12 Logo Design Tools YOU NEED TO KNOW in Illustrator — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00in the next 10 minutes you're going to
- 0:02learn 12 different tools and techniques
- 0:04that can be pretty much used to design
- 0:06any logo so here's the logo we'll be
- 0:09creating which may look familiar along
- 0:11with these 12 tools and techniques that
- 0:12can be combined together to create all
- 0:14sorts of logo designs in Adobe
- 0:16Illustrator so first up the ellipse tool
- 0:20righto so as with any good logo we need
- 0:22to start by creating a new document and
- 0:24I'm working with a 1920x 1080 pixel
- 0:26artboard with a color mode set to RGB
- 0:29the resolution is also 72 PPI now that's
- 0:32done let's click create now from the
- 0:34toolbar on the left we can select the
- 0:35ellipse tool and then click anywhere on
- 0:38the artboard and create an ellipse
- 0:39that's 300X 300 and from the bottom of
- 0:42the toolbar let's set the filter none
- 0:44and then thicken up that stroke and if
- 0:46you're new to illustrator a stroke is
- 0:48basically an outline or a border there
- 0:50we go suitably thick next let's do this
- 0:54again and this time we're going to set
- 0:56the size as 360x 360 so a little bit
- 0:59bigger now let's select both shapes and
- 1:01align these to the bottom Edge now I'm
- 1:03going to select the shape on the right
- 1:05and move this to the left holding shift
- 1:07so it stays perfectly horizontal just
- 1:09enough that it overlaps like this now
- 1:12using the zoom tool I'm going to zoom in
- 1:14nice and close and then switch over to
- 1:15outline mode which is command or control
- 1:17Y and now we're going to move on to the
- 1:19line segment tool and this does exactly
- 1:21what you'd think it draws lines and we
- 1:23can select it click and drag to draw a
- 1:25line in any direction or we can hold
- 1:27shift and snap this to a 45° angle now
- 1:30let's zoom in nice and close for this
- 1:31next step I'm going to try and line up
- 1:33the line we've just created with the top
- 1:36right edge of the left Circle and once
- 1:38you think you've got it hold shift and
- 1:40press up once to move the line upwards
- 1:42and now that's done we can move on to
- 1:43the scissor
- 1:44tool so let's go and select this from
- 1:47the toolbar you can find this by
- 1:48clicking and holding on the Eraser and
- 1:50it's under there and I'm going to make a
- 1:52cut on the circle that lines up with the
- 1:54line and that's literally it for this
- 1:56tool and you'll see why in a moment next
- 1:58we're going to use the direct selection
- 1:59tool
- 2:00and this one's right up there at the top
- 2:02of the toolbar and we can use this to
- 2:04select individual anchor points or click
- 2:06in between two anchor points and press
- 2:07delete to remove and if you find a stray
- 2:09Anchor Point like this just select it
- 2:11and press delete again now we've removed
- 2:13that segment let's line up the line
- 2:15again geez this terminology is confusing
- 2:17but that's exactly what we're doing
- 2:18we're lining up these two end points
- 2:20which nicely leads us into joining
- 2:24paths so with the direct selection tool
- 2:26let's drag over those two end anchor
- 2:28points go to object path and select join
- 2:32and now these are joined the circle and
- 2:34the line that we created are now one
- 2:36shape again let's press command or
- 2:37control y to switch back to preview mode
- 2:39now I'm going to select the bigger
- 2:41Circle and hold shift and use the right
- 2:43arrow key just to nudge this to the
- 2:44right again let's grab the scissor tool
- 2:46and make a cut where the two paths
- 2:48overlap and now the Cut's been made I
- 2:50can hold shift and use the left Arrow
- 2:52key to nudge it back again we're going
- 2:53to use the direct selection tool to
- 2:55delete the excess and I can freely move
- 2:57this Anchor Point around or I could hold
- 2:59shift to keep it sna to that 45° angle
- 3:02okay that's all looking good now with
- 3:04the main selection tool and the shape
- 3:05selected we can go over to the stroke
- 3:07properties and set the cap type to round
- 3:09and this will round off the end points
- 3:11of any paths now you can see here I'm
- 3:13using the direct selection tool to
- 3:14adjust the length again or you can use
- 3:16the arrow keys to adjust the position of
- 3:17an anchor point so whichever method
- 3:19works best for you okay once again we're
- 3:21going to switch into outline mode and
- 3:23select the line segment tool and we're
- 3:25basically going to do the same thing
- 3:26again but for the other Circle so let's
- 3:29zoom in nice and close line up the line
- 3:32once we've got it lined up roughly let's
- 3:34hold shift and nudge it out with the
- 3:36arrow keys go and grab the scissor tool
- 3:38you can nudge it back into position
- 3:39briefly if you're not sure where to make
- 3:41the cut once you've got a good idea go
- 3:43and make a cut on the circle and then
- 3:45use the direct selection tool to delete
- 3:47the excess and remember to check for any
- 3:49stray anchor points as well because if
- 3:50you don't remove these now they may
- 3:52cause you problems later in the process
- 3:54okay all looking good let's zoom in nice
- 3:56and close line these up as best we can
- 3:59and then using the direct selection tool
- 4:01drag over both of the objects and join
- 4:03them together and the shortcut for this
- 4:04is command or control J now before we
- 4:07move on to the next tool this video is
- 4:08sponsored by one of my favorite
- 4:10platforms invar

- 4:44month with an annual subscription and
- 4:46like I said it's one of my favorite
- 4:47platforms like what you get for your
- 4:48money is just insane and there's even a
- 4:51link below if you'd like to grab a free
- 4:537-Day trial and just try it out for
- 4:55yourself okay next let's look at the
- 4:57shape Builder tool so first let's drag
- 4:59over everything to select it and the
- 5:01shapee Builder tool can be found under
- 5:03the Live Paint tool if you don't see it
- 5:04here and if you hold down alter option
- 5:06and hover over different parts of your
- 5:08shape they will become highlighted and
- 5:10you can click to remove now I'm going to
- 5:12use all of the tools we've covered so
- 5:13far to just make a few minor
- 5:27adjustments there we go you can see it's
- 5:29starting to come together next let's
- 5:31select this and move this over to the
- 5:33left hand side go to edit copy and then
- 5:36edit and paste in place and then using
- 5:38the arrow keys I can move this copy out
- 5:40to the right copy and paste in place and
- 5:42then move this one out to the right as
- 5:43well next we're going to look at
- 5:46expanding so if we drag over the middle
- 5:48shape we can then go to object and down
- 5:51to expand leave fill and stroke selected
- 5:54and click okay this basically converts
- 5:56the stroke to a regular shape with a
- 5:58fill and we can select the the stroke
- 6:00and then give this a color and it
- 6:01doesn't matter what color you pick but
- 6:03for now I'm going to go with a nice rich
- 6:05blue then let's go and increase the
- 6:07stroke weight I think I'll go for
- 6:09something maybe around 20 but actually
- 6:12one thing we need to do first is make
- 6:13sure the stroke is aligned to the
- 6:15outside edge and you can see this
- 6:17changes things slightly so let's go and
- 6:18tweak that stroke again I think I'll go
- 6:20for around 23 and if I then switch back
- 6:23into outline mode and select the shape
- 6:24on the far right go to object and expand
- 6:27and if you look closely you can see how
- 6:28the process of expanding changes the
- 6:30geometry of a shape right next up we're
- 6:33going to use the Pathfinder tools now
- 6:35you can see the selected design has a
- 6:37few pieces that overlap and I can use
- 6:39this top left option to unite these
- 6:41separate pieces into a single shape next
- 6:43we're going to select the ey dropper
- 6:45tool now this is located in the toolbar
- 6:47but you can also press the shortcut I to
- 6:49access this tool and we can use this to
- 6:51copy properties from one shape to
- 6:53another now that's done I'm going to
- 6:54select the shape on the far right and
- 6:56swap the fill and the stroke I'm then
- 6:58going to double click the color and
- 7:00select white all the way in the top left
- 7:03corner now let's switch back into
- 7:05outline mode and if I select the middle
- 7:07shape go to object and expand appearance
- 7:09you can see the geometry changes and
- 7:11becomes much more complex once again
- 7:13we're going to select the shape Builder
- 7:14tool and one of the main uses of this
- 7:16tool is that you can click and drag
- 7:18through individual shapes and combine
- 7:20them together into a single shape or you
- 7:22can hold Al or option to remove from the
- 7:23shape which is exactly what I'm doing
- 7:25here now if I drag over one of these you
- 7:27can see they're both grouped together
- 7:29but if I if I use the direct selection
- 7:30tool I can select only one go to edit
- 7:33and down to not copy cut and this does
- 7:36copy it but it also removes it at the
- 7:37same time we can then paste it back in
- 7:39place and with the main selection tool
- 7:41drag over all of the pieces and use the
- 7:43Pathfinders unite option to combine them
- 7:46into a single shape do this for both
- 7:48pieces and this is why we had another
- 7:50duplicate of the logo design it was
- 7:52literally to create these two pieces now
- 7:54let's expand the appearance of the shape
- 7:55on the far right and then use the direct
- 7:57selection tool to select that inner
- 7:59white space and press delete or
- 8:00backspace to remove now let's select
- 8:02these two seemingly random pieces and
- 8:04from the Color Picker make them black
- 8:06that's all the way in the bottom left
- 8:08corner and then hold shift and use the
- 8:10right arrow key to nudge these into
- 8:11position and then go up to object
- 8:13arrange and bring to front and now you
- 8:15can see exactly what these pieces were
- 8:17used for now we can select the version
- 8:19on the left this was a backup in case
- 8:21things went terribly wrong and now I'm
- 8:22going to move the superfinal version
- 8:24back into the center now if I switch
- 8:26back into outline mode once again we do
- 8:28have a very complicated sh shape and I'm
- 8:30going to use the shape Builder tool to
- 8:31drag through all of these individual
- 8:33pieces and unite them together into a
- 8:35single shape and remember if you want to
- 8:36do the opposite and subtract or knock
- 8:38out from the selection just hold alter
- 8:40option when using the shape Builder tool
- 8:42now sometimes it'll do this and remove
- 8:44the color don't worry your shape is
- 8:45still there just reselect it and then
- 8:48reapply the desired color and
- 8:50considering this is based on the
- 8:51Creative Cloud logo let's go with a red
- 8:53and now I'm going to select both of
- 8:54these pieces on the inside and set the
- 8:57fill color to white
- 9:01nice okay next we're going to take a
- 9:03look at compound paths okay so we have
- 9:05these two inside shapes they are both
- 9:07filled with white however we want to
- 9:09knock these out and make them
- 9:10transparent so with them both selected
- 9:12go to object compound path and select
- 9:14make illustrator will now treat these as
- 9:17a single shape and with everything
- 9:18selected we can use minus front in the
- 9:20Pathfinder panel to knock the top shape
- 9:23out of the bottom shape essentially
- 9:24knocking the white out of the red and we
- 9:27can check that it's worked by just
- 9:28creating a random shape sh giving it a
- 9:30random color and then sending it to the
- 9:32back and if you can see random shape
- 9:34behind just like this you know that it's
- 9:36worked correctly and we're done with
- 9:38that now so let's delete said shape next
- 9:40rulers and guides pretty much Essential
- 9:42for lining anything up which is what
- 9:44we're going to do now so let's go to the
- 9:46rulers menu and show rulers now my shape
- 9:49is a bit wonky at the moment so if I
- 9:50drag down from that top ruler I can
- 9:52create a guide as you can see it's on
- 9:54the wonk so if I just rotate this from
- 9:56one of the corners I can try and line
- 9:58this up so my entire shape is perfectly
- 10:00horizontal matching the guide and lastly
- 10:03everyone's favorite but not really the
- 10:05pencil so this is located towards the
- 10:07top of the toolbar and you can use this
- 10:09to draw custom shapes now in this
- 10:11example I'm going to zoom in on the
- 10:12bottom of the logo I can then use the
- 10:14penol together with illustrator smart
- 10:16guides to draw a triangle to flatten the
- 10:18bottom edge of the logo and as before
- 10:20you could select everything and then
- 10:22unite this using the Pathfinder tools
- 10:24however I'm actually going to undo this
- 10:26because I like the logo without this
- 10:27flattened Edge but there we go go
- 10:29there's a look at the pencil regardless
- 10:31and when using the shape Builder tool
- 10:32you may get these stray anchor points
- 10:34left over and this is just something
- 10:35that happens so it's always worth
- 10:37zooming in nice and close and checking
- 10:38your final design here for example you
- 10:40can see one path that belongs to the
- 10:42logo and alongside if I zoom in very
- 10:45close you can see another stray path
- 10:47that's just randomly decided to stop by
- 10:49so we can select this with the direct
- 10:50selection tool and remove it lastly if
- 10:52we Zoom back out we can now get a good
- 10:54look at the final logo design and there
- 10:57we go my friends we have reached the end
- 10:58of the video thank you to invat elements
- 11:00for sponsoring this one if You' like
- 11:02more logo design I've got another video
- 11:03right here or we've got YouTube's pick
- 11:06over here as always though you've been
- 11:07absolutely fantastic take care and I'll
- 11:10see you next time
