- 0:15>> Welcome back everyone to Unreal Engine
- 0:16beginners guide to building an
- 0:18environment. In the last lesson we left
- 0:20it off by getting the roof tile set up
- 0:22with using these planks as well as a
- 0:25basic support using this type of a
- 0:29post. And now we're going to actually
- 0:32attach them all together using some wood
- 0:35pieces. So, let's go ahead and get right
- 0:37into it. I think for this one we can
- 0:39make use out of a wooden beam perhaps.
- 0:43Yeah, I think the wooden beam is going
- 0:45to work really nice for us. So, let's go
- 0:46ahead and use that right off the bat and
- 0:49we're just going to position it in a way
- 0:51that's going to be placed sideways.
- 0:54But, of course we need to make sure that
- 0:56we have the snapping tool enabled. So,
- 0:58this way we're going to be able to
- 1:00nicely position it sideways just like
- 1:02that.
- 1:03And drag it to the side.
- 1:06And I think we can just put it in a
- 1:09halfway through sort of a way.
- 1:11And I think that's going to look quite
- 1:13nice. Of course, we got to extend it to
- 1:16make sure we have it sideways like so.
- 1:20And the snapping tool can probably be
- 1:22turned off for this one operation
- 1:26or the scaling.
- 1:28And I think we can have it just like
- 1:29that. I think that's going to look quite
- 1:31nice. It also has a bit of a different
- 1:34angle on this one and I'm trying to
- 1:35figure out if it's actually going to
- 1:36look well or not. But, before doing that
- 1:39I think the overall kind of a wood that
- 1:42we have for this end is a little bit too
- 1:45thin. So, we're going to click R and
- 1:48extend our scale based on the X and I
- 1:53think Z value. I think that's what it
- 1:55is.
- 1:56I think we're going to extend it. Oh,
- 1:57it's going to be Z and Y value. So, this
- 2:00bar over here, we're just going to
- 2:02extend it. So, basically, we're not
- 2:03going to extend it sideways
- 2:05into its height anymore.
- 2:08And all in all, I think that's going to
- 2:10look quite nice. We can even just put it
- 2:12straight into the house, the side of the
- 2:14wall,
- 2:15and that will make it look really nice,
- 2:18I reckon.
- 2:20And with these,
- 2:22I think we can actually make a selection
- 2:24for all of those like so, and hit Ctrl G
- 2:27just to make sure we have them nicely
- 2:29grouped up. Let's hit Ctrl G. I'm
- 2:31actually going to go and change my
- 2:33scalability from high to low. Again, if
- 2:36you're not seeing this sort of a menu,
- 2:39just make sure you go on to the upper
- 2:42right corner, to the settings tab, then
- 2:44engine scalability settings, and in
- 2:47here, you'll basically get the same
- 2:48menu. And once you start playing around
- 2:49with it, you should be able to get the
- 2:51same kind of a button in here as well.
- 2:54So, I'll just go ahead and use the
- 2:56scalability set as low real quick, and
- 2:58just position my entire object like so.
- 3:02And I think we should get these planks
- 3:05to go underneath this roof. I think
- 3:07it'll look much nicer that way. So, I'm
- 3:09actually just going to position them to
- 3:11be right underneath that roof like so.
- 3:14And maybe you want to drag it inwards
- 3:17just like that.
- 3:18And all in all, that might look quite
- 3:20nice. Although, right now, these tiles
- 3:23aren't looking like they're going to be
- 3:25passing through this. So, I'm actually
- 3:27going to click R and extend them by
- 3:29quite a bit
- 3:30in this area.
- 3:33Because they're grouped up, they're
- 3:34behaving a little bit weird when I'm
- 3:36scaling them up. So, I'm just going to
- 3:37use this
- 3:39kind of a mode.
- 3:40And right now, I think this is going to
- 3:43look quite nice.
- 3:45Okay.
- 3:46I think we should get this a little bit
- 3:47to the back, though.
- 3:49Maybe a little bit higher up.
- 3:51And this is going to look quite nice.
- 3:53Okay.
- 3:54So, I'm thinking that although this is
- 3:57looking really nice as it is, we should
- 3:59probably get some support all going over
- 4:01in this area as well. And I think we can
- 4:04make use out of the same planks that we
- 4:06had for the bottom of this area over
- 4:09here.
- 4:11I'm just going to select this,
- 4:13bring it to the side,
- 4:15and position it in the right kind of
- 4:17way.
- 4:18And actually, I'm just going to get the
- 4:19default material that we had previously.
- 4:21So, I'm going to go in the bottom right
- 4:23corner with this selected, open up the
- 4:26content browser for this material by
- 4:28clicking on this button over here,
- 4:30and just reattach the default material
- 4:31that we had previously by dragging and
- 4:34dropping right onto the mesh. So, this
- 4:36was the default color that we had.
- 4:38Since it's not going to work quite as
- 4:41well if we had the previous bridge
- 4:43material for this area.
- 4:46I think I can just squish it down a
- 4:48little bit,
- 4:50put it to the side like so,
- 4:52squish it
- 4:54in regards to its height.
- 4:56Maybe that's already looking quite nice,
- 4:58but I don't quite like
- 5:00the way this is being pulled out. I
- 5:02think I'm just going to bring it to the
- 5:04back like so.
- 5:06Uh maybe, just maybe, no. Let's go ahead
- 5:09and play around with it a little bit
- 5:11until we get the right type of settings.
- 5:13And basically, we just want to make sure
- 5:15that this is kind of underneath this one
- 5:19over here.
- 5:20So, it's going to give us the right type
- 5:21of results.
- 5:23And actually, yeah, let's go ahead and
- 5:25make sure to raise it up to just a
- 5:27little bit as well.
- 5:29Trying to make sure that this doesn't go
- 5:31beyond this plank over here, but I just
- 5:34want to make sure that we're kind of
- 5:36leaving some gap over here on this end.
- 5:39And this will just make sure it looks
- 5:40quite nice. Or maybe we can even just
- 5:42put it to the side.
- 5:44Trying to think what would look more
- 5:45realistic
- 5:47in regards to how this house is being
- 5:49built. And by default, if we were to
- 5:51just leave it as is because I had this
- 5:54house set up like this,
- 5:56it's going to be sticking out. So, maybe
- 5:57I'll just bring it all the way down.
- 6:00Yeah, I think this is going to look
- 6:01quite all right in regards to how this
- 6:03is being set up.
- 6:05Going to bring it even back even more.
- 6:08Yeah, I think this is going to look
- 6:08quite nice. Going to turn off the
- 6:10scalability from low to go back to high
- 6:13just to see how the colors are going to
- 6:15look like. And I think this is the
- 6:17moment where we actually need to switch
- 6:18up the colors a little bit. So, let's go
- 6:20ahead and do that actually.
- 6:22Going to select this entire area. Going
- 6:25to actually
- 6:27make sure that we ungroup them all
- 6:29because otherwise we can't make use out
- 6:32of the materials like this. So, we're
- 6:35going to hold control uh shift and A G
- 6:38to ungroup them.
- 6:41And now we should be able to
- 6:43Yeah, I think now we should be able to
- 6:45just select them all like so.
- 6:48Just one by one. And once we have them
- 6:50all selected, the material because
- 6:52they're using the same material, it's
- 6:53going to be this one.
- 6:55I'm going to actually make sure I open
- 6:58up this within the content browser.
- 7:01And actually
- 7:04I think I'll just
- 7:05The default one was the second one, the
- 7:08material instance that we created as the
- 7:10second one. So, I'm going to select
- 7:11this. Click control C, control V, and
- 7:13make a duplicate out of that. So, now we
- 7:15have a fourth material instance for
- 7:17that. And we have all of those boards
- 7:18selected. So, all we got to do is drag
- 7:20and drop this into the materials tab on
- 7:22the right-hand side. And this way we'll
- 7:25be able to change them all up.
- 7:27Now, if we by any chance had multiple uh
- 7:31planks selected with uh the variation of
- 7:33materials, so for example, like this
- 7:35plank over here over here had a
- 7:37different variation comparison in
- 7:39comparison to this one over here cuz we
- 7:41wanted to kind of brighten it up.
- 7:43What we can do is once we have them
- 7:45selected, uh click display to materials
- 7:48and it'll show you two elements and just
- 7:50basically make sure you replace that
- 7:52material both of these material
- 7:53instances with one of those that we just
- 7:56copied and pasted and created a new
- 7:58material instance. So,
- 8:01if you have multiple material instances,
- 8:03basically just make sure you replace
- 8:04both of them. But, I just so happened to
- 8:07when I made a copy out of them, I had a
- 8:11one material instance, which made a
- 8:12process just a little bit faster. But,
- 8:15yeah. Going back to the material
- 8:17instance, let's go ahead and open it up
- 8:19right away and make some adjustments to
- 8:21it.
- 8:22And I think this one should be a little
- 8:26bit I'm going to actually enable albedo
- 8:28tint and albedo controls and right away
- 8:30I think I'll just lower the saturation
- 8:32by quite a bit actually
- 8:34to a value of 0.7 maybe 0.8.
- 8:39Yeah, I think 0.8 is going to be quite
- 8:41all right.
- 8:43Going to darken them up by quite a bit.
- 8:470.5
- 8:49Already looking quite nice. Maybe even
- 8:51lower the saturation even more.
- 8:530.5 No, 0.6 0.7.
- 8:570.7 will do.
- 8:59And albedo tint,
- 9:01let's get some brownish tint like so.
- 9:04Not too much though. So, I'm just going
- 9:06to
- 9:07lower the saturation to this amount just
- 9:10a little bit.
- 9:11It's going to give us some really nice
- 9:13results.
- 9:14So, it'll just make sure that we have a
- 9:16more or less the same kind of a color
- 9:18tint throughout all of these boards
- 9:19because some of them were as you can see
- 9:22uh just too much variation in them and
- 9:26in return we get them to look way too
- 9:28noisy.
- 9:30So, right now we have this sort of a
- 9:32setup. And I think right now
- 9:35we can even increase the contrast or
- 9:38maybe lower it. Let's try lowering this
- 9:39down and see how that would look like.
- 9:42Maybe that actually would look quite
- 9:43nice.
- 9:44Of course, it uh it'll change the entire
- 9:46color, so
- 9:47we need to be mindful on when we're
- 9:50changing this.
- 9:52So, I think the contrast can be lowered
- 9:55by quite a bit.
- 9:562.8 That'll just give us a more of a
- 9:59bland-looking color for this area. I
- 10:02think that's going to be much nicer. And
- 10:04of course, we need to lower the
- 10:05brightness. But in regards to the
- 10:07brightness, we can probably use the tint
- 10:09and just lower it like so. And that'll
- 10:11give us Yeah, that'll give us a real
- 10:13nice result in regards to the wood. I
- 10:15think that just makes it look so much
- 10:18nicer. So, as you can see, this area for
- 10:20the water for the bridge has a more of a
- 10:23gritty, dirty-looking um setup. It has a
- 10:27sort of a even I could say like a moss
- 10:29type of a texture, but this one is a
- 10:32more of a smooth texture. It just makes
- 10:34it look so much nicer. And it just looks
- 10:36like it's been dried up by the sun and
- 10:38just kind of bleached out by the overall
- 10:40weather of being on top of the roof. So,
- 10:44I think all in all,
- 10:46this will look much better.
- 10:48But of course, we need to make
- 10:50adjustments to these wood supports as
- 10:52well. Quite a look. They look quite all
- 10:54right, but we need to make sure we just
- 10:56adjust them just a little bit. I think
- 10:58we need to darken them up just a little
- 11:00bit to make them look nicer. So, we're
- 11:02going to open up the texture. We're
- 11:04going to make a duplicate out of it.
- 11:05We're going to attach this duplicate.
- 11:07And now we're going to go right into it
- 11:10and adjust the albedo controls. I think
- 11:13we can just lower down this brightness
- 11:15by quite a bit.
- 11:17And we can probably change up the
- 11:19saturation.
- 11:22And how about the contrast?
- 11:25Two? Nope.
- 11:270.5? Nope. 0.8?
- 11:290.1.4? I'm playing around with the
- 11:31values. Usually, the best way to check
- 11:33how the texture would look like is to
- 11:35check the extreme values on both ends
- 11:38and see what exactly is being affected
- 11:41within this parameter. And usually,
- 11:44based on the type of texture you're
- 11:45having, it's going to give us
- 11:47often like different types of results
- 11:49based on the coloring of the texture.
- 11:52So, right now, I think contrast 1.2 is
- 11:54going to look quite nice. I think it
- 11:56actually makes it look really nice,
- 11:59actually. So, let's go ahead and keep it
- 12:00as is.
- 12:02Now, finally, we've got to make sure
- 12:03that these beams have the same type of a
- 12:06setup. So, we're going to open this up.
- 12:09Go and
- 12:10apply a different texture. So, I'm just
- 12:13making sure we are within this folder.
- 12:15Selecting this, control C, control V.
- 12:18And probably apply onto this edge.
- 12:22And now, we're going to darken it up. We
- 12:24can probably make use out of the same
- 12:26settings we had previously. So, I'm
- 12:27going to select this, actually go back
- 12:29onto its folder. And now, we're going to
- 12:32double-click on this. And what we can do
- 12:34is we can right-click on the albedo
- 12:36controls, like so. Select copy
- 12:40like this, and we basically copy all the
- 12:42values for the albedo controls. So, now
- 12:45if we close this down, go back onto the
- 12:47settings for this one, open this up,
- 12:49make sure that this is a duplicate
- 12:51material instance.
- 12:53Go open this up, like so.
- 12:55We can enable albedo controls,
- 12:57right-click, and hit paste. And this
- 13:00way, it'll basically ensure that it
- 13:02gives us the same kind of adjustments
- 13:04that we had previously, because it was
- 13:06more or less
- 13:07similar-looking texture
- 13:09to this pole over here. It actually
- 13:11gives us more or less the similar kind
- 13:13of a look as well. So, that is quite
- 13:15nice. And we can try doing the same for
- 13:17this pole as well, actually. So, let's
- 13:20go ahead and open this up. Control C,
- 13:21control V, make a duplicate. Drag this
- 13:24right onto its mesh.
- 13:25Open it up. Adjust the albedo controls.
- 13:28Right click, paste.
- 13:30And we should
- 13:32if we do it properly, that is. It's not
- 13:35I think it messed it up somehow. I'm
- 13:37going to go back onto the
- 13:40uh
- 13:41material instance that we had
- 13:42previously. By the way, we can double
- 13:43click on this icon over here and just
- 13:45straight up open up the material
- 13:47instance. And I'm going to right click,
- 13:49copy, go back onto the material instance
- 13:52that we just copied, open it up, and
- 13:54right click and paste. Now it works.
- 13:57Okay, perfect. But [snorts] I think it's
- 13:58a little bit too dark
- 14:00for this one. So, I'm actually going to
- 14:02increase the brightness to 0.7.
- 14:04I think now it looks quite nice,
- 14:05actually.
- 14:07It looks like it's part of the same
- 14:09weathering system and like it's just
- 14:11been built in the same span of time and
- 14:14it has the same type of a look as the
- 14:17upper parts of this wood, which is quite
- 14:20nice. So, yeah, I think we're pretty
- 14:21much done with the roof. So, thank you
- 14:23so much for watching and in next lesson
- 14:24we're actually going to start off by
- 14:27breaking up this roof a little bit more.
- 14:28Although, we have some textures for the
- 14:30sides of the roof, obviously it's just
- 14:32too plain looking. So, yeah, that's what
- 14:35we're going to do in the next lesson.
- 14:36So, thank you so much for watching and
- 14:37I'll see you in a bit.
