- 0:03May 20th, 1967.
- 0:05An unremarkable day.
- 0:07A 16-year-old girl eats dinner with her
- 0:09mother and a friend.
- 0:11She starts to feel herself being pulled
- 0:14away.
- 0:15"Stretched," she said, "like a piece of
- 0:18taffy."
- 0:19Woozy, she stands up to tell her mother
- 0:21she's going to pass out.
- 0:23But before she can speak,
- 0:25she collapses.
- 0:27They put her in the car to go to the
- 0:29hospital.
- 0:30The nearest one is 20 minutes away.
- 0:33They're running out of time. She's
- 0:34stopped breathing. Someone calls for
- 0:36help. The girl hears sirens, ambulances.
- 0:40She's tired. She wants to be done. But
- 0:43she realizes something.
- 0:45She has to fight.
- 0:46She has to fight for her life.
- 0:49She tries. She urges herself to hang on,
- 0:51to stay.
- 0:53But it's just too hard. It's too much.
- 0:57She can't do it.
- 0:59She surrenders. [music]
- 1:13Renee Passero grew up in La Crescenta,
- 1:16California.
- 1:18It was a town so small they didn't even
- 1:20have a post office.
- 1:21Everyone knew each other.
- 1:23At age four, Renee nearly died of
- 1:26scarlet fever.
- 1:28The illness lingered for years and kept
- 1:30her bedridden. [music]
- 1:32But a sweet elderly man who she saw
- 1:35around and called her granddaddy kept
- 1:37her company.
- 1:39When later she identified her granddaddy
- 1:41in a photo, she learned that he had died
- 1:44before her mother was born.
- 1:46Later, her dear friend and cousin
- 1:49Nanette appeared to her and told her
- 1:51that she had died that day during a
- 1:53tonsillectomy.
- 1:55Nanette was happy but sad her grieving
- 1:57[music] parents.
- 1:59Renee told her mother about Nanette.
- 2:02Soon after, the phone rang
- 2:04>> [music]
- 2:04>> and Nanette's mother was on the other
- 2:06line
- 2:07telling her that Nanette had died.
- 2:10At age seven, Renee was diagnosed with
- 2:13rheumatic [music] fever.
- 2:15Things were worse this time and she
- 2:17nearly died.
- 2:19Granddaddy came back
- 2:20>> [music]
- 2:21>> as well as a beautiful, radiant being.
- 2:24She felt peace and did not want to get
- 2:27better.
- 2:28But she had something to learn.
- 2:31As I was grieving and bemoaning to my
- 2:33granddaddy about being sent back in a
- 2:36flash it became clear to me that
- 2:38suffering in this life can be a gift.
- 2:42Suffering is a catalyst which creates
- 2:44for us opportunities to grow
- 2:46spiritually.
- 2:48It helps us both individually and as a
- 2:50society to develop spiritual qualities.
- 2:55It's an interesting statement. It sounds
- 2:57like a bit of a paradox but it's one
- 3:00that strangely enough has been echoed in
- 3:02other spiritual experiences.
- 3:04It was explained in the greatest detail
- 3:06by the [music] 18th century Swedish
- 3:08scientist and theologian Emanuel
- 3:10Swedenborg
- 3:12who encountered [music] the same thing
- 3:13in his spiritual experiences.
- 3:17Anyone who imagines that the outer self
- 3:19can be brought into correspondence
- 3:21without inward struggle is mistaken.
- 3:25Times of trial are the means for getting
- 3:27rid of evil and falsity and replacing
- 3:30[music] them with goodness and truth.
- 3:33Renee Passero had already glimpsed more
- 3:36spiritual truth than most
- 3:38and at 16, in the middle of this new
- 3:41medical crisis she was about to [music]
- 3:43see them fully.
- 3:56>> Renee was barely conscious. She heard
- 3:58her friend calling to her, shouting,
- 4:00"Renee, don't die. Don't die."
- 4:03Weak, overwhelmed,
- 4:06Renee surrendered.
- 4:08She entered a state of peacefulness.
- 4:12She became a ball of light and energy
- 4:15hovering in the crowd around her body.
- 4:18She could feel everything. Every feeling
- 4:21that everyone around her was feeling.
- 4:23She knew what her mother, her neighbors,
- 4:25her friends, and the firemen were
- 4:27feeling.
- 4:28And she felt it, too.
- 4:31She felt so alive, so peaceful.
- 4:35Why was everyone so sad?
- 4:37Suddenly, she was bumped up higher,
- 4:40floating above the scene of her death.
- 4:42She felt sad for the people below her
- 4:44and tried to tell them she was okay.
- 4:48But she was light and energy. She had no
- 4:50body, no mouth to communicate with.
- 4:54There was nothing she could do.
- 4:56So she turned away, floating farther and
- 4:59farther away until she could see the
- 5:01whole Earth.
- 5:04But at the same time, she could see
- 5:06every detail, every being [music] and
- 5:08molecule on the Earth.
- 5:11And she realized the Earth was singing.
- 5:15Everything on it, every living being
- 5:17>> [music]
- 5:17>> had a note to sing.
- 5:20All life was part of the song with a
- 5:22unique tone to contribute.
- 5:26>> At this point,
- 5:28I became so enchanted that I was beyond
- 5:32being, I think, a self.
- 5:35I simply
- 5:36>> [music]
- 5:36>> was, and it was as if I were singing my
- 5:39own note
- 5:40>> [music]
- 5:40>> in this grand symphony
- 5:43of life and existence that's the Earth
- 5:45and all of us.
- 5:47And I began to sing I am, and it was not
- 5:51a statement of ego or self. It was
- 5:53really a statement of absolute love that
- 5:58that by my being I simply was expressing
- 6:01absolute love and connectedness and
- 6:04unity and harmony with all of existence.
- 6:08And I was adding
- 6:09my particular and absolutely unique note
- 6:13to this grand
- 6:14song of life that reverberated
- 6:16throughout all existence.
- 6:19>> Swedenborg would agree. He described
- 6:22heaven as a grand human.
- 6:24One united being where every individual
- 6:28plays a crucial role within.
- 6:32Heaven, taken in a single all-inclusive
- 6:35grasp, reflects a single individual.
- 6:39People who love to do good to others,
- 6:41not for self-centered reasons, but for
- 6:43the sake of the good itself, are in the
- 6:46universal human, that is, in heaven.
- 6:50As Renee absorbed this new awareness,
- 6:52she began to feel an irresistible,
- 6:55almost magnetic pull from a radiant,
- 6:58beautiful light.
- 7:00She didn't resist.
- 7:14The light drew her to a tunnel,
- 7:17a place of transition [music]
- 7:19where she was aware that other beings
- 7:20were there with her.
- 7:22They were moving, but the movement
- 7:24wasn't physical.
- 7:26Renee knew they were moved by love.
- 7:30She was propelled by her connection to
- 7:33and love for God.
- 7:36As she approached the end of the tunnel,
- 7:38she wondered if she'd be alone.
- 7:40Instantly, her uncle Gene appeared.
- 7:43He had passed away about a year and a
- 7:45half before her.
- 7:47She hadn't known him well when he was
- 7:48alive, but their reunion was joyful.
- 7:52And in this world, she knew him better
- 7:53than she ever had,
- 7:55being immediately aware of things about
- 7:57him she'd never known.
- 8:00He was concerned for her mother and
- 8:02confused that she was there, but happy
- 8:04to see her.
- 8:06Again, she felt the pull of the light.
- 8:09She perceived a light past her uncle, a
- 8:12sea of light, sound, and unconditional
- 8:15love.
- 8:17It welcomed her.
- 8:20>> I was being moved through the sea of
- 8:22light on waves of greater and greater
- 8:24and increasing love.
- 8:27Then again, in an instant, like that, I
- 8:30entered the center of the sea of light,
- 8:33which was, to me, the essence of all
- 8:35essences, the source of all sources, the
- 8:38source of all life and all reality and
- 8:40existence.
- 8:42And with the entering into [music] this
- 8:45sun, I can best describe it.
- 8:48It was as if I had become the
- 8:49quintessential phoenix.
- 8:52The entering into this sun really became
- 8:54the the instant of dissolution
- 8:58of self, the dissolving of
- 9:02uh the personal and and separate uh
- 9:05uh
- 9:06>> [music]
- 9:06>> reality that we know to be ourselves.
- 9:09And this state of absolute nothingness
- 9:13as an individual,
- 9:14>> [music]
- 9:14>> but this was a state of being in and of,
- 9:18and because of the light,
- 9:20was, to me, uh
- 9:23the apex
- 9:24>> [music]
- 9:25>> of everything that I could have ever
- 9:26hoped for. It was really the desire of
- 9:29all desires.
- 9:31To be as nothing
- 9:33in this loving and [music]
- 9:35powerful and incredibly beautiful light.
- 9:40It seemed that I existed in that state
- 9:43in that [music] state of nothingness
- 9:45really for a time beyond time. And yet
- 9:49then again, I was gathered together as
- 9:51an individual.
- 9:53It was as if I had become
- 9:56sands upon a shore
- 9:58and I was gathered together and and put
- 10:00back
- 10:01as [music] the individual that I had
- 10:03always known as my own consciousness.
- 10:06>> The same blissful interplay between
- 10:09being [music] a part of the whole and
- 10:11being our own person was articulated by
- 10:13Swedenborg as well.
- 10:15The more closely we are united to the
- 10:18Lord, the more clearly we seem to have
- 10:21our own identity.
- 10:22And yet the more obvious it is to us
- 10:25that we belong to the Lord.
- 10:27Next, Renee entered her life review, a
- 10:31common feature of near-death
- 10:32experiences.
- 10:34She felt loved and cared for as she
- 10:36experienced [music]
- 10:37her life again, but this time from the
- 10:39perspective of everyone involved in each
- 10:42moment simultaneously.
- 10:44She was stunned to learn that what
- 10:46mattered the most were the small acts of
- 10:49kindness. [music]
- 10:51>> But the greatest of all of my actions
- 10:54were those that were motivated by
- 10:56selfless love and the greatest of all of
- 10:58those
- 10:59was as a teenager I had worked with the
- 11:02children every summer and I had taken
- 11:06aside a small a young boy who was
- 11:09particularly difficult
- 11:10>> [music]
- 11:10>> and and particularly
- 11:13obnoxious and abrasive and
- 11:15>> [clears throat]
- 11:16>> and usually rejected by the people in
- 11:18the camp and the children and the
- 11:21counselors and whatnot and I had taken
- 11:22him aside one hot summer day and sat him
- 11:25on a wall
- 11:26and gave him uh
- 11:29uh some punch and uh saying to him
- 11:33and I simply wanted to express to him
- 11:36that he was precious, that he was
- 11:37unique, that he was lovable by the very
- 11:41by his very existence. I wanted really
- 11:44to express
- 11:46>> [music]
- 11:46>> a sense of selfless love to this child
- 11:48who seemed to be uh abandoned and
- 11:51rejected and viewed as worthless to all.
- 11:55This was an action that no one
- 11:57recognized.
- 11:59It was an action that I didn't even
- 12:01remember
- 12:02until uh the near-death experience.
- 12:05But this was [music] to have committed
- 12:07such an action, to have shown love to
- 12:09another individual regardless of their
- 12:13deservingness or or their station or the
- 12:16recognition of of anyone in this world
- 12:19to show for selfless love,
- 12:22just an instant of selfless love in our
- 12:24in our lives, to have done that, to have
- 12:26achieved that, was greater than to have
- 12:29If I had had been become president of
- 12:31the United States or won the Nobel Peace
- 12:34Prize.
- 12:36>> Swedenborg called this reliving of our
- 12:38events [music] our book of life.
- 12:42All our deeds and all our thoughts are
- 12:45written on our whole person
- 12:47>> [music]
- 12:47>> and seem as though they are read from a
- 12:48book when they are called out of our
- 12:50memory.
- 12:52They appear in a kind of image [music]
- 12:53when our spirit is looked at in heaven's
- 12:56light.
- 12:57Swedenborg also placed an emphasis
- 12:59[music]
- 13:00on love. For him, this is our essential
- 13:03quality, the only thing that determines
- 13:05our eternal life. [music]
- 13:08We do need to recognize, though, that
- 13:10volition [music] makes us who we are.
- 13:13Love or intent is the actual person. For
- 13:16the things that come forth belong to the
- 13:18person they come forth from.
- 13:22Renee learned what mattered.
- 13:24But now she wondered, what comes next?
- 13:27For humanity
- 13:28>> [music]
- 13:29>> and for her."
- 13:39Rene pondered the destiny [music] of
- 13:41humanity.
- 13:43In response to her curiosity, she was
- 13:45shown the history of [music] humanity
- 13:48from Neanderthals to ancient Rome to the
- 13:51Renaissance to today.
- 13:53And then, they showed her the future.
- 13:57She was told humanity is on the
- 13:59precipice of our greatest evolution ever
- 14:02in [music] history.
- 14:03But, we must choose this development by
- 14:06choosing to establish peace,
- 14:08unity,
- 14:09>> [music]
- 14:09>> and harmony.
- 14:12The road will be difficult. She saw
- 14:14conflict, confusion, chaos.
- 14:18Humanity was in denial of its true
- 14:20reality,
- 14:21>> [music]
- 14:21>> its interconnectedness.
- 14:23She saw that the suffering caused by
- 14:25this denial would have consequences,
- 14:28much like denying gravity would.
- 14:30But eventually, [music]
- 14:31she saw humanity evolve for the better,
- 14:34become more united, more connected, and
- 14:38more [music] loving.
- 14:39She was shown humanity's rebirth
- 14:42and the divine gift that is life.
- 14:46And now, she would be reborn.
- 14:49She did not want to go back.
- 14:51>> [music]
- 14:51>> She begged to stay as she fell through
- 14:53the tunnel.
- 14:55She heard the first responders saying,
- 14:57"DOA, DOA."
- 15:00Dead on arrival.
- 15:02They believed her gone.
- 15:04She felt the devastation of her mother.
- 15:07She watched from above as her body was
- 15:09moved to the hospital, her mother
- 15:11following close behind.
- 15:14A doctor arrived to work on her, but she
- 15:16perceived his state and felt his
- 15:19disconnection.
- 15:21He had just been working to save people
- 15:22who had been in motorcycle accidents in
- 15:24the mountains.
- 15:26He was exhausted and sure that she was
- 15:29dead.
- 15:30>> [music]
- 15:30>> He didn't care about her or show any
- 15:32affection. He just sent her to the
- 15:34morgue.
- 15:36Just then, her personal physician
- 15:39arrived.
- 15:40He was a gruff country doctor. [music]
- 15:42Renee described him as feisty,
- 15:45foul-mouthed, and good-hearted.
- 15:47He was appalled that they had pronounced
- 15:49Renee dead.
- 15:50>> [music]
- 15:50>> He ordered the nurse to retrieve him
- 15:52adrenaline and assist him
- 15:54and immediately began chest compressions
- 15:56on Renee's body.
- 15:58He administered shocks to restart her
- 16:00heart.
- 16:02Eventually, [music]
- 16:03his treatment worked.
- 16:05Renee finally returned [music] to her
- 16:07body.
- 16:09>> The next morning when my personal
- 16:11physician came in, he was furious. He
- 16:14was absolutely livid. He had thought
- 16:16that I had
- 16:18had a drink [music]
- 16:19or something that I had taken
- 16:22being a foolish young teenager, I had
- 16:24had a beer or something after taking
- 16:27antihistamine and that's what it brought
- 16:29on this uh
- 16:31tremendous uh shock reaction. So, he
- 16:33came
- 16:34bursting into my room that morning and
- 16:36he said, "What the hell did you do to
- 16:38yourself?"
- 16:40And I said, I immediately I had been a
- 16:42very rather normal, timid 16-year-old
- 16:46[music]
- 16:46girl, but then I responded right back to
- 16:49him and said, "What the hell did you do
- 16:51to me? Who do you think you are?"
- 16:54>> [music]
- 16:55>> I said, "I was dead. I was dead and you
- 16:58brought me back. Who do you think you
- 17:00are to do that to me?"
- 17:03>> Shocked by her distressed reaction, her
- 17:05doctor called for a psychiatrist to come
- 17:08speak with her.
- 17:10The psychiatrist knew Renee did not want
- 17:12to live, but she didn't understand why.
- 17:16Renee realized that a full explanation
- 17:18was the only thing that would keep her
- 17:19out of the psych ward.
- 17:21So, she explained everything she had
- 17:23seen in her NDE.
- 17:26She told her about heaven and the love
- 17:28there.
- 17:29But, the psychiatrist was more
- 17:30interested in the details of what
- 17:31happened in the ER.
- 17:34Renee told her everything. The first
- 17:35responders, the doctors exhausted from
- 17:38helping motorcycle victims, her own
- 17:40doctor showing up and barking orders,
- 17:42then finally reviving her.
- 17:45The psychiatrist told Renee she was
- 17:46going to investigate the details.
- 17:50She returned a few hours later,
- 17:52pale and subdued.
- 17:54Everything Renee had told her was true.
- 17:58The details were stunning. The blonde
- 18:00nurse, the dark-haired nurse, the young
- 18:02exhausted doctor, the possibility of an
- 18:05adrenaline shot, all confirmed. [music]
- 18:08The psychiatrist was at a loss.
- 18:11She suggested Renee speak to someone in
- 18:13the clergy about what she had seen,
- 18:16or else never talk about it again, even
- 18:18with people she knew.
- 18:21Swedenborg would have understood why her
- 18:23return was so devastating.
- 18:25Heaven isn't a distant place that we go
- 18:27after death. [music]
- 18:28It's a state that we carry within us.
- 18:31And once you've felt it fully, the loss
- 18:34[music] is real.
- 18:36Heaven is within us, and people who have
- 18:39heaven within them come into heaven.
- 18:41The heaven within us is our
- 18:43acknowledgement of the divine and our
- 18:45being led by the divine.
- 18:50>> [music]
- 18:54>> Luckily, Renee Pessaro did not heed the
- 18:57psychiatrist's advice. She shared her
- 18:59story with millions in teachings and in
- 19:02a book she published in 2018, [music]
- 19:05Answers from Heaven, The Near-Death
- 19:07Experiences of Renee Pessaro.
- 19:10She recovered from her near-death
- 19:11illness and lived a long and happy life.
- 19:14She passed away at 70 years old in
- 19:17January of 2020. She was a wife, a mom
- 19:20to five children, grandmother to four
- 19:22more, and great-grandmother to another
- 19:24two.
- 19:25She founded and directed several
- 19:27charitable organizations and projects
- 19:29[music] and was a devout member of the
- 19:31Baha'i Faith and community.
- 19:33Renee spent her [music] life putting
- 19:35what she had learned into practice.
- 19:39Swedenborg [music] taught that the
- 19:40spiritual world and the natural world
- 19:42are united through us.
- 19:44We are the bridge between them.
- 19:46And the bridge is [music] built from
- 19:48love expressed in action.
- 19:52Our acts are services in forms to the
- 19:54extent that we live according to the
- 19:56divine design
- 19:58>> [music]
- 19:58>> in love for the Lord and in
- 19:59thoughtfulness toward our neighbor.
- 20:02It is humankind through which the
- 20:04natural world is united to the spiritual
- 20:06world. We are the means of the union.
- 20:10Renee is now presumably in the place she
- 20:13described, still the embodiment of
- 20:16peace, unity, and love.
- 20:20>> Every action
- 20:22that one takes is like a stone cast in
- 20:25the water.
- 20:27And if it's [music] loving,
- 20:28that stone, you know, is cast in the
- 20:31water and the loving action goes [music]
- 20:33out and touches the first person that
- 20:35it's intended for, and then it touches
- 20:38another person, and then it touches
- 20:39another person because [music] that
- 20:41person interacts with other people, and
- 20:44so on and so on. And every action has a
- 20:47reverberating effect upon every single
- 20:51one of us on the face of this planet.
- 20:54>> What you love and why is the only thing
- 20:58the universe is [music] measuring.
