  1. 0:02our next presenter is originally from
  2. 0:05shaune Kansas she is a PhD student in
  3. 0:08kinesiology when she's not busy with her
  4. 0:10lab rats she loves spending time with
  5. 0:12her adorable guinea pig
  6. 0:15Elton Ashley enjoys the outdoors and
  7. 0:18never misses a chance to play board
  8. 0:20games with her friends this year she's
  9. 0:22focused on improving her public speaking
  10. 0:24skills and setting realistic goals to
  11. 0:27push herself further what a better way
  12. 0:29to do that then here at 3mt would you
  13. 0:32please welcome Ashley
  14. 0:36[Applause]
  15. 0:45baranek test again okay every time we
  16. 0:49exercise or are Physically Active even
  17. 0:52if it's as simple as walking up the
  18. 0:54stairs or doing chores around the house
  19. 0:56our body has to make physiological
  20. 0:58adjustments one of of those adjustments
  21. 1:00is an increase in blood pressure this
  22. 1:03increase in blood pressure helps to
  23. 1:05promote an increase in blood flow to
  24. 1:07working skeletal muscle in a healthy
  25. 1:09individual a small to moderate increase
  26. 1:12in blood pressure is beneficial and
  27. 1:14helps us complete daily tasks of living
  28. 1:16however and when a cardiovascular
  29. 1:18disease patient exercises their increase
  30. 1:21in blood pressure is much larger this
  31. 1:24exaggerated blood pressure response to
  32. 1:26activity puts them at risk for adverse
  33. 1:28cardiovascular events such as heart
  34. 1:30attack or stroke currently glucagon like
  35. 1:34peptide 1 receptor agonists or gp1s such
  36. 1:37as OIC are largely prescribed for
  37. 1:40diabetes and weight loss however this
  38. 1:43class of drugs have also been shown to
  39. 1:44benefit cardiovascular health due to
  40. 1:47their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
  41. 1:49properties this led us to hypothesize
  42. 1:52that gp1s may be used to benefit
  43. 1:55cardiovascular disease and blood
  44. 1:57pressure control and exercise in a rat
  45. 1:59model of cardiovascular disease to do
  46. 2:02this we surgically induce peripheral
  47. 2:04artery disease or pad in a group of rats
  48. 2:08pad is a common form of cardiovascular
  49. 2:10disease we also teach these rats to then
  50. 2:12run on a treadmill so that we can
  51. 2:13measure their blood pressure response to
  52. 2:15exercise our lab has previously
  53. 2:17demonstrated that this rat model of pad
  54. 2:20produces that exaggerated blood pressure
  55. 2:22response to activity just like that seen
  56. 2:24in pad patients on experiment day our
  57. 2:27pad rats complete a control bout of
  58. 2:30treadmill exercise and then receive a
  59. 2:32single dose of a
  60. 2:34gp1 then a second exercise bout is
  61. 2:36performed and we can compare that blood
  62. 2:38pressure response from the control and
  63. 2:41post glp1 bout in order to determine if
  64. 2:43there were any effects of the glp1 on
  65. 2:46blood pressure incredibly that single
  66. 2:49dose of a gp1 was actually able to
  67. 2:52decrease that blood pressure response in
  68. 2:54our pad rats if glp1 Administration
  69. 2:57could improve blood pressure control in
  70. 3:00a cardiovascular disease patient this
  71. 3:02could reduce their risk for stroke or
  72. 3:04heart attack this class of drugs has
  73. 3:07already been approved for use in humans
  74. 3:08so we are very hopeful that these
  75. 3:10results May translate and benefit this
  76. 3:12population of patients in the near
  77. 3:14future by allowing these patients to
  78. 3:16more safely complete daily tasks of
  79. 3:18living such as walking up the stairs or
  80. 3:20doing chores we hope to both extend and
  81. 3:23improve their overall quality of life
  82. 3:25thank you
  83. 3:27[Applause]
