1. 0:00All right. Now, first of all, I have to
2. 0:02explain that
3. 0:03Mary, our executive producer, is so
4. 0:05scared of sharks that it's just amazing
5. 0:07she's still in the room and is going to
6. 0:09listen to this story.
7. 0:11Um
8. 0:12You you you weren't surfing, you were
9. 0:13paddling on the board, right?
10. 0:15Um well, actually, I was laying on my
11. 0:17board waiting for a wave.
12. 0:18Okay.
13. 0:19Yeah.
14. 0:19And then, what do you feel? What do you
15. 0:21see?
16. 0:22Um
17. 0:23well, I didn't like the shark just came
18. 0:27out of nowhere and like was grabbing a
19. 0:29hold of me. I just saw a gray blur.
20. 0:31And then, um
21. 0:33I didn't really like feel anything. It
22. 0:36just kind of like pulled me back and
23. 0:37forth and then after that, I just headed
24. 0:39for the shore. I didn't really feel
25. 0:41anything.
26. 0:41It pulled you back and forth, but you
27. 0:42stayed on the board. It didn't tip you
28. 0:44over. You just held onto the board.
29. 0:46Yeah, it didn't like drastically pull me
30. 0:49back and forth, just a little bit.
31. 0:50didn't know your arm was gone. You're
32. 0:52just on the board.
33. 0:53Well, after the shark went under, I
34. 0:55knew, but
35. 0:56Mhm.
36. 0:57Yeah.
37. 0:57And it didn't come back because if
38. 1:00sharks don't like the taste of people
39. 1:01For people who are scared of sharks,
40. 1:03they once they see that it's a human,
41. 1:04they really don't want to keep eating.
42. 1:07They they They thought you were like a
43. 1:08fish or something, right?
44. 1:10Well, we paddled over this shallow reef,
45. 1:13so he couldn't have got it got us on the
46. 1:15shallow reef until we came to the
47. 1:17channel.
48. 1:17Okay, but you were way out there, right?
49. 1:19Um yeah, it's about a quarter of a mile.
50. 1:22Okay, so that happens, and then you were
51. 1:25out with a couple of friends, and uh
52. 1:28now, you Holt, you were with her, right?
53. 1:31Yeah.
54. 1:31And so, you paddled her back?
55. 1:34Yeah, um right after she got bit, we I
56. 1:37just wanted to get her out of the area
57. 1:39as quickly as possible, so we uh
58. 1:41And I actually didn't realize her arm
59. 1:43was gone until I got close to her, cuz
60. 1:45she was paddling like, you know, I just
61. 1:46thought maybe I I did see blood in the
62. 1:48water.
63. 1:49Was she crying or screaming or anything?
64. 1:51She just said, "I got attacked by a
65. 1:53shark." And then, she started paddling
66. 1:55in, and so I kind of paddled over to her
67. 1:58and when I got close to her I noticed
68. 1:59that her arm was missing.
69. 2:01Mhm.
70. 2:02And so I just kind of got her into a
71. 2:04little wave and and she caught the wave.
72. 2:06I pushed her into it and she caught it
73. 2:08and rode it up onto the shallow part of
74. 2:10the reef which was about 4 ft deep. And
75. 2:13my son caught a wave with her and he
76. 2:15actually took her across the reef.
77. 2:18Okay, so that took about what 15 20
78. 2:19minutes to get
79. 2:20Well, she got to get across to get to
80. 2:21the shallow part of the reef is probably
81. 2:23about about a 5-minute paddle and then I
82. 2:25caught up to them and I tied my
83. 2:28rash guard around her arm, you know,
84. 2:30like a tourniquet and told him to go to
85. 2:33the beach and to call 911.
86. 2:36And then I paddled her the rest of the
87. 2:37way across the channel which is probably
88. 2:39another
89. 2:40at least a 10-minute paddle.
90. 2:43Dragging her, yeah.
91. 2:44Okay, so now when and here's the and
92. 2:47you've already surfed again since this
93. 2:49has happened.
94. 2:49Yeah.

97. 3:00Now
98. 3:02It's it's you're you're just sitting
99. 3:03here smiling like, you know, you don't
100. 3:05even understand what the big deal of
101. 3:06this is.
102. 3:07And now are you scared? Do you think
103. 3:10about You must I mean there must be an
104. 3:11awareness of sharks all the time if you
105. 3:13surf all the time cuz you were what?
106. 3:14Ranked number two? You you surf all the
107. 3:16time.
108. 3:16Yeah. Um well
109. 3:20I have a little fear but you know
110. 3:23I think God has planned for me and I
111. 3:25don't think it's planned for me is to
112. 3:27get bitten by a shark again and um
113. 3:30Right. Well, chance of that you're
114. 3:31right.
115. 3:32Yeah.
116. 3:37All right.
117. 3:38Um
118. 3:39All right. Well, there are more more
119. 3:41things that I have to ask. We have to
120. 3:42take a a quick break and and we'll be

125. 3:51Bethany I just wanted to say we only
126. 3:52have a few minutes left, but I wanted to
127. 3:53say that I actually saw the story and
128. 3:56and read about this and immediately
129. 3:58said, "Can we have her on the show?"
130. 4:00because uh your attitude is amazing. And
131. 4:03there are people that have a lot less
132. 4:05going on that sit and and feel sorry for
133. 4:08themselves and say, "Why me?" and this
134. 4:10is horrible and and get stuck in that
135. 4:12and you are an inspiration. You really
136. 4:15are.
137. 4:24Well,
138. 4:26I think that
139. 4:28Jesus has brought me through this time
140. 4:30and um
141. 4:32his plan for me is just
142. 4:34so special and unique that I'm looking
143. 4:37forward to it and I I don't want to sit
144. 4:39around moping and worrying about the
145. 4:41past. I just want to look forward and
146. 4:44have a good life.
147. 4:45Well, that's a great way to look at it.
148. 4:48That
149. 4:52That's what we should all be doing. We
150. 4:54we should all be looking forward and we
151. 4:55should all be moving forward instead of
152. 4:57looking backwards. And now in with this
153. 4:59is an amazing thing, too. This part of
154. 5:01the story is incredible. You're being
155. 5:03rushed to the hospital. Your dad There
156. 5:05was a man on the table about to be
157. 5:07operated. He had It was knee surgery and
158. 5:10they had to take him off the table and
159. 5:12and say there's a a 13-year-old with a
160. 5:14shark attack that we need to get in here
161. 5:16right away and it happens to be your
162. 5:18daughter.
163. 5:19Yes.
164. 5:20So they take you off the table and your
165. 5:22daughter is rushed in.
166. 5:24That's right.
167. 5:25That Did you Did you have a feeling it
168. 5:27might be her or
169. 5:29Well, I had just gotten a spinal tap and
170. 5:31they were let setting up the TV monitor
171. 5:33so I could watch my own knee operation.
172. 5:35An emergency room doctor came in and
173. 5:37said, "There's a shark attack victim
174. 5:39coming from the North Shore." And I just
175. 5:41looked at him and I said, "Do you have
176. 5:43any idea who it is?" And he goes,
177. 5:45"All we know it's a 13-year-old girl."
178. 5:46So I knew it was either Holt's daughter
179. 5:48Alana or Bethany cuz
180. 5:51I just had that feeling in my gut.
181. 5:53Wow.
182. 5:54Unbelievable.
183. 5:55Yep.
