  1. 0:00I have 25 new words for you today and
  2. 0:03I'm gonna try and teach you them in a
  3. 0:06different kind of way
  4. 0:07they're great for the GRE but to be
  5. 0:10honest they're useful for anybody the
  6. 0:12idea that I had was to ask chat GPT Link
  7. 0:16in the description to write a poem based
  8. 0:20on these 25 new words these are words
  9. 0:23that haven't appeared in any of my other
  10. 0:25vocab videos brand new ranging from
  11. 0:29medium difficulty to really show off
  12. 0:32kind of words so we're going to get
  13. 0:34straight into the poem and try and learn
  14. 0:36the words at the same time what I'm
  15. 0:39going to do is read each stanza of the
  16. 0:41poem and then teach you the words that
  17. 0:43were contained in that stanza the first
  18. 0:46stanza is the static air was thick with
  19. 0:50malodor Ascent as we tried to Stave off
  20. 0:53the fights demolish the walls that held
  21. 0:56Us in but the stingy words cut us like a
  22. 1:00knife
  23. 1:01okay so static means still and
  24. 1:06unchanging a bit like the word
  25. 1:07stationary nothing's changing it's
  26. 1:10static
  27. 1:12melodorous an odor is a bad smell and
  28. 1:16Mal means bad so this is a truly bad
  29. 1:20scent or smell smells terrible
  30. 1:24as we try to Stave off the fight
  31. 1:28Stave is like an ancient kind of stick
  32. 1:30so to push something off with a stick to
  33. 1:34Stave it off is to avoid it to avert it
  34. 1:37to stop it from happening the lawyer
  35. 1:40tried to Stave off bankruptcy try to
  36. 1:42avoid it to not let it happen to Stave
  37. 1:45It Off
  38. 1:46then they tried to demolish the walls
  39. 1:50you may know this word already but
  40. 1:52demolish means to break something down
  41. 1:54Destroyer like demolishing a building
  42. 1:58but these stingy words cut as like a
  43. 2:00knife
  44. 2:01this is the first of the slightly badly
  45. 2:05used words they didn't quite capture the
  46. 2:07meaning you may not agree with that but
  47. 2:10stingy means being Frugal with your
  48. 2:13money being tight it's a negative word
  49. 2:17it's derogatory if you call someone
  50. 2:19stingy it means they're not generous
  51. 2:22it's the opposite of generous they're
  52. 2:24tight with their money they don't give
  53. 2:26things away so I'm not quite sure how
  54. 2:28words can be stingy but there we go next
  55. 2:32stanza
  56. 2:33temperamental outbursts left us
  57. 2:36stupefied as we try to navigate The
  58. 2:39Strife we reiterated and repeated our
  59. 2:42points but the other side remained
  60. 2:44unyielding in their life
  61. 2:47temperamental do you notice is
  62. 2:49pronounced very differently to how it's
  63. 2:51written if I pronounce it how it's
  64. 2:53written it would be temperamental it's
  65. 2:55temperamental a bit like temperature is
  66. 2:59pronounced differently to how it's
  67. 3:00spelled by the way it means being
  68. 3:03unpredictable you could just say having
  69. 3:06a temper but it's not about just being
  70. 3:08angry it's where someone's mood is
  71. 3:10capricious fickle you can't see where
  72. 3:13they're going they're emotional a bit
  73. 3:15unstable temperamental and being left
  74. 3:17stupefied this is a great word it's like
  75. 3:20you're stunned you're stunned into
  76. 3:21silence you're left unable to think or
  77. 3:25feel properly you're astonished you're
  78. 3:27shocked you're stupefied now you
  79. 3:30actually may not know the next word in
  80. 3:32the next line strife
  81. 3:34even though that wasn't one of the 25
  82. 3:36Strife is difficulty troubles they're
  83. 3:39trying to navigate chart the Waters of
  84. 3:42the troubles
  85. 3:43work their way through them we
  86. 3:46reiterated that was one of the other
  87. 3:48words I wanted to teach to reiterate is
  88. 3:50to say something again basically to
  89. 3:52repeat yourself the prefix re at the
  90. 3:55beginning is a bit of a giveaway because
  91. 3:57re always means to repeat
  92. 3:59but the other side remained unyielding
  93. 4:01not giving away anything if you're
  94. 4:05unyielding you're not surrendering
  95. 4:07you're not giving up you're not giving
  96. 4:08anything but it's not just about a
  97. 4:10battle it could be a negotiation if
  98. 4:14you're not giving any ground in a
  99. 4:16negotiation you could be said to be
  100. 4:18unyielding and these people are being
  101. 4:20unyielding in their life
  102. 4:23here's a really interesting one but
  103. 4:25let's explain it after I've read the
  104. 4:27stanza Foursquare in their beliefs they
  105. 4:30stood spiteful words spilling from their
  106. 4:33lips we seethed with anger trying to
  107. 4:36cultivate a sense of Peace amidst the
  108. 4:39chaos and the dips to be four square is
  109. 4:42to be solid and robust I looked up the
  110. 4:45etymology the origin of that word and
  111. 4:48it's basically that A square has four
  112. 4:50sides so in medieval times it was
  113. 4:52thought to be super robust I guess a
  114. 4:54square is robust but either way to be
  115. 4:56four square behind someone is to be
  116. 4:58solidly supporting that person what
  117. 5:01about spiteful it means resentful
  118. 5:05holding spite against someone bitterness
  119. 5:08wanting ill for them and these words
  120. 5:10were spilling from their lips
  121. 5:12and the next two lines are kind of
  122. 5:15interesting here a little bit
  123. 5:16contradictory to soothe with anger fits
  124. 5:19perfectly is to see this to be full of
  125. 5:21hate and fury and you can barely hold it
  126. 5:24in but then it goes on to say that we're
  127. 5:27trying to cultivate which means to grow
  128. 5:29to spread to cultivate a sense of peace
  129. 5:33amidst the chaos and the dips I'm not
  130. 5:36quite sure what the dips has to do with
  131. 5:38anything but how would seething with
  132. 5:40anger mean that you're trying to
  133. 5:42cultivate a sense of Peace it doesn't
  134. 5:43really fit this poem's a little bit
  135. 5:45Dodge but it's entertaining let's admit
  136. 5:47and hopefully we're learning loads of
  137. 5:49words let's keep going the argument was
  138. 5:52Rife with misunderstanding as we fought
  139. 5:54with all our might but the dour looks
  140. 5:57and unyielding stances left us feeling
  141. 6:00drained and tired no respite in sight to
  142. 6:04be Rife is to be full of something for
  143. 6:06it to have spread everywhere if you say
  144. 6:09a disease was Rife it means it spread
  145. 6:11across a community if an argument is
  146. 6:13Rife with misunderstanding it means it's
  147. 6:15full of that misunderstanding great word
  148. 6:18Rife
  149. 6:19but the dour looks
  150. 6:22to be Dao is to be gloomy solemn serious
  151. 6:26Sullen never really smiling always kind
  152. 6:29of frowning not necessarily angry just
  153. 6:32serious in a kind of gloomy way
  154. 6:35and then unyielding we already know a
  155. 6:37stance is a position so they have gloomy
  156. 6:40serious looks an unwavering position and
  157. 6:44they left these guys feeling drained and
  158. 6:46tired with no respite in sight respite
  159. 6:50is like relief safety a break a pause
  160. 6:54and there's no pause no break in sight
  161. 6:57it's just going on and on and on we
  162. 6:59search for a way to reconcile but the
  163. 7:03compunction we felt was nebulous at best
  164. 7:06lovely the risible attempts are
  165. 7:08rejoinder were met with flummox looks
  166. 7:11and a retroactive test
  167. 7:14the logic here is amazing chat GPT is
  168. 7:17trying his best to make a poem out of my
  169. 7:19mangle 25 words but there we go
  170. 7:21hopefully you're learning loads of new
  171. 7:23words today
  172. 7:24okay we search for a way to reconcile to
  173. 7:28bring two sides together that's
  174. 7:29reconcile again these are bonus words
  175. 7:31here so it must be 30 really is the real
  176. 7:34total anyway the compunction compunction
  177. 7:37is like guilt and pity the most common
  178. 7:40way to use the word is to say they had
  179. 7:43no compunction to phrase it in the
  180. 7:44negative
  181. 7:46she felt no compunction while
  182. 7:48negotiating the best deal no pity for
  183. 7:50the other side no guilt no regret here
  184. 7:52they're phrasing in the positive but the
  185. 7:55guilt the compunction we felt was
  186. 7:57nebulous cloudy Misty vague ethereal at
  187. 8:01best as in it's not tangible they're not
  188. 8:03feeling much compunction much guilt as I
  189. 8:06said normally you use compunction in the
  190. 8:08negative to have no compunction about
  191. 8:09something no guilt and there we go we've
  192. 8:11learned another word as well nebulous is
  193. 8:13cloudy like a nebula in space when you
  194. 8:17look at it in the telescope it's cloudy
  195. 8:19and hard to spot the individual elements
  196. 8:22I think they originally felt that
  197. 8:24galaxies far away were actually nebulous
  198. 8:26they didn't actually realize there were
  199. 8:28other galaxies out there in the universe
  200. 8:29but now we know there are but nebulous
  201. 8:32can mean anything that's cloudy unclear
  202. 8:34vague and it continues the risible that
  203. 8:37means the risable mockable shameful
  204. 8:41embarrassing attempts I looked down on
  205. 8:44those attempts they're risible at a
  206. 8:46rejoinder a rejoinder is a reply a
  207. 8:50rebuttal
  208. 8:51counter argument so they had these
  209. 8:54embarrassing awful attempts at a counter
  210. 8:57argument
  211. 8:58and when they did that they were met
  212. 9:01with flummoxed confused flummoxed is a
  213. 9:04fantastic word to say confused not
  214. 9:07knowing what's going on bemused looks
  215. 9:09and at that point the stanza was kind of
  216. 9:12making sense that if you have these
  217. 9:14embarrassing awful attempts that's a
  218. 9:16reply it would get flummoxed looks no
  219. 9:19idea how they tried to segue in this
  220. 9:22retroactive test they did their best
  221. 9:24good job Champion anyway retroactive
  222. 9:27means looking backwards imagine you
  223. 9:30apply a tax for the next year coming up
  224. 9:32ahead that's fine no one complains but
  225. 9:35if you make it retroactive so if you
  226. 9:37make it apply to previous years often
  227. 9:39people get angry because they say like
  228. 9:41we didn't know that was coming
  229. 9:44that's not fair we didn't know at the
  230. 9:46time because it's retroactive it applies
  231. 9:49it's active retro going backwards
  232. 9:51imagine a teacher changing the rules
  233. 9:53retroactively so that the thing you did
  234. 9:56that was within the rules in the class
  235. 9:58suddenly is now against the rules and
  236. 10:01you didn't even know at the time it's
  237. 10:03kind of unfair often a lot of
  238. 10:05retroactive things not always but
  239. 10:06commonly final stanza we were left to
  240. 10:10debunk the lies and the myths in the
  241. 10:13proximity of our own frustration
  242. 10:15but maybe someday we'll find a way to
  243. 10:18find peace and a moment of elation
  244. 10:21get Beauty Sleeping in there at the end
  245. 10:23all done
  246. 10:25okay we were left to debunk it means
  247. 10:29prove something wrong usually a
  248. 10:31conspiracy theory or a lie to show up
  249. 10:34the flaws in the logic to reveal the
  250. 10:37flaws and the logic or the flaws in the
  251. 10:40evidence to debunk something show it to
  252. 10:42be nonsense
  253. 10:44in the proximity it's a lovely word in
  254. 10:48the local area to something I am
  255. 10:51proximate to a local bakery I am near to
  256. 10:54it are you in the proximity of a good
  257. 10:56school are you nearby to a good school
  258. 10:59obviously it can also be metaphorical in
  259. 11:02the proximity of our own frustrations
  260. 11:04they're getting very near to being
  261. 11:06frustrated but maybe someday we'll find
  262. 11:08a way to find peace and a moment of
  263. 11:10elation joy and Elation happiness
  264. 11:15so if any of these I would say 30 words
  265. 11:18were new to you please let me know in
  266. 11:21the comments and also let me know if you
  267. 11:23enjoy this way of learning new GRE
  268. 11:25vocabulary or vocabulary for anyone who
  269. 11:28just wants to improve their English in
  270. 11:30the form of chat GPT outputs poems I
  271. 11:34could make it do stories anything thank
  272. 11:37you for watching and have a wonderful
  273. 11:38day
