  4. 0:06throughout history jewish people have
  5. 0:08been perceived as being wealthy
  6. 0:10but where did that rhetoric stem from we
  7. 0:12know that jewish people like all people
  8. 0:14have their wealthy middle class and
  9. 0:16their lower income group so alexers
  10. 0:18today we're going to delve deep into
  11. 0:20this thought process

  13. 0:25future billionaires come to get inspired
  14. 0:28if you're not subscribed yet you're
  15. 0:31missing out
  16. 0:33number one judaism and wealth
  17. 0:36judaism doesn't cast poverty as a sign
  18. 0:39of righteousness
  19. 0:40as other beliefs might instead they
  20. 0:42believe each person
  21. 0:44should avoid poverty and be gainfully
  22. 0:46employed to earn their own living
  23. 0:48this is a fundamental value that has led
  24. 0:50to a good work ethic and a personal
  25. 0:52responsibility for each person
  26. 0:54earning their own keep jewish people
  27. 0:56also believe in giving
  28. 0:58they believe that 10 to 20 of wages
  29. 1:00should go toward religious
  30. 1:02and charitable causes however they don't
  31. 1:04believe in relying on charity to lift
  32. 1:06yourself up
  33. 1:06and certainly not to become a burden on
  34. 1:08the community growing up with this kind
  35. 1:10of mindset makes for a solid foundation
  36. 1:13to see success
  37. 1:14as the only option number two
  38. 1:18european jews couldn't own land
  39. 1:21if you think anti-semitism was only
  40. 1:23popularized in world war ii
  41. 1:25think again jewish people have had a
  42. 1:27tough history
  43. 1:28including not being able to own land in
  44. 1:30europe from as far back as the medieval
  45. 1:32times
  46. 1:33but where there's a will there's a way
  47. 1:35so jewish people found
  48. 1:36alternative ways to build their wealth
  49. 1:38outside of property owning
  50. 1:40one of them being merchants and traders
  51. 1:42industries to this day where they still
  52. 1:44have a big footprint in most countries
  53. 1:46this created a safety net for jewish
  54. 1:48communities because
  55. 1:50where their services were needed they
  56. 1:51were safe number three
  57. 1:55religious opportunity was taken to
  58. 1:57christians in the middle ages
  59. 1:59charging interest was a sin this
  60. 2:01prevented them from holding any type of
  61. 2:03financial job
  62. 2:04leaving the opportunities in that field
  63. 2:06open to the jewish community who did
  64. 2:08not see lending in the same way jewish
  65. 2:10people became prominent in money lending
  66. 2:12businesses
  67. 2:12the jewish people's early success in
  68. 2:14this lucrative business
  69. 2:16was a forerunner for many of the
  70. 2:18stereotypes we hear today of jewish
  71. 2:20people number four
  72. 2:23opened the first banks it was a hop and
  73. 2:26a skip from money lending to opening the
  74. 2:28first banks in europe for the jewish
  75. 2:30community
  76. 2:31they could manage transactions transfers
  77. 2:33and day-to-day financial services
  78. 2:35plus continue to lend money and charge
  79. 2:37interest with their strong background in
  80. 2:39finance
  81. 2:40this was a much needed service on a
  82. 2:42developing continent
  83. 2:43and helped to fuel further growth but it
  84. 2:45wasn't all
  85. 2:46rosy this success also led to jealousy
  86. 2:49which
  87. 2:50fueled much of the anti-semitic
  88. 2:52sentiment throughout the ages
  89. 2:55number five the most educated religious
  90. 2:58group
  91. 2:58in 2016 the pew center released a study
  92. 3:01which listed jewish people as the most
  93. 3:04educated religious group in the world on
  94. 3:06average
  95. 3:07the jewish community receives 13.4 years
  96. 3:10of schooling
  97. 3:10when it comes to post-secondary degrees
  98. 3:13jewish people hold 61
  99. 3:15of the qualifications what's more
  100. 3:17surprising is the vast difference
  101. 3:19between
  102. 3:19first and second most educated religions
  103. 3:22christians
  104. 3:22rank second most educated but compared
  105. 3:25to the average of 13.4 years of
  106. 3:27schooling among jewish people
  107. 3:28christians only rack up an average of
  108. 3:309.3 years at school
  109. 3:32more credentials lead to a higher
  110. 3:34starting salary and this
  111. 3:36immediately improves the financial
  112. 3:38status of jewish people
  113. 3:40right out of university number six
  114. 3:43they look after one another perhaps it
  115. 3:46comes from a long history of being
  116. 3:47marginalized or perhaps it's just
  117. 3:49inherent nature but jewish people have a
  118. 3:52deep pride in sharing their wealth to
  119. 3:53benefit their community
  120. 3:55this mutual aid mentality is a part of
  121. 3:57their ethos
  122. 3:58and ensures that each member of the
  123. 4:00community is supported to enable them to
  124. 4:02succeed
  125. 4:02if someone opens a new business the
  126. 4:04community will rally around them to
  127. 4:06support it
  128. 4:07if someone else falls on hard times the
  129. 4:09community will try to help them out
  130. 4:11judaic law instructs that poor people
  131. 4:13are to be respected and protected
  132. 4:16this strong focus on uplifting the whole
  133. 4:18community has meant that even
  134. 4:20shunned jewish communities have managed
  135. 4:22to survive the hardest times
  136. 4:23by investing in one another the idea of
  137. 4:26wealth is not just to accumulate wealth
  138. 4:28which is seen as vanity
  139. 4:30wealth is seen as a means to an end to
  140. 4:32grow a community
  141. 4:34it is highly frowned upon to not give
  142. 4:36generously to the social and spiritual
  143. 4:38needs of the community
  144. 4:41number seven their religion teaches good
  145. 4:44business practices
  146. 4:46the torah and many jewish philosophers
  147. 4:48leaders and writers have made it clear
  148. 4:50how jewish businesses must operate
  149. 4:53according to these teachings there's
  150. 4:54absolutely no room for dishonest
  151. 4:57practices
  152. 4:58any deception collusion or price fixing
  153. 5:00against a consumer is known as
  154. 5:02ona'a which translated means oppression
  155. 5:05fleecing the consumer is seen as an
  156. 5:07oppression of their freedom
  157. 5:09knowing that you're going into business
  158. 5:10with someone who's inspired to good
  159. 5:13ethics by a higher power
  160. 5:14makes jewish business people a very
  161. 5:16attractive business partner to many
  162. 5:20number eight resilience and perseverance
  163. 5:23are second nature despite extreme
  164. 5:26challenges
  165. 5:26jewish people have shown resilience
  166. 5:28throughout it's woven into their fabric
  167. 5:30and the focus remains on the spiritual
  168. 5:32and practical
  169. 5:33with this resilience and perseverance
  170. 5:36giving up is not an option
  171. 5:37when things go wrong in business which
  172. 5:39happens there's no self-pity but an
  173. 5:42attitude of
  174. 5:42happens let's figure out how to fix
  175. 5:45it as author of
  176. 5:46the money code become a millionaire with
  177. 5:48the ancient jewish code
  178. 5:50h.w charles wrote the jews are known for
  179. 5:53their perseverance and this is what
  180. 5:55helps them achieve their goals
  181. 5:57perseverance means continuous
  182. 5:59persistence in a course of action
  183. 6:00a purpose in spite of difficulties
  184. 6:03obstacles or
  185. 6:04discouragement number nine
  186. 6:07good financial education taught over
  187. 6:09generations
  188. 6:11jay-z got a lot of pushback for his
  189. 6:13comments on jewish people in his
  190. 6:14track the story of oj the controversial
  191. 6:17line was
  192. 6:18you want to know what's more important
  193. 6:19than throwing away money at a strip club
  194. 6:21credit you ever wonder why jewish people
  195. 6:23own all the property in america
  196. 6:25this is how they did it it was seen by
  197. 6:27many experts as
  198. 6:28reinforcing the stereotype that jewish
  199. 6:30people have some kind of global control
  200. 6:32of property and banks however jay-z
  201. 6:34defenders
  202. 6:35saw it as a shout-out to jewish success
  203. 6:38and a hint to the black community to
  204. 6:39follow
  205. 6:40similar business ventures and invest in
  206. 6:42each other the kind of generational
  207. 6:44knowledge and market confidence in the
  208. 6:46areas of finance and property that the
  209. 6:48jewish community has
  210. 6:49is enviable no matter who you support
  211. 6:52number 10 parents teach their children
  212. 6:55the value of money
  213. 6:56in many households speaking openly about
  214. 6:59finance is taboo
  215. 7:00parents try to protect their children by
  216. 7:02not sharing if they're having financial
  217. 7:04troubles
  218. 7:04or if they're wealthy displaying that
  219. 7:06it's okay to splurge
  220. 7:08by using five jars many jewish parents
  221. 7:11teach their children
  222. 7:12how to be money-wise each jar is labeled
  223. 7:15tithe giving and offering saving
  224. 7:18investing
  225. 7:18and spending children are given 10
  226. 7:20shekels and the child puts
  227. 7:22one in the tithe jar one in the giving
  228. 7:24and offering one in the savings
  229. 7:26two in investing and five in spending
  230. 7:29the giving jar is opened up on sundays
  231. 7:32the tithe which means 10th in hebrew is
  232. 7:34opened at the end of the month
  233. 7:36the savings is opened on special
  234. 7:38occasions and investing is only opened
  235. 7:40when
  236. 7:41full parents don't intervene and the
  237. 7:43child is responsible for the money
  238. 7:45but the children learn from their
