3 Terrifying TRUE New Home Horror Stories — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:12A few years ago, my 6-month pregnant
- 0:14wife Rachel and I were fortunate enough
- 0:16to buy our first home.
- 0:18It wasn't big, but it was ours.
- 0:21In an effort to cut costs and keep the
- 0:22prices low as possible, we waived the
- 0:25home inspection.
- 0:26I know this isn't something that people
- 0:28advise, but we just didn't have the
- 0:29money.
- 0:30We loved our new little home and moved
- 0:32in as soon as we could.
- 0:34Since my wife was already out of work,
- 0:36she [music] spent the first couple of
- 0:37days getting the house organized while I
- 0:38was working.
- 0:40The first day she was there alone while
- 0:42I was working, she said that she heard
- 0:43strange noises coming from the basement.
- 0:46At first, she thought it was just her
- 0:47imagination, so she ignored it.
- 0:50By the third or fourth time she heard
- 0:52something down there, she was
- 0:53legitimately freaked out.
- 0:56She opened the door and thought she
- 0:57heard something move, so she shut the
- 0:59door and put a chair under the doorknob
- 1:01as a makeshift lock.
- 1:03She told me she was too afraid to go
- 1:04down and look.
- 1:06Rachel has always been a textbook
- 1:08over-thinker and an anxious person.
- 1:09[music]
- 1:10She told me that there was a part of her
- 1:12that thought she was just being crazy
- 1:13and hearing things.
- 1:15That's why she didn't call me at work
- 1:16and just waited for me to get home.
- 1:19When I got home, I went into the
- 1:20basement and looked around.
- 1:22There was nothing down there except for
- 1:24some random boxes of storage.
- 1:26I told her that she was just getting
- 1:28used to being in a new house, and that
- 1:30she would have to get used to all the
- 1:31weird noises that houses make.
- 1:33She agreed.
- 1:34That night, I woke up in the middle of
- 1:36the night because now I thought I heard
- 1:38something coming from the basement.
- 1:40I jumped out of bed and just stood in
- 1:42the bedroom and tried to listen.
- 1:44I didn't want to wake up my wife.
- 1:46I crept over to the vent and put my ear
- 1:48[music] on it.
- 1:49I didn't have to worry about waking up
- 1:50Rachel because she was already awake.
- 1:53She scared the crap out of me when she
- 1:55started talking to me.
- 1:57She told me that she had been awake for
- 1:58about an hour.
- 2:00She said she heard what sounded like a
- 2:01door to creek open.
- 2:03I asked her why she didn't wake me up
- 2:05[music] and she told me she thought she
- 2:06was just hearing things.
- 2:08She figured she was just on edge from
- 2:09earlier.
- 2:11I left the bedroom and went downstairs.
- 2:13Nothing looked out of place.
- 2:15I did notice that the basement door was
- 2:17slightly open, so I shut it.
- 2:20I knew that I shut it earlier, so I
- 2:21figured maybe a draft [music] of some
- 2:23kind forced it open.
- 2:25For the rest of the night, we both
- 2:26tossed and [music] turned.
- 2:28There were several times throughout the
- 2:30night that we heard a loud noise coming
- 2:31from the basement.
- 2:33I called into work [music] that morning
- 2:34so I could stay home with her.
- 2:36We were both exhausted.
- 2:38I tried telling myself that it's just a
- 2:40new house and it's going to take a
- 2:41little while to get used to all the
- 2:43noises that unfamiliar houses make.
- 2:45We spent that day getting more stuff
- 2:47unpacked. [music]
- 2:48Rachel was joking with me that we lived
- 2:50in a real haunted house.
- 2:52We both laughed about [music] it since
- 2:54we were both big horror movie fans.
- 2:56She even suggested watching Paranormal
- 2:58Activity after dinner.
- 3:00That night we went to bed early since
- 3:02neither of us slept well the previous
- 3:04night.
- 3:05Rachel ended up waking up around
- 3:06midnight.
- 3:08She told me she was having a nightmare
- 3:09that someone was hiding in the closet.
- 3:12It scared her so badly that it woke her
- 3:13up out of a deep sleep.
- 3:15Once she was awake, she just laid there
- 3:17in bed for a few minutes staring at the
- 3:19mostly dark room.
- 3:21Then she saw something that genuinely
- 3:22freaked her out.
- 3:24She said that at first she didn't think
- 3:26much of it thinking it was just a weird
- 3:27shadow in the doorway that resembled a
- 3:29person.
- 3:30Then the shadow moved out of the
- 3:32doorway.
- 3:34It scared Rachel so badly that she
- 3:35actually screamed which woke me up.
- 3:38She was crying and told me that she saw
- 3:40[music] someone standing in the doorway.
- 3:42I couldn't believe it.
- 3:44I jumped out of bed and grabbed my
- 3:45softball bat out of the closet.
- 3:48I started walking around the house and
- 3:49once again, I didn't see anything except
- 3:51[music] that stupid basement door was
- 3:53open again.
- 3:54After searching the entire house, I shut
- 3:56the basement door and went back to the
- 3:58bedroom.
- 4:00I felt terrible telling Rachel that
- 4:01nobody was in the house [music] because
- 4:02I didn't want her to think that I
- 4:03thought she was crazy.
- 4:05I did believe she saw something. I just
- 4:07didn't know exactly what she could have
- 4:09seen.
- 4:10She said that she was 100% sure that the
- 4:12shadow she saw was a person.
- 4:15Once again, we barely slept the rest of
- 4:17the night.
- 4:18When we both finally were about to fall
- 4:20asleep, we heard a loud crash come from
- 4:22somewhere in the house.
- 4:24Rachel was crying and I was honestly
- 4:26scared as well.
- 4:28I just couldn't explain what was going
- 4:29on.
- 4:31I locked the bedroom door and basically
- 4:32sat there with a baseball bat until
- 4:34morning.
- 4:35Once it was morning, we left the
- 4:37bedroom.
- 4:38Rachel made coffee and I searched
- 4:39[music] the house again.
- 4:41When I went down into the basement, I
- 4:43noticed that several of the boxes had
- 4:44been knocked over.
- 4:46I went upstairs and told Rachel what I
- 4:48had found.
- 4:49I asked her if it was possible that
- 4:51animals could have knocked the stuff
- 4:52over.
- 4:53She didn't think that was the case.
- 4:55I just didn't know if squirrels or
- 4:57raccoons were capable of this kind of
- 4:59thing.
- 5:00I was almost hoping that we had an
- 5:01animal of some kind in the basement. At
- 5:03least that way we would know what was
- 5:05making all the noise and then we could
- 5:06properly deal with it.
- 5:08While we were drinking our coffee and
- 5:10talking about it, she said she wanted to
- 5:12go downstairs and see the knocked over
- 5:14boxes for herself.
- 5:16Once we got down there, we looked
- 5:17around.
- 5:18And other than the boxes, nothing looked
- 5:20out of place.
- 5:22We started picking up the boxes and
- 5:23stacking them back up neatly.
- 5:26After I picked up the last box, I
- 5:28noticed something weird on the ground.
- 5:30There was some dirt that I didn't notice
- 5:31before.
- 5:33I looked a little closer and saw a faint
- 5:35dirt trail that led near the furnace.
- 5:38The dirt looked like it had been crawled
- 5:39through instead of stepped on.
- 5:41When I got over near the furnace,
- 5:43I saw that there was another small patch
- 5:45of dirt that led to a small nook behind
- 5:47the furnace.
- 5:48Behind the furnace in the small nook was
- 5:51a little door.
- 5:52I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
- 5:55There was a small crawl space down here
- 5:56that neither one of us knew about.
- 5:59It was so hidden that if you didn't know
- 6:00it was there, you would never see it.
- 6:03You have to crawl a little bit just to
- 6:04get to it.
- 6:06I was going to open it, but Rachel
- 6:07stopped me.
- 6:09She was scared that if I opened it,
- 6:10someone might be in there.
- 6:12I told her that there wasn't a chance of
- 6:14that happening, but I was secretly
- 6:15terrified.
- 6:17Just to be safe, Rachel went upstairs
- 6:19and I grabbed my bat.
- 6:21I slowly opened the door to the crawl
- 6:23space.
- 6:25I still can't believe what I saw when I
- 6:26opened the door.
- 6:28Inside the crawl space was an old, dirty
- 6:30throw pillow, a small fleece blanket,
- 6:33and some empty food wrappers.
- 6:36Well, it was a lot of empty food
- 6:37wrappers.
- 6:39But even more disturbing and terrifying
- 6:40than that
- 6:42was the other thing I found in there.
- 6:44Inside the small secret crawl space was
- 6:46one of our family photo albums.
- 6:49Rachel loves to take photos of
- 6:50everything and she prints all of her
- 6:52pictures out and puts them in photo
- 6:53albums.
- 6:54The photos in this album were
- 6:55specifically from the first few years we
- 6:57dated.
- 6:59I grabbed the photo album and ran out of
- 7:01there.
- 7:02I told Rachel to get out of the house
- 7:03and drive to her parents just in case.
- 7:06I stayed behind and called the police.
- 7:09When they arrived,
- 7:10they searched the entire house and
- 7:12didn't find anyone either.
- 7:14I wanted Rachel to stay at her parents'
- 7:15house that night just in case whoever
- 7:17this was reappeared, but she insisted on
- 7:19sleeping at home with me.
- 7:21She slept on the couch in the living
- 7:22room and I basically stayed awake all
- 7:24night waiting to hear something, but for
- 7:26the first time since moving into the
- 7:28house, I didn't hear anything that
- 7:30night.
- 7:31The next day, I ended up sealing the
- 7:33crawl space door shut, changing all the
- 7:35locks in the house, and installing two
- 7:37motion cameras outside.
- 7:39We never had another incident in the
- 7:41house after that.
- 7:42We currently still live here and
- 7:43Rachel's pregnant with our second child.
- 7:46That's what made me think of the story
- 7:47again.
- 7:48Now that it's been several years since
- 7:49all this, when I reflect on what I found
- 7:51that day,
- 7:53I can't help but come to the conclusion
- 7:54that someone was living down there in
- 7:55that room, at least for a few nights
- 7:58while we were in the house.
- 8:00I guess in hindsight, if we had that
- 8:02home inspection,
- 8:03maybe we would have known about the
- 8:04room.
- 8:06I have no idea why they had our photos
- 8:08and I don't think I want to know.
- 8:10One thing that freaks me out more than
- 8:11anything is that Rachel swears that she
- 8:13saw someone standing in the doorway that
- 8:15night and that it wasn't her
- 8:16imagination.
- 8:18I don't know the reason why they decided
- 8:20to just up and leave,
- 8:21but I'm happy they did.
- 8:34In the summer before going into eighth
- 8:36grade,
- 8:36>> [music]
- 8:36>> I experienced one of the most horrifying
- 8:38weekends of my life that I still can't
- 8:40explain.
- 8:41At that time in my life, I didn't have a
- 8:43lot of friends.
- 8:45I would spend most of my time with my
- 8:46cousin Roddy. He would usually come to
- 8:48stay overnight at my house since he
- 8:50lived in a small apartment with my aunt.
- 8:52He liked coming over to my house just
- 8:54because we had a lot more freedom.
- 8:56During that summer vacation, my aunt and
- 8:58her fiance bought a new house.
- 9:01Roddy was excited that he would finally
- 9:02have a big enough space that I could
- 9:04stay over there for once.
- 9:06Once they moved into the new house, we
- 9:08set up a plan for me to stay over there
- 9:09for the entire weekend.
- 9:11We were pumped to play video games all
- 9:13weekend and just eat a disgusting amount
- 9:15of food.
- 9:16I didn't care about much else at that
- 9:17time in my life.
- 9:19In the late afternoon on a Friday,
- 9:21my mom dropped me off at the house after
- 9:23she got out of work.
- 9:25The house was unfortunately not around
- 9:26the corner.
- 9:28It took about 45 minutes to get [music]
- 9:29there, but it was awesome once I
- 9:31arrived.
- 9:33The house was in the middle of nowhere,
- 9:34which I found pretty cool.
- 9:36It was also a massive house.
- 9:38It was older and a little run-down, but
- 9:40still a huge house.
- 9:42One of the things that Robbie loved
- 9:44about the new house was how much land
- 9:45they had.
- 9:47The backyard [music] was a massive
- 9:48field, and beyond the field was a bunch
- 9:50of trees and forested land.
- 9:52The first thing Robbie did when I got
- 9:54there was give me the tour.
- 9:56I'm not kidding when I say that I was
- 9:57genuinely concerned I might get lost in
- 9:59the house later.
- 10:01Not only was it a huge house, but it was
- 10:03also like a maze.
- 10:05The house had three separate staircases
- 10:07that led upstairs and two that led to
- 10:08the basement.
- 10:10It had so many rooms that I didn't even
- 10:12bother to count them.
- 10:14It was one of those old houses that I
- 10:16feel like they don't even make houses
- 10:17like that anymore.
- 10:19I remember feeling almost jealous that
- 10:21Robbie got to live here.
- 10:23It was like he had his own wing of the
- 10:24house.
- 10:26After Robbie gave me the tour, we went
- 10:28back into the kitchen where my mom and
- 10:29aunt were still talking.
- 10:31I remember hearing my aunt say to my mom
- 10:33that they had way too much room in the
- 10:34house for just the three of them,
- 10:36but they couldn't pass up the deal.
- 10:39I didn't care much for the reason, so I
- 10:41didn't stick around to hear why it was
- 10:42so cheap.
- 10:43Instead, Robbie and I went outside to
- 10:45throw the football [music] around.
- 10:47We threw the ball around for a while and
- 10:49then went inside when my mom was
- 10:50leaving.
- 10:52At the same time, my aunt's fiance was
- 10:54getting home with pizza and wings.
- 10:56After we ate, we went to Robbie's huge
- 10:59bedroom and started on our video game
- 11:00marathon.
- 11:02We played for hours. I'm not sure of the
- 11:04exact time, but it was late when we
- 11:06finally decided to pass out and go to
- 11:08sleep.
- 11:10Robbie's room was big enough that he had
- 11:11a bed on each side of the room, so I
- 11:13didn't have to sleep on the floor.
- 11:16The bed I was sleeping in was right next
- 11:17to the closet.
- 11:19We must have both been tired because we
- 11:21fell asleep right away.
- 11:23I don't know how long I was sleeping,
- 11:24but I don't think it was very long.
- 11:27I'm not even sure how or why I woke up,
- 11:29but I was was
- 11:31I sat up in bed and looked around the
- 11:33room.
- 11:34It was mostly dark in there.
- 11:36He had this blue light from his computer
- 11:37that was giving off some light and that
- 11:39was about it.
- 11:41When I put my head back down on the
- 11:42pillow,
- 11:43I noticed that the closet door was now
- 11:45open.
- 11:46When I got into bed originally, I was
- 11:48sure that the door was closed or at
- 11:50least mostly closed.
- 11:52Now it was wide open.
- 11:54I whispered over to Robbie to see if he
- 11:56was awake.
- 11:57I figured that maybe he woke up and
- 11:59grabbed a sweatshirt or something from
- 12:00the closet.
- 12:02Robbie mumbled something as if he was
- 12:03half asleep when I whispered his [music]
- 12:05name.
- 12:06I sat there for a few minutes unable to
- 12:08fully relax.
- 12:10I wasn't scared. I just felt like
- 12:11something was off and [snorts] with the
- 12:13door open, I didn't feel great.
- 12:15I worked up the courage to get back up
- 12:17and close the closet door.
- 12:19As I was shutting the door, I swear I
- 12:22thought I heard someone whisper, "Hey."
- 12:25I shut the door so fast and ran back to
- 12:27the bed.
- 12:28I was awake for almost the rest of the
- 12:29night.
- 12:31I couldn't calm my nerves.
- 12:33It didn't make any sense for somebody to
- 12:34be in that closet.
- 12:36It took the entire night, but I
- 12:38convinced myself that my imagination and
- 12:40being in the dark room just played a
- 12:41trick on my mind.
- 12:43In the morning, I finally fell back
- 12:45asleep.
- 12:46It didn't last long because Robbie woke
- 12:48me up because his mom made breakfast.
- 12:51While we were eating, Robbie was talking
- 12:53about all the stuff we were going to do
- 12:54that day.
- 12:55I felt bad because I could barely focus
- 12:57on what he was saying.
- 12:59I was so tired from the previous night.
- 13:02I will say that the tiredness didn't
- 13:04last very long.
- 13:05Once I ate and showered, I was starting
- 13:07to feel like myself again.
- 13:10Nothing of note happened during the day.
- 13:12That night, my aunt had a few of her
- 13:14friends over and they brought over their
- 13:16kids who were roughly the same age as
- 13:17us.
- 13:19We decided to play hide and seek in the
- 13:20big house.
- 13:21>> [music]
- 13:22>> I don't know if there is like an
- 13:23official rulebook for hide and seek, but
- 13:25we played a version of the game where
- 13:26one person is it. And when they find
- 13:28someone, they have to physically tag
- 13:30them, and then that person is also it
- 13:32until there's one survivor left.
- 13:34It was fun, and we could only play this
- 13:36game on nights like this when several
- 13:38people were able to play.
- 13:40There were seven of us playing. When we
- 13:42started playing, I wasn't designated as
- 13:44it, so I was able to hide.
- 13:47The only rules we established were that
- 13:48we had to be in the house, no hiding in
- 13:51the living room, which is where all the
- 13:52parents were,
- 13:53>> [music]
- 13:53>> and no one was allowed to hide in my
- 13:54aunt's bedroom.
- 13:56We shut that door so everyone couldn't
- 13:57get confused in the big house.
- 14:00I went into one of the unused rooms to
- 14:01hide.
- 14:03Inside the room was a bunch of office
- 14:05equipment and boxes.
- 14:06My aunt's fiance was going to make this
- 14:08room his office.
- 14:10I went into the closet in that room to
- 14:11hide.
- 14:12Hanging in that closet were several of
- 14:14his coats.
- 14:15I thought it was perfect because I could
- 14:17literally hide between the coats and be
- 14:18completely hidden.
- 14:20I left the closet door cracked open so I
- 14:22could peek through the opening and see
- 14:23if anyone came into the room.
- 14:25Several minutes passed, and no one came
- 14:27into the room.
- 14:29I wasn't overly concerned because the
- 14:31house was so big. It would probably take
- 14:33a while to look everywhere.
- 14:35Then, I heard the office door creak
- 14:37open.
- 14:38I looked through the cracked door, and I
- 14:40didn't see anyone.
- 14:42From my vantage point, I was able to see
- 14:44the entire room, so I couldn't figure
- 14:45out why the door opened and nobody was
- 14:47there.
- 14:48I looked away, and then I heard
- 14:50footsteps walking around the room.
- 14:52I looked through the door opening again,
- 14:54and still nobody was there.
- 14:57It was the craziest thing.
- 14:59It sounded like the footsteps were
- 15:00coming from right outside the door.
- 15:02I ducked back down in the closet.
- 15:05It didn't make sense to me, but someone
- 15:07was clearly right near the door,
- 15:09even if I couldn't see them.
- 15:11I backed up against the wall of the
- 15:12closet door and tried to remain hidden.
- 15:15I still wasn't scared.
- 15:17Even though I couldn't explain what was
- 15:18happening, I figured it still had to be
- 15:20someone from the game.
- 15:21>> [music]
- 15:22>> I was holding my hand over my mouth
- 15:23trying to make as little noise as
- 15:25possible.
- 15:26The footsteps now sounded like they were
- 15:28directly outside the closet door.
- 15:30Then I heard it.
- 15:32A soft whisper from the other side of
- 15:33the door.
- 15:35All it said was,
- 15:37"I see you."
- 15:39I was completely frozen.
- 15:41I didn't recognize that voice.
- 15:43I just stood there waiting for the door
- 15:44to open, but it never did.
- 15:47I don't know how long we had the
- 15:48standoff, but it felt like several
- 15:50minutes at least.
- 15:51During that time, I heard heavy
- 15:53breathing coming from the other side of
- 15:54the door.
- 15:56But they never said anything else.
- 15:58>> [panting]
- 15:58>> You know when you can just feel someone
- 16:00standing there?
- 16:01That's what I felt in this moment.
- 16:04Then, without warning, the footsteps
- 16:06left the room fast.
- 16:08It was like they ran away.
- 16:10It was silent after that.
- 16:12I didn't hear anything except my own
- 16:14breathing.
- 16:15I was too scared to leave.
- 16:18While I was standing there, the closet
- 16:19door slowly opened on its own.
- 16:22The loud creaking sound was like nails
- 16:24on a chalkboard for me in that moment.
- 16:26Once the door was open, nobody was
- 16:28there.
- 16:29I was just standing in the doorway like
- 16:31an idiot.
- 16:32That's when Robbie ran by the room,
- 16:34shouted that he saw me, and ran to tag
- 16:36me.
- 16:37Even after I got tagged, I still just
- 16:39stood there trying to process what just
- 16:41happened.
- 16:42It didn't make any sense to me.
- 16:45I came to my senses a moment later and
- 16:46continued playing the game.
- 16:48I didn't want everyone there to think
- 16:50that I was afraid, even though I was
- 16:51scared out of my mind now.
- 16:53We played for a while after that, but I
- 16:55made sure I hid in easy-to-find spots
- 16:57that were close to other people.
- 16:59I didn't want to be alone.
- 17:01That night, after everyone left, Robbie
- 17:03fell asleep right away.
- 17:05I didn't want to go anywhere near
- 17:07[music] the bed that was next to the
- 17:08closet door from the night before.
- 17:10I forced myself to stay awake and play
- 17:12video games.
- 17:13At like 3:20 in the morning,
- 17:15I'll never forget that exact time.
- 17:17I heard a creaking sound.
- 17:19I looked over from the TV where I was
- 17:21sitting and the closet door was just
- 17:23opening on its own again.
- 17:25I just sat there and watched the door
- 17:27open.
- 17:29Once it was fully open, I couldn't see
- 17:31anything inside the closet other than
- 17:32darkness.
- 17:34Then I heard the breathing again.
- 17:36It almost sounded intentionally loud.
- 17:39I backed up against [music] Robbie's bed
- 17:40which was on the other side of the room.
- 17:43I sat there like a statue and stared
- 17:45into that dark closet for the rest of
- 17:46the night just waiting for something or
- 17:48someone to jump out at me, but nothing
- 17:50ever did.
- 17:52On Saturday morning, I called my mom and
- 17:54told her to come pick me up early
- 17:56because I didn't feel well.
- 17:58I was supposed to stay all day, but I
- 18:00just wanted to get out of this house.
- 18:02When my mom picked me up, she asked me
- 18:04how the weekend was and I told her the
- 18:06truth.
- 18:07I told her I didn't like it there and
- 18:09that I had this horrible feeling all
- 18:10weekend that someone was watching me.
- 18:13I saw my mom make a weird face.
- 18:15She asked me if I heard my aunt or her
- 18:17fiance talk about how they got the house
- 18:19so cheap and I didn't.
- 18:21She shook her head and told me never
- 18:22mind.
- 18:24It was years later, several years after
- 18:26I graduated from high school, that the
- 18:27story came up again.
- 18:29That's when my mom told me for the first
- 18:31time that my aunt was able to buy the
- 18:33house so cheaply because, apparently,
- 18:35some brutal crime involving murder
- 18:37happened in the house 10 years before my
- 18:39aunt bought it
- 18:40and it had been empty ever since.
- 18:43My mom thought that I must have
- 18:44overheard my aunt telling someone that
- 18:45and that gave me some vivid nightmares
- 18:47that one weekend when I stayed there.
- 18:50However, these experiences I had were
- 18:52not nightmares. This was real.
- 18:55There was no doubt in my mind that I
- 18:56heard the voice, the breathing, and the
- 18:58footsteps. All of it.
- 19:00This wasn't in my head. This happened.
- 19:03Now, as an adult [music] in my late 20s,
- 19:06I still can't explain it.
- 19:08I never stayed overnight at Robbie's
- 19:09house again after that night.
- 19:11I had been there a few times since, but
- 19:13always went home at night.
- 19:15To my knowledge, Robbie never
- 19:17experienced anything like that, and if
- 19:18he did,
- 19:20he never shared it with me.
- 19:33This story is weird and a bit
- 19:35unsettling.
- 19:36I don't even know if I would consider it
- 19:38scary or just outright disturbing.
- 19:41Maybe even a little sad.
- 19:43I'll start by saying that I'm not going
- 19:44to be using any real names in the story,
- 19:46just to protect the privacy of certain
- 19:48people, just in case.
- 19:50For my entire life, my mom's best friend
- 19:52has been a woman named Tammy.
- 19:54She's a successful real estate agent in
- 19:56the area.
- 19:57She helped my parents get a great deal
- 19:59on the house I grew up in.
- 20:01She's like a magician when it comes to
- 20:02real estate.
- 20:04Fast forward to a couple of years ago,
- 20:05and Tammy agreed to help me find my
- 20:07first house.
- 20:09It just so happened that she was about
- 20:10to put a house on the market that used
- 20:11to belong to the father of one of her
- 20:13oldest friends.
- 20:14He had passed away about a year before
- 20:16this, and the house was empty for a
- 20:17while before that.
- 20:19He didn't die in the house or anything
- 20:21like that, but the kids still kept the
- 20:22house in the family while the old man
- 20:24was in a retirement home.
- 20:26It's just that [music] the kids don't
- 20:27live in the state anymore, and they
- 20:28didn't want to sell the house until he
- 20:30officially passed.
- 20:32Once he died and the kids finally got
- 20:33around to selling the house, they left
- 20:35it in Tammy's capable hands.
- 20:37Being the woman she is, she asked if I
- 20:39was interested in looking at the house
- 20:40first.
- 20:42Long story short, Tammy got a great deal
- 20:44on the house, and not long after, I
- 20:46officially became a first-time
- 20:47homeowner.
- 20:49Since it smelled old and musty in there,
- 20:51I decided to do some renovations before
- 20:53I officially moved in.
- 20:54I wanted to get the essential rooms done
- 20:56first so I could move in, and then I
- 20:58could slowly work on the rest of the
- 20:59house.
- 21:01One afternoon, after fixing up the
- 21:02kitchen, I decided to just walk around
- 21:04the house and get a feel for the place.
- 21:07It hadn't quite sunk in yet that I owned
- 21:08this house.
- 21:10One area of the house that I had barely
- 21:11seen was the attic.
- 21:13It was one of those drawstrings on the
- 21:15ceiling that you pulled, and when you
- 21:16did, a wooden ladder lowered leading to
- 21:19a small attic.
- 21:21I knew it was there. I just never really
- 21:22cared to go up there since it was gross
- 21:24and covered in cobwebs and who knows
- 21:26what else.
- 21:27On that afternoon, I decided to go up
- 21:29there and see if there was any water
- 21:31damage or any other type of issue that I
- 21:33would need to address.
- 21:35While I was looking around, I stepped on
- 21:36a loose floorboard.
- 21:38I was about to just nail it down when I
- 21:40noticed something underneath it.
- 21:43I pulled up the board and found a
- 21:44notebook, some keys, and a small device
- 21:47that I later realized was a voice
- 21:48recorder.
- 21:49I remember thinking that this was so
- 21:51cool when I pulled them out. It was like
- 21:53finding a relic from the past in the
- 21:55house.
- 21:56I went back to the kitchen and tried to
- 21:57play the tape that was in the recorder,
- 21:59but it wouldn't work.
- 22:01It didn't take me long to realize that
- 22:02it ran on batteries, and the batteries
- 22:04were dead.
- 22:06I grabbed some new ones for my truck and
- 22:08tried to play the recording again.
- 22:10It worked. It was the voice of an old
- 22:12man.
- 22:13At first, it was kind of sweet. He was
- 22:15just recording his voice saying things
- 22:17like his name, the date, and that he
- 22:19wanted to hear what his voice sounded
- 22:20like.
- 22:21Then the recordings took a hard turn and
- 22:23got weird.
- 22:24He sounded frantic all of a sudden. He
- 22:27kept saying that he doesn't know why
- 22:28they won't just leave him alone,
- 22:30that he was in danger, that nobody would
- 22:32help him.
- 22:33He kept mentioning his one daughter,
- 22:35I'll call her Claire, and saying that
- 22:37she wouldn't believe him.
- 22:38He would go from crying in the recording
- 22:40to screaming at the top of his lungs to
- 22:42laughing uncontrollably.
- 22:44It was unhinged.
- 22:46I stopped recording and started to flip
- 22:48through the notebook.
- 22:50It was almost the same as the recording.
- 22:52By that, I mean it started normal
- 22:54enough.
- 22:55It almost looked like a journal entry.
- 22:57It had the date, the time, and then just
- 22:58a small passage.
- 23:00Simple things like, "Tonight I ate a
- 23:02hamburger. It was delicious.
- 23:05After the small passage, that's where he
- 23:07would write a timestamp.
- 23:09I know that seems silly, but that's
- 23:10literally the kind of stuff it said.
- 23:12But just like the recordings, as I
- 23:14continued to flip through the notebook,
- 23:16it started to get crazier.
- 23:18One entry said, "I want to eat Justin's
- 23:20arm." Timestamped 1:18 a.m. on November
- 23:2316th.
- 23:25I have no idea who Justin is or why the
- 23:27entries started to go off the rails like
- 23:29this.
- 23:30I started listening to the recordings
- 23:31again, and they just kept getting darker
- 23:33and weirder.
- 23:35In one of the recordings, he started
- 23:36talking about how the evil woman comes
- 23:38to visit him every night, and she won't
- 23:40leave him alone.
- 23:42After that recording, there were a lot
- 23:44of recordings of just mumbling,
- 23:45screaming, or laughing.
- 23:47I started to put the pieces together in
- 23:49my head.
- 23:50This poor man had lost his mind, and
- 23:52that's probably why his kids put him in
- 23:54a home until he passed away.
- 23:56Then I heard the final recording, and I
- 23:58wasn't so sure anymore.
- 24:00In the last recording, he sounded
- 24:02defeated and out of breath.
- 24:04He apologized for everything wrong and
- 24:06horrible he'd done in his life.
- 24:08He didn't give any details about that.
- 24:10Then he said the evil woman comes every
- 24:12night now, and she won't leave him
- 24:14alone.
- 24:15He then said that she can by no means
- 24:17find out what he locked away.
- 24:19That's what she's after.
- 24:21I heard him jingle the keys near the
- 24:23recorder.
- 24:24I assumed they were the keys I found
- 24:26under the floorboards.
- 24:28After that, he stopped talking for a few
- 24:29seconds, and you couldn't hear anything
- 24:31except dead air.
- 24:33I was just about to turn the recorder
- 24:35off when he whispered into the device
- 24:38that she's here now.
- 24:39Tell my children I love them.
- 24:42Then, right before the recorder shuts
- 24:44off, you can hear the cackle of a woman.
- 24:47It's only for a second or two before it
- 24:49gets cut off,
- 24:50but it was clear as day.
- 24:52It was an unnerving laugh, and clearly
- 24:54not the voice of this elderly man.
- 24:57I listened to that last part of the
- 24:58recording about 15 times just so I could
- 25:00be certain that that's what I heard.
- 25:03After listening,
- 25:04I went to the last passage of the
- 25:05notebook that was filled out.
- 25:07All it said was, "Please, please, not
- 25:10tonight."
- 25:12Followed by the word, "No." dozens of
- 25:14times.
- 25:15Then it was timestamped at 3:39 a.m. on
- 25:18December 26th.
- 25:20I called Tammy after all of this and
- 25:22told her what I found.
- 25:23She came over and listened for herself.
- 25:26It made her feel uncomfortable and
- 25:27uneasy because she knew this man.
- 25:30She called his daughter and told her
- 25:31what I found in the attic, and the
- 25:33daughter was a bit creeped out.
- 25:35When they finally admitted him to a
- 25:36home, she said that the father she knew
- 25:38was barely left.
- 25:39He didn't talk much, and when he did, it
- 25:42was nothing indicating any of this
- 25:43stuff.
- 25:44She said the timestamp in the notebook
- 25:46was especially unsettling for her
- 25:48because it was the next day, December
- 25:5027th, that she came home to visit for
- 25:52the holidays with her family.
- 25:54And that's when he was basically
- 25:55unresponsive on the couch.
- 25:57If you can believe it, somehow this
- 25:59story gets even stranger.
- 26:01After they found him unresponsive on the
- 26:03couch, they took him to the hospital
- 26:05assuming he had a stroke,
- 26:07but the doctors were never able to fully
- 26:08explain what happened to him.
- 26:10Why he had such a cognitive decline and
- 26:13why he basically was a shell of a man at
- 26:15the end of his life.
- 26:16There wasn't a medical reason why, which
- 26:18made this harder for his family to
- 26:19accept and understand.
- 26:21What I didn't realize then was that
- 26:23Tammy didn't tell her about the horrible
- 26:25laugh that was at the end of the
- 26:26recording.
- 26:27She didn't want to upset her more.
- 26:30I didn't agree. So, a few days later, I
- 26:32called the woman back up and told her
- 26:34about the end of the recording.
- 26:36Well, Tammy was right.
- 26:38This upset her so much that she flew
- 26:40back to town and asked if she could have
- 26:41the recordings, the notebook, and the
- 26:43keys, which I of course handed over.
- 26:46She thanked me for them and told me if
- 26:47she ever found any answers, she would
- 26:49let me know.
- 26:50I doubt she will, and if by some chance
- 26:52she does find answers,
- 26:54maybe I'll write an updated version of
- 26:55the story.
- 26:57I know the easy answer is to just say
- 26:59the man was clearly losing it, and this
- 27:00was just a record of him mentally
- 27:02declining.
- 27:03But if you could have seen the
- 27:04daughter's reaction to the laugh on the
- 27:05recording, you would also have that gut
- 27:08feeling like I do that something isn't
- 27:09right about this situation.
- 27:12Hopefully one day that family will get
- 27:14the answers they desire.
