- 0:16>> Hello and welcome back everyone to
- 0:17Unreal Engine 5 beginners guide to
- 0:18building an environment. In the last
- 0:20lesson we left it off by setting a
- 0:22little bit more off this roof and
- 0:24getting some texture in for it. And now
- 0:26we're going to set up some supports for
- 0:29this roof. So, before doing that though,
- 0:31I'm going to turn off my modeling mode.
- 0:34So, I'm just going to go on to the upper
- 0:35left corner, go to select mode like so,
- 0:38and I think I might actually just lower
- 0:40the content browser as well since we
- 0:42don't need it this much at this moment.
- 0:45And right now what we're going to do is
- 0:46actually, I think we're going to start
- 0:48off by getting ourselves the
- 0:51things that we're going to use. So,
- 0:52within MegaScans folder, within the free
- 0:55assets group, we're going to go and get
- 0:58ourselves a wooden beam.
- 1:00Just trying to think which one would
- 1:02look the best in this case. Maybe it's
- 1:04this one. That might look quite nice.
- 1:07Yeah, okay. We're going to start with
- 1:08the wooden beam that we had.
- 1:10And that's going to look quite nice for
- 1:12the base sides. It's just going to help
- 1:15us to break it down. It doesn't have too
- 1:16much of an intense detail in comparison,
- 1:18for example, to this beam over here. And
- 1:21it's just a nice simplistic sort of a
- 1:23looking mesh. So, we're going to
- 1:25actually make use out of that.
- 1:27We're going to drag it to the side like
- 1:29so.
- 1:31Make sure we have it selected first.
- 1:33And then we're just going to drag it
- 1:35like so.
- 1:36And now we're going to actually position
- 1:38it
- 1:39to the side of the roof. And I think
- 1:41we'll start on by having it set
- 1:44vertically. Or actually, sorry. Let's
- 1:46start by doing it the horizontal lines
- 1:48instead. I think that's going to be much
- 1:50easier to start it off. So, let's go
- 1:52ahead and have it selected.
- 1:54Let's rotate it 90 degrees with the
- 1:56snapping tool enabled, of course.
- 1:58And we're going to position it to our
- 2:01side.
- 2:02Now, I think by default, this beam is a
- 2:04little bit too thick for us, so we're
- 2:05going to click R and we're going to
- 2:10I think we're going to Yeah, we're just
- 2:11going to squish it down. So, let's go
- 2:12ahead and have it selected and then have
- 2:15this
- 2:16gizmo behave like that.
- 2:18So, by just dragging this down,
- 2:20we're going to get this sort of a beam,
- 2:22which I think is going to be quite nice.
- 2:25All we need to do now is stretch it out
- 2:27a little bit.
- 2:28Not too much, though. I think that's
- 2:29going to be quite all right.
- 2:31And now we're just going to attach it to
- 2:33the side of our roof.
- 2:35So, in regards to how we want to attach
- 2:37it, it really depends on the way we want
- 2:40our roof to be broken down, but because
- 2:42we have some tiling of the texture
- 2:44coming from the top and our main camera
- 2:47is going to be more or less focused from
- 2:50a higher perspective, we want to make
- 2:51sure we break apart some of those edges.
- 2:54So, we want to make sure that we leave a
- 2:56bit of a gap in this area over here.
- 2:59And I think that'll do the trick. Maybe
- 3:01a little bit lower down.
- 3:03And that might look a little bit better
- 3:05even.
- 3:06Something like that.
- 3:07I think that'll work.
- 3:09So, now we just want to make sure we
- 3:10stretch it out all the way through end.
- 3:13And let's go ahead and do that.
- 3:15Just going to stretch it just a little
- 3:16bit more like so.
- 3:18Put it to the side
- 3:20and see how this looks.
- 3:23So, we're not worried about the end too
- 3:24much because we're going to be having
- 3:26another plank going diagonally as well.
- 3:29So, we don't need to worry about it too
- 3:31much.
- 3:32And I think we just stretch it out a
- 3:34little bit more even so. And that might
- 3:38do the trick. I think that's going to
- 3:40look good.
- 3:42Now, let's make sure we do it on the
- 3:43other side as well.
- 3:45I'm just going to grab this entire
- 3:46plank, duplicate it, put it on the side
- 3:49like so.
- 3:51Then rotate this around 90°.
- 3:54And we're just going to grab it back.
- 3:56Seems like it's been rotated all the way
- 3:58to the end like so.
- 4:00And just position our other beam in the
- 4:03other side.
- 4:05Of course, we need to I think raise this
- 4:07up a little bit this time to make sure
- 4:09we don't have any of the ends
- 4:12sticking through for this type of roof.
- 4:15For this attached roof that we have at
- 4:17the front.
- 4:18And
- 4:19it actually helps us out quite a bit
- 4:20because this beam ends up sitting on top
- 4:23of the other beam, which is quite nice.
- 4:25It's the way it would be built if we had
- 4:28it on
- 4:30it in real life. So, for example, if the
- 4:33beams were to support this roof,
- 4:35we'd have it something like that. Now,
- 4:36I'm trying to figure out why it's doing
- 4:38it
- 4:40in a weird kind of way. I'm going to
- 4:42deselect it and select it back. Now, try
- 4:44to expand it and it seems like I'm
- 4:46having a bit of an issue while
- 4:48scaling this up. And I'm just going to
- 4:50look at my
- 4:51folder and I see like both of these are
- 4:54within the same object. So, I messed it
- 4:56up while making a duplicate out of it.
- 4:58Just going to go ahead and select the
- 5:00static mesh like so.
- 5:03And then I'm just going to delete it
- 5:04because
- 5:05we don't want this to happen. So,
- 5:08I'm going to delete it just like that.
- 5:09Make a duplicate out of it. And
- 5:12hopefully, again, I messed it up. Seems
- 5:14like it gets selected the static mesh
- 5:16component. So, I'm just going to
- 5:17deselect it and select the beam back up.
- 5:19And now the selection is going to be set
- 5:21within the instance itself and not the
- 5:24static mesh component.
- 5:26So, now when we make a duplicate, we can
- 5:29see that it just makes a duplicate
- 5:30within our outliner. So, that's quite
- 5:33all right. So, if you're having the same
- 5:34kind of an issue every once in a while,
- 5:36just make sure you deselect it and
- 5:38select it back onto the mesh. And that
- 5:40should fix the issue.
- 5:42So, right now I'm just going to
- 5:44raise it up a little bit just like I did
- 5:45previously.
- 5:47Put it to the side like so, and of
- 5:49course we need to stretch it a little
- 5:51bit outwards like so.
- 5:54Now, on this end, we might not want it
- 5:56to be a sharp because we're stretching
- 5:59out so much, we're going to get this
- 6:01angle to be quite extreme, but I think
- 6:04that might still be okay. Worst case, we
- 6:06can always rotate it around when we're
- 6:08building the diagonal edges for this
- 6:11roof. So, I think for now we're just
- 6:13going to leave it as is.
- 6:15And now, of course we need to do the do
- 6:18the other end as well. So, let's go
- 6:20ahead and do that.
- 6:21I'm just going to grab this one over
- 6:23here,
- 6:24and just holding alt,
- 6:26put it on the other end like so.
- 6:29You can just attach it just like that.
- 6:33And I think in this case,
- 6:35because we're having such a long roof,
- 6:36we're just going to actually shrink this
- 6:38entire beam down. So, when I see the
- 6:40scale for this area, and it's already
- 6:43being double the size, and we're getting
- 6:45some stretched out textures, so we don't
- 6:46want this to happen. Although, this is
- 6:49somewhat of a small instance, and we're
- 6:51not going to get too close to it. We
- 6:53just need to make sure we have an
- 6:54overall kind of a shape and overall
- 6:56texture to be set up properly. So, even
- 6:58if we were to stretch it out across the
- 7:00roof, we'd probably be able to get away
- 7:02with it. But, just to be on the safe
- 7:04side, we're going to make a duplicate
- 7:06out of it.
- 7:08And I'm just going to hold alt, drag it
- 7:10to the left side like so.
- 7:12And I think it's going to be a little
- 7:13bit too big at this moment, so I'm just
- 7:15going to
- 7:16position it so they'll be next to one
- 7:18another.
- 7:19Grab both of them and shrink them both
- 7:21down.
- 7:22Just like that.
- 7:24I think that's going to
- 7:26Maybe we need a little bit more
- 7:27actually.
- 7:29Or we could just shove it to the side
- 7:30like so,
- 7:32and that might do the trick.
- 7:34Now, looking at it though, this roof
- 7:36seems like it has a bit of a gap. It's
- 7:38actually quite an easy fix right now, so
- 7:40I'm just going to grab this one
- 7:42and
- 7:43just going to stretch it out. I don't
- 7:44think there's going to be much of an
- 7:46issue even if you do it just a little
- 7:48bit because it's such a small gap that
- 7:50we don't even have to worry about it.
- 7:52Or, actually, better yet, if we go to
- 7:54modeling mode,
- 7:55just going to modeling mode like so,
- 7:59going to triangle edit,
- 8:01making sure that the
- 8:03vertices are selected and the edges and
- 8:06faces are deselected, then I'm just
- 8:08going to grab this side and simply drag
- 8:10it out like so.
- 8:12And usually that might cause an issue
- 8:14because we have a duplicate on the other
- 8:17side, but because this other side is
- 8:20going into the roof itself, that's not
- 8:22going to be an issue for us. So, all we
- 8:25got to do is hit accept and that'll fix
- 8:27an issue.
- 8:29Or, it should be.
- 8:31But, we cannot modify this mesh because
- 8:34it's actually a I'm just going to try
- 8:36doing that again, actually.
- 8:38Going to make sure we have it selected.
- 8:40Hit triangle edit
- 8:42and see what happens.
- 8:44Accept. Yes, we cannot modify a built-in
- 8:47engine asset of basic shapes. So, what
- 8:50is happening right now is because we set
- 8:53this mesh up as a basic instance, we're
- 8:56going to have this sort of an issue. So,
- 8:58I think the easiest way would be, in
- 8:59order to fix that, we're just going to
- 9:01go within our details tab. Just going to
- 9:04lower this down a little bit.
- 9:05So, going to have this mesh selected
- 9:09and find the static mesh that should be
- 9:12within this details tab.
- 9:14So, the plane over here.
- 9:17Now, we're going to go ahead and simply
- 9:19go browse to plane in content browser,
- 9:22which should pop us in within the engine
- 9:24content basic shapes folder. And if
- 9:27you're not seeing this, just in case, go
- 9:29into the settings tab for the content
- 9:31browser like so,
- 9:33and make sure you have show engine
- 9:34content and show plugins enabled. With
- 9:37having those two, you're able to now go
- 9:39into the folders for the default engine
- 9:42content, and usually I'll warn you right
- 9:45away though that you don't want to
- 9:46change anything within these folders,
- 9:48and instead you just want to make
- 9:50duplicates out of them. So, right now if
- 9:52I were to select this plane like so,
- 9:54click control C, then go back into my
- 9:56content browser,
- 9:58and we're just going to go click all,
- 10:01click content and generated, and we can
- 10:03just go and paste it into next to our
- 10:06other static meshes. So, now that we
- 10:08have it like so, we can have a plane and
- 10:10just replace this plane with the one
- 10:13that we have it selected, and now it's
- 10:15going to show us that it is located
- 10:18within our phone folder that we have all
- 10:20all of our static meshes generated.
- 10:23So, now once we have it like so, we can
- 10:25go to triangle edit and grab these edges
- 10:28like so, move them to the side.
- 10:31Seems like I
- 10:32made a misselection, so I'm just going
- 10:33to cancel it. Make a selection for the
- 10:36square for the plane,
- 10:38then make a selection for all of these
- 10:40vertices to the side,
- 10:41and
- 10:43drag it entirely like so to the edge.
- 10:46And because we replaced this static mesh
- 10:48with our own one, we're going to hit
- 10:51accept, and the other one that was
- 10:53duplicate is not going to be changed.
- 10:56And that is because we basically changed
- 10:59up the way that material instance is
- 11:02being used. So, right now this is the
- 11:04plane that is being used by this side,
- 11:06while the other side
- 11:08is having a different plane, the
- 11:10original one that we had previously. So,
- 11:13that is one way of fixing the roof, and
- 11:15one way of adjusting it even if we don't
- 11:19use a default static shape that we had
- 11:22previously. We can always just switch
- 11:24that up with our own custom static
- 11:26shape, and then
- 11:28make adjustments to it that way.
- 11:30So, anyway I'm just going to go and turn
- 11:32off the modeling mode like so and finish
- 11:34off the borders for this roof. So I
- 11:36think I'm just going to make a selection
- 11:37out of these two. Just expand it just a
- 11:40little bit more
- 11:41and just going to drag it out to the
- 11:44side like so. Actually just going to
- 11:46turn off the scale ability to low. I
- 11:48think I'm having some performance issues
- 11:50at the moment.
- 11:52There you go.
- 11:54So I'm just going to stretch it out a
- 11:56little bit,
- 11:57put it to the side like so. Maybe
- 12:00a little bit more.
- 12:02I think that's going to be all right.
- 12:03Now of course we need to do it for the
- 12:05other end as well. So I'm just going to
- 12:06hold alt and drag it
- 12:09to the edge like so. Make sure we turn
- 12:12this around 90 degrees
- 12:14and put it to the side since it's also
- 12:16quite a long type of a roof. I think
- 12:18that's going to be all right.
- 12:20We're just going to make sure we have it
- 12:22set properly. I think this has to be a
- 12:24little bit lower down
- 12:26like so. That's going to be quite all
- 12:28right.
- 12:29And we're just going to place it right
- 12:30on the side.
- 12:32And actually
- 12:33by the looks of it we might need to have
- 12:35three beams over here. So I'm just going
- 12:36to hold alt, make a duplicate out of it,
- 12:39put it to the side like so.
- 12:42Grab all three of them and squish them
- 12:44down a little bit and I think that's
- 12:46going to look quite nice all in all.
- 12:49So we're just going to make sure we
- 12:51cover all the ends
- 12:54just like that.
- 12:57And I think that's going to look quite
- 12:58nice. So even though we're having some
- 13:00gaps because they're so nicely set up,
- 13:02we're going to have it made look like
- 13:04they're just different chunks of wood
- 13:06and that's actually going to add a
- 13:07little bit of an extra detail towards
- 13:09our house, towards our little hut. So
- 13:11yeah, that's going to look quite all
- 13:13right.
- 13:14We're going to end our lesson now and in
- 13:16the next one we're going to continue
- 13:17with the roof and set up some diagonal
- 13:19beams to go across our roof section over
- 13:21here. So thank you so much for watching
- 13:23and I'll see you in a bit.
