- 0:01warhol's arrival at his London Gallery
- 0:03is like a royal progress the onform
- 0:05terrible become grand old man of Modern
- 0:08Art but would he reveal much of what is
- 0:10behind the enigmatic image
- 0:13this is the first major series of
- 0:15self-portraits for quite a long time
- 0:17what prompted this one
- 0:21[Music]
- 0:22it's just
- 0:23I ran out of ideas
- 0:27but the one thing Warhol has not been
- 0:28short of is ideas he's generated enough
- 0:31critical comment to fellow forest or two
- 0:33having first shocked the art World in
- 0:351962 with his images of Campbell's Soup
- 0:38tins I should have still been painting
- 0:40it it would have been a better thing
- 0:42really yeah
- 0:44then somebody can just be like a store
- 0:47and they just come in and ask you for a
- 0:49can of soup and you just it was just the
- 0:51easiest way to do something
- 0:54I guess everybody Paints the same mature
- 0:56over and over again anyway so
- 0:58so you could have stuck with the soup
- 1:00tins and the Brillo boxes oh well just a
- 1:03soup can
- 1:04what was the interest to you then in
- 1:06that Campbell souped in what gave you
- 1:08the idea of doing that
- 1:09oh I used to eat it every day I still do
- 1:12so
- 1:14and Mr Billy boy I think has some too
- 1:16are you American Master Billy boy no
- 1:19from Mars I think on Mars
- 1:23and Christopher Marcus is I work for
- 1:25interview magazine Andy's magazine
- 1:28how much are you involved within to be a
- 1:30magazine oh a lot I give a cover away
- 1:33every minute
- 1:34and then I have to
- 1:36go and hide
- 1:39it's not the more important to you at
- 1:41the moment than your own work than your
- 1:42silver screens or what's most of your
- 1:44time spent doing
- 1:46most of my time is just to get up in the
- 1:48morning
- 1:50after the Soup cans came a series of
- 1:52warholized photographs of leading Rock
- 1:54and Movie figures notably Elvis Presley
- 1:57and again proving that he had a gift for
- 1:59selecting his images that other screen
- 2:01Immortal Marilyn Monroe
- 2:03and always concerned with the grocery
- 2:05store another American archetype the
- 2:07coke bottle how much do you think of
- 2:10your success as an artist probably the
- 2:12best known in the world at the moment is
- 2:14as a result of your own personal image
- 2:17yourself as a work of art
- 2:22well that's what everybody says I don't
- 2:24know I work I I work all the time
- 2:26and work often seems to involve being
- 2:28the apparent calm at the center of a
- 2:30storm that his presence creates which of
- 2:33course contributes to the art itself but
- 2:35is Warhol still doing interesting work
- 2:39I think it's an image of our time
- 2:42I think that it's
- 2:44um
- 2:45it's a paradoxical image isn't it it's
- 2:48blank and yet it's extremely intelligent
- 2:51it's frightening and yet it's uh
- 2:55romantic in a way
- 2:57it's all sorts of opposites combined in
- 3:01one image but that is Warhol after all
- 3:04there's one nice picture painted about
- 3:06100 times different colors but I mean I
- 3:08think it's just a bit boring to be
- 3:09honest but he was always sort of
- 3:11particularly Adept at capturing a time
- 3:13and you know possibly the time isn't
- 3:15really interesting anymore and that's
- 3:16why the artist isn't really particularly
- 3:18interesting I'm excited by them I think
- 3:20they're good I think and is one of the
- 3:23greatest artists of this century
- 3:25meanwhile Warhol is collecting between
- 3:2810 000 and sixty five thousand dollars a
- 3:30picture but is he really making some
- 3:32hidden comment at our expense no I just
- 3:35do whatever I do you know just get by
