20 GTA Secrets That Blew Our MINDS — Transcript

- 0:01Grand Theft Auto is an Easter egg
- 0:05factory. It is a series rich in stuff to
- 0:08find, and some of it is just larger than
- 0:12life. Hi folks, it's Falcon, and today
- 0:14on Game Ranks, 20 GTA Easter eggs that
- 0:18became legendary. Starting off with
- 0:21number 20, a literal Easter egg from GTA
- 0:24Vice City. No better place to start than
- 0:27an all-time classic, right? By the time
- 0:29Vice City came out in 2002, Easter eggs
- 0:32were an established feature in video
- 0:35games. The first Easter egg anyone knows
- 0:36about was the 1973 game Moonlander, and
- 0:40that was 29 years old by the time Vice
- 0:42City released. The term Easter egg
- 0:44widely considered to be coined in 1979
- 0:47in relation to the Atari game Adventure,
- 0:50so having secrets in your game was not a
- 0:52big revelation. Still, these sorts of
- 0:54hidden secrets weren't as widely known
- 0:56and discussed online like how they have
- 0:58now. Sure, if you were buying strategy
- 1:01guides and gaming magazines in the '90s,
- 1:03you were probably at least partially
- 1:05aware of some Easter eggs, but it wasn't
- 1:07until the late '90s and early 2000s,
- 1:10when the proliferation of the internet
- 1:11really hit a saturation point, that
- 1:13knowledge of Easter eggs became
- 1:15widespread and very, very easily
- 1:18accessible, which is, as you may be
- 1:21aware of, just about the time GTA 3 and
- 1:24Vice City came out. The game's
- 1:26popularity, alongside the ease of
- 1:28sharing information, made it so
- 1:30everybody was becoming aware of the
- 1:32secrets in these games, but you still
- 1:33had to go out and see it yourself. You
- 1:35couldn't just watch a YouTube video
- 1:37about it. So, there's still a sense of
- 1:39discovery around stuff like this, and
- 1:41that's why the literal Easter egg in
- 1:43Vice City is so memorable. As an actual
- 1:45Easter egg, it's very basic, but it's
- 1:47well hidden enough and goofy enough that
- 1:49[music] finding it feels like an
- 1:50accomplishment. All you have to do to
- 1:52find this thing is look near the Vice
- 1:54City news building in downtown Vice
- 1:55City. [music] There's a way to get up on
- 1:57the roof and then jump through this
- 1:58window which is a really flat texture
- 2:00and has no collision on it.
- 2:12So, then you pass through it, you enter
- 2:14a room containing a simple brown Easter
- 2:16egg on a pedestal. The pedestal is a
- 2:18good touch. It adds some class to this
- 2:20thing. And like a lot of GTA's Easter
- 2:22eggs, it feels like it's making fun of
- 2:24you. But instead of just some slightly
- 2:26amusing text, you get a fully modeled
- 2:28and textured literal Easter egg. So,
- 2:30they did put effort into it, which is
- 2:32more than I can say about some. I mean,
- 2:35to be frank, similarly legendary Easter
- 2:37eggs in past and and future GTA games.
- 2:41And number 19 is Michelle Daniels from
- 2:43GTA 5. Out of all the returning
- 2:45characters from GTA 4 and GTA 5, this is
- 2:48the easiest to miss. It's stuff like
- 2:50this where you just have to respect
- 2:52Rockstar's attention to detail. The FBI
- 2:55agent in Three's Company could have been
- 2:57anyone, but they brought back a minor
- 2:59GTA 4 character just for a
- 3:01blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo that most
- 3:02players probably didn't even realize was
- 3:04there.
- 3:04>> Cinema equipment, not surveillance.
- 3:08>> Grab his other arm.
- 3:09>> No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 3:11>> [laughter]
- 3:13[screaming]
- 3:14>> I didn't, at least the first time, and
- 3:17that's what makes it so memorable. Like,
- 3:19do you remember Michelle from GTA 4? She
- 3:21was Niko's first storyline girlfriend
- 3:24who was eventually revealed to be a
- 3:25double agent working for an unnamed
- 3:27government organization. She's the one
- 3:29that brings Niko to the United Liberty
- 3:31Paper Company. Yeah? Yeah, remember?
- 3:35>> I'm sorry that I lied to you.
- 3:38And
- 3:39and weirdly, in some ways, you're a nice
- 3:41guy.
- 3:42Better than the creeps I normally date.
- 3:44>> Anyway, after that, she's gone from the
- 3:47game and Kate McReary replaces her as
- 3:49Niko's canon girlfriend until she shows
- 3:51up in GTA 5. She only gets one line and
- 3:53it's hard to tell that it's supposed to
- 3:55be her, but her identity card has
- 3:56Michelle on it confirming it is the same
- 3:58character. The funny thing is that while
- 4:01the identity card does make it clear who
- 4:03it's supposed to be, it also creates a
- 4:04small continuity error because Michelle
- 4:06was her cover name and her actual name
- 4:09as revealed in GTA 4 is Karen. They did
- 4:12at least go back and fix this when she
- 4:14appears again in GTA Online where she
- 4:16assists with the setup for the Humane
- 4:18Labs Heist and is properly identified by
- 4:20her actual name. In hindsight, it's kind
- 4:23of odd that out of all the characters
- 4:25from GTA 4 make a cameo in GTA 5, she's
- 4:28probably one of the most significant
- 4:29while being someone you might not even
- 4:31realize is a character from GTA 4. And
- 4:33number 18 is the Statue of Happiness in
- 4:36GTA 4. Speaking of GTA 4, I got to talk
- 4:39about the most Easter egg dense location
- 4:41in the entire series, the Statue of
- 4:43Happiness. This is, as I'm sure you're
- 4:45all aware, the game's version of the
- 4:47Statue of Liberty but with some
- 4:49noticeable alterations. From far away,
- 4:51it looks pretty similar to the real deal
- 4:53but closer up, you see it's I mean
- 4:55instead of a torch in the right hand,
- 4:57it's holding a cup of coffee which is
- 4:59either a reference to the fact that tons
- 5:01of people go to Starbucks or a reference
- 5:04to the hot coffee fiasco from I mean I'm
- 5:07not going to cover that cuz it's
- 5:08probably one of the most legendary
- 5:09pieces of content in the series and it
- 5:11it wasn't an Easter egg though. A little
- 5:13too spicy for YouTube also.
- 5:15If you have to ask hot coffee is, just
- 5:17ask your parents. The face of the statue
- 5:19is pretty peculiar as well. It's a
- 5:21spitting image of Hillary Clinton who is
- 5:23a key player in the whole government
- 5:24response to the hot coffee thing back
- 5:26when she was a senator. That further
- 5:28credence to the fact that that's
- 5:29supposed to be her. The name for the
- 5:31specific texture file is stat hilberty
- 5:3501.wdr.
- 5:37So, I think it's pretty safe to say
- 5:38that's what it is. If you manage to get
- 5:40up into the raised area of the statue,
- 5:42which is easier said than done, there's
- 5:44no normal way to get up there at least
- 5:46not in the main game. You can find a
- 5:47sign that says, "No hidden content this
- 5:49way." which is a pretty common Rockstar
- 5:52Easter egg joke, so I can see players
- 5:53reaching this point and assuming there's
- 5:54nothing else. But, the text is actually
- 5:56another false wall with no collision
- 5:58that leads to the literal beating heart
- 6:00of the statue. This is the most infamous
- 6:03Easter egg in the game, if not the
- 6:04entire series. It's a giant beating
- 6:06heart in the middle of the statue held
- 6:07up by chains and bathing the entire area
- 6:10in a sinister red glow. All that you can
- 6:12hear is the beating of the massive
- 6:14heart.
- 6:25And it makes the place pretty damn
- 6:26creepy, especially if you just stumbled
- 6:28in here not knowing what to expect.
- 6:30There's a reason why this Easter egg in
- 6:32this particular area has left such a
- 6:34massive mark in the entire GTA
- 6:35community. It's just so weird and dark,
- 6:37but also goofy. It's unlike any other
- 6:39Easter egg in the series. And number 17
- 6:42is the Gant Bridge Easter egg from San
- 6:44Andreas. Massive open-worlds aren't
- 6:47anything special now, but in 2004, San
- 6:49Andreas was a freaking revelation. It
- 6:51seemed impossibly huge. They had to be
- 6:53hiding all kinds of crazy secrets all
- 6:54around the world, right? Well, Rockstar
- 6:56knew we would be curious, so they
- 6:58planned accordingly with this dryly
- 7:00insulting Easter egg that quickly became
- 7:02a talking point at recesses across the
- 7:04nation. Gant Bridge, San Andreas's
- 7:07answer to the Golden Gate Bridge, is
- 7:09very large. It's logical to assume there
- 7:11might be something up there knowing
- 7:13Rockstar's history with this sort of
- 7:15thing. So, get the jetpack, you blast
- 7:17your way up there. You might expect to
- 7:18find the next mind-blowing Rockstar
- 7:20Easter egg only to be met with a message
- 7:22that says, "There are no Easter eggs up
- 7:25here. Go away." What's so legendary
- 7:27about this particular secret is that,
- 7:29unlike stuff like that literal Easter
- 7:31egg in Vice City, I bet a majority of
- 7:33people who originally found this message
- 7:35found it all on their own. By the time
- 7:37San Andreas rolled around, the Easter
- 7:39egg was a thing. Like, Easter egg fever
- 7:41was in full swing. We all knew about
- 7:43him, and we all wanted to be the first
- 7:44to find something. So, tons of kids
- 7:46probably came up with the bright idea of
- 7:48flying to the top of the Gantt Bridge,
- 7:49completely independent of one another.
- 7:52The Easter eggs we actually experience
- 7:54are always going to be the most
- 7:55memorable ones, of course. And out of
- 7:57everything on this list, this is
- 7:58probably the one seen by the most people
- 8:00without any any kind of assistance or
- 8:02guide. We all just want to see what was
- 8:03on top of that damn bridge.
- 8:05And number 16 is the resizable moon in
- 8:08the GTA 3D trilogy. One of the weirdest
- 8:10features about the GTA 3 trilogy was
- 8:13that you could shoot the moon with a
- 8:14sniper rifle, and for some reason it it
- 8:16cycles between three different sizes.
- 8:23>> He ain't no gentleman, that one.
- 8:28>> Nothing else else works. You got to use
- 8:30a sniper rifle. I don't know why this
- 8:32was in the game, and neither did anybody
- 8:34else for quite a few years. Uh everyone
- 8:36just assumed it was another one of
- 8:38Rockstar's weird jokes. But in 2023, a
- 8:41former technical at Rockstar North
- 8:42revealed the reason is because artists
- 8:44couldn't seem to agree on how big the
- 8:46moon should be in Grand Theft Auto 3.
- 8:48Some wanted it smaller, some wanted it
- 8:50bigger. So, in response, he added a way
- 8:52for the artists to adjust the size of
- 8:54the moon on the fly, so they could come
- 8:56to an agreement about how big they
- 8:57wanted the moon to be. So, of course,
- 8:59nobody ever approached him again on the
- 9:00subject, and the sniper rifle moon thing
- 9:03got left in the game all the way up to
- 9:04GTA San Andreas. The only reason it
- 9:07wasn't in later games is because
- 9:09Rockstar completely changed engines. If
- 9:11they were still using the same base
- 9:12code, they'd probably be shooting the
- 9:13moon in GTA 6 still.
- 9:26And number 15, sleeping with the fishes
- 9:27in Vice City. It's a small one, but it
- 9:29remains one of the most memorable little
- 9:31secret details in the whole series, and
- 9:33something that a lot of players still
- 9:34vividly remember. The actual Easter egg
- 9:36itself is simple and morbid. Off the
- 9:39shore of the golf course in the downtown
- 9:41area side, you can look in the water and
- 9:43you see two dead guys in boxer shorts
- 9:45and cement shoes. Uh, do people even
- 9:47know what cement shoes are anymore? It
- 9:49used to be a pretty common element of
- 9:52gangsters in fiction. If you cross the
- 9:54mob, they'd put your feet in cement
- 9:55shoes and throw you in the East River.
- 9:57You saw this all over the place back in
- 9:59the day in cartoons and movies. Uh, but
- 10:01I'm not really sure how much trope play
- 10:04this one gets. I mean, it is a trope,
- 10:06technically, but the concept's pretty
- 10:08horrific. So, I can see why it came up
- 10:10so often. I don't know. Doesn't play any
- 10:12purpose in Vice City. It's just a
- 10:14gangster trope related to water. And you
- 10:16can actually pilot a boat in Vice City,
- 10:18so why not throw in some corpses with
- 10:19cement shoes? It's not that out of place
- 10:21in a GTA game.
- 10:23And number 14 is the UFO in GTA 5.
- 10:26Rockstar just has a thing for UFOs.
- 10:29Probably because, I mean, a lot like the
- 10:30Sasquatch in San Andreas, it was one of
- 10:32the most commonly repeated urban legends
- 10:35around in the game. So, I mean, so many
- 10:37people tried to find the secret UFO in
- 10:39San Andreas to no avail. But in GTA 5,
- 10:41it's finally here and it's everywhere.
- 10:43You You can't get rid of the damn thing.
- 10:45This time the UFO just appears all over
- 10:47the place. It's one It's There's one
- 10:48over Sandy Shores, slightly different
- 10:51one over Fort Zancudo, hovering above
- 10:53the the clouds. The most infamous one is
- 10:56uh found on top of Mount Chiliad at 3:00
- 10:58a.m. during stormy weather. So, the
- 10:59crashed UFO from GTA Online is mostly
- 11:02the same as the Chiliad one, but it
- 11:05doesn't have any FIB markers. And pretty
- 11:07much all of the other ones do. So, it
- 11:09might be the only authentic alien UFO.
- 11:13Actually seeing it's kind of a pain. You
- 11:14got to complete 600 resupply missions
- 11:16then trigger a new one between 9:00 p.m.
- 11:18and 11:00 p.m. which I'm not doing that.
- 11:21There's plenty of speculation about just
- 11:22what these things are supposed to be,
- 11:24who they serve, and why. But knowing
- 11:25Rockstar, none of it really matters.
- 11:27They just put them in because they
- 11:28thought it'd be funny.
- 11:39>> And number 13 is the many digs at
- 11:42Driver. Might sound crazy now, but back
- 11:44in the early 2000s, Driver was still
- 11:46considered to be serious competition
- 11:48[music] to GTA. There was also a bit of
- 11:50a rivalry between the studios. Rockstar
- 11:52was based in Edinburgh, the capital of
- 11:54Scotland, and Reflections Interactive,
- 11:56the makers of Driver, was based in
- 11:58Newcastle. So, there's friendly
- 12:00competitive spirit going on there as
- 12:01well. That's probably why Rockstar threw
- 12:03so many insults at the series. There was
- 12:05a professional rivalry going on, right?
- 12:07So, one of the most [music] cutting
- 12:08jokes at Driver's expense comes from
- 12:10Grand Theft Auto 3 in the mission
- 12:12Two-Face Tanner. [music] We're supposed
- 12:13to You're You're sent on a mission to
- 12:15eliminate a strangely animated
- 12:17undercover cop, which is a line directly
- 12:19from the game, and Tanner's the name of
- 12:21the protagonist from Driver. Like, I
- 12:23think it's the only fourth wall break in
- 12:25the game, and there's a reason for it.
- 12:26They're specifically making fun of the
- 12:28on-foot animations of Driver 2, which I
- 12:30mean, they were stiff and awkward. As a
- 12:32joke, they even made the GTA 3 Tanner
- 12:35walk in a real funky way. It's about as
- 12:36a direct shots fired as I've ever seen
- 12:39one game take at another game. Vice City
- 12:41had a more straightforward kind of
- 12:42insult. You're sent on a mission by Dr.
- 12:44Black to hunt down a series of GTA
- 12:46killer protagonists like Tanner from
- 12:48Driver, [music]
- 12:48some of the guys from The Getaway, and
- 12:50the protagonist of True Crime: Streets
- 12:52of LA.
- 13:02Like, actually, these guys are in the
- 13:04game, and [music] and you go kill them.
- 13:07The last and most direct of Rockstar's
- 13:09trifecta comes from San Andreas in the
- 13:11mission Mad Dog's Rhymes, where you
- 13:13sneak into Mad Dog's mansion to steal
- 13:15his song notes. While sneaking through
- 13:17the mansion, there's a guard playing
- 13:18video games who shouts,
- 13:20>> [snorts]
- 13:20>> [ __ ]
- 13:22How could Reflections mess up so bad?
- 13:23TANNER, YOU SUCK ASS.
- 13:26>> A statement obviously made in reference
- 13:28to Driver 3, which is a notorious bomb
- 13:30and a buggy mess of a game. Sure, they
- 13:32changed the name of the studio slightly,
- 13:34but obviously it doesn't matter. They're
- 13:36talking about Reflections. It's about as
- 13:37direct an insult as another studio could
- 13:40possibly be.
- 13:41>> [music]
- 13:41>> With some other game, you'd be walking
- 13:42on thin ice with that kind of thing, but
- 13:44it's San Andreas. Rockstar had nothing
- 13:45to prove and everything to gain.
- 13:48And number 12, the ghost of Mount Gordo
- 13:50in GTA V. They snuck in a little
- 13:52supernatural Red Dead energy with this
- 13:54Easter egg. How anyone managed to figure
- 13:56out how to find this intentionally, I
- 13:58don't know. It must have been one hell
- 14:00of a shock for the rare few who managed
- 14:02to stumble on it normally though. See,
- 14:03if you look in the eastern side of Mount
- 14:05Gordo between 11:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.,
- 14:08then you might get lucky and spot a
- 14:09ghost in the distance. If you try to
- 14:10approach it, it disappears, but if you
- 14:12view it from far away, you'll notice
- 14:13some eerie details like the word Jock
- 14:16written in blood where she's standing
- 14:18and a ghostly wail can be heard in the
- 14:19air.
- 14:29She's really just a flat image of JPEG
- 14:31sticking out with translucency applied,
- 14:34so it's not like inherently creepy, but
- 14:36it's it's done well. Certainly to the
- 14:38extent that it is creepy. In one of the
- 14:40many subtle touches in GTA V, you can
- 14:43actually find out more about this ghost.
- 14:44There's an article in the in-game
- 14:45internet which talks about Jolene
- 14:47Cranley Evans, the wife of Jock Cranley,
- 14:50the same name written under the ghost.
- 14:52It's implied from the article she was
- 14:53killed by her husband. So, it appears
- 14:55the ghost wants revenge or is at least
- 14:57present at the site of the death. It's
- 14:59like most GTA V's Easter eggs. It's
- 15:01mysterious, unnecessarily complex, and
- 15:04has a lot more backstory to it than you
- 15:05would initially assume. And number 11,
- 15:08apartment 3C in Vice City. During the
- 15:10PS2 era, it didn't take much to capture
- 15:12the imagination of gamers everywhere.
- 15:14All you needed was a mysterious unmarked
- 15:16apartment and few drops of blood and
- 15:18speculation could just last for years.
- 15:20Efficiency in games was the name of the
- 15:23game and there was rarely anything
- 15:25unnecessarily thrown into a game. So
- 15:27when people started finding this totally
- 15:29unmarked apartment in Vice City with a
- 15:30fully modeled interior and a blood blood
- 15:33soaked bathroom with a chainsaw pickup
- 15:35inside, nobody really knew what to make
- 15:37of it. Now, it was clearly a reference
- 15:39to Scarface. The apartments look almost
- 15:41exactly the same. The interior pretty
- 15:43similar as is, you know, the bloody
- 15:45chainsaw in the bathroom. What else
- 15:47could this have been for though? There's
- 15:49no way they created an entire interior
- 15:50just for an Easter egg, right? Many
- 15:52assumed it was part of a cut mission,
- 15:54possibly safe house that was cut from
- 15:55the game. Either way, Rockstar
- 15:57intentionally left the door of this
- 15:58place open so anyone can go in and
- 15:59explore and purposefully left the
- 16:01chainsaw in as a reference to one of the
- 16:03gnarliest moments in Scarface. And
- 16:05number 10 is the GTA 5 special edition
- 16:07map. The reason GTA 5 is such a
- 16:10lightning rod for urban legends, myths,
- 16:12fan theories, all that. They knew what
- 16:14they were doing. They wanted players to
- 16:16get into that conspiracy theory mindset
- 16:18and see symbols and meaning everywhere.
- 16:20Even when most of it was nonsense. And
- 16:21it all started before the game even
- 16:23began with the GTA 5 special edition
- 16:25which included a map of the entire San
- 16:27Andreas area. There's seemingly nothing
- 16:30about this map that stands out under
- 16:31normal light, but if you shine a black
- 16:33light on it, all kinds of secrets are
- 16:34revealed. This blew people's minds back
- 16:36in the day or remain the basis for so
- 16:38much speculation and theorizing around
- 16:40the whole Mount Chiliad mystery. Most of
- 16:42the hidden markers are mundane, but some
- 16:44of these spots contain spaceship parts.
- 16:46Others have references to the mysterious
- 16:48Infinity Killer and more. This blueprint
- 16:50isn't just the map of the game though.
- 16:52It's a stepping stone for all the
- 16:54secrets and Easter eggs in GTA 5. And
- 16:56while they never really managed to find
- 16:57all that much with the whole Mount
- 16:59Chiliad mystery blah blah blah kind of
- 17:01ended up being a whole big load of
- 17:03nothing. But there's no reason I'll
- 17:04believe that all these clues wouldn't
- 17:06lead somewhere. There was so much effort
- 17:08put into this stuff early on. It was
- 17:09only rational to assume there was some
- 17:11kind of payoff.
- 17:12And number nine is the swing set glitch
- 17:14in GTA 4. What's unusual about this one
- 17:17is that it both is and isn't an Easter
- 17:19egg. Originally, it was just a glitch
- 17:21that Rockstar [music] missed in testing.
- 17:23There was a bug on the swing sets in
- 17:24Liberty City. If you approach them a
- 17:26very specific way [music] while driving
- 17:27a car, you get flung potentially
- 17:29hundreds of yards into the air.
- 17:32Sometimes you get sent halfway across
- 17:34the map. Sometimes the car will get
- 17:35smashed instantly. I mean, it wasn't
- 17:37consistent, but it was very funny. Years
- 17:39and years later, the bug's still in the
- 17:41game. Rockstar could have removed it at
- 17:43any opportunity. It's been updated a
- 17:44lot, so it's not like they just dropped
- 17:46the game out there and never touched it
- 17:48again. It's a game that they tinkered
- 17:49with for years, but they never fixed the
- 17:51swing set glitch.
- 17:58It's a bug that eventually became an
- 17:59Easter egg purely because of how
- 18:01entertaining yet rare and difficult it
- 18:03is to pull it off. We know they could
- 18:05remove it because it's exactly what they
- 18:06did with GTA 5. There's a similar bug on
- 18:09the mansion gate that could send your
- 18:10car flying, but they fixed that. I guess
- 18:12the difference here is a lot more
- 18:13unlikely you'll trigger the swing set
- 18:15glitch unintentionally. You kind of had
- 18:16to go out of your way to drive a car
- 18:18into a swing set to get it to work, and
- 18:19it needs to be done in a really specific
- 18:21way. So, just driving around isn't going
- 18:23to cut it. I remember reading an article
- 18:25discussing this bug somewhere with
- 18:26Rockstar dev confirming it was
- 18:28unintentional. I swear to god, but even
- 18:30without having that to 100% confirm it,
- 18:32I think it's safe to assume it's it's a
- 18:34glitch. They know about it, and they
- 18:36left it in the game because it still
- 18:37works, obviously.
- 18:51And number eight is the Infinity Killer
- 18:53in GTA 5. One of the densest, most
- 18:55disturbing Easter eggs in GTA 5 is the
- 18:57whole Infinity Killer mystery. All
- 18:59around the more rural parts of the map,
- 19:01you can find clues related to some
- 19:02mysterious killer who's obsessed with
- 19:04the number eight and infinity, which is
- 19:06just the number eight turned sideways.
- 19:08You can find newspaper articles, there's
- 19:10a burned-out house in Cholla Springs.
- 19:12It's got eights and weird messages all
- 19:14over in the Star Sonora National Park.
- 19:16There's more clues with poems written
- 19:18about the eight victims referenced in
- 19:20the newspaper article. You can even find
- 19:22the location of the bodies is a map
- 19:23drawn on a wall inside the Bolingbroke
- 19:26Penitentiary, otherwise completely
- 19:28unutilized in the main game. If you
- 19:30explore Paleto Point on the northernmost
- 19:33part of the map, you can find bodies
- 19:34wrapped in plastic dumped in the water
- 19:36around the islands. It's unclear if the
- 19:38killer is really dead newspaper article
- 19:40implies or if he's still somewhere out
- 19:41there. Either way, the mystery ends
- 19:43there. There doesn't appear to be any
- 19:45kind of grand conclusion, but I mean, do
- 19:47you want to confront the killer? I mean,
- 19:49the killer might not even be alive, so
- 19:52uh the lack of closure kind of only adds
- 19:53to the mystery surrounding it, so
- 19:55whatever.
- 19:56At number seven is a secret message in
- 19:58GTA 3. Um might be an Easter egg that
- 20:00started it all. GTA 3 pretty light on
- 20:03Easter eggs, so it stands out. It's
- 20:05found near a parking lot at Bedford
- 20:07Point, and the only way to reach it is
- 20:08to drive a mid-size car up a narrow set
- 20:10of stairs and then climb onto the car
- 20:12and over a wall and into a section of
- 20:14the map you're clearly not meant to be
- 20:15in. There, you can read a message
- 20:17written on a wall that reads, "You
- 20:19weren't supposed to be able to get here,
- 20:20you know." It's about as simple as one
- 20:22of these things gets, just some text on
- 20:24a wall, but it's the thing that got the
- 20:25entire Easter egg ball rolling for this
- 20:27franchise. It's where secret hunting
- 20:30began as an obsession for these games.
- 20:32This one completely innocuous message
- 20:34inspired an entire generation of Easter
- 20:36egg hunters to search every inch of
- 20:38every GTA game to find any possible
- 20:40scrap of a secret. I mean, that might
- 20:42not actually be true, but this is where
- 20:43Rockstar's obsession with leaving wry
- 20:45little messages for players truly began.
- 20:48At number six, the dick building. This
- 20:50one's in Vice City, a legendary
- 20:52legendary Easter egg. Not just because
- 20:54of what it is, but because of what it
- 20:56started. Defacing something with a crude
- 20:58drawing of a dick and balls is as old as
- 21:00civilization itself, but Rockstar added
- 21:02one key innovation, and that is that it
- 21:04only appears at a very limited time
- 21:06during the day. How this one works is
- 21:08between 11:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. the
- 21:10lights on the Vice Point Langer building
- 21:13change so that the pattern of windows
- 21:14are lit up to look like a dick. For
- 21:17being on such a big prominent building,
- 21:19what's interesting here is how hard it
- 21:21is to notice. You have to be looking at
- 21:23it from the right angle to see the
- 21:24pattern and even then it's only visible
- 21:26for an in-game hour, which is a minute
- 21:28in real time. So, the people who managed
- 21:30to see it organically, it's kind of a
- 21:31magical sight even though it's so
- 21:33obviously dumb and juvenile. There's
- 21:35something really funny about seeing
- 21:37something that's hiding in plain sight
- 21:38for so long though.
- 21:40And number five is the opposition
- 21:41memorial in San Andreas. It was
- 21:43originally a playful jab. It looks
- 21:45pretty uh prescient now in 2025 though.
- 21:48In 2004 game makers were still trying to
- 21:50come out with the GTA killer. Everyone
- 21:52wanted their own take on the open-world
- 21:54crime game. There were many that tried,
- 21:55but of course San Andreas ended up
- 21:57blowing all the pretenders out of the
- 21:58water and Rockstar knew they had an
- 21:59instant classic on their hands. It
- 22:01wasn't going to be a game that resonated
- 22:02with the audience and get low review
- 22:04scores. They knew they had a bonafide
- 22:06hit on their hands. That's why you see
- 22:08the opposition memorial in San Fierro,
- 22:10which is full of tombstones that read
- 22:12RIP the opposition 1997 and 2004. The
- 22:15dates the year the original GTA came
- 22:17out. 2004 is of course San Andreas year.
- 22:20The idea here is that San Andreas killed
- 22:23the competition, but it was more of a
- 22:25metaphorical thing back then. Now in
- 22:272025 it's not so much. After the future
- 22:29Saints Row reboot failed to be, you
- 22:32know, anything good, everybody's staying
- 22:33pretty far away from trying to make
- 22:35their own GTA. The open-world crime
- 22:37genre is all but dead these days. GTA is
- 22:40the last one standing. Pure monopoly on
- 22:42their part at this point.
- 22:44And number four is the hatch in GTA V.
- 22:46Easy to forget how old GTA V is.
- 22:49Launched back in 2013, the tail end of
- 22:51the Xbox 360 PS3 era. The TV show Lost,
- 22:55which seems ancient at this point, was
- 22:56only a few years old by the time GTA V
- 22:59came [music] out. So, inserting a hatch
- 23:00Easter egg was still culturally
- 23:02relevant. A lot of open world games at
- 23:04the time referenced Lost. Just Cause 2,
- 23:06for example, went all in with this
- 23:08stuff. What made GTA 5's version so
- 23:10legendary is how it's so difficult to
- 23:12find and how it ultimately subverts your
- 23:14expectations in the most Rockstar way
- 23:15possible. The hatch itself is out in the
- 23:18ocean on the far east side of the map.
- 23:21Just getting to this spot is tedious,
- 23:23and spotting it's difficult cuz it's so
- 23:24deep underwater you can't normally get
- 23:26close to it. For players who choose to
- 23:28risk death and get close or they just
- 23:30cheat, that's the easier option. Then
- 23:32you can hear a series of clicks coming
- 23:33faintly from inside the door. It's a
- 23:35Morse code message, an Easter egg
- 23:37classic and staple of, you know,
- 23:39alternate reality games and stuff like
- 23:41that.
- 23:48Is it the next piece of the Mount
- 23:50Chiliad puzzle? Is this where we learn
- 23:52the location of the fabled jetpack? Is
- 23:53it another joke? Think you already know
- 23:55the answer. Yep, when translated the
- 23:57Morse code it says, [music] and I quote,
- 23:59"Hey, you never call. How do you fancy
- 24:01going bowling?" It's just a reference to
- 24:04Roman Bellic's phone calls from GTA 4.
- 24:07"My cousin!"
- 24:08And number three, Ronald Reagan target
- 24:10practice in GTA Vice City. An
- 24:12interesting one. It's one of the rare
- 24:13Easter eggs that actually got removed in
- 24:15the definitive edition. It's the
- 24:17legendary banned GTA Easter egg,
- 24:18probably honestly for a good reason. I
- 24:21have no idea what the story is on this
- 24:23thing in the original game, but if you
- 24:24went downtown to Ammu-Nation in Vice
- 24:26City, you know, the huge one that has
- 24:28Sam Houser, one of the creators of
- 24:30Rockstar running the counter. There's
- 24:32another freebie Easter egg for you. Sam
- 24:34Houser, you know. Anyway, if you stand
- 24:36on the counter, whip out a rocket
- 24:37launcher, and then look at the wall, you
- 24:39can see this bizarre image in the game
- 24:41that's a Photoshop of Ronald Reagan
- 24:43holding a gun with a picture of Mikhail
- 24:45Gorbachev with bullet holes on it.
- 24:46What's odd about this whole thing is
- 24:48that as far as I'm aware nobody at
- 24:49Rockstar ever commented on the image or
- 24:51explained exactly what it is. Probably
- 24:53for fear or liability, I'm guessing
- 24:55Rockstar didn't license those real world
- 24:58images for use in their video game And
- 24:59and that's probably why it was removed
- 25:01entirely [music] because they were using
- 25:03real world images and while it was
- 25:05photoshopped, those pictures probably
- 25:06belong to somebody. It's just weird
- 25:08seeing an actual real world picture of
- 25:10people in one of these games. They
- 25:11usually try to mask a little bit but
- 25:13here it's just those are the real the
- 25:14real guys. It's possible this was never
- 25:16meant to be seen in the first place. I
- 25:18mean, the method for seeing it's pretty
- 25:19obtuse but I don't know. It's possible
- 25:22it's maybe left in the game by accident.
- 25:24Who really knows at this point?
- 25:25And number two, see you in Miami from
- 25:28GTA 3. Outside the Francis International
- 25:30Airport, there's a billboard in GTA 3
- 25:33that advertised a trip to Miami and even
- 25:35back when the game first came out, I
- 25:36remember people speculating this was
- 25:38meant to be the next game. Keep in mind
- 25:39the original GTA didn't have just one
- 25:41city, it had three. [music] Liberty
- 25:43City, San Andreas and Vice City. The
- 25:45fact they called it Miami might have
- 25:46thrown people off the scent a bit but it
- 25:48was always considered a teaser for the
- 25:49next game. So begins Rockstar's long
- 25:52tradition of teasing the next GTA game
- 25:54using postcards and billboards. An
- 25:56interesting little time capsule of an
- 25:57Easter egg but what makes it truly
- 25:59legendary is when they came out with the
- 26:01definitive editions, most of the game's
- 26:03assets remained unchanged at least they
- 26:05were purposefully altered in some sort
- 26:07of, you know, just upscaling type way.
- 26:10But this one got a full upgrade. Instead
- 26:12of teasing Vice City, they were teasing
- 26:14GTA 6. Remember when the definitive
- 26:17editions came out, GTA 6 hadn't been
- 26:19fully revealed yet. People knew it was
- 26:21coming for sequel. The fact they put it
- 26:23in a GTA 3 in the same spot where Vice
- 26:25City was originally teased, that was a
- 26:27nice little full circle moment.
- 26:29And finally at number one is Bigfoot in
- 26:31GTA 5. Probably nothing more legendary
- 26:33in the GTA franchise than the hunt for
- 26:36the Sasquatch, right? It's got to be the
- 26:37biggest example of a fruitless Easter
- 26:39egg hunt in history because I mean, you
- 26:41know how it ends. Also, there's there's
- 26:43Mount Chiliad, maybe that's slightly
- 26:45bigger. Anyway, at least when it comes
- 26:47to Sasquatch, Rockstar did offer
- 26:48something to all the fans who obsessed
- 26:50over finding in San Andreas. You got a
- 26:52bonus mission to unlock after completing
- 26:54every other mission in the game. Uh this
- 26:55leads to the final hidden strangers and
- 26:57freaks mission, the last one where
- 26:59Franklin meets a Sasquatch hunter and
- 27:01helps him hunt down the last Sasquatch
- 27:03in existence. He ends up being a guy in
- 27:06a mask, but that doesn't mean the real
- 27:08Sasquatch isn't out there somewhere.
- 27:09>> It's just a [ __ ] mask.
- 27:12>> There's a lot of layers to this Easter
- 27:13egg. For one, the hunter references his
- 27:15great-granddaddy, who's probably the guy
- 27:17from the birth of the conservation
- 27:20movement mission from Red Dead
- 27:21Redemption: Undead Nightmare.
- 27:23>> The damn Sasquatch! The filthy thing was
- 27:25going to eat my DOG WHEN THIS GIRL
- 27:26HOLLERED OUT, AND I SHOT THE THING RIGHT
- 27:29THROUGH THE HEART.
- 27:30>> YOU KNOW, THE ONE WHERE YOU HUNT down
- 27:32the last Sasquatches.
- 27:33>> Shoot me, human.
- 27:35Shoot me.
- 27:36>> Oh, I will, you foul creature of the
- 27:38night.
- 27:39>> You'll be granting me peace.
- 27:41>> Why's that?
- 27:43Keep you from eating more babies?
- 27:45>> What in the name of all that's right are
- 27:48YOU TALKING ABOUT, HUMAN?
- 27:50>> THE guy in GTA V looks and sounds very
- 27:52similar to that guy.
- 27:53>> I could have sworn. THEY'RE CLEVER
- 27:55BASTARDS. SOME OF THEM WEAR ORANGE SO
- 27:57THAT PEOPLE will think they're hunters.
- 27:59Let's go this way.
- 27:59>> It was later revealed the hunter's name
- 28:01was Tanner, a reference to Tanner's
- 28:03Reach, the same place where you hunted
- 28:05Bigfoots in Undead Nightmare. Also,
- 28:08again, the name of the protagonist in
- 28:11Driver 3, John Tanner. Sure that has
- 28:13nothing to do with both of these guys,
- 28:15though, right? Anyways, he's voiced by
- 28:17the same guy who did the voice of the
- 28:19Squatch from Undead Nightmare. He has
- 28:20the same lines almost verbatim.
- 28:22>> Shoot me, human.
- 28:24>> I just did.
- 28:27>> Shoot me, human.
- 28:28Make it stop.
- 28:30>> I JUST SHOT YOUR ASS. IT STOPPED.
- 28:32>> I'm the last of my kind.
- 28:34>> Your evolution is a
- 28:36>> It gets even more complicated when you
- 28:38get into the whole peyote thing, where
- 28:40if you find every random peyote plant on
- 28:41the wilderness, you can actually become
- 28:43a Sasquatch, and this time it's the real
- 28:45deal. If you keep going with it, you
- 28:47eventually encounter the beast, which is
- 28:49just an extended Teen Wolf Easter egg,
- 28:51because of course that's how how this
- 28:53whole Sasquatch thing ends. Hundreds of
- 28:55thousands of hours have been dedicated
- 28:56following every possible lead and urban
- 28:58legend by a hardcore audience of
- 29:00dedicated fans, all ending it with a
- 29:03fist fight with Teen Wolf, a reference
- 29:05that would have been outdated in 1995,
- 29:07you know, a long time ago, let alone
- 29:102025. Now, I mean if that's not the
- 29:13ultimate Rockstar conclusion to an
- 29:14Easter egg, I don't know what is. And
- 29:16that's all for today. Leave us a
