- 0:15>> Hello and welcome back everyone to
- 0:16Unreal Engine beginner's guide to
- 0:18building an environment. In the last
- 0:20lesson we completed an entire shape of
- 0:22the bridge and this time we're just
- 0:24going to make some tweaks in regards to
- 0:26the colors and make some adjustments to
- 0:28the overall
- 0:29Make sure using a material instance
- 0:32provided within a Quixel asset itself.
- 0:35So let's go ahead and get started. I'm
- 0:37going to go into the 3D assets folder
- 0:40for the Megascans and actually right
- 0:43away I think we're going to adjust and
- 0:45tweak out the values for these planks
- 0:47over here. So I'm thinking about going
- 0:49into
- 0:51the ones that have small wood boards.
- 0:53Let's go ahead and open that up and in
- 0:56order for us to tweak the values over
- 0:57here, I think before doing the tweaks,
- 1:00we're just going to make a duplicate out
- 1:02of the material instance itself. So
- 1:05later on if you want to have the
- 1:07original kind of a look that we have
- 1:09right now, we can always set up and I
- 1:12reassign the material instance back to
- 1:15its default state. So by selecting it
- 1:18and then clicking control C and control
- 1:19V, we're able to make a duplicate out of
- 1:21it just like that and we're just going
- 1:23to leave it as is and I think we're just
- 1:26going to adjust the material instance to
- 1:28the full one that we had previously
- 1:30right away. So if we double click on it,
- 1:32we'll be able to open up a material
- 1:34instance editor and we get a bunch of
- 1:37parameters out of them.
- 1:38So on the right side for the details
- 1:40tab, I'm actually just going to lower
- 1:42this down a little bit like so so we
- 1:43could see our
- 1:45boards of the bridge right away as is.
- 1:49So the main ones that we want to adjust
- 1:52is going to be within the albedo tab. If
- 1:54we were to expand this, we'll see albedo
- 1:58uh tint and albedo controls.
- 2:00So, albedo tint is just a color tint
- 2:02that we're able to adjust. If we were to
- 2:04select in it and then click on this
- 2:06square over here, we're able to get
- 2:08ourselves a color picker. Now, by
- 2:10default, if it's set to white, it means
- 2:12that it won't be affecting the texture
- 2:14itself and we're only going to be
- 2:16applying a tint once we're starting to
- 2:20darken this up. So, for example, if we
- 2:22start to darken this entire thing up,
- 2:23you can see how the boards are being
- 2:25darkened up as well, which is pretty
- 2:27nice. Not only we can darken these
- 2:29boards, we can also change the
- 2:30saturation, the type of tint that we're
- 2:32having for these boards as well. So, by
- 2:35changing them for example something like
- 2:36green, we're going to get a greenish
- 2:38type of a tint, which is pretty nice as
- 2:40is.
- 2:41So, I think
- 2:42we're actually going to
- 2:44go back to the default one and maybe
- 2:46play around a little bit with
- 2:48a
- 2:49orange tint like so.
- 2:52And maybe just darken it up a little bit
- 2:54like so. So, these are the values that
- 2:56I'm going to use.
- 2:58We're going to make uh just a really
- 2:59small tweak and we're going to hit okay.
- 3:02So, we can even tick this box over here
- 3:05and see how it looks like before it's
- 3:07being applied. So, if you untick it and
- 3:09then tick it back on, we can see we're
- 3:10just applying a small bit of a tint onto
- 3:13our planks. Now, for us to have a even
- 3:16greater control of this overall texture,
- 3:18what we can do is we can make use out of
- 3:20the albedo controls. So, by ticking this
- 3:22on and expanding this list, we see we
- 3:25have a bunch of different options for us
- 3:27to use. Things like saturation,
- 3:30brightness, contrast. We can make use
- 3:32out of all of them and of course, just
- 3:35as the name suggests, by changing the
- 3:37saturation, clicking and holding and
- 3:38then dragging to the left or right,
- 3:40we're able to change the saturation of
- 3:43these boards. And of course, the
- 3:44brightness goes the same kind of way.
- 3:46And we're going to be changing that up
- 3:49and darkening the down a little bit,
- 3:51changing the saturation a little We're
- 3:52going to change it to 0.7 like so.
- 3:55Changing the brightness to be a little
- 3:58bit darker. I think this is going to be
- 4:00much nicer. Actually, let's try Yeah,
- 4:02let's go ahead and darken it down a
- 4:05little bit. And then let's play around
- 4:07with the contrast maybe a little bit.
- 4:09Or actually, because we're changing
- 4:11contrast,
- 4:12we're going to change this to 0.85. I
- 4:15think that's going to be a nice value.
- 4:16And we're going to increase the
- 4:17saturation back up. I think it's going
- 4:19to look much nicer. So,
- 4:22let's go ahead and change the saturation
- 4:24to 0.8. And we're already getting some
- 4:26nice results, but I think it's too
- 4:27bright. But even if we were to change
- 4:29the darkness, we're not going to get
- 4:31quite as nice a result. So, I think I'm
- 4:32going to go back onto the tint and
- 4:35darken this down a little bit more.
- 4:37And increase the saturation over like
- 4:39this. Like so. And I think that's going
- 4:41to give us some really nice results. So,
- 4:43maybe we want to make it a little bit
- 4:45more brownish.
- 4:46Like so.
- 4:49That's going to look quite nice.
- 4:52Darken it down a little bit.
- 4:54And we're just making sure that all of
- 4:55these planks have more or less the same
- 4:57kind of a tint applied throughout this
- 4:59entire texture. So, it's just going to
- 5:01look like it's more part of the right
- 5:03kind of result. We also have something
- 5:05called NA, which of course doesn't do
- 5:06anything. So, we can just going to leave
- 5:08it as a zero. And the brightness
- 5:11actually going to play around a little
- 5:13bit with the brightness. Maybe lower
- 5:14this down even to a value of 0.4.
- 5:17And maybe just maybe it's going to look
- 5:19quite nice.
- 5:21Now, as you can see, there's one board
- 5:23that's actually going to look a little
- 5:24bit too dark and one that is going to
- 5:26look too bright. So, I think we're going
- 5:28to close this down and we're going to
- 5:30apply the original material instance
- 5:33that we had back onto those boards
- 5:35because they stand out a little bit too
- 5:36much, I reckon. So, what we're going to
- 5:38do is the easiest way to apply them is
- 5:40by simply dragging and dropping them
- 5:42onto those boards like so. We're going
- 5:43to get its original default kind of a
- 5:45color. So, actually I'm just going to
- 5:47drag it onto the
- 5:49one that's the darkest, and that's going
- 5:51to give us actually some real nice
- 5:52results.
- 5:53Just going to drag this one over here.
- 5:56Going to click control Z because I mis-
- 5:58misaligned it, and there you go.
- 6:01We're able to brighten this up. Now, if
- 6:03we want to darken these ones down a
- 6:06little bit even more, just to make it
- 6:08suit more suitable, we're going to make
- 6:10a duplicate out of the one that we
- 6:12adjusted out of these values. So, we're
- 6:14going to make a third material instance
- 6:17just like that.
- 6:18And we're going to actually
- 6:20make this a little bit darker. So, we're
- 6:23going to go into this
- 6:25material instance, and we're going to
- 6:27lower the brightness.
- 6:30And by setting this up to value of 0.2,
- 6:33I think it's going to look all right.
- 6:34We're going to now close this down.
- 6:35We've got a much darker variation. So,
- 6:37now if we apply this onto this plank, we
- 6:39can see the difference that it's going
- 6:41to make. And this way, we're able to
- 6:43have a lot of control over color
- 6:45textures, and have a really really nice
- 6:48results of the overall type of a look
- 6:50for our boards. So, I think it's already
- 6:54looking pretty nice.
- 6:56But, I don't quite like the way these
- 6:59are looking. So, I think we're going to
- 7:01be changing them up a little bit, the
- 7:03beams themselves.
- 7:05So, let's go into the 3D assets. Let's
- 7:07go into the wooden beam and adjust
- 7:09material instance. And just like we did
- 7:11previously, we're going to click control
- 7:13C, control V to make a duplicate of the
- 7:15default one, and we're going to maybe
- 7:18change up the boards right away. But,
- 7:21now that I think about it, we might be
- 7:24using them for our
- 7:26house. And I think
- 7:29Yeah, I think if we were to change that
- 7:31up, the default material instance that's
- 7:33assigned onto the default static mesh,
- 7:36the next time we're going to be dragging
- 7:37this out, we'll have the adjusted
- 7:40values. So, instead what I'd like us to
- 7:41do is I like us to make a different
- 7:44assigned material instance. So, right
- 7:46now we have a material the original one
- 7:49and the material instance the copy of
- 7:51it. So, now we're going to click on one
- 7:54of the poles and see the name in the
- 7:56outliner. And we can see that if I were
- 7:59to extend it a little bit,
- 8:01we can see that it is named the worn
- 8:03wooden beam. And because it's in
- 8:05alphabetical order, all of these worn
- 8:08wooden beams are going to be in exactly
- 8:10the same order. So, what we need to do
- 8:12is simply click on the first one that's
- 8:14named like this and then scroll all the
- 8:16way down and while holding shift, click
- 8:20on the last one and this way we should
- 8:22grab all of them at once. So, if I were
- 8:24to just drag them out, you can see that
- 8:26all of them are being moved to the side.
- 8:28And because we selected all of them and
- 8:30because they are the same asset, they're
- 8:32the instances of the same asset, we're
- 8:34going to have within the details tab
- 8:36more or less the same kind of results.
- 8:37So, materials, you can see that all of
- 8:40them are being assigned one material. If
- 8:42we have something additional selected,
- 8:43for example, I'm going to click while
- 8:45holding shift, going to click on this
- 8:47plank over here, we can see that the
- 8:49material is going to change with two
- 8:51materials selected. But even so, if we
- 8:53were to
- 8:55click on display two materials, we're
- 8:56going to see these elements being shown.
- 8:59So, what we need to do is just simply
- 9:01make sure we replace the original
- 9:03material instance with the material that
- 9:07we made a copy out of. So, right now
- 9:09this is the original one. I know that it
- 9:11has the same look, so I know that it is
- 9:13the same one. All we got to do is
- 9:16drag the copy into this element like so
- 9:19and we're going to have a replacement
- 9:21out of them just like that.
- 9:25And let me just have a look. I think I
- 9:27made a mistake. Going to click from lit
- 9:30to unlit just to make sure I see the
- 9:32albedo map a little bit more the color
- 9:34information and actually seems like
- 9:36we're having some artifacts And I
- 9:38believe the reason for it is because
- 9:40this is not the same wooden beam that I
- 9:42was using. So, let me just have a look
- 9:43real quick. I'm going to drag this
- 9:45outwards and I can see that it is a
- 9:46complete different wooden beam. So, I'm
- 9:48just going to click control Z and go
- 9:50back to its original values.
- 9:53And actually just going to delete this
- 9:55material instance and click delete
- 9:57because we weren't using it. It's just
- 9:59going to prompt up with a simple delete
- 10:01window. And then we're going to go back
- 10:04onto the 3D assets and find ourselves
- 10:07the right one. So, small wood boards.
- 10:09Oh, sorry. It's because we have this
- 10:11selected. Just going to untick it. It's
- 10:13going to be called worn wooden beam. So,
- 10:16it's going to be the last one over here.
- 10:19Worn wooden beam. Let's go ahead and
- 10:21open it up. Again, I made sure I click
- 10:23control Z to undo my step. I still have
- 10:26all of this selected and I'm just going
- 10:28to go get the material instance selected
- 10:31within the content browser. Click
- 10:33control C, control V, make a duplicate
- 10:35out of it. Now we have a material
- 10:37instance copy out of it.
- 10:39And we're going to drag this into the
- 10:41material that we have that is basically
- 10:44looking exactly the same as this icon
- 10:45over here. So, we're just going to click
- 10:47and drag and drop it into this material
- 10:50like so. And we pretty much replace it.
- 10:52Although, we're not going to be be
- 10:54seeing a much of a difference right now
- 10:55because we didn't actually make any
- 10:57tweaks to the material instance. So,
- 10:59let's go ahead and do that right away
- 11:00actually. We're going to open this
- 11:02material instance like so.
- 11:04We're going to click albedo tint and
- 11:06albedo controls and we're going to play
- 11:08around with values a little bit. So,
- 11:10we're going to make sure that albedo
- 11:11controls have this entire tab opened up.
- 11:15Albedo tint though can have it closed
- 11:18down. And we're just going to play
- 11:20around with the values right away. I
- 11:21think I'm just going to try darkening
- 11:23darkening this down a little bit and see
- 11:25how this looks and
- 11:28maybe it's not being affected. Just want
- 11:30to see what is up with that. Going to
- 11:32close this down, see if they're being
- 11:34applied.
- 11:35And I think they're being applied. Just
- 11:36going to make sure that they're being
- 11:39attached to this like so. And it seems
- 11:42like I need to make sure I have them all
- 11:44selected again.
- 11:46And reattach them just like that. And
- 11:48now this is going to work. So I just
- 11:49made sure I reselect remake my selection
- 11:53and then attach it the material onto it
- 11:56just like that. And now it seems to make
- 11:58a proper assignment onto the material
- 12:01instance.
- 12:02So now we can open this up and make some
- 12:03tweaks. And by tweaking this around, we
- 12:06can see that it is making the changes
- 12:08that we want. So I'm just going to make
- 12:10it a little bit brownish and darken it
- 12:12up a little bit more like so.
- 12:14And click okay.
- 12:16Then I'm thinking maybe just maybe
- 12:19I'm going to actually adjust the
- 12:21roughness values for this as well.
- 12:23Because by default, this wood looks
- 12:25quite a bit dried up. And obviously
- 12:27because it's going to be next to the
- 12:28water, we probably don't want this kind
- 12:30of a result. So we're going to actually
- 12:32go and make additional tweaks to it. So
- 12:34by scrolling down, we actually have
- 12:37roughness value over here. And by
- 12:39enabling these both like so,
- 12:41by default it's going to be one and
- 12:43zero. And this is just like a clamp sort
- 12:46of a value. So the maximum result for
- 12:49how rough the value is going to be. If
- 12:51we lower this down, we're going to get a
- 12:53much shinier result. Alternatively, if
- 12:56we increase this value the minimum
- 12:57roughness,
- 12:58we'd get a much a rougher type of a
- 13:01value. So
- 13:03we're going to actually only
- 13:04decrease the maximum roughness value
- 13:07from one. We're going to change it maybe
- 13:09to 0.5. Let's go ahead and see how this
- 13:10looks. And maybe it's a little bit too
- 13:12much though. We don't want it to overdo
- 13:14it. So 0.8. And I think Yeah, I think
- 13:17that's just looking much better as is.
- 13:19We're going to keep it as is actually.
- 13:21This is looking quite nice. So let's go
- 13:23ahead and leave it as is. Maybe actually
- 13:27we need to lower the contrast. I'm going
- 13:30to try to lower the contrast a little
- 13:31bit just to see how it looks like.
- 13:33And just by lowering just a little bit,
- 13:36we might get some nicer results.
- 13:39But it's again, it's just a matter of
- 13:41preference how it's going to look like.
- 13:43For now, I think we're going to keep it
- 13:45as a value of one, and we're just going
- 13:47to leave it as it is. And worst case, in
- 13:49the future, we might just come back to
- 13:51it and see how that looks.
- 13:53And actually,
- 13:55we might, because we we changed up the
- 13:57roughness value, we're going to get a
- 13:58different type of a light bounce on
- 14:00these
- 14:01areas. And I think we should probably
- 14:04increase the brightness just a little
- 14:05bit.
- 14:07Like so, to value 1.2.
- 14:091.2, like so.
- 14:11And now we're going to get some real
- 14:13nice results, maybe even 1.4.
- 14:16Yeah, I think 1.4 is going to be quite
- 14:18nice. We don't want it to get the exact
- 14:19same value as the planks on the top. We
- 14:21just want to have it look like it's part
- 14:24of the same atmosphere, the same
- 14:26environment, but at same time it's made
- 14:28out of different type of wood, because
- 14:29these are planks and these ones are kind
- 14:31of like logs that were used to build
- 14:34this bridge.
- 14:35So, finally, I think we're going to just
- 14:37switch up these planks as well, and for
- 14:40the ones that are here, they're quite
- 14:41light. I think we're going to keep them
- 14:43as quite light, because they're just
- 14:45going to look so much nicer, and they're
- 14:46just going to stand out so much more.
- 14:48And worst case, we can come back to it
- 14:50and switch them around a little bit. But
- 14:53yeah, for now, let's just go ahead and
- 14:54switch these planks up. So, we're just
- 14:55going to select this plank. We're going
- 14:57to close down the instant bro- uh
- 15:00material browser that we had previously,
- 15:03and select the plank that's underneath.
- 15:06Going to click on this button over here.
- 15:09And by simply clicking on this, we're
- 15:11able to go straight into the folder for
- 15:13where this material instance is located.
- 15:17So, now we're going to make a copy out
- 15:18of it. Control C, control V, make a
- 15:20duplicate.
- 15:21Select the wooden beam that we had. We
- 15:23can see that the names, because it's in
- 15:26alphabetical order, we have three of
- 15:27them. We're going to select all three of
- 15:29them and apply our material instance
- 15:32that we just made a copy out of it. You
- 15:34can see that the name has changed, so
- 15:35that's good. Now we can go into this
- 15:37material instance and change up the
- 15:39tint. We can click on it,
- 15:42make it darker quite a bit like so,
- 15:45make it browner even,
- 15:47like so.
- 15:49And let's have a look.
- 15:51I think we need to make it look
- 15:53roughened up. It looks too plain at the
- 15:54moment, so I'm going to increase the
- 15:57contrast for this one
- 15:59by quite a bit by just increasing it to
- 16:00a value of 0.8 maybe,
- 16:02maybe 0.6 1.6.
- 16:05Like so and it's going to give us some
- 16:07nice results right away. I think that's
- 16:09going to look quite nice.
- 16:10So, yeah. And maybe just saturation,
- 16:13remove that a little bit.
- 16:14Otherwise it just looks a little bit too
- 16:16much.
- 16:17And that's all there is to it to be able
- 16:20to tweak all of these values. So, it's
- 16:22already looking quite nice. Maybe we
- 16:23should adjust these a little bit and
- 16:26make them look a little bit darker
- 16:28in regards to the overall design. Now
- 16:31going back to it,
- 16:32but yeah, okay. Let's leave it as it is
- 16:35for now and in the next lesson we're
- 16:37going to continue building up our
- 16:38environment. This time we're actually
- 16:39going to start on creating the house
- 16:43area over here. So, thank you so much
- 16:46for watching and I'll see you in a bit.
