- 0:00Hey everybody, it's Nathaniel here with
- 0:01the Building Officials Association of
- 0:03Texas. I just wanted to remind you in a
- 0:05few short weeks we'll be gathering for
- 0:07our annual boat conference and this year
- 0:09we're going to be in Waco, Texas. Now
- 0:12I'm sure you know, but Waco, Texas has
- 0:14seen a boom in development and
- 0:15redevelopment in recent years and
- 0:17building safety professionals like
- 0:18yourself have been a key component to
- 0:20that growth, ensuring that these new
- 0:22structures and rehab structures are code
- 0:25compliant and remain safe for the
- 0:27public. This year's boat conference will
- 0:29be held at the AC Hotel in downtown
- 0:31Waco. And last year, the board and I had
- 0:33an opportunity to tour the facility. And
- 0:35I've got to tell you, it is a phenomenal
- 0:36facility, and you won't be disappointed.
- 0:38So, if you haven't registered for the
- 0:40boat conference yet, I want to highly
- 0:41encourage you to do that. Uh you do have
- 0:43a short window remaining. Uh so, if you
- 0:45go to boatx.org,
- 0:47uh there's a red register now button on
- 0:50the front page. You can't miss it. Now,
- 0:52after you register for the conference on
- 0:54the main page, you'll find a link at the
- 0:55top toolbar that says annual conference.
- 0:58When you click that, uh it's going to
- 1:00detail uh the itinerary for the week. Uh
- 1:03you'll be able to uh get a highlight of
- 1:05kind of what the breakout sessions are
- 1:06going to be. Um and then this year, I
- 1:08want to bring something uh to your
- 1:09attention about our Texas shootout. Now,
- 1:11in years before, we usually hold that
- 1:13Texas Shootout the first day of the
- 1:14conference that night. Uh it's a great
- 1:16opportunity for networking. Um, and it's
- 1:19typically held on the at the venue
- 1:21itself, but this year we're going to be
- 1:22going offsite to the main event in Waco,
- 1:25and transportation will be provided at
- 1:27the hotel, uh, meet at the lobby. Uh,
- 1:29it's from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. I'm really
- 1:31excited about this year's breakout
- 1:33sessions. As a building official, one of
- 1:35the things I, uh, I'm constantly, uh,
- 1:38thinking about is how can we improve
- 1:39efficiency, how can we improve customer
- 1:41service. I'm also interested in how AI
- 1:44is affecting our industry uh and how do
- 1:46we navigate those particular things. Uh
- 1:48and then I'm a big believer in ethics.
- 1:50Uh so I'm excited to learn a little bit
- 1:52more about how we sharpen our ethics
- 1:54skills as code officials. Also, we're
- 1:56going to be getting expanded information
- 1:58about ICC 500 and that very important
- 2:00storm shelter review that a lot of folks
- 2:02uh wanted some more information on last
- 2:04year. Uh we'll be getting an update from
- 2:06NFPA and our partners over there. Uh and
- 2:10uh Jim Oak's going to be uh talking
- 2:11about and presenting the disaster
- 2:13coordinator training session. And so if
- 2:16you've never participated in that
- 2:17disaster training, um I highly encourage
- 2:20you to make sure you're in that uh work
- 2:22session. You know, one of the great
- 2:23things about the Building Officials
- 2:24Association of Texas is that it provides
- 2:27a disaster response team, a volunteer
- 2:29group of folks uh that will show up to
- 2:32your community when needed, when called
- 2:33upon uh if you have a natural disaster,
- 2:36and they perform those very crucial
- 2:38damage assessments uh that are often
- 2:40needed for um FEMA and and things of
- 2:43that nature um to get folks back up on
- 2:46their feet. And so that group will come
- 2:47out and actually perform those services
- 2:50so that the local jurisdiction can
- 2:52continue operations. Can't forget to
- 2:54mention that that disaster response
- 2:56service is actually provided free of
- 2:58charge to the local jurisdictions and
- 3:00it's funded by your membership as part
- 3:02of the building officials association of
- 3:04Texas. I want to bring something else to
- 3:06your attention. If while you're on the
- 3:08boat website, if you'll click the news
- 3:10link at the top toolbar, scroll down uh
- 3:13and visit the 2025 survey. So this year
- 3:15at the conference, we're going to survey
- 3:18uh the group again during our building
- 3:19official Q&A. Uh and this is where we
- 3:22get key information from our departments
- 3:24throughout the state. So whether it's uh
- 3:26the number of FTEEs that you have in
- 3:28your department, size of your training
- 3:30budget, size of your jurisdiction, uh
- 3:33but this year we want to get a little
- 3:34bit more data. Last year uh we published
- 3:38the 2025 survey. Uh, and I know it's
- 3:41budget season for a lot of us, uh, in
- 3:43municipal government right now. And so,
- 3:45we've got some key metrics and data on
- 3:47that report that you can reference when
- 3:49you're presenting your budget requests
- 3:51to city council. So, I want to encourage
- 3:53you to take a look at that 2025 report.
- 3:55And then this year when we do that
- 3:57survey, I want to encourage you again uh
- 4:00to participate
- 4:01uh so that we can get more data uh and
- 4:04hopefully uh bring more exposure to what
- 4:06it is that we do as an industry. Last
- 4:08but not least, we have a number of board
- 4:10positions up for election this year. Uh
- 4:12so if you have an interest in serving on
- 4:14the vote board or a number of our
- 4:16committees, I want to encourage you to
- 4:17go ahead and fill out that application.
- 4:20It's available on the website and we'll
- 4:21have some information at the conference
- 4:23as well. Every year I look forward to
- 4:24this conference. I'm sure you do as
- 4:26well. I'm looking forward to seeing
- 4:27friends uh and making some new ones as
- 4:29well. So uh sign up, register now, don't
- 4:33delay. See that?
