- 0:15>> All right, welcome back everyone to
- 0:16Unreal Engine Beginners Guide to
- 0:18building an environment. In the last
- 0:19lesson we left it off by setting some of
- 0:21the planks and adjusting the roof a
- 0:23little bit on the back end over here by
- 0:26changing up the plain static mesh and
- 0:28making sure that we're able to use
- 0:30modeling mode for it. And right now
- 0:31we're actually just going to continue on
- 0:33working with this roof and set up some
- 0:34diagonal beams to it.
- 0:37Right now I'm just trying to think on
- 0:38what kind of beam we can actually use
- 0:40for this area.
- 0:42And we might want to just make sure that
- 0:44we use a better type of a diagonal wood
- 0:48texture. So, I think instead of just
- 0:50using the plain ones that we had
- 0:51previously, we're going to go back onto
- 0:53our MegaScans folder, onto the free 3D
- 0:56assets group. And we might be able to
- 1:00make use out of
- 1:01maybe this one over here.
- 1:04Just going to drag it out to see how
- 1:05this looks like or actually just open it
- 1:07up, might be even easier.
- 1:09And
- 1:10just look at it. I think it's actually
- 1:12the same one that we had previously. I
- 1:14don't exactly want to use this one.
- 1:16Maybe this one over here.
- 1:18Or
- 1:21this one over here.
- 1:23That might actually look quite nice.
- 1:26But it looks a little bit too simple. I
- 1:27might want to just make use out of the
- 1:29same one that we have for here for our
- 1:32docks. I think this looks really nice in
- 1:34general. But I'm just worried that it
- 1:36might look a little bit too worn out on
- 1:38the edges of the roof. So, actually I
- 1:40don't think we are going to be using
- 1:42that. Let's go back onto the wooden
- 1:44beams and see how it looks like with the
- 1:46default ones, the ones that we had
- 1:48previously. So, these ones over here. If
- 1:50we were to just simply drag them out and
- 1:53make them a little bit larger like so.
- 1:56Just to see how they would look like.
- 1:58They might actually look quite nice once
- 2:00we're done with them.
- 2:01And actually
- 2:04we're going to try using them for now
- 2:06and worst case we can always just
- 2:07replace them later on. So, for now we're
- 2:10just going to put them up to the side
- 2:12like so.
- 2:15And just drag it out
- 2:18in this kind of a way.
- 2:21Going to turn off the edge snap
- 2:24to make sure we have some control over
- 2:26the rotation because obviously we want
- 2:27to make sure we align it to the edge of
- 2:29the roof just like that.
- 2:32It doesn't have to be exactly perfect,
- 2:34but it would be nice if we get
- 2:36the right kind of alignment. So, I think
- 2:39we just need to
- 2:40increase where our
- 2:42border is.
- 2:44And it's already looking pretty nice,
- 2:45but the bottom section is a bit thicker
- 2:48than the top one. So, I'm just going to
- 2:49rotate it just a little bit more. We're
- 2:51not worried about the height just yet.
- 2:53Just going to make sure that the
- 2:54alignment sits really nicely together.
- 2:58And I think that's going to do it. So,
- 2:59now we're just going to kind of lower
- 3:01this overall
- 3:03height or actually we're just going to
- 3:04leave it as is. And I think that's going
- 3:07to look much nicer. Just going to break
- 3:08up the entire shape of the silhouette of
- 3:11this house and we might even just get
- 3:13away with kind of increasing this
- 3:15overall
- 3:17width so we can just hide this bit over
- 3:19here.
- 3:20This way it just it just goes into this
- 3:22blank like so.
- 3:24So, now once we have this kind of a
- 3:26static mesh, we can actually play around
- 3:27with the way we have them set up.
- 3:30And for example, if you want to have a
- 3:32different beam and just see how that
- 3:34would look like, we can actually do so.
- 3:36It's actually quite simple to do. If we
- 3:38were to go to a Well, let's not go to a
- 3:40wooden post. If we were to go to a worn
- 3:43wooden beam for example, and if you want
- 3:44to change this with that, we can just
- 3:46simply drag and drop it into the static
- 3:49mesh like so and that should change it
- 3:51up. And although the mesh itself doesn't
- 3:54have the exactly the same kind of a
- 3:56scale, it would have its position
- 3:59properly set up as well as the
- 4:01alignment. So, even though it's not
- 4:03quite as big as we had previously
- 4:05because obviously it is a different
- 4:07mesh, it will have a different type of
- 4:08properties and whatnot. But more or
- 4:11less, it will be placed in the same kind
- 4:13of area. So, it's quite easy to set them
- 4:15up and fix up the mesh. So, whenever we
- 4:18want to for example see how it would
- 4:20look like and kind of visualize the
- 4:22entire beam, we can always do so by just
- 4:24playing around with the static mesh and
- 4:26just replacing it. So, for example, if I
- 4:27want to try out this beam,
- 4:30place it in here, we can do so. And for
- 4:33example, we'd obviously need to make it
- 4:34a little bit thicker and probably widen
- 4:36this up. And that might give us a better
- 4:40kind of a understanding on how the beam
- 4:42would sit within the edge of our
- 4:45rooftop. So, I think we're just going to
- 4:47go back to the default one actually. It
- 4:50might just have it looking much nicer.
- 4:53So, the one that I'm using was basically
- 4:56just a duplicate out of this and we're
- 4:57just making it thicker. And I think that
- 4:59in turn will look quite nice all
- 5:01together.
- 5:03So, all in all, I quite like the way
- 5:05this is turning out to be. But yeah, by
- 5:06just playing around with different
- 5:08variations and just replacing them, we
- 5:10can get some real nice results and just
- 5:12can visualize how the roof would look
- 5:14like. So, once we have one beam out, we
- 5:17can just hold Alt and simply drag to the
- 5:21other side.
- 5:23Switch it up. I think this time we need
- 5:24to use the edge snapping so we could
- 5:27make sure that we're actually rotating
- 5:29this 90° like so. So, sorry, 180°. So,
- 5:34we just flipped it all the way around.
- 5:36And of course, it's not going to look
- 5:37quite as nice because we're not going to
- 5:40have two edges kind of merging with one
- 5:44another. So, in order for us to fix
- 5:45that, what we're actually going to do is
- 5:47we're just going to grab one of them and
- 5:49I think we should just move it forward
- 5:51just a little bit. If it's a little bit
- 5:53too much,
- 5:54we want to make sure that it is set like
- 5:56in a half position of our previous beam.
- 6:00So, this like this over here. We're just
- 6:02going to make sure that the border that
- 6:05was going for this beam is actually
- 6:07going to not
- 6:09overlap or uh give us any of the gaps.
- 6:12And now we are getting some nice
- 6:14results, but I think we should probably
- 6:16lower these down a little bit actually.
- 6:18We're having a bit of a gap or actually
- 6:20we're going to leave it as is and we're
- 6:22going to get ourselves a real nice
- 6:24wooden beam in the middle and I think
- 6:26that'll kind of fix it up all together
- 6:28in regards to how it would look like for
- 6:31this house. So, for now we're actually
- 6:32going to leave it as is and maybe just
- 6:35maybe we might want to extend them just
- 6:38a little bit. So, I'm actually going to
- 6:39grab both of them and because they're
- 6:41using the same kind of position and by
- 6:44default the scaling is set with local
- 6:48we can just extend them like so and they
- 6:49should be extending both of them
- 6:51together.
- 6:52So, I think that's quite nice.
- 6:54Although we might need to move them up a
- 6:56little bit. So, I'm going to click W,
- 6:58then make sure that we are having a
- 7:00local gizmo.
- 7:02So, this one over here by switching this
- 7:04around making sure it's set the right
- 7:06one. We can now grab them both or
- 7:08actually just do them one by one and
- 7:11maybe that would be even better.
- 7:13And we're going to do them just a little
- 7:15bit like so.
- 7:17And you got to figure out what is the
- 7:19right height and I think
- 7:21Yes, I think we're going to need yet
- 7:23another decoration on the top. Just by
- 7:25default it looks quite plain. So, what
- 7:27we're going to do is actually we're
- 7:28going to grab
- 7:29another asset from Quixel library. So,
- 7:32let's go ahead and quickly add a Quixel
- 7:35bridge window and then we're going to
- 7:37search for
- 7:38um
- 7:39Let's try something like wood and
- 7:43Oh.
- 7:43wood and
- 7:45We're going to see what we get and 3D
- 7:48assets.
- 7:49And yeah, we're just going to actually
- 7:51use this one over here. I quite like
- 7:53this one. Modular handrail and post kit.
- 7:56And it has a really nice sort of a totem
- 7:59look. And I think that's going to look
- 8:01really nice on top of our roof. So,
- 8:03let's go ahead and download that and add
- 8:06it on to our project.
- 8:08And once we have it out in our 3D assets
- 8:11folder,
- 8:12we're going to grab ourselves a
- 8:16Should be over here. We're going to
- 8:17actually turn off the static mesh
- 8:20filter. If you're not having it, make
- 8:21sure you just have it enabled for here.
- 8:24So, once you have it enabled, you're
- 8:26going to be able to have this button.
- 8:28And then you should be able to see
- 8:29within our 3D assets folder all of your
- 8:32static meshes. So, we're just going to
- 8:33grab this one over here,
- 8:35put it on the ground like so.
- 8:38And actually
- 8:40I think I'll check how the wireframe
- 8:43looks like for it first. It does look
- 8:46quite dense, maybe. But I don't think
- 8:48we're going to use that too much. So, I
- 8:50don't think we need to set it up as the
- 8:52Nanite. The other meshes though, they
- 8:55look quite low topology. So, we're
- 8:57actually quite fine in regards to
- 9:00optimization. I think we don't need to
- 9:02do that. But worst case, we can always
- 9:04come back to the rest of the meshes and
- 9:05simply change up change them up to be
- 9:08Nanite. So,
- 9:10going back to the lid.
- 9:12We basically don't want to overuse the
- 9:13Nanite. We want to keep it as minimum as
- 9:16possible. And that just saves up on our
- 9:18performance because if we just do it too
- 9:20much, we're going to obviously make our
- 9:23computer just to
- 9:25use unnecessary calculations. But
- 9:27anyways, going back to placing this
- 9:29decoration onto the area, I reckon the
- 9:32easiest way would be if we were just
- 9:33just grab one of the
- 9:35beams that we had previously. And right
- 9:37now, we're just going to right click on
- 9:39the transformation, hit copy, that's
- 9:42going to copy all of the values within
- 9:43here. We're going to go back onto the
- 9:45decoration and then right click onto the
- 9:48rotation and hit paste. And that should
- 9:50give us the right kind of alignment,
- 9:51although right now it is set in the void
- 9:53that's actually quite opposite of that
- 9:56and we're actually just going downwards,
- 9:58so we obviously don't want that.
- 10:00So, the easiest way would be
- 10:02to fix it and we're just going to enable
- 10:03the snapping tool and rotate this by
- 10:06180° and that way we're just going to
- 10:09flip it completely around to go the
- 10:11other way like so. And we're going to
- 10:13still keep that kind of alignment since
- 10:14we're just going to again flip it just
- 10:17180° and that's going to go the other
- 10:19way. And now we're just going to
- 10:21position our
- 10:23decoration like so to the side.
- 10:25We're going to make it smaller because
- 10:27that's a little bit too big and we're
- 10:28just going to make it just big enough so
- 10:30it'll be covering the entire beam.
- 10:33I think that's going to be quite all
- 10:34right.
- 10:35Maybe we need to bring it up a little
- 10:37bit. So, I think the easiest way if we
- 10:39would have the transformation set up
- 10:41with the local position,
- 10:44always changing this around, we're going
- 10:46to just bring it up a little bit
- 10:48and that might look quite nice. Maybe
- 10:51I'll just make it just a little bit
- 10:52bigger just in case.
- 10:53Going to make sure I select that.
- 10:56Make it big enough.
- 10:58Big enough to just cover this entire
- 10:59beam. I think that's looking quite nice.
- 11:01Of course, the color right now doesn't
- 11:02match, but we're going to fix that in a
- 11:04moment. We're going to adjust the entire
- 11:07color just like we did with the boards
- 11:09previously. But for now, let's just
- 11:10focus on putting this on the upper end
- 11:12as well. So, we're just going to grab
- 11:14it, click W or actually E, make sure we
- 11:17have set the gizmo with the world local
- 11:21transformation. Then we're going to
- 11:23Actually, before that we're going to hit
- 11:24W, hold Alt, drag it out like so.
- 11:28Now we're going to hit E, make sure that
- 11:30the snapping tool is enabled. Rotate
- 11:33this 180° and we're going to have it
- 11:36placed in opposite way. Of course, this
- 11:38beam is a little bit set to the side, so
- 11:40we need to readjust our entire mesh like
- 11:43so.
- 11:44Just like that and we're just going to
- 11:45bring it back
- 11:47until we get it set to the right
- 11:48position. So, that is going to look
- 11:50quite nice. So, we're going to get a
- 11:52really nice kind of a setup for the side
- 11:54of the roof. So, I think that's going to
- 11:56look pretty good. Okay, so now we need
- 11:58to make sure we have something similar
- 12:00on the other end as well for the roof.
- 12:02We're going to grab all of these and
- 12:04we're going to hold uh we're going to
- 12:06click W, hold Alt and drag it to the
- 12:08side like so to make a duplicate.
- 12:12Going to click E.
- 12:13Going to rotate this around
- 12:1590° like so.
- 12:17Move it to the back and of course
- 12:19they're not going to be aligning because
- 12:21they are a little bit different types of
- 12:23roofs. So, we need to fix that up a
- 12:24little bit. I think
- 12:27we're just going to The easiest way to
- 12:29do that would be to just grab one beam
- 12:31and decoration and then rotate them
- 12:33around with the snapping turned off of
- 12:36course because we need to make sure we
- 12:38align it properly.
- 12:39So, we're going to grab both of them
- 12:41like so.
- 12:42Rotate it like so.
- 12:44And I think
- 12:46I'm just going to check how it looks
- 12:48like. Maybe I'm just going to click G
- 12:50also to make sure we don't see any
- 12:51gizmos while checking.
- 12:53Going to go onto the high scalability
- 12:55just so we could see the lighting.
- 12:57And
- 12:58yeah, I think that looks a little bit
- 13:00too excessive. We are okay with having
- 13:03some decoration over here. It brings the
- 13:05entire shape of the house, but having
- 13:07both of them just makes it look a little
- 13:10bit too much in my opinion. So, I think
- 13:12personally I'm just going to take uh get
- 13:14rid of the decorations, going to grab
- 13:16both of them, delete them, and set these
- 13:18both beams to be placed properly. So,
- 13:21right now
- 13:23just going to grab one of the beams like
- 13:24so.
- 13:26And just going to drag it or actually
- 13:28wrote uh first of all rescale this a
- 13:30little bit.
- 13:31Drag it downwards like so.
- 13:34And now we just got to figure out how
- 13:36we're going to do it with the end of
- 13:37this roof. And I think the easiest way
- 13:39would be to
- 13:41have it set
- 13:42just right above it like so. So it's
- 13:45just barely sticking out. I think that's
- 13:46going to look quite nice.
- 13:49But this bit though
- 13:50we should probably
- 13:52put back to the front a little bit so
- 13:54it'll be aligning with the beam that's
- 13:56next to it.
- 13:58Rotate this to be aligning as well.
- 14:00Like so.
- 14:02Make sure it's a little rotated
- 14:03properly.
- 14:04Maybe a little bit more.
- 14:06There you go.
- 14:08Now we're going to bring this
- 14:10uh scale down a little bit like so.
- 14:14I think that's going to look quite nice.
- 14:16And of course we're just going to switch
- 14:19it to local gizmo
- 14:21and bring this down a little bit.
- 14:23Maybe actually just make a bit smaller.
- 14:27Something like that. Maybe we need to
- 14:29actually raise this up a little bit.
- 14:31Now let me have a look at it.
- 14:33Since we want to obviously hide this
- 14:35beam over on the side.
- 14:37So I think
- 14:38this is going to look quite nice. Maybe
- 14:40just bring it down a little bit like so.
- 14:42And yeah, I think this is going to look
- 14:44pretty good.
- 14:45Maybe we should actually just
- 14:48lower this down a little bit as well.
- 14:51Like so. So by just tweaking a couple of
- 14:52values we're able to get a really nice
- 14:54shape to the edge of our roof. And I
- 14:57think yeah, we're just going to need to
- 15:00get ourselves a really nice beam on the
- 15:01top and that's just going to cover it up
- 15:03quite nicely. But before that actually I
- 15:06want to set up this end over here on the
- 15:09other side the diagonal beams. We're
- 15:11going to grab both of these since they
- 15:12have the right kind of alignment and
- 15:14make sure we have the world gizmo turned
- 15:17on.
- 15:18This one over here.
- 15:20And now we're just going to hold Alt,
- 15:23bring it to that other end,
- 15:24and this end, I don't think we should
- 15:27get a lot of
- 15:28of the beams sticking out. So, we're
- 15:30just going to grab one of them,
- 15:32make it smaller. This one doesn't matter
- 15:34too much because
- 15:36we as we can see, it actually goes
- 15:38inside of the roof, which hides the
- 15:40entire mesh.
- 15:42So, we're just going to focus on the
- 15:43very top section and bring it outwards
- 15:45like so.
- 15:47This beam on the other hand, we've got
- 15:49to make sure we get it right
- 15:50because we want to make sure we have it
- 15:52just barely enough sticking out in
- 15:54similar manner that we have the other
- 15:55side, and I think
- 15:57we were to just squish it down just a
- 15:59little bit more,
- 16:00like so,
- 16:02we're going to get some nice results out
- 16:03of it like so.
- 16:04So, that's pretty good.
- 16:06So, now we are left with actually just
- 16:09setting up the top section, and actually
- 16:12we are going to be adding a couple of
- 16:13extra frames of the beams to the sides
- 16:16of these rooftops,
- 16:18but I think we're going to do that
- 16:20later. I kind of want to sort out the
- 16:22very top section because right now it's
- 16:24just a plain kind of a
- 16:26mesh. So, we're going to do that in the
- 16:28next lesson. So, thank you so much for
- 16:29watching, and I'll see you in a bit.
