Full transcript
- 0:00in this video I'm going to give you the
- 0:02three storytelling techniques to move
- 0:03your stories from this to this let's go
- 0:06first take me start right into the
- 0:09action
- 0:10the biggest difference between great
- 0:12storytelles and beginner storytellers is
- 0:14that they bring us into the story from
- 0:16moment one they don't waste any time
- 0:19giving too much context they start their
- 0:22story right into the action you can do
- 0:24that by pretty much having your
- 0:26character do anything any type of action
- 0:28that can be walking biking reading you
- 0:32name it for example it's May 2019 dinuka
- 0:37steps into his manager's office and
- 0:39hands in the letter
- 0:41or about two weeks back I was on my bike
- 0:45singing out loud on Dancing Queen by
- 0:48ABBA
- 0:49do you see do you see what I did there
- 0:51by starting your story with forward
- 0:53momentum with these actions you
- 0:55immediately bring in your listeners into
- 0:57the story
- 0:59all right on to the next one if you
- 1:01master that skill you'll be in that top
- 1:03one percent of great storytellers
- 1:06second take look show don't tell
- 1:10the best stories they're emotional
- 1:12everyone agrees on that but what most
- 1:14people do is when they share a story
- 1:16they tell us how the character felt they
- 1:20use words like happy sad disappointed
- 1:23nervous well this is a great starting
- 1:25point we can do better than that let me
- 1:28give you two examples instead of saying
- 1:30my boss was very pleased say my boss
- 1:33woke up to me patted me on my back and
- 1:36looked at me with this big grin on his
- 1:38face or
- 1:41um instead of saying I was nervous say
- 1:44my legs started trembling my entire face
- 1:48turned red
- 1:50do you see the difference instead of
- 1:53telling the emotions you show the
- 1:55emotions show how the body how the face
- 1:57changes when you experience that emotion
- 2:00it's a tiny modification but it makes
- 2:02your story immediately more visual
- 2:04alright on to the last and my absolute
- 2:07favorite storytelling technique third
- 2:09technique use dialogue
- 2:12the best stories transport the listeners
- 2:16into the story's World your listeners
- 2:18should see the story in their heads they
- 2:21should feel the emotions they should
- 2:23experience the story as if it was
- 2:26happening to them now one of the most
- 2:28powerful techniques to do that is to use
- 2:30dialogue or the exact words that were
- 2:34used in that crucial moment of the story
- 2:36let me give you some examples instead of
- 2:39saying my mom was very disappointed say
- 2:42my mom looked at me and said Philip
- 2:45you're a disgrace
- 2:47or instead of instead of saying well my
- 2:51my client secured three millions of
- 2:54funding see
- 2:55my client called me and said
- 2:58crazy we did it we secured the three
- 3:01millions of funding thank you so much do
- 3:04you see the difference it's a small
- 3:06tweak in the wording but it makes a
- 3:08massive difference to how visual it is
- 3:11look these three story time techniques
- 3:14will help you spice up your story big
- 3:16time but you also may want to make sure
- 3:19that you include a few of these
- 3:20unexpected or surprise moments in your
- 3:23story to know exactly when to include
- 3:25them you may want to check out this next
- 3:27video in that video I shared my three
- 3:29lessons that I got from reading these 34
- 3:33books on storytelling see you there
