12 - Viewer Background Settings - TouchDesigner Tutorial: Beginner Crash Course — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00As you've been going through this last
- 0:02section introducing you to the chop
- 0:05family, you may have wondered why your
- 0:08particular version of the network that
- 0:12we built has a checkerboard background
- 0:16like I do in this example rather than
- 0:20the black background that you saw in the
- 0:23previous recordings. This actually has
- 0:26to do with a setting in TouchDesigner
- 0:29that we have the ability to change
- 0:32rather than there being some kind of
- 0:34difference in the way that you've set
- 0:35things up. By default in TouchDesigner,
- 0:38you'll see this checkerboard pattern
- 0:40layered behind your texture to show you
- 0:44that there is some level of transparency
- 0:47contained within it. So if you don't see
- 0:50the checkerboard, you have no
- 0:52transparency in your particular texture.
- 0:55If you do see the checkerboard, there is
- 0:57some level of transparency. And like I
- 1:01mentioned before, we have the ability to
- 1:03change this behavior if we so choose,
- 1:06which is done via the edit preferences
- 1:09dialog. So that is alt and P if you want
- 1:13to use the shortcut or edit preferences.
- 1:16On Mac, I believe you have to open up
- 1:19the TouchDesigner drop-down in the Mac
- 1:21menu bar at the top and choose
- 1:23preferences from there, but either way,
- 1:25you'll want to end up at the preferences
- 1:28window. And then we'll head over to the
- 1:30tops page. You'll notice here that we
- 1:33have this viewer background setting. And
- 1:36as we mentioned before, this is set by
- 1:39default to checkerboard. If you set this
- 1:41to black and then choose save, you'll
- 1:45see that the checkerboard texture has
- 1:48been replaced with a black backdrop.
- 1:51Now in general, especially for beginners
- 1:54to the program, we would recommend
- 1:56against using this viewer background
- 1:59mode because it's not easy to then
- 2:01identify where transparency is located
- 2:05within your texture. It's very easy to
- 2:07confuse a texture that has transparency
- 2:10with a texture that does not. And so in
- 2:13general, we recommend for our beginner
- 2:16users to set this viewer background to
- 2:19checkerboard, which again is the default
- 2:22behavior. So I hope that clears up any
- 2:24potential questions that you may have
- 2:26had as you were working through the
- 2:29intro to CHOPs.
