Full transcript
- 0:00hi friends Zoe here and today I'm really
- 0:02excited because I'm going to be talking
- 0:03to you about something that I've been
- 0:05working on a lot personally lately and
- 0:08I've kind of put together about 15 tips
- 0:11I'd say that have helped me stop
- 0:14spending money and to start saving money
- 0:16I think it's something we all need to be
- 0:17conscious of especially if you know
- 0:20you're around my age and you have
- 0:21student loans or there's a vacation that
- 0:23you want to go on uh it's always a great
- 0:25idea to save money and to be more money
- 0:27conscious so here are my top 15 tips
- 0:29that have helped me stop spending and
- 0:31start
- 0:36saving so first things first it's really
- 0:40great to have a goal in mind of what
- 0:41you're saving towards so this could be
- 0:44something like paying off your student
- 0:45debt paying off a credit card debt it
- 0:47could be a trip you'd really like to go
- 0:49on it could be a new laptop or a new car
- 0:52things like that when you have a
- 0:53specific goal in mind you can be more
- 0:55focused on that goal and more inspired
- 0:58and motivated to save more quickly and
- 1:01stop spending money so for example I
- 1:03remember when I was on a big savings
- 1:05free before my Euro trip for years ago
- 1:08now it's too bad that it was that long
- 1:10ago but anyways when I was on a big
- 1:12savings spree for Europe instead of
- 1:15going out for drinks with friends I
- 1:16might sit this one out and I'd think in
- 1:19my head you know what I I'd rather save
- 1:22this $30 $40 that I would spend on
- 1:24drinks or dinner with my friends and put
- 1:27it towards my Euro trip where I could
- 1:28have dinner and drink drinks say in Rome
- 1:31or somewhere in Europe where it's
- 1:33probably going to be cheaper anyways for
- 1:34the most part so keep your goal in mind
- 1:37and be consistently thinking about it
- 1:39and have it in the back of your mind
- 1:40when you're making plans or feeling
- 1:43tempted to spend money my next tip is to
- 1:45tell your friends and family and those
- 1:47around you about your big goal that
- 1:49you're saving for this can make it a lot
- 1:51easier when you have to say no to them
- 1:53if they're inviting you out to dinner or
- 1:55to an event that's going to be costing
- 1:57you a lot of money it's really important
- 1:59to have goals and people generally
- 2:00respect when other people have goals and
- 2:03it could even Inspire or motivate your
- 2:05friends and family to save money as well
- 2:07so be sure to voice your goal so my next
- 2:09tip is when you get paid so for example
- 2:12I get paid by- weekly I take out the
- 2:15money that I need for my groceries in
- 2:17cash and I'll put that in my wallet and
- 2:19that's the only money that I'm allowed
- 2:20to spend on groceries for the next 2
- 2:22weeks until I get paid again so at the
- 2:25beginning when I was starting out with
- 2:27this new budgeting technique I did did
- 2:30run into a a little bit of a problem so
- 2:33for example I remember one day I I had
- 2:36to eat oatmeal for lunch because that
- 2:38was all I really had left and I was kind
- 2:40of putting together all these random
- 2:42meals at the end of it but you'll learn
- 2:44and it's called discipline so once you
- 2:48become more money conscious you'll be
- 2:49able to budget a lot better and spend
- 2:52your money more efficiently at the
- 2:53grocery storees so I'm really glad that
- 2:54I started off with this technique a few
- 2:56months ago because it's helped me save a
- 2:58lot of money and it's also help me
- 3:00become more conscious while I'm grocery
- 3:02shopping my next tip is to think of
- 3:04money in terms of hours and items in
- 3:07terms of dollars so I'll give you an
- 3:09example here if I am invited to an event
- 3:13and let's say that event cost $100 I'm
- 3:15going to think about that in my mind is
- 3:17how many hourses of work does it take me
- 3:19to make $100 and is this event going to
- 3:22be worth that type of money or if I'm in
- 3:26a store and I maybe see a jacket that I
- 3:28like is this Jack jacket worth $200 is
- 3:31this $200 jacket worth $200 when you
- 3:35start to think of it in terms of time
- 3:37and money you'll be more conscious of
- 3:39where you're spending and how you're
- 3:40spending your money I found that this
- 3:42tip has been very helpful for me my next
- 3:44tip is to stop being so generous for all
- 3:46of you you out there who are generous
- 3:49like myself sometimes you can get a
- 3:51little bit caught up in it and want to
- 3:53splurge on somebody or something it's
- 3:55nice to buy people gifts here and there
- 3:57but be sure that you're being conscious
- 3:59about it and if you have a lot of
- 4:00friends who have birthdays in the same
- 4:02month then think about that ahead of
- 4:04time and save for those birthday cards
- 4:06or those gifts ahead of time so that
- 4:09you're prepared and you're not giving
- 4:10yourself a little bit of a setback in
- 4:12the bank my next tip is to walk places I
- 4:15personally love walking I love listening
- 4:17to music and audio books when I walk
- 4:19especially when the weather's nice but
- 4:20even when it's not nice I always walk to
- 4:22work so that saves me in a Metro pass I
- 4:25know that that's not easy for all of my
- 4:27viewers out there but be more conscious
- 4:30about it or if you do have a car that
- 4:32you drive try to think about only
- 4:35leaving the house once or twice a day
- 4:37for things that you need to do so for
- 4:38example if you have plans with a friend
- 4:40for lunch and you also have to go
- 4:41grocery shopping go out for lunch with
- 4:44your friend and then go grocery shopping
- 4:45on the way home instead of making a few
- 4:47trips out during the day my next tip is
- 4:50to change what you do with your friends
- 4:52so for example if you're always going to
- 4:54the mall with your friends or always
- 4:55going out to eat with your friends
- 4:56you're probably spending a lot of money
- 4:58why not invite your friend friends over
- 5:00and have a pot look at your house or
- 5:02invite them over for say a spa night
- 5:04something like that that is inexpensive
- 5:07and you'll get more intimate quality
- 5:09time with your friends anyways next is
- 5:11to unsubscribe from all those shopping
- 5:13emails or potential spending emails that
- 5:17you'll get in your inbox so for example
- 5:20I was getting emails from J crew from
- 5:24Gray Malon this artist that I like and I
- 5:26always feel tempted to spend money on
- 5:28these things but then I decided to
- 5:31unsubscribe and when I'm ready to shop
- 5:33for those things when I have the money I
- 5:35will go out and get them when you were
- 5:37constantly receiving your inbox flooded
- 5:39with pretty clothes and pretty things
- 5:42you're going to be tempted to buy so
- 5:44just out of sight out of mine just
- 5:47unsubscribe my next tip is to clean out
- 5:49your closet and I'm going to link my
- 5:50video that I made about cleaning out
- 5:52your closet below because once you do
- 5:54this you realize that you actually have
- 5:55a lot more than you thought and when you
- 5:57get rid of a lot of things you realize
- 5:59you don't to keep consuming and buying a
- 6:01lot I've really found comfort in being
- 6:03more of a minimalist lately and it's
- 6:05helped me stop spending money most
- 6:08definitely but also save when you purge
- 6:10your closet you feel fantastic and
- 6:13you'll notice that say you have five
- 6:16basic white t-shirts that you didn't
- 6:18know that you had so when you realize
- 6:20that you have a lot more than you
- 6:22thought you did you're not going to be
- 6:23tempted to go to the store to grab a
- 6:25basic white T-shirt when you actually
- 6:27know that at home now you have five my
- 6:29next tip is to look at your bills or
- 6:31things that you're spending money on and
- 6:32see if you don't need to spend money on
- 6:33them anymore so for example my cell
- 6:36phone bill I call tellas all the time
- 6:38and ask them if there's any way that
- 6:40they can make my bill less expensive
- 6:43sometimes you get a nice person on the
- 6:44other end and they're willing to help
- 6:45you out here and there sometimes not so
- 6:47much but that's just one example another
- 6:49example is the fact that I bought a
- 6:52portable hard drive so I didn't no
- 6:54longer needed my extended storage and
- 6:57Dropbox so I discontin my Dropbox
- 7:00membership and now only use portable
- 7:01hard drives my next tip is with food
- 7:04like I mentioned I found a lot more
- 7:06comfort in becoming more of a minimalist
- 7:08and this has come along I think with
- 7:10veganism as well because I'm finding
- 7:13that I'm eating whole foods that are
- 7:15plants and vegetables so I'm spending
- 7:18less money on those foods and they're
- 7:20also very simple so for example every
- 7:22week I keep a mixture of grains Mo
- 7:25mostly brown rice and beans and maybe
- 7:27some cilantro in a big bowl in my fridge
- 7:30and from this big bowl of substance I
- 7:33can make burritos I can put it on salad
- 7:36I can put it on Kale I can I can do all
- 7:39sorts of things with this mixture in the
- 7:41fridge so it's a very inexpensive
- 7:44mixture and it keeps things very simple
- 7:47my next tip is to bring your lunches to
- 7:48work so like I mentioned I have this
- 7:50mixture in the fridge so I'll bring my
- 7:52greens to work my fruits and vegetables
- 7:55by bringing a very hearty and delicious
- 7:58and simple that's very good for you you
- 8:01won't be tempted to go out and spend
- 8:02money because you won't find yourself
- 8:04hungry during the day tempted to go to
- 8:06the convenience store or to go out for
- 8:09fast food my next tip is for those of
- 8:11you coffee drinkers if you're a coffee
- 8:13drinker and you stop at Starbucks or Tim
- 8:15Horns or wherever to get your coffee
- 8:17every morning you need to stop doing
- 8:19that because it all adds up it might
- 8:20seem like a few dollars here and there
- 8:22but a few dollars every day really adds
- 8:24up think about it over the span of a
- 8:26month and think about it over the span
- 8:28of a year how much money would you save
- 8:30if you didn't go out and spend a lot of
- 8:32money at Starbucks or at Tim horn say
- 8:34wherever you get your coffee every
- 8:36morning I no longer drink coffee but
- 8:38when I did I picked up this cup from
- 8:40Starbucks because I know some of you out
- 8:41there are really obsessed with the white
- 8:43cups and maybe that's why you're so
- 8:44attracted to Starbuck yeah so you can
- 8:46buy a cute little cup like this for $2
- 8:49it's reusable and you can put your tea
- 8:51in there in the morning and drink it
- 8:53while you walk to work or you can also
- 8:55buy um instant coffee this I think this
- 8:58was like $3.99 and it's actually not bad
- 9:01I like I said I don't drink coffee
- 9:02anymore but it doesn't taste bad and how
- 9:05many cups you can you get out of this
- 9:07you only need a spoonful for each one so
- 9:09yeah just be conscious of spending money
- 9:13on Beverages and finally my last tip is
- 9:16to stay out of places where you feel
- 9:18tempted to spend money so for me this is
- 9:20probably the mall if say you've cleaned
- 9:23out your closet and you still feel like
- 9:24you need some things why not check out a
- 9:26secondhand store or check out could G
- 9:29your Craigslist if you need something
- 9:31like a winter coat people are selling
- 9:33these things all the time that are
- 9:35lightly used you can also hold a
- 9:38clothing Swap and Shop party with a few
- 9:40of your girlfriends and you can all
- 9:41exchange clothes and feel like you have
- 9:43a whole new wardrobe there's so many
- 9:45options instead of going to the mall and
- 9:46spending excessive amounts of money
- 9:49anyways I hope this video helped you
- 9:51guys please leave any additional tips
- 9:52you have below because we can all help
- 9:54each other out here and let's start
- 9:56aggressively saving that money if you
- 9:58like this video don't forget to give me
- 10:00a thumbs up and subscribe below and I'll
- 10:02see you again very soon bye
