  1. 0:00today we're going to be taking a drive
  2. 0:02in a 1937 packard 120. i already did a
  3. 0:05video on a walk with a
  4. 0:06did a video of the walk around with it
  5. 0:08so if you have not seen that take a look
  6. 0:10at the walk around and that will show
  7. 0:11you everything about the car
  8. 0:12uh the operations of the functionality
  9. 0:15the details the outside and that sort of
  10. 0:16thing but what we're looking at right
  11. 0:17here is a 1937
  12. 0:19packard 120. now i'll just repeat myself
  13. 0:22in the other video
  14. 0:23120 deals with the wheelbase right here
  15. 0:25120 inch wheelbase the 115 has a 115
  16. 0:28inch wheelbase
  17. 0:29the extra length of a 120 is made up
  18. 0:32here in the fender so you've got a much
  19. 0:34longer graceful flowing fender on the
  20. 0:36120s
  21. 0:37and most importantly you've got the
  22. 0:38straight eighth famous packard straight
  23. 0:40eight six
  24. 0:41eight eight cylinder motor under the
  25. 0:42hood straight eight cylinder packard
  26. 0:44motor
  27. 0:44and in the 115 you have the straight six
  28. 0:47so this car of the straight eight is a
  29. 0:49super smooth runner
  30. 0:50suicide doors fantastic car to drive
  31. 0:53around in
  32. 0:54and interestingly enough this car has a
  33. 0:56little bit of a greenish tinted glass
  34. 0:58in it probably special orders from the
  35. 0:59factory uh this car right here
  36. 1:02i gave you the kind of the run around
  37. 1:04here but basically just turn the key on
  38. 1:06i press the clutch and so i'm not
  39. 1:07spitting the transmission when i'm
  40. 1:08trying to start the motor with these six
  41. 1:10bolt systems hit the key
  42. 1:13up come on
  43. 1:16there she goes
  44. 1:22so she's running we're charging right
  45. 1:25here
  46. 1:26about up to 180 uh volts of temp
  47. 1:30our volts 180 degrees of temperature
  48. 1:35uh 30 pounds of oil pressure about a
  49. 1:37quarter tank of fuel
  50. 1:38and interestingly enough i'd mentioned
  51. 1:40before this clock works too
  52. 1:42it's just moved it's about five till
  53. 1:45four
  54. 1:46uh says it's four o'clock in my phone so
  55. 1:49interestingly enough it works and the
  56. 1:51horn on this car the trumpets
  57. 1:52uh we'll go ahead and blow the horn
  58. 1:56it really makes a great sound so anyway
  59. 1:58let's let's and you got a throttle here
  60. 2:00too by the way
  61. 2:03so i can set a fast idle and that sort
  62. 2:05of thing on my throttle
  63. 2:07um but anyway i gave you the kind of the
  64. 2:11walk around of it so you've seen uh what
  65. 2:14everything does
  66. 2:15so let's just take it for a drive close
  67. 2:17this door these things close like a bank
  68. 2:18vault
  69. 2:20perfect and uh here we go
  70. 2:23take our break off three speeds so
  71. 2:27that's reverse right there
  72. 2:30that's first second
  73. 2:33third so put her in first
  74. 2:37ease the clutch out a little bit and
  75. 2:40uh i'm trying to hold this video
  76. 2:46and steer at the same time interestingly
  77. 2:49enough these bias
  78. 2:50ply tires and no power steering
  79. 2:53it's pretty amazing how light the
  80. 2:55steering is on these cars
  81. 2:57now i will say you've got to be rolling
  82. 3:00you've got to be rolling to move the
  83. 3:02steering wheel you can uh
  84. 3:04just turn it if you're not moving but
  85. 3:07super smooth running car kind of check
  86. 3:10our traffic here both ways nothing
  87. 3:11coming that way but back in first gear
  88. 3:15ease the clutch out and you really don't
  89. 3:17even have to give this car any gas it
  90. 3:19just moves along
  91. 3:28speedometer works
  92. 3:31gauge everything on this car works uh
  93. 3:34the one thing dude i really do love that
  94. 3:35horn
  95. 3:37they know you're coming through when you
  96. 3:39blow that thing two big trumpets under
  97. 3:40the hood
  98. 3:41take a look at the other video and you
  99. 3:42can see
  100. 3:44uh you can see those trumpets now this
  101. 3:46car a lot of the packards
  102. 3:48uh and i'll open my cow event here to
  103. 3:50get a little air moving
  104. 3:53a lot of these packards uh with the
  105. 3:56three speeds
  106. 3:57had an electric overdrive you just let
  107. 3:58off the gas and uh it automatically
  108. 4:01shifts into overdrive
  109. 4:03this car does not it has a uh just a
  110. 4:05standard three-speed transmission so
  111. 4:07on the road this car is it's a it's a 60
  112. 4:10mile an hour cruiser you're not going to
  113. 4:12be on the interstate going
  114. 4:1375 or anything like that
  115. 4:19i'm still in third gear that's the
  116. 4:21beautiful beautiful thing about this
  117. 4:22street eight
  118. 4:24you can leave this thing in third gear
  119. 4:26and go anywhere has so much
  120. 4:28torque very smooth
  121. 4:33and i would imagine you could probably
  122. 4:34adapt an overdrive transmission with
  123. 4:36this car if you wanted to
  124. 4:38uh and i don't know if folks have done
  125. 4:40that or not but
  126. 4:44that would be a neat thing to do also
  127. 4:46this car would probably benefit from
  128. 4:48radial tire that's got the bias ply on
  129. 4:50it
  130. 4:51it's it's it's a little uh
  131. 4:55you feel it kind of moving with the
  132. 4:56grooves in the road a little bit
  133. 4:58if i was going to take this on a long
  134. 5:00trip i would probably be uh
  135. 5:02inclined to put radials on it you can
  136. 5:03get them from coker and they're not
  137. 5:05cheap but uh the buy supplies have a
  138. 5:08nice look but i really like the uh
  139. 5:10i like the way the radials drive still
  140. 5:13got my turn signal on there
  141. 5:15this car was upfitted at some point in
  142. 5:17its life with
  143. 5:18a really a period correct uh
  144. 5:21turn signal system when these cars were
  145. 5:23new they didn't have turn signals you
  146. 5:24put your hand out the window
  147. 5:26held it up to slow down pointed it to
  148. 5:29the left
  149. 5:31or you held it up for a right-hand turn
  150. 5:34pointed it out the window for a
  151. 5:36left-hand turn and held your hand down
  152. 5:39to show that you were stopping if you
  153. 5:40didn't have any brake lights
  154. 5:45banjo steering wheel on this car that
  155. 5:46was an option back
  156. 5:48you had a whole list of options that you
  157. 5:50could get on this packer
  158. 5:51120 and one of the things in the option
  159. 5:55catalog was a banjo steering wheel
  160. 5:58probably a pretty expensive item back in
  161. 5:59the day
  162. 6:03this car has the original owner's manual
  163. 6:05in it uh it's in the glove box i won't
  164. 6:07get it out right now while i'm driving
  165. 6:09but i'm thinking that
  166. 6:10uh owner's manual or maybe it was the
  167. 6:12dealer literature
  168. 6:14um it it showed you all the different
  169. 6:17options and i think the heater down here
  170. 6:19i think that was an option as well
  171. 6:27but you think about 1937 you know this
  172. 6:30car
  173. 6:30today uh
  174. 6:34drives pretty nice i mean you could
  175. 6:36imagine back in 1937
  176. 6:39uh you know how advanced this car
  177. 6:43and how much quality went into this car
  178. 6:44when it was built
  179. 6:49look we got a dog up here i think we're
  180. 6:51going to slow down
  181. 6:52[Music]
  182. 6:55and i still haven't shifted out of third
  183. 6:56gear i mean this car
  184. 6:58just has great torque and uh
  185. 7:02watch out there doggie i'm still in
  186. 7:05third gear and i'm going
  187. 7:06less than 20 miles an hour now we can
  188. 7:08shift up to second
  189. 7:10if you want to accelerate a little bit
  190. 7:14faster
  191. 7:21a curvy road here
  192. 7:30let's look at that turn second gotta
  193. 7:32remember to cancel they don't cancel on
  194. 7:42themselves
  195. 7:44just a very easy driving car
  196. 7:48and the ride in it is just spectacular
  197. 7:50there's no rattles
  198. 7:52the shocks work really well
  199. 7:56this is what it would be like if it was
  200. 7:581937 and you
  201. 8:00you had the means to buy a packard and
  202. 8:03of course i said the other video
  203. 8:05that back seat back there is there's
  204. 8:07more room back there in the back seat
  205. 8:09than there is in the front seat and
  206. 8:11often times the folks who bought these
  207. 8:13cars
  208. 8:14they didn't buy them to sit in front
  209. 8:15drive them they bought them to sit in
  210. 8:17the back they had a
  211. 8:18they had a driver uh most likely
  212. 8:22i think we're kind of coming into a
  213. 8:23little residential area here
  214. 8:26slow her down to about 30 miles an hour
  215. 8:29and i know i'm kind of pointing into the
  216. 8:32sun
  217. 8:34but
  218. 8:38this is about it uh the glass on this
  219. 8:40car is fantastic it's got some
  220. 8:43bugs and some things on it but uh but
  221. 8:46this is it
  222. 8:46this is a 37 packard 120 and that's
  223. 8:49about all i've
  224. 8:50got to say about it uh i hope you
  225. 8:52enjoyed the ride along
  226. 8:53and uh we'll we'll talking with you
  227. 8:56again
  228. 8:57all right take care and if you like the
  229. 8:59videos
