- 0:01hello everyone.
- 0:03This time I will talk about Ashikaga Yoshikazu.
- 0:06Ashikaga Yoshikazu was the son of Ashikaga Yoshimochi.
- 0:09Yoshikazu was seen early on as a potential successor to Yoshimochi.
- 0:14He came of age at the age of 11.
- 0:17So let's take a look at Ashikaga Yoshikazu right away.
- 0:21Yoshikazu became Shogun while Yoshimochi was still alive.
- 0:25The fourth Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimochi, Retirement and handed over the Shogun to his son.
- 0:31Ashikaga Yoshikazu then became the fifth Shogun.
- 0:34Yoshikazu was 17 years old at the time.
- 0:37Therefore, Ashikaga Yoshimochi.
- 0:40However, Yoshikazu was sickly.
- 0:42Even after becoming a Shogun, he suffered from illness several times.
- 0:45He died at the young age of 19, two years after becoming a Shogun.
- 0:53It's too short to end it here.
- 0:55So I'd like to talk about what happened after Yoshikazu's death.
- 0:58After Ashikaga Yoshikazu's death, Yoshimochi had no sons.
- 1:02Thus, the Muromachi Shogunate was left without a Shogun.
- 1:05However, Yoshimochi did not return to the Shogun or appoint a new Shogun.
- 1:11The former Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshikazu, ruled the country as the Muromachi Palace.
- 1:17Originally, Yoshimochi was the one who held real power behind the 5th Shogun.
- 1:21So there was no problem even when the fifth Shogun was gone.
- 1:25However, two years later, Ashikaga Yoshimochi's swelling worsened and he fell critically ill.
- 1:31Yoshimochi said this just before his death.
- 1:33"Even if I had a son, I would not name a successor."
- 1:37"Let's all discuss and decide on a successor."
- 1:39That was his will.
- 1:40By this time, Shugo and his friends had become stronger.
- 1:43So perhaps he thought there was no point in choosing a successor.
- 1:47It was therefore proposed that the next Shogun be decided by drawing Lot-drawing among Yoshimochi's four younger brothers.
- 1:54Yoshimochi agreed.
- 1:57Therefore, the next Shogun was to be decided by Lot-drawing.
- 2:00However, Yoshimochi said that the results of the Lot-drawing should not be revealed until after his death.
- 2:05Therefore, the Lot-drawing results were opened after Yoshimochi passed away.
- 2:09The person chosen by Lot-drawing was Gien, the head priest of Tendai Grand Abbot, who later Ashikaga Yoshinori.
- 2:15So, in the next video I will talk about Ashikaga Yoshinori.
- 2:19See you in the next video.
