- 0:02Welcome to lesson one of the interior
- 0:04design playbook. I'm Meg. I'm an
- 0:05interior designer and visual media
- 0:07specialist right here in the United
- 0:08States. And I'm so excited that you're
- 0:09here. In this first lesson, we're going
- 0:11to be setting the foundation for
- 0:12everything that we're going to build
- 0:13together in this course. You'll get a
- 0:14highle overview of the essential
- 0:16resources interior designers like you
- 0:18need to deliver consistent,
- 0:20professional, and client ready work,
- 0:21including a full project documentation
- 0:23set with drawing schedules and mood
- 0:25boards. Now, along the way, I want to
- 0:26introduce you to three core playbook
- 0:28strategies that will help you streamline
- 0:29your process, scale your studio, and
- 0:31succeed. The first strategy that we're
- 0:33going to talk about is how to centralize
- 0:34your assets, and streamline your
- 0:35workflow. We'll do this by working from
- 0:37start to finish using one tool, which
- 0:38cuts out any app switching and reduces
- 0:40your software cost. Next, we're going to
- 0:42systemize our drawing set creation.
- 0:43We'll do this by using reusable
- 0:45templates and custom libraries tailored
- 0:46to your projects and design style. And
- 0:48the third strategy that we'll talk about
- 0:50is how to collaborate more efficiently.
- 0:51Whether that's with employees,
- 0:52teammates, clients, consultants, you'll
- 0:54all be able to work in one shared space
- 0:56that is always live updated. Now, to
- 0:58showcase all these strategies, I will be
- 0:59using Rayon Design where I've already
- 1:01created each sheet in the set that we're
- 1:02going to review today. All the way from
- 1:04precise technical drawings to stylized
- 1:06presentations with textures, colors,
- 1:08mood boards, smart specification tables,
- 1:10and more. Rayon is the all-in-one
- 1:11platform built specifically for interior
- 1:13designers. So, you can spend less time
- 1:15jumping from tool to tool and more time
- 1:16on your design. Before we dive in, make
- 1:18sure that you open that free template
- 1:19that's linked down below for you. It is
- 1:21fully editable so you can follow along,
- 1:22customize it for your own projects and
- 1:24start building a scalable professional
- 1:26system for your studio today. Okay,
- 1:28let's dive in. Now, we're here in Rayon
- 1:30and I have got my entire set open here
- 1:33for us to just kind of walk through and
- 1:35just to kind of talk about these
- 1:37different sheets that I have set up. And
- 1:39then while we're talking, I'm also going
- 1:41to mention those three core strategies
- 1:44that really streamline your process. So,
- 1:46this is kind of what Rayon looks like
- 1:48right when you open it. It is a
- 1:49web-based tool, which is one of my
- 1:51favorite parts of Rayon, which means
- 1:53that you can pretty much access it
- 1:54anywhere, like from wherever. This is
- 1:56your toolbar over here. This is where
- 1:58we're going to access some of those
- 2:00layers and blocks and that kind of thing
- 2:02later. Down here are some drawing tools.
- 2:04And then over here is kind of where we
- 2:06modify things. But like I said, in this
- 2:08lesson, I just want to kind of walk you
- 2:10through what a typical design
- 2:12documentation set could look like in
- 2:13Rayon. Starting over here with our cover
- 2:16page. As an interior designer, this is
- 2:19usually where I personally like to add a
- 2:21nice rendering, like an interior
- 2:22rendering, just to get us off on the
- 2:24right foot, that like wow factor. For
- 2:26this specific example, this is an entire
- 2:28house design. So, we have um an exterior
- 2:32rendering here on the cover page. And
- 2:35this is just kind of your chance to wow
- 2:37the client with the cover sheet. And
- 2:39then when we move down here, you can
- 2:41also set up legends and give a little
- 2:44sneak peek into what these different
- 2:47sheets in this set are going to look
- 2:49like. And again, we also have that same
- 2:52rendering from the cover sheet just um
- 2:54with a little bit more opacity just to
- 2:56kind of tie it in, which I really,
- 2:57really love. Site plans aren't
- 2:59necessarily going to be a huge part of
- 3:00your interior design workflow, but just
- 3:03to show you what you can do here in
- 3:04Rayon. This just kind of gives an
- 3:07overview of the site showing some of
- 3:09the, you know, sun studies and that kind
- 3:12of thing. So, if I double click in here,
- 3:13you can see that these are all model
- 3:15lines. And the nice part is that you can
- 3:17import this information from other
- 3:19resources. And that actually kind of
- 3:21brings me to the first core strategy
- 3:23that I want to talk about with you guys.
- 3:25It's that you can literally centralize
- 3:27your entire workflow by just using this
- 3:29one tool. And that one tool being rayon.
- 3:32So, one of the biggest times savers in
- 3:34your process is going to be eliminating
- 3:36that switch between multiple tools. Now,
- 3:39of course, there are a lot of other
- 3:40designers or consultants that will work
- 3:42in other tools, but the nice thing is
- 3:44that this communicates really well with
- 3:45those tools if you need to, and you
- 3:48don't have to pay extra for the soft,
- 3:50the extra software subscription. So, if
- 3:52you're already juggling between multiple
- 3:54tools, you can just stop, review your
- 3:56current workflow, and ask yourself, how
- 3:58can we clean this up? And in rayon you
- 4:00can actually go from start to finish in
- 4:02a single platform. So what I was talking
- 4:05about here is that you can actually
- 4:06import files like PDFs, DWGs or even
- 4:10honestly sketches and use those as the
- 4:12foundation for your drawing set. So from
- 4:14here everything that happens is just
- 4:16going to be in this one place. So your
- 4:19drafting, your styling, your
- 4:20annotations, your page layout,
- 4:22presentation, there's no need to jump
- 4:24between AutoCAD, Illustrator, Photoshop,
- 4:27like any of those other file sharing
- 4:29platforms. So by centralizing your
- 4:31workflow, you can really simplify that
- 4:32project management. Um, again, reduce
- 4:35software costs and then make your
- 4:36process just more efficient from day
- 4:38one. Let's move on to our next sheet. Up
- 4:39here, we have our floor plan here. So
- 4:42the nice thing about Rayon also is that
- 4:44these are all just like presentation
- 4:46space here. Um but in the actual like
- 4:48drawing space like on the actual drawing
- 4:50canvas uh you just draw it once and then
- 4:52you can communicate it different ways on
- 4:54different presentation pages. So like
- 4:56this here is a very basic communication
- 4:58of a floor plan. You know we just have
- 5:00like our rooms and our walls and our
- 5:02dimensions. Um that's just kind of what
- 5:04this sheet does. Now if we move down
- 5:07though you can see that we start getting
- 5:08a little bit more stylized um with the
- 5:10floor plan. This is a lighting plan. You
- 5:13can see that we start showing some
- 5:14materials, some entourage. And what I
- 5:17love about Rayon is that they make it
- 5:19super easy. So, they have all these
- 5:21libraries of different blocks and, you
- 5:23know, typical symbols set up. So, you're
- 5:25not like starting from scratch every
- 5:27single time. And that kind of brings me
- 5:28to strategy number two, which is how we
- 5:31are going to systemize our drawing set
- 5:34creation with those templates and custom
- 5:36libraries. So, if you are starting from
- 5:38a blank page every single time when you
- 5:40start a new project, let's stop doing
- 5:42that. Okay? That approach drains your
- 5:44time and stalls your growth. And as a
- 5:46business owner, you need to build on the
- 5:48accumulated experience and resources of
- 5:50your studio. Like, you've got better
- 5:52things to do. So, each project then gets
- 5:54faster, smoother, more scalable from
- 5:56there. And now, here's the golden tip,
- 5:58though. You want to create a custom
- 6:00drawing set template. And once you've
- 6:02structured your model with title blocks,
- 6:04drawing sheets, annotation styles, and
- 6:06layout standards that you can use on
- 6:08every single project, you just have to
- 6:10save it as a reusable template. And from
- 6:12that point on, now every single project
- 6:13that you start starts with a solid
- 6:15foundation. Like you're not reinventing
- 6:17the wheel every time. And like I said,
- 6:19Ray makes this even easier with these
- 6:20built-in style and block libraries that
- 6:23are fully customizable. Whether it's
- 6:25your studio's title block symbols like
- 6:28these little light symbols or furniture
- 6:30blocks, like all of this furniture that
- 6:32you see here, whether it's in floor
- 6:33plan, elevation, side view, you can
- 6:35standardize all of this. And the same
- 6:37goes for like your fonts, your line
- 6:39weights, your textures, your hatches,
- 6:41and in the end, every single drawing
- 6:42then ends up looking super polished,
- 6:44cohesive, and professional while saving
- 6:46your team countless hours of that
- 6:48repetitive setup. So, all these blocks
- 6:50that you're seeing here, these are all
- 6:52just standard blocks that are set up
- 6:54over here in their block library. And
- 6:56like I said, one of my favorite parts is
- 6:57that they have these different views set
- 6:59up for different blocks. And that makes
- 7:01it so much easier for me personally. I'm
- 7:04able to create a set, like a
- 7:05documentation set. That's actually super
- 7:08impressive, but it's like it didn't
- 7:10really like I didn't really spend that
- 7:11much extra time doing it. So, let's keep
- 7:14moving here. That was our lighting plan,
- 7:15and we got a glimpse at our furniture.
- 7:17Um, this is actually like a true
- 7:18furniture plan here. And again, you can
- 7:21see here some of the materials we're
- 7:23starting to identify here. And I also
- 7:25just love that there's a little bit of,
- 7:28you know, shadow on the walls. It gives
- 7:30so much more depth. And all these
- 7:32materials are totally customizable when
- 7:34you are working in your floor plan. Um,
- 7:36you can actually just like change the
- 7:38hatch, the different hatch. Like if I
- 7:39double click here, this is, you know,
- 7:41like a wood floor, but that's totally
- 7:43editable with different uh styles and
- 7:46patterns and materials. And you can do
- 7:49realistic. You can do like basic
- 7:50hatches. It's honestly like just up to
- 7:53you. And that's what I love is
- 7:54everything is just so customizable here.
- 7:56And then once you kind of lock down your
- 7:58style, you can just again reuse that on
- 8:00all of your drawing sets. So moving on
- 8:02again, let's go up here. And this is
- 8:04where we start to see some elevations.
- 8:07And this is what I was talking about
- 8:08with the blocks um that they have.
- 8:10They're not only blocks for floor plans.
- 8:12Um but you can see like this guy is in
- 8:15elevation. And there's just so many
- 8:18different types uh set up here. Like
- 8:21we've got trees, we've got furniture.
- 8:24And again, you can apply those same kind
- 8:26of like hatches to different surfaces
- 8:28here. Um so you know whether it's your
- 8:30roof or your wall, your siding, um
- 8:33whatever. And then let's move down.
- 8:36We've got some section cuts here. So,
- 8:38again, just telling the story a little
- 8:39bit more. Um, this is where that block
- 8:41library really comes in handy. Um, where
- 8:44you've got, you know, your elevation
- 8:46views, but also your floor plan views,
- 8:48so you can really keep things cohesive.
- 8:50So, you can see here, um, like we're
- 8:52dipping in the pool and we've got this
- 8:53little flamingo floaty. Um, and again,
- 8:56this just kind of like starts to tell
- 8:59the story even further. Um, so I really
- 9:02really love that aspect. Um, and then
- 9:04getting down to kind of like the bread
- 9:05and butter, I would say, for interior
- 9:06designers. This is kind of where I love
- 9:08to shine, where we kind of do more of
- 9:11like a floor plan mood board
- 9:13combination. So, again, this is where
- 9:15you really start to just tell that full
- 9:17story, start identifying different
- 9:19furniture pieces. You can do like call
- 9:21outs, you can do your little arrows, you
- 9:23can add like photos of furniture pieces
- 9:25here, and just really um start to
- 9:29explain everything really nicely. This
- 9:31is also totally collaborative. So, it's
- 9:33not just like, you know, you send these
- 9:35and it's done. It's actually very
- 9:37collaborative and not only just like for
- 9:39your team members, but also for clients.
- 9:41And that brings me to strategy number
- 9:43three where you can collaborate
- 9:44seamlessly with clients and consultants
- 9:46all in one shared workspace. So, I know
- 9:48that we all work in this really
- 9:50fast-paced um everchanging environment,
- 9:52right, with our employees, clients,
- 9:54consultants, suppliers. And if you've
- 9:55ever worked with outdated drawings or
- 9:57conflicting spec revisions, you know how
- 9:59things can fall out of sync so easily
- 10:01and then it's just like you're doing so
- 10:03much work when it could be so simple.
- 10:05And that's why having a live shared
- 10:07workspace is such a game changer. And
- 10:09Rayon is built for that real-time
- 10:11collaboration. So no more emailing files
- 10:13back and forth wondering, you know, who
- 10:15has the latest version. You and your
- 10:17team can actually just work together um
- 10:19on the same drawing set and at the same
- 10:20time. So contractors can leave comments,
- 10:23teammates can make edits, clients can
- 10:25review updates all in just this one
- 10:27place. And you can also create sharable
- 10:29presentation canvases. So clients can
- 10:31always have access to the most current
- 10:33version. And they don't have to download
- 10:35anything. Like I said, it's like totally
- 10:37web- based, so no software downloads. Um
- 10:40the communication is centralized between
- 10:41all parties. Um it helps the decisions
- 10:44move faster and then your project
- 10:45workflow is then ultimately smoother
- 10:47from start to finish. So over here,
- 10:49that's kind of what I was talking about,
- 10:50adding your comments. And this is open
- 10:52for everyone. So they can either add
- 10:55comments or like I said, team members
- 10:56can make adjustments and everything is
- 10:58going to update in live time. So just to
- 11:01kind of wrap up looking at this drawing
- 11:03set, let's take a look at some of these
- 11:05interior elevations over here. We've got
- 11:07a kitchen elevation. And again, it's
- 11:10just so nice that you can kind of like
- 11:11get a good idea of the materials without
- 11:13being hyper realistic. Um, just kind of
- 11:15like alluding to the fact that like,
- 11:17okay, like there's going to be a tile on
- 11:18the backsplash here or, you know, this
- 11:20cabinet's going to be this general
- 11:22color. And then you can always add in
- 11:23your detailed callouts as well on the
- 11:25same page um, as your elevation. And
- 11:28then kind of to tie in with those, you
- 11:31can do detailed sections in here as well
- 11:33if you're submitting to a contractor.
- 11:36And this is just kind of where you tell
- 11:38the construction um, story. I personally
- 11:40don't actually deal with a lot of this
- 11:42kind of stuff. I do a lot of more like
- 11:43for reference only, but I do love the
- 11:45fact that you are able to detail things
- 11:47if you need to. And just a few last
- 11:50pages here. Um, for my interior designer
- 11:52specifically, we can do more of just
- 11:54like a straight up mood board, not
- 11:55necessarily do any call outs and
- 11:57association with a floor plan. Just kind
- 11:59of like dropping your materials, maybe
- 12:01do a material legend. Um, give a little
- 12:03bit more specific like spec information
- 12:05here. And then lastly over here, this is
- 12:08where we can do um some more identifying
- 12:11of light fixtures, furniture. You can
- 12:14easily set up these tables and rayon. So
- 12:16you can add in your pictures and then
- 12:18add in your details. And again, since
- 12:20you have, you know, that easy
- 12:21communication feature, um this is where
- 12:24clients can give easy feedback or, you
- 12:26know, your teammates can easily edit if
- 12:28needed. Um and again, just some more
- 12:30different ways to display um some of
- 12:33this stuff. And lastly, just like we did
- 12:35with the sections, uh just an
- 12:36opportunity to do some more specific
- 12:39details, you know, for like walls,
- 12:40ceilings, anything that requires that
- 12:42extra detailed view, all just be created
- 12:45right here in Rayon. Today, you got a
- 12:46behind-the-scenes look at a complete
- 12:48interior design documentation set, plus
- 12:50the three core strategies that will help
- 12:51you streamline your process, scale your
- 12:53studio, and succeed with confidence. We
- 12:55talked about how to centralize your
- 12:56workflow with one tool to reduce
- 12:58friction and gain control. How to
- 12:59systemize your drawing set using
- 13:01templates and libraries that evolve with
- 13:03your studio and how to collaborate in
- 13:04real time to keep teammates, clients,
- 13:06and consultants all completely aligned.
- 13:08And the best part is you don't have to
- 13:10build everything from scratch. If you
- 13:11haven't already, make sure you download
- 13:12that free editable template below. This
- 13:14is your starting point for creating
- 13:15beautiful, consistent drawing sets that
- 13:17reflect your design style and support
- 13:19your business goals. If this lesson
- 13:20helped clarify your process or spark any
- 13:22new ideas, please leave a comment and
- 13:24let us know. And don't forget to like
- 13:25and subscribe so you don't miss any of
- 13:26the next lessons for the interior design
- 13:28playbook. Speaking of next lessons,
- 13:30those will be dedicated to helping you
- 13:31set up your drawing set in Rayon. And
- 13:33don't worry, we're going to show you
- 13:34exactly how to implement the playbook
- 13:35strategies into your own workflow. Until
- 13:37next time, keep designing smarter, not
- 13:39harder, friends.
