Full transcript
- 0:00It feels so amazing right now because I
- 0:03get to see you and it's been too long.
- 0:05Two chains.
- 0:06>> Wow.
- 0:07>> My long lost friend.
- 0:08>> That's right. And you know what? I'm a
- 0:10little upset with you. I feel like
- 0:11you've left us way too long.
- 0:13>> That's That's cap.
- 0:14>> Come on.
- 0:15>> No. You know, you like you just I
- 0:18now in today,
- 0:22>> you know, atmosphere, I feel like I need
- 0:24a reason to like
- 0:26>> get out that
- 0:27>> pop out sometimes. Like I just don't
- 0:28need to just be coming up here like I
- 0:30don't work up here. You know what I'm
- 0:31saying? Oh my god.
- 0:32>> But now that I have a project and I'm
- 0:34promoting and
- 0:36>> trying to bring awareness to some
- 0:38things. I feel like I do need to
- 0:39>> That's right.
- 0:40>> to get back out here. We were just
- 0:42talking about your evolution before you
- 0:44came and I am proud of you and I love
- 0:46this and like I feel like we've all
- 0:47grown with you and you are
- 0:49>> you know even with your new album
- 0:51Players Only Live Once I feel like you
- 0:53hear the maturity the evolution and I
- 0:56would hope that would happen
- 0:58>> after all these years. Can you imagine
- 1:00if you were still like stuck back then?
- 1:03Which, hey, no shade to anyone who might
- 1:05be in that phase. But it's nice to see
- 1:08that cuz it feels like we get to grow
- 1:10with you.
- 1:11>> Yeah. I I believe in prosperity and
- 1:15turning the page and this project
- 1:19embodies
- 1:20>> a lot of growth and evolution.
- 1:23Um, it talks about the journey. It still
- 1:25has this
- 1:26um boisterous moments that that rap,
- 1:29>> right?
- 1:30>> You know, lives lives on and lives by.
- 1:32But but the most part, man, I have
- 1:36>> great great production by Static
- 1:37Selector who did the whole project. I
- 1:40went out to the West Coast and sat down
- 1:42with 1500 or nothing with like Rance and
- 1:45Mars and had them play some live
- 1:46instruments on top of that.
- 1:48>> So musically and sonically wise, it's
- 1:51just eargasm, you know. Mhm.
- 1:53>> And then on a lyrical aspect, this is
- 1:55like me and some of the features that I
- 1:57put on some of these records is just
- 2:00>> it's just high levels is expensive taste
- 2:03to say the least.
- 2:04>> I mean, makes sense. Absolutely. High
- 2:07taste. Speaking of your team has been
- 2:10very, you know, extra protective over
- 2:14the details about your album. How many
- 2:17songs will be on the album? Because it
- 2:19doesn't come out until December 4th. So,
- 2:21we're getting ready for the holidays.
- 2:22December 4th, we're going to get this
- 2:24new Two Chains project. But
- 2:27>> how many songs are going to be on the
- 2:28album?
- 2:29>> It's 18 songs.
- 2:31>> 18.
- 2:31>> That's a lot.
- 2:32>> 18 songs. I have features from Mary J.
- 2:37Bl.
- 2:38>> Ti.
- 2:40>> I have a song with Macy Graham, Westside
- 2:42Gun. That's one of my favorites. I have
- 2:45a song with Ron Eley and the Dream.
- 2:49I have a song with Big Sean.
- 2:51>> Okay.
- 2:51>> So, I got I got some heavy hitters on
- 2:53there and it's all like in the right
- 2:54place. It's not,
- 2:56>> you know, it may sound like it's
- 2:58oversaturated, but these voices or
- 3:00instruments that I feel are in the right
- 3:02slots.
- 3:03>> Is it completely done? The album at this
- 3:04point?
- 3:05>> Yeah, it's turned in.
- 3:06>> Oh, it's done.
- 3:07>> Yeah, it's in the clouds. [sighs]
- 3:10>> How do you feel now? Listen, I mean
- 3:12obviously we know your success, your the
- 3:14career is, you know,
- 3:17>> what a blessing.
- 3:18>> Yes.
- 3:18>> Right.
- 3:19>> Yes.
- 3:19>> But do you still get excited for these
- 3:21moments? I do.
- 3:22>> Do you? I do.
- 3:23>> Okay. Yeah.
- 3:24>> I just had to perform some of the
- 3:26records for what platform I do? Vivo
- 3:30this morning.
- 3:31>> Uhhuh. [snorts]
- 3:32>> And I just when I got through per I
- 3:34performed a record called Highlight Real
- 3:36that's on my project and I performed a
- 3:37song called Kenmore. And when I got
- 3:41When I finished performing highlight
- 3:43reel, I I legit wanted to just run down
- 3:45the street.
- 3:46>> Oh my, that makes me so happy.
- 3:49>> I was that excited. I was geeked. I was
- 3:51that my adrenaline was like, I'm like,
- 3:54[laughter]
- 3:55you know, [snorts]
- 3:56>> you know what? I love that you still
- 3:58love this. You love the game. You love
- 4:01making music. Was there ever a time in
- 4:04your extremely successful career that
- 4:06you wanted to walk away from making
- 4:08music?
- 4:08>> Never. really
- 4:10>> no I have really good ideas still and I
- 4:12feel like ideas is one of the highest
- 4:15forms of currency
- 4:17>> and so it's like I won't be brain dead I
- 4:20guess if you got brain dead I had no
- 4:21inspo no selfm motivation I can see you
- 4:23like want to take the that road
- 4:26>> but for me it's not I've been in New
- 4:28York I don't know how many days it's two
- 4:30or three days but as long as I've been
- 4:32in New York I got more songs than that
- 4:34because I've been in the studio
- 4:35recording since I've been here too so I
- 4:37probably got four or five songs to go
- 4:38along with me being here. So I ain't
- 4:40just up here wasting my precious time
- 4:43and oxygen.
- 4:44>> Yeah. Well, I was going to say, what
- 4:45inspires you to still make music?
- 4:47>> I'm my ideas.
- 4:48>> Just your idea
- 4:50are currency. If you look at it like
- 4:52that, then you just like be rich with
- 4:53all this like stuff that's that you just
- 4:56got to get out and bring to fruition. So
- 4:58whether that be a lyric or a song or
- 5:02whatever it may be, a product, whatever
- 5:05it may be, that's what is my motivation.
- 5:07I just got these like light bulbs and be
- 5:10like, "Damn, that [ __ ] fresh."
- 5:11>> What was the last light bulb that you
- 5:13got and it turned into something crazy?
- 5:18>> I mean, other than everything, but like
- 5:20something something that you're just
- 5:21like, man, I didn't think it was going
- 5:23to like turn into it cuz it was like
- 5:25such an out there idea,
- 5:27>> but it really did turn. They I just I I
- 5:29mean I can't think that some of the
- 5:30ideas haven't been brought to fruition
- 5:32yet. So I don't want to let the cat out
- 5:33the bag. But for the most part
- 5:35>> most of the stuff that you that you see
- 5:38like most of the stuff you see even like
- 5:39if I think about like cuz I um I was
- 5:42just with somebody else and they was
- 5:43talking about pretty girls like trap
- 5:44music. Like that whole thing there was
- 5:46like an idea I had in my head
- 5:48>> with the pretty girls wanting like how
- 5:51how the prettier girls would want like
- 5:53the opposite that they kind of want a
- 5:54hustle a street a street person and then
- 5:57you know having it pink
- 5:59>> and having a house all that was my
- 6:01everyone all that was my idea. So I but
- 6:03I I I saw it in my head before you guys
- 6:06saw it.
- 6:07>> Sure.
- 6:07>> And so
- 6:09>> that's just an example that I feel like
- 6:10people can gravitate they already know
- 6:13what I'm talking about as far as that
- 6:14project. So that's that could be one in
- 6:17what what I explained like ideas being
- 6:19currency. I think that was a good idea
- 6:21concept conceptually with the title and
- 6:24then if you nail it I don't always nail
- 6:25it right. I don't always nail it. I can
- 6:27tell you that.
- 6:28>> But we learn from those moments.
- 6:29>> Yeah. But when you do nail it and
- 6:31everything else just the success kind of
- 6:33follows a little bit easier in my
- 6:35personal perspective.
- 6:37>> Speaking of static, you know this
- 6:39connection happened. He's originally
- 6:41from Boston. I know he's been in New
- 6:42York for a very long time. You're from
- 6:44Atlanta. Whose idea was it to work
- 6:46together and why was that important for
- 6:49you?
- 6:49>> It was my idea. We've been working on
- 6:51this project for a long time. We have a
- 6:53great rapport. We were doing a song here
- 6:55song that just really stacking up the
- 6:58samples
- 7:00>> to one day have to go through this
- 7:01sample clearance process. And if you
- 7:03know, you know.
- 7:04>> Like a nightmare.
- 7:04>> If you know, you know.
- 7:06>> But you know, ultimately, I put out a
- 7:08project. Um, my last project I put out
- 7:11was called Life is Beautiful with
- 7:12Alchemist and Larry June. And you know,
- 7:15I received a lot of rave reviews on
- 7:18that, but I was already confident
- 7:20>> in the output that I put on the project.
- 7:23>> And I from that idea, I said, I want to
- 7:26do a project, just one producer.
- 7:29>> Now, that could be with anybody because
- 7:31I'm from Atlanta. We got
- 7:33>> Oh, yeah.
- 7:33>> the best producers in the world in
- 7:34Atlanta.
- 7:36>> But I just want to do something
- 7:36different for me and my fan base. And
- 7:38you know, I feel like this is some of
- 7:41what the game has been missing.
- 7:44>> And do you what do you think people are
- 7:45going to take away after they listen to
- 7:47your album? Or what are you hoping they
- 7:49will take away?
- 7:50>> Well, I hope they take take away a sense
- 7:52of um
- 7:55a sense of like self, you know what I'm
- 7:58saying? a reflection to be able to be
- 8:00like, yo, this change 10th album,
- 8:02>> you know,
- 8:04>> and just about
- 8:07extending your own personal
- 8:10expectations.
- 8:11>> That's what this project is. It just
- 8:13highlights,
- 8:15>> you know what I'm saying? Me as the man
- 8:17I am now, far as a family man,
- 8:19businessman, you know, we going to talk
- 8:21about the struggles, but we going to
- 8:23highlight some of those celebrations and
- 8:25some of those wins as well. So, the
- 8:27project embodies all of those emotions.
- 8:30>> The title, Players Only Live Once. Why
- 8:33this title? What does it mean for you?
- 8:35>> Well, like coming from Atlanta, you
- 8:37know, during the late 90s and 90s
- 8:38period, we were all rocking polo. And
- 8:40then the acronym for polo was Players
- 8:42Only Live Once. [laughter] And so, the
- 8:45title was nostalgic and something that I
- 8:47felt like I can add to this landscape,
- 8:49this piece of art that I'm doing, it has
- 8:50a lot of nostalgic like sounds and
- 8:53samples in it. And so,
- 8:56um, the details is in the art piece, not
- 8:58so much the title. So, once you get the
- 9:01music, you'll be able to, I think,
- 9:04attach a lot of what you hear to the
- 9:06title, if that makes sense.
- 9:07>> Oh, absolutely. The song, A Week in
- 9:09Paris, I'm assuming, is based off of a
- 9:12real experience of you in Paris for a
- 9:15week.
- 9:15>> Yes. Yes. It drops tonight. You should
- 9:18have it now, though. Now,
- 9:19>> I mean, they've been real. They've been
- 9:21real.
- 9:21>> I think you should have it now. Now, we
- 9:23only got Pops. Well, that's cuz
- 9:25>> she looking like I ain't got it. I need
- 9:27you to tell whoever is out there.
- 9:28>> Tell whoever it is
- 9:29>> that y'all need the record. Like,
- 9:31>> I want to hear it. And so, we were like,
- 9:33"Can we please hear it?" But I get it
- 9:35cuz you know what? Leaky music.
- 9:37>> No, I don't. No, we No, we're not doing
- 9:39that. [laughter]
- 9:41>> It's me.
- 9:42>> Yeah, we're not doing Yeah. Yeah. This
- 9:44is not that. I'm not like this, you
- 9:45know? I'm me, y'all.
- 9:47>> Let's see if we can get it, though, cuz
- 9:48I do want y'all to hear it.
- 9:49>> I want I not just hear it. I want you to
- 9:51to play it. Yeah. A week in Paris. What
- 9:54is this song? Why? And like what
- 9:56happened in Paris that made you
- 9:58>> I was at fashion week and and I was
- 10:00having it on every day and enjoying
- 10:02myself and hanging out and going to
- 10:03different
- 10:04>> cafes and eating different.
- 10:06>> Oh, did you
- 10:08>> trying to find different food to eat?
- 10:09Cuz that's the thing when you go out the
- 10:10country, you're trying to find something
- 10:12that your stomach would agree with,
- 10:14>> right? [laughter]
- 10:16>> And sometime it take two or three days
- 10:17for that. So
- 10:20>> it gets rough sometimes. just going to
- 10:22eat this hotel food. You be eating
- 10:23breakfast all day like 6:00. Y' ain't
- 10:25got no eggs. [laughter]
- 10:26No. Like, damn. Chicken fingers and some
- 10:29stuff you just can't mess up. Fries.
- 10:31>> Fries is
- 10:32>> French toast.
- 10:33>> Fries the goto.
- 10:35>> Fries. You some some some some countries
- 10:38you just can't mess this up. You just
- 10:40>> even when it comes to water, like
- 10:41bottled water, it's like it's, you know,
- 10:43I mean,
- 10:43>> no, no, no. It is. You have to people
- 10:46people people who haven't traveled
- 10:48outside the country. It's a true
- 10:49challenge because I've seen people like,
- 10:50"Oh, there's a KFC."
- 10:52>> Well,
- 10:53>> or McDonald's. And it's just like it's
- 10:55not the same.
- 10:56>> You know, their taste buds don't
- 10:58actually
- 10:59>> Yes.
- 10:59>> know how to like they don't know how to
- 11:01relate to that overseas. You know what
- 11:03I'm saying? So,
- 11:04>> and your stomach may have a little bit
- 11:05of a challenge.
- 11:06>> Yeah, man.
- 11:07>> Wait. For in your career, do you
- 11:09remember the first like trip you took
- 11:11out of the country? Like your very first
- 11:14trip, was it on a I'm assuming maybe
- 11:17tour or invited somewhere?
- 11:19>> Oh man. Many years ago.
- 11:23Oh my god. I remember I I remember a
- 11:27I remember a trip I went on many Let me
- 11:30see.
- 11:32>> And it was lifechanging. You're like,
- 11:33"Wow,
- 11:35I love it. I love traveling."
- 11:38you know, going [sighs and gasps] I've
- 11:40been going in Paris, you know, is one of
- 11:43the places going going to Africa, you
- 11:45know, London, some of those places,
- 11:47>> you know, I'm not even sure right now at
- 11:49this point which one I went to first,
- 11:51but just knowing that you're in another
- 11:53time zone,
- 11:55>> another country around
- 11:58>> people who are raised raised totally
- 12:02differently from the way that you were
- 12:04raised is always like it's always like a
- 12:06thing for me. is always something that I
- 12:08try to it's hard like hard for me to
- 12:10wrap my head around some of those
- 12:11concepts. You know what I'm saying?
- 12:13>> And then you'll see somebody you be like
- 12:15and they'll look just like you. You know
- 12:17what I mean? But they just
- 12:19>> different world.
- 12:20>> Yeah. Be from a different [snorts]
- 12:21world.
- 12:22>> And then does it surprise you when
- 12:23they're singing along and they're
- 12:25rapping along?
- 12:25>> It used to. But I get that that music is
- 12:27a universal language. So I get it. Yeah.
- 12:29You don't have to like I get it. And
- 12:30it's the same thing with with us like a
- 12:32lot of people like with Afro beats or
- 12:35whatever. there certain songs that
- 12:36pierce us that we're able to when the
- 12:39artists come over here and they're like,
- 12:40"Damn, these people are singing my stuff
- 12:42word for word." So, I think it it it
- 12:44goes both ends.
- 12:45>> Absolutely. That that's the power of
- 12:46music and really I was going to go to
- 12:50this part, you know, the power of music
- 12:52and what it can like bring out of us
- 12:53like especially when I'm listening to
- 12:54your song Pops.
- 12:57>> Yeah, that's a deep one.
- 12:59>> That's why I put the song last. I
- 13:00couldn't put it before any other song
- 13:02because it just like I I I was when I
- 13:04was doing the
- 13:06>> [sighs]
- 13:06>> I was trying to put this thing in
- 13:10in sequence. It was just like I could
- 13:12not put a song after the pops cuz it's
- 13:15like
- 13:16>> [ __ ] wiping their tears and
- 13:18stuff. Like I have real friends cry when
- 13:20I play that record. So
- 13:21>> she did earlier today.
- 13:22>> Yeah.
- 13:23>> And then I was like don't make I can't
- 13:24do this cuz I got all this makeup and
- 13:26fake lashes on right now. I was like 2
- 13:28we can't do this. But that's my
- 13:30emotional that's my most emotional and
- 13:32one of my
- 13:33>> it was this I explained that record as
- 13:35my one of my most easiest
- 13:38>> yet hardest records to write in my whole
- 13:42life.
- 13:43>> Did you cry making it?
- 13:46>> No.
- 13:47>> Really?
- 13:49>> But listen to it. I get certain like
- 13:50chill bumps and feelings and stuff like
- 13:52that. I probably hadn't listened to it
- 13:53over 10 times. It's been and it's been
- 13:55recorded. It's like I got I just it's
- 13:58like
- 14:00I don't know. I just closed it up,
- 14:02>> put a lock on.
- 14:03>> It's so emotional. Obviously, it's about
- 14:05your father who's no longer here. Rest,
- 14:08you know, his soul
- 14:09>> and just hearing you talk about your
- 14:11relationship with him, what you learn
- 14:12from him. And of course, like it's
- 14:14complex as most relationships are.
- 14:17>> We don't go through it or have to go
- 14:18through it or will go through it.
- 14:22Now after it and just where you're at
- 14:25today, do you have a different
- 14:27appreciation for your father that maybe
- 14:29you didn't really appreciate when he was
- 14:32here?
- 14:32>> No, actually I'm I'm very jealous of
- 14:34people who have their fathers.
- 14:36>> Yeah. If I see people like especially
- 14:38like men,
- 14:40>> not women, but if I see men men like
- 14:42like my a if they around my age do what
- 14:46I do
- 14:47>> and they bring their father around,
- 14:50>> I'd be like, damn, man. [clears throat]
- 14:52Y'all look like y'all having fun. Y'all
- 14:54like Cuz I I would definitely be like
- 14:55that with my father. So I know like I
- 14:59saw a lot of a lot of artists have been
- 15:00around me or been to my establishments
- 15:03and and and brought their father and I
- 15:06be like damn because I own a strip club.
- 15:08I would I
- 15:09>> that's one of the things I would like to
- 15:10do with my pops is
- 15:13we went to the strip club when he was
- 15:14here but like it wasn't mine. But God
- 15:17God doesn't make mistakes cuz if this
- 15:19was mine and this man would be alive
- 15:20ain't no telling what the hell he he
- 15:22would [laughter] have me what kind of
- 15:23trouble I would be in. So now that I'm
- 15:25thinking about that, but just for the
- 15:26most part, man, you just be wishing
- 15:30cuz you know, I became my dad was on
- 15:33this little oxygen breathing thing. I
- 15:37played my first album for him when he
- 15:39was on this little breathing [ __ ] I was
- 15:40like, I just put it on this um
- 15:44put these headphones on on him. It was
- 15:46actually it was actually one of my
- 15:49friends idea. He was like, "Man, you
- 15:50ought to just play the album for him." M
- 15:52>> it was actually Chris idea
- 15:55>> and then I did and I don't you know I
- 15:59don't know if you heard or not and then
- 16:00you know but that was like that was my
- 16:02first album I'm on album 10 or how much
- 16:04you done missed you dig what I'm saying
- 16:07>> I can't even tell you what first country
- 16:09I went I'm on my third passport I'm
- 16:11sitting up here trying to think was it
- 16:12Africa was I don't know what you know
- 16:14just had just a crazy run
- 16:17>> you know I mean I know he's with me
- 16:19spiritually but like just like being
- 16:21right here would be be be cool.
- 16:24>> In your memoir, I know you you talked
- 16:26about how your father was your best
- 16:27friend and you know again like the it's
- 16:30complex like all of us, but what do you
- 16:32understand about your father now that
- 16:34maybe you didn't understand when he was
- 16:35here?
- 16:39>> Had a couple bad breaks
- 16:41>> and been able to learn from those
- 16:44mistakes. I've been able to learn from
- 16:45that like how life can just
- 16:50it can it can just go for a turn. You
- 16:52know what I mean? Life is just
- 16:56life is life is life is super duper
- 16:58precious. So you can
- 17:00the unexpected can happen and it can
- 17:02change your whole you know life man. And
- 17:05I mean it can be less than you know less
- 17:08than a minute. Think about 60 seconds
- 17:10changing
- 17:11your whole entire life, you know?
- 17:15>> So, I'm someone that's conscious of
- 17:16that. I try to think twice before I make
- 17:18one decision. But me, too, man. The the
- 17:21human side of me, I done dropped the
- 17:22ball a couple times. I made some
- 17:24mistakes.
- 17:25I pray they don't hunt me.
- 17:28>> You know what I'm saying? I pray like
- 17:29that. But I'm I am conscious of
- 17:3260 seconds changing your whole life. I
- 17:34am conscious of that.
- 17:36What would you say has been your biggest
- 17:39mistake in all of your businesses?
- 17:40Because you're a businessman. Yes, we
- 17:42know your music and all these things,
- 17:43but I mean, you have a laundry list of
- 17:46businesses.
- 17:46>> Biggest mistake in business is trusting
- 17:48people, period. That's just it. You
- 17:50trust people. It's going to bite your
- 17:52ass. Trust people just be
- 17:54>> weird.
- 17:55>> People be [ __ ] up, man. You know, and
- 17:57it's just like Yeah. It's just like, you
- 17:59know, and that's what it is. It be it's
- 18:01trust, man. You know, it's really trust
- 18:04cuz
- 18:06I'm not in a position to say like I
- 18:07wouldn't do this if I was in certain
- 18:08people position, but like just taking
- 18:11advantage of people is like it's at an
- 18:13alltime high right now.
- 18:14>> Oh, absolutely. I was going to ask you
- 18:17has that happened to you and like what
- 18:20was the loss looking like? I'm assuming
- 18:22they took money.
- 18:22>> Yeah, I've lost millions.
- 18:23>> Millions?
- 18:24>> Yeah, I lost millions. Yeah, I've lost
- 18:27millions. I've lost millions.
- 18:28>> Hurts right now.
- 18:29>> I've lost millions. I invested in um
- 18:32Pineapple Express is a dispensary in
- 18:35California. I would like to always bring
- 18:37attention to their scam and sh
- 18:40>> But it all goes in trust. That's all
- 18:42like the same theme of trusting and like
- 18:45if you make like let's say a mistake
- 18:47like that because you are very
- 18:48successful when it comes to investing
- 18:50like right.
- 18:51>> Yeah. I've had some wins, but I like to
- 18:53let let people know I have some cuz
- 18:55sometime I think you know especially in
- 18:56interviews and period it's like IG you
- 18:58be like showing the highlights. So I
- 19:01think it's my it's really my duty too to
- 19:03let people know I've taken losses too.
- 19:05Like of course you can see some of the
- 19:06wins and some of the
- 19:07>> the runs I've had with Esco and even
- 19:10with Candyland even with the pizza spot
- 19:12some of these like ESCO has been open
- 19:13for 10 years. It was once upon a time
- 19:15where the passive income that that was
- 19:17kicking out was was taking care of my
- 19:21lifestyle in a whole another state,
- 19:23[gasps]
- 19:23>> you know. So, it was just like certain
- 19:25things that I've been a part of been
- 19:26some super duper great runs and still
- 19:28still is. But I have had those things
- 19:31where you meet somebody and they say the
- 19:33right thing or
- 19:35>> you know put on a suit. You know, you
- 19:36got to watch them [ __ ] in suits.
- 19:38That'd be the cap.
- 19:39>> They're the ones.
- 19:40>> [ __ ] put a suit on.
- 19:41>> That's it. Don't trust them. They say
- 19:43you anything, boy.
- 19:45>> Immediately, don't try.
- 19:46>> Put a suit on, boy. [laughter] I got
- 19:48this one story before I get out of here.
- 19:50Get out of here, man.
- 19:52>> My homeboy, he know who he is, right? He
- 19:54used to be like, he's doing good. He
- 19:56used to like be a driver. Then he
- 19:58started running his own fleet. That's
- 20:00how he'll know exactly what I'm talking
- 20:01about. [laughter] And we had, it's a
- 20:04Super Bowl in LA. You know what I'm
- 20:05saying? Me, him, and my security. You
- 20:07know what I'm saying? And man, the man
- 20:09had on a suit, had the fresh had the
- 20:12fresh ball head. You know what I'm
- 20:13saying?
- 20:15Do you know this man snuck in the Super
- 20:20Bowl?
- 20:21That's when I knew the suit cap was the
- 20:24highest for this man walked in with me
- 20:28[laughter] without a ticket
- 20:30>> like he belong. He I got him. I'm going
- 20:32to make sure he get to he he capped his
- 20:35way all the way. And when the first
- 20:37quarter was over, dog, this is no cap,
- 20:40Nessa, the man like eight rows in front
- 20:43of me. I almost want to tell ON THE MAN.
- 20:45[laughter] I'M LIKE, HELL NO. WHAT YOU
- 20:47DOING DOWN THERE?
- 20:48>> OH MY.
- 20:49>> HE DOWN HIM. He look at me like, boy,
- 20:50I'm in this [ __ ] [laughter] So, if you
- 20:53don't learn nothing from this show,
- 20:54learn that players only live once. It's
- 20:56something that you need to have.
- 20:58>> That's right.
- 20:58>> And two, watch the suits.
- 21:00>> And watch the suits.
- 21:01>> Watch the suits, [laughter] man. Watch
- 21:03the suits.
- 21:04>> Okay, really quick. when we think about
- 21:06your incredible like look of course the
- 21:08legacy the incredible journey but I want
- 21:10to talk about that 2011 through 2013 run
- 21:13cuz I felt like it was just two chains
- 21:15on repeat all day every day on every
- 21:17single radio station it was all on
- 21:19rotation right spend it mercy bees in a
- 21:22trap no lie birthday song I'm different
- 21:25problems I those are just some out of
- 21:28all of those songs that I listed what
- 21:31would you say is your favorite studio
- 21:33session
- 21:35When Be's in a trap, she needed it back
- 21:37like
- 21:39>> ASAP. But I I had a studio on my tour
- 21:42bus, so I was like, "All right, when I
- 21:43get done with this show, I'm going to do
- 21:44that." No lie. That was interesting. I
- 21:47told Drake that I had a song for him,
- 21:50>> but I didn't. But I I had literally
- 21:53seen, I got something for you. Like send
- 21:55it to him like, "Oh,
- 21:57all right. Bet." I'm like, "Okay, got
- 22:00you." I go, I run straight to the bus.
- 22:02Oh, we got to come up with something
- 22:03right now. We And [laughter] I came up
- 22:05with it.
- 22:06>> I smoking on that gas. I did. Yeah. So,
- 22:09yeah, I had I have some pretty cool
- 22:12studio experiences being in the studio
- 22:14while for real May Fez is watching. I
- 22:16enjoyed
- 22:18>> that. You know, anytime I'm working with
- 22:20like Yay. It's It's a great experience.
- 22:23>> Wayne is one of my favorite artists to
- 22:26work with
- 22:27>> ever of all time. Like for you. What
- 22:30what is it with the chemistry? Like what
- 22:32is
- 22:33>> you know from your experience? How would
- 22:35you describe you know that
- 22:39>> experience something that we don't know
- 22:41about Wayne? You know what I mean? Cuz
- 22:43like he seems like this it's Wayne
- 22:46>> and we only know what we know. But for
- 22:48you there's a chemistry. What is it
- 22:50about him that makes it so special
- 22:53and something we don't know? man, we've
- 22:55known each other, you know, 20 years.
- 22:57Just understanding each other as um
- 22:59human beings first before before artist,
- 23:02you know,
- 23:03>> um he's my real friend, like real
- 23:05brother, you know, so he my best man in
- 23:07my wedding, you know, he don't even do
- 23:08stuff like that, you know.
- 23:10and I'll do anything for him and just
- 23:13what he has done for me and not even
- 23:15hinted at or noticed or maybe even
- 23:19care which is like have changed the
- 23:21trajectory of like
- 23:23my family and quality of like life
- 23:26around you know what I mean?
- 23:27>> Wow.
- 23:27>> With the stuff that we've done. Yeah. So
- 23:30I just always be appreciative of him and
- 23:32always kind of
- 23:34>> give him the high praise I feel like he
- 23:36deserve. But he's like a friend of mine.
- 23:37So I do understand what people be like
- 23:39cuz it's a lot you people don't see or
- 23:42don't know about him or whatever. But
- 23:44>> that's not my place to discuss. It's
- 23:46just my place to express,
- 23:48you know, um just, you know, how much I
- 23:52appreciate just my love and admiration
- 23:54for the for the guy. Mhm. And you know,
- 23:57it's I'm always so curious because
- 24:00the chemistry obviously there, but
- 24:02hearing that you guys are real friends,
- 24:03it all makes sense and we get to see it
- 24:05and we get to enjoy what comes out of
- 24:07it. But that's a it's a beautiful thing,
- 24:09especially in this industry. We know
- 24:11>> we know there's a lot of suit energy.
- 24:13I'll say
- 24:15>> there's a lot of suit energy.
- 24:16>> You're right. That's [laughter] you're
- 24:17right.
- 24:17>> That's a lot. When you when you look
- 24:19back at your entire career and just your
- 24:21journey, what do you hope people
- 24:23understand about you that they, you
- 24:25know, wouldn't necessarily understand
- 24:27from a song or your entire catalog?
- 24:30>> What they don't understand about me?
- 24:31>> Yeah.
- 24:32>> Um,
- 24:34I'm an only child. I had to figure out a
- 24:35lot of this stuff on my own. Like no big
- 24:37brother or nothing, you know.
- 24:40>> Um, nature versus nurture definitely
- 24:42applies to me because I'm like this I'm
- 24:45the only child. me and my mom super
- 24:47close, but I was I was outside a lot.
- 24:49>> I was outside a lot. Um
- 24:54uh I I
- 24:57I
- 25:00you know,
- 25:02I went to juvenile at 15, but I have a
- 25:04college degree. So, it's like that
- 25:07spectrum alone, I think,
- 25:09>> can kind of sum up like my whole life
- 25:13like it's all about like getting back
- 25:15up. Mhm.
- 25:16>> You know what I'm saying?
- 25:18>> Crawling, walking, run that whole
- 25:20flying,
- 25:21>> you know? So, I think this is like I've
- 25:23been trying to be pretty transparent. Of
- 25:25course, I'm private and don't want
- 25:27everybody to know all my business. I
- 25:28won't be like streaming anytime soon or
- 25:31anything.
- 25:31>> Well, but your podcast with your son,
- 25:33which is great by the way, I was
- 25:34surprised initially
- 25:37when you know you launched it. I was
- 25:39like, "Wow." Because you are so private.
- 25:41>> Yeah. But that's me trying to show Mhm.
- 25:46>> The relationship of a black man with his
- 25:49son in today's
- 25:52society and atmosphere is me trying to
- 25:56show what I actually feel is a lack of,
- 25:59you know, and these are conversations
- 26:02and then I feel like Halo is mature
- 26:04enough and just somebody that at the end
- 26:08of the day I was just tired of bragging
- 26:09on him to other people. I'm like, "Let
- 26:10me just make a platform. We can just
- 26:12talk and people can see it and decipher
- 26:14it for themselves." And he started doing
- 26:15the podcast at 5. He's 11 now.
- 26:17>> Yeah.
- 26:18>> And you know, somebody was like, "Man,"
- 26:22somebody came on the show. They like,
- 26:23"Man, I wish I'd have been on camera
- 26:24with him when you was six." He was like,
- 26:25"Bro, [laughter]
- 26:27I ain't six no more. Stop saying that."
- 26:29You know what I'm saying? But I'm like,
- 26:31"Bro, shut up." You know what I'm
- 26:32saying? I'm setting you up for this NIA.
- 26:34I'm setting his life up. Like, for real.
- 26:36>> Just doing the ultimate. You going to be
- 26:37going you hooping.
- 26:39>> Yeah. Yeah,
- 26:39>> you have a your own media platform. You
- 26:42got shoes, you got cologne, you got
- 26:46charisma, you got confidence, and you
- 26:48got me and you got God. So, that's the
- 26:50main thing. It's going to work out. It's
- 26:51going to work out. Everything going to
- 26:53work out.
- 26:53>> And your daughter, can we brag about
- 26:55her?
- 26:55>> Yeah, I have two daughters. I have one
- 26:57in college and I have one that just
- 26:59started high school this year. Both of
- 27:00them are very beautiful and intelligent.
- 27:03It's hard to merge the two sometimes,
- 27:06but I was able to do that with with
- 27:09obviously with the help of their mom. Um
- 27:12they doing good. I talk to them every
- 27:14day. Me and my daughters have a great
- 27:15relationship. People be like, "Man, why
- 27:17you do that for your daughters?" But
- 27:20this platform that I did was it was
- 27:24intended for my son,
- 27:25>> right? And and everything works out the
- 27:27way it's supposed to. But like seeing
- 27:28again the growth and you in front of our
- 27:31eyes, we are seeing your career. And
- 27:33while you obviously have had so much
- 27:35success from it, we also have learned
- 27:38along the way as well. What has
- 27:39fatherhood taught you and how did it
- 27:41change your life?
- 27:44>> This talk that you're taught me that
- 27:46that you're ultimately responsible for
- 27:48someone else's life.
- 27:50>> Oh my gosh.
- 27:51>> And it never goes away. By the way,
- 27:53since [snorts] the last time I saw you,
- 27:55I'm a parent now. I have a toddler.
- 27:56>> I did not know that.
- 27:57>> I have a daughter. She's four. And wait,
- 27:59she bullies me.
- 28:01>> They will bully you. You have to you
- 28:02have to you have it has they will do it.
- 28:05>> I get bullied
- 28:06>> and so four turns to 14.
- 28:07>> Yeah, I know.
- 28:08>> And you need to like I'm telling you now
- 28:10and the girls are booted.
- 28:13>> She checks me and I'm like and I'm like
- 28:15okay. And I'm like wait what's going on
- 28:17here?
- 28:17>> Yeah, man. Congratulations. But yeah,
- 28:20that's so I'm happy for you before.
- 28:22>> Thank you.
- 28:22>> They are the girls. They're so um
- 28:26if I had to describe them through a
- 28:28taste bud they spicy. Oh,
- 28:31>> they be spicy when they be four.
- 28:33[laughter] You know that little
- 28:35>> that sp they be spicy, man. They sp them
- 28:38girl be spicy.
- 28:39>> Give me give me some advice. Give me
- 28:41some parenting advice. Anything that
- 28:44>> Be a parent.
- 28:46>> Be a parent. I'm cool. Like me me and my
- 28:48kids, we talk we we we
- 28:51>> we might talk like friends sometime and
- 28:52all that, but ultimately it's it's it's
- 28:54definitely a respect level there that
- 28:56they like I when I say this, it's not
- 28:58like we're not playing tennis and going
- 29:00back and forth. It's a understanding. So
- 29:02it's a respect level there. But we joke,
- 29:05we play, we talk about things, we My two
- 29:08daughters got Instagram. We send each
- 29:09other stuff.
- 29:10>> Yeah.
- 29:11>> That I think is funny or pertains to
- 29:12them. But it's still that level of of
- 29:15respect that I feel like a parent has to
- 29:18have or a kid will run over you. You got
- 29:20to think about when we were kids, if
- 29:22nobody if we if it was a house that we
- 29:24can go to to do whatever we wanted to
- 29:26do, that's the house
- 29:27>> that we would go to. But it only just
- 29:29makes sense. It only makes sense to know
- 29:31that.
- 29:32>> Man, I it's been too long since I last
- 29:34saw you. But I'm always proud. I love
- 29:37the evolution. I just I love seeing, you
- 29:41know, your journey. the successes and
- 29:44you willing to share the failures along
- 29:46the way. But I just, you know, I don't
- 29:49feel like you get the credit you
- 29:51deserve. That's me personally.
- 29:53>> Thank you.
- 29:53>> But I I appreciate you and I'm thankful
- 29:56for you and I'm, you know, for all the
- 29:59years that you've given us music
- 30:01consistently, but also shown us how to
- 30:04grow, right, just as a person and to
- 30:08evolve and saying like, "Yeah, I
- 30:09invested here." and and and just
- 30:11expanding like giving us that confidence
- 30:14that we can expand and we can grow too
- 30:17and become a parent and still do our
- 30:19career and pop out when we want to pop
- 30:21out and to have this conversation with
- 30:23you now it makes me so grateful and
- 30:25thankful for you.
- 30:26>> Thank you. Thank you for having me. I
- 30:27appreciate you. Great conversation.
- 30:29>> Yes. Your album Players Only Live Once
- 30:32December 4th and we are going to get it.
- 30:34We're going to run the numbers up and we
- 30:36need the song right now.
- 30:37>> I'm about to get it from you.
- 30:39>> Okay. They sent it. [laughter]
- 30:41>> I love it.
- 30:42>> Oh, they can't they can hear me out
- 30:43there. Okay, let's go.
- 30:44>> Let's go.
- 30:46[music]
