3 Petite Style Mistakes Making You SHORTER (& how to fix them) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00I'm 5'2 and these outfits, I used to
- 0:03think they were good until I realized
- 0:05they were making me look shorter,
- 0:07unbalanced, and just off. And if you're
- 0:11petite, you're probably making at least
- 0:13one of these mistakes, too. So, let me
- 0:15show you how to fix them. This video
- 0:16also features a few items from Petite
- 0:19Studios latest autumn collection, and
- 0:21I'll share more about them later. So
- 0:23many petite style tips say, "Don't wear
- 0:26this and avoid that." But what really
- 0:28matters is how you wear things. We are
- 0:31told all the time to avoid oversized
- 0:34clothing. But that's something I don't
- 0:36agree with at all. Which is why mistake
- 0:39number one is not knowing the difference
- 0:41between oversized and too big. Take this
- 0:44blazer for example. The sleeves are too
- 0:47long. They're covering most of my hands.
- 0:50The shoulders are kind of just like
- 0:52hanging off me. and the body and the
- 0:54length is both too wide and too long.
- 0:57Now, don't get me wrong, I have worn
- 0:59this jacket out loads, and there are
- 1:01ways to style it to make it work for us
- 1:03petite women, but objectively, there's
- 1:06no denying that this jacket is just two
- 1:09sizes too big. However, stay tuned to
- 1:11the end of the video where I'll show you
- 1:13exactly how I styled this piece to make
- 1:15it work for me. Now, compare that to
- 1:17this blazer, which has been cut
- 1:20deliberately oversized. The shoulders
- 1:22are slightly roomier, but in a way that
- 1:24still fits me. The length is comparable
- 1:27to the black blazer, but the body is
- 1:30still slim enough that it doesn't look
- 1:32too big. But I think the main thing that
- 1:35actually makes the biggest difference
- 1:37are the length of the sleeves. You can
- 1:40see that they stop at the appropriate
- 1:42length for my arms. Don't underestimate
- 1:44the power of a sleeve length. Showing
- 1:47your wrists or hands can stop an
- 1:49oversized item from feeling too big. It
- 1:52frames your arms and breaks up the bulk
- 1:55of fabric. And this creates a contrast
- 1:57between the oversized shape and your
- 2:00slimmer wrists or hands. It also adds
- 2:03intentionality behind a look. It makes
- 2:06it look more styled instead of I've just
- 2:10put this on and it's too big for me. And
- 2:12that's why you'll often see outfits like
- 2:15this with the jacket sleeves rolled up
- 2:17or the shirt sleeves rolled up and not
- 2:20just on petite people because it's such
- 2:22a simple yet powerful styling trick. And
- 2:25that's how most people can wear
- 2:27oversized clothing without making it
- 2:29look too big. Oversized pieces should
- 2:32also be balanced out by slightly slimmer
- 2:34pieces. Which is why I probably wouldn't
- 2:36pair these jeans and this jacket
- 2:39together. Everything is very wide and
- 2:42big with no balance in silhouette. But
- 2:44notice how even though this jacket is
- 2:47oversized, it has a drop shoulder for a
- 2:50relaxed fit and the body is cut a little
- 2:53bit wider. However, the sleeves still
- 2:56stop at the appropriate place for me.
- 2:58So, it's oversized. It's not too big.
- 3:01And just a simple swap to a more fitted
- 3:03pair of jeans. And suddenly, I no longer
- 3:06feel like I'm drowning in clothes. These
- 3:08jeans paired with this jacket give a
- 3:10much better visual harmony together. Not
- 3:13only are the jeans slimmer, but they're
- 3:15also slightly cropped. And much like
- 3:18showing your wrists or your hands,
- 3:20showing your ankles also achieves a
- 3:22similar effect. Visually, exposed skin
- 3:25reads as lighter than fabric. So,
- 3:28showing a bit of ankle instead of
- 3:30wearing really long jeans lightens up
- 3:32the entire look and keeps it from
- 3:34feeling too heavy. And it's a small
- 3:36change, but it makes such a big
- 3:38difference. Here we have what could be a
- 3:41really chic outfit. I've got on a
- 3:43cashmere vest, a denim skirt, a leather
- 3:46jacket, and boots. But can you spot what
- 3:49is ruining this outfit? I'll pause for 3
- 3:51seconds whilst you guess.
- 3:54Mistake number two is choosing the wrong
- 3:57shoes. Did you get it right? Shoes are
- 4:00such an important part of your outfit. I
- 4:03can't tell you how many outfits I've
- 4:05seen that look great except for the
- 4:08shoes. This being one of them. Another
- 4:10petite styling rule we get told is, you
- 4:13know, to choose a heel or choose a boot
- 4:16with an elongated toe. And these boots
- 4:20have both of those things. So
- 4:21technically, I should look taller,
- 4:23right? But because the skirt is a midi
- 4:25skirt and then the boots are an ankle
- 4:28boot, we have this section of skin on my
- 4:31legs which is visually shortening my
- 4:33whole frame and it's actually making me
- 4:36appear shorter. For a midi skirt like
- 4:39this, I would actually go for a knee
- 4:41high boot. Admittedly, I think a black
- 4:43boot would look better with this outfit,
- 4:45but I don't own a pair of kneeh high
- 4:48black boots, so just go with these brown
- 4:50ones for now. But you can just see how
- 4:52the knee high boot continues up the leg
- 4:55and this keeps all the lines long and
- 4:58streamlined and there are no kind of
- 5:00like weird visual breaks anywhere.
- 5:02Speaking of finding pieces that actually
- 5:04fit, let's quickly talk about one of the
- 5:07best brands for petites, Petite Studio,
- 5:10who are sponsoring this video. If you've
- 5:12been with me for a while, you'll know
- 5:14that I love and wear Petite Studio all
- 5:17year round. They're a brand that create
- 5:19stylish clothing exclusively for petite
- 5:22women. Jeans that I don't have to get
- 5:23hemmed. Jackets that fit me just right.
- 5:27Jumpers that I don't have to struggle
- 5:29tucking into my trousers. Yes, please.
- 5:31All of their pieces are designed using
- 5:33petite fit models. And I can tell you
- 5:36from experience that their clothes fit
- 5:38like a dream. As a fellow petite myself,
- 5:41I love putting the spotlight on brands
- 5:42that are helping us feel more in harmony
- 5:45and balanced with the world around us.
- 5:47If any of the items from this video take
- 5:49your interest, I'll have everything
- 5:51linked below along with the size that
- 5:53I'm wearing because I know that online
- 5:54shopping can be a little bit tricky. And
- 5:56of course, you can use my discount code
- 5:58Adeline 15 for 15% off your order. Thank
- 6:02you so much Petite Studio for supporting
- 6:04my channel. The next shoe to ruin an
- 6:06otherwise chic outfit are chunky
- 6:09sneakers. One of my favorite outfit
- 6:11combinations, especially for autumn, is
- 6:13a high-waisted trouser and a pair of
- 6:16trainers, but these chunky sneakers are
- 6:18not the best fit for this outfit. You
- 6:20might think a chunky trainer gives you a
- 6:22bit of height, but it's actually
- 6:25weighing you down. You can see that they
- 6:26make the bottom of the trousers slightly
- 6:29pull on top of the shoe and this draws
- 6:32your eye down to them. I could cheat
- 6:35and, you know, show you this outfit with
- 6:37a pair of heeed boots because that is
- 6:40also a really great combination and we
- 6:42all know a pair of well-fitting trousers
- 6:45and boots are a dream combination. But I
- 6:48know that heels are not always the
- 6:50answer. And so I've just made a simple
- 6:52switch to a slimmer profile trainer. The
- 6:56slimmer profile with a narrower toe
- 6:59still adds a little bit of elongation,
- 7:02but most of all the trousers sit really
- 7:04smoothly on top of the trainers. There's
- 7:07no pooling and it doesn't stand out and
- 7:09feel heavy like the chunky trainers.
- 7:11It's not about making huge changes to
- 7:14your outfits. It's these little subtle
- 7:17differences that make a huge difference.
- 7:19Which takes us to the next outfit. Here
- 7:22I have on the same shirt, jeans, and
- 7:24loafers as before. This outfit is
- 7:26totally fine as is. I would wear this.
- 7:29But when I change to a shoe with a lower
- 7:31vamp, such as these ballet flats, you
- 7:34can see more of the top of my foot. And
- 7:36can you just see how that tiny tweak
- 7:39instantly makes the whole look lighter?
- 7:42And because of that small tweak, it's
- 7:44not as if now I all of a sudden look
- 7:46like I've grown 5 in. But you can see
- 7:48that there is now a better balance in my
- 7:51proportion and my frame. So I always opt
- 7:53for a lower vamp shoe if I can. Okay, so
- 7:57here's the next outfit. The colors go
- 7:59together. The silhouette works. And on
- 8:02someone else, this might look really
- 8:05sweet and put together. And honestly,
- 8:07this is a good outfit. There's nothing
- 8:09wrong with it. But I would never wear
- 8:11these things together. Not because it's
- 8:13unflattering, but the gingham trousers
- 8:17with the ruffles on the shirt and the
- 8:18ballet flats, it all feels a little too
- 8:22overly sweet, which is why mistake
- 8:24number three is not balancing out more
- 8:27feminine elements. Now, this styling
- 8:30mistake is maybe a little more personal,
- 8:32but if you are petite, too, then I think
- 8:36you might be able to relate as well. So,
- 8:38being 5'2, I've definitely had moments
- 8:41in my life where I feel like I'm
- 8:44perceived as being young or sweet or
- 8:48cute and maybe just not taken seriously.
- 8:52And of course, that's not just about my
- 8:54height. It's also how I look and maybe
- 8:57my energy and my essence. But I do think
- 8:59my height has had a really big part to
- 9:02play in that as well. And this is why
- 9:03style is such an important part of my
- 9:06life and why I really enjoy putting
- 9:09together these videos for you. Because
- 9:10style is not just about looking good.
- 9:14It's about feeling seen and being seen
- 9:17in a way you want to be seen. All that
- 9:20to say, if I'm attracted to an item of
- 9:22clothing that has more romantic or girly
- 9:26elements, then I make sure to balance it
- 9:28out with something more structured or
- 9:30sporty or masculine. Otherwise, I risk
- 9:33feeling and looking too girly and sweet
- 9:36because of my height. Now, if your
- 9:38personal style does lean more romantic
- 9:41and feminine, then you can completely
- 9:43ignore this tip. But if your style is a
- 9:45bit more like mine, then let me show you
- 9:47how I would style this blouse so it
- 9:50feels more like me. One fabric that
- 9:52never fails to toughen up any look is
- 9:55leather. And so I've paired the blouse
- 9:57with this leather minikrt and of course
- 10:00loafers to add in that masculine element
- 10:02as well. For outerwear, I'd also wear my
- 10:04long trench coat to finish this outfit.
- 10:07And now this feels way more like me. We
- 10:10have a bit of classic and timeless
- 10:12pieces with the loafers and the trench
- 10:14coat. And then the leather skirt makes
- 10:15it feel more modern and cool. Never
- 10:18underestimate the power of a studded
- 10:20belt when styling your outfits. To style
- 10:22this shirt again, I've gone for a double
- 10:24denim look and a big chunky studded
- 10:28belt. I think the double denim leans
- 10:30into that kind of relaxed work wear
- 10:32look. And another small detail here is
- 10:34the raw hem on the jeans, which I think
- 10:37adds a little bit of effortlessness to
- 10:40the outfit. And so all those elements
- 10:42mixed in with this slightly more
- 10:45feminine leaning blouse create what I
- 10:48feel like is a much more stylish outfit
- 10:52than everything just being girly and
- 10:55sweet. Next up, I have a very classic
- 10:58ladylike cardigan that I'm wearing now.
- 11:01And you know, with the subtle stripe and
- 11:03the gold buttons, it leans very feminine
- 11:06and ladylike. Right now I have it with
- 11:08my vintage Levis's with the raw edge
- 11:12again and sneakers. And I think all
- 11:14these things pair together kind of
- 11:16balance out how prim and proper this
- 11:19cardigan might be and makes it a bit
- 11:21more cool and modern and fresh. Another
- 11:24way that I would style this cardigan is
- 11:26to wear it with a pair of really skinny
- 11:30almost like kick flare trousers. And
- 11:32I've paired this with my ankle boots to
- 11:34give me that kind of long and slim
- 11:36silhouette. And I've added the same
- 11:38leather jacket from the beginning of
- 11:40this video. But why does this jacket
- 11:42work better with this outfit rather than
- 11:44the first outfit? The skinny trousers
- 11:46work much better with this oversized
- 11:49jacket compared to the slightly wider
- 11:51jeans from before. And the boots with
- 11:53the elongated toe just help to add
- 11:56length to my frame, which also balances
- 11:58out the width of this jacket. The more
- 12:01oversized something is, such as this
- 12:03jacket, then the more elongation and
- 12:07length you need to balance it out. I
- 12:10hope this video helped you spot a few
- 12:12sneaky style mistakes that you might be
- 12:14making. If you want more petite specific
- 12:16tips, I'll link the last petite style
- 12:18video that I did on screen so that you
- 12:20can watch that next. Thank you so much
- 12:22for watching. I hope you liked the
- 12:24outfits and I will see you in the next
- 12:26video. Bye.
