12 Breaking up the Silhouette of a Bridge — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:15Hello and welcome back everyone to
- 0:16Unreal Engine 5 beginner's guide to
- 0:18building an environment. In the last
- 0:20lesson, we created a basic foundation
- 0:22for the bridge. And now we already have
- 0:24a nice shape out of it, but we want to
- 0:27get a little bit more out of it by
- 0:29getting some additional detail towards
- 0:30it. So, let's go ahead and get into it
- 0:32right away. And to start it off, I think
- 0:34we're going to make use out of the other
- 0:36poles that we had previously. So, let's
- 0:38go back onto the 3D assets folder within
- 0:41the Mega Scans content. And we're going
- 0:43to get ourselves a wooden pole, I think
- 0:46it's called. Yes, it's a wooden pole.
- 0:48And we're going to make use out of this
- 0:50one over here since this is a really
- 0:52nice type of a wooden prop which already
- 0:54has some nice ropes going around it. And
- 0:57I think all in all it just gives off a
- 0:59really nice type of a look. So let's
- 1:01just go ahead and get it into our world.
- 1:04And let's rotate it by 90° just like
- 1:07that. And I'm thinking now that we are
- 1:09done with setting up a nice kind of a
- 1:11shape. I think we should go back onto
- 1:13snapping our grid as well as snapping
- 1:16our scale. So later on when we're
- 1:19working, it'll just speed up our process
- 1:21and help us get some nicer look for the
- 1:24environment. It'll just make sure that
- 1:26because we're restricted to our
- 1:28movements, it just gives us a more nicer
- 1:31of a pattern as we work with it. So
- 1:33we're going to click W, raise this up a
- 1:36little bit like so. And yeah, we're
- 1:38getting some really nice shapes out of
- 1:39this one. Of course, we should probably
- 1:42make this a little bit larger. So, let's
- 1:43go ahead and increase this in scale.
- 1:46Let's go ahead and see how it's going to
- 1:48look like with a value of 1.5. As you
- 1:51can see in the bottom right corner
- 1:53within the details tab, you can see the
- 1:55transformation values that I'm using.
- 1:57And 1.5 seems to look quite nice. Just
- 2:02trying to think of a way that we're
- 2:04going to be adding this up. This might
- 2:06be a little bit too tall, though. So,
- 2:08I'm just going to lower this down. We
- 2:10want it to be slightly sticking out but
- 2:12not by too much. And the purpose of
- 2:14these kind of poles is going to be well
- 2:16mainly to break off the visual detail
- 2:19out of our bridge, but we also got to
- 2:21make sure that it looks like it's part
- 2:23of the scenery. So, we're going to get
- 2:25it close to the edge of the bridge,
- 2:28which will not make it look like it's
- 2:30the foundation. doesn't look like it's
- 2:32going to support the bridge itself, but
- 2:34instead it's just going to look like
- 2:35maybe it's something that people use to
- 2:37secure their boats or maybe we just put
- 2:40like a fishing rod on the top section of
- 2:42this pole like so. And all in all, I
- 2:45think it just looks quite nice. So to
- 2:48start it off, because we're using only a
- 2:50one prop, we're going to do it in a more
- 2:52or less kind of a similar way to what we
- 2:54did with the supports of the bridge in
- 2:57which we're going to make use out of
- 2:58this one single pole to get some nice
- 3:01results. And instead of just using this
- 3:04one kind of a frontal section in order
- 3:06to get more variation out of this, what
- 3:08we're going to do is actually we're
- 3:09going to make a duplicate out of this.
- 3:10So, holding alt, dragging this out like
- 3:13so, and then clicking E, and then
- 3:15rotating this around just like that.
- 3:17We're going to get a different end. And
- 3:19this different end also has a bit of a
- 3:23rope coming with it. And we can see some
- 3:26chunks at the top as well that look
- 3:28quite nicely. Now, although this section
- 3:30is a little bit thicker. So, I think
- 3:34though because this one is a thicker
- 3:36piece, we might want to keep this as a
- 3:38taller one. and instead we'll lower the
- 3:41other one and that'll create some nice
- 3:43variation in height. So, we're just
- 3:45going to select this one, lower this
- 3:47down by quite a bit and I'm thinking
- 3:49maybe to this height and then we're
- 3:51going to lower the other one as well
- 3:53actually because we don't want it to
- 3:55make it look too different in heights.
- 3:59So, I think this is going to look quite
- 4:02nicely.
- 4:03So, I think we can also just Yeah, we're
- 4:06going to set the smaller piece to be in
- 4:09the corner. Doesn't have to be too
- 4:11close, but just enough to kind of look
- 4:15like it's going to be in this section
- 4:17over here. And the other piece, so the
- 4:19bigger one over here that we had, the
- 4:21taller one is going to be sticking over
- 4:24in this end. And I think we can just
- 4:26rotate this a little bit as well.
- 4:29I think to this amount of degrees. No,
- 4:32let's just go ahead and make sure it
- 4:34goes kind of follows the same flow as
- 4:37because they're two sticks together. We
- 4:39want to make sure we kind of have this
- 4:42sort of an angle. We might even rotate
- 4:44it a little bit diagonally like so. So,
- 4:47it's going to be facing the side just
- 4:49like that. I think it's going to look
- 4:51quite nice all in all. And then for this
- 4:54one, we're going to keep it as is.
- 4:57We might even actually bring it back by
- 5:00quite a bit.
- 5:01going to look much better like so. And
- 5:04yeah, by just doing that, we're already
- 5:06bringing a nice shape into our scene.
- 5:09Now, we want to make sure we get the
- 5:11same kind of a pattern throughout this
- 5:13entire bridge. So, let's go ahead and
- 5:14grab both of these and bring this to the
- 5:17other end like so. And actually, I made
- 5:21a mistake when I was dragging these out
- 5:23because I had a local gizmo turned on by
- 5:26accident. I got to make sure that this
- 5:28is set to a world position. So, by just
- 5:31clicking on this icon over here, we're
- 5:33able to change it. And by changing to a
- 5:35world position location of our gizmo,
- 5:38it'll just make sure that the gizmo is
- 5:40always facing that way, no matter the
- 5:43angle of our asset. So, that is going to
- 5:46be quite nice. We got to make sure we
- 5:48most often use this one and that we
- 5:52wanted to move our object in a specific
- 5:54kind of way. But anyway, moving on.
- 5:55We're just going to hold alt left mouse
- 5:57button and just drag it to the side.
- 5:59Just like that. And I'm thinking that
- 6:01maybe yeah, we might want to change up
- 6:05the way these ones are. So I'm going to
- 6:07have the shorter one on this end and the
- 6:09longer one on the other end. Like so. I
- 6:13think that's going to look quite nice.
- 6:14More or less. We want to keep kind of a
- 6:16similar gaps as we had over here. I
- 6:18think that's going to bring a nice look
- 6:20to our design. And then afterwards, we
- 6:24can grab those two and bring them to the
- 6:29end as well to the side as well. We're
- 6:32just going to grab these. Oh, let's hold
- 6:34Alt. Let's not forget to hold Alt to
- 6:35make a duplicate and rotate it around
- 6:3990°.
- 6:40So, this will be able to break off some
- 6:43edges on the very end of our bridge. So,
- 6:48all in all, I think this is going to
- 6:49look quite nice. We're going to make
- 6:51some variations to them in a bit. But
- 6:54for now though, let's just make sure we
- 6:56set them up in the right kind of an
- 6:58order. So I think this is looking quite
- 7:01nice. So now now that we have a location
- 7:05of these pattern set up nicely, we're
- 7:08going to play around a little bit with
- 7:09the variation to make sure that they're
- 7:11set up in the way that would bring out a
- 7:13more organic shape to our bridge. So for
- 7:16example, this one right away. I think it
- 7:18stands out a little bit too much when it
- 7:20just goes um with a flow downwards. I
- 7:23think I'm just going to grab this one
- 7:25and lower this down by a little bit.
- 7:26Like so. Also, we're going to rotate
- 7:30this around a little bit. We can rotate
- 7:32this by 180°. Just flip it around. And
- 7:36that way, we're going to get a much
- 7:37different pattern in comparison to this
- 7:39one over here. And for this one, I think
- 7:42we can also rotate this 180°.
- 7:47So, I'm just going to click Z because I
- 7:49messed it up a little bit. An easy fix.
- 7:52So, 180° like so. And then I'm going to
- 7:56raise this up by quite a bit actually.
- 7:59We don't always have to have the larger
- 8:01one to be sticking out at the front.
- 8:04Instead, we can sometimes raise this up
- 8:05and that'll change up the shape
- 8:07entirely. And I can see that these
- 8:09actually are sticking in the bridge. So,
- 8:10let's go ahead and slightly move them to
- 8:13the side and it's going to give us some
- 8:14really nice results in return. So, I
- 8:17think that's going to look quite nice.
- 8:19Finally, I think we should probably
- 8:20rotate this one around as well because
- 8:24this one is going to look more or less
- 8:26the same as this one in the back. And
- 8:28the shape all in all is just not going
- 8:31to look quite as nice. I think I'll
- 8:33rotate this one 90°. I think that'll do
- 8:35the trick. And of course, we got to make
- 8:37sure that it's not stuck within the side
- 8:41of the bridge. It's going to bring it
- 8:42back a little bit. And that's pretty
- 8:44much it. There you go. We now we're able
- 8:46to break up the shape of this bridge by
- 8:49quite a little bit and get a real nice
- 8:51result actually. So yeah, that's going
- 8:53to be it from this lesson. In the next
- 8:54one, we're going to continue on with the
- 8:56bridge. So, thank you so much for
- 8:57watching and I'll see you in a bit.
