- 0:00Hey guys. Today we have a film
- 0:03requested by one of our viewers,
- 0:05probably one of the most shocking and
- 0:07controversial movies in cinema history,
- 0:10from Italian director Pier Paolo
- 0:12Pasolini, Salò, or the 120 Days of
- 0:14Sodom, released in 1975.
- 0:23Everything is fine when experienced to
- 0:25excess. The plot tells us about the
- 0:28final days of Italian fascism in the
- 0:30Italian region of Salò, where the most
- 0:32powerful people—the President, the
- 0:34Judge, the Bishop, and the Duke—
- 0:36indulge in perverse amusements with
- 0:38young people they are holding captive
- 0:40in a mansion.
- 0:42In this world, our will is the only law
- 0:44. Before moving on to the pros and cons
- 0:47of the film, it is worth mentioning
- 0:48what a unique and unconventional
- 0:50director we are dealing with. I
- 0:52familiarized myself with his most
- 0:54famous Trilogy of Life, which includes
- 0:56The Decameron, The Canterbury Tales,
- 0:58and Arabian Nights. And I realized that
- 1:01, frankly, this is not my director; his
- 1:03style is filled with eroticism, nudity,
- 1:05and ironic storytelling, with a
- 1:07deliberately sloppy, even crude
- 1:09technical side, featuring overacting
- 1:11and even non-professional actors.
- 1:13Ultimately, neither the underlying
- 1:14message nor the social subtext can fix
- 1:16the negative impression left by the
- 1:18project. But in this case, we have the
- 1:20first film from his Trilogy of Death,
- 1:23filled with violence, despair, and
- 1:25hatred for the ruling system of that
- 1:27time. It must be noted that the
- 1:29director was openly gay and held
- 1:31pro-communist views. It is from this
- 1:33perspective that the film gains a more
- 1:35personal impression, especially the
- 1:36finale. Especially since the director
- 1:39was murdered shortly after the film's
- 1:41release. So, the first reason to watch
- 1:49the film is the unprecedented level of
- 1:51violence for its time, the perversity
- 1:53of many scenes, full nudity, the
- 1:55consumption of excrement, as well as
- 1:56sadomasochistic scenes and scenes of
- 1:58human degradation. The film was banned
- 2:01in many countries, especially in Europe
- 2:03and particularly in Germany. The
- 2:05director received a huge amount of
- 2:07hatred and criticism for his
- 2:08uncompromising nature and radicalism.
- 2:10And here it is worth noting how great
- 2:12the author's courage was, despite all
- 2:14the flaws in his style. The second
- 2:16reason is the abundance of cultural
- 2:18references. For instance, the film is
- 2:19divided into thematic chapters that
- 2:21refer us to The Divine Comedy. Examples
- 2:23include the Ante-Inferno, the Circle of
- 2:25Manias, the Circle of, and the
- 2:26Circle of Blood. The film itself is a
- 2:28loose adaptation of the Marquis de
- 2:30Sade's novel, The 120 Days of Sodom.
- 2:32And the film, in general, preserves the
- 2:34authorial position and core ideas of
- 2:36the source material, especially in the
- 2:38contempt and hatred for religion and
- 2:40authority, which are presented here as
- 2:42perverts and psychopaths bored by
- 2:43idleness and routine. Plus, the quoting
- 2:46of Nietzsche and Proust elevates the
- 2:48rather base genre content of the film
- 2:50to another level, although it is hard
- 2:52to notice, given everything the viewer
- 2:54will see. In essence, the only true
- 2:57anarchy is the anarchy of power. The
- 3:00third reason is the main message and
- 3:02metaphor of the film, which lies in the
- 3:04ridicule and satire of the modern
- 3:06system and authority, and the
- 3:07exploitation of the weak and poor by
- 3:09the rich and powerful. The idea is not
- 3:11new, but the form the author gave his
- 3:13film, the boldness, the grotesque, and
- 3:15the crossing of all boundaries of
- 3:17decency command a certain respect from
- 3:19me for the creator. Now it will be very
- 3:29difficult to satisfy me. Well, now
- 3:30let's talk about the problems. And here
- 3:32, even if not by much, they are
- 3:34critical enough for many viewers. The
- 3:36first is the simply dreadful and
- 3:38off-putting acting performance of
- 3:40almost everyone involved. This applies
- 3:43to all the director's most famous and
- 3:45past works. The actors are mercilessly
- 3:47overacting, or it feels like they are
- 3:48in front of a camera for the first time
- 3:50. Because of this, the unnaturalness
- 3:52reaches some unseen peak. And the
- 3:54tension of the inexperienced performers
- 3:56is transmitted to the viewer, which is
- 3:57probably the scariest part.
- 3:59No, go ahead and tell me.
- 4:01There is a lot of splashing.
- 4:06The second reason is the weak technical
- 4:08component, except for the music. The
- 4:11music by Ennio Morricone is probably
- 4:12the only thing in the film that I have
- 4:14no complaints about. Otherwise, the
- 4:15shaky camera, dirt on the lens, weak
- 4:18sound design, and poor original dubbing
- 4:20. All this leaves such a crude and
- 4:22careless impression of the work done.
- 4:24Even though in terms of narrative, this
- 4:26is the director's highest quality film,
- 4:28considering his past works where
- 4:30quality editing and a smooth, coherent
- 4:32narrative were a rare exception. But
- 4:34even at its peak, the editing of the
- 4:36narrative is quite mediocre,
- 4:38for I respect all tastes and
- 4:40eccentricities. No matter how horrible
- 4:44they are, any perversions deserve
- 4:46respect.
- 4:47In the end, honestly, this picture
- 4:48leaves me with a rather ambivalent
- 4:49impression. Like, frankly, all the work
- 4:52of this director. With unprecedented
- 4:55radicalism, boldness, and
- 4:57uncompromising nature, all the
- 4:59director's ideas collide with a low
- 5:01budget and the very weak technical
- 5:03aspects of all his films. At the same
- 5:05time, almost everything works against
- 5:07the director, except for his vision and
- 5:09message. However, this picture can
- 5:11definitely be called the director's
- 5:13best creation, given the state of his
- 5:15previous works. But at the same time,
- 5:18it is very difficult to recommend this
- 5:19work to everyone, and I won't. But for
- 5:21all those tired of modern political
- 5:23correctness who crave scathing, biting,
- 5:26and spectacular satire on modern power
- 5:28and capitalism, then by all means, you
- 5:30should definitely watch this film. Just
- 5:33keep in mind the style and
- 5:35peculiarities of this director, and
- 5:36otherwise, it is definitely a film
- 5:38worth watching.
