- 1:22way the community wants to see justice
- 1:26you have pressure on the police pressure
- 1:29on the District Attorney's Office to
- 1:31find the person who did this and to
- 1:35punish that person on June 14 1977 92
- 1:44year old Emma crapster was murdered
- 1:46during a home break-in based on a tip
- 1:51from another suspect the Poughkeepsie
- 1:53police arrested 18 year old Dewey Bo's
- 1:55Ella and two others and charged them
- 1:58with the brutal killing
- 2:03douwe Bo's Ella's life had been shaped
- 2:05by violence when he was 8 years old he
- 2:10saw his father beat his pregnant mother
- 2:12to death sending he and his siblings
- 2:16into foster care
- 2:19when he was 16 his brother was stabbed
- 2:22to death in a fight at 17 he left New
- 2:27York City and moved upstate to
- 2:29Poughkeepsie to find a different life
- 2:33instead he faced the charge of murder he
- 2:38had been in trouble before but the
- 2:39violent crimes weren't his thing okay
- 2:43and he was scared and by the same time
- 2:45determined that things were gonna work
- 2:48out okay I'm not gonna tell you how good
- 2:51he good II did I rob and I still yes but
- 2:55was I murder one no they never found any
- 2:57physical evidence it wasn't enough to
- 2:59indict him the grand jury returned a
- 3:01noble decision and that should have been
- 3:05it
- 3:05that should have been the end of the
- 3:06case
- 3:11it's six years later Dewey's gone to
- 3:15Community College he's turning his life
- 3:17around and all of a sudden he hears
- 3:21there's a warrant out for his arrest for
- 3:26what for a 1977 murder in Poughkeepsie
- 3:29New York six years after Emma crappers
- 3:33murder police came back to do ebo gsella
- 3:36based on the word of two convicted
- 3:38felons
- 3:39Wayne Mosley and Lamar Smith Smith was
- 3:44the suspect who originally implicated
- 3:45Bo's Ella in 1977 Mosley was serving
- 3:49time on a felony robbery conviction when
- 3:52the district attorney approached him
- 3:53with a deal he was offered again at a
- 3:56jail free card if Wayne Mosley testified
- 4:00against two IBAs Ella Wayne Mosley was
- 4:02released from prison and that's exactly
- 4:03what happened for testifying against
- 4:06Bo's Ella Mosley was released from
- 4:09prison with three years remaining on his
- 4:11sentence for his cooperation Lamar Smith
- 4:14was paroled
- 4:15Dewey Bo's ella was arrested he told
- 4:19police he was innocent miles away from
- 4:22the scene when the crime happened
- 4:23but in the fall of 1983 before an
- 4:26all-white jury he went on trial for
- 4:29murder the prosecutors offered the
- 4:33testimony of two convicted felons Lamar
- 4:35Smith and Wayne Mosley both of whom got
- 4:38out of prison in exchange for their
- 4:39testimony it was all testimonial
- 4:42evidence there was nothing one could
- 4:45hold touch smell or see that linked do
- 4:50IBAs Allah to the murder of Hema
- 4:51crapster who stole 100 items nothing had
- 4:56my fingerprints on it
- 4:57nothing December 3rd 1983 the verdict
- 5:04came in guilty 20 years to life
- 5:13everything was taken from me
- 5:17you had about seven people have on the
- 5:19jury but I broke down crime once they
- 5:21found me guilty and so I found that to
- 5:23be very strange and I looked at them and
- 5:28I said it's too late it's too late you
- 5:32know you set me away for the rest of my
- 5:35life it's too late
- 5:37[Music]
- 5:49what breaks a man here it's what every
- 5:54man loses and each man serves time is
- 6:03being in a box
- 6:04[Music]
- 6:06we're hopes and dreams can be destroyed
- 6:09[Music]
- 6:11sometime there's no faith there's no
- 6:13hope I was angry
- 6:15I was bitter I was frustrated I was mad
- 6:18I had to find myself to escape the box
- 6:26beause Ella found the ring in 1985 Bob
- 6:30Jackson a correction officer at
- 6:32sing-sing started a boxing program I
- 6:35knew that anything that one could
- 6:39implement in the daily routine of the
- 6:42inmates that they would like would help
- 6:46to ease the tension I said I'm getting
- 6:50on this I stayed out of trouble
- 6:53I pushed away from all negativity
- 6:56because it was me fight against the
- 7:00system I'm trying to get my freedom in
- 7:05the ring beause Ella excelled
- 7:07he became sing sings light heavyweight
- 7:09champion as part of the boxing program
- 7:12top amateurs were brought into the
- 7:14prison to box with inmates in 1989 an
- 7:18undefeated Boz Ella faced New York
- 7:21Golden Gloves champ
- 7:22Lou Duvall he's one of those guys who
- 7:25just kept picking as the fight got
- 7:28longer he was coming on harder and I
- 7:32caught him with a good shot and I kind
- 7:34of
- 7:35they stopped the fight because of a
- 7:37cuddle hi you know but he was very lucky
- 7:41I walked out of things he would like to
- 7:44put it what made me proud is that he
- 7:47went on ahead he won a championship in
- 7:49the world as showing me that the
- 7:51abilities would have ability with no
- 7:56opportunity but after six and a half
- 7:59years inside there was a glimmer of hope
- 8:02an appeals panel ruled Bo's Ellis civil
- 8:05rights were violated in his trial when
- 8:07prosecutors excluded all potential
- 8:09African American jurors his conviction
- 8:12was overturned
- 8:14Dewey Bo's Ella was going back to court
- 8:22[Music]
- 8:27in 1990 Dewey Bo's Ella was serving 20
- 8:31years to life for murder but that same
- 8:34year his conviction was overturned and
- 8:36in December he was on trial again for
- 8:39the murder of Emma Kratzer this time as
- 8:42the trial neared its end prosecutors
- 8:44approached posed Ella with a deal they
- 8:48often need 7:14
- 8:52then I had at that time six and a happy
- 8:55is it so I couldn't went to the parole
- 8:57board six months later and possibility
- 9:00have gone along you get the words out of
- 9:03her mouth and he said I didn't kill I'm
- 9:05a crafter I can't can't plead guilty
- 9:07then he came back and he offered me
- 9:12manslaughter and they said all you had
- 9:15to do was sign a piece of paper and tell
- 9:16us how you did it and uh go home beause
- 9:22Ella was 31 years old he dreamed of
- 9:25becoming a professional boxer of
- 9:27building a life of having a family of
- 9:31being free sign the paper and walk out
- 9:36of prison
- 9:43no way I got the dying prison to tell
- 9:47you something I didn't do I'll tell you
- 9:50if I did it I'd be man enough to tell
- 9:53you I did it
- 9:54beause Ella rejected the plea offer the
- 9:59case went to the jury if you see a of
- 10:03your freedom in pates I'll do anything
- 10:07just give my freedom and do he wouldn't
- 10:09do that
- 10:09on December 13th 1990 the jury came back
- 10:15guilty again I couldn't live with that I
- 10:25couldn't live with all the rest of my
- 10:30life saying I did something that I
- 10:34didn't do like this couldn't live with
- 10:36that I couldn't
- 10:44back to sing-sing back to 20 years to
- 10:49life time takes but time teaches as
- 10:54months became years mozella took classes
- 10:58and earned degrees a bachelor's and a
- 11:01master's as a model prisoner
- 11:03he was profiled by a local news channel
- 11:06for his participation in the new york
- 11:08theology masters program
- 11:09this first of learning this type of
- 11:12education comes once in a lifetime in
- 11:161995 in the prisons visiting room he met
- 11:20elementary school teacher
- 11:21Trina Boone while Boone was visiting her
- 11:24brother at that time I didn't know what
- 11:27he was in for I didn't know how much
- 11:29time he had but I knew one thing as I
- 11:32got closer to him there was something
- 11:34there that I said I really need to meet
- 11:36this person
- 11:36I was very blunt and I said I'm not
- 11:40looking for a girlfriend but I want a
- 11:42wife and that's what had me cracking up
- 11:45as I was leaving and got to the car and
- 11:47I'm like oh wife you know I really
- 11:50couldn't put prison and a wife together
- 11:52it just didn't fit Beau's Ella called
- 11:55and wrote and courted Trina in December
- 11:59of 1995 he asked her to marry him I said
- 12:04you know do we I don't I have to think
- 12:08about that you know I like you I like
- 12:11the person that you are
- 12:12but you asking me to change my entire
- 12:15life
- 12:16she did on March 30th 1996 in a prison
- 12:21visiting room
- 12:22they became husband and wife you know I
- 12:26did get to visit him we did get a chance
- 12:28to sit next to each other it wasn't like
- 12:30behind any walls or anything to me I
- 12:33always called it the play marriage we
- 12:37did this for years and years and years
- 12:39you start to get used to it
- 12:42married educated imprisoned after 20
- 12:49years Bose Ella became eligible for
- 12:51parole in 2003 I said baby and then you
- 12:58know right now I'm never going to the
- 13:00poor boy tell his people I did it but I
- 13:02mean I got nine prisoners so be it you
- 13:05can walk away now she said I hang all
- 13:08over Bo's Ella was denied he went back
- 13:13three more times in 2005 2007 and 2009
- 13:19he was denied all three parole should
- 13:23have been a rubber stamp and it wasn't
- 13:25for the simple reason that do we
- 13:26wouldn't confess to a crime he hadn't
- 13:28committed since 2001 he had been writing
- 13:32to the Innocence Project which helps to
- 13:34free the wrongfully imprisoned through
- 13:36DNA testing he wrote the same letter
- 13:39nearly every week after four years of
- 13:43letters the group finally took bows
- 13:45Ella's case and then found out as part
- 13:48of a routine purge by the City of
- 13:50Poughkeepsie the evidence gathered by
- 13:52police had been destroyed
- 13:55the blood samples the hair samples and
- 13:58everything that could prove my innocence
- 14:00was gone he said train that was my last
- 14:04hope
- 14:06and I said no it's still just the
- 14:10beginning
- 14:11I said you're coming out of here I knew
- 14:16he was innocent I knew that if somebody
- 14:19just dug in there if somebody just did
- 14:22some more investigation that they would
- 14:23find something that would overturn that
- 14:26conviction the Innocence Project
- 14:29believed in Beau's Ella's case and
- 14:31turned it over to a powerful New York
- 14:33law firm Wilmer Hale second-year
- 14:36associate Ross first and Baum
- 14:37volunteered to explore the facts I
- 14:41firmly believed from the trial
- 14:44transcripts from talking to the
- 14:47Innocence Project and from meeting Dewey
- 14:49that he could not have committed this
- 14:51crime how in the world were we going to
- 14:55demonstrate that Dewey was wrongfully
- 14:58convicted the lawyers from Wilmer Hale
- 15:01immediately began re-examining the facts
- 15:03and pursuing old leads they asked to
- 15:08meet with the lead detective in the case
- 15:09and to their surprise he handed over a
- 15:12copy of his 30 year old case file in the
- 15:16file they discovered interviews with
- 15:18witnesses that directly contradicted the
- 15:20testimony of Wayne Mosley and Lamar
- 15:22Smith the convicted felons who
- 15:25implicated Beau's Ella for the murder
- 15:27pages of that report were never shown to
- 15:29Beau's Ella's lawyers and those
- 15:31interviews were never heard at fiber
- 15:33trial here was this evidence showing
- 15:37that Wayne Mosley story and Lamar Smith
- 15:41story just didn't make sense it didn't
- 15:44happen and yet the district attorney
- 15:46didn't show it to do these lawyers
- 15:49with these new findings Wilmer Hale
- 15:53filed a motion to overturn Bo's Ella's
- 15:55murder conviction on October 14th 2009
- 16:00that conviction was dismissed but Bo's
- 16:04Ella was not free the district attorney
- 16:07would decide in court if Bo's Ella would
- 16:09face a third trial for murder when the
- 16:13day came to go to court we really did
- 16:16not know for sure what the prosecutor
- 16:18was gonna do the doors open and do he
- 16:22appears in shackles
- 16:26so the first time that I had seen him in
- 16:28shackles our view of the matter has
- 16:31determined that many of the witnesses
- 16:33who were integral to the prosecution of
- 16:35this case I no longer available what do
- 16:38you want to do mr. prosecutor
- 16:40are you want to take this man to order
- 16:43trial are you were going to take this
- 16:45case and let it go as a result it's our
- 16:48position that the matter must be
- 16:50dismissed in the interest of justice and
- 16:52the people so move to dismiss the
- 16:54indictment and rivers all in order to be
- 16:56released immediately
- 16:59[Applause]
- 17:04the judge looked at Dewey and ordered
- 17:07the guards to remove the shackles and
- 17:10Dewey was free
- 17:11[Music]
- 17:28we did it i soap
- 17:32[Music]
- 17:34I am a lifetime
- 17:38I got my life back we never prosecution
- 17:42and the police did I'm gonna let it go
- 17:45because I got to move on with my life
- 17:47[Music]
- 17:49I worry about what they did I've never
- 17:51won't get away I need to go after 26
- 17:55years in prison
- 17:56Dewey Bo's Ella now fifty years old
- 18:00wanted many things as a free man among
- 18:03them to know what it would feel like
- 18:05just once to fight as a professional
- 18:11it's for me it's nothing everybody else
- 18:13miss from here I need to know I need to
- 18:17know what could it be
- 18:26after spending 26 years in prison for a
- 18:30murder he didn't commit
- 18:31Dewey Bo's Ella was finally a free man
- 18:40he volunteered for a job working as a
- 18:42trainer and conditioning coach spreading
- 18:49his story sharing his inspiration in
- 18:54exchange Mozilla had a request he wanted
- 18:58one fight I didn't want to fight amateur
- 19:01I would really like to know what it
- 19:03feels like to be a pro and I believe
- 19:05that it was something that you know I
- 19:07needed to find out for myself as word of
- 19:12Beau's Ella's story spread it captured
- 19:13the attention of the national media and
- 19:15in July of 2011 he was honored with the
- 19:18ESPN Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the
- 19:21ESPYs
- 19:22ladies and gentlemen please join me in
- 19:24welcoming Dewey boos Ella
- 19:29I saw a man who as he walked up to that
- 19:31podium and he threw his hands up to me
- 19:35that was him saying I told you I was
- 19:38never giving up
- 19:43[Applause]
- 19:46every day I had to ask myself how do I
- 19:50survive this nightmare sing-sing a place
- 19:53where hate and anger are the order of
- 19:56the day
- 19:57boxing awakened me I felt free I was no
- 20:01longer a prisoner so all the lawyers
- 20:05involved in my case thank you for your
- 20:08dedication and belief in me and most of
- 20:10all for making me a free man may God
- 20:15bless you all
- 20:15good night
- 20:21[Music]

- 20:24ceremony I'm I'm emailing our friends
- 20:27and business partners at Golden Boy
- 20:29Promotions Richard Schaefer and Oscar De
- 20:31La Hoya and I said there's an incredible
- 20:33story if you're not gonna believe this
- 20:35this is giving a man who was
- 20:39incarcerated for all those years an
- 20:41opportunity to live his dream of
- 20:42fighting that one professional fight
- 20:44let's make it happen for him days later
- 20:48promoters identified a potential fight
- 20:50for Bo's Ella on the undercard of the
- 20:52Bernard Hopkins Chad Dawson light
- 20:55heavyweight championship fight on
- 20:56October 15th in Los Angeles you think I
- 21:00ain't gonna jump on it
- 21:02right it's the once-in-a-lifetime I'm
- 21:04not trying to embarrass myself you know
- 21:07I know that I have you know the age
- 21:08against me but first beause Ella needed
- 21:12a license to fight professionally in
- 21:14California no one over 50 years old had
- 21:17ever earned one Dewey Bose Ella was 52
- 21:24after the five-hour flight from New York
- 21:26Dewey and his wife Trina arrived in Los
- 21:29Angeles for a day-long battery of
- 21:32medical tests followed by an evening
- 21:34sparring session all part of his
- 21:37California licensing exam one step at a
- 21:42time
- 21:43after this the next one this gets busy
- 21:47rock and roll when I finally got to LA
- 21:54for the next five hours I took nothing
- 21:57but testing didn't even have a chance to
- 22:01unpack my stuff
- 22:06your EKG I'll tell you right now came
- 22:08out completely normal
- 22:09you will be undergoing an MRI the brain

- 22:26ten ten and in prison isn't
- 22:33once you've completed this I will email
- 22:35all this over to the state of California

- 22:39will get a federal ID number providing
- 22:41you pass your evaluation tonight show
- 22:44the inspector that you've got you have
- 22:46the skills of a boxer and that you know
- 22:48you can defend yourself in a boxing ring

- 23:03see today when we put him through these
- 23:04number of drills if he has been doing
- 23:06what he has said because if he has been
- 23:09doing what he said then we will know
- 23:11right away what we're gonna do now is go
- 23:14over what we're gonna do exactly in your
- 23:18evaluation to become a pro athlete in
- 23:20the state of California you're gonna do
- 23:22five minutes on the jump rope
- 23:30time five minutes on the heavy bag time

- 23:59gonna do three three-minute round
- 24:00sparring with mr. Karp I've been up
- 24:07since 3 o'clock this morning correct
- 24:09yeah again we're just doing what we were
- 24:11told to do we were told to come here and
- 24:12do an evaluation and that's all that
- 24:15we're doing right now so we just follow
- 24:17the same protocol we do with every
- 24:18athlete in California okay after the
- 24:22four phases of cardio testing mozella
- 24:25entered the ring to spar with a man 22
- 24:27years younger professional heavyweight
- 24:30Andre car throg this is control
- 24:47I could see that the opponent the guy he
- 24:57was borrowing with it was uh really
- 24:59going kind of wild Donald I made the
- 25:03decision to just walk out at certain
- 25:04point in my heart I knew he was dead
- 25:09tired
- 25:20[Applause]
- 25:26Harger looked good technique looked good
- 25:28in terms of how was it rated between one
- 25:31and ten
- 25:31that'll be determined by our office in
- 25:34Sacramento
- 25:34I believed 99.9% I proved him that I did
- 25:39it so I believe that I should get it on
- 25:41this close from getting that fight I'm
- 25:44this close
- 25:51every home
- 25:53I think he was feeling like alright this
- 25:56a third trial because his life was in
- 26:01somebody else's hands again hey that was
- 26:07a little nervous I'll be honest hello I
- 26:14do it
- 26:16how you doing Jay well okay first of all
- 26:21I thank you for coming to California and
- 26:23doing the evaluation for us yeah I
- 26:25appreciate you giving me the chance I
- 26:27put together a letter after going
- 26:30through everything and I'm gonna go
- 26:31ahead and read right off the letter and
- 26:32then we'll go from there with a question
- 26:34dear mr. Brazil is whether self service
- 26:37know that that you're professional
- 26:38boxing application is currently denied
- 26:40this action being taken based upon your
- 26:43performance and evaluation process
- 26:44performance strong sports boxing gym in
- 26:46Los Angeles despite receiving high
- 26:49cardiological reviews it was the actual
- 26:51sparring stage of the eval that raised
- 26:53concerns do it it was reported that you
- 26:55had difficulty with lateral movement in
- 26:56the ring it was noted that you showed
- 26:59questionable reflexes and lacked
- 27:01adequate defensive footwork
- 27:03this isn't be-all-end-all you have an
- 27:05opportunity to next month
- 27:06to hone your craft a bit more work on
- 27:09some of the things we just listed off
- 27:11and possibly coming up in another
- 27:13evaluation to try and make it
- 27:16rescheduled about in October 15 if
- 27:18that's something you would like to do do
- 27:21we just went to the men's room for a
- 27:23minute this is his wife Trina bozo how
- 27:25are you I'm doing great Trina did you
- 27:28okay I hope so I know that the first
- 27:31portion was stunning probably to doing
- 27:34that first thing we gave him hope but we
- 27:37gave him some Avenue to hone his skills
- 27:39and here evaluate it okay we're very
- 27:42confident that we came up with the
- 27:44correct evaluation in that he doesn't at
- 27:47the present time show the ability to be
- 27:50at that level
- 27:52all that for nothing manically just did
- 27:54that from the beginning all that for
- 27:56nothing all that work for nothing man
- 28:03almost a bunch of booze somewhere my
- 28:06life is being man always just struggling
- 28:09the conflict I'm gonna try it again for
- 28:12it's over with man they killed it so so
- 28:20you're saying you guys will give him
- 28:23another shot at this evaluation I do
- 28:25agree that you probably didn't get the
- 28:27best out of Dewey and I only believe
- 28:30that it's fair then he come in fresh and
- 28:32if you still have the same outcome I
- 28:35think that that this was a fair decision
- 28:38so this letter that you're sending will
- 28:40tell Dewey the exact things he needs to
- 28:42work on when you ain't got me doing over
- 28:5425 minutes a word the man didn't do
- 29:02anything I bust my butt man he didn't do
- 29:06anything
- 29:06he sat there for Oh laughter now I
- 29:09worked out and then you go putting out
- 29:11there and heavyweight when I'm a crews
- 29:13away he got me by at least 25 pounds so
- 29:16he's got the advantage you took the
- 29:18advantage away from me if you didn't
- 29:20take the fans away from I guarantee it's
- 29:22a whole different fight I probably would
- 29:24have dropped them but how can I drop me
- 29:26you take away my energy he even said
- 29:29your maybe you want me to fight this man
- 29:31is wrong with this man after all the
- 29:33work you did with him and y'all said go
- 29:35out then do it and that's exactly what I
- 29:37did he didn't beat him taking away my
- 29:44dream okay I appreciate your time nope
- 30:06she's overweight you know I'm not I'm
- 30:09not thinking about it no can't quit now
- 30:10it's not quittin it's just a reality
- 30:13reality they're gonna do the same
- 30:15get this doing nothing comes easy for
- 30:18you oh yeah that's how did it I'm just
- 30:21sick of it no you got 30 days 30 days
- 30:24for what you need to find a trainer that
- 30:26where's the store that's how it is
- 30:29remember how you say either you lay down
- 30:31or you get up and fight which one are
- 30:33you gonna do it's not laying down that's
- 30:36just a simple fact is they don't want me
- 30:38to fight yeah they always all every
- 30:48single time [ __ ] calm accomplished
- 30:52wake up I only got to bust my ass and
- 30:55prove something
- 30:57[Music]
- 30:59his quote to this world is to never give
- 31:01up you're telling the world to never
- 31:05give up and you're going to give up you
- 31:09can't give up let nobody take away your
- 31:14dreams he deserves another chance
- 31:23Dewey Bo's eller was denied a license to
- 31:26fight professionally in California but
- 31:29he was given a second chance
- 31:31another licensing test to be taken in
- 31:34one month
- 31:37this time he would train in Philadelphia
- 31:41with a man who understood where he'd
- 31:44been and what he'd been through the
- 31:47difference between me and Dewey and my
- 31:49story is that I I did what I did not pay
- 31:52my time this is an innocent man at 17
- 31:56Bernard Hopkins was serving time for
- 31:57nine felonies like Bo's Ella he
- 32:00discovered the prison boxing program
- 32:03after his release he would go on to earn
- 32:06the world middleweight title and
- 32:08successfully defended a record 20 times
- 32:11I never knew this man personally he
- 32:16never knew me but the connection is if I
- 32:18can give this lifelong dream that could
- 32:21have been and was taken away give him
- 32:24the opportunity to do it the work began
- 32:31immediately at the hands of Hopkins
- 32:33longtime assistant trainer Danny Davis
- 32:37I thought I'd do something about
- 32:39training I found out that I was pleased
- 32:42I was way off
- 32:46no I thought he wouldn't get past the
- 32:49first eight exercises and when he did I
- 32:52said this is probably not I was thinking
- 32:58I'm like wow wow man we really can be
- 33:02really do this when we got in the ring
- 33:08that second round he was tired he was
- 33:10pretty much spunked out and I told him
- 33:19they're gonna do two rounds and he
- 33:20turned around and he didn't complained
- 33:24and he started dancing on his toes and
- 33:26they started getting loose that was a
- 33:29death deciding point that I wanted to
- 33:31train him for this [ __ ] at the scene
- 33:39he'll today we're gonna make some noise
- 33:45in training as in boxing will is the
- 33:50single way the road
- 34:00the ring
- 34:05the rounds
- 34:09will is the path and the passage that
- 34:13every fighter follows to get where he
- 34:15wants to go he's not the average Vista -
- 34:19yo I know a lot of 52 yards and
- 34:24physically they in in good shape I know
- 34:28a lot of 46 years old 35 year old they
- 34:31come keep up with this man Bernard
- 34:37Hopkins is a teacher of the game and a
- 34:39student of the game and do we is in a
- 34:43perfect position to learn everything
- 34:46there is to know about boxing and he's
- 34:48learning from the best
- 34:49this is where I got it staying back up
- 34:51like I made and make it happen one
- 34:56minute rest three minutes just like the
- 35:00fight
- 35:03mosè Ella's biggest hurdle was climbing
- 35:06back in the ring to spar mastering the
- 35:09portion of the test he failed they need
- 35:12to see action you understand
- 35:18we got pitch them no no punches man Nate
- 35:22Ruess no we pass a little test like that
- 35:28this is jus just about one I want
- 35:31pressure right and I want you to make
- 35:33his head fight
- 35:34so this is the rental he got I want him
- 35:36to get to keep pressure on it
- 35:39it's gonna make him up breaking
- 35:41depression on it see Kenny handling
- 35:44their pressure
- 35:45see kidney hunter that pressure
- 35:57[Applause]
- 36:14[Music]
- 36:16when we go in front of the Commission
- 36:19they want to see that 52 is just the age
- 36:29even if they said no I'll learn to let
- 36:32it go like I learned let go everything
- 36:33else in my life I just want to know that
- 36:36I gave one Z in percent and then I can
- 36:39live with that
- 36:40a month after failing to get his license
- 36:43Bo's Ella was back for his second and
- 36:46final chance they find that much stuff
- 36:49down I did a lot other people down as
- 36:51well they took the chance on me with
- 36:55Danny Davis in Philadelphia to work with
- 36:58Hopkins assistant trainer
- 37:00Wendell Chavis led the workout golden
- 37:05boy president Oscar De La Hoya came to
- 37:08see the fighter at first end he willing
- 37:12to see if this is worth it because his
- 37:14reputation is on the line before so what
- 37:22we're looking for is being able to
- 37:23defend yourself that's my main concern
- 37:25obviously is safety in the ring the
- 37:27first portion or do some five minutes of
- 37:29jump rope get the blood flow in a little
- 37:31bit
- 37:38I don't wish for the Commission to look
- 37:40at his speed that his punching power I
- 37:47want them to focus directly on his heart
- 37:53and think about what he has accomplished
- 37:56what he has gone through to be right
- 37:59here today it doesn't get any tougher
- 38:03than that
- 38:05after looking strong in the cardio
- 38:07testing mozella returned to the ring to
- 38:11confront the portion of the test he
- 38:12failed the first time
- 38:17[Music]
- 38:35[Applause]
- 38:36this is it one two three one two three
- 38:40isn't it give it all you got
- 38:50they're doing let's go talk real quick
- 38:53the concern is the incoming job I notice
- 38:56you were kind of taking those even
- 38:57though we're going at about 80% you can
- 38:59improve on that you got a couple more
- 39:00weeks prior to your camp and prior to
- 39:02the fight you're ready to go give it to
- 39:05me you guys thank you may find that
- 39:13finding a funny guy in there I finally
- 39:16got it can you hear me all right I want
- 39:46you know they passed the physical
- 39:47gave me my license I did
- 39:56they said I couldn't do it I did it now
- 40:01let's move on to the next stage which is
- 40:04fighting it truly is my honor to be
- 40:10presenting to you making this
- 40:12professional debut Dewey Bo's Ella do it
- 40:16I wanted to buy the know this just what
- 40:21the hand it's for you you may think that
- 40:23this is a charity thing but this is not
- 40:25a charity thing I'm out here to win and
- 40:27I'm gonna give you one zillion percent
- 40:28of what I got at 52 and I'm not busted
- 40:38I'm not busted so I admire he had
- 40:45exactly zero professional fights
- 40:49he was 52 years old but on October 12th
- 40:53of 2011 three days from his pro debut
- 40:57Dewey Bo's Ella went from captivating
- 41:00story to humble star hello mr. president
- 41:06yes this mr. president yes sir how are
- 41:08you oh I'm good and I'm good I heard

- 41:21honor thank you very much

- 41:24in prison and what you've been doing
- 41:26since you got out is something that I
- 41:28think all of us are very impressed with
- 41:31now you're certain there's only going to
- 41:32be one fight you're gonna fight huh yes

- 41:53I believe he'll go back to his childhood
- 41:58and I believe he'll think about all that
- 42:01he's been through and I think that's
- 42:06what he's gonna hold on to when he go
- 42:09out in that ring
- 42:13this is a guy who I met in prison who
- 42:19probably had no right having any hope
- 42:27and there he'll be standing in a boxing
- 42:31ring as a professional boxer I'll have
- 42:36just enormous pride and a little bit of
- 42:42fear
- 42:45[Music]
- 42:53I'd be lying to you if I say I'm not
- 42:56nervous my expectation is to go in there
- 43:02to cheer them on and for him to walk out
- 43:07of here victorious
- 43:11and that one fight no more fights
- 43:19he has nothing else to prove
- 43:30okay guys let's go
