4. 0:09And this morning on the boulder, we have
5. 0:12a very special guest, Aaron Ralston.
6. 0:17Oh gosh, it's real pleasure to be here.

9. 0:25I WAS OUT ON A hike in Southern Utah in
10. 0:282003
11. 0:29out for a day of vacation and and was
12. 0:32hiking through a slot canyon, which is a
13. 0:33very narrow canyon. I was moving down
14. 0:36through this
15. 0:37this canyon at a point where the bottom
16. 0:39of the canyon dropped off over
17. 0:42what would have been a waterfall if if
18. 0:43there had been water in the canyon, but
19. 0:45this this drop-off, there was a boulder
20. 0:48wedged between the walls of the canyon
21. 0:50and I was maneuvering over that and as I
22. 0:52was dangling from it, I dislodged the
23. 0:54rock and of course now I'm underneath
24. 0:56it, it's falling and as it was
25. 0:58ricocheting between the walls of the
26. 1:00canyon, I I put my hands up to
27. 1:03keep my head out of the way to push the
28. 1:05rock back to to get myself
29. 1:07out of its its path and
30. 1:10I hit the ground, the boulder came down,
31. 1:12it it wedged itself between the walls of
32. 1:15the canyon again, but at this moment my
33. 1:17my hand had slipped in around the side
34. 1:20of the rock and became crushed and
35. 1:23trapped.
36. 1:29Oops.
37. 1:36James being who he is was
38. 1:38brilliant at it. He's I just I I still
39. 1:41can't believe as I watch and it's so
40. 1:44effective that I'm transported through
41. 1:46the experience all over again, but he's
42. 1:48just pretending. I mean, he's not
43. 1:49actually getting his arm off, quite
44. 1:51obviously, but that it's just he can he
45. 1:53can take us there so effectively. He
46. 1:56never overdoes it that there's it's just
47. 1:58very
48. 1:59It's very real. Even as I I watch it,
49. 2:02there's the moments where he when he
50. 2:03snaps his bones and he laughs. Like I
51. 2:06was smiling as I was kind of because
52. 2:07that was that was this
53. 2:09It was just the ecstasy of I'm not going
54. 2:12to die here. I'm going to get out of
55. 2:13this place. How accurate is it? That
56. 2:17factually speaking, it's I mean in the
57. 2:1990th percentile kind of range that there
58. 2:21are a few things that that were
59. 2:24adapted licensed
60. 2:27fictionalized even that but to the
61. 2:29effect of taking you deeper into the
62. 2:30story into the real experience that I
63. 2:32had.
