- 0:00You guys, today I'm turning her into me.
- 0:04>> Okay, I'm going to look nothing like you
- 0:06>> You don't know. Maybe maybe it'll turn
- 0:08out like this.
- 0:09>> that?
- 0:10>> Hi you guys, I'm Noelle.
- 0:11>> I'm Sophia.
- 0:12>> And I've been a curly girl for 10 years.
- 0:15>> And I've been trying to unearth my curly
- 0:18girl potential for my whole life.
- 0:21>> It took me literally years to fully
- 0:24understand and embrace my natural
- 0:27afro-textured hair, and it wasn't until
- 0:29I met my girl Madison at L'Alena Salon,
- 0:32where she helped me fully understand
- 0:35what I'm working with here. Obviously,
- 0:37this is the before, but
- 0:38>> But if you look at her TikTok, you can
- 0:40see Noelle has really mastered the art
- 0:43of the curl.
- 0:45>> Exactly.
- 0:45>> Thanks, Madison.
- 0:46>> So, today we are doing a joint bestie
- 0:51curly girl cut, wash, and style, and we
- 0:54are finally going to unearth
- 0:58Sophia's curly girl potential.
- 1:01>> What's under here?
- 1:02>> What's under here?
- 1:03>> What's in here?
- 1:04>> Only Madison [music] can take this and
- 1:07this and give you a princess.
- 1:11>> Also, for context, it is 8:00 a.m. I did
- 1:14drag her out 8:00 a.m. on a Wednesday to
- 1:16get her hair done. So, she's already
- 1:17turned me into her.
- 1:19>> Hopefully, by the end of this
- 1:20appointment, Sophia will not hate me.
- 1:23>> [laughter]
- 1:23>> And it'll all be worth it.
- 1:24>> You're going to have to stay till the
- 1:25end to see what exactly we can do with
- 1:29this.
- 1:30>> Cuz I really don't know. What if she
- 1:32tells me I'm lying? She's like, "Girl,
- 1:33your hair is straight."
- 1:34>> Yeah, she gaslights you the entire time.
- 1:36She's like, "I don't know what you're
- 1:38talking about."
- 1:38>> been gaslighting myself.
- 1:40>> [gasps]
- 1:40>> Well, I guess we'll have to find out.
- 1:43>> she says.
- 1:43>> Here we go, besties. Let's go.
- 1:50>> [music]
- 1:52>> Here we go, besties.
- 1:54Here Here go.
- 1:57>> Hi.
- 1:59>> Good morning. Hi. Good morning. How are
- 2:02you?
- 2:03>> [music]
- 2:03>> Okay. Good morning.
- 2:04>> Good morning, Madison. It's so good to
- 2:07see you.
- 2:07>> It's good to see you, too. Your hair is
- 2:09so long.
- 2:10>> I know. I have so much less [music]
- 2:12breakage now. I would exit the shower
- 2:14with like, you know what I mean? And now
- 2:16it's like, I get a little bit of, you
- 2:18know, natural [music] breakage, but
- 2:20>> Breakage is something that I feel like
- 2:22we need to kind of learn [music]
- 2:24to change the verbage on. A lot of hair
- 2:26like yours, you have high density,
- 2:29tighter curls, not washing it every
- 2:31single day like straight hair.
- 2:32>> [music]
- 2:32>> You're not brushing it out, so it just
- 2:34builds up. Our shedding and the hair
- 2:36loss we have is just shedding. [music] I
- 2:38always tell clients, you worried about
- 2:39hair loss, save the hair, cuz that's the
- 2:41biggest sign of if it's getting bigger,
- 2:43let's go see a doctor. If [music] it's
- 2:45getting smaller, staying the same, we
- 2:46have nothing to really worry about.
- 2:48>> Have you seen a difference in when I
- 2:51first came in, which was about
- 2:52>> 100%
- 2:53>> a year, over a year ago?
- 2:54>> A little over a year ago? 100%
- 2:56>> Well, the fact that I can detangle you
- 2:57like this, [music] like no problem, is a
- 3:00huge factor.
- 3:01>> Mhm.
- 3:02>> It just feels softer. And you [music]
- 3:04have definition that's lasting you
- 3:06longer than just two days.
- 3:09>> Right.
- 3:09>> Cuz what day is this now?
- 3:10>> Oh my god, I washed this on Saturday.
- 3:13>> Okay. So, and this still looks good.
- 3:16That's just the proof in the pudding of
- 3:18like, okay, when you are consistent with
- 3:20the things that you do at home, and
- 3:22consistent with things here, [music]
- 3:24your hair will grow. Your hair will get
- 3:26better.
- 3:26>> Right.
- 3:27>> It's worth it. Cuz my hair looks good
- 3:28and it feels good and I'm happy with it.
- 3:30That's the main thing. [music]
- 3:32I'm happy with my hair.
- 3:34>> Amen to that. So, what are we doing
- 3:38today?
- 3:39>> So, are we trying to like keep length?
- 3:41Are we trying to grow out a little bit
- 3:43longer than this?
- 3:44>> so. I mean, I've never pushed the bounds
- 3:46of how far my hair can go in this state.
- 3:49Like I By this point, [music] I would
- 3:50have like straightened my hair so I can
- 3:52be like, "Oh, length check." You know
- 3:53what I mean? But now I want to see how
- 3:55far can my curls go? What's the length
- 3:58that we need
- 3:58>> We can get you.
- 3:59>> with not no heat and natural hair.
- 4:01>> So then and that was kind of the vibe I
- 4:03was sticking for today is where we just
- 4:04like clean up the bottom. Really it's
- 4:06just these crunchy ends and then just
- 4:08really focus on bringing your shape back
- 4:09up.
- 4:10>> Yeah.
- 4:10>> Cuz we're feeling heavy.
- 4:11>> Yes.
- 4:11>> We're getting a little heavy and that's
- 4:13just what [music] happens with when we
- 4:15are growing our hair out. This goes
- 4:17faster than this. [music]
- 4:18>> That's just all we really need to do
- 4:19today is just bring
- 4:20>> all this up.
- 4:21>> Uh-huh.
- 4:21>> And just clean up the length and [music]
- 4:23it will honestly make it look longer.
- 4:26>> The curls are lasting, but it we're just
- 4:27so heavy and
- 4:28>> Yeah, we're getting
- 4:29>> Cuz it's going like this
- 4:30>> Yep.
- 4:30>> and then out.
- 4:31>> Right.
- 4:32>> But we want all around.
- 4:33>> Exactly.
- 4:34>> Okay, perfect.
- 4:35>> I'm happy with that. Okay, let's do it.
- 4:37>> Perfect.
- 4:43>> It's so much hair.
- 5:08Okay.
- 5:08>> Okay.
- 5:09>> Oh my god, the moment of truth.
- 5:13I'm just kidding.
- 5:14You're like, "Ew."
- 5:15>> [laughter]
- 5:17>> Oh, brother, this guy stinks.
- 5:19>> Exactly.
- 5:21>> It's beautiful. It's long.
- 5:22>> No, it's so long.
- 5:24>> For today, because we are like
- 5:26transitioning.
- 5:27>> Yeah.
- 5:27>> We're trying out curly.
- 5:29>> Yeah.
- 5:29>> Seeing what we're feeling.
- 5:30>> Yeah.
- 5:30>> What is the main goal for today?
- 5:32>> I think the main goal today is to return
- 5:36it to its health, obviously, because
- 5:38[music] I need a trim desperately, of
- 5:40course. So my biggest issue with my hair
- 5:43is definition.
- 5:45>> Yes.
- 5:45>> The frizz hasn't been bad since moving
- 5:47to California, but I sleep on it,
- 5:50everything's gone. Like it's just gone.
- 5:52I want to wear it curly. I don't dislike
- 5:54it curly. It's just
- 5:56>> You don't know how
- 5:57>> I don't know how.
- 5:58>> Curls are just a learning curve, and
- 5:59especially when you grow up in a world
- 6:02that doesn't accept it, and you don't
- 6:04have anyone in your life that's
- 6:07embracing it, it's harder for you to
- 6:09have the want to learn how to do it.
- 6:12>> Yeah.
- 6:12>> For a cut today, do we want to get rid
- 6:15of some length or keep as much length or
- 6:17just like take what needs to go so it
- 6:18feels healthy?
- 6:19>> It can go up to boob level. That's my
- 6:22measurement.
- 6:23>> Boob level.
- 6:23>> That's very common. Drying curly kind of
- 6:25like
- 6:26>> Yeah.
- 6:26>> Chest area.
- 6:27>> Chest area.
- 6:28>> Okay.
- 6:28>> I do love a face-framing piece. I even
- 6:30love a curtain bang moment. My hair,
- 6:32because it's like wavy curly, naturally
- 6:34wants to swoop. [music]
- 6:36>> Yes. And I bet this piece up here, it's
- 6:38probably looser than everything else.
- 6:40>> The hairline is the most delicate area,
- 6:42and it is also the area that we touch up
- 6:44all the time. Typically, it'll have the
- 6:46most heat damage.
- 6:47>> Yeah.
- 6:47>> Just keep that [music] in mind for
- 6:48today.
- 6:49>> It's usually anywhere from two to three
- 6:51curl patterns on one head.
- 6:52>> Yeah. You got great cheekbones.
- 6:53>> So like I'm super down for something up
- 6:56here, for like some shorter pieces.
- 6:59>> My hair, as of right now, almost feels
- 7:01like it has zero personality, if that
- 7:04makes sense.
- 7:05>> Cuz there's just no shape to it.
- 7:06>> shape.
- 7:07>> It's too long. Everything's just way too
- 7:09long
- 7:09>> Everything's too long, if but I think
- 7:11I'm ready to like embrace it and have it
- 7:14be more of a style point.
- 7:16>> that.
- 7:17>> Okay.
- 7:17>> Especially for your curls, because you
- 7:19are learning this, the easiest curly
- 7:21style routine possible. Like
- 7:23>> Effortless.
- 7:23>> Literally effortless with that.
- 7:24>> Okay. [music]
- 7:24>> I'm leaving everything longer today
- 7:26because it is my first time cutting your
- 7:28hair. We always say this is like a first
- 7:29date. I don't want you to ghost me, and
- 7:32I don't want to scare you [laughter]
- 7:32off.
- 7:33>> Top of chest, drying curly, keep our
- 7:35shape kind of more straight up and down,
- 7:37[music] but there's still going to be
- 7:37lots of movement. We're going to have
- 7:39body and lift up here, and we're going
- 7:41to aim for like cheekbones for our face
- 7:44framing. I want you to start thinking
- 7:46about like curly hair that you see on
- 7:48anyone. Yeah. What about that do you
- 7:51like? Really truly think about it so we
- 7:53can customize your hairstyle.
- 7:56>> Loving this.
- 7:58>> Okay, that's it. We're ready to shampoo.
- 8:00>> Let's do it.
- 8:01>> come on back.
- 8:16>> Oh, she's a little thicker than I was
- 8:18thinking.
- 8:18>> She's a little thick.
- 8:19>> just like, I should have known better
- 8:20than that.
- 8:21>> The lower layer of my hair by the nape
- 8:23of my neck is actually the most curly.
- 8:26>> Mhm.
- 8:26>> We don't see the bottom or the back, so
- 8:29usually that is the healthiest or the
- 8:31curliest because it hasn't been
- 8:34affected.
- 8:39>> What do you say to people who say
- 8:41>> Your hair's not curly when it's wet, so
- 8:44you don't have curly hair.
- 8:45>> Oh, that's me. My hair's pin straight
- 8:47when it's wet.
- 8:48>> And that's the gag.
- 8:49>> And period.
- 8:50>> [music]
- 8:50>> curls.
- 8:51>> I say I'm sorry.
- 8:54I say that's not fair.
- 8:56>> Curls are spectrum.
- 8:57>> It is a spectrum term. At the end of the
- 8:59day
- 9:00a curl is a curl, no matter what.
- 9:02>> There's still an elitism to it.
- 9:03>> Totally.
- 9:04>> And an entitlement where it's like, your
- 9:06hair's not curly enough, so you're not
- 9:08really a curly hair girl.
- 9:09>> Mhm.
- 9:10>> Who?
- 9:11>> It just stems a lot in my opinion from
- 9:13like just like systematic racism and
- 9:15just internalized racism and just
- 9:17project it.
- 9:18>> Totally.
- 9:18>> Like a lot of projecting. [music]
- 9:20>> You will never ever hear me tell a
- 9:22client yeah.
- 9:23>> You don't have straight, you don't have
- 9:24curly hair. What are you doing here?
- 9:25>> Yeah.
- 9:26>> I'm sure this is the way non-binary
- 9:28people feel. They're like, trying to fit
- 9:29me into a box is like not helping any of
- 9:31us. Like, I'm just going to live as me
- 9:33and that's how it's going to go and
- 9:35>> Curls are too big to be put into a box,
- 9:37so stop. So stop trying to.
- 9:39>> trying.
- 9:42>> [music]
- 9:56>> That's gorgeous. Look at that shape.
- 9:59Beautiful.
- 10:01Oh my goodness.
- 10:03You guys, look at the difference here.
- 10:05Shape
- 10:07not shape.
- 10:08Shape
- 10:10not shape.
- 10:12>> [music]
- 10:27>> Oh.
- 10:30Yeah, you need a shape.
- 10:31>> Um this is the difference.
- 10:33>> [music]
- 10:33>> Insane.
- 10:35>> How do you feel?
- 10:36>> I feel amazing.
- 10:37>> [laughter]
- 10:44[music]
- 10:54>> Okay Madison, what are your rules on
- 10:56diffusing?
- 10:57>> So the rules of diffusing kind of go
- 10:59along with like products. What you want
- 11:01your end result for your dry hair to be
- 11:03dictate how you diffuse. So you want
- 11:06really controlled defined curls, you're
- 11:08just going to hover over lightly like
- 11:10this when you're diffusing. If you want
- 11:12really big voluminous hair, pump the
- 11:14entire time. [music] You want some more
- 11:17curl, like a little bit more bounce to
- 11:19it, hover for like 5-10 minutes, [music]
- 11:21get that crunch starting to form, then
- 11:24you'll pump a couple times [music] until
- 11:27you get a curl pattern that you're happy
- 11:29with, and then you just hover the rest
- 11:30of the way.
- 11:31>> Sure.
- 11:32Hover.
- 11:33>> Good hover, girl.
- 11:37>> [music]
- 11:47[music]
- 11:48>> I don't want to use a gel on you because
- 11:49you're scared of gels, and that's the
- 11:51only reason why. You can use other
- 11:53products at home.
- 11:54>> Yeah.
- 11:54>> But we've used other products. We
- 11:55haven't used a gel, so that's why I want
- 11:57to use one on you today to show you that
- 11:59it's not scary. [music]
- 12:00>> Gels are friends.
- 12:02>> Not foes.
- 12:03>> Not foes. Advanced Climate Control
- 12:05Featherlight Foam, this is the holy
- 12:07trinity of products, in my opinion. It
- 12:09fights frizz, gives beautiful
- 12:11definition, and beautiful volume, all in
- 12:14one product.
- 12:15>> I'm actually very proud of myself cuz I
- 12:17have been using a foam.
- 12:19>> I love foams.
- 12:19>> So
- 12:20>> Foams are really creamy, and they're
- 12:22really slippery.
- 12:23>> And light.
- 12:24>> And light. Because of how much [music]
- 12:26hair you have, we need to use lighter
- 12:28products. If something is too heavy, you
- 12:30will get weighed down.
- 12:31>> Exactly, yeah.
- 12:34>> I always [music] start mid-lengths and
- 12:35ends, raking it through, and then
- 12:38whatever's left over, swipe on [music]
- 12:39top. This is our primer.
- 12:41>> What about leave-in conditioner?
- 12:43>> This is it.
- 12:44>> Oh.
- 12:44>> So, no leave-in conditioner for you.
- 12:46That's weighing you down.
- 12:47>> What?
- 12:54>> [music]
- 12:55>> So, this is like after we finish styling
- 12:56our hair, you're going to take our wet
- 12:58towel, and you're going to look up and
- 12:59back. You're going to shake your head.
- 13:01Come from the bottom and come up, and
- 13:04give that scr- squish.
- 13:05>> Squish.
- 13:06>> You want to hear that squish.
- 13:07>> Yeah.
- 13:08>> And this is helping bring out the curls
- 13:10some more. It's also removing excess
- 13:13water and products.
- 13:18>> The colander!
- 13:20>> Oh my god, it's happening.
- 13:25The colander view wash, we're going to
- 13:28this side and we're going to bring it up
- 13:31and then hold it at the top a little bit
- 13:34and [snorts] then we'll bring it down
- 13:36>> [music]
- 13:36>> and it just brings the curl out more
- 13:39and helps activate it more without it
- 13:42getting too frizzy.
- 13:47Little hairspray.
- 13:48>> I've also been scared of hairspray. I
- 13:51love this stuff.
- 13:52>> This is the one product you both can
- 13:54use.
- 13:56>> Love this one.
- 13:57>> Yeah.
- 13:58>> Love it.
- 14:03>> [music]
- 14:08[music]
- 14:23>> And this is going to be your refresher.
- 14:26>> Okay.
- 14:26>> In the morning. Who is she? Botanical
- 14:29Boost from Ouidad. This is one of my
- 14:30favorite products.
- 14:31>> [music]
- 14:33>> I'm glad.
- 14:34>> And it's so long.
- 14:35>> And it's so
- 14:35>> It's so really nice and long
- 14:37>> Yeah.
- 14:37>> and healthy.
- 14:38>> Yeah. So good. Yeah.
- 14:42Yeah, we're all done, Angel Kinks.
- 14:44>> Thank you, magician. A magician.
- 15:04>> [music]
- 15:09>> First of all, can we just have a moment
- 15:10for the curl?
- 15:11>> Like what?
- 15:12>> Ladies, the curls are curling.
- 15:15>> I also didn't expect to get emotional on
- 15:17your behalf, but it was just like this
- 15:18is discovery.
- 15:20>> discovery. in
- 15:21>> world?
- 15:22>> It's such
- 15:22>> a cathartic moment and like seeing your
- 15:24bestie go through that, I was just like,
- 15:26"Oh my god." I say this about being a
- 15:28woman is that it's almost like we're
- 15:29born with a permanent condition that
- 15:32needs to be treated. If you don't like
- 15:35the hair that comes out of your head,
- 15:37that almost feels like a permanent
- 15:39condition that needs to be like [music]
- 15:40treated for you to feel confident.
- 15:43>> Exactly. And I think like the key
- 15:45takeaways from this experience, number
- 15:47one, there's no one way to be a curly
- 15:49girl.
- 15:49>> Yes. She's as much as a curly girl as I
- 15:52am and labels, they are expansive and
- 15:55they can mean many different types of
- 15:57things.
- 15:57>> Oh my god, we forgot to ask her what my
- 15:58curl type is.
- 15:59>> Oh, yeah.
- 16:00>> I feel like it's 2B is what I've always
- 16:02said, but
- 16:03>> What do you guys think?
- 16:05>> I think the second takeaway here is that
- 16:07hair care is like skin care.
- 16:09>> Yeah.
- 16:10>> It's like taking care of your body. It's
- 16:11like a daily effort and just because
- 16:14something takes more effort doesn't mean
- 16:16that it's not worthwhile, doesn't mean
- 16:17that it's not natural. Doesn't
- 16:18>> Right. All good relationships take love
- 16:21and effort and time. So like why are we
- 16:23not giving that to our hair?
- 16:24>> Exactly. Embracing the fact that my hair
- 16:27has the ability to do this is something
- 16:29that I had to discover.
- 16:30>> We really got to like retrain our inner
- 16:33monologue and verbage so that we don't
- 16:36just constantly [music] feel like crap
- 16:37about ourselves.
- 16:38>> Exactly. Excuse
- 16:39>> Bless you.
- 16:41>> Okay, and then Sophia, what's our last
- 16:43takeaway? [music]
- 16:44>> Our last lesson is gel is our friend,
- 16:47not foe.
