Full transcript
- 0:00- So I have a job.
- 0:03It's a weird job, I get,
- 0:04I get in strange situations in my job.
- 0:06I get exposed to things.
- 0:10I'm often there when the Big Guy's
- 0:13up to something ridiculous.
- 0:16Like, for example, did you know that
- 0:18for every snake on Earth there is one snake dick.
- 0:22And at first it might think,
- 0:24well, yeah, that makes sense, but,
- 0:26but actually, you know, only half of snakes have dicks.
- 0:31And that means,
- 0:33that every snake that has a dick has two dicks.
- 0:36And that's a true fact about our world.
- 0:39That's the kind of information I run across
- 0:42as I'm doing my job.
- 0:43And that job is to eliminate distraction.
- 0:48And you seem like distractions.
- 0:54(soft music)
- 1:00You know, the tails on a swallowtail butterfly
- 1:03don't serve any aerodynamic purpose.
- 1:05(players laughing)
- 1:06- I feel very threatened all of a sudden
- 1:08(players laughing)
- 1:11- They're there because birds need something to grab onto
- 1:16when they're trying to kill a butterfly.
- 1:18And they're designed to capture the attention of a bird.
- 1:23And that bird will grab onto that tail and it will break off
- 1:27and the butterfly will be free.
- 1:30That is how I imagine my work sometimes.
- 1:33Something things have to go.
- 1:36I do not think that you are the tail
- 1:40of a swallowtail butterfly.
- 1:43I think you might be the butterfly.
- 1:46- I only, I only caught half of that.
- 1:49(players laughing)
- 1:51Justin looks and says,
- 1:52I'll tell you anything you want to know.
- 1:54(players laughing)
- 1:57- All right, so, eyes can't be itchy.
- 2:01The membranes around the eyes
- 2:03are innervated with itch receptors and pain neurons,
- 2:06whereas the eyes themselves only have pain neurons
- 2:09because of course, evolution is strongly incentivized
- 2:12to prevent you from scratching your cornea
- 2:15with your fingernail.
- 2:15So your eyes are never actually itchy.
- 2:18People say my eyes are itchy, but they're not.
- 2:20They're not actually itchy,
- 2:21it's just the membranes around your eyes.
- 2:24Did that make you feel better?
- 2:26- What do you do with 'em once you grab 'em?
- 2:27- I say in his ear, I say,
- 2:28hi, I don't know if we've met before, but I'm the Fix.
- 2:31Did you know that more than half of the bones in your body
- 2:36are in your hands and feet?
- 2:37- Oh no. - That's the most
- 2:39threatening thing I've ever heard.
- 2:41- And legitimately, your fun facts are fucking nightmares.
- 2:44(players laughing)
- 2:45- Imagine if someone said that to you with like...
- 2:48- As he's holding you.
- 2:51- You see the guy just goes, "Fucking kill me, man.
- 2:54Fucking just kill me, man, fucking kill me, dude."
- 2:57- Well, why are you trying to hurt us?
- 2:59- I suck, man, kill me. (players laughing)
- 3:02I'm bad.
- 3:03- I need you to answer the question.
- 3:05- I don't know, dude.
- 3:07- Remind him of the fact again.
- 3:10- Whenever somebody says,
- 3:11"I'm gonna break every bone in your body",
- 3:13I think, that's ridiculous.
- 3:15It'd be way too much work.
- 3:16But I could break half the bones in your body.
- 3:20- No, no man, no way. (bones snapping)
- 3:21He's just snapping his own fingers.
- 3:23(players laughing)
- 3:24- Did you know...
- 3:26- My heart starts beating faster .
- 3:28(players laughing)
- 3:31- The urethra contains taste receptors.
- 3:34- Ew, ugh. - Taste bud like structures.
- 3:37- Bro, slow down, what?
- 3:38- I'm gonna tell you, eagles,
- 3:42when they grip onto something,
- 3:45they actually have to flex a muscle to ungrip.
- 3:49So a eagle can hold onto something so hard
- 3:51that even after it dies, it never let's go.
- 3:55But you are not an eagle,
- 3:58you need to let go of whatever this is.
- 4:01Mr. Bishop, you're looking lovely today.
- 4:03Did you know that most of the pyramids
- 4:06on Earth are in Sudan?
- 4:09- [Player] Huh?
- 4:11- You like my facts, right?
- 4:12- See, he looks at you and says,
- 4:15how does that help us, Fix?
- 4:16- Anyway, I killed the kid.
- 4:18(players laughing)
- 4:19If you don't mind me saying this, pelicans...
- 4:24(players laughing)
- 4:28have three stomachs, and one of them's just for bones.
- 4:33You know, it's really easy to detect an acid,
- 4:39but it's not easy to detect the presence of oxygen
- 4:43or carbon dioxide.
- 4:45But when carbon dioxide meets water,
- 4:48like it does in our blood, it creates carbonic acid.
- 4:52And that means that our bodies
- 4:55can detect the presence of carbon dioxide,
- 4:57but not the presence or absence of oxygen.
- 5:01(bell dings)
- 5:02So as we live through our lives,
- 5:07if we are deprived of oxygen,
- 5:10we have no idea that that is happening
- 5:13as long as we are breathing out carbon dioxide.
- 5:18But if we are not breathing in oxygen,
- 5:21we just go to sleep and we die.
- 5:25But if we allow the CO2 to build up, we panic.
- 5:32We flail, we break,
- 5:37until finally we die.
- 5:39And I look at, I look at this guy and I say,
- 5:41Did you know that people can have constipation so bad
- 5:50that it will back up and impact their vagus nerve?
- 5:53And as they are finally eliminating that impacted stool,
- 5:59it can have an effect on the nervous system so great
- 6:04that they forget who they are.
- 6:06It's called constipation related amnesia.
- 6:09A woman in Tokyo forgot who she was for eight hours.
- 6:14- Shit yourself stupid. (players laughing)
- 6:20- My job is that is hyper fixation.
- 6:23And so sometimes when the big guy gets really obsessed
- 6:26with stupid stuff, I'm around.
- 6:28I find out things like that, isn't that neat?
- 6:30Can you take a deep breath for me?
- 6:32(Brennan squelches)
- 6:34- And he just in front of you and he goes,
- 6:37I think you wanted me to shit?
- 6:39I don't know, you're so frightening.
- 6:41I still took a shit, everyone shit!
- 6:43everyone who works for me shit now!"
- 6:45- Everyone take a deep breath, I said, take a deep breath.
- 6:48- "We gotta do it now, you gotta do now.
- 6:49He runs over and you see he hits a big button
- 6:52and everywhere, all over Mentopolis,
- 6:55everyone driving with the cops, everyone else,
- 6:57you see claxons going all over.
- 6:59There are very few emergency systems
- 7:02that the city has put in place
- 7:05(players laughing)
- 7:06that are basically like air raid sirens.
- 7:09- Where is this going?
- 7:11- (imitating sirens) And you just hear,
- 7:13We are shitting, we are shitting.
- 7:16We are shitting, the big guy is shitting,
- 7:18we are taking a shit.
- 7:19- I do not wanna be on the sidewalk underneath the lines.
- 7:22- Do you wanna know facts about your bones?
- 7:26- Okay. (players laughing)
- 7:29- You catch up with me whenever you want.
- 7:30- I just tell her so much about bones.
- 7:33Bones are actually living.
- 7:35And do you know that the reason
- 7:36we produce blood inside of our bones
- 7:39is because it's one of the places
- 7:40that's safest from UV radiation?
- 7:44Just fun facts.
- 7:46They're not scary.
- 7:47(players laughing)
- 7:49- Um, that's fascinating.
- 7:52Did you know...
- 7:53(players laughing)
- 7:57Did you know that there are some species of birds
- 8:00that have a secondary pouch in their esophagus
- 8:05or in their digestive tract where they actually contain,
- 8:09refered to as a craw, that has stones or other hard material
- 8:15to help break up food matter
- 8:17before it passes into the rest of their digestive tract.
- 8:21- There are also some birds that can produce
- 8:23a kind of nutritious substance that they'll,
- 8:26instead of regurgitating the their own food,
- 8:28they will produce a kind of milk.
- 8:31It's almost like lactation, but it evolved separately.
- 8:34Gives it a case of convergent evolution.
- 8:36Pigeons do it.
- 8:37- See, did you know that pigeons?
- 8:40(players laughing)
- 8:41- Let's go, let's go, let's go, come on.
- 8:43- I feel like I'm watching chess.
- 8:45(players laughing)
- 8:47- You quickly realize you have all the time in the world.
- 8:50(players laughing)
- 8:53Did you know that woodpeckers have a tongue bone
- 8:58called a hyoid bone that wraps around their brain
- 9:02because the pounding into the tree can, of course,
- 9:09you know, that needs to protect their brain
- 9:11from the impact of that powerful feeling of,
- 9:18you know, smashing into the wood of the tree to,
- 9:22you know, devour their common meal items,
- 9:24which of course are grubs and larval insects.
- 9:29- I didn't know, I didn't know.
- 9:30- Can I do a snoop check to see how horny the Fix is?
- 9:33(players laughing)
- 9:36- And I say nervously, there are some salamanders
- 9:39that feed their babies their own skin.
- 9:41Uh, I gotta go. (players laughing)
- 9:45Can I flick 'em on the forehead a couple of times and say,
- 9:48You know, you can't hum while you're blocking your nose.
- 9:51You know, you can't hum while you're blocking your nose.
- 9:54Give it a try.
- 9:57(muffled humming)
- 10:00Where are the key holes?
- 10:04- Mr. Fix! - Roddy!
- 10:06- He gives you a big hug and he says,
- 10:08did you know that the black mamba has been observed
- 10:13at top speeds of 12 and a half miles per hour
- 10:17at its fastest slither?
- 10:19And that at that speed it would almost certainly catch
- 10:24even some of the fastest humans on the planet.
- 10:27- I did not know that.
- 10:30- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm. - I love new facts.
- 10:32- Even faster people would probably not have the stamina
- 10:35because the resting or average speed
- 10:38is seven and a half miles per hour,
- 10:39which is faster than the human average of six.
- 10:42And that's for healthy adults.
- 10:45- You know so much stuff.
- 10:48- I made a drawing of a reticulated python,
- 10:51which is actually the longest,
- 10:54did you know it's the longest snake in the world?
- 10:55It's not the biggest, the biggest is the Anaconda,
- 10:58but the longest is the reticulated python.
- 11:00- You know what the longest animal in the world is?
- 11:02- No, what is it?
- 11:03- It's the bootlace worm.
- 11:05- Is that a reptile? - It's a worm.
- 11:08- It's not a reptile, but it's still a cool fact.
- 11:10- But that's close, that's the cool fact,
- 11:11that's pretty close.
- 11:13(players laughing)
- 11:15- Clearly not interested. (players laughing)
- 11:18- Honestly, interacting with kids,
- 11:20whenever you interact with kids,
- 11:21there needs to be one moment where you're like,
- 11:22and here's something too.
- 11:23And the kid just glazes over and is like, whatever.
- 11:26- I'm sorry, wait, wait.
- 11:28Sorry that's not a reptile.
- 11:30- Lemme make, I actually wanna make sure,
- 11:32I believe the reticulated python
- 11:33is the longest snake in the world.
- 11:36- Boy, if you get this wrong.
- 11:38- I don't have that one in my head.
- 11:38- Get in the comments! (players laughing)
- 11:41- Yeah, reticulated python, okay, we're good, we're good.
- 11:43- Did you know that there are some reptiles
- 11:46that have a light sensing organ on the top of their head
- 11:49so they can sense shadows
- 11:52that might be coming from something that's coming for them.
- 11:55It's like a third eye.
- 11:57- As you say that you watch as that appears
- 12:04on Ronnie's head and he goes,
- 12:06(gasps) there's a shadow downstairs.
- 12:11- Oh my God.
- 12:12- That gave me fucking goosebumps.
- 12:13- Ronnie, you're terrifying. (players laughing)
- 12:16- And I'd like you to know
- 12:18that there's little creatures in the sea
- 12:20that make little lights,
- 12:23and they're quite pretty little lights.
- 12:25You can ask officers Juan de Veve,
- 12:27he'll tell you he likes them.
- 12:29- (chuckles) And its C'est Magnifique.
- 12:31(players laughing)
- 12:32- And it's a little strange
- 12:34that those little critters would make those lights,
- 12:36'cause why would they?
- 12:37They only make 'em when they get disturbed,
- 12:39and you think that that would cause attention
- 12:42from little fishes that want to eat 'em.
- 12:44But here's what happens.
- 12:46Those little fishes, when they suck 'em up,
- 12:48they glow so bright, and now that little fish is glowing.
- 12:54There's a little target on its back.
- 12:56See, that little fish ain't the only fish in the sea.
- 13:00- Shit.
- 13:01- Go ahead and make a menacing,
- 13:05make any kind of check you want.
- 13:07Make whatever check you wanna make.
- 13:08(players laughing)
- 13:10Oh my god.
- 13:11I rolled a one, oh no, I got plus two.
- 13:14- You got plus two. - So that's three.
- 13:16- So he's gonna make his sturdy check here, you got a three.
- 13:20- How about, Well, I mean look,
- 13:22I don't wanna actually him. - Okay.
- 13:24- I just, after I said that I punch him.
- 13:26- [Brennan] Oh, you punched him.
- 13:27- Which is the same check for me, so I still rolled a one.
- 13:30- So, he's gonna roll his sturdy.
- 13:33He rolled a three.
- 13:34Unbelievable. (players laughing)
- 13:36- Oh my god.
- 13:39- He rolled a three.
- 13:41- Just flick him in the forehead.
- 13:42- And then, yeah, he already has sustained a heavy injury.
- 13:45So, Fix, you go cock back.
- 13:48He goes, wow, that's really interesting.
- 13:51(blows thudding) (Brennan groaning)
- 13:56- I've stepped back. (players laughing)
- 13:59- I heard that you might be thinking of a name change.
- 14:01Did you know that the North Pole is actually a south pole?
- 14:05Because when you look at a compass, it points north.
- 14:08But the North Pole of the compass is what's pointing north
- 14:11and north poles point to the south poles.
- 14:14So when we go to the North Pole,
- 14:15it's actually the South Pole.
- 14:16I think maybe you also
- 14:19aren't exactly what you've been calling yourself.
- 14:21- It's not enough for this. - Everybody get their pens out
- 14:25- Write that down. - The South Pole.
- 14:27- It's very nice to see you again.
- 14:29Did you know that diners and the history of diners
- 14:32actually originate from dining cars on trains?
- 14:36And the very first diners were actually
- 14:38dining cars of trains that had been taken out of service
- 14:41and were used stationarily as restaurants
- 14:44'cause they were cheap and affordable.
- 14:47- Fix just looks at her.
- 14:51He can't think of any facts.
- 14:53(players laughing)
- 14:58Like ostriches have a penis that doesn't have,
- 15:01it's not like a true hole,
- 15:02like it's not like a full flesh tube with a hole through it.
- 15:05It's got like a channel that you can,
- 15:07that like actually has a split.
- 15:10So it's just like a fold and it's like this
- 15:13where there's not actually a full close
- 15:16and the semen runs down that.
- 15:20If you're curious. - Thank you.
- 15:24- I've never had a Chili Cheese Frito before.
- 15:25That was my first one.
- 15:28I like it.
- 15:29- Would it be like if human babies ate hair?
- 15:31- It'd be like if human babies ate skin.
- 15:34Hair's really not an easy thing to digest.
- 15:37- That's true. - Keratin, yeah.
- 15:39Just like chewing on fingernails.
- 15:41- Although, breast milk is just a variation of blood.
- 15:46Like it's actually, it is essentially blood,
- 15:50but it doesn't have any heme in it and other stuff.
- 15:53But it's like the same processes.
- 15:54- That's like the pathway through which it evolved.
- 15:58'Cause everything's based on some preexisting structure.
- 16:01So it's just like you're just bleeding the good stuff
- 16:04outta your nipples. - Basically, yeah.
- 16:08Wild. Wild.
- 16:11Having a baby- - Not these nipples.
- 16:12- Has given me like a, oh, here's some
- 16:15other new weird shit to learn about.
- 16:18- Yeah. - Yeah.
- 16:19- But, the original evolution, like pre,
- 16:23there's pre nipple lactation,
- 16:24so platypus lactate, but they don't have nipples
- 16:27and they just sweat it out.
- 16:29Just like comes out of a patch in their skin,
- 16:31they just sweat milk.
- 16:33And their baby's like.
- 16:35- So do the babies like lick their skin?
- 16:36- [Hank] Lick it up, yeah, they lick the skin.
- 16:38- Australia is- - It's not really Australia.
- 16:42- Now, this is Australia's fault.
- 16:44- In Australia that is just
- 16:47beyond the comprehension of mortal man.
- 16:50(players laughing) - Yeah, it's really weird.
