 13:55And he says: "Okay, I’m healthy too."
- 13:57And it’s not like you’ve only known
- 14:00him for three hours and he could easily
- 14:02lie to you. Next up is the description
- 14:05of a monster [ __ ]. It’s not just long
- 14:08, it’s incredibly thick, with veins
- 14:11bulging along it. Absolutely not, I say
- 14:15, shaking my head. There is no way I
- 14:17would change my mind. I point a finger
- 14:20at it. It would puncture a lung. I have
- 14:23the impression that the [ __ ] in these
- 14:25books are getting longer every year. At
- 14:27this rate, all the main characters will
- 14:29have a third leg. But he says: "You
- 14:32mentioned only the tip." That’s all
- 14:36you’re getting. I honestly don’t
- 14:39know what’s with these jokes about
- 14:41just the tip, but okay. His promise
- 14:44didn't last long, because soon she was
- 14:47already on top of him, taking it all.
- 14:50Are you in pain, Bella? You’re so big
- 14:53. It hurts.
- 14:54Stop.
- 14:56If this man were my kingdom, I would
- 14:59sit on this throne for a whole eternity
- 15:02. The treasury of nonsense will soon
- 15:07overflow. My God, Enso, I’m [ __ ]
- 15:10again. I breathe heavily. My name and
- 15:13God’s name should not be in the same
- 15:16sentence, Bella. He growls. His voice
- 15:20is as hard as the rock beneath us. One
- 15:23is holy, the other is wicked. Guess
- 15:27which one is mine. In response, only a
- 15:33muffled moan escapes my chest as a
- 15:36powerful wave of orgasm washes over me.
- 15:40I explode, sinking my teeth into his
- 15:43body. The world before my eyes darkens
- 15:46from the wild waves surging inside me.
- 15:50He lifts me above him, releasing the
- 15:52tension, and the fluid drips onto his
- 15:54stomach while my body shudders in
- 15:57spasms. I would be ashamed if I were
- 16:01capable of feeling anything other than
- 16:04this euphoria. It’s a complete mess.
- 16:07The sea is restless, and I’m worried
- 16:10about my mental health. After the
- 16:13waterfall, they go back to his place,
- 16:16and in the morning, while he sleeps,
- 16:19she digs through his drawers to steal
- 16:22his data, then sneaks out of the house.
- 16:26Oh my, he gave you the miracle of
- 16:29squirting, and later, at her hotel, she
- 16:32dyes her roots while keeping the stolen
- 16:35gun by her side. During the 20 minutes
- 16:39the chemicals work their magic, I smoke
- 16:42another cigarette and down a quarter
- 16:45bottle of vodka. At least it’s not
- 16:48boring. Honestly though, a quarter of a
- 16:50bottle in 20 minutes is intense. I hope
- 16:54it was a small flask and not a 700ml
- 16:56bottle. You can tell the vodka kicked
- 16:59in, because she starts seeing her twin
- 17:01brother, Kevin, in the mirror. We
- 17:05don’t know anything about him yet,
- 17:08other than the fact that he exists, but
- 17:10it’s clear she hates him because she
- 17:13starts screaming and arguing with him,
- 17:15then presses the gun to her own cheek.
- 17:20More dark stuff, but much to my regret,
- 17:23she changes her mind and we have to
- 17:25slog through the remaining 80%of the
- 17:28book. Switching to Enzo. She stole my
- 17:33damn data. For the life of me, I can't
- 17:36figure out what she's planning. And my
- 17:39own intentions are unclear, considering
- 17:42I still haven't dared to block the
- 17:45account or call the police. What could
- 17:49she be planning? Maybe she stole your
- 17:51ID just to buy some vodka at the store.
- 17:54He ponders all this while getting ready
- 17:56to get into the water with the sharks.
- 17:58I’m so furious, I’m ready to charge
- 18:01at a two-ton animal. And though I can't
- 18:04guarantee a win, I’d put up one hell
- 18:07of a fight. The problem is, I don’t
- 18:10want to fight a shark. Instead, I want
- 18:13to strangle the little mermaid who
- 18:15deceived me. Only in Carlton and
- 18:18Douglas can the protagonists be such
- 18:20edgelords that they'd fight a shark
- 18:23like he would. He decides he’s going
- 18:26to find Sawyer. And so he sits on the
- 18:28beach, waiting for her. A woman in a
- 18:31blue bikini heads toward me with a
- 18:34bright white smile under her sun hat. "
- 18:37No," I snap. She freezes in her tracks.
- 18:41The smile melts off her face like a
- 18:44scoop of ice cream. God, what an alpha.
- 18:49The woman might have just wanted to ask
- 18:50for the time. He finally waited until
- 18:54Sawyer appeared on the beach and
- 18:56offered her the best day of her life.
- 19:00Specifically, he says: "I'll let you
- 19:02swim with the sharks." When she
- 19:05hesitates, he dares her, saying, if
- 19:08you're brave enough. Child's play,
- 19:11knickers on a clothesline. Also among
- 19:15his persuasive arguments: "I'll give
- 19:17you a kiss, a reward." Oh really, have
- 19:20you been dreaming of that your whole
- 19:22life? And what is so special about his
- 19:25kiss, you might ask? I don't kiss
- 19:28anyone. I haven't met a woman yet who
- 19:32deserves that level of intimacy with me
- 19:35. And did he really mean it that he
- 19:40works with sharks, and not some other
- 19:42profession where they don't kiss either
- 19:45? Despite seeing a strange spark in his
- 19:48eyes and knowing this is a stupid idea,
- 19:51she agrees to go with him, because,
- 19:54well, he didn't give any signs that he
- 19:56already knew she had robbed him.
- 20:00Because it doesn't look like he was
- 20:02specifically waiting for you to lure
- 20:04you into a trap at all. No, people meet
- 20:07completely by accident every day on
- 20:10such a giant continent as Australia and
- 20:13on such giant beaches as they have.
- 20:16That's the norm. The treasure trove of
- 20:18nonsense grows when they talk about
- 20:21what will happen if you stick a foot
- 20:23out of the underwater cage. Maybe I
- 20:26shouldn't go. I wouldn't want to lose
- 20:30my favorite toe. He frowned. Do I even
- 20:35want to know? I point to my little toe.
- 20:38It's cute. Sharks love cute. They eat
- 20:41seals. Seals are cute.
- 20:45A few minutes later they are already at
- 20:48it, because why delay? And so he leads
- 20:51her to the edge of the boat, where two
- 20:54white sharks are swimming nearby. And
- 20:56right then, holding her by the throat,
- 20:59he says: "Tell me how," he whispers in
- 21:02my ear. His voice becomes harder. Even
- 21:07when an orgasm is on the horizon, an
- 21:09alarm starts ringing in my head as his
- 21:12hand tightens. If I barely manage to
- 21:15speak, his thrusts become increasingly
- 21:18sharper. Tell me, how can you be so
- 21:21easy with me, knowing what you stole
- 21:24from me? He chokes her, then bites her
- 21:28lip as hard as he can, and then bends
- 21:30her over the side of the boat and
- 21:32pushes her head underwater. Wanted to
- 21:35become a shark expert. Baby, you wanted
- 21:38to take this from me. Then you have to
- 21:41learn how to swim with them. And all
- 21:45this while he continues to violate her.
- 21:48I don't really, to be honest,
- 21:50understand the logistics here, because
- 21:52they are on their knees. He bends her
- 21:55over the side, while holding her thigh
- 21:57with his other hand. And he has to
- 22:00apply force to keep her underwater. I
- 22:04don't know, let's just imagine his arms
- 22:06are as oversized in length as his
- 22:08member, because otherwise, the math
- 22:10just doesn't add up for me. He drowns
- 22:13her while she's hysterical. Then he
- 22:16pulls her out of the water for a couple
- 22:18of seconds and returns her to the
- 22:20sharks. And then he does it all over
- 22:22again. Before I can even get a word out
- 22:26, he forces me under the water again. I
- 22:30snap my eyes open and this time I
- 22:33really see something moving under the
- 22:36surface. The outlines are blurry, but
- 22:38the movement is fast. It rises sharply
- 22:41from the ocean depths, aiming right at
- 22:45me. He yanks her out at the last moment
- 22:47. A second later, the shark breaks the
- 22:51surface exactly where my head just was,
- 22:54crashing into the boat with its jaws
- 22:56wide open, looking for prey.
- 22:59God, I nearly fainted.
- 23:02Remember, kids, this is Dark Romance.
- 23:04And Enzo-ing. This is called a little
- 23:09revenge, not a brutal rape. And yes, in
- 23:12case anyone got confused. It is rape.
- 23:17Because even though it all started
- 23:19voluntarily, she struggled later and
- 23:21begged him to stop when he literally
- 23:24started drowning her in water with
- 23:26hungry sharks. After such fun, he
- 23:29interrogates her about the theft. She
- 23:32had already managed to open a card in
- 23:34his name and spend a bit of money from
- 23:36it. He guesses she's wanted, which is
- 23:40why she can't get any job. The excuse
- 23:43is pretty weak, because many people
- 23:45work illegally, all the time, and
- 23:47changing your appearance, especially
- 23:49for a girl, really isn't that hard.
- 23:52Well, but without that, the plot
- 23:54wouldn't work. And saying it's just
- 23:56easier for her to live that way isn't
- 23:57an option either, because then it would
- 23:59be harder to feel sorry for her. So,
- 24:02she can't find a single job in the
- 24:04whole world because she's recognized
- 24:07everywhere. Actually, she must be from
- 24:10the Greyjoy clan. Like, we do not sow,
- 24:13we only—while he was throwing around
- 24:16pathos, like "these tears are mine now,
- 24:19and I'll shed plenty more if you don't
- 24:22tell me what I want to know." A storm
- 24:25has treacherously gathered at sea. All
- 24:27around, there are roars and waves,
- 24:29tossing the boat back and forth. Sawyer
- 24:31is in a panic, and Enzo grabs her to
- 24:33calm her down. Deep breath, baby. He
- 24:37has some kind of split personality,
- 24:39because a moment ago he hated her, and
- 24:41now she's "baby." But that's
- 24:43pathological. He'll be tossed around
- 24:46just like the boat, until the end when
- 24:48they flip, and Enzo slams his head into
- 24:50something and passes out. He wakes up
- 24:53to Sawyer frantically shaking him. He
- 24:57sees that they've ended up on a tiny
- 24:59rocky island with an old lighthouse.
- 25:03Stumbling inside, they meet a
- 25:06stereotypical sailor, complete with a
- 25:08long beard and a wooden leg. He is the
- 25:12local host, who operates this
- 25:15lighthouse. His name is Sylvester. And,
- 25:18oh god, why are almost all the
- 25:19characters here named something other
- 25:21than S? Enzo asks if he has a radio to
- 25:24get out of this suspicious place sooner
- 25:28. But Sylvester says no. That instantly
- 25:32makes everything even more suspicious,
- 25:34but that's just the beginning on that
- 25:35note, since we're just starting. Let me

- 26:08for your attention. Let's move on.
- 26:11Sylvester asks for their names, and
- 26:13Sawyer introduces herself with her real
- 26:15name. Ah, like, Enzo. She gave a fake
- 26:18one at first. I grit my teeth harder.
- 26:21It seems she doesn't feel the need to
- 26:23lie to him about her name. And that
- 26:26annoys the hell out of me. You won't
- 26:28believe it, but for most of the book,
- 26:30he will be seriously jealous of her
- 26:32with this old man. In short, the radio
- 26:35is either dead or broken, and ships
- 26:38supposedly don't pass by the island.
- 26:41Only once a month does one arrive, and
- 26:43Sylvester buys food and various
- 26:45supplies there. And how unlucky that it
- 26:49passed by just three days ago. What he
- 26:54doesn't say is that we are stuck here
- 26:57for a month. For a month with a creepy
- 27:01old geezer and a girl who almost stole
- 27:04my entire life. My entire life. He
- 27:09whines about this the whole book.
- 27:11It’s like she tried to sign over his
- 27:14house and business to herself and keep
- 27:16him in the basement as a sex slave.
- 27:18Sylvester takes them to an empty room.
- 27:21where Sawyer unhappily finds only one
- 27:25bed. Never happened in this genre
- 27:27before. And here's another shock. And
- 27:30then the old man says: "The toilet is
- 27:31across the hall.""But I don't like it
- 27:33when people walk around the house at
- 27:35night.""So, if you need to go, here is
- 27:38a bucket in the corner."
- 27:40A bucket.
- 27:41At this point, I would say alright then
- 27:43. It was nice to meet you. Do you
- 27:45happen to have any black pepper? I want
- 27:47to season myself so the sharks find me
- 27:49tastier. And that’s not all. So they
- 27:52don't think about disobeying him,
- 27:54Sylvester locks them in the bedroom.
- 27:57Here begins a cycle of endless
- 28:00bickering between our lovers. And in
- 28:04general, from the moment they get to
- 28:06the island, the book becomes so boring
- 28:08and repeats the same things so often
- 28:10that if the cringe doesn't finish you
- 28:12off, the dullness will. On the very
- 28:16first night, Sawyer hears some mystical
- 28:18sounds above that sound like the
- 28:19clanking of chains. And while she can't
- 28:24sleep because of this, she also
- 28:26remembers dragging an unconscious Enzo
- 28:28all the way to the island. Such a
- 28:32heroic secret. He will be shocked later
- 28:35when he finds out about it. But, well,
- 28:39did you think about how you both ended
- 28:41up in the same place, in a storm on
- 28:42dolphins? Here he wakes up while she is
- 28:46crying. "You're crying," he notes. "No,
- 28:49" I lie. I am sure you have never had
- 28:53to be strong before, Sawyer, but now is
- 28:56the time to learn. Oh, go to hell.
- 29:02You're annoying. The next day, or
- 29:04whenever, they headed out to fish.
- 29:07However, it's impossible to do without
- 29:10a long argument and without Enzo
- 29:13pulling her hair, threatening her, and
- 29:15so on. Who would doubt it, Enzo only
- 29:19knows how to bully a woman, because she
- 29:21was the only one of the two who managed
- 29:24to catch any fish. Back in the house,
- 29:27he cooks it and tells Sylvester that he
- 29:28doesn't eat fish himself. And the old
- 29:31man is like, he's never seen a man who
- 29:34would refuse good meat. The fact that
- 29:37he's implying I'm not a real man is
- 29:39obvious. But it's just as damn obvious
- 29:42that he is deeply mistaken. You're an
- 29:46animal, not a real man. Well, although
- 29:48what is usually meant by a real man
- 29:51doesn't differ that much from an animal
- 29:54anyway. In general, a real man just
- 29:56loves this. Or do we have "surimi" men
- 29:59or what? When they ask Sylvester about
- 30:02the strange night sounds, he says: "
- 30:04Those are ghosts." And he dumps a long,
- 30:08boring story on them about a ship with
- 30:10prisoners and how he was forced to kill
- 30:13some of them. I won't bore you with it;
- 30:16you probably have it hard enough
- 30:17already. The main thing to take away
- 30:19from this. Sylvester is lying, but
- 30:21Sawyer will think that there are real
- 30:23ghosts living in the lighthouse until
- 30:25the end of the book. Into the treasury
- 30:28of nonsense, Sawyer thinks upon seeing
- 30:31Enzo: "I can't stand how attractive he
- 30:33is, even when he stares at me like I
- 30:36haven't been sniffing marijuana." And
- 30:39they aren't sniffing marijuana. And
- 30:42even despite that, nothing adds up at
- 30:45all. And believe me, context won't help
- 30:48. Suspecting that something is wrong
- 30:50with the old man, they break into his
- 30:52bedroom. But then Sylvester comes in to
- 30:55take a nap, while they hide in fear.
- 30:58Enzo can't think of anything better
- 31:00than to put his hands down her pants. I
- 31:03open my mouth, ready to whisper quietly
- 31:07but firmly for him to suck on my
- 31:11favorite toe. But the only thing that
- 31:14comes out is a squeak. Toe. Actually,
- 31:21in this specific case, the phrase "
- 31:24sucking a toe" is slang for a lighter
- 31:27version of "suck my...". But it gets
- 31:31repeated in the same chapter. And
- 31:33besides, she’s annoyed everyone with
- 31:36her toe obsession. Enzo tells her: "I
- 31:39want to hear you break and be unable to
- 31:41scream." Well yeah, it’s not like
- 31:45Sylvester is already asleep and you
- 31:46guys should probably clear out of his
- 31:48room, because it would be really
- 31:50awkward if he caught you there. Instead
- 31:53, the torture continues. It hurts you,
- 31:57baby, that you can't scream for me the
- 31:59way you want to. This little one is so
- 32:04damn wet. Listen to how beautifully she
- 32:08sings for me. Why don't you sing me a
- 32:11lullaby, Bella? Let me hear it. Well,
- 32:16we haven't had singers before. Well,
- 32:19that was a surprise. And in general, if
- 32:21mine were singing, I wouldn't want her
- 32:24to put men to sleep. It should have the
- 32:26opposite effect. Nope. And when she
- 32:29finishes, she tries to sneak past the
- 32:31sleeping Sylvester. Her lullaby lulled
- 32:35him to sleep. Baby. So we are sticking
- 32:38with this metaphor. Yes, clear. I’m
- 32:40starting to understand the editor. Only
- 32:42Enzo seems to have decided to live in
- 32:45this closet, because he snaps at her.
- 32:48Like: "Where do you think you're going?
- 32:50If he thinks I’ll stay after this,
- 32:53then he can go to hell." I understand
- 32:57he was trying to distract me from my
- 33:00obvious panic attack, but now I feel
- 33:03cheap and I already regret it. Well, if
- 33:07that's what he was distracting you from
- 33:10. They keep living in constant
- 33:16arguments, but Sawyer finds a secret
- 33:18cave, where everything is very
- 33:20beautiful, and starts escaping there
- 33:23constantly to be alone. Enzo, meanwhile
- 33:26, walks around with a sour face, like
- 33:28someone peed in his cereal. So they are
- 33:31lying there one night, and she can't
- 33:33stand that this jerk is ignoring her.
- 33:36And he’s tossing and turning, keeping
- 33:38her awake. So she can't think of
- 33:41anything better than to push him and
- 33:43say, "Get out," to which he just shoves
- 33:45her off the bed. What kind of romance
- 33:50is that, people? They start wrestling
- 33:53around. She’s slapping him wherever
- 33:56she can reach. And a teenage spat
- 33:58ensues. Like: "You don't pay attention
- 34:01to me, you're so mean." It gets to "you
- 34:04want to hear something harsh, Sawyer?"
- 34:08How about the fact that it’s hard to
- 34:10sleep next to a damn soul-sucking demon
- 34:13? And just being near you makes me sick
- 34:18. And what’s even worse? I can still
- 34:21smell you on my fingers. Despite having
- 34:24washed you off, you’re the one who
- 34:26stuck them there yourself. Hello? He
- 34:29continues to pile it on her. Like: "
- 34:32You're the worst thing that's ever
- 34:33happened to me." And everything you do
- 34:36is calculated. Were you really
- 34:38panicking when we were in the closet?
- 34:40Or was that just another one of your
- 34:43plans? God, I want him to die so badly.
- 34:46I mean, she's trapped with you and the
- 34:49first thing she thinks is: I need to
- 34:51fake a panic because then he'll put his
- 34:54hands down my pants. It inevitably
- 34:57reaches the point where she's already
- 34:59turned on. Would you scream this time?
- 35:01"—he asks grimly." You always do that
- 35:05when you create your little ocean
- 35:07around me. "He also calls her Amor Mio.
- 35:16It all adds up. Page back. I hate you.
- 35:20Now my love. Absolutely stable behavior
- 35:25. However, this time it’s interrupted
- 35:28because one of them saw a girl standing
- 35:30in the ocean from the window. And
- 35:33naturally, this really unsettled them.
- 35:35Sylvester will later tell them that
- 35:37these are also ghosts. Of course,
- 35:40another week passes after the closet
- 35:43incident, and Enzo is furious that she
- 35:45disappears every day and pays him no
- 35:47mind. I mean, in the sense that she
- 35:51isn't sitting by me and letting me
- 35:54humiliate her 24/7. She’s gotten
- 35:56completely bold. It infuriates him so
- 35:59much that one fine day he sneaks after
- 36:02her into her secret cave and even has
- 36:05the audacity to think. It pisses me off
- 36:08that she was hiding this from me. Well,
- 36:11of course, because she owes you
- 36:13everything for some reason. In the cave
- 36:15, a conversation like this unfolds. Are
- 36:18you here to kill me, Enzo? Is it
- 36:21because I don't return your feelings,
- 36:23my dear? If anyone were to become
- 36:26obsessed with you, it would only be
- 36:28because of what's between your thighs,
- 36:30not because you have anything else to
- 36:33offer. She doesn't answer. She always
- 36:37has something to say until she faces
- 36:39the truth about her character and
- 36:42actions. Can someone please explain to
- 36:45me how we are supposed to think this
- 36:47scum is the man of our dreams? And
- 36:49further, when he approaches her and
- 36:52notices she's all frozen, he thinks: I
- 36:54like that she feels me, that she fears
- 36:57me. Stealing from me is the worst thing
- 37:00she is capable of, but I will do
- 37:02something much worse to her. I like
- 37:06that she fears me. The hero of our
- 37:09novel. If you think about it, this
- 37:12archetype is often featured in True
- 37:14Crime episodes like" He beat his wife
- 37:15because she oversalted his borscht. "
- 37:19Are you going to try to touch me?"—
- 37:21she throws out. "Belladonna, I will
- 37:24never touch you again, even when you
- 37:27beg me to." Oh, who are you kidding?
- 37:31Just when I think Enso can't be more
- 37:33disgraceful, he proves me wrong. By the
- 37:36way, Belaladra is a "good little thief.
- 37:38" He calls her that 100 million times
- 37:41throughout the book. Among other things
- 37:44, I wanted to note that people in my
- 37:46Telegram comments wrote he even called
- 37:48her a "little shark" in the Ukrainian
- 37:50translation, but to my great regret, I
- 37:53didn't find that in the original.
- 37:55Honestly, I just feel sorry for her.
- 37:57Having finished another session of
- 38:00tormenting her, he leaves. She is left
- 38:03bewildered and ashamed, and won't dare
- 38:06to show her face for a long time. "I
- 38:10have plenty of time to finish while
- 38:13thinking of your tears."
- 38:15God, what a piece of work.
- 38:19Later, in the lighthouse, he continues
- 38:22with this crap. And after the next
- 38:25moment, I will start skipping most
- 38:27similar parts because I am too tired.
- 38:30But keep in mind that there are plenty
- 38:32more of them. So, having pulled her
- 38:35hair again, he says: "Because I want to
- 38:39see you suffer, and I’ll do
- 38:41everything in my power to make that
- 38:44happen; if it means keeping you alive
- 38:47just so I can destroy you, so be it."
- 38:50Then he shoves me away, forcing me to
- 38:54stumble and land right on my butt. Well
- 38:58, at least he didn't punch her in the
- 39:00face, I don't know. Though, in
- 39:02principle, it makes no difference.
- 39:08Meanwhile, the ghosts are still acting
- 39:11up. Sylvester keeps hitting on Sawyer,
- 39:14which is maximally disgusting, I have
- 39:16to say. And so we move on to the next
- 39:19scene. Is this one even fighting? I
- 39:22think you can already see what I meant
- 39:25when I said the book is endlessly
- 39:27repetitive. This time they are sleeping
- 39:29, and she dreams of having sex with him
- 39:31. But at the most interesting part, he
- 39:34accidentally hits her in the head with
- 39:37his arm, and she wakes up. To get
- 39:40revenge, she wakes him up in return,
- 39:42and it begins: "What are you doing?
- 39:45Well, you ruined a good dream for me.
- 39:48How dare you wake me up for that? And
- 39:51anyway, what was it, what did you dream
- 39:53about me, what was I doing to you there
- 39:55?" And she's like, "No, nothing
- 39:57happened there." That's another lie.
- 40:00Sawyer, I can hear your "fish" from
- 40:04here. Personally, this only raises
- 40:09questions about her health. Well, but
- 40:13what's surprising about that, if you
- 40:15sleep with random guys without a condom
- 40:18, and do it on beaches and in
- 40:20waterfalls? Even if she avoided STDs,
- 40:23getting a yeast infection is easy as
- 40:26pie. Anyway, never mind. She's like, "
- 40:29My cheeks burn when I feel how slippery
- 40:33the inside of my thighs is." It feels
- 40:36like she has a faucet down there.
- 40:38Strange that only her thighs are
- 40:39slippery, and not all the way to her
- 40:41heels. Well, with a stud like that in
- 40:43bed. They are f---ing. Even though he
- 40:46promised so loudly just a couple of
- 40:48pages ago that he would never do that
- 40:50again. I think my bladder is about to
- 40:55empty itself. And even though I know
- 40:58exactly what he’s going to make me do
- 41:01, I feel like I’m losing control of
- 41:03my own body. You will finish for me,
- 41:05Bella, and you'll go crazy. Depend on
- 41:08me. If I’m not covered in all of this
- 41:12, I’ll make you repeat it until
- 41:14there’s nothing left of you. Just
- 41:17don't flood the neighbors downstairs.
- 41:20It doesn’t take long for him to
- 41:22return to beast mode. And here we go
- 41:25again. Because the girl I brought home
- 41:28was not the same person who stole my
- 41:31life from me. Man, this really kills me
- 41:34. This is what stole my life. Oh, for
- 41:38God's sake, Enzo, you can just call the
- 41:40bank and cancel that card. Exhale, calm
- 41:44down, tape. So one evening, she and
- 41:49Sylvester got together to have a drink
- 41:51and share their secrets. During their
- 41:54hangout, she hands Sylvester her glass
- 41:56so he can pour her some more. And Enzo
- 41:59is just having enough. Holy [ __ ], boy.
- 42:02Maybe you should also order her when
- 42:04she is and isn't allowed to go to the
- 42:06bathroom. By the end, she continues to
- 42:09drink and reveals that her twin brother
- 42:11had been molesting and raping her since
- 42:14childhood. What a shock! Nobody, and I
- 42:17mean nobody, suspected it would come to
- 42:20this. Sylvester, for his part, says he
- 42:22lived with his wife and two daughters.
- 42:25One of them committed suicide, and his
- 42:27wife took the other one with her when
- 42:29she left the island. Don't start
- 42:31feeling sorry for him yet, because I
- 42:33think most of you have already realized
- 42:35that you can't trust him. Enzo's tragic
- 42:39backstory, by the way, which he told
- 42:42earlier, is that his mother left him at
- 42:44a monastery when he was about eight,
- 42:47said she’d return, and never did. So
- 42:51he grew up with the nuns. I understand
- 42:55everything, but mommy issues at his age
- 42:57can no longer serve as an excuse for
- 42:59such shitty behavior. Was I supposed to
- 43:02pity him because of that or what? After
- 43:04learning what her brother did to her,
- 43:07and also that she carried Enzo across
- 43:09the ocean on her back so he wouldn't
- 43:11die, our hero suddenly changes his mind
- 43:14and starts telling her how unique she
- 43:16is and how wrong he was to call her
- 43:19weak. And every day I lie to myself,
- 43:23telling myself that I’m only hooked
- 43:25on you because of how sweet you taste
- 43:28or how easily you cry for me. But I
- 43:32know it’s just about you. The only
- 43:35ones crying here are the readers, you
- 43:36jerk. There’s a whole bunch of sex
- 43:39scenes after this, but I really have to
- 43:42quickly recap one. So, they’re on the
- 43:46beach, and at one point, when she’s
- 43:48on top, he turns her around so her back
- 43:50is to him and she’s facing the ocean,
- 43:53and he uses two fingers to stretch her
- 43:55mouth while saying: "Smile, little one.
- 43:57" Why? Just tell me, why does the sex
- 44:06in Carlton have to be so weird? And not
- 44:09in a good way, either. She decides to
- 44:12mess with him and gets off right before
- 44:16he finishes. What does he say? Sawyer
- 44:19continues to test my patience. "Your
- 44:23smile is only beautiful thanks to those
- 44:25teeth.""I wouldn’t want to see you
- 44:28without them." Girls, I don’t know
- 44:30about you, but I just instantly climax
- 44:32when someone threatens to knock all my
- 44:34teeth out. It’s always one thing
- 44:37after another with us. After a few days
- 44:39, Sawyer figured she’d just stay on
- 44:41the island with Sylvester, and then
- 44:43supposedly she wouldn’t have to run
- 44:45from the law. The old man is thrilled,
- 44:48of course, and Enzo is losing his mind.
- 44:51He says: "Come with me instead, and
- 44:54I’ll protect you." She asks: "And
- 44:56what would I do in that case?" To which
- 44:59he’s like: "You’ll work for me?"
- 45:01Well, that’s so he can not only
- 45:03physically and verbally abuse her, but
- 45:05financially as well. I am understanding
- 45:07that correctly, right? Then he
- 45:09apologizes for the repeated rape. Like
- 45:12that’s somehow supposed to make
- 45:14things better or undo everything he did
- 45:17after that. Suddenly gathering some
- 45:20courage, she says: "If you want me to
- 45:22choose you, get on your knees and
- 45:24apologize for how you treated me." He
- 45:28does it, and at that moment, I’m
- 45:29already wondering how many pages
- 45:31it’ll take until he goes back to
- 45:33swearing at her. See how much he enjoys
- 45:37insulting her. But to forgive him, she
- 45:41also wants him to kiss my favorite toe
- 45:45first. I want to officially address all
- 45:50sharks. If you see this woman in the
- 45:53water, please bite that toe off. Or
- 45:55better yet, just eat her whole. Do
- 45:58humanity a small favor. By the way,
- 46:01this chapter mentions three times that
- 46:03he sniffs her crotch. Now I’m
- 46:06convinced there is something very wrong
- 46:08there. And honestly, now that we’re
- 46:10on that subject, they saw a boat from
- 46:12the window recently. Which means
- 46:14Sylvester lied to them about no one
- 46:16ever sailing by. And since Sylvester
- 46:19won’t let them near the spotlight,
- 46:21maybe Sawyer could just go outside
- 46:23closer to the sea. Like, you know,
- 46:25maybe they’ll sniff her out from the
- 46:26ship. I don’t remember how, but she
- 46:29bumped her head somewhere around here.
- 46:31I think I fell from somewhere, but
- 46:33that's not really important. Anyway,
- 46:35the chapter begins with: "They say you
- 46:37should never sleep with a concussion."
- 46:40It's common knowledge, but I've reached
- 46:43the point where I don't care if it
- 46:45makes me brainless. Oh, honey, you
- 46:47don't have to worry about that anymore.
- 46:50Sleep to your heart's content. There
- 46:52they go again, whispering about their
- 46:54little secrets. And she asks Vence for
- 46:57the full history of his family. After
- 46:59Mia Madra left me on the steps, I was
- 47:02taken to the Sacred Heart Institute,
- 47:04where I was raised and went to school.
- 47:07Depends on which fabric, depends on
- 47:09where the FAK comes from.
- 47:11The scariest part is that he talks like
- 47:13that all the time. And in this case,
- 47:15it's very obvious that Carlton has
- 47:17absolutely no idea how to properly
- 47:20write a character who is speaking a
- 47:22non-native language. Since they got
- 47:25close and decided she would go home
- 47:28with him, she decides to tell Sylvester
- 47:30, because he had somehow convinced
- 47:32himself that she had finally decided to
- 47:34stay with him. When she says she's
- 47:38leaving, he threatens that if she
- 47:40doesn't obey, he'll tell everyone she's
- 47:42wanted by the law. She asks: "What
- 47:45makes him think she's wanted?" And
- 47:48he’s like: "You expect me to believe
- 47:50that a young lady like you hasn't
- 47:53resorted to illegal acts to make ends
- 47:55meet?" The treasure trove of nonsense
- 47:58is about to explode, because, like,
- 48:00what does that even mean? So, it turns
- 48:03out all young girls are just criminals,
- 48:06otherwise they couldn't survive. This
- 48:10reminds me of an artist. All women are
- 48:13hookers. Completely losing it,
- 48:15Sylvester hits her in the face. Enzo
- 48:18runs in, but Sylvester is in control of
- 48:20the situation with a shotgun. This is
- 48:24followed by a lot of rustling and
- 48:26running back and forth, but it ends
- 48:28with Enzo locking Sylvester in his own
- 48:30basement, where, by the way, an entire
- 48:32graveyard of victims 'scabs is hidden.
- 48:36And Enzo himself runs to the cave where
- 48:38Soyar had escaped earlier. He wants
- 48:40what I have. When she remains silent, I
- 48:43shift my gaze to her. You, Bella? He
- 48:46doesn't like the thought that you
- 48:48belong to me—I say in a voice so low
- 48:50I don't even recognize it myself.
- 48:53Imagine how he'd feel if he had to
- 48:56watch that. Everything in the world
- 48:58revolves around you, after all. It's
- 49:01not that Sylvester just wants a young
- 49:04girl to rape. He's jealous of you
- 49:07because she's your property. Ugh. I
- 49:11can't. He literally makes me want to
- 49:13puke. Here he decides to confess his
- 49:15feelings to her in Italian, so it would
- 49:18be easier for him to pour his soul out
- 49:20to her. Even when I speak in another
- 49:23language, she still hears me. Well,
- 49:26honey, that’s actually how sound
- 49:28works, regardless of what language
- 49:29you’re speaking. I obviously
- 49:32understand what was intended here, but
- 49:34these ass-backwards phrasings just
- 49:36invite mockery. And she replies, "
- 49:39Someday I'll learn Italian and
- 49:41understand everything you said to me."
- 49:44The funniest thing about this is that
- 49:47he was supposed to say or admit
- 49:49something he didn't have the courage to
- 49:52say in English. But the problem is that
- 49:55, in the end, he didn't actually say
- 49:57anything new at all. I mean, it was the
- 50:00same old stuff about how unique she is
- 50:02and how he can't stop thinking about
- 50:04her, and how he can't hate her. The
- 50:07question is: what's the point of all
- 50:08this? Well, for the drama, of course.
- 50:11Another sex scene; as she nears
- 50:13squirting, he says: "It's time for you
- 50:15to take revenge, Belaladra. I already
- 50:19drowned you once. Now it's your turn to
- 50:22drown me." I instantly wrap my hands
- 50:25around her thighs and pull her back to
- 50:28my face with all my might. Mouth wide
- 50:31open, I drink from her like a man who
- 50:33has been wandering the open sea for
- 50:35months. My name echoes while she
- 50:39writhes above me, filling my mouth with
- 50:42her wetness, which trickles down my
- 50:44lips. He says: "I’m going to
- 50:51overwrite your bad memory of me
- 50:53drowning you." With a good memory of me
- 50:56drowning you. I lift her buttocks
- 50:59higher, choosing a more convenient
- 51:01angle to reach her cervix. But that
- 51:05hurts. Hello? And personally, it's hard
- 51:08for me to imagine how this pain could
- 51:11be pleasurable. Like, you could even
- 51:14get a bruise from that, and then your
- 51:16stomach hurts for several days. Great
- 51:19fun. In short, he's hurting and "
- 51:22drowning" her because he wants her
- 51:25while she feels like she's dying. After
- 51:29finishing inside her, he coats his
- 51:32finger in his sperm and shoves it into
- 51:35her back door because he wants to be
- 51:37everywhere. But then he even writes his
- 51:42name on her with his sperm. Yeah, why
- 51:46not? Just write it on her forehead with
- 51:48a marker so it’s clear and visible to
- 51:50everyone. Or better yet, get a tattoo
- 51:52from that old man at the beginning of
- 51:54the book, just to be sure. The next day
- 51:57, they return to the lighthouse and see
- 51:59that Sylvester and the basement are
- 52:01gone. Now they need to hurry and find
- 52:04the spotlight, and make sure they don't
- 52:06get ambushed by the ghost. Meanwhile,
- 52:09the ghosts are getting bolder, since
- 52:12someone tried to break down the
- 52:14couple's bedroom door, leaving, well,
- 52:16physical scratches. Finally, it starts
- 52:20to dawn on them that these probably
- 52:21aren't any friendly Caspers. They spend
- 52:24several days in a row looking for that
- 52:26spotlight room. And so, on the second
- 52:28day or whatever, Enzo suddenly starts
- 52:31acting like a total jerk again. He
- 52:33spends the whole day either ignoring
- 52:35her or being rude to her. And when he
- 52:38orders her to eat what he’s cooked,
- 52:40she says, "I’m not hungry." Well,
- 52:43because she’s been under constant
- 52:45stress, he lunges at her, grabs her
- 52:48hair, and slams her back against the
- 52:50table. Once again dumping a pile of
- 52:54insults and filth on her. And do you
- 52:57know what triggered this childish
- 52:58tantrum? He accidentally found a credit
- 53:01card that Sawyer had opened in his name
- 53:03and just hadn't thrown away yet. So,
- 53:07instead of asking her like a normal
- 53:08human being and figuring out what
- 53:10happened, he had to act like total scum
- 53:12all day and raise his hand against her.
- 53:15He drives her to tears, but even that
- 53:18isn't enough for him. You have no right
- 53:21to cry. When did you ever ruin me?
- 53:26She apologizes for the hundredth time,
- 53:28and he says, "I know, but I still don't
- 53:31want to forgive you." Well then, go
- 53:34jump in a lake. What could she possibly
- 53:36do to you? I mean, she’s supposed to
- 53:39forgive you for violent rape, for how
- 53:40you've behaved this whole time, and for
- 53:42the fact that you actually kidnapped
- 53:44her. But you, heaven forbid, can't
- 53:47forgive her because she opened a card
- 53:49in your name and spent a few hundred
- 53:51dollars. And you realized what she did
- 53:55immediately, and you chose not to block
- 53:57the card yourself. A total catastrophe.
- 54:00No one in this world has ever been
- 54:03treated worse than you. Then they start
- 54:05going at it so hard they actually break
- 54:07the table. And now he’s confessing
- 54:09his love to her, and she to him. And in
- 54:12honor of this, she decides to come
- 54:14clean about everything and says that
- 54:17she killed her brother. That’s
- 54:20supposedly why the entire police force
- 54:22of the world is chasing her. Well, at
- 54:24least that’s how she presents it
- 54:26throughout the book. And, in short, he
- 54:28had been raping her from childhood
- 54:30until she was 18. Her parents didn’t
- 54:33believe her, he was a cop, so going to
- 54:34them wasn't an option either. One day
- 54:37she just snapped and stabbed him. That
- 54:39was all more or less obvious. Almost
- 54:41from the beginning. So, the plot twist
- 54:43is pretty weak. After finishing her
- 54:46story, she waits for his reaction, but
- 54:49he remains calm. Why aren't you angry?
- 54:52I killed a person in cold blood. Sorry,
- 54:56but if someone is going to be shocked
- 54:58or angry at me for killing my rapist, I
- 55:00won’t talk to them anymore. I don’t
- 55:03need people like that in my life.
- 55:05Goodbye. He asks: "Do you want me to be
- 55:07angry?" I think a normal person’s
- 55:10reaction would be shock. A lot of
- 55:14judgment, and then, perhaps, a quiet
- 55:16call to 911. Oh, you guys are just all
- 55:20abnormal nightmares. Raise your hand in
- 55:22the comments, please, if you would
- 55:25react to this story with shock and
- 55:27judgment, not applause. Because, well,
- 55:29I honestly don't believe that such
- 55:31normal people are the majority. Finally
- 55:34, they found a spotlight because some
- 55:37unknown person moved a shelf that was
- 55:40hiding a door. And then, a skinny,
- 55:43filthy girl with her mouth stitched
- 55:45shut walks into the room. Enzo Pescho
- 55:49realizes that she is real. What—
- 55:52screams Sawyer. What do you mean when
- 55:54you say she is real? Is that good or
- 55:57bad? And what do you think? A ghost
- 55:59can't really do you much harm, unlike a
- 56:02potentially unstable human being. They
- 56:05figure out that this is Sylvester’s
- 56:07second daughter and she confirms that
- 56:09he actually killed her mother so she
- 56:11wouldn't leave the island. Next, I
- 56:14don't understand the logic at all,
- 56:16because Enzo is about to go downstairs
- 56:19when he hears that, uh, Sylvester has
- 56:21appeared there, and he's like, "This
- 56:23could turn into a shootout." What is
- 56:26all this for? If you've already found a
- 56:29witness, you can just shoot his head
- 56:31off from around the corner now. Why
- 56:33this heroism? What shootout, anyway?
- 56:37While gunshots start coming from below,
- 56:39the girl suddenly changes her mind
- 56:41about helping them and attacks Sawyer.
- 56:44She manages to run downstairs and sees
- 56:46only Sylvester, who is sitting
- 56:48contentedly on the sofa. He says that
- 56:51the daughter was very happy to have a
- 56:53friend, that is, Sawyer. And also that
- 56:57he sewed her mouth shut because she
- 56:58somehow tried to call for help, despite
- 57:01the fact that he had already cut out
- 57:02her tongue. Well, in short, like, he's
- 57:06just very twisted. While she is
- 57:09fighting him, stabbing him with a knife
- 57:11and all that, Enzo wakes up in the
- 57:13basement and decides to set fire to his
- 57:15door to get out. A trick that only
- 57:18works in Carlton's imagination. But
- 57:21never mind that. The still-alive
- 57:23Sylvester shoots Enzo, but his daughter
- 57:25is just as fickle as our main
- 57:27characters. So she changes her mind
- 57:29again and throws herself to protect him
- 57:32. She died. Enzo shot Sylvester, and
- 57:36all they have left to do is wait for
- 57:38help to finally arrive. Meanwhile, Enzo
- 57:42gets a "brilliant idea" for Sawyer to
- 57:44pretend to be Sylvester's second
- 57:46daughter. To, like, pretend that the
- 57:50real Sawyer died on this very island a
- 57:52long time ago. That way, she can, like,
- 57:55start a new life. And I'm afraid to
- 57:58even start explaining how idiotic this
- 58:00plan is and how many things in it don't
- 58:02work. So let's just pretend that it all
- 58:05adds up. They are taken to the police
- 58:08and interrogated. Sawyer gives them a
- 58:11note that the real Sawyer supposedly
- 58:13wrote before committing suicide.
- 58:16Somehow people believe she's
- 58:17Sylvester's daughter, because she
- 58:19claims her father liked to beat one
- 58:21girl, but liked to rape her, which is
- 58:23why she's supposedly so well-groomed.
- 58:27DNA tests, of course, don't exist in
- 58:29the Carlton world, nor does logic, but
- 58:31fine. Finally they both get released,
- 58:35and Sawyer, naturally, goes to live
- 58:37with Enzo, where we are gifted with
- 58:39this charming conversation. You don't
- 58:42want kids? Absolutely not. I return at
- 58:44the exact moment he walks out of the
- 58:47shower. Water droplets run down his
- 58:50tanned skin, lingering on the light
- 58:52fuzz on his chest and getting lost in
- 58:55the chiseled grooves of his abs. My
- 58:58mouth goes dry. Okay, maybe I do. Just
- 59:02the tip of the "beul" is enough. Should
- 59:05have named them "tip" and "finger." It
- 59:08seems like all the drama is over, but
- 59:11we still have a hell of a lot of
- 59:13chapters left because some authors
- 59:15don't know when to stop. They find out
- 59:19that Sawyer was even more heroic than
- 59:21they imagined, because after her
- 59:24brother’s murder, several young girls
- 59:27confirmed he had raped them too. And
- 59:30now she starts a new life with a new
- 59:33name. But you want to hear the funny
- 59:35part? She keeps the name Sawyer, sort
- 59:38of in honor of the poor girl who died
- 59:41on her island. And only her last name
- 59:45changes to Vitale, that is, the name of
- 59:48Enzo, who was the one who made her take
- 59:51it. But that’s not all from the
- 59:55treasure chest of nonsense. Although we
- 59:58are approaching the level of
- 59:59high-as-a-kite gibberish "a month later
- 1:00:01." I still don't understand why you
- 1:00:04insisted I take your last name. We're
- 1:00:06not even married. Marriage is just a
- 1:00:09piece of paper, but a last name is not.
- 1:00:13What, two years later they are both in
- 1:00:15a cage under the water, with sharks
- 1:00:17swimming nearby? While they sailed
- 1:00:21there on a yacht, a boat Enzo bought
- 1:00:24the day of their engagem...he took me
- 1:00:27out on the water at sunset and put a
- 1:00:30diamond ring on my finger without even
- 1:00:33asking. Like, seriously, why do they
- 1:00:37never even ask? It's just some kind of
- 1:00:40torture, it's like...Like, because
- 1:00:42asking isn't "alpha" enough, or what?
- 1:00:45Thank God, at this point we are
- 1:00:47wrapping things up. I don't know what
- 1:00:49to tell you in conclusion. Carlton
- 1:00:51never ceases to amaze me with this kind
- 1:00:54of horror. Although I thought that
- 1:00:56after stalking Adelina and that other
- 1:00:58[ __ ] that's in there—is it a sequel
- 1:01:00or something?—it was impossible, but
- 1:01:02it turns out it's possible. So, uh,
- 1:01:05write to me what you thought. Thank you
- 1:01:07for your attention and see you in the
- 1:01:10next video. Meow to everyone.
