25 ALDI Products So Good They DESTROY Expensive Brands — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00A tub of vanilla ice cream that costs
- 0:02almost five times as much per scoop just
- 0:05lost a blind taste test by 35 points.
- 0:09Not to another premium label, to a
- 0:10supermarket house brand most people walk
- 0:12straight past. And that's not a fluke,
- 0:15it's a pattern. Across laundry powder,
- 0:17stain spray, crackers, olive oil,
- 0:19coffee, whiskey, and wine, the same
- 0:22thing keeps happening.
- 0:24The expensive name loses or ties to the
- 0:26cheap one. And the only people who seem
- 0:28surprised are the ones paying full
- 0:30price. Here's why that matters for your
- 0:32household. Groceries are one of the few
- 0:34bills you pay every single week. You
- 0:36can't switch them off, you can't put
- 0:38them on hold. So, every dollar of brand
- 0:40premium you pay on a bottle of stain
- 0:41spray or a box of crackers comes back
- 0:43around 52 times a year. For most
- 0:45families, that's not a rounding error.
- 0:47It's a car rego, it's a school
- 0:49excursion, it's the power bill in
- 0:51winter. And the big brands spend
- 0:52enormous amounts of money on advertising
- 0:54precisely so you never stop to ask what
- 0:57you're really getting for that extra
- 0:58cash. If you care about what's really in
- 1:00your food and you're tired of the lack
- 1:02of transparency, hit the like button and
- 1:04especially the hype button right now.
- 1:06Every hype helps this video reach more
- 1:08people who deserve to know what's really
- 1:10going on behind many products and major
- 1:12corporations. Share this video with your
- 1:14friends and family. The more people see
- 1:17it, the harder it becomes to keep the
- 1:19truth hidden.
- 1:21The supermarket we're talking about is
- 1:23Aldi. In August 2026, Canstar Blue named
- 1:26Aldi Australia's best rated supermarket
- 1:29for the ninth year in a row. In Choice's
- 1:32September 2026 basket survey, a 17-item
- 1:36trolley cost $68.89
- 1:38at Aldi compared with $74.47
- 1:42at Woolworths, $76.79
- 1:44at Coles, and $92.69
- 1:47at IGA. And the ACCC's supermarket
- 1:51inquiry found that Aldi sells almost
- 1:53entirely private label products, while
- 1:56at Coles and Woolworths only about a
- 1:57quarter of sales are home brand. But
- 2:00cheap is only half the story. The real
- 2:02question is whether the product in the
- 2:03plain packet is actually as good as the
- 2:05famous one. So we didn't rely on
- 2:07marketing, we went through independent
- 2:09lab tests, blind taste panels,
- 2:11international judging competitions and
- 2:12large consumer surveys, much of it
- 2:14published in the last year or so. What
- 2:16came back was 25 ALDI products that
- 2:20match or beat the expensive brands,
- 2:22sometimes by a humiliating margin. We'll
- 2:24also tell you where ALDI falls flat,
- 2:27because it does. And knowing that saves
- 2:29you money, too.
- 2:30We start at number 25, and number one is
- 2:33that ice cream result, which is going to
- 2:35make you look at the freezer aisle very
- 2:36differently.
- 2:38Number 25, Brooklea yogurt. Chobani did
- 2:41something clever in Australia. It made
- 2:43thick, high-protein yogurt feel like a
- 2:45lifestyle product with clean white tubs
- 2:48and a price to match. Shoppers learned
- 2:50to associate that look with quality. The
- 2:53survey data tells a different story. In
- 2:55Canstar Blue's 2026 yogurt ratings,
- 2:58based on feedback from 2,397
- 3:00Australians, and published in May 2026,
- 3:04ALDI's Brooklea range came second out of
- 3:0616 brands. Only Gippsland beat it.
- 3:09Chobani came sixth. Jalna, Farmers
- 3:12Union, Activia, and YoPro all finished
- 3:15behind the ALDI brand, as well. And it's
- 3:17not just a survey, people are voting
- 3:19with their trolleys. In ALDI's 2026
- 3:22People's Picks, based on DoorDash
- 3:24ordering data from January to June, a
- 3:26Brooklea No Added Sugar Strawberry
- 3:28Yogurt Pouch at $1.29
- 3:31was named the top product across the
- 3:33whole awards. So here's the tip. Flip
- 3:36both tubs over and compare the protein
- 3:38and sugar per 100 g, then the unit
- 3:40price. The logo on the lid isn't doing
- 3:42anything for your breakfast. That was
- 3:44the dairy fridge. Number 24 is a product
- 3:46so boring that nobody ever thinks about
- 3:48it, which is exactly why brands can
- 3:50charge what they like. Number 24,
- 3:52Confidence paper towels. Paper towel is
- 3:54one of those purchases that runs on
- 3:56autopilot. You grab the pack you always
- 3:58grab and you never question it.
- 4:01Viva and Handy have spent decades
- 4:03building that habit.
- 4:04In a Canstar of more than 2,400
- 4:07Australians reported in November 2025,
- 4:10Aldi's Confidence paper towel at $2.99
- 4:14for a three-pack scored four stars for
- 4:16absorption, four for quality, four for
- 4:18effectiveness, and a full five stars for
- 4:20value for money.
- 4:22Viva and Handy both got four stars for
- 4:24quality and effectiveness, but only
- 4:26three stars for value.
- 4:28The overall winner was Who Gives a Crap
- 4:30with five stars for quality, but only
- 4:32three for value.
- 4:33Coles Ultra and Woolworths Essentials
- 4:35both came in at three stars on
- 4:38quality.
- 4:39The famous names didn't pull ahead. On
- 4:42price, they fell behind. Paying extra
- 4:45for a logo on something you literally
- 4:46throw away is the definition of a brand
- 4:48tax, and that brings us straight to the
- 4:50cleaning cupboard. Number 23, Power
- 4:53Force toilet cleaner.
- 4:55Walk down the cleaning aisle at any big
- 4:56supermarket and you'll see bright
- 4:58bottles promising to kill 99.9%
- 5:01of germs with price tags that climb
- 5:03every year. Aldi sells its own for a
- 5:05couple of dollars. In August 2026,
- 5:08Aldi's $2 Power Force toilet cleaner won
- 5:10in Finder's Customer Satisfaction Awards
- 5:13scoring 4.43 out of five, taking gold
- 5:15for most recommended and also winning
- 5:17for value. Finder's Taylor Blackburn
- 5:20said that when a product wins across
- 5:21categories like most loved and top value
- 5:23at the same time, it signals that
- 5:25consumers are getting bang for their
- 5:27buck.
- 5:28Other Power Force cleaning products also
- 5:30picked up awards in the same round.
- 5:32Here's the bit most people miss. The
- 5:34active ingredients in toilet cleaners
- 5:37are pretty standard. Acids to remove
- 5:39limescale, surfactants to lift grime,
- 5:41sometimes bleach for disinfecting.
- 5:44The shape of the bottle and the ad with
- 5:46the cartoon bubbles don't clean
- 5:48anything. So, check the label for what
- 5:49it actually contains, check the unit
- 5:51price, and stop paying for the
- 5:53television campaign. That was the
- 5:54bathroom. Now, let's go to the Christmas
- 5:56table, where one taste test produced a
- 5:59result the big two probably didn't enjoy
- 6:01reading. Number 22, Kringle & Co fruit
- 6:04mince pies. Every year, the major
- 6:06supermarkets put huge effort into their
- 6:08Christmas ranges. The packaging gets
- 6:10fancier, the names get longer, and the
- 6:12prices creep up.
- 6:14In a Choice blind taste test, Aldi's
- 6:16Kringle & Co fruit mince pies came out
- 6:18on top with 42% of the vote, ahead of
- 6:21Woolworths at 39% and Coles at 19%.
- 6:25They were also the cheapest at 57 cents
- 6:27a pie, or $3.39
- 6:31for a six-pack. One taster said,
- 6:34"It tastes more decadent and luxurious
- 6:35than the others. I could easily eat a
- 6:37whole pack of six in one go." Now, to be
- 6:40fair, that was a close race with the big
- 6:42two's house brands, not a knockout of a
- 6:44boutique bakery,
- 6:45but the cheapest option was the one
- 6:47people preferred when they didn't know
- 6:48which was which. Strip away the
- 6:50packaging and Aldi keeps turning up at
- 6:52the front, which brings us to a jar
- 6:54that's been sitting quietly in fridges
- 6:56for years. Number 21, Coles mayonnaise.
- 7:00The mayonnaise shelf is full of big
- 7:02names, Kewpie with its cult following,
- 7:05Hellmann's with its blue ribbon,
- 7:08Heinz, Praise, all of them charging more
- 7:11than Aldi's squeezy bottle.
- 7:13Choice
- 7:14put 33 mayonnaises through a blind
- 7:16expert tasting, including products from
- 7:18Kewpie, Heinz, Hellmann's, Coles, and
- 7:21Woolworths. The winner was Aldi's Coles
- 7:27At 55 cents per 100 grams, the runner-up
- 7:30was Praise traditional mayo at 61% and
- 7:33it cost $1.01 per 100 grams, almost
- 7:37double.
- 7:38Only seven of the 33 products scored
- 7:40high enough to be recommended at all.
- 7:42There's another detail worth knowing.
- 7:43The Aldi mayo was made in Australia from
- 7:4598% Australian ingredients, while the
- 7:49Praise product was made from 35%
- 7:51Australian ingredients. And Choices
- 7:54experts flagged something that should
- 7:55bother everyone.
- 7:5732 of the 33 mayonnaises contained added
- 8:00sugar. And the judges said they were
- 8:02shocked and disappointed by how sweet
- 8:05many of the products were. So, when
- 8:07you're comparing jars, don't just
- 8:09compare price. Check the sugar line on
- 8:11the nutrition panel. The cheapest jar in
- 8:13that test was also the best. That
- 8:15doesn't happen by accident. Number 20, O
- 8:18So Natural Peanut Butter. Peanut butter
- 8:20is basically peanuts, maybe salt, maybe
- 8:23oil and sugar.
- 8:24So, why does one jar cost twice as much
- 8:26as another? Mostly branding.
- 8:28In Choices supermarket peanut butter
- 8:30test, Aldi's O So Natural Crunchy Peanut
- 8:33Butter scored 85% tying for second place
- 8:36overall with Sanitarium Natural Crunchy.
- 8:38Only Bega Simply Nuts Crunchy beat with
- 8:4187%. And the Aldi jar is 100% peanuts
- 8:45with nothing else added. Even Aldi's
- 8:47cheaper Bramwells Crunchy scored 78% at
- 8:51just 48 cents per 100 g.
- 8:54Choice also found that cult and boutique
- 8:56brands like Pic's scored below a plain
- 8:59supermarket home brand. This one matters
- 9:01for families because peanut butter is a
- 9:03daily item in a lot of homes. It's on
- 9:06toast before school. It's in sandwiches.
- 9:08It's in smoothies. If your jar is 100%
- 9:11peanuts, you're getting the same thing
- 9:12whether the label is famous or not. So,
- 9:15the move is simple. Read the ingredients
- 9:17list. If it says peanuts and nothing
- 9:19else, you've found your jar. Then pick
- 9:21the one with the lowest unit price. Next
- 9:23up is a dip that has quietly become one
- 9:25of Aldi's most loved products. Number
- 9:2719, Deli Originals hummus. Hummus is
- 9:30chickpeas, tahini, lemon, garlic, and
- 9:33oil. It's not complicated, yet the
- 9:35premium tubs can cost several times as
- 9:37much. In Choice's hummus taste test,
- 9:40Aldi's Deli Originals fresh traditional
- 9:42style hummus took first place overall
- 9:45with 78% beating Pilpel, Black Swan, and
- 9:48Abela. At the time, it cost $1.99 for
- 9:52200 g, and Choice noted that competing
- 9:54brands were around three times the
- 9:56price.
- 9:57That test was in 2022, but the love
- 10:00hasn't faded. In Aldi's 2026 People's
- 10:03Picks, the Deli Originals fresh hummus
- 10:06dip, now $2.49 for 200 g, won the gold
- 10:10in its category based on real ordering
- 10:12data.
- 10:13That's a nice illustration of something.
- 10:15Prices have gone up everywhere since
- 10:162022, and Aldi is no exception. But, the
- 10:20gap between the plain tub and the famous
- 10:22tub is still there. If you're putting
- 10:24out a platter for friends, nobody at the
- 10:25table is going to ask which brand the
- 10:27hummus is. They're going to eat it. Now,
- 10:29let's go to the kitchen sink, where one
- 10:31test produced a result the big brands
- 10:33really didn't like. Number 18, Tandil
- 10:37dishwashing liquid. Morning Fresh,
- 10:39Palmolive, and Fairy have owned the
- 10:41kitchen sink for generations. The ads
- 10:44show one drop cutting through a
- 10:47greasy pan. So, Choice tested it
- 10:49properly. In March 2024, Choice tested
- 10:5250 dishwashing liquids, and Aldi's
- 10:54Tandil products dominated the top of the
- 10:56table. Tandil Ultra Power Soak and
- 10:59Tandil Ultra Quick Dry both scored 90%
- 11:02at 40 cents per 100 ml.
- 11:05Tandil Ultra Odor Neutralizing scored
- 11:0785%.
- 11:09Choice's director of reviews and testing
- 11:11said they were great bargains at the
- 11:13checkout at just 40 cents per 100 ml.
- 11:16That's around a quarter of the price of
- 11:18other top-scoring detergents.
- 11:20But, here's the honest part, and it's
- 11:21important. In the same test, Tandil
- 11:23Ultra Antibacterial finished in a
- 11:25five-way tie for last place at 60%
- 11:28alongside Fairy Ultra Concentrate
- 11:31Antibacterial.
- 11:32Choice pointed out that several
- 11:34well-known brands, including Aldi, had
- 11:36products at both the top and the bottom
- 11:38of the leaderboard. So, the lesson isn't
- 11:40buy anything with an Aldi label, it's
- 11:42buy the specific product that tested
- 11:44well. Same brand, different bottle,
- 11:46completely different result. Before we
- 11:48go any further, if this list is already
- 11:50making you rethink what's sitting in
- 11:52your pantry, tap that like button right
- 11:54now. It takes 1 second and it tells the
- 11:56algorithm that Australians want this
- 11:58kind of information. Because what's
- 12:00coming at number 17 is a product that
- 12:02goes up against one of the most heavily
- 12:04advertised laundry brands in the
- 12:06country.
- 12:07Number 17, Di-San Oxy Laundry Soaker.
- 12:10Vanish NapiSan has spent years on
- 12:12television telling you that stains don't
- 12:14stand a chance. And to be fair, it
- 12:16works. The question is whether it works
- 12:18well enough to justify the price. In
- 12:21Choice's roundup of the best supermarket
- 12:23products that tested in 2025, Aldi's
- 12:25Di-San Pro Oxy Laundry Soaker and In
- 12:28Wash Booster cost 35 cents per 100 grams
- 12:32compared with $1.90 per 100 grams for
- 12:35the Vanish product it was compared
- 12:37against. That's around five times the
- 12:39price. In Choice's January 2026 stain
- 12:42remover test, Aldi's Di-San Pro Oxy
- 12:45Ultra White Powder scored 69% which
- 12:48Choice said delivered serious bang for
- 12:50your buck at roughly 1/5 of the price of
- 12:53the top scoring Sard powders. And it did
- 12:55particularly well on grass, mud, and
- 12:57food stains. The top powder in that test
- 13:00was Sard Superpower on 76% and Vanish
- 13:03NapiSan Oxy Action Gold scored 73%. So,
- 13:07yes, the famous names scored a few
- 13:08points higher, but a few points for five
- 13:10times the price is a terrible trade for
- 13:12most families, and shoppers seem to
- 13:14agree. The Di-San Oxy Laundry Soaker at
- 13:16$3.49
- 13:18for a kilo picked up bronze in its
- 13:20category in Aldi's 2026 People's Picks.
- 13:24That was the laundry basket. Now, let's
- 13:26go to the meat fridge, where Aldi had an
- 13:28extraordinary year. Number 16. Aldi's
- 13:32fresh meat, including Broad Oak Farms
- 13:34chicken and Jindurra Station beef,
- 13:36for a long time the assumption was that
- 13:37meat was where the big supermarkets and
- 13:39the local butcher had the edge. Aldi was
- 13:42for tins and cleaning products. That
- 13:44assumption is looking very outdated. In
- 13:47Finder's 2026 Supermarket Customer
- 13:49Satisfaction Awards, published in July
- 13:522026, Aldi won awards for beef burgers,
- 13:55beef mince, beef sausages, chicken
- 13:58thigh, chicken breast, chicken mince,
- 14:01chicken roast, and chicken drumsticks.
- 14:03Its chicken drumsticks scored 4.49 out
- 14:05of five for value and 4.46 for quality.
- 14:09And its chicken breast scored 4.37 for
- 14:12most loved and top value. Aldi itself
- 14:14says, "Finder named it the best
- 14:16supermarket for meat, winning 75% of the
- 14:18meat categories." People are buying it,
- 14:20too.
- 14:21In the 2026 People's Picks, Jindurra
- 14:24Station five-star five-star beef mince
- 14:26at $9.99
- 14:28for 500 g, and Broad Oak Farms
- 14:30RSPCA-approved
- 14:33chicken breast fillets at $10.99 a kilo
- 14:37to gold and silver in the Grill Master
- 14:39category. And in August 2026, Aldi said
- 14:42it had cut prices by up to 20% on
- 14:45staples like bacon, sausages, beef
- 14:48silverside, and lamb chops. Now, one
- 14:50honest note. In a Choice staff taste
- 14:53test of democracy sausages in 2025, Aldi
- 14:57snags came last, and Choice said they
- 14:59had the highest salt and fat content of
- 15:01the three supermarkets. So, buy the
- 15:03chicken and the mince with confidence,
- 15:05and check the nutrition panel on the
- 15:07processed stuff.
- 15:09Number 15. Beautifully butterfully.
- 15:12Lurpak is the butter people buy when
- 15:14they want to feel like they're treating
- 15:15themselves. Imported from Denmark,
- 15:17silver packaging, premium price. Western
- 15:19Star and Mainland have loyal followings
- 15:21too.
- 15:22In January 2026, Canstar Blue asked
- 15:252,086 Australians to rate the butter
- 15:28they'd bought in the previous 3 months,
- 15:30and Aldi's Beautifully Butterfully won
- 15:32the most satisfied customers award. It
- 15:35scored five stars for overall
- 15:37satisfaction, value, and packaging. And
- 15:40this isn't new. Beautifully Butterfully
- 15:42also won in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019,
- 15:472020, and 2022.
- 15:49In that same survey, Lurpak Spreadable
- 15:51earned five stars for taste, but only
- 15:53three for value.
- 15:55The taste experts have backed it up in
- 15:57the past, too.
- 15:58In an earlier Choice butter test, Aldi's
- 16:01unsalted Beautifully Butterfully was
- 16:03recommended with a score of 83% at far
- 16:06less than Lurpak or Western Star. One
- 16:08important tip, though,
- 16:10reporting on the 2026 award pointed out
- 16:12that the Beautifully Butterfully product
- 16:14it featured is a dairy blend with
- 16:16vegetable oil, not pure butter, because
- 16:19under Australian food standards, butter
- 16:21has to contain at least 80% milk fat.
- 16:24So, if you want real butter for baking,
- 16:26read the front of the pack carefully and
- 16:27grab the block. Both are good value.
- 16:29They're just not the same thing.
- 16:31Number 14, Just Organic and Moser Roth
- 16:33dark chocolate. Lindt has built a global
- 16:36empire on the idea that Swiss chocolate
- 16:38is simply better, and it charges
- 16:40accordingly. Here's what happened when
- 16:42Choice removed the wrappers. Choice
- 16:45blind tested 37 supermarket dark
- 16:47chocolates. First place went to Lindt
- 16:49Excellence 90% cocoa on 79%. Second
- 16:53place, just one point behind, went to
- 16:55Aldi's Just Organic 70% dark chocolate
- 16:58on 78% at $2.79
- 17:01a block. And it beat Lindt's own 70%
- 17:04bar, the Excellence smooth blend, which
- 17:07scored 73%.
- 17:09Senior food journalist Rachel Clements
- 17:11said the chocolates were judged on
- 17:12flavor, texture, aroma, and appearance,
- 17:15with nutrition included in the overall
- 17:17score. Aldi's other dark chocolate did
- 17:20well, too. Moser Roth Finest Dark 70%
- 17:23scored 73% at $2.39
- 17:26per 100 g, and Choice listed it among
- 17:30its best budget picks. It's made in
- 17:32Germany with a short ingredient list of
- 17:34cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, an
- 17:36emulsifier, and vanilla. Now, a reality
- 17:39check.
- 17:41Choice also gave these bars low
- 17:43nutrition scores because the dark
- 17:45chocolate still contains plenty of sugar
- 17:46and saturated fat. So, it's a treat, not
- 17:49a health food. But, if you're going to
- 17:50have a couple of squares after dinner,
- 17:52there's no reason to pay double for the
- 17:53privilege. That's the dessert course.
- 17:56What's coming at number 13 is a morning
- 17:58ritual that millions of Australians pay
- 18:00far too much for. Number 13, Expressi
- 18:03coffee capsules. Nespresso turned coffee
- 18:05capsules into a luxury product,
- 18:07boutiques, glossy ads, and a price per
- 18:10cup that most people never actually
- 18:13calculate. Aldi took a very different
- 18:15route. In August 2026, Canstar Blue
- 18:18announced that Aldi's Expressi had won
- 18:20its 2026 Most Satisfied Customers Award
- 18:23for coffee pods after surveying 365
- 18:27Australians. In the overall rankings,
- 18:29Expressi came first ahead of Nescafe,
- 18:32Nespresso, Starbucks by Nespresso, and
- 18:34L'OR. It's not a one-off, either.
- 18:36Expressi also won in 2020, 2022, 2023,
- 18:41and 2024. Vittoria took the title in
- 18:432025. The pods are also Australian.
- 18:47On Aldi's website, Expressi Milano
- 18:49capsules are listed at $7.99
- 18:52for 16, which works out to 50 cents a
- 18:55capsule, and are described as made in
- 18:57Australia from ground roasted coffee.
- 18:59So, think about your daily habit. Two
- 19:01capsules a day is more than 700 a year.
- 19:03Every 10 cents you save per capsule is
- 19:06more than $70 a year back in your
- 19:07pocket. And if you're drinking two
- 19:09coffees a day, that's real money. Which
- 19:11brings us neatly to the machine those
- 19:13pods go into.
- 19:14Number 12. The Expressi coffee machine.
- 19:18Here's where the gap between price and
- 19:19satisfaction gets almost ridiculous. In
- 19:22September 2026, Canstar Blue's 2026
- 19:26coffee pod machine ratings named Aldi's
- 19:28$79 Expressi machine the winner of its
- 19:32most satisfied customers award, based on
- 19:34260 Australians who had bought a machine
- 19:36in the past 3 years. Second place went
- 19:38to Nespresso by De'Longhi and third to
- 19:41Nespresso by Breville, with those
- 19:43machines ranging from $159
- 19:46to $1,499.
- 19:48It's the third time the Expressi has won
- 19:50after 2022 and 2024. Now, to be
- 19:54completely fair, it wasn't perfect. The
- 19:56Expressi got four stars for coffee
- 19:58quality and consistency and only two
- 20:01stars for design and the range of pods
- 20:03available. So, if you want dozens of pod
- 20:05flavors and a machine that looks like a
- 20:07piece of sculpture on your benchtop, the
- 20:08premium brands still have something to
- 20:10offer. But, if you just want a decent
- 20:12coffee in the morning without spending
- 20:13hundreds of dollars, the cheapest
- 20:15machine in the survey made its owners
- 20:17the happiest. That was the kitchen
- 20:19bench. Now, let's head to the bottle
- 20:21shop where Aldi has been collecting
- 20:23medals by the armful. Number 11. Corso
- 20:26Carista Pinot Grigio.
- 20:29Wine is one category where most people
- 20:31assume price equals quality.
- 20:34A $30 bottle must be better than a $10
- 20:36bottle, right? Wine judges don't see the
- 20:39price tag and that's where things get
- 20:41interesting.
- 20:42At the 2025 Melbourne International Wine
- 20:44Competition, which is judged blind by
- 20:46trade professionals, including
- 20:47sommeliers, restaurateurs, and retail
- 20:50buyers, Aldi's Corso Carista Delle
- 20:52Venezie Pinot Grigio 2024, priced at
- 20:56$9.99,
- 20:57won a double gold medal. It was also
- 20:59named Italy Pinot Grigio Wine of the
- 21:02Year. A double gold means the judges
- 21:04agreed unanimously.
- 21:07The competition received more than 1,000
- 21:09entries from seven countries, and this
- 21:11wasn't the only Aldi bottle on the
- 21:13podium. In the same competition, Aldi's
- 21:15El Toro Macho Bobal Tempranillo Reserva
- 21:182019 at $8.99
- 21:21also won double gold and was named Spain
- 21:24red wine reserva of the year. And its
- 21:26Corte Carista Chianti Superior at $11.99
- 21:30was named Italy Chianti wine of the
- 21:32year. Under $10, unanimous gold category
- 21:35winner.
- 21:36That's the kind of result a lot of
- 21:37wineries with fancy cellar doors would
- 21:39love to have. Number 10, South Point
- 21:41Estate Pinot Grigio.
- 21:44If the last one surprised you, this one
- 21:46is even more extreme. At the same 2025
- 21:50Melbourne International Wine
- 21:51Competition, Aldi's South Point Estate
- 21:54Pinot Grigio 2025, priced at just $4.59
- 21:59a bottle, won a gold medal.
- 22:01Reporting on the results said the wine
- 22:03beat bottles worth around 20 times its
- 22:05price. Across the competition, Aldi
- 22:07collected 18 medals, including three
- 22:10double golds. $4.59.
- 22:13That's less than a takeaway coffee in
- 22:14most cities. Now, a medal doesn't mean
- 22:17every palate will love it, and a cheap
- 22:19white is never going to taste like a
- 22:21rare aged red. But it does tell you
- 22:23something important. Trained judges
- 22:25tasting blind couldn't justify putting
- 22:27that wine below far more expensive
- 22:29bottles. So, if you're buying wine for a
- 22:31barbecue, a birthday, or a Friday night,
- 22:33don't assume the price on the shelf
- 22:35tells you anything about what's in the
- 22:37glass. Just remember, Aldi only sells
- 22:39alcohol in New South Wales, Victoria,
- 22:41the ACT, and Western Australia. We're
- 22:44into the top 10 now, and before we go
- 22:45any further, if these comparisons are
- 22:47changing the way you think about brand
- 22:49names, subscribe to the channel right
- 22:50now. Every week we dig into what
- 22:52Australian supermarkets and food
- 22:54companies would rather you didn't
- 22:55notice, and we back it up with evidence.
- 22:57Hit subscribe, because number nine takes
- 22:59on one of the most famous whiskey labels
- 23:01in the world. Number nine,
- 23:04Highland Black 8-year-old Scotch. Johnny
- 23:07Walker Black Label is the bottle people
- 23:09bring to a party when they want to look
- 23:11like they know their whiskey. It's
- 23:12everywhere and it's priced like a status
- 23:14symbol.
- 23:15Aldi's answer is a plain-looking blended
- 23:18Scotch that keeps winning awards. At the
- 23:202024 Spirits International Prestige
- 23:22Awards, Aldi's Highland Black 8-year-old
- 23:25Scotch whiskey won a gold medal while
- 23:27it's Highland Earl blended Scotch won
- 23:29platinum.
- 23:31At the 2025 London Spirits Competition,
- 23:33Highland Black scored 90 points. As of
- 23:36September 2026, Aldi's website lists
- 23:39Highland Black at $46.99
- 23:43while Dan Murphy's lists Johnny Walker
- 23:45Black Label at $55.90.
- 23:49To be fair, Johnny Walker Black is a
- 23:5112-year-old blend and the gap here is
- 23:53smaller than in most of this list, but
- 23:55$9 a bottle is still $9 and for a mixer
- 23:58with dry ginger, most people genuinely
- 24:00won't tell the difference. That was the
- 24:02Whiskey Cabinet. Number eight is a
- 24:04bottle that did something almost no
- 24:06supermarket drink ever does. Number
- 24:08eight,
- 24:09The Infusionist Apple and Rhubarb Gin
- 24:11Liqueur.
- 24:13Craft gin became one of the trendiest
- 24:14categories in Australian drinking with
- 24:16small distilleries charging premium
- 24:18prices for fancy botanicals.
- 24:21Aldi jumped in with its own range and
- 24:23the judges noticed. At the 2025 London
- 24:26Spirits Competition where entries are
- 24:28judged by bartenders, sommeliers, and
- 24:30spirits buyers on quality, value, and
- 24:32packaging, Aldi's The Infusionist Apple
- 24:35and Rhubarb Gin Liqueur scored 96 points
- 24:38and won best own label by value. The
- 24:41competition also awarded Aldi's
- 24:42Striganov Vodka Crush Lemon Lime 91
- 24:46points.
- 24:4796 points is an extraordinary score for
- 24:50any drink, let alone a supermarket
- 24:51label. It means a panel of people who
- 24:54taste spirits for a living rated it
- 24:56higher than most of what's on the shelf.
- 24:58That doesn't mean you have to like
- 24:59flavored gin, but if you do, the premium
- 25:01craft price isn't the only route to a
- 25:03great bottle. Now, let's go back to the
- 25:05pantry and to an oil
- 25:07that every Australian kitchen uses
- 25:09almost every day. Number seven, The
- 25:12Olive Tree Australian extra virgin olive
- 25:14oil. Olive oil is a category full of
- 25:16confusion and sometimes outright fraud
- 25:18around the world, so price feels like
- 25:20protection.
- 25:22Cobram Estate is Australia's best-known
- 25:24premium brand and it's a genuinely good
- 25:26oil.
- 25:27But look at this. Choice tested 30 olive
- 25:30oils using methods approved by the
- 25:32International Olive Council, including
- 25:34chemical testing and blind sensory
- 25:36panels. Cobram Estate extra virgin olive
- 25:39oil classic flavor scored 80% at $3.33
- 25:44per 100 ml.
- 25:46Aldi's The Olive Tree
- 25:48Australian extra virgin olive oil scored
- 25:5178%
- 25:52earned a silver medal rating and cost
- 25:54$1.87
- 25:56per 100 ml or $13.99
- 26:00for 750 ml.
- 26:03Choice testers described it as having a
- 26:05delicate herbaceous aroma with notes of
- 26:08tobacco leaf and menthol and a pungency
- 26:11lingering to a ginger twist.
- 26:14Two points behind and close to half the
- 26:15price and both are Australian. If you
- 26:18cook with olive oil every day, that's
- 26:19one of the easiest swaps on this list.
- 26:22Choice's advice is to keep oil in a
- 26:23cool, dark place and use it within 6
- 26:26months of opening. That was the pantry.
- 26:30Number six is a cheese and crackers
- 26:31result that embarrassed three household
- 26:33names at once. Number six, Damora Eaton
- 26:36crackers. Jatz is practically an
- 26:38Australian institution. Savoy and Ritz
- 26:41aren't far behind. They've been on
- 26:43cheese platters for decades. So, in
- 26:45December 2025, Choice ran a blind taste
- 26:48test. The result? Aldi's Damora Eaton
- 26:51won with 48% of the vote. Ritz got 22%
- 26:55Savoy got 19% and Jatz managed just 11%
- 26:59and the price eaten was $1.49
- 27:02for 225 grams while Savoy and Jatz were
- 27:05$4 each and Ritz was $3.50.
- 27:10Testers called eaten just right. Said
- 27:13Ritz was too soft and crumbly and found
- 27:15Savoy noticeably saltier with 848
- 27:18milligrams of sodium per 100 grams more
- 27:21than four times more votes than Jatz at
- 27:23well under half the price and shoppers
- 27:26were already on to it.
- 27:28In Aldi's 2026 people's picks Damora
- 27:31eaten original crackers took gold in the
- 27:33shark eatery champ category.
- 27:36Next time you're building a cheese
- 27:37board, this is the easiest win in the
- 27:39whole store.
- 27:40Number five takes us to the dishwasher
- 27:43where one number should change how you
- 27:45shop.
- 27:46Number five. Logix platinum dishwasher
- 27:49capsules.
- 27:50Finish is the brand that dominates
- 27:52dishwasher ads with glass that sparkles
- 27:54and plates that look brand new.
- 27:57In choices dishwasher detergent testing
- 27:59of 42 products Finish power ball
- 28:01ultimate plus all in one tabs tied for
- 28:04first place with 80% at $1.42
- 28:08per wash.
- 28:09Aldi's Logix platinum capsules scored
- 28:1275% at just 25 cents a wash.
- 28:16Choices head of reviews and testing said
- 28:18if you have a good dishwasher then you
- 28:20won't necessarily need to buy the best
- 28:21performing detergent. You can opt for a
- 28:24cheaper product instead. Here's the
- 28:26maths. If you run the dishwasher once a
- 28:28day the Finish tabs cost about $518 a
- 28:31year. The Logix capsules cost about $91.
- 28:34That's more than $400 a year for five
- 28:37percentage points. Now fair is fair.
- 28:40Choice found Logix was excellent on
- 28:42baked on cheese and egg yolk but weaker
- 28:45on red wine and coffee stains. And Coles
- 28:48own ultra advanced tablets scored 76% at
- 28:51just 15 cents a wash. So the cheapest
- 28:53good option isn't always Aldi, but it's
- 28:56never the famous brand. Number four,
- 28:58Monarch Crowns. The Streets Cornetto is
- 29:00one of the most recognizable ice creams
- 29:02in the country. Summer, beaches, the
- 29:04whole nostalgic package. So Choice ran a
- 29:07blind taste test between Aldi's Crowns
- 29:10and Streets Cornetto Classico. Every
- 29:12single taster preferred the Aldi cone
- 29:15and mistakenly thought it was the
- 29:16premium brand. Testers said the Aldi ice
- 29:19cream has more flavor and feels
- 29:21creamier, that the cone is crispier and
- 29:24stayed crisp all the way to the bottom,
- 29:26and that the Cornetto doesn't taste
- 29:28real. At the time of the test in
- 29:30November 2024, Crowns cost 92 cents
- 29:33each, while the Cornetto cost $2.25
- 29:36each. And here's the detail that
- 29:39explains everything.
- 29:41Choice pointed out that the Cornetto is
- 29:43technically a frozen dairy dessert with
- 29:46less than 10% milk fat, while the Crowns
- 29:48qualify as real ice cream with at least
- 29:5110% milk fat, less than half the price,
- 29:54and more actual ice cream. That's why
- 29:56reading the small print on the pack
- 29:57matters. Number three, Di-San Pro Ultra
- 30:01Degreaser with enzymes. Sard is the
- 30:04stain spray most Australians reach for
- 30:06without thinking. In Choice's stain
- 30:08remover test published in January 2026,
- 30:11Aldi's Di-San Pro Ultra Degreaser with
- 30:13enzymes and Sard Superpower Stain
- 30:16Remover Tougher Stains tied for first
- 30:18place among the sprays, both on 78%.
- 30:21But the Aldi spray cost 28 cents per 100
- 30:25ml, while Sard cost $1.90,
- 30:29which Choice described as less than a
- 30:31sixth of the price. The Aldi spray did
- 30:33better on sweat, tomato, and makeup
- 30:35stains, while Sard did better on blood
- 30:37and slightly better on grass and mud. So
- 30:40if your household deals with a lot of
- 30:41blood stains, maybe keep a bottle of
- 30:43Sard for those For everything else,
- 30:45you're paying more than six times as
- 30:46much for exactly the same overall score.
- 30:49Number two is the biggest household win
- 30:51on the entire list. Number two, Trimat
- 30:53Advanced Laundry Powder Concentrate. Omo
- 30:56has been the default laundry brand in
- 30:59Australian homes for generations. In
- 31:02Choice's laundry detergent testing,
- 31:04published in August 2026, more than 40
- 31:07detergents were tested against blood,
- 31:09grass, mud, oil, makeup, and baby food
- 31:12stains. For front loaders, Aldi's Trimat
- 31:15Advanced Powder tied for first with Omo
- 31:17Active Clean and Omo Ultimate, all on
- 31:2082% But, Trimat costs 44 cents a wash
- 31:23compared with 71 cents and $1.16
- 31:27for the Omo powders. For top loaders,
- 31:29Trimat came first outright on 66% ahead
- 31:33of Omo Ultimate on 62. Reporting on the
- 31:36results put the Trimat at $10.49
- 31:39for a 2 kilo box, while Omo Ultimate
- 31:42cost $36 for the same size. Shoppers
- 31:45agree. In Canstar Blue's May 2026
- 31:48laundry ratings, Trimat also won for
- 31:51laundry powder, with Omo coming second.
- 31:54Choice's Chris Barnes said, "Trimat tied
- 31:57for first place alongside the Omo
- 31:59products with a friendly price tag of 44
- 32:01cents per wash." And money-saving expert
- 32:04Joel Gibson estimated that swapping from
- 32:06Omo Ultimate saves more than $70 a year
- 32:09for a household washing twice a week. If
- 32:12you do a load every day, that's more
- 32:13than $250, and that brings us to number
- 32:15one, the result we opened with. Number
- 32:18one, Aldi's Indulge Vanilla Bean Gourmet
- 32:21Ice Cream. Häagen-Dazs built its brand
- 32:24on one idea, that it's the most
- 32:26luxurious ice cream in the freezer. The
- 32:28price reflects that. In October 2025,
- 32:31Choice blind tested 25 vanilla ice
- 32:34creams, including Häagen-Dazs,
- 32:36Connoisseur, Bulla, Peters, and Streets
- 32:39with a panel that included gelato
- 32:41makers, food consultants, and dairy
- 32:43specialists. The result, Aldi's Indulge
- 32:46Vanilla Bean Gourmet scored 89% at 60
- 32:50cents per 100 ml. Haagen-Dazs vanilla
- 32:54scored 54% at $2.95
- 32:57per 100 ml.
- 32:59Connoisseur Classic Vanilla scored 64%
- 33:02at $1.20.
- 33:04Let that sink in.
- 33:06The Aldi tub was almost five times
- 33:08cheaper and it beat Haagen-Dazs by 35
- 33:11points. The judges praised its nice
- 33:14vanilla aroma, creaminess, and great
- 33:16balance in flavor and fat.
- 33:18Choice's own verdict was simple, you
- 33:20can't buy flavor.
- 33:22To be completely fair, a Coles premium
- 33:24vanilla bean took first place just ahead
- 33:27of Aldi, but the most famous luxury name
- 33:29in the freezer finished well down the
- 33:31list. The most expensive tub was one of
- 33:33the worst, so that's the list. And now
- 33:35the part that matters most because Aldi
- 33:37is not magic. In Choice's 2025 sunscreen
- 33:40test, Aldi's Ombra 50+ tested at just
- 33:43SPF 26. To be fair, 16 of the 20
- 33:47sunscreens failed their claims including
- 33:49some expensive ones. In Choice's 2026
- 33:52nappy testing, Aldi's Mamia Ultra-Dry
- 33:55infant nappy scored 60% for absorbency
- 33:58against 90% for
- 34:01Huggies Pure and Sensitive.
- 34:03Choice rated the Romano Italian and
- 34:05diced tomatoes 58% against 80% for
- 34:08Mutti.
- 34:09And Omo laundry liquid was a Canstar
- 34:11favorite with shoppers, yet Choice's lab
- 34:13gave it just 59% and didn't recommend
- 34:16it. Popular isn't the same as proven, so
- 34:18here's what to do on your next shop.
- 34:20Stop judging by the logo, judge by the
- 34:22evidence. Use the unit price on every
- 34:25shelf ticket. Read the ingredients list
- 34:27and the nutrition panel. Swap the
- 34:29everyday staples where independent tests
- 34:31show the cheap version wins, like
- 34:32laundry powder, stain spray, dishwasher
- 34:35capsules, crackers, olive oil, and
- 34:37vanilla ice cream. And keep the premium
- 34:40brand only where it has actually earned
- 34:42it. Now, I want to hear from you. Which
- 34:44Aldi product have you switched to and
- 34:45never looked back? And which famous
- 34:47brand do you refuse to give up? Tell me
- 34:49in the comments.
