16 Golf Tips That Are Totally WRONG (Myth Busting with Dr. Luke) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Today we are busting golf instruction
- 0:02myths during a lesson with Dr. Luke
- 0:04Benois. Should you keep your lead arm
- 0:06straight? Should you train speed only
- 0:07after you fix your golf swing? Do you
- 0:09need a perfect alignment practice
- 0:10station when you practice all these best
- 0:12practices that we've heard and we
- 0:13thought that we should be doing? They
- 0:15might be wrong. Let's get into it. All
- 0:18right. You should swing your swing every
- 0:20time. Myth or truth?
- 0:21Total myth. Especially when you're
- 0:22young, you want to learn how to swing a
- 0:24lot of different ways, build that skill
- 0:26base, be able to hit balls from any
- 0:28position. the kid that can play hockey
- 0:29and hit a ball here, here, here, here,
- 0:31here, is gonna be able to hit it more
- 0:32solid. So, it's okay to practice wild
- 0:34drills when you're young. And then when
- 0:35it comes to using different clubs, Yeah.
- 0:37they're also very different swings,
- 0:38aren't they?
- 0:38Yep. They are. They are. So, when
- 0:40anytime somebody says, "Swing your
- 0:41driver the same way you swing all your
- 0:43other club," they know what I'm talking
- 0:44about.
- 0:44If you're hitting down 5 degrees in your
- 0:45driver, how's it going?
- 0:46Yeah. All right. Myth busted. Don't
- 0:48swing the same way every time.
- 0:51That was it. That was shanked.
- 0:53That was pretty good. Okay. You shanked
- 0:54it. You were standing too close to the
- 0:56golf ball. You got to move back. Yeah.
- 0:58Okay. So, I got to tell you a lesson.
- 0:59First first uh year teaching. Okay. I
- 1:01had this guy that was like this pretty
- 1:03close to the ball. Shanking it. I had
- 1:05him move further away. Still shanking.
- 1:06Still shanking.
- 1:08Still shanking it. I had him here and he
- 1:10was still shanking it.
- 1:11He's really good. That is impressive.
- 1:12So then I started thinking about like is
- 1:14impact location more of a skill. Yeah.
- 1:16Or is it a byproduct of like mechanical
- 1:19stuff going on? Could I fix the shank by
- 1:22abducting my left hip and getting really
- 1:24deep and like feeling my chest go away?
- 1:26all these internal cues. Could I do
- 1:28that?
- 1:29Yes. But it's a dual task. I got to
- 1:31think about that and also hit the toe. Y
- 1:33Okay. So, I'm going to go to now like if
- 1:34I'm coaching my 8-year-old T-ball team
- 1:36where every single time, what does he
- 1:37do? He just hits the tea and the ball
- 1:39falls to the ground. What would you tell
- 1:40the 8-year-old
- 1:41to like swing over top of the ball?
- 1:43You know what? It works really well.
- 1:44Yeah.
- 1:44And that's how we're built to operate.
- 1:46Okay.
- 1:46So, solve the problem by using an
- 1:48external queue and not going to internal
- 1:50cues. So, whether you're 8 or whatever,
- 1:52do opposite. So, here would be a drill
- 1:54to fix impact and go like this.
- 1:58Huh.
- 1:58How hard is that? Yeah.
- 2:00That hard?
- 2:01No.
- 2:01Simple.
- 2:02Yeah.
- 2:02So, now I'm going to see if I can tow
- 2:03shank it. All right. So, I'm starting
- 2:05here.
- 2:06Oh, that's good, too.
- 2:07So, if I can heel shank it and toe shank
- 2:10it, guess what? Middlef face piece of
- 2:11cake.
- 2:12That's a myth busted.
- 2:16All right, Luke. Should I fix my swing
- 2:18before I speed train?
- 2:19Absolutely not. If it's hard for you to
- 2:21do it at full speed on the back swing,
- 2:23do some freezers. Set the table properly
- 2:25and then just go bat out of hell.
- 2:27So, should we play one shot shape? Luke,
- 2:29I'm only going to hit fades all day
- 2:32every shot. Or should I not? What's
- 2:34What's the decision?
- 2:35Absolutely not.
- 2:36Okay, this is controversial.
- 2:37It's really controversial for a lot of
- 2:38developing golfers. Like, they need to
- 2:40learn the skills to shot shape because
- 2:42you need to be able to recall it when
- 2:44the situation calls for it. Like you're
- 2:45at Augusta number 10
- 2:47and you don't have a draw down the hill.
- 2:48It's a huge disadvantage. You watch the
- 2:50guys that are kind of I call black and
- 2:52white thinkers that only hit fades. They
- 2:53struggle in that T- shot. So you're
- 2:55always doing the math. Is it costing me
- 2:57to do it because I'm uncomfortable and I
- 2:59can't pull it off
- 3:00more than what the advantages are of the
- 3:02actual strategic advantage.
- 3:04Let me double down on this.
- 3:05Yes.
- 3:06Can I hit it straight then? Or is that
- 3:08going to max there's going to be more
- 3:09misses because I'm trying to hit it
- 3:10straight versus one shot?
- 3:11Of course not. Is a straight shot easy?
- 3:12No. Yeah,
- 3:13hitting it dead straight with no curve
- 3:14is very hard.
- 3:16But what's your ideal? Are we talking
- 3:188.2 yards of curve? That's really hard,
- 3:20too.
- 3:20So, there's no ideal shot. To say that a
- 3:23straight shot is harder than any curve
- 3:24is ridiculous. Is it nice
- 3:26psychologically to maybe have some curve
- 3:27on it? Sure, you could argue that. If
- 3:29you turn your brain into a black and
- 3:30white thinker where like I'm just going
- 3:31to hit the same shot every time, guess
- 3:33what? You won't be able to kind of grow
- 3:34your game and develop those skills for
- 3:36when you need them. People that think
- 3:38that way struggle with bias more
- 3:40because they don't understand ball
- 3:41flight. So then they come back for a
- 3:42lesson, which is great for the pro, but
- 3:44oh, it's leaking right today. How do I
- 3:46fix it? For the people that are good at
- 3:48curving it and understand ball flight,
- 3:49they don't have those lessons.
- 3:50Got it. So give us an idea of like how
- 3:51do I master this skill then? Or what is
- 3:53the skill I need to learn?
- 3:54Right. So first of all, just because
- 3:55you're curving it doesn't mean you have
- 3:57to have your body all over the place to
- 4:00create the shot. So when I was young and
- 4:01probably when you were young, like you
- 4:02learned how to hook it doing this. Y
- 4:05Okay. So I want you to pretend you're
- 4:06more of a robot to do it and change your
- 4:08alignment.
- 4:09So that's your straight shot setup. Y
- 4:11does make sense.
- 4:12Now, for a fade, I want you to pretend
- 4:14you're hitting a straight shot through
- 4:15my legs here.
- 4:16Dead straight.
- 4:17Y
- 4:17Okay. Now, all you're going to do is
- 4:19open the face a little bit and then
- 4:21regrip it so it feels normal. All you
- 4:23have to do theoretically from there is
- 4:25do your exact same swing and the ball's
- 4:27going to curve left to right. You don't
- 4:28need to have all this athletic stuff to
- 4:30do it.
- 4:30Got it. Cuz when growing up, like you
- 4:32said, it was like, "Okay, so if I'm
- 4:33going to fade, I'm going to put towards
- 4:34the front. I'm going to kind of put my
- 4:36shoulders over here and kind of open it
- 4:37up and swing and, you know, swing this
- 4:39way." So you're saying let's lose all
- 4:41that. Let's we got to just same swing
- 4:43now. We're just going to move and then
- 4:45open.
- 4:45And if you train that as a skill of your
- 4:47setup, it's pretty doable. But we don't
- 4:49need to be like crazy athletes and feel
- 4:51like we're doing this to hook it.
- 4:52Right. The other cool thing about like
- 4:54working on this and this is a skill is
- 4:55you learn about aim. You learn about
- 4:57club face control. You learn about path.
- 4:59And you gain some awareness of all these
- 5:00things by experimenting on the range
- 5:02with this.
- 5:03A lot of people are afraid to get dirty
- 5:04with the learning. And they they like
- 5:05they think the goal is to hit good shots
- 5:07in the range. No, it's like to learn.
- 5:09And that's what I see that's so
- 5:10different about zero handicaps and tens
- 5:12is tens are so bad adjusting to feedback
- 5:14of shots and understanding how to fix it
- 5:16when it goes left, right, thin, fat.
- 5:18They don't do that well. Zeros are
- 5:20really good at it.
- 5:21Got it.
- 5:23Myth busted.
- 5:23Nice.
- 5:24So, I've always heard you never work on
- 5:26mechanics on the golf course. You got to
- 5:28come to the range because I'm trying to
- 5:30fix my back swing and do this on the
- 5:32range, right?
- 5:32Yeah.
- 5:33Truth or myth? You know what I would
- 5:35have said differently when I started my
- 5:37career, but at this point I think your
- 5:39best option is actually not do it at the
- 5:41range. Do it at home with really good
- 5:43video and learn how to do it on a
- 5:45practice swing and on a foam ball and
- 5:47then you can start going to the real
- 5:48ball. And more people now understand
- 5:50what is P55, where does a club need to
- 5:52be? And especially as people start
- 5:53taking online lessons, they realize the
- 5:55value. And I it's unbelievable that I
- 5:58feel like my online students do better
- 5:59than my in-person students.
- 6:01The golf ball ruins everything as soon
- 6:02as you hit it. Good or bad? That's means
- 6:04how well you did that golf swing.
- 6:06Exactly. They can't go hit this golf
- 6:07ball until the the practice swings and
- 6:10the foam balls look perfect.
- 6:11Give us the the 302 sevenstep framework
- 6:15pitch as fast as you can. The speedrun
- 6:17of how to
- 6:17learn how to do a pivot because if you
- 6:19don't have a good pivot, you're building
- 6:20your whole swing in a house of cards.
- 6:22Okay. Number two is learn how to do a
- 6:23freezer from the top making a really
- 6:26good down swing with a lot of speed.
- 6:28Because if you can get a good sequence
- 6:30from there, you learn learn how to do
- 6:31the down swing first. Because we hit the
- 6:32ball with the down swing, that matters
- 6:34more. The third step is going to be a
- 6:35smoothie, which is where you go slow.
- 6:37You go slow enough to make it look
- 6:39perfect
- 6:41and then attach your down swing. Because
- 6:42if you can do the smoothie pretty fast
- 6:44and look really good, now you're
- 6:46starting to combine that that back swing
- 6:49with a really functional down swing.
- 6:51Next, you take it to the foam ball. You
- 6:53do the exact same thing. Freezer
- 6:54smoothie, then real ball, freezer
- 6:56smoothie. Seven steps and the swing will
- 6:58look awesome.
- 6:58Love it. This is huge. If you want to
- 7:00actually change your golf swing, you
- 7:02have to do this. You have to get rid of
- 7:03the golf ball and go through this
- 7:04process. And uh yeah, no more mechanics
- 7:06on the range. We're going to do it at
- 7:08home. Myth.
- 7:15[Music]
- 7:17All right, Luke. Every time I practice,
- 7:19I'm in a perfect setup. Look at where
- 7:22the ball's in my stance. Perfect line. I
- 7:24al line directly and then it's good
- 7:26practice if I do all those things.
- 7:28I think setup's really overrated. Okay.
- 7:30Particularly with short game, you need
- 7:31to be an athlete and be able to hit hit
- 7:33balls in different ways. Like who are
- 7:34the best athletes that pick up the game
- 7:36and pick it up fast? Who are they?
- 7:37Hockey players are very good.
- 7:39We know that here in Minnesota
- 7:40cuz they can hit it from here, here,
- 7:42here. And so like when I train junior
- 7:43golf, like I do this drill where I'll
- 7:45have them set up and we call it the
- 7:47seven ball drill. I think we even did
- 7:48this one time, Cordy, but I like to
- 7:50remind people like I should be able to
- 7:53stand right here and I should be able to
- 7:55hit all these balls. Even if they're not
- 7:57great shots, I'm building a lot of hand
- 7:59eye as I do this drill.
- 8:03Wow.
- 8:03And somebody who does this sort of
- 8:04drill, these are really tight.
- 8:08But a challenge there. You've got to
- 8:10move this around, right? Like
- 8:11you got to be able to hit different
- 8:12shots.
- 8:12Yeah, we're doing all this different
- 8:13stuff. Okay. What how would you define
- 8:15the skill? What do we call the skill of
- 8:16this? So, what we're trying to do is be
- 8:18able to hit the ball solid in center
- 8:19contact, right? Using a small club head
- 8:21is one way to do it, but just adding a
- 8:23lot of variability. If you imagine how
- 8:25your how your kids, 5-year-olds,
- 8:278-year-olds, how do they want to train?
- 8:29They want to do all the crazy shots
- 8:31wide. That's how our brains are wired to
- 8:32learn.
- 8:33Y
- 8:33and by pushing the envelope of kind of
- 8:35that environment, we actually learn
- 8:37faster. But we don't think we're doing
- 8:39as well because we don't hit it as
- 8:40solid.
- 8:41So, adults think, "Oh, I'm learning if I
- 8:43hit it solid."
- 8:44Kids just want to go explore their
- 8:45environment, get better. Yep. I think
- 8:47that's a myth. I'll I'll piggyback on
- 8:48this. Another myth is that uh learning
- 8:51comes from mistakes and making errors,
- 8:52right? We all think learning comes from
- 8:54when I hit it pure, that I've learned
- 8:55something. It's actually not. It's it's
- 8:57the opposite of that.
- 8:58And you can start with any ball you
- 8:59want.
- 8:59And I don't move my feet.
- 9:00No.
- 9:01Okay.
- 9:03Okay. I hit it solid.
- 9:04Yep.
- 9:06That's okay. One of them just got really
- 9:09hard now way back there.
- 9:13Okay. Sorry, interlocking for your turf.
- 9:15I will fix my divots. I promise.
- 9:19Oh man.
- 9:19Oh my gosh. It's getting really hard.
- 9:21You're going to have to go between your
- 9:22legs. There you go.
- 9:27Yes.
- 9:28Ah, this is hard.
- 9:29It's really hard.
- 9:29That's really hard.
- 9:30You know how like in golf our goal is
- 9:31like hit the ball relatively straight
- 9:33the same shot, right? So he does this
- 9:35with volleyball players. It's a really
- 9:36good example of
- 9:37in volleyball you want to hit the ball
- 9:39and you want the ball to come up with no
- 9:41spin because it's a knuckle ball. Okay.
- 9:42All right. So he taught people to do it
- 9:44with lots of sid spin.
- 9:46Okay.
- 9:46And he had one group just do knuckle
- 9:48balls all the time. Well, the people
- 9:49that learned sid spin were actually
- 9:51better at no spin, too.
- 9:53Interesting.
- 9:53So, we broadened the whole skill base
- 9:55and we do shots with different setups
- 9:57where you're aiming way right, way left,
- 9:59ball forward, ball back, especially when
- 10:01you're young and developing talent.
- 10:03Yeah.
- 10:03It's really helpful long term.
- 10:05I love it. I like, you know, good
- 10:07practice when you go do it again. I want
- 10:08to do that again because I feel like I
- 10:09sucked and I can do better next time.
- 10:11That actually is good practice. So,
- 10:12yep,
- 10:12try it out. Try instead of just hate
- 10:14commenting down below, maybe go try it.
- 10:16How about that? All right, Luke. So,
- 10:17when I'm practicing, I'm going to make
- 10:18sure I go through my full routine
- 10:20exactly like I would on the golf course.
- 10:25Truth or myth?
- 10:26Total myth.
- 10:27Okay.
- 10:27Yeah. Let's say you were training for
- 10:29professional ping pong.
- 10:30Okay.
- 10:31And you got to hit one ping pong ball
- 10:32every minute because you got to go
- 10:33through your full routine and a ball
- 10:35machine's feeding you. Okay.
- 10:36Okay.
- 10:37How many balls would you hit? Not very
- 10:39many. Not very many. Right. What if it's
- 10:40coming every half second?
- 10:41You'd hit a lot.
- 10:42And how good are you gonna get with your
- 10:43contact?
- 10:45Probably better because I got to react
- 10:46fast and I got to figure it out as I go,
- 10:48right?
- 10:48What do you notice when your 5-year-old
- 10:49practices? How do they practice?
- 10:51We're hitting. We're going. We're
- 10:52moving. I don't They They got to keep
- 10:54going. They can't sit.
- 10:55You know what the funny thing is? Our
- 10:56machinery is developed to learn fast.
- 10:58And 5-year-olds do it well. So, let's
- 11:00say you're one of those golfers where
- 11:02you flush it every time
- 11:03and your deal is like mental or you
- 11:06can't take it to the course,
- 11:07then you should do a lot of deliberate
- 11:09practice to make it feel more like that.
- 11:11Okay? But let's say you actually misit
- 11:13it a lot and you don't control the face
- 11:15very well. You should probably switch
- 11:16targets a lot and practice a lot faster
- 11:19as a proportion of your practice. All
- 11:20right? So, what we're going to do is
- 11:21we're going to switch I'm going to put
- 11:22them in a line. So, it's a little bit of
- 11:24a rapid fire drill here, but I'm going
- 11:25to have you switch targets. And you
- 11:27know, if you look out here, we have two
- 11:29flags, but I'm going to throw I want you
- 11:31to actually try to land one in the
- 11:32bucket, too. So, we got left flag, right
- 11:34flag, bucket, and then hit one on this
- 11:36manhole cover, too.
- 11:37Okay.
- 11:37That way, we're switching up our targets
- 11:39a lot.
- 11:39And you're just going to go down the
- 11:41line, and you got to have a ball in the
- 11:43air every 8 seconds.
- 11:44Okay. So, I'm just going to hit and go.
- 11:46Yeah. No practice. This is weird.
- 11:48See the target, hit the shot.
- 11:51All right. Bucket.
- 11:55Okay. No, you're doing great.
- 11:58All right, manhole cover.
- 12:00Good. God, that's
- 12:01okay. Now, we're going to do it again.
- 12:02And now I want you to go high shot, low
- 12:04shot, high shot, low shot as you're
- 12:06doing the same drill.
- 12:06Okay.
- 12:08Okay. Low shot to the bucket.
- 12:14All right. High shot to that one.
- 12:19Low shot to the manhole cover. Go ahead.
- 12:22That was pretty good.
- 12:22That was good. Wow. manhole cover.
- 12:26First thing would be, is your
- 12:27performance as good going that fast?
- 12:29Probably not.
- 12:30Yeah.
- 12:30But there's a trade-off over reps. So,
- 12:32you're getting so many more reps. You're
- 12:34gonna hit so many more shots. And even
- 12:36if you're maybe 80 to 90% successful or
- 12:39even 50%, you're learning more. If you
- 12:41want to get in on this research, RIP
- 12:43research, we got about 15 people that
- 12:44are going to help collect research. It's
- 12:46a volunteer which can be part of a
- 12:47really cool study. We're going to
- 12:48investigate this.
- 12:49Got it. I love it. What a fun one. Myth
- 12:51busted, maybe. I think
- 12:53maybe. How's that? All right. So, in
- 12:56chipping, I either got to decide, am I
- 12:58going to be steep
- 13:00with my chips or am I going to be more
- 13:04shallow?
- 13:06How is that? Can I do shallow?
- 13:07That was your best one.
- 13:08Okay, there we go.
- 13:08Yeah,
- 13:09I got to choose one of those of what
- 13:10like methodology you want to go down.
- 13:12You can you can do both. Even if we are
- 13:13steep, is it okay to hit the ground a
- 13:15little before the ball sometimes? What
- 13:16does the ping data tell you? Cuz you
- 13:17were out there talking.
- 13:18So, when you hit the ground, the ground
- 13:19obviously bounces the club back up. So
- 13:21sometimes the attack angle that we read
- 13:22on a launch monitor is changed from the
- 13:26ground push it pushed back up. So a 13
- 13:28down could go to a zero based on if you
- 13:30hit it fat, which
- 13:31I think it was 87% of people or 87% of
- 13:34shots are hit behind the ball like
- 13:35they're not hitting
- 13:36crazy high percentage. Yeah. And
- 13:37particularly if you're on a downgrain
- 13:38bent, it's much better to hit behind it
- 13:41because frankly if you do, it'll still
- 13:43work. Big takeaway is to know your lie
- 13:44and have different shots. Like if you
- 13:46want to hit down on it and you've got
- 13:48more attack angle and you've got an open
- 13:50face, that's probably going to be better
- 13:52out of um kind of an into grain lie
- 13:54where you're trying to hit ball first.
- 13:56Y
- 13:56and then there's times where it's pretty
- 13:57fluffy and you want height. Then you
- 13:59want to feel like you're uh kind of
- 14:01sweeping up on it much higher attack
- 14:03angle.
- 14:03Yep. Don't choose one.
- 14:04Yeah.
- 14:05Try both and then choose situationally
- 14:07which one are you going to use.
- 14:08Just like most things, don't be black
- 14:09and white. Have them all. Y
- 14:11love it, man.
- 14:17[Music]
- 14:22There it is. You lifted your head, Luke.
- 14:24I know you did it.
- 14:25I topped the ball. Therefore, I must
- 14:26have lifted my head. Right.
- 14:28Truth or myth?
- 14:29Total myth. Watch. I'm going to lift my
- 14:31head. I'm going to early extend.
- 14:34And I flushed it.
- 14:35Hit it fine.
- 14:35You can do a lot of things and hit a
- 14:37solid. Yep.
- 14:37It's like it doesn't need to be just cuz
- 14:39I lift my head, I'm going to top it
- 14:40every time.
- 14:41Myth.
- 14:41Yeah.
- 14:43I have this bucket of balls and I'm just
- 14:45going to groove my swing here
- 14:48just to one target. Truth or myth?
- 14:50How often do you hit the exact same shot
- 14:51on the golf course?
- 14:52Not often.
- 14:53Unless it's OB, you're not doing it.
- 14:54Okay.
- 14:54So, if you're doing block practice like
- 14:56that where you're working on mechanics
- 14:57and you're doing some hard skill, have
- 14:59video set up and then it's okay to hit
- 15:01to one target. But if you're getting
- 15:02ready for a tournament or actually like
- 15:03practical golf, switch targets every
- 15:05time. Make it weird because the more you
- 15:08challenge yourself and practice, the
- 15:09more adaptable and transferable the
- 15:11skill will be. Got it. Myth busted.
- 15:18[Music]
- 15:22All right, Luke. So, I got my practice
- 15:23station set up here. I got my alignment
- 15:25sticks perfectly set up. And this is the
- 15:28way that I should practice is alignment
- 15:29sticks, you know, as much as possible to
- 15:31make sure my fundamentals are right.
- 15:33Mhm.
- 15:33Truth or myth.
- 15:34It's overrated.
- 15:35Don't do this to me, Luke. It's not.
- 15:37Everybody needs alignment sticks.
- 15:39You know what? You have to have good
- 15:40aim, but alignment can be variable based
- 15:43on you.
- 15:44And so if you were to practice without
- 15:46alignment rods all the time, Yeah.
- 15:48and you basically switched targets and
- 15:49you played for money
- 15:51against other people and competed, you
- 15:52think you would learn how to aim your
- 15:54golf ball?
- 15:54I' I'd probably have to figure it out.
- 15:56Yes. So, if we take you to a deserted
- 15:59island and you have an unlimited supply
- 16:01of golf balls
- 16:02and your task every day is to hit good
- 16:04shots out of this bucket of golf balls
- 16:06and you get rewards by landing it on a
- 16:08target
- 16:09and you're giving no instructions except
- 16:11for maybe a decent golf grip.
- 16:13Okay.
- 16:14And you had this boring spot on this
- 16:17island where all you get to do is hit
- 16:19balls and you get rewards. How much do
- 16:21you think you'd practice?
- 16:22A lot.
- 16:22A lot. Yeah.
- 16:23Constantly. And how good would you get
- 16:25at aiming?
- 16:26Really good.
- 16:27How good would your alignment be?
- 16:29Oh, nobody ever told you. I don't know
- 16:31how good it would be. It'd be
- 16:32functional.
- 16:33I bet you'd have people aiming like
- 16:34this.
- 16:35Yeah.
- 16:35And like this cuz they don't have
- 16:37sticks. They don't even know how to
- 16:38throw them down.
- 16:39They just want to get the ball over
- 16:40there.
- 16:40Yes. Yeah.
- 16:41So now I'm going to go like LeBron
- 16:42James. Do you see his three-pointers?
- 16:44It's like this. And you get guys like
- 16:46this.
- 16:47Do you think to hit a good jump shot you
- 16:49have to have your feet in the same spot?
- 16:51No. Probably
- 16:52see a huge variance.
- 16:52Yeah. So, we're kind of blinded into
- 16:54thinking like square really matters.
- 16:56Yep.
- 16:57It's just a standard.
- 16:58Yep. Okay. But what about like the idea
- 17:00of okay, if I'm moving the ball position
- 17:02and my aim around, then I got to change
- 17:04my swing every time of my low point and
- 17:07like all that stuff.
- 17:08Yeah. I think especially if you're
- 17:09playing a lot of tournament golf, you
- 17:10probably want a pretty consistent ball
- 17:12position.
- 17:12Um, but the truth is having your feet
- 17:14aimed at the target is not as important
- 17:16as having your dispersion pattern
- 17:18centered.
- 17:19Got it.
- 17:19You got to hit the ball at your target.
- 17:20Define that for us quick. Think about
- 17:21Freddy Coules aiming left or some good
- 17:23players aiming way over to the right
- 17:25like Victor Havland.
- 17:26Again, they can hit it at the target.
- 17:28The dispersion pattern works,
- 17:30but their biomechanics are such that
- 17:32they don't have to have their feet
- 17:33square.
- 17:33Got it?
- 17:33So, what you should do is practice
- 17:35different targets. And the outcome of
- 17:37that is that you will get good at aim.
- 17:38And then if you want to have a standard
- 17:40home base to go back to, you can.
- 17:42Yeah.
- 17:42But the truth is it's probably
- 17:44overrated. So maybe what people should
- 17:46do is get some balls, aim at a target,
- 17:48don't use any sticks,
- 17:50and see what allows you to hit the most
- 17:52balls closest to your target
- 17:54and then see then put sticks down and
- 17:56see where you are aimed potentially.
- 17:58And if you want to deep dive on why
- 17:59alignment might change, you definitely
- 18:01could. Like if you want to get the low
- 18:02point more forward, play with a more
- 18:03open stance, tilt your chest more here,
- 18:05right?
- 18:06So there's things you could change in
- 18:07your swing, but your alignment shouldn't
- 18:08be just like
- 18:10it doesn't need to be cookie cutter for
- 18:11everybody square.
- 18:12Got it.
- 18:12Yeah.
- 18:13All right. There's another one. Another
- 18:15one.
- 18:16Okay. If I want to work the golf ball, I
- 18:17need a blade.
- 18:18Maybe not butter blades all throughout
- 18:20the set, but I need a blade versus a
- 18:22cavity back like you got there.
- 18:23Yeah.
- 18:23Truth or myth?
- 18:24It's mostly myth.
- 18:25Okay.
- 18:25Okay. There's a tiny bit of truth to it,
- 18:27but it's so small you shouldn't consider
- 18:29it.
- 18:29Like if you wanted to lean the the face
- 18:32forward like this, you'd hit the ball a
- 18:33little higher in the face and your
- 18:35vertical gear effect would basically
- 18:37like reduce your spin more on a blade by
- 18:39a tiny margin.
- 18:40Okay.
- 18:41Okay. But from a practical standpoint,
- 18:43path and face are going to be the
- 18:45overwhelming thing. And you're not going
- 18:47to intentionally mishit the the club
- 18:48very often. So yes, when you hit on the
- 18:50toe, they hook a little more. When you
- 18:51hit the heel, they they fade a little
- 18:53more. But the truth is any center
- 18:55strike, regardless of how big the club
- 18:57head is, are pretty much the same sort
- 18:59of dispersion pattern. One one thing we
- 19:01do know is that the smaller club head
- 19:04will actually have because of the center
- 19:05mass is farther away from the shaft, the
- 19:07axis rotation is easier. So smaller
- 19:09clubs are easier to go left. Bigger
- 19:11clubs actually would reduce that. So
- 19:14small factor generally mostly BS.
- 19:17It doesn't really matter about
- 19:18workability.
- 19:19It's a myth. There are some intricacies
- 19:21though to think about.
- 19:22All right. On the back swing, lead arm
- 19:24has to be straight, right?
- 19:26No.
- 19:27No,
- 19:27doesn't matter that much.
- 19:28Okay.
- 19:29There's a lot of variability out there.
- 19:30Who are some of the straightest hitters
- 19:32on tour ever? Some guys bend their left
- 19:33arm a lot. Victor Havlin bends it a lot.
- 19:36Truth is, you just don't want to have it
- 19:37impact your sequence too much. So, if
- 19:39you're one of those golfers where you
- 19:40wrap it around your neck, could be a
- 19:42problem if you're starting to fire with
- 19:44the arms first. There's way too many
- 19:46older golfers that create some power
- 19:48with the bent left arm and they're
- 19:49trying to change it when in fact they
- 19:51should be working on ball flight stuff.
- 19:52Got it. That's a myth. Then that lead
- 19:54arm
- 19:55doesn't matter much.
- 19:56So, I got to hold leg through here,
- 19:58right? More leg the better because leg
- 20:00means power.
- 20:01Yeah. Truth is, if your sequence is good
- 20:04and your club is reasonably shallow,
- 20:07it's really hard to have a cast in your
- 20:09swing.
- 20:10Okay?
- 20:10So, understand how to do a pivot and
- 20:12then understand that if the club is here
- 20:14and you can pivot well from here, you'll
- 20:17have really good shaft length. There are
- 20:18some people where their mobility with
- 20:19the lower body is so poor that one way
- 20:22they can do that is maybe get that elbow
- 20:23to drop in and it feels like they're
- 20:24pulling the handle, but that's a pretty
- 20:26rare lesson because I can usually get
- 20:28the sequence to do the work.
- 20:29Got it. So, myth because work on your
- 20:32sequence, not holding the leg.
- 20:34Yeah.
- 20:34Got it.
- 20:36[Music]
- 20:42If I want to work on my distance
- 20:44control, Luke, I'm going to do the
- 20:45ladder drill here. I got to learn how to
- 20:48land the ball in different corridors to
- 20:51control speed. Yeah,
- 20:53I think it's not a terrible drill, but
- 20:54there's better drills. One is when
- 20:56you're doing the ladder, you're kind of
- 20:57going the same direction all the time. Y
- 21:00and so there's not a whole lot of
- 21:01variability of slope. Number two is
- 21:02sequentially it's not as good as doing
- 21:04random. Number three is not ecological,
- 21:06meaning you're not putting at holes.
- 21:08Okay?
- 21:08And so we should be as ecological as we
- 21:10as we possibly can. And I'd much rather
- 21:12have you aim at different holes and
- 21:13switch targets going up and down hills.
- 21:16So then can you gify that? Can you aim
- 21:18at this hole and say, "Well, from this
- 21:19range, you want to get it past the hole
- 21:22because anything within about 10 15 ft,
- 21:23let's try to get it past the hole."
- 21:25No more than a club length by would be a
- 21:27good goal. And then as you get out to
- 21:28the farther ones, just get it within
- 21:3010%. If you got a 40footer within four
- 21:32four feet,
- 21:33okay? Okay. And from there, you could
- 21:34easily gify the thing,
- 21:35right?
- 21:36Simple game would be if you get it
- 21:37within that 10%, we call it a birdie.
- 21:39Okay.
- 21:39If it's within 20%, call it a par. More
- 21:41than 20%, it's a bogey. You go until you
- 21:44get to five under, five over.
- 21:45This is a level up, not a myth, right? I
- 21:47think leg putting is a skill that
- 21:48everybody is deficient in. I'd say most
- 21:50people are. Uh gosh, what a great game.
- 21:55Ah. All right, Luke. The clock drill has
- 21:58to be a great way to work on my short
- 21:59putting, right?
- 22:00It's not terrible, but you can make it
- 22:01better. Okay,
- 22:02so let's make it better. So, first of
- 22:03all, as you're doing these, you see how
- 22:05close the balls are together?
- 22:06The the putts are pretty similar. Okay,
- 22:08so I did a study with six-year-olds,
- 22:10okay?
- 22:11And I can tell you when six-year-olds
- 22:13putt, if you move them around uphill,
- 22:15downhill, sidehill, and change distance,
- 22:17they will learn much faster.
- 22:19So, we're trying to basically like
- 22:21expedite how quickly you get good at
- 22:23putting. And we need to make every putt
- 22:24feel really different.
- 22:25You know how a lot of instructors will
- 22:27actually start looking at your putting
- 22:28stroke? Yeah,
- 22:29I used to putting stroke and then I
- 22:31found when I got them on some slope and
- 22:34changed the distance and went uphill,
- 22:36downhill, sidehill, they were terrible
- 22:37at speed.
- 22:39Okay, so now I never start putting that
- 22:41way. I get to the most sloped hole on
- 22:42the green and we go around and we do
- 22:44this drill that's kind of a clock drill,
- 22:46but it's a little different.
- 22:47Okay,
- 22:47so we're going to do one club length
- 22:48away, and we're going to rotate 100°.
- 22:50Okay.
- 22:51Okay.
- 22:51And then we're going to rotate 100° and
- 22:53go three club lengths.
- 22:56There you go. And
- 22:56then you're going to go to this one,
- 22:57which is two club lengths.
- 23:02There you go. This one's three.
- 23:11So, lots of different slopes.
- 23:12Lots of different slopes.
- 23:13Uphill, downhill, side,
- 23:16different lengths.
- 23:18And now we're going to talk about the
- 23:19scoring.
- 23:19Okay.
- 23:20So, you get a point if you make it.
- 23:21Okay?
- 23:21And you don't lose a point if your speed
- 23:24is good. So inside of this range, you
- 23:27have to get it to the hole.
- 23:28So nothing short.
- 23:30If you're short, you lose a point. Got
- 23:31it?
- 23:31So the game is the constraint to teach
- 23:33you speed.
- 23:34Okay.
- 23:35And so a good putter will not lose any
- 23:37points by bad having bad speed.
- 23:39Yep.
- 23:39And as a result, you get better at kind
- 23:41of doing uphill, downhill, sidehill,
- 23:43short, medium, long. You're doing a lot
- 23:45of variability with it.
- 23:46And so I would typically go 20 putts at
- 23:49a hole.
- 23:49Okay?
- 23:50And then you go find another hole, do
- 23:51another hole. And if you track it every
- 23:53day, you ever hear of the testing
- 23:54effect? If you go test this
- 23:56and you are trying really hard to get
- 23:57better at this drill and you just are
- 23:59trying to score better and get rid of
- 24:01those misses in terms of long or short,
- 24:04your putting is going to get so much
- 24:05better.
- 24:05Love it. Is there a percent of slope? Do
- 24:07we want to stay on a relatively flat one
- 24:08or are you looking for those 3% slopes
- 24:10of like let's get some?
- 24:11Most golfers are horrible on a lot of
- 24:13slope.
- 24:14So let's go target that first cuz
- 24:16frankly the flat 4footers and 8footers
- 24:19are not the reason you're bad at
- 24:20putting.
- 24:21That's true. It's mostly because you
- 24:22three putt from 13 feet downhill on a
- 24:25real slope putt.
- 24:26Yeah.
- 24:26And you don't you don't really give a
- 24:28good speed, so you don't even even make
- 24:29as many as you should.
- 24:30Got it. All right. It's neither a myth
- 24:32nor a truth. It's a drill upgrade.
- 24:35Yeah,
- 24:35that's what that is.
- 24:36Yeah.
- 24:37That's a power washer as well. I don't
- 24:38know if you guys know that. That's how
- 24:39they That's how they power wash vehicles
- 24:41right there.
- 24:43Neither myth nor truth.
