- 0:10at Michigan State University.
- 0:12We have a jam-packed schedule of slides this evening.
- 0:14We're gonna start with going over the move-in process
- 0:17and what to expect,
- 0:18definitely talk about packing and what not to bring
- 0:20as well as some general home and neighborhood information,
- 0:23definitely gonna cover dining
- 0:24and several important reminders
- 0:26to kind of aid in a smooth transition to campus.
- 0:29We will be doing the presentation
- 0:30and have the Q&A feature open at the same time.
- 0:34We do hope to answer general questions as they come in,
- 0:38but please note some of your questions
- 0:40if they're asked early on
- 0:41might be covered in later slides,
- 0:43and we'll defer to answering it at that point.
- 0:46Additionally, if there's a hyper-specific situation
- 0:49or something in which we need personal details
- 0:51to kind of help you along,
- 0:52we will refer that back to our main office.
- 0:55But just kind of watch for your Q&A being answered
- 0:58and we will get to as many as we possibly can.
- 1:01Additionally, this is gonna be recorded
- 1:03and will be shared to the Live On YouTube page
- 1:05for reference shortly.
- 1:07But to go ahead and get us started here,
- 1:09I am gonna transition to my lovely coworker, Bethany Balks,
- 1:13as she welcomes you to the university
- 1:15and gets you excited about move-in processes.
- 1:17- Thank you, Amanda.
- 1:19And as Amanda said,
- 1:19we're so excited to have you here.
- 1:21We're excited to talk about move-in.
- 1:23I can't believe it's just a few weeks away,
- 1:26but we're here,
- 1:27so we're excited to answer your questions.
- 1:29And so on behalf of the REHS and Culinary Services teams
- 1:32and Student Life,
- 1:33we're happy to have you here.
- 1:34So to kick things off,
- 1:36you'll see here we have our move-in texting channel.
- 1:38We're gonna talk about a few different tools
- 1:40we have available as resources to you,
- 1:42but texting is really a great one.
- 1:44We'd love to get you signed up for this.
- 1:46You'll see this in several more communications,
- 1:48but go ahead and get that set up.
- 1:50We're not gonna start too early,
- 1:51but we will start move-in week
- 1:52and we will be sharing timely updates.
- 1:55So if we start to have something with parking
- 1:58that needs to change,
- 1:59if there's something going on with construction,
- 2:01we work directly with our Emergency Operations Committee
- 2:04to help keep this channel up to date,
- 2:07so please do sign up for texts.
- 2:09All right, first things first,
- 2:11for those who are moving in
- 2:13between August 24th and 27th,
- 2:16you do need to select a move-in time.
- 2:18They are spread out over several days.
- 2:20And so if you have not done that yet,
- 2:22please go ahead and do so.
- 2:24It's in your My Housing account,
- 2:26and those are able to be added
- 2:28or changed as needed or deleted,
- 2:30so please go ahead and do that.
- 2:32It's important that you do have a time slot.
- 2:34We'll talk a little bit more in the next couple slides
- 2:36about those times.
- 2:38An important note about move-in times,
- 2:39this is your arrival window.
- 2:41So sometimes we get thoughts
- 2:43that if you have the 7:30 am to 8:00 am time,
- 2:46that means you have to be there at 7:30 on the dot,
- 2:49and that's how much time you have to do everything.
- 2:51That is not the case.
- 2:52That is your arrival window.
- 2:53We wanna pace everyone to make sure
- 2:55that our check-in locations and our unloading zones
- 2:58are able to properly accommodate you.
- 3:00So come, if you have a 7:30 to 8:00 am time,
- 3:04please come between 7:30 and 8:00 am.
- 3:06We also do not expect you
- 3:08or do we want you to take 30 minutes to unload,
- 3:10so that's another misconception.
- 3:12We really work hard to make that a quick, efficient process.
- 3:15You pull up with your vehicle, you stay,
- 3:18you get your belongings out,
- 3:19and then your driver moves that vehicle.
- 3:21So typically, unloading takes about 10-15 minutes
- 3:23at each hall.
- 3:24So just to clarify that,
- 3:25that is the thing you do
- 3:26before you move to long-term parking.
- 3:29And like I said, it's an arrival window.
- 3:32And then early arrivals.
- 3:33So if you are coming before August 25th,
- 3:38which is really when we start our major move-in days,
- 3:40you are part of early arrivals,
- 3:42and so those have a little bit of a different experience.
- 3:45There won't be as much staffing out and about,
- 3:48you won't see as many marked unloading zone areas
- 3:51because we don't have as many people moving in.
- 3:53So if you have an approved early arrival,
- 3:56for whether a department or a job
- 3:58or an athletics group.
- 4:01So you will come in,
- 4:02we ask that you come in
- 4:03in between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm on that day.
- 4:05You go to the nearest open Service Center,
- 4:07which is listed on our Live On website.
- 4:09You will use the pay-by-plate or metered parking.
- 4:13There may be a couple exceptions.
- 4:15There's some bigger groups moving in
- 4:16like Residential Business Community
- 4:18and McDonel Hall on Monday.
- 4:20You'll probably still see some unloading zones
- 4:22because you're a big group coming in.
- 4:24But other groups,
- 4:25because it'll be more of a trickle,
- 4:26you'll just use the pay-by-plate parking
- 4:28that is available to you.
- 4:30And then if you're wondering about other opportunities
- 4:33to move in a little earlier
- 4:35if you are not part of that early arrival,
- 4:36we have a great one.
- 4:37So if you wanna help support other students moving in,
- 4:41you can join the Welcome Team.
- 4:42We heavily promote this to our returning students,
- 4:45but our incoming students are able to help as well.
- 4:48And so in exchange for helping
- 4:50with 12 volunteer hours during move-in,
- 4:52you get to move in on either Sunday, August 23rd,
- 4:55or Monday, August 24th at no cost to you.
- 4:59You can sign up in your My Housing account
- 5:01that is available now.
- 5:03Another important step that everyone needs,
- 5:06and we really try to have as many people do this
- 5:08before they arrive to the halls,
- 5:10is to pick up your MSU ID.
- 5:11So if you are a local area student
- 5:15or you're able to visit campus
- 5:17before we get to move-in week,
- 5:18you are welcome to go right to the International Center
- 5:21and go through that ID process.
- 5:23If you are not able to do that,
- 5:25we would definitely heavily encourage you to go ahead
- 5:29and do the upload process that was in your MSU email.
- 5:33And so submit that photo, get that approved,
- 5:36and then you'll be able to pick up your ID.
- 5:38If you're arriving between the 24th and the 27th,
- 5:41you'll be able to visit the STEM building on campus
- 5:43and pick up your ID that goes really quick.
- 5:45Important, no matter which way you do ID pickup
- 5:49is that you do need to bring
- 5:50a physical form of identification
- 5:52to be able to pick up your MSU ID card.
- 5:55It cannot be a digital copy on your phone,
- 5:58and so if you aren't able to do an early pickup
- 6:01or you are not able to do the photo submission
- 6:04and go through the STEM building route,
- 6:06you will have to go to the ID office
- 6:07in the International Center,
- 6:09and our partners have just asked us to let everybody know
- 6:11that it does get a little slow on those days,
- 6:13it gets a little busy.
- 6:15So like I said, if you're able to do the early pickup
- 6:17or to do the online submission
- 6:21and then pick it up at STEM,
- 6:22those are the best, most efficient routes.
- 6:25Let's talk about move-in steps step by step.
- 6:28So first, you're coming to campus,
- 6:30we've asked you to just bring one vehicle,
- 6:33that really helps us get through the parking
- 6:36and the unloading zones quicker.
- 6:38You can only bring one vehicle into each unloading zone.
- 6:41So when you come in,
- 6:42you're gonna follow the instructions
- 6:44that we're gonna talk about in another slide
- 6:45that are available also in the MSU app and on our website,
- 6:49and we're gonna have a bunch of directional signs
- 6:51that are really gonna help you figure out
- 6:52where you need to go.
- 6:53Please note that because we have specific ways
- 6:56we have everybody come into campus
- 6:57to help with that traffic flow,
- 6:59this is gonna be different than what your GPS says.
- 7:02And we're also navigating around some construction
- 7:05that mostly will be resolved by the time we get to move-in,
- 7:07but there might be some things here and there.
- 7:09Once you get to that hall,
- 7:10you will be directed to your specific unloading zone space.
- 7:13We're gonna have a staff or volunteer member
- 7:15who's going to give you some additional instructions.
- 7:18And then you can see those detailed moving in pieces
- 7:21in that move-in parking webpage.
- 7:24As the driver is working through the unloading piece,
- 7:27we have our students go into their check-in location.
- 7:30Sometimes those are right at your residence hall,
- 7:33sometimes they are at a neighboring building.
- 7:35So we do have the list of those available now
- 7:37on the Live On website under Check-In Locations.
- 7:39When you're there,
- 7:40it's only the student that needs to go to the check-in,
- 7:43you will go and get your room keys,
- 7:44and you'll get your check-in materials,
- 7:46and you'll also get the move-in voucher,
- 7:48meal voucher that we'll talk about.
- 7:50And like I said, as the student is checking in,
- 7:52move-in helpers will be unloading vehicles.
- 7:55This is short-term, 10-15 minutes.
- 7:58Driver cannot leave the vehicle.
- 8:00I cannot stress this enough.
- 8:01The driver cannot leave the vehicle.
- 8:03Our unloading zones are often in areas
- 8:07that are typically short-term parking.
- 8:09They cannot be blocked.
- 8:11It is important for the safety
- 8:12and security of all of our students and guests
- 8:15that we are not blocking those.
- 8:16If firetrucks need to come in,
- 8:18if trash vehicles need to come in,
- 8:20we cannot have things slowing down.
- 8:22We have a very...
- 8:23Each neighborhood has a specific and efficient process
- 8:26that they use to get everyone unloaded.
- 8:28That could be having everyone
- 8:30go kind of down these parallel lines,
- 8:32and so that as soon as you're done unloading, you move on.
- 8:34They might have you back in on an angle
- 8:36to be able to fit as many vehicles in as possible.
- 8:39Each neighborhood has really worked hard
- 8:40to figure out how to do that best.
- 8:42But again, the driver cannot leave the vehicle.
- 8:45When we have issues like that
- 8:46and we have to work with our partners
- 8:47and police and public safety,
- 8:49it really slows things down
- 8:50and it can really kind of complicate
- 8:53the experience for everyone else.
- 8:55So once the driver moves things
- 8:57and you're in your room,
- 8:58that really is where you get to go at your own pace.
- 9:00We do not have a time that everyone has to leave campus.
- 9:03Each student and family and supporters
- 9:05can figure out how much time they want to spend together
- 9:08setting up that room.
- 9:10Part of the process also,
- 9:11you see our infamous green carts on the screen there.
- 9:14And so that is a helpful piece that we have
- 9:16for all of our families to use as they're unloading.
- 9:19You'll get those returned back to the areas
- 9:22that you check them out at,
- 9:24and then you're welcome to stay.
- 9:26Only one vehicle per student
- 9:27is allowed in those unloading zones, like we said.
- 9:29And trailers are a huge issue
- 9:33that we don't wanna see either
- 9:35because they don't fit well into those unloading zones.
- 9:37So if you come with a trailer
- 9:39and our team is trying to accommodate you,
- 9:41often they will tell you
- 9:42if you don't already go to the long-term parking,
- 9:44that they're gonna need you to go to a long-term parking lot
- 9:47to be able to unload that
- 9:48because there's not space for you in those unloading zones.
- 9:51So we've talked a lot about the traffic and parking.
- 9:53It is construction season here in Michigan.
- 9:56Our area is no different.
- 9:57We have a lot of orange cones up.
- 9:59The good news is we're seeing a lot of them
- 10:01start to move on,
- 10:03but there still is some available and around,
- 10:07so we do ask that everybody leaves time
- 10:09when they're thinking about it.
- 10:10Look at those traffic instructions
- 10:13that we have on our website and our app ahead of time.
- 10:16Look at the highways you're gonna be using
- 10:17and see if they have some ongoing construction projects.
- 10:20We're gonna keep this website up to date up
- 10:22until move-in with the latest information.
- 10:25But things we do know,
- 10:26we do have some rebuilding projects on US-127,
- 10:29which is north of campus
- 10:31on Grand River Avenue near campus,
- 10:34kind of near the Mason/Abbot, Snyder/Phillips area.
- 10:37We do have some work.
- 10:38We are seeing lanes open back up for that,
- 10:40so that's exciting.
- 10:41Saginaw Highway west of Lansing
- 10:43has some construction right now.
- 10:45I-96 west of Lansing does as well.
- 10:48And then current campus construction projects
- 10:50include Farm Lane, Wilson Road, and Red Cedar Road.
- 10:54Our partners and infrastructure planning and facilities
- 10:57do anticipate that all of those roads will be open
- 11:01no later than August 21st,
- 11:03but we do know that can change,
- 11:04so that's where with the texting and our website
- 11:07we'll keep y'all up to date if things have changed there.
- 11:10I mentioned the website a lot and what you can look for.
- 11:12We have spent time working on for each neighborhood
- 11:15instructions for how to come into campus,
- 11:17whether you're coming from south, north, east, or west.
- 11:20This is an example of if you're coming
- 11:21to south neighborhood, the instructions we have.
- 11:23We're having our partners in police and public safety
- 11:26double check these for this year
- 11:27to make sure all of these exits and roads that we shared
- 11:30are the ones we wanna use, but they should be.
- 11:33And then when you arrive to campus,
- 11:36you'll get a handout that includes this map.
- 11:37It will tell you how to come in
- 11:40and where your unloading zone is,
- 11:41where your check-in location is,
- 11:43and it also will share where your long-term parking lot is.
- 11:46So like I said, we've really gotten this down to a science.
- 11:48We know for south neighborhood Wonders Hall,
- 11:51you're using Lot 63 near the Breslin Center.
- 11:54If you're in Wilson and Holden Hall,
- 11:55you're going south of the railroad tracks to Lot 83.
- 11:58Our unloading zone volunteers
- 12:00will be helping guide you through these too,
- 12:02but we do hand out a map to everyone
- 12:04to make sure you have a good sense of where to go.
- 12:07We know it can feel a little overwhelming coming in
- 12:09and all these steps,
- 12:10and we really wanna give you a step-by-step process
- 12:12and help out.
- 12:13This is an overview of move-in parking on campus
- 12:16that was on the webpage we shared.
- 12:19You should be also getting our move-in guide
- 12:21that will come to your home mailboxes soon
- 12:23that will have this map.
- 12:25So like I said, this is an overview of all the parking lots
- 12:27that we use once people are done unloading.
- 12:30It also shows where ID pickup is,
- 12:32whether you're doing the expedited pickup
- 12:35or have to go to the ID office.
- 12:37And then I mentioned the MSU app,
- 12:39so you can download that by going to msu.app
- 12:42or find it in your App or Google Play Store
- 12:46that is available to you.
- 12:47The week of move-in, we will have the app go live
- 12:51with the latest move-in information.
- 12:53And then one more tool we're gonna test out this year,
- 12:55it is gonna be brand new to us so we'll see
- 12:58and we'll get some feedback on how helpful it is.
- 13:00We're working with police and public safety on a new website
- 13:03called Perimeter that they've used for other things.
- 13:06And so that's also gonna be another tool
- 13:08that people can use to look at maps for our neighborhoods,
- 13:11see where the latest construction is,
- 13:13see the latest unloading zones.
- 13:15And so we'll test that out
- 13:16and see if that's helpful for folks
- 13:18as we figure out the best way to get you that.
- 13:20But that, I believe, is my last slide for now
- 13:25as we talk about move-in details,
- 13:26and I'm gonna pass it back over to Amanda.
- 13:30- All right. Thank you so much, Bethany.
- 13:32I appreciate it.
- 13:34So just to kind of give folks a heads-up
- 13:36as we transition talking a little bit more
- 13:38about the rooms themselves.
- 13:40Bed adjustments is something that is very popular
- 13:43with our students trying to plan for coming to campus.
- 13:47Most rooms when moving in,
- 13:48students will have one bed that is lofted
- 13:51and one bed that is trundled.
- 13:53And so the residents themselves can decide
- 13:54if they wanna keep that configuration
- 13:56or if they would like to change it
- 13:58based off of their preferences
- 13:59and how they envision their room set up.
- 14:01If you wish to change either of those
- 14:04to two lofted options or two trundled options,
- 14:07students can fill out a maintenance request
- 14:09in their My Housing account,
- 14:11and we will start to make those changes in September.
- 14:14Now, for those of you that heard,
- 14:16I did not misspoke,
- 14:17those changes are actually gonna start in September,
- 14:20just so that way our facilities team have enough time
- 14:23to get into the spaces and get everybody moved in
- 14:26and then work on doing some of those changes.
- 14:28So My Housing account maintenance request,
- 14:30that is exactly where you're gonna wanna go to
- 14:32for those bed adjustments.
- 14:35So moving forward,
- 14:37as a reminder,
- 14:38all of our room types and bathroom previews
- 14:40can be found in our 360 Library Tours.
- 14:43We also have the general dimensions
- 14:45and layouts available on the specific hall pages
- 14:47to kind of age in picking the appropriate carpet
- 14:49or rug size.
- 14:51It's also an incredibly helpful tool
- 14:53if you happen to be in Target or Ikea or Costco
- 14:56and you fall in love with a shelving unit or something,
- 14:59pull up that 360 Tour
- 15:01and figure out exactly where you're gonna put it in the room
- 15:03before it goes in the cart
- 15:04because nobody wants to do a return on move-in day,
- 15:07especially around campus.
- 15:10Then looking at some other things,
- 15:12some things we suggest you plan on bringing with you
- 15:14or some things you might find yourself
- 15:16running to the store for during move-in
- 15:18are listed on the screen.
- 15:20Please note, specifications for refrigerators
- 15:22are 5 cubic feet or less,
- 15:24and microwaves are 750 watts or less.
- 15:27It's also incredibly important
- 15:29that you connect with your roommate or roommates
- 15:31prior to packing so you aren't trying to find a space
- 15:34for three futons in one room.
- 15:37I don't think it can be done,
- 15:38but I also don't wanna be proved wrong,
- 15:40so please coordinate who's bringing what.
- 15:43It's also completely acceptable
- 15:44and we're highly supportive of you moving in
- 15:47and then purchasing items
- 15:48or getting items shipped or delivered
- 15:51as you find that you need them,
- 15:52so that way you kind of grow into the space
- 15:54as opposed to having to figure out
- 15:56how to Tetris right from the beginning.
- 16:01Then we have here are items that are included in the room.
- 16:04And if you're looking at those 360 Tours,
- 16:07any of the wooden furniture that's seen in there
- 16:09is included in the rooms.
- 16:10All of our desks come with chairs
- 16:13and our mattresses are extra long twins,
- 16:15which is an important distinction
- 16:17if you want to avoid being eaten
- 16:18by your fitted sheet on the first night.
- 16:21This furniture is also expected to stay in the room all year
- 16:24as we do not have storage space available,
- 16:26so please plan on using the furniture that's in the space
- 16:29and keeping it in there.
- 16:30I'll talk a little bit more about checking items out
- 16:33from the Service Center shortly,
- 16:34but I do like to share a fun pro tip.
- 16:37Our mattresses on campus are actually double-sided,
- 16:39meaning one side is soft and the other side is firm.
- 16:43If you're having difficulty getting comfortable
- 16:45after those first couple of nights,
- 16:46try flipping your mattress
- 16:48before investing in a mattress pad
- 16:50because it can make a world of difference
- 16:51and you find you might not even need one.
- 16:56And then while there are a lot of items
- 16:58we encourage you to bring,
- 16:59there's also a decent list of items
- 17:01that we suggest that you leave at home.
- 17:03Important items of note here,
- 17:05all student spaces have Wi-Fi
- 17:07so do not bring a personal wireless router.
- 17:10Additionally, any small appliances
- 17:12that have an open heating element
- 17:13like wax melters or hot plates
- 17:15as well as Insta Pots or air fryers,
- 17:17they are not allowed in student rooms.
- 17:22For a more in-depth list of what is and is not allowed
- 17:25as well as general guidelines,
- 17:27housing rules and regulations for on-campus spaces,
- 17:30look to the On-Campus Housing Handbook.
- 17:32It's found at the liveon.msu.edu website under Documents,
- 17:36and it has a very comprehensive table of contents.
- 17:39So it's important to read it,
- 17:41or at the very least skim through
- 17:43as there are tons of notes
- 17:45applicable to the student experience.
- 17:46And residents, you are held to the terms and conditions
- 17:49that are listed in there,
- 17:50so it's probably a good idea
- 17:51to take a look at it before you move in.
- 17:54Now, talking a little bit about what's in the neighborhoods,
- 17:57we'll start with Service Centers here.
- 17:59So every neighborhood has some combination
- 18:02of Service Centers and Package Centers.
- 18:04These are gonna be a great resource for students
- 18:06who have temporarily misplaced something
- 18:08and may need to borrow a loaner key or a loaner ID
- 18:11or students that need to borrow things
- 18:13like brooms and vacuums for cleaning their spaces
- 18:15if they didn't wanna pack their own.
- 18:18Now, I mentioned packages and mail.
- 18:21Students actually receive their mail and packages
- 18:23in these locations more often than not.
- 18:26And on our next slide here,
- 18:27you can kind of see how that's gonna work.
- 18:29It's important to note
- 18:30that on order to maintain the chain of custody,
- 18:33we actually log packages received from major mail entities
- 18:36and then email the resident
- 18:38when the packages are ready to be picked up.
- 18:41This is incredibly helpful
- 18:42in helping us track where the packages are.
- 18:44It means we don't have delivery personnels
- 18:46on our residential wings,
- 18:47and you're hopefully not going to get a picture from Amazon
- 18:51saying your package was delivered in a bush
- 18:53somewhere on campus.
- 18:54I mean, we are a national arboretum,
- 18:55and that sounds like a terrible game of hide and seek.
- 18:57And so by logging mail and packages at the Service Centers,
- 19:00this is actually a great way
- 19:02that we can kind of control that process
- 19:03and make sure that the package is getting to the resident.
- 19:07We do begin accepting packages to the Service Centers
- 19:09two weeks before classes start.
- 19:11You can see on the slide there
- 19:12that we start accepting packages as of August 10th.
- 19:17So that's important to note.
- 19:18It's a good way to have some things waiting for you
- 19:20when you move in.
- 19:21We do ask for a bit of patience
- 19:23in processing items during move-in.
- 19:25As you can imagine, 17,000 students moving in at once
- 19:28means a lot of mail and packages.
- 19:30If there are any items
- 19:31that could be considered supremely timely in nature,
- 19:34such as important documents or prescriptions,
- 19:37residents are suggested to make use of the Amazon Locker
- 19:39that is closest to them.
- 19:41And there's one in just about every neighborhood,
- 19:43and those are good options
- 19:44to kind of keep in mind as well.
- 19:47When looking at sending items to campus,
- 19:50this is actually the format we use
- 19:52to ensure that items are received in the correct location.
- 19:55When listing the hall name,
- 19:56it is helpful to share if it's north or south
- 19:59or east or west
- 20:00to speed up processing,
- 20:01that helps in addition to the address.
- 20:03And then if you need help looking up your specific address,
- 20:06check out the mailing addresses information on our website,
- 20:10and you can kind of see what that looks like there.
- 20:13So talking about what else is in the rooms,
- 20:15I mentioned earlier,
- 20:16all the rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi
- 20:19as well as cable and ethernet.
- 20:20Xfinity is our on-campus provider,
- 20:22and all devices are gonna need to be registered with MSU
- 20:26in order to use the Wi-Fi.
- 20:28Registering your devices
- 20:29is a step you can take when you get to campus.
- 20:31This fall, it's super easy.
- 20:32It takes less than five minutes
- 20:34and you'll just have to enter in a description for things.
- 20:37If you find that you do have any questions
- 20:39or difficulties with that,
- 20:40please reference the Welcome Guide
- 20:42that you're gonna receive in your room when you check in,
- 20:44or you can go to the tech website
- 20:46and see frequently asked questions or sources for more help.
- 20:52So when checking out your neighborhood
- 20:54or exploring your building,
- 20:56whether in person when you get here in the fall
- 20:57or online until you move in,
- 21:00make sure to be on the lookout
- 21:01for a lot of these community spaces.
- 21:03While more common in suite style buildings,
- 21:05bike rooms are available
- 21:07as well as outdoor storage options all over campus.
- 21:10Shared kitchen spaces, lounges and private rooms
- 21:13are also available within the neighborhoods,
- 21:15many of which can be booked in advance.
- 21:17You'll wanna check in with your Service Center
- 21:19or read the signage available
- 21:21to see if the space can be reserved or how it's accessed.
- 21:23And that's really helpful
- 21:24if you're looking to practice an instrument
- 21:26or have reflection or do private study
- 21:28because those spaces exist right outside your room
- 21:30and it's helpful to know how to gain access to them.
- 21:35An exciting update that we do have
- 21:37is we are rolling out upgrades to our laundry system.
- 21:40The new Speed Queen laundry app
- 21:43is gonna help residents monitor machine availability
- 21:45as well as cycle timing.
- 21:47While laundry is free,
- 21:48students are gonna need to provide their own detergent.
- 21:51Our machines can use liquid, pods or sheets,
- 21:53and we highly recommend
- 21:54following the machine instructions carefully.
- 21:56Take a second and read the chart
- 21:58or look at the pictures at least.
- 22:01Taking special caution not to overload the machines
- 22:03or use too high of a temperature setting.
- 22:06It's much easier to run a dryer cycle twice
- 22:09than it is to replace damaged items,
- 22:11so please pay attention to the care tags
- 22:13that are sewn inside of your items
- 22:15as well as the settings on the machine
- 22:17when you go to use them,
- 22:18and that should definitely help.
- 22:22Other things that are free in the neighborhoods,
- 22:25neighborhood spaces will have cardio fitness centers
- 22:27in all of them which is free to use for students.
- 22:31We'll also have larger facilities available
- 22:33to accommodate team sports
- 22:34and with a lot more intensive equipment,
- 22:36and that can be found
- 22:37at any of our student
- 22:38Recreational Sports and Fitness Centers.
- 22:40That also includes access
- 22:42to our brand new Student Rec and Wellness Center
- 22:44that's located near the Breslin Center.
- 22:46If you haven't seen pictures of that yet,
- 22:48get excited, it's gorgeous inside.
- 22:50And they have really cool things
- 22:52available to you as a resident
- 22:53like a rock climbing wall or hammocking spaces indoors.
- 22:56A lot of really neat options
- 22:58to be able to be utilized there,
- 22:59again, as part of your tuition at MSU.
- 23:03So we are gonna transition
- 23:05to talk about one of my favorite subjects on campus
- 23:08is dining.
- 23:09We are gonna talk about our exceptional on-campus dining.
- 23:12We're thrilled to welcome you.
- 23:14Campus plans are gonna start on Tuesday, August 25th,
- 23:17and we're very excited to have
- 23:19all of those dining halls back open with us.
- 23:22So when moving in,
- 23:23it's important to note that all students
- 23:25are gonna receive a move-in helpers pass.
- 23:27There's a picture of it on the screen here,
- 23:29and it's gonna be good for the student moving in
- 23:31as well as up to two helpers.
- 23:34Now, these passes are redeemable only at specific locations,
- 23:37so please read your pass details to determine your options.
- 23:40And then know that menu options for all the locations
- 23:44are gonna be available online
- 23:45so you can kind of see what to expect
- 23:47and where you can look to get them hours,
- 23:50things, all of that kind of stuff.
- 23:51So definitely come in and check it out.
- 23:53I know I had to do some convincing
- 23:54with my parents when we were moving in
- 23:57and I was like, "Trust me, it's good.
- 23:59You gotta come check it out."
- 24:00So it's definitely kind of neat
- 24:01if you haven't had the opportunity to do so yet.
- 24:05So as a reminder,
- 24:06all on-campus students have a meal plan.
- 24:09And with the exception of Spartan Cash and guest passes,
- 24:12all meal plans are the same.
- 24:14They are all unlimited with access to the same venues,
- 24:17in the same dining halls,
- 24:18at the same times, with the same foods.
- 24:20They all have the same amount of combos
- 24:22and truly have no differences
- 24:24other than Spartan Cash and guest passes.
- 24:27Now, the majority of students living on campus
- 24:29have the silver plan,
- 24:30but there should be no FOMO
- 24:31in regards to what the other plans offer.
- 24:34You can add Spartan Cash
- 24:36independent of the meal plan at any point in time.
- 24:38And if your plan doesn't have guest passes
- 24:41or you have guest passes and you run out,
- 24:43guests can always pay at the door to eat.
- 24:46So it's important, we are a cashless facility,
- 24:48but you won't be turned away
- 24:49because you don't have a guest pass.
- 24:51If you have further questions about your dining plans
- 24:54or are interested in changing them,
- 24:55definitely check out the Eat at State website
- 24:57and look for kind of navigation on what to expect
- 25:00and how to go about that process.
- 25:03Now, I mentioned Spartan Cash is one of the main differences
- 25:05between the dining plans,
- 25:06and Spartan Cash can be added to the meal plan.
- 25:10It can be added to your ID card at any point in time.
- 25:14As you can see on the next slide,
- 25:15it basically turns your student ID
- 25:17into a declining balance account
- 25:18or a gift card with your picture on it.
- 25:21From textbooks to Spartan gear,
- 25:23study sessions, snacks, to takeout,
- 25:25Spartan Cash is used at a ton
- 25:26of both on and off-campus locations.
- 25:29And additionally, it rolls over from year to year,
- 25:31so it doesn't expire.
- 25:32You also get a 15% discount
- 25:34at several of the noted culinary locations on campus,
- 25:37which is kind of helpful if you're stocking up.
- 25:40I was an out-of-state student,
- 25:42and I share that for the majority of my life,
- 25:45my grandmother put a very crisp $5 bill
- 25:48into a Snoopy-themed birthday card and would mail it to me.
- 25:51I would get the card,
- 25:52I would open it up and be excited,
- 25:54and then we would spend three hours on the phone
- 25:55talking about my new gift
- 25:58and how things are going,
- 25:59and I absolutely adored it.
- 26:00Now, I was a little more tight on time
- 26:03when it came to college
- 26:04and so I actually taught her about Spartan Cash,
- 26:06and she would actually call the Spartan Cash office,
- 26:09talk to them for like two and a half hours.
- 26:11And then by the time she got to me,
- 26:13I had $5 in my Spartan Cash account,
- 26:15and she only had like a half hour of conversation left
- 26:17in her at that point,
- 26:18and that was really much more economical
- 26:20for our relationship at the time.
- 26:21But it was also a nice way
- 26:23to acknowledge birthdays or special events,
- 26:24things like that, without having to send cash in the mail
- 26:27and also to make sure that your student ID
- 26:30has funds on it whenever you may need them.
- 26:32So it's definitely kind of a neat idea to have,
- 26:34and again, it doesn't expire.
- 26:37Speaking about that student ID
- 26:39when it comes to Spartan Cash
- 26:40or dining on campus,
- 26:41your MSU ID is the key.
- 26:44It's important that you never share your ID
- 26:46with friends or guests.
- 26:48Again, your picture is gonna be on it
- 26:49so you are the only one who can use it,
- 26:51but this is gonna be what you use to scan in and get a meal,
- 26:55whether it's Grab & Go or Combo-X-Change.
- 26:58If you happen to misplace your ID,
- 27:00make sure it's reported in a timely manner
- 27:02so that way they can be frozen
- 27:03or reissued depending upon the situation.
- 27:06So keep it secure and keep us notified of its status.
- 27:10So talking about what you can use that ID for,
- 27:13we have plenty of options available on campus,
- 27:16so many options.
- 27:18We have our traditional all-you-care-to-eat spaces
- 27:21that are a bit more sit down.
- 27:22We have our in a hurry Grab & Go locations,
- 27:25which include our mobile ordering options,
- 27:27as well as the ever popular Combo-X-Change.
- 27:30All of our menus are available online
- 27:32with allergens and hours posted,
- 27:34and students are recommended to pick up a Pocket Guide
- 27:37for those first few weeks on campus
- 27:40to understand what's available.
- 27:42For help navigating the Mobile Ordering Hub on Grubhub,
- 27:45you're gonna wanna check out the Eat at State website,
- 27:47and it'll walk you through the steps
- 27:48of setting up your account
- 27:49and show you kind of all the customizable options
- 27:53that are gonna be available for your meal too,
- 27:55so that's really helpful.
- 27:58And as I mentioned,
- 27:59the ever popular Combo-X-Change
- 28:01gives students like if your student's anything like me,
- 28:03you wake up at 7:55 for an 8:00 am class
- 28:06and still think there's time for breakfast.
- 28:08The Combo-X-Change plan
- 28:10virtually offers limitless flexible options for you.
- 28:15Accepted at all the locations on the screen,
- 28:17so you'll notice all of our culinary locations on there,
- 28:20students can use their meal plan
- 28:21to get 12 Combo-X-Changes a week.
- 28:23Each one consisting of a drink,
- 28:25an entree and a side to make a complete meal.
- 28:28All combo items are very clearly labeled
- 28:30and staff are happy to help students navigate
- 28:33which options are available for each.
- 28:35Combos are accepted at all of our culinary retail locations
- 28:37as well as our on-campus restaurant partners.
- 28:40So those of you with eagle eyes
- 28:42who have read through the location list,
- 28:44this also means that if you have a Starbucks habit,
- 28:46congratulations, you can get Starbucks 12 times a week
- 28:49as part of your meal plan for free.
- 28:51It also means you can get Panda Express 12 times a week,
- 28:54but that is way too much sodium for one person,
- 28:56so please be responsible with your choices and flexibility.
- 29:03Now, talking a little bit about dietary considerations
- 29:06and allergen awareness,
- 29:07our dining options provide a wide variety of options
- 29:11with transparency in mind.
- 29:12The majority of our meals are made from scratch in-house
- 29:15with a team of executive chefs and favorite Spartan recipes.
- 29:18And in addition to all of our digital
- 29:20and physical menus being labeled with major allergens
- 29:22and searchable ingredients,
- 29:23our staff is really trained to assist
- 29:25with specific needs with care.
- 29:27There are allergen-friendly
- 29:29kind of allergen restricted options available
- 29:31in every dining hall and market,
- 29:33as well as Thrive,
- 29:34our all-you-care-to-eat facility.
- 29:35Thrive is free of the top nine major allergens plus gluten.
- 29:39And it is incredible,
- 29:41they've been voted best chicken tenders on campus
- 29:43for the last six years in a row by the students,
- 29:45and it truly is.
- 29:46They use some combination of panko breading and witchcraft
- 29:49to make these amazing nuggets
- 29:51that like I go to line up for.
- 29:53They also have two flavors of Dole Whip
- 29:55on rotation every day,
- 29:56so that's really nice with that unlimited meal plan.
- 29:59You can pop in for a full meal
- 30:00or just a cone of Dole Whip,
- 30:02whatever your choosing is.
- 30:04Students that are looking to report an allergy
- 30:06or a dietary restriction are encouraged to connect
- 30:08with our team of registered dieticians
- 30:10to navigate options with awareness and confidence.
- 30:13There is a link on the screen here
- 30:15that you can use to do that
- 30:16as well as contacting the Eat at State Office
- 30:19or Eat at State email,
- 30:20and they'll go ahead and put you in contact
- 30:21with either of them.
- 30:25So if any of that sounds exciting to you,
- 30:27our Culinary Services team is always hiring.
- 30:30It takes over 5,000 student positions
- 30:33to keep our housing and dining running smoothly,
- 30:35and those jobs are gonna be posted
- 30:37at the jobs.rhs.msu website year round.
- 30:40Students who are looking to work in the residence halls
- 30:43at a Service Center
- 30:44or facilities teams in the neighborhoods
- 30:46or culinary and retail teams
- 30:48are encouraged to check out postings regularly.
- 30:50There are also unique positions available
- 30:52within Campus Crew, MSU tour operations, tech, and more.
- 30:57Pay is competitive
- 30:58and our team is well aware the word student comes first
- 31:00in the title of student employee.
- 31:03By honoring class times and exam schedules,
- 31:05studying windows and campus commitments,
- 31:07we have flexible scheduling options,
- 31:09and getting a part-time position on campus
- 31:11tends to help students
- 31:12structure their time more intentionally,
- 31:14builds community with others
- 31:15and earn some money at the same time.
- 31:19So now I am going to talk more about our in-hall teams
- 31:22by transitioning to our good friend Bethany,
- 31:24and I will join you again back at the end of the slideshow.
- 31:29Bethany.
- 31:33- All right, so a couple more things
- 31:35related to on-campus living.
- 31:37So we have an amazing team
- 31:39in Residence Education Housing Services
- 31:41along with our colleagues in Culinary Services.
- 31:44So students typically mostly interact
- 31:47with our Residence Education team,
- 31:49and so we have undergraduate students that are on our team,
- 31:52we have graduate students and full-time staff.
- 31:54So this chart kind of goes over some of those folks.
- 31:57We have resident assistants serving every floor.
- 32:00We have intercultural aides that work in each neighborhood
- 32:04and provide additional help and support.
- 32:07And then this is kind of the escalation plan for issues
- 32:11and things that students need,
- 32:12but our staff are always happy to answer questions.
- 32:15So you'll see community directors
- 32:16listed on our residence hall webpages.
- 32:19The other staff will not have their contact information
- 32:21on our website,
- 32:22but you will receive that as you move in.
- 32:25And next we're gonna talk about,
- 32:26I believe, the community and floor meetings
- 32:28that you wanna make sure to attend.
- 32:30So yes, we have both community meetings and floor meetings.
- 32:33We wanna make sure that every residential student
- 32:35participates in one of each of these.
- 32:38We go over important information.
- 32:39You get to meet the points of contact
- 32:41that you'll want to get to know when you have a question
- 32:43or have a concern throughout your time living on campus,
- 32:46and it's also a great way to meet your floor mates.
- 32:49So community meetings,
- 32:50students either attend August 24th, 26th or 28th.
- 32:54We ask that you attend the one
- 32:55closest to on or after your arrival date.
- 32:58If something comes up
- 32:59and you're not able to attend that first one,
- 33:00please do make sure to make it to another one.
- 33:02Your community director or residence director
- 33:04will share that information
- 33:05on the time and location for those.
- 33:08And then floor meetings are another required event.
- 33:11We make sure to work these
- 33:13around other university events happening.
- 33:15So students will either attend August 29th or 30th,
- 33:18and you'll get that information typically from your RA,
- 33:21so make sure to watch your email
- 33:23and look for those timing and location details.
- 33:28New student orientation.
- 33:30So for our incoming students,
- 33:31hopefully you've been interacting
- 33:33a lot with our New Student Orientation Office
- 33:35and you're looking forward to the in-person portion of NSO.
- 33:39So that kicks off on Wednesday, August 26th in the evening,
- 33:43so you should be getting lots of information
- 33:45from those folks.
- 33:46We do try to make sure that every incoming student
- 33:48gets to have a move-in time ahead of that
- 33:50so you can go to that event at Breslin.
- 33:52It's a great way to kick off the season.
- 33:54And then there's a bunch more events
- 33:55and programs available to you through NSO.
- 33:59Their website has the latest information.
- 34:01Parents and supporters and family members,
- 34:03hopefully you've seen that they have some events for you
- 34:05during move-in as well.
- 34:07And then you may have got an invitation for their webinar
- 34:11to go over new student orientation
- 34:13and the Welcome to State events on August 10th.
- 34:16If you did not get that, reach out to the NSO Office
- 34:18or, (sneezes) excuse me,
- 34:20follow them on social media.
- 34:22I've seen them promote this webinar
- 34:23a couple times on their Facebook page.
- 34:28And then Welcome to State.
- 34:30This is a little rebranded name
- 34:31from previous names like Welcome Week or Fall Welcome,
- 34:34but this is to be more encompassing,
- 34:36and we really want to make sure that students
- 34:37have a robust welcome experience
- 34:40which really goes beyond just move-in week.
- 34:42So we have events that run as early as August 1st.
- 34:45Some of that's more virtual events.
- 34:47And then we keep this going now
- 34:48through Homecoming on October 11th.
- 34:51So this is designed to help you transition or re-acclimate.
- 34:54It's both for our incoming and our returning students.
- 34:57We want all students to participate in different events.
- 35:00And the team is very busy putting together
- 35:02all of the resources and event schedules
- 35:05to support students arriving to campus
- 35:08or returning back to campus.
- 35:09So you can see we have this go.msu.edu/welcome page
- 35:14you can go to.
- 35:14Do note that the events are still being added,
- 35:17so students will start receiving communications
- 35:20when we're ready to have everyone
- 35:21look at the schedule in full.
- 35:23But you can see a lot of those events are being added,
- 35:25particularly the highlighted events.
- 35:27We have some signature events such as UFest, Participation,
- 35:32we've got some fun names for those.
- 35:33There's a lot of resource fairs available to students,
- 35:36and then there's like affinity events
- 35:38for different communities.
- 35:39So we're very excited to get that going with everyone
- 35:42and have everyone get to know MSU and the community better.
- 35:49All right, always important to talk about on-campus safety.
- 35:52We have many ways we do support our students' physical
- 35:56and mental health safety and well-being.
- 35:58We wanna make sure people have a safe
- 35:59and secure living environment for all of our residents.
- 36:03So a couple notes on this slide.
- 36:05If you have not downloaded the SAFEMSU app,
- 36:09please go ahead and do that.
- 36:10You can find information on our police website about that,
- 36:14or you can search SafeMSU on App Store or in Google Play.
- 36:18It's got some really great resources.
- 36:21It has a cool friend walk feature
- 36:23where you can share your location with someone
- 36:25if you do need to travel alone
- 36:27when you're not able to travel in groups.
- 36:29It has information on ASMSU Safe Ride program.
- 36:32It's got some of the helpful CATA links.
- 36:35It also will have push notifications when DPPS
- 36:38needs to reach you for some pertinent information.
- 36:42And then the other graphic we have here
- 36:44shows one of our ID scanners.
- 36:46And so it's really important to note
- 36:47that our living wings on elevators
- 36:49are locked 24/7 for those living wings,
- 36:52for those residential wings.
- 36:54So we want students to always feel secure.
- 36:57We do a big campaign that students will get to know.
- 36:59We talk about Live On, Live Safe.
- 37:02So while we have the tools
- 37:03to have where people cannot get into the living wings
- 37:06without an ID,
- 37:07it's also important
- 37:09that we're all being good partners together
- 37:11and not letting others into your living wing
- 37:14if you do not know them.
- 37:15You do not have to be Midwest nice as we call it.
- 37:17You do not have to let someone join you
- 37:20if you do not know them.
- 37:21Everybody should be using their ID to get into space.
- 37:24And so in addition to our living wings being locked 24/7,
- 37:26a lot of our buildings
- 37:27or pretty much all of our buildings
- 37:29will lock in the evenings,
- 37:31typically around 6:00 pm,
- 37:32so that you have to have a current active MSU ID
- 37:36to be able to get into those.
- 37:37Our buildings do often host different spaces.
- 37:40So we have dining halls in a lot of our residence halls,
- 37:43we have classrooms in a lot of our residence halls,
- 37:45so students will find in the more common public areas
- 37:48that there is some foot traffic in a lot of those buildings.
- 37:52But again, we do lock those down
- 37:53to be only the MSU community after certain hours.
- 37:58Other important items to note,
- 38:00so in addition to those access readers on every living wing,
- 38:03we do have green emergency phones.
- 38:05They are bright green and they have a button on them,
- 38:08and when they're pushed,
- 38:09it connects directly to 911.
- 38:12So those are available.
- 38:13You'll also see those across campus outdoors.
- 38:16There is an emergency notification system,
- 38:18so students are automatically subscribed
- 38:20to certain things through that alert system.
- 38:23You can add additional contact information
- 38:26if you go to alert.msu.edu.
- 38:28And parents and supporters,
- 38:29you're welcome to go to that webpage as well,
- 38:31and you're able to get added
- 38:33to some emergency notifications.
- 38:35As far as mental health,
- 38:36our Counseling & Psychiatric Services Office
- 38:39is available for confidential same-day help
- 38:41and many digital resources.
- 38:43They do have 24/7 crisis counseling,
- 38:45so that information will be shared early and often.
- 38:49And then we already talked about some of the building pieces
- 38:51that a lot of them are under restricted hours,
- 38:54ID access only.
- 38:55It's really important you keep that ID
- 38:57with you at all times.
- 38:58If something happens to your MSU ID,
- 39:01first to get support,
- 39:03the student will contact the RA on duty
- 39:06if it's evening hours
- 39:07or the Service Center if it's during daytime hours.
- 39:10And then we ask that you get to the ID office
- 39:12to get an updated MSU ID as soon as possible.
- 39:15There also are security cameras placed around campus
- 39:18and those are run
- 39:19by our Department of Police and Public Safety.
- 39:24On-campus water, we do get some questions about this.
- 39:27We do operate our own water system on campus,
- 39:30and this goes from our agricultural district and wells.
- 39:34So students will find that the water
- 39:35can be a little different than what they experience at home.
- 39:38It does get regularly tested
- 39:40and it does meet all regulatory requirements.
- 39:43We do have a water quality report that is shared each year.
- 39:46IPF just shared that for this year,
- 39:48so you can go to their website and check that out.
- 39:52One thing students may notice
- 39:53is if there is construction work happening near a building
- 39:58or the team needs to do some flushing
- 40:00or we've had kind of downtime,
- 40:02we really do try to run water constantly through the summer,
- 40:05and particularly as we get to move in,
- 40:07but students may notice what we call red water,
- 40:09so it's a little discolored.
- 40:10It's still safe,
- 40:11it just can look a little different.
- 40:13And we ask that students go ahead
- 40:15and run that until they see it go to clear.
- 40:19And if they do not see it go to clear,
- 40:21they can complete one of our online maintenance requests
- 40:23and let us know.
- 40:24We're always happy to help.
- 40:29All right, I have some final kind of recap reminders
- 40:32before we move into answering a few questions.
- 40:35So as I said,
- 40:36we need to arrive to our halls
- 40:38within that 30-minute arrival window.
- 40:41The unloading and parking instructions
- 40:43are available on our website,
- 40:44and then they will be shared with you
- 40:46throughout the process.
- 40:47So don't worry if you don't remember everything,
- 40:49we have team members there
- 40:50that are going to give you those instructions,
- 40:52but they do need to be followed.
- 40:53Vehicles cannot be left unattended
- 40:56in front of any of our residence halls.
- 40:58They do need to be moved
- 40:59because those are active unloading zones.
- 41:02Every year the weather's a little different,
- 41:04but more often than not,
- 41:05we do find that it's pretty warm during move-in,
- 41:08so we expect that, we plan for it,
- 41:10and we you'll see us say a whole bunch
- 41:13to unpack your fans first in the halls.
- 41:16The rooms do not have air conditioning
- 41:18unless students are approved
- 41:19for a medically necessary AC unit.
- 41:22We do find in Michigan
- 41:24that very often the weather changes pretty quick,
- 41:27especially the evening weather,
- 41:28and it gets pretty easy to get those rooms
- 41:31kind of regulated where you want.
- 41:33But during move-in hours, it's gonna be a little warm.
- 41:35And then our team works really hard all summer
- 41:37to make sure those rooms are ready.
- 41:39We do have 17,000 people living with us on campus,
- 41:43so we may have missed something.
- 41:44We really tried to check and recheck,
- 41:46but we may have.
- 41:47If you have issues with your room,
- 41:50please go to where you checked in to let us know.
- 41:52Go to one of the Service Centers,
- 41:54go complete a maintenance request.
- 41:55We will have additional staffing available in the buildings
- 42:00all throughout move-in
- 42:01in addition to our volunteers helping out,
- 42:03so we wanna help resolve those issues as quick as we can.
- 42:10And then we talked about water being safe.
- 42:12It could be discolored
- 42:14but run it for a few minutes till it's clear.
- 42:15And if truly after a few minutes it's not getting clear,
- 42:17then let us know and we're happy to help with that.
- 42:20Furniture that comes in the room must stay in the room.
- 42:22I think Amanda covered that already,
- 42:24so there's furniture that comes.
- 42:25You may wanna be adding or changing some things,
- 42:28but it cannot be stored at home or elsewhere,
- 42:30it needs to stay with the room.
- 42:32And then overall, we know move-in can be exciting.
- 42:36It can be kind of all kinds of emotional.
- 42:37So it can be exciting,
- 42:39it can be a little scary,
- 42:40it can be a little stressful.
- 42:42That's okay, it's very normal.
- 42:44Our team has a lot of experience with move-in.
- 42:47It's one of the things that we get most excited about.
- 42:49We're so genuinely happy to have you here.
- 42:52But we do know patience and grace are really important.
- 42:55If you do need to talk to any of our team about something,
- 42:58we are there for that.
- 42:59And we just ask that we all work together
- 43:02to ensure that every student has a great arrival experience.
- 43:09And now, we're onto questions and answers.
- 43:12- All right. Thank you so much, Bethany.
- 43:14So our team has been hard at work in the Q&A
- 43:17answering as many questions as they possibly can.
- 43:20Bethany and I are gonna go through and answer
- 43:22some of the more popular ones live here to get started.
- 43:27So the first one is a question
- 43:30that is a bit of a favorite of mine,
- 43:32"Can you use a U-Haul or cargo van to unload?"
- 43:38And the answer is not as popular as you might think.
- 43:41Unfortunately, no.
- 43:43We do not allow U-Hauls.
- 43:44We do not allow trailers.
- 43:46We find that they struggle
- 43:47to get into the loading and unloading zones.
- 43:49And as mentioned in the slides earlier with Bethany,
- 43:52those vehicles will most likely be moved
- 43:55to the long-term parking
- 43:56and then be told to load and unload their items from there
- 43:59simply because we don't have space for them
- 44:01in our loading and unloading zones.
- 44:04Bethany, do you have anything to add to that?
- 44:07- Yeah, I think we get a lot of very detailed question
- 44:10or versions of this question,
- 44:12so one thing we do sometimes get asked,
- 44:14"Okay, what about more of the van
- 44:16that has the U-Haul brand on those?"
- 44:18Typically, those are okay.
- 44:19They will fit.
- 44:20We do get that that comes in.
- 44:21Or somebody asks, "I have a small vehicle
- 44:24and I just have a little baby trailer that will go."
- 44:27If it's about the size of a pickup truck,
- 44:29it's gonna fit in there.
- 44:30Anything beyond that is going to become a problem.
- 44:32So if that's a helpful visual for you,
- 44:35you know, large pickup truck is about the biggest
- 44:38that we can fit into the unloading zones.
- 44:40- Yes, and you do not want to try and test that rule.
- 44:44I can tell you right now,
- 44:45the space is just not there.
- 44:48Speaking of, "Can you review the parking
- 44:51and unloading rules?"
- 44:53We have a bunch of questions about unloading
- 44:55more than one car and how that timing would work.
- 44:59For example, if we need two cars for move-in,
- 45:02can we unload one car first,
- 45:03park it in long-term,
- 45:05and then bring the second car in?
- 45:08- Yeah, so with the trying to get everyone in,
- 45:11particularly getting all of our incoming students in
- 45:13by Wednesday morning,
- 45:15we really need it to be one vehicle
- 45:17that goes to the unloading zone.
- 45:18Our halls,
- 45:19unfortunately the areas in front of the halls aren't huge,
- 45:22so we have to work with that.
- 45:23So really, we do mean that it's one,
- 45:25it's one vehicle in your unloading time
- 45:27that goes and gets unloaded.
- 45:28If you have additional vehicles
- 45:31that have some supplies in them,
- 45:32if you're not able to do a little Tetris when you come in,
- 45:35you're always welcome to go to that long-term parking
- 45:37and do a little Tetris
- 45:38before you come to the unloading area,
- 45:40if that works.
- 45:41But otherwise, plan to unload
- 45:42additional belongings from there.
- 45:44Or we do have times,
- 45:46unloading times or move-in times
- 45:48really are done at 7:00 pm
- 45:50if it works to kind of swing through.
- 45:51Or really after Thursday, the 27th,
- 45:54things become a little more normal,
- 45:56people can do some drop-offs then,
- 45:58so that is the way we do that.
- 46:01- Awesome. Thank you for that.
- 46:03So transitioning to another little topic here,
- 46:06reviewing information about MSU student IDs
- 46:10not being able to get IDs ahead of move-in and what happens.
- 46:13And I can start with this one.
- 46:14I'm gonna put some information in the chat
- 46:15that was on the slides
- 46:17so that folks can review where the ID office is
- 46:21and what time they can get their IDs at.
- 46:24The schedule starting August 24th is posted there.
- 46:27If students need to get,
- 46:29if they're able to get their IDs beforehand,
- 46:31they have available options posted on the website
- 46:34as to what that looks like.
- 46:35If the student can't get their ID ahead of move-in,
- 46:38that's okay.
- 46:40What we ask you to do
- 46:41is go to the STEM building in the middle of campus.
- 46:44It's on all the move-in maps.
- 46:45You wanna go to the STEM building
- 46:46and pick your ID up there
- 46:48to help make that move-in process that much easier.
- 46:50Again, as Bethany mentioned,
- 46:52you will need a photo ID in order to pick up your ID,
- 46:56which is great because they're gonna match
- 46:57the photos to each other,
- 46:59but they are gonna be available there.
- 47:00If you have any unique cases about different times
- 47:03or what that looks like,
- 47:04go ahead and get in contact with the ID office.
- 47:07And then outside of that,
- 47:09if you need to get in touch with our staff
- 47:11in regards to access and things like that,
- 47:12we do have Service Centers available in the halls
- 47:15to be able to kind of navigate any of those issues.
- 47:18Bethany, did you have anything you'd like to add to that?
- 47:21- I think a common question I'm seeing
- 47:24for the folks that are coming on August 22nd and 23rd
- 47:27on the weekend.
- 47:28So the ID office will not be open at that time,
- 47:30so we plan for that,
- 47:32so we do know that.
- 47:33So our team that are doing check-ins
- 47:36at the Service Centers
- 47:37will have temporary access cards for you.
- 47:39You'll check that out.
- 47:41We know who has them.
- 47:42And then as soon as you get that Spartan ID,
- 47:44which please do the next business day,
- 47:46you return the access card
- 47:47and then we avoid any charges.
- 47:51- Appreciate that.
- 47:52Yeah, that turnaround is a little tight,
- 47:54but it really helps us make sure that those IDs stay active
- 47:57where they need to be and keep the residents safe,
- 47:59so thank you for that.
- 48:01Another fun question that has been a question
- 48:04since before I think we were even students is,
- 48:07"Are students allowed to adjust their own beds?
- 48:09Do they build lofts?
- 48:11Are there tools?
- 48:12What's helpful?"
- 48:13And to clarify a thing that I had mentioned earlier
- 48:16and to kind of share,
- 48:18so there are great instructions on the Live On website
- 48:20for how to modify beds.
- 48:22That being said, in Hubbard Hall specifically,
- 48:25our staff has extra pieces
- 48:28that you need to modify your beds.
- 48:31So if you are living in Hubbard,
- 48:32you are definitely gonna need to work with our staff member
- 48:35to be able to go ahead
- 48:36and get that bed set up the way that you need it to.
- 48:39Outside of that, you can use our staff
- 48:42by submitting a maintenance request.
- 48:43You can use a little Spartan spirit
- 48:45and maybe an Allen wrench
- 48:47and kind of modify things by yourselves.
- 48:49But the website on liveon.com/bed,
- 48:52MSU, our Live On website,
- 48:54we'll post it in the chat here in just a moment.
- 48:56You can go ahead and look up
- 48:58interesting information about beds
- 48:59and how to do that.
- 49:01Bethany, anything on that one?
- 49:03- You're doing so great, Amanda.
- 49:05- Thanks. - You're gonna put
- 49:05the bed link in the chat.
- 49:07I'm gonna add the maintenance request link.
- 49:08I will admit, I have not heard if our incoming students
- 49:11have access to maintenance requests yet.
- 49:13Feel free to go ahead and test that.
- 49:14We were hoping it was gonna go live this week.
- 49:16They have to import the data file for our incoming students.
- 49:19So if you go click on that
- 49:20and it doesn't let you in,
- 49:22it's coming any day now.
- 49:25So you'll soon be able to reach our staff
- 49:27to those maintenance requests.
- 49:29- Yeah, and it is helpful too
- 49:30having that modular furniture in the space.
- 49:32You can really kind of readjust as needed.
- 49:35I think that students are gonna get really good
- 49:37at organizing the room
- 49:39and putting it together in a way that works best for you.
- 49:41And with the modular furniture,
- 49:42a lot of it is meant to be stacked
- 49:44or moved around and things like that.
- 49:46Inspiration might strike you at 3:00 am
- 49:48the night before an exam,
- 49:49so be responsible with that
- 49:51and do things that are helpful,
- 49:53but also make sure you're connecting with your roommate
- 49:55and not just surprise trading spaces designing them
- 49:58because that sometimes isn't the best sort of surprise.
- 50:01All right, looking at some of our other questions,
- 50:05"If you've been given approval for a medically necessary AC,
- 50:09will it be installed prior to move-in?"
- 50:12- Good question.
- 50:13So if you had that approval by August 1st,
- 50:17we are saying yes, we will.
- 50:18And if you get that approval after August 1st,
- 50:21we're gonna do our best.
- 50:22So procuring the right amount of ACs
- 50:26is something that our team strives to have.
- 50:28So sometimes they,
- 50:29if we end up getting more requests than we have,
- 50:32it takes a little bit longer to get those,
- 50:35but our team will get those in as quickly as they can.
- 50:38- Great, thank you.
- 50:40I'm gonna take a sec to divert here
- 50:42and talk about transportation.
- 50:44So as a reminder, all the CATA buses
- 50:48that are on campus are free for students.
- 50:51If it starts with a 3, it's free,
- 50:53and students just have to use their MSU ID to move around.
- 50:56There is an app available for that,
- 50:58and you can check that out.
- 51:00I put the link in the comment section.
- 51:02I'm sorry, I put the link in the chat,
- 51:03so you can check out the app
- 51:05as well as kind of be aware of the schedules and whatnot.
- 51:08But in that same area,
- 51:09we are an incredibly pedestrian-friendly campus,
- 51:12a bike-friendly campus,
- 51:13but we are not necessarily an e-bike-friendly campus.
- 51:18A lot of the batteries
- 51:19that are used in both e-bikes and scooters
- 51:22pose a incredible safety risk
- 51:24for our residents, our buildings, and our communities,
- 51:26and so we do not allow them on campus,
- 51:29especially in the residence halls.
- 51:31You will see there are some line scooters
- 51:33or other scooters available on campus
- 51:36to move to and from classes.
- 51:37They can be very quick,
- 51:39but those are not allowed in the residence halls whatsoever.
- 51:42So that's really kind of important.
- 51:43And again, it's because those batteries
- 51:45pose a huge safety risk.
- 51:47You can TikTok the videos, they're not great.
- 51:50Bethany, do you have any other thoughts about e-bikes
- 51:52or batteries on campus?
- 51:55- Yeah, just that it's a board of trustees ordinance
- 51:58that they are not in any campus building.
- 52:01So while we know that they're a popular tool right now,
- 52:06it really is important for how many people we house
- 52:09for the safety of everyone
- 52:10that we do not allow those into our buildings,
- 52:12and you'll see signs about that
- 52:14pretty much as soon as you walk up to a residence hall.
- 52:17- Yes, and that also includes any version of an e-bike.
- 52:21So I've seen e-unicycles,
- 52:23also doesn't count,
- 52:25you can't use those either.
- 52:26I've seen e-skateboards, same thing,
- 52:29it is the concept,
- 52:30those really are just not safe for our students.
- 52:33So switching gears a little bit,
- 52:35Bethany, I'm gonna have you take this one,
- 52:37"So how is move-in different
- 52:38for international students
- 52:40other than the days that they move in?
- 52:42Do they have access to the dining halls
- 52:44starting on the 21st when they move in?"
- 52:47- So that's a great question,
- 52:49and I really do wanna lean into our partners
- 52:51in the Office of International Students and Scholars.
- 52:54So hopefully this,
- 52:56what we know is our incoming international students
- 52:58are the ones who have the approvals
- 52:59for coming August 21st to the 23rd.
- 53:02Our Housing Assignments Office works closely with OISS.
- 53:06Sorry, we use a lot of acronyms here at MSU,
- 53:08I'm trying not to.
- 53:10But we work closely with them,
- 53:11and so I know there's coordination of understanding
- 53:14who is arriving when as much as possible.
- 53:16So if you have questions about how that goes,
- 53:18please do contact oiss.msu.edu
- 53:22to reach out to get those because we do know
- 53:24that there is an international student orientation,
- 53:28and they will have the best information
- 53:30on what will be available to our students
- 53:32who are arriving over the weekend.
- 53:35- Absolutely.
- 53:36I got two more here as we get to end of time.
- 53:39So first, "How do we change our meal plan,
- 53:41and is there a deadline?"
- 53:43For this one, changing your meal plan is fairly simple
- 53:46and you can do so up to August 20th.
- 53:49So August 20th is the deadline for changing your meal plan,
- 53:52and you'll wanna go to your My Housing account,
- 53:55the same space where you signed your housing contract
- 53:57and selected your meal plan in the first place,
- 53:59and you'll be able to change your meal plan at that point
- 54:02in there up until August 20th.
- 54:04So kind of keep that in mind
- 54:06if that's something that you're considering.
- 54:08Bethany, anything to add on to that portion of it?
- 54:12Or would you like our final question?
- 54:15- So you can downgrade
- 54:18or if you're having-
- 54:20- That's true. - Optional dining plan
- 54:21until August 20th.
- 54:22The great news is if you wanna upgrade your dining plan,
- 54:25that can be done throughout the year.
- 54:28- Mm-hmm, very true. Yes.
- 54:31So our last question has me buzzing with excitement,
- 54:36"Besides microwaves,
- 54:37is there a wattage limit
- 54:39for appliances in the residence hall rooms?"
- 54:43- There is not a specific wattage (stammers) requirement.
- 54:47Ooh, I'm struggling with words today.
- 54:49I will try again.
- 54:50So I don't have a max wattage,
- 54:54and I will say that our buildings are,
- 54:58they were built strong
- 55:00and they have stood the test of time.
- 55:04But with their (stammers) electrical grid,
- 55:07wow, I cannot do it,
- 55:09we would caution how many things you plug in
- 55:12and think about,
- 55:13be thoughtful in how many appliances you need to bring in.
- 55:16So as much as you can coordinate with your roommates,
- 55:19that's really great,
- 55:20particularly for things like microwaves,
- 55:21fridges, things like that.
- 55:24If you don't have to have things plugged in all the time,
- 55:26that would be helpful as well.
- 55:28And so that is not to do anything
- 55:30with our like bill,
- 55:32that's more to do with ensuring that your room
- 55:35has all the electrical needs you have
- 55:37and that we don't trip a breaker
- 55:39that kind of messes with more than one room on the floor,
- 55:42and then you have to contact the Service Center.
- 55:45I wouldn't say it happens often,
- 55:47but I've seen it happen before,
- 55:49and so we would just suggest be thoughtful
- 55:51about what appliances you need to bring.
- 55:54- Fantastic.
- 55:55All right, anything else you'd like to add
- 55:57before we wrap up for the evening?
- 55:59- I do have one.
- 56:00Go back.
- 56:01- Great. - Actually, Amanda Ross,
- 56:03who's the amazing person doing our slides,
- 56:05can we go way back to the calendar slide that was early on?
- 56:09I'm just gonna recap a couple things there.
- 56:14Because I think I like flew right by that one.
- 56:16And I'm sorry for the scrolls, y'all.
- 56:19There we go.
- 56:20Okay, so to recap the dates that we have for move-in.
- 56:24So our international students
- 56:25or really our incoming international students,
- 56:27they are moving in the 21st to the 23rd.
- 56:30We do have other programmatic early arrivals.
- 56:33On the 24th, we have some folks,
- 56:35particularly like our Residential Business Community
- 56:38and some others that have been approved
- 56:40to move in on the 24th.
- 56:42And then our majority of our incoming students
- 56:44will move in between the 25th and the 26th,
- 56:47and our returning students, the 26th and the 27th.
- 56:50One question that I didn't see as much tonight,
- 56:51but we do get asked on social a lot
- 56:54is if I can't find a time here
- 56:57or I wanted to do something,
- 56:58like, can I come in a different date?
- 56:59And so you can't come earlier
- 57:02than the time you've been approved for.
- 57:04So if you don't have an early arrival approved,
- 57:07you can't come before the 25th.
- 57:09If you're a returning student,
- 57:10can't come before the 26th.
- 57:13But if you're not finding a time
- 57:16and you need to come,
- 57:16like you absolutely have to come the 25th
- 57:18and you're an incoming student,
- 57:20our standard times to arrive are 7:30 am to 7:00 pm,
- 57:24that's when we have those move-in time slots.
- 57:26If you do need to come after 7:00 pm, you can,
- 57:29we just wanna stress that you will see less staff.
- 57:31Our staff have been essentially working from 7:00 to 7:00,
- 57:34and so it does get a little lighter
- 57:36in the volunteer and staff support,
- 57:38but you are able to come in.
- 57:40We will have Service Centers open for check-in
- 57:42for those times.
- 57:43So if you have something like that,
- 57:45again, shout out Welcome Team though,
- 57:46if you're able to move,
- 57:47you wanna do Welcome Team and help us with move-in,
- 57:49you can come in on Sunday, that's great.
- 57:52And then if you're a returning student
- 57:54and you're like, "I actually don't really want to come
- 57:56on the 26th or the 27th,
- 57:57I wanna come on the 28th, 29th, or 30th,"
- 58:00that is fine too,
- 58:01you are able to do that.
- 58:02Our Service Centers are open.
- 58:04We suggest coming between 8:00 and 5:00
- 58:06because that is when you'll have the most support,
- 58:08but you are able to come at other times.
- 58:10And so, and then if you have a unique exception
- 58:12that you just wanna talk through,
- 58:15please contact our Housing Assignments Office
- 58:17for further information.
- 58:18But I did wanna recap
- 58:19that people can come later if they would like.
- 58:22We know people wanna usually get here
- 58:24as quickly as we are able to accommodate them,
- 58:27but we do get questions about
- 58:28if people can come at a later time or at a later date.
- 58:32And then I just wanna say that we're super excited
- 58:35that when you do get here, we're here for you.
- 58:38The energy of campus
- 58:39when our students return is really exciting.
- 58:42And on behalf of the entire department of REHS
- 58:45and on behalf of Culinary Services,
- 58:48we're very excited to see you soon.
- 58:51And Amanda, what else do you have to close us out?
- 58:55- Oh, I have my favorite piece of unsolicited alumni advice
- 58:59that I like to share with all incoming groups as I can.
- 59:03It can be very overwhelming being on campus
- 59:05and navigating the transition from a smaller space
- 59:08to an institution with 50,000 other students at it,
- 59:12and a way to make that a little bit easier
- 59:15is remembering that 30 seconds of courage
- 59:18can change your life in the best way possible.
- 59:22Campus is gonna be filled with opportunities
- 59:24where you are gonna sit next to people in class
- 59:26for an entire semester at a time,
- 59:28you're gonna pass the same people on the sidewalks
- 59:30or use the same study lounges, resources,
- 59:33or even just seeing them in the dining halls.
- 59:35And taking 30 seconds and just saying, "I can do this,"
- 59:38and saying, "Hi," and introducing yourself
- 59:40and making that connection
- 59:42could lead you to a new best friend
- 59:44or a new major or a new exciting pastime.
- 59:48Lots of opportunities to learn new things on campus
- 59:51and make those connections.
- 59:52So being brave and introducing yourself and saying, "Hi,"
- 59:55and taking that first step to building a connection
- 59:57or a relationship is gonna get you that much closer
- 59:59to finding your people that much faster
- 1:00:01and feeling ingrained in the campus community
- 1:00:03and trying new things
- 1:00:04and being a part of all of that excitement
- 1:00:06that Bethany was mentioning.
- 1:00:07So 30 seconds of courage, lean in,
- 1:00:10and we appreciate your time.
- 1:00:12Thank you so much for coming in today,
- 1:00:14and we'll finish wrapping up questions here in the Q&A.
- 1:00:17Check out the recording
- 1:00:18if you have any other follow-up questions or send emails,
- 1:00:21and we look forward to seeing you in a few weeks.
- 1:00:23Go Green!
