- 0:05Today, I would like to speak about the
- 0:07early and latter rain of the Holy
- 0:10Spirit. It is from James chapter 5,
- 0:12verses 7 and 8. Be patient, therefore,
- 0:16brothers and sisters, until the coming
- 0:19of the Lord. See how the farmer waits
- 0:23for the precious fruit of the earth,
- 0:25being patient about it, until it
- 0:27receives the early and the latter rains
- 0:29. You also, be patient. Establish your
- 0:33hearts. The coming of the Lord is at
- 0:36hand.
- 0:39Our country has four distinct seasons,
- 0:42right? Spring, summer, autumn, and
- 0:45winter. That is why we often describe
- 0:48our lives in terms of the four seasons.
- 0:53The children sitting here in front
- 0:54would be spring. Then, young and
- 0:58middle-aged adults are summer. Next are
- 1:02those in their 60s and 70s. Nowadays, I
- 1:05am not sure if we can even count those
- 1:07in their 80s as autumn. And when you
- 1:10pass 90, it is winter. When we say this
- 1:14, we nod our heads and think, "Yes,
- 1:16that is truly how life is." The writers
- 1:23of the Bible used the climate of
- 1:26Palestine and farming practices not
- 1:30only to provide lessons but also to
- 1:33explain how God's Holy Spirit works. A
- 1:40unique feature of Palestine is the
- 1:43early and latter rain. This is
- 1:45extremely important for farming. Some
- 1:50Bibles focus on literal translation,
- 1:54while others focus on paraphrase.
- 1:59Translations like the Common
- 2:01Translation, the Easy-to-Read Version,
- 2:04the Living Bible, and the GNT (Good
- 2:06News Translation) use various
- 2:08approaches. Also, versions like the ISV
- 2:11(International Standard Version) and
- 2:14the NIV (New International Version)
- 2:16translate them as "autumn rain" and "
- 2:18spring rain" to make it easier for
- 2:20modern readers to understand. The
- 2:24climate in Judea and Israel is divided
- 2:27into a dry season and a rainy season.
- 2:32The dry season, usually from April to
- 2:35October, has a tropical climate, where
- 2:38a long, hot, and dry summer passes. And
- 2:44from November to the following March,
- 2:47it has a temperate climate, where they
- 2:50experience a mild and humid winter. Now
- 2:55, if you look at the rainy season here.
- 2:58Uh. The early rain falls between
- 3:02October and November. As you can see
- 3:05here, the ground is completely dried
- 3:08out and has become hard. You cannot
- 3:11even plow the field here. Because it is
- 3:14too parched and dry. But then the early
- 3:17rain comes lightly. Then the ground
- 3:21that was so hard becomes soft, allowing
- 3:24it to be plowed and seeds to be sown.
- 3:29After that, the rainy season begins,
- 3:31which is also called winter rain or
- 3:33monsoon rain. Rain falls intensively
- 3:37from December to February. Then, around
- 3:42March or April, the final "latter rain"
- 3:46falls. If there is a climate change and
- 3:49that latter rain ends too early, even
- 3:53though the crops have grown, there will
- 3:56be problems with the final ripening and
- 3:59maturing. Then, the harvest yield would
- 4:02drop significantly. Therefore, the
- 4:05early rain is very important for sowing
- 4:07seeds, and the latter rain is very
- 4:09important for the harvest. Why do we
- 4:14call the Holy Spirit the "early rain"
- 4:17and "latter rain"? Does the Holy Spirit
- 4:20work in our daily lives, or not? Uh,
- 4:24the Holy Spirit is working in our daily
- 4:26lives right now. In my normal routine,
- 4:31I wake up in the morning, eat, take a
- 4:34shower, go to my study, and prepare for
- 4:38my ministry. I lead that kind of life
- 4:43regularly, but when the weekend comes,
- 4:45I attend revivals or go to special
- 4:47seminars. So, while the Holy Spirit
- 4:52generally works in people's hearts to
- 4:55teach, guide, inspire, and lead them to
- 4:58repentance, there are two special
- 5:00ministries related to the gospel work.
- 5:06The work of the Spirit at the start of
- 5:10the church is called the "early rain,"
- 5:14and the work of the Spirit that
- 5:17finishes the gospel mission just before
- 5:21the final Second Coming is described as
- 5:24the "latter rain" ministry. Even in the
- 5:31Old Testament, rain was used as a
- 5:34symbol of the Holy Spirit. In Isaiah
- 5:3832:15, it says, "Until the Spirit is
- 5:42poured upon us from on high," referring
- 5:46to rain pouring down. So, it uses the
- 5:50imagery of falling rain to describe how
- 5:54God's Holy Spirit would be given. "Then
- 5:58the wilderness will become a fruitful
- 5:59field, and the fruitful field will be
- 6:01considered a forest." This This
- 6:05prophecy in Isaiah 32 symbolizes the
- 6:08great reformation led by King Hezekiah.
- 6:12The revival that would result from that
- 6:16reformation was described using the
- 6:19metaphor of rain. This made it much
- 6:23easier for the Israelites to understand
- 6:25. Just as we compare human life to the
- 6:28four seasons. However, while this
- 6:32prophecy was partially fulfilled during
- 6:35Hezekiah's reformation, its more
- 6:37perfect fulfillment takes place at
- 6:39Pentecost. So, when the Holy Spirit was
- 6:46given at Pentecost, and Peter went out
- 6:49after they received the Spirit and
- 6:53spoke in tongues—when many people
- 6:56thought they were drunk—he said, "God
- 6:59says, in the last days, I will pour out
- 7:03my Spirit on all flesh." He meant that
- 7:09this was the work of the early rain,
- 7:11not that they were drunk. Hmm. Now,
- 7:16let's take a look at the early rain,
- 7:18the autumn rain of the Holy Spirit.
- 7:24Before He was crucified, the
- 7:26resurrected Jesus promised that He
- 7:28would meet His disciples in Galilee
- 7:31after He rose from the dead. And after
- 7:35meeting them by the Sea of Galilee, He
- 7:37gave this command to the apostles. "Do
- 7:41not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the
- 7:43gift my Father promised, which you have
- 7:46heard me speak about.""For John
- 7:50baptized with water, but in a few days
- 7:53you will be baptized with the Holy
- 7:55Spirit." We call this baptism of the
- 7:59Holy Spirit. That is what most
- 8:01Protestant churches call it. You will
- 8:03be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Why
- 8:08did Jesus tell the disciples to wait
- 8:10for the baptism of the Holy Spirit
- 8:13instead of just sending them out after
- 8:15His resurrection? First, it was because
- 8:20the disciples were too incompetent and
- 8:23weak. The people who followed Jesus—
- 8:27well, Jesus started His public ministry
- 8:30around the age of 30, right? So, the
- 8:34disciples must have been in their early
- 8:3630s or late 20s. They were all young
- 8:40people. They had no social experience,
- 8:42and they were not from the leadership
- 8:44class in society. Yes. They had no
- 8:46money and hadn't been highly educated
- 8:48either. And because they were going to
- 8:52face much opposition and obstruction,
- 8:55they could never have started God's
- 8:57work in that state. Uh, Jesus sent the
- 9:04disciples out even before the cross,
- 9:07and when He sent them, it says here
- 9:10that He gave them power and authority.
- 9:15But what is power, and what is
- 9:16authority? Authority, first of all, is
- 9:20exousia. It refers to the right or
- 9:23privilege to exercise power. For
- 9:25example, in John 1:12, it says to those
- 9:28who received Him and believed in His
- 9:30name, He gave them what to become
- 9:32children of God? He gave them the
- 9:34authority. This means we have gained
- 9:37the right to become children of God.
- 9:40That is what it means. We have the
- 9:42right. However, having the right alone
- 9:45is not enough to do the work. Just
- 9:48because someone becomes a manager or a
- 9:50president doesn't mean they will
- 9:52necessarily make the company thrive.
- 9:55They have the position, but what else
- 9:57must they have? They must have the
- 9:59power. That power is dynamis. Dynamis
- 10:04refers to the strength or ability to
- 10:07carry out a task. So, when Jesus said,
- 10:11"Stay in this city until you are
- 10:13clothed with power from on high," that
- 10:16power is dynamis. The word dynamite
- 10:20comes from this Greek word, dynamis.
- 10:25That is the word that came from it. The
- 10:31disciples followed Jesus 'instructions
- 10:33and went to the upper room where they
- 10:35were staying; our Bible omits it, but
- 10:38there is a definite article before "
- 10:40upper room." That upper room, the upper
- 10:43room where the disciples often gathered
- 10:46, it is a well-known upper room. You
- 10:49know which upper room this is, right?
- 10:51We usually call it the Upper Room of
- 10:54Mark. Uh, Mark is also known as John
- 11:00Mark. Uh, in our Bible, among the four
- 11:03Gospels, there is the Gospel of Mark.
- 11:06He is the one who wrote this book. His
- 11:09mother is Mary. Not Jesus' mother Mary,
- 11:14but another Mary, and that Mary is
- 11:17Barnabas's cousin. Yes. You know
- 11:20Barnabas the encourager, right? Yes.
- 11:24Now, what they did here to receive
- 11:26dynamis, to receive the early rain of
- 11:29the Holy Spirit, was to join together
- 11:32with one heart and devote themselves to
- 11:35prayer. What must we do to receive the
- 11:39Holy Spirit? We must pray a lot. Now
- 11:44then, when they prayed like this, the
- 11:47day of Pentecost arrived; what kind of
- 11:50things happened then? When they were
- 11:54all gathered in one place, suddenly
- 11:56there came a sound from heaven like a
- 11:57rushing mighty wind, and it filled the
- 11:59whole house where they were sitting.
- 12:04Wait. It doesn’t mean that a wind
- 12:07actually blew. As you see here, it
- 12:11wasn’t an actual wind, but a sound
- 12:14like a wind. Yes. The word for wind
- 12:18here is "pneuma" in the original text,
- 12:20which refers to breath or respiration.
- 12:23So it means that a physical change
- 12:26occurs in those who receive the Holy
- 12:28Spirit, and their breathing deepens.
- 12:32After Jesus rose from the dead, He
- 12:35appeared to the disciples gathered on
- 12:37the evening of the first day and sent
- 12:39them out again. He said, "As the Father
- 12:42has sent Me, I also send you." Before
- 12:46we preach the gospel of God, there is
- 12:49something we must do first, which is
- 12:52when He breathed on them and said, "
- 12:55Receive the Holy Spirit." It says "
- 13:00breathed on them," and in many English
- 13:05Bibles like the NIV or NASB, it is
- 13:09translated as "He breathed on them and
- 13:14said." This is much closer to the
- 13:16original text. So, He breathed into the
- 13:19disciples and told them to receive the
- 13:22Holy Spirit. "Receive" here is "labete,
- 13:28" which means to welcome or accept. In
- 13:31other words, when you receive the Holy
- 13:33Spirit, the person who receives the
- 13:37Holy Spirit does not become a person
- 13:40with superpowers. The source of the
- 13:47apostles 'power did not come from the
- 13:50apostles themselves, but the power of
- 13:53the Holy Spirit within them was
- 13:56manifested when they welcomed the Holy
- 14:00Spirit.
- 14:01Amen.
- 14:01Yes. When we receive the Holy Spirit,
- 14:05we don't become superhuman. It is the
- 14:07Holy Spirit within us who works. This
- 14:12is a preliminary and partial
- 14:15fulfillment of Jesus' promise to send
- 14:20the Helper. Even then, they received
- 14:22the Holy Spirit, but they received Him
- 14:24partially. Because these disciples
- 14:27hadn't gone out to do the work yet. Yes
- 14:29. On the day of Pentecost, they felt
- 14:34the Holy Spirit working within them,
- 14:37accompanied by a sound like a rushing,
- 14:41mighty wind. Then, there appeared to
- 14:45them tongues as of fire, distributing
- 14:47themselves, and they rested on each one
- 14:50of them; you need to look at this
- 14:51carefully as well. It doesn’t mean
- 14:54that fire actually ignited here. What
- 14:57does it say here? It wasn’t actual
- 15:01fire, but rather things like tongues of
- 15:05fire, meaning a bright light like a
- 15:09flame appeared in the house, and it
- 15:12split like flames and appeared over
- 15:16people's heads. But this didn't appear
- 15:22forever; looking at the Greek tense for
- 15:25"rested on," it is written in the past
- 15:28tense. So, it didn't stay lit; it
- 15:33flashed and then disappeared. However,
- 15:38even though these visible signs
- 15:41disappeared, the effect of the Holy
- 15:44Spirit's work continued forever for the
- 15:47disciples. Yes. And so, these people
- 15:52were filled with the Holy Spirit. So,
- 15:55baptism in the Holy Spirit and being
- 15:56filled with the Holy Spirit, baptism of
- 15:58the Spirit and fullness of the Spirit
- 16:00are the same experience. All of them
- 16:04were filled with the Holy Spirit and
- 16:07began to speak in other tongues as the
- 16:09Spirit enabled them. Notice here, it
- 16:13says "other tongues." Meaning it was
- 16:16not incoherent mumbling, but they spoke
- 16:19clear, foreign languages. It does not
- 16:22mean that if you receive the Spirit,
- 16:24you speak in tongues. Rather, it means
- 16:27that by being filled with the Holy
- 16:30Spirit, they spoke in foreign languages
- 16:32and began to evangelize to the people.
- 16:38Speaking in tongues alone in a state of
- 16:40ecstasy appears later in the Corinthian
- 16:43church, but in Acts, it was speaking to
- 16:45people who could not understand Aramaic
- 16:48. At that time, the people of Israel
- 16:51used Aramaic. Jesus also used Aramaic.
- 16:56Hebrew was only used by scholars,
- 16:59priests, and that class of people. So
- 17:02they went out directly to the
- 17:04foreigners gathered there and preached
- 17:06the gospel in their languages. If you
- 17:10look at the commentary, It says this—
- 17:14being filled with the Spirit was not a
- 17:17simple movement of the Spirit. Our
- 17:20commentary translates this "moving" as
- 17:21"movement," but it is much more
- 17:23accurate to translate it as "impulse"
- 17:24or "inspiration." It was not a simple
- 17:28inspiration of the Spirit. It was not
- 17:30merely the breath of the Spirit either.
- 17:33It was about filling the disciples. It
- 17:38was about filling them up. It is the
- 17:41filling of their hearts and minds with
- 17:43power. It was the Holy Spirit taking
- 17:49complete possession of them. From this
- 17:52moment on, the church became an
- 17:53instrument of the Holy Spirit. This is
- 17:57called baptism in the Spirit or being
- 17:59filled with the Spirit. In other words,
- 18:02it is the Holy Spirit taking full
- 18:05possession of a person. So, living not
- 18:10by one's own will, purpose, or desire,
- 18:12but by the leading of the Holy Spirit
- 18:14—that is what it means to be baptized
- 18:17in the Spirit. To be filled with the
- 18:20Holy Spirit. That is how it is
- 18:22expressed. From this moment on, the
- 18:24church became an instrument of the Holy
- 18:26Spirit. How did that result manifest?
- 18:29On that very day, the day of Pentecost,
- 18:32about three thousand were added to
- 18:35their number. Three thousand people
- 18:38were baptized in a single day. Look at
- 18:41what follows. Acts chapter 2, verse 47.
- 18:44And the Lord added to their number
- 18:46daily those who were being saved. Acts
- 18:48chapter 4, verse 4. Here, the number of
- 18:51men who believed was about five
- 18:52thousand. Considering the demographics
- 18:56even then, there must have been far
- 18:58more women. So, there were likely over
- 19:0215,000 disciples in total. Then, Acts
- 19:04chapter 5, verse 14. Great multitudes
- 19:07of men and women were added. Acts
- 19:08chapter 5, verse 28. When they were
- 19:12told not to teach, they had already
- 19:14filled Jerusalem with their teaching;
- 19:16there was nowhere the gospel hadn't
- 19:18reached. Finally, in Acts chapter 6,
- 19:22the number of disciples increased
- 19:23greatly, and a large number of priests
- 19:25became obedient to the faith. How many
- 19:30Christians were there at this time?
- 19:33Actually, there is no exact record.
- 19:37American sociologist of religion,
- 19:40Rodney Stark, wrote a book titled "The
- 19:43Rise of Christianity," where he
- 19:46estimated that after Jesus established
- 19:50the church around 31 AD, the number of
- 19:54Christians grew to about 1,000 by 40 AD
- 19:57, increasing by 40%every decade. So, by
- 20:03the end of the first century around 100
- 20:06AD, there were 7,500; by 150 AD, 40,000
- 20:09; by 200 AD, 200,000; and by 250 AD, 2
- 20:12million. That means about 2%of the
- 20:15Roman Empire's population had become
- 20:17Christian. Then, by around 300 AD, it
- 20:19reached 6.29 million, which was 10%.
- 20:21That’s incredible. 10%is significant.
- 20:24Finally, Emperor Constantine legalized
- 20:27Christianity in 313 AD, and by around
- 20:30350 AD, the number had already
- 20:32surpassed 33.8 million. This means over
- 20:3656%, more than half of the entire Roman
- 20:38Empire's population, had become
- 20:41Christian. So, how was Christianity
- 20:45able to grow so rapidly in such a short
- 20:50period? In the book "The Rise of
- 20:53Christianity," the factors are
- 20:55summarized into a few points. There
- 21:00were two major plagues in the Roman
- 21:03Empire, in 165 AD and 251 AD. While
- 21:08people fled the cities, Christians
- 21:10stayed behind to care for the sick.
- 21:15Back then, infanticide and abortion
- 21:18were quite common. Some families would
- 21:22even kill baby girls when they were
- 21:24born. Because Christians forbade this,
- 21:27the number of believers grew quickly.
- 21:30They had many children. So, we need to
- 21:33have many children. Also, there was a
- 21:37high regard for women. There was no
- 21:39gender discrimination. Within the
- 21:40church. And women were allowed to
- 21:42attend worship. Yes. Through this, the
- 21:45number of female converts increased,
- 21:48and in a situation where half the
- 21:50population died due to the two plagues,
- 21:52Christianity offered more satisfying
- 21:54explanations for such disasters. Yes.
- 21:57The disciples at the time interpreted
- 21:59these events as the end times,
- 22:00explaining them as signs of the last
- 22:02days. Furthermore, through strong
- 22:05cohesion and mutual aid, they coped
- 22:07better with the disasters, resulting in
- 22:09fewer casualties than the general
- 22:11public. And in the non-face-to-face
- 22:14situations caused by the plagues, it
- 22:16became easier to form new relationships
- 22:18. People couldn't meet others, so they
- 22:19were thrilled when Christians came to
- 22:21visit. Yes. And by not responding to
- 22:25persecutors with violence, but instead
- 22:27praying for them and being willing to
- 22:29be martyred, they gained social trust.
- 22:35I believe that if we recover this
- 22:38spirit of the early church, the gospel
- 22:42can still spread even faster and
- 22:45globally today. How many Christians are
- 22:50there now? According to the report
- 22:54released this January by the Center for
- 22:56the Study of Global Christianity at
- 22:57Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary,
- 22:59here is the current state of global
- 23:00Christianity. The world population is
- 23:02about 8 billion, and the number of
- 23:04Christians is 2.6 billion. 32.5%have
- 23:09become Christians. And there are 4.2
- 23:12million churches worldwide. Isn't it
- 23:16amazing? Starting with those 100 or so
- 23:22fragile disciples of Jesus, it has
- 23:25grown into this incredible religion
- 23:28with 2.6 billion believers. So, as I
- 23:32mentioned earlier, the word "dynamis"
- 23:35is where we get the word "dynamite."
- 23:39The Holy Spirit truly was dynamite that
- 23:44shook the earth. Now, the next point is
- 23:48the Bible. In Matthew chapter 24, Jesus
- 23:53spoke of the signs of the end, and this
- 23:57was the very last one. "And this gospel
- 24:02of the kingdom will be preached in the
- 24:04whole world as a testimony to all
- 24:07nations, and then the end will come."
- 24:11Yes. So, one of the crucial signs of
- 24:15the Second Coming is the spread of the
- 24:18Gospel to the whole world. What is
- 24:24recorded in the New Testament within
- 24:27the Roman Empire, the parts marked in
- 24:29pink, are all the regions where
- 24:31Christianity reached. It reached almost
- 24:34the entire Roman Empire, didn't it?
- 24:38Then, the early church spread beyond
- 24:41the Roman Empire, and Christianity was
- 24:45transmitted along the trade routes by
- 24:49traveling merchants. Here, the Silk
- 24:54Road, marked in blue, stretches from
- 24:57China to the Mediterranean; the Gospel
- 24:59spread along this route as far as China
- 25:02and Mongolia. Next, there is the spice
- 25:06route. It is currently marked in red
- 25:10here. The Gospel also spread to
- 25:14Southeast Asia along this spice route.
- 25:18Then there is tin and lead, from
- 25:20Britain to Carthage. It spread from
- 25:22Britain to Carthage, and tin and lead
- 25:25are ingredients used to make bronze.
- 25:28And in those days, bronze was the
- 25:31material used to make weapons. So,
- 25:33along these trade routes, not only was
- 25:35culture spread, but the Gospel was as
- 25:37well. Next is amber. This part here,
- 25:42marked in green from the Baltic to the
- 25:45Mediterranean—amber is essentially a
- 25:48fossil created when tree resin covers
- 25:51an insect that has landed on a tree.
- 25:56Yes. At the time, people used amber as
- 26:01jewelry, as a talisman for blessings or
- 26:05healing, and since it was tree resin,
- 26:09they also used it as perfume. And they
- 26:14even used it as medicine. So,
- 26:16Christianity spread along the routes
- 26:19where these goods were traded. The
- 26:22reason for this global expansion of
- 26:25Christianity is largely due to a man
- 26:27named William Carey. He is called the
- 26:32father of modern Protestant missions;
- 26:34in 1793, at the age of 32, he
- 26:37volunteered as a missionary to India
- 26:39and worked in Serampore, and as a
- 26:42result of his activities, numerous
- 26:44missionary societies and especially
- 26:47Bible societies were established. Even
- 26:52in our church commentary, it is
- 26:54generally considered that the modern
- 26:57Christian mission era began with the
- 26:59work of William Carey in 1793. In the
- 27:03150 years since he began his historic
- 27:05mission to India, the greatest
- 27:06conquests of the Christian faith have
- 27:08taken place. In step with foreign
- 27:11missions, Bible translation and
- 27:13distribution have progressed. If you
- 27:19look at the Korean Bible Society, the
- 27:22population using the total languages is
- 27:25estimated to be about 7.4 billion, with
- 27:2880%having the entire Bible translated
- 27:32and available, 11%having only the New
- 27:35Testament translated, about 6%having
- 27:38fragments or excerpts translated, and
- 27:41about 200 million people speaking
- 27:44languages with no Bible at all. 3%. Yes
- 27:49. So, it means that almost 98%are
- 27:52prepared to be able to read the Bible
- 27:55in their own language. But there are
- 27:597,386 languages, so about half of them
- 28:02still have almost no translation.
- 28:06However, these are languages used by
- 28:08very small ethnic groups. Our Adventist
- 28:13Church in 1844...At first, we thought
- 28:18the world was coming to an end. Then,
- 28:22through continuous theological study,
- 28:25we realized that the messages of the
- 28:28first and second angels were spread
- 28:31through William Miller's Advent
- 28:33movement, and that there was still time
- 28:36left to preach the message of the third
- 28:39angel. This became the driving force
- 28:43for world mission. Specifically, in
- 28:46Revelation 10, which explains the Great
- 28:49Disappointment, he says to me—we need
- 28:51to understand Revelation 10 accurately
- 28:54here. The prophecy of the birth of our
- 28:57Adventist Church is here. John was told
- 29:01to take and eat the little scroll, and
- 29:03when he ate it, it was sweet in his
- 29:06mouth; so when interpreting the 2,300
- 29:08evenings and mornings and expecting the
- 29:11second coming of Jesus, it was sweet.
- 29:14But when it went into his stomach, it
- 29:16became bitter. This is a prophecy about
- 29:18tasting disappointment. But it doesn't
- 29:22end there; what does the angel say? "
- 29:25You must prophesy again about many
- 29:27peoples and nations and languages and
- 29:29kings." This is where the Adventist
- 29:32Church discovered its mission. However,
- 29:36at first, we didn't think of this as
- 29:39the whole world. Because American
- 29:43society was composed of immigrants from
- 29:46many nations, we thought that if we
- 29:49preached the gospel to these immigrant
- 29:51groups, Jesus would return. But there
- 29:57were many difficulties when trying to
- 30:01evangelize. First of all, because the
- 30:04Advent movement had experienced the
- 30:05Great Disappointment, public meetings
- 30:07were not possible. And to hold public
- 30:10meetings, a lot of money is needed, but
- 30:12there were no funds. So, what we did
- 30:16was start creating and distributing
- 30:18publications. Yes. We began by creating
- 30:24and handing out tracts in German,
- 30:27French, and Dutch for immigrant groups
- 30:31in the U.S., and it spread worldwide.
- 30:36Because when people read them and were
- 30:38moved, they would send them to their
- 30:41relatives and families back in Europe.
- 30:43That is how Adventist believers began
- 30:45to emerge in Europe. So, there was a
- 30:48need to evangelize in Europe. We needed
- 30:51to officially send missionaries there.
- 30:54That’s why, in 1874, our church sent
- 30:59its first official missionary to Europe
- 31:02. That person was Pastor Andrews. He
- 31:08was fluent in seven languages and
- 31:10reportedly had the New Testament
- 31:13memorized. The entire New Testament. He
- 31:17had an incredible grasp of the Old
- 31:19Testament as well; he was a scholar, a
- 31:23prolific writer, a powerful preacher,
- 31:26and a capable theologian. In the U.S.,
- 31:30he served as the third General
- 31:32Conference president of our church and
- 31:34was also an editor of the Review and
- 31:36Herald. When sending him, Ellen White
- 31:40wrote to the believers in Europe, "We
- 31:42are sending you the most capable among
- 31:45us." That is what she wrote in her
- 31:47letter. At the time, his wife had
- 31:52already passed away. So, he was a
- 31:56widower, and he went as a missionary,
- 32:00taking his sixteen-year-old son and
- 32:04daughter with him. But when Andrews
- 32:10collapsed, the doctor examined him and
- 32:13found it was malnutrition. The doctor
- 32:17was shocked and asked how he could
- 32:18possibly live like that. Although
- 32:22Andrews received a salary, he used it
- 32:24all for producing tracts and God’s
- 32:26work, barely surviving on porridge
- 32:28while he worked. Then, his daughter
- 32:31contracted tuberculosis at the age of
- 32:34seventeen. Because of the malnutrition.
- 32:37He took his daughter back to our
- 32:39sanitarium in the U.S. for treatment,
- 32:42but at just seventeen years old, she
- 32:44could not recover and passed away there
- 32:46. Yes. Even though she had passed away,
- 32:51many church members and young people
- 32:54gathered for the funeral of the first
- 32:56missionary's daughter. Standing before
- 33:00his daughter, Andrews preached a sermon
- 33:03about world mission. Moved by this,
- 33:06countless young people volunteered for
- 33:08the world mission work. This became a
- 33:11grain of wheat that bore fruit. Pastor
- 33:15Andrews returned to Europe, but on his
- 33:18way back, he himself contracted
- 33:20tuberculosis. Eventually, he died at
- 33:25the young age of fifty-four. It is said
- 33:29that even a few days before he died, he
- 33:32was writing articles from his sickbed.
- 33:36This is how our Adventist Church
- 33:38expanded its global mission; there are
- 33:41235 countries or territories, according
- 33:44to statistics from the end of last year
- 33:46. The Adventist Church is present in
- 33:49212 countries. That means the Adventist
- 33:54Church has reached 90%of the entire
- 33:57world. Next, there are 97,800 organized
- 34:01churches. Then, the number of church
- 34:04members is 22.2 million. Yes, it has
- 34:08surpassed 20 million. The number of new
- 34:12converts usually exceeded 1 million,
- 34:14but due to COVID-19, it dropped to
- 34:16950,000 in 2021; however, it increased
- 34:19again to 1.358 million last year. So,
- 34:22if you calculate it, 3,722 people per
- 34:26day are coming into the Adventist
- 34:30Church every day. When they received
- 34:34the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, they said
- 34:363,000 were baptized in a day. The
- 34:39Adventist Church is not like that for
- 34:41just one day; from January 1st to
- 34:43December 31st, 3,700 people are being
- 34:45baptized and coming into the Adventist
- 34:47Church daily. So, it doubles every 12
- 34:51years. Yes. Now, we have come this far.
- 34:57We can categorize all the people in the
- 35:00world like this. First, those who
- 35:03haven't heard the gospel yet—they
- 35:04would be the most numerous. Next, there
- 35:08are people who have heard the gospel
- 35:10but haven't heard the truth. You know
- 35:15what I mean by that, right? There are
- 35:17many people who believe in Jesus but
- 35:18believe incorrectly. Then, a smaller
- 35:23number of people have heard the truth.
- 35:26But they cannot put it into practice.
- 35:28They cannot leave their church. Because
- 35:31so many ties are intertwined, they
- 35:33cannot leave. Then, who are the people
- 35:37who have heard the truth and put it
- 35:40into practice? It is all of you sitting
- 35:45here. You are here because you put it
- 35:47into practice. However, this number is
- 35:50very small. Our Jinrye Church, the
- 35:54members gathered here today—of course
- 35:56, there are many in other rooms and
- 35:58many listening via video, but compared
- 36:03to other individual churches with
- 36:05hundreds of thousands of members or
- 36:07other denominations, we are truly
- 36:09inevitably weak. That is why Zechariah
- 36:144: 6 says, "Not by might, nor by power,
- 36:19but by my spirit, says the Lord of
- 36:23hosts."
- 36:25So, the seed has all been sown. We need
- 36:28to do the final harvest, but no matter
- 36:31how hard we try, we are too weak to
- 36:34bring forth the final fruit. So, what
- 36:38do we need? We need to receive the
- 36:40Latter Rain of the Holy Spirit.
- 36:42Amen. When the end times come, the
- 36:45collapse of ordinary churches means
- 36:47they have departed from the truth. They
- 36:50are completely casting away the truth.
- 36:53And what happens to the church is that
- 36:54it becomes a dwelling place for demons,
- 36:56a place where all kinds of foul spirits
- 36:57gather, and a place where all kinds of
- 36:59unclean and detestable birds gather.
- 37:01What this means is that eventually,
- 37:03spiritualism will take over almost all
- 37:05ordinary churches. Since we do not
- 37:10believe in the immortality of the soul,
- 37:12if someone talks about spirits, we can
- 37:14cut them off immediately. That is Satan
- 37:17. That is fake. We know it right away.
- 37:20But those who believe in the
- 37:21immortality of the soul cannot help but
- 37:23be assimilated into this. Therefore,
- 37:25the church will be entirely dominated
- 37:27by spiritualism. At that time, Another
- 37:31voice from heaven said, Come out of her
- 37:33, my people, that ye be not partakers
- 37:35of her sins, and that ye receive not of
- 37:38her plagues. There are people who call
- 37:41out like this, and it is those who have
- 37:42received the latter rain of the Holy
- 37:44Spirit who do this work. So, while it
- 37:47is important for us to understand the
- 37:49truth above all else, we must receive
- 37:53the latter rain of the Holy Spirit to
- 37:55finish this work, hasten our Lord's
- 37:58second coming, and go to heaven.
- 38:01Now, what must we do during the
- 38:03remaining time to receive the latter
- 38:06rain of the Holy Spirit? First, look.
- 38:11You must be born again. Jesus said that
- 38:15unless one is born again, he cannot see
- 38:17the kingdom of God. The latter rain,
- 38:22which ripens the crops of the earth,
- 38:24represents the spiritual grace that
- 38:25prepares the church for the coming of
- 38:27the Son of Man. However, without the
- 38:30early rain, there can be no life. No
- 38:34sprouts will appear. If the early rain
- 38:38does not fall sufficiently to do its
- 38:40work, the latter rain cannot ripen the
- 38:42seed. If the seed has not been sown, or
- 38:46if it has not sprouted and grown, it is
- 38:49of no use for the latter rain to fall.
- 38:53So, the historical early rain has
- 38:56fallen. The question is, have you
- 39:00received the personal early rain of the
- 39:02Holy Spirit? What is regeneration? What
- 39:09does it mean to be born again? The
- 39:12Review and Herald states that being
- 39:14born again consists of having new
- 39:17motives, new tastes, and new tendencies
- 39:20. This When we say "tendency," it can
- 39:25be translated as inclination, but we
- 39:27must have a new disposition, not an
- 39:29innate one; a new disposition, new
- 39:31motives, and new tastes. To explain
- 39:35this easily with a diagram, this is "me
- 39:37." It is the "me" that was born. Here I
- 39:39am, right here. This is what I was born
- 39:42with. Born genetically and formed
- 39:44through the upbringing process in
- 39:45childhood, the "me" is shaped like this
- 39:47. This is sinful. Then, to be born
- 39:53again means that the Holy Spirit dwells
- 39:56within this "me." To put it simply, in
- 40:03practical terms, how does the Holy
- 40:06Spirit work within us? He enters
- 40:09through the Word. Therefore, we must
- 40:13listen to and learn the Word of God.
- 40:17When that knowledge accumulates within
- 40:20me, my innate thoughts collide with the
- 40:22thoughts received through God's Word,
- 40:25and when I nail my old thoughts to the
- 40:27cross, this Word of God begins to
- 40:29govern me. So we must realize the Word
- 40:34and always keep it in mind as we live.
- 40:38It doesn't help much if the Word just
- 40:41goes in and out. You shouldn't think
- 40:44about the Word while at church and then
- 40:46immediately become a worldly person the
- 40:48moment you leave. Always being
- 40:51captivated by the Word and living
- 40:53centered on the Word—the beginning of
- 40:55this kind of life is what it means to
- 40:57be born again. To be regenerated. That
- 41:00is what we call it. Second, you must
- 41:03mature. But speaking the truth in love,
- 41:08may we grow up in every way into him.
- 41:11He is the head, even Christ. So, to
- 41:16receive the Holy Spirit, we must not
- 41:19only be born again but also grow. In
- 41:23other words, our character must
- 41:25resemble that of Jesus. A seed
- 41:30represents the beginning of the
- 41:32spiritual life, while the growing grain
- 41:35is a beautiful symbol of Christian
- 41:37growth. Just as in the natural world,
- 41:41there can be no life in the spiritual
- 41:43world without growth. Sanctification is
- 41:48a work that must be accomplished
- 41:49throughout one’s life.
- 41:55In short, you should be at least a
- 41:58little different today than you were
- 42:01yesterday. Compared to last week, you
- 42:07should be a little less stubborn and a
- 42:09little less quick to anger this week.
- 42:14Amen.
- 42:15So, as you attend church, you should
- 42:17change little by little, bit by bit.
- 42:22But there are some who have been
- 42:24attending church for 30 or 40 years,
- 42:26and...I was talking to some deaconesses
- 42:31, and when I asked about a certain
- 42:33deacon, they said, "Oh, he's a fighter.
- 42:35" They’ve been attending church for
- 42:39decades, yet their nickname is "The
- 42:40Fighter." This should not be the case.
- 42:45If we illustrate this, as I mentioned
- 42:46earlier, this is being born again. It
- 42:49means God's word has entered into you.
- 42:51And that word begins to govern you.
- 42:54Growth means that I am becoming smaller
- 42:59, and the Holy Spirit and God's word
- 43:03are increasingly governing me. This is
- 43:08what we call being filled with the Holy
- 43:10Spirit. It means living not by my own
- 43:15temper, but judging and deciding
- 43:17everything according to the Holy Spirit
- 43:20and the Word. This is exactly what it
- 43:24means to be growing. That is why
- 43:27Ephesians 5:18 says, "Do not get drunk
- 43:29on wine.""Which leads to debauchery.
- 43:32Instead, be filled with the Spirit." It
- 43:35contrasts wine with the Holy Spirit
- 43:37here. You see, when you drink alcohol,
- 43:41it paralyzes the cerebrum. Likewise,
- 43:44the Holy Spirit is meant to govern our
- 43:46cerebrum. If you look at the brain, at
- 43:49the very bottom is the biological brain
- 43:51. Next is the limbic system, the
- 43:53emotional brain. And then, at the very
- 43:55top, is the cerebrum. The cerebrum is
- 43:58supposed to govern the emotional brain.
- 44:02Well-educated people can manage their
- 44:04emotions well, but our cerebrum is
- 44:07often "ill." So, who should govern the
- 44:10cerebrum? The Holy Spirit and the Word
- 44:13must govern it. Only then can we
- 44:18resemble Jesus, live a new life, and
- 44:20achieve spiritual growth. This is what
- 44:24it means to be filled with the Holy
- 44:25Spirit. Jesus was also filled with the
- 44:28Holy Spirit and was led by the Spirit
- 44:30into the wilderness. Jesus didn't go
- 44:33there on His own; He was led by the
- 44:35Spirit. Because Jesus was filled with
- 44:38the Holy Spirit, He followed the Spirit
- 44:40. Also, on the day of Pentecost, when
- 44:42the disciples were filled with the Holy
- 44:44Spirit, they immediately began to
- 44:45evangelize. Evangelism also happens
- 44:47naturally when we are led by the Holy
- 44:49Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit's
- 44:51guidance, handing out tracts on the
- 44:53street—if people ignore you or turn
- 44:54away—hurts your pride, and you think,
- 44:55"Do I have nothing better to do at home
- 44:57?" You get insulted and your pride is
- 45:00hurt, so you can't evangelize. But if
- 45:03you are led by the Holy Spirit, it
- 45:05doesn't bother you at all. Instead, you
- 45:07feel pity and just want to witness to
- 45:09at least one person. When the priests
- 45:13commanded them to stop preaching, they
- 45:16were filled with the Holy Spirit and
- 45:19spoke the word of God with boldness.
- 45:23Even fear disappears. Yes. This is what
- 45:27it means to be maturing. The state of
- 45:30being filled with the Spirit is growing
- 45:32stronger. The Word begins to completely
- 45:35dominate me. Third, we must also
- 45:39prepare the word of truth. We need to
- 45:43have an accurate understanding of
- 45:45present truth. I mentioned the messages
- 45:48of the first, second, and third angels
- 45:50regarding present truth, didn't I?
- 45:53Listen to those messages again. We must
- 45:55not only understand them but also be
- 45:58able to share them with others. Just
- 46:04hearing and knowing isn't true
- 46:08knowledge. You possess true knowledge
- 46:12only when you can explain it to someone
- 46:15else. Fourth, to receive the Holy
- 46:20Spirit, you must forsake sin. The Holy
- 46:25Spirit does not work in an unclean
- 46:27place. Acts 3: 19-20 says, "Repent and
- 46:33turn to God." Yes. Repentance is...
- 46:38forsaking sin. Conversion is completely
- 46:42changing the direction of your life.
- 46:46Until now, you lived to succeed in the
- 46:49world, but now you live to succeed in
- 46:52heaven. Until now, you sought worldly
- 46:56recognition, but now you live to be
- 46:59recognized by God. This is what
- 47:01conversion is. When this happens, "so
- 47:03that your sins may be wiped out." We
- 47:06will study this in our sanctuary
- 47:08service lessons; it teaches the work of
- 47:10blotting out sin. "And that times of
- 47:15refreshing may come from the Lord.""
- 47:20Times of refreshing" here means to make
- 47:23cool. To strengthen. To restore
- 47:27vitality. That is what it means. In
- 47:30fact, this refers to the work of the
- 47:31latter rain of the Holy Spirit. And
- 47:34when the final harvest ends, He will
- 47:37send the Christ, whom He appointed for
- 47:39you—even Jesus—and you will welcome
- 47:42the Second Coming. What happens when we
- 47:47receive the latter rain and go out to
- 47:48preach? It is from The Great
- 47:51Controversy, page 611, paragraph 6. The
- 47:54prophecies which were fulfilled in the
- 47:56outpouring of the former rain at the
- 47:58beginning of the gospel work are to be
- 48:00fulfilled in the latter rain at its
- 48:02close. And that is the time of
- 48:05refreshing that the apostle Peter
- 48:08anticipated. Now, as I said, the latter
- 48:10rain of the Holy Spirit. Then, bright
- 48:12beams of light will penetrate every
- 48:14corner, and the truth will be clearly
- 48:16revealed.
- 48:18Thus, God's honest children will break
- 48:21the cords that have been binding them.
- 48:25You have broken those cords and come
- 48:27out here, but there are still people
- 48:29remaining in Babylon who have received
- 48:31the truth but cannot break those ties.
- 48:33These people will eventually break
- 48:35those cords and come out. Now, family
- 48:38and church ties will become so
- 48:39powerless that they can no longer hold
- 48:41them back. Truth is more precious than
- 48:44anything else. Even if various
- 48:47institutions unite to oppose the truth,
- 48:49many will stand on the Lord's side.
- 48:53Amen. Amen.
- 48:54In this way, when the cry goes out in
- 48:56Revelation 18 to "come out of her, my
- 48:59people," a history will unfold where
- 49:01countless people answer that call and
- 49:04join in this truth. This is the final
- 49:07harvest. It is calling out the last of
- 49:09God's people. Therefore, the fifth
- 49:13thing we must do is to ask for the
- 49:15latter rain. Jesus said, "If you, then,
- 49:19though you are evil, know how to give
- 49:21good gifts to your children, how much
- 49:23more will your Father in heaven give
- 49:25the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
- 49:28Amen.
- 49:30Ask for the latter rain of the Holy
- 49:32Spirit. Pray. In Christ's Object
- 49:35Lessons, page 121, it states that the
- 49:37Holy Spirit poured out at Pentecost was
- 49:38the former rain. However, the latter
- 49:40rain will be even more abundant. The
- 49:43Holy Spirit is waiting for us to ask
- 49:46for Him and receive Him. It is not that
- 49:51He is not giving it, but that because
- 49:53we do not ask, and because we feel less
- 49:56of a need, the latter rain of the Holy
- 49:58Spirit is not working. Lastly, I will
- 50:02conclude by reading from Testimonies to
- 50:04Ministers and Gospel Workers. We must
- 50:07pray for God to open the fountains of
- 50:09the water of life. We must also
- 50:12personally receive the living water.
- 50:15With a contrite heart, let us pray very
- 50:18fervently that the showers of grace
- 50:21will fall upon us now, in this time of
- 50:24the latter rain. In every meeting we
- 50:29attend, we must offer up prayers
- 50:32beseeching God to impart warmth and
- 50:35moisture to our souls at this very time
- 50:39.
- 50:40Amen.
- 50:41Let us ask for the latter rain.
- 50:43Amen.
- 50:44I will conclude my message with the
- 50:45hope that we may soon end our time in
- 50:47this difficult world and that you and I
- 50:49will sing the song of victory together
- 50:51on the sea of glass in heaven.
- 50:53Amen.
