1:44highly anticipated murder trial of Sarah
1:47Boon it was on this day that jurors were
1:50able to hear from of all people the
1:52defendant herself as Sarah Boon
1:54attempted to explain the chaotic events
1:57leading up to the death of her boyfriend
1:59George Tes Jr now here's what we know in
2:02February 2020 Boon was arrested at her
2:04home in Winter Park Florida near Orlando
2:06now prosecutors charged her with second
2:08deegree murder after she allegedly
2:11forgot that George was zipped up inside
2:13of a small piece of luggage where he
2:15suffocated investigators found videos
2:17taken on Boon's cell phone that showed
2:20George begging to be let out while Boon
2:23seems to laugh and calls him out for
2:26apparently cheating on her and since her
2:29arrest boon has gone viral not only for
2:32the bizarre and Insidious details
2:34revealed in the buildup to this trial
2:36and George torres's death but also she's
2:39apparently very difficult to work with
2:41Boon had various attorneys bow out due
2:44to conflicts of interest then others
2:46asked to be removed because working with
2:48Boon was basically impossible the judge
2:51decided that she actually forfeited her
2:53right to counsel and that she would have
2:55to represent herself at trial whether
2:57she wanted to or not but her her current
3:00Council swooped in at the 11th hour to
3:02represent her now Sarah Boon has claimed
3:05a battered woman's defense a battered
3:08person's defense and it does appear that
3:11she and George Torres were in an abusive
3:14relationship and essentially this
3:16defense is a way to justify self-defense
3:19the use of deadly force if you were
3:22subjected to repeated abuse now to be
3:25clear domestic violence charges had been
3:28filed between the two previously and
3:31photos of Boon's injuries allegedly at
3:33the hands of George were shown in court
3:35to the jury and Boon herself had a
3:38chance to tell her side of the story on
3:40Tuesday when she took the stand now she
3:43described how she and George had been
3:45drinking heavily for most of the day in
3:47question that they had been spending
3:49some time at home since they didn't have
3:51money to really go out she said that
3:53they had been playing puzzles they were
3:54doing some art projects and then she
3:57says that George wanted to play a game
3:59of hide and seek and shortly after that
4:02is when things took a very deadly turn
4:05so from here I'm going to let you hear
4:06it from the defendant herself Sarah boom
4:09take a listen um I don't even think I
4:12made it all the way down the stairwell
4:13because I was just looking for him as
4:14soon as I could um to hopefully go
4:16upstairs as soon as we could and
4:20um I saw I looked over and I saw him
4:23settling himself in the suitcase what
4:25did you
4:27do in my head I said oh man um we're
4:33obviously not going to be going to sleep
4:34anytime soon when you got up to him did
4:37he see you yes all right tell us what
4:40happened um I I
4:43mean I just kind of I zipped him up we
4:46thought it was funny and um we're joking
4:48about how he
4:50was guess small enough to fit inside of
4:53the
4:54suitcase all right so what happened
4:57there um from there it was just
5:00um we were laughing about it and
5:05um it was just strange that he was small
5:09enough to fit in there and then um I
5:13kind of moved it around a little bit
5:15with him in the suitcase still it was
5:18still funny that he was still in the
5:20suitcase just I think he and I were just
5:23kind
5:25of couldn't believe that he was he could
5:27fit in the suitcase
5:29did you eventually close the top yes in
5:33order for well the top was already
5:35closed as he was settling himself in
5:38there it was that's how I knew he was in
5:39there was because the top was kind of
5:41flopping a little bit so he had got in
5:44there to hide and he pulled the top yes
5:46on top of him but you could tell he was
5:47in there yes you saw him right away yes
5:50all right so at some point did you zip
5:53him
5:55up and what was he saying or doing when
5:58you were zipping him up we just thought
6:00it was funny um were you both laughing
6:04yes and um so you zipped him up were y
6:08all still laughing once you zipped him
6:10up yes okay so again according to Sarah
6:13Boon this was one big joke now they had
6:16consumed a ton of alcohol that day and
6:18as the night wore on she says it was
6:21George who started this hide-and seek
6:23game and that he was the one who
6:25voluntarily crawled into the suitcase
6:27but Boon admits that she's the one one
6:29who actually zipped him up inside but
6:32again according to Sarah Boon this was
6:34all just part of the fun so why was he
6:37struggling inside the suitcase well
6:39remember at the center of this case is
6:41this two-minute video where George is
6:43trapped inside of that suitcase very
6:45clearly heard saying he cannot breathe
6:47begging for Boon to let him out but
6:50according to Boon George was violent
6:52with her that he was violent with her on
6:54more than one occasion and especially
6:56when he was intoxicated so keeping him
6:58confined she says gave her a chance to
7:01feel safe from him take a listen that's
7:04when I I went over and decided to um
7:08videotape
7:11to just see the um I guess the the Gest
7:17in it for him to understand that right
7:22now I feel safe and right now I had the
7:24ability to actually speak to you um in a
7:28manner that normally I would would not
7:29have the ability to do and you were
7:34intoxicated yes and you would agree that
7:39you said some things you should not
7:42yes but you you realized he could not
7:45get out and get at you is that fair at
7:48that moment yes so the it goes on for
7:50about 10
7:53minutes um yes did you heard it here
7:55today did you not yes you heard you
7:58heard his voice voice as he was speaking
8:01from the suitcase yes that was his voice
8:04on the video in audio yes and you heard
8:06your voice on the video and audio yes
8:09that was your voice yes all those things
8:12said by the man were said by George in
8:15that two-minute video correct all the
8:18words said by the female were said by
8:20you in that two-minute video correct
8:23will you intending on showing him the
8:24video the next
8:26day
8:28yes at the time or the next day is it
8:31fair to say you don't even remember a
8:33videotape I do not okay
8:37so from what you can tell from watching
8:40it did that refresh your memory about
8:43that event it
8:47did why did you say all that
8:51I I want you all to know that I the
8:54majority of the time am always afraid
8:56and always scared all right what
9:00I understand that okay I understand that
9:03but um would it be fair to say
9:08that you had some anger at that point I
9:11did I would it be fair to say that you
9:14wanted to tell him off to some degree I
9:16just wanted yes for him to have a better
9:20understanding um which was the whole
9:21point of the videos and documentation
9:24prior and you could tell that he was
9:26uncomfortable
9:29I'm
9:30guessing and did did you want him to
9:33feel some
9:35uncomfort I did okay so in other words
9:39she's telling the jury that this video
9:41was her way to talk to George to get him
9:44to listen to her but also in that video
9:47she can be heard seemingly mocking
9:50George and reminding him of times where
9:52she says he beat her up now what is not
9:54on that video she says is George
9:57threatening to hurt her if he gets out
9:59of the suitcase it got very heated very
10:02quickly and he continued to push on the
10:06suitcase and um my fear was that he was
10:09going to break out of the suitcase
10:11knowing that it was a broken
10:13suitcase and
10:15um his hand started to come through his
10:19his hand started to come through this
10:21way and so I shook the suitcase I shook
10:24the suitcase trying to get his hand to
10:26go back in shaking it and telling him
10:29him that please stop doing this please
10:31please stop doing this to me please stop
10:34doing this to me so his hand his hand
10:36actually got out of the suitcase yes and
10:38you went to the suitcase yes and shook
10:41it yes did that Force his hand to go
10:44back in
10:46no um so you're shaking it were you
10:49shaking it to try to get the suitcase
10:51his hand back in yes how long did you
10:54shake it I don't know but his hand was
10:56still out yes was he trying to get out
11:00forcefully yes was he angry at you
11:09yes were you in
11:11fear
11:14always if he would have gotten out of
11:16the
11:17suitcase what would he have done to
11:20you like he used to tell me he probably
11:22would have made me unrecognizable or I
11:25would have uh lost my life okay that
11:27testimony is key to Sarah Boon's defense
11:30remember she's claiming self-defense
11:32that her life was in imminent danger if
11:35George got out of that suitcase and all
11:37of this fear stems from a history of
11:40alleged past abuse so we're at the point
11:43where George is doing anything he can to
11:44get out of the suitcase even sticking
11:47his hand through but Boon claims she is
11:49deathly afraid and is not going to let
11:52him out for the Split Second reaction
11:55that I had I happened to see that and I
11:57grabbed the baseball bat that and was
12:00trying to poke his hand to go back in to
12:03please don't go don't break through
12:05please so I hit his hand
12:09and you said you poked him with it yes I
12:12I kind of
12:14pushed um like I held it with the skinny
12:18part here and then so so the grip here
12:21Pro it at it yes you grab you grabbed it
12:23with both hands here yes and then the
12:26barrel of the bat the big part of the
12:28bat is here
12:29correct and you thrusted it into the
12:34different areas of the suitcase I
12:36started with his hand in his hand he was
12:38still trying to get out he was still
12:40trying to do that so I started to push
12:43on the suitcase around it hoping to have
12:47his hand retract and go back
12:49inside you made those injuries I
12:53did we've seen the photographs yes we
12:57see the the bruising is that from that
13:00bat
13:04yes
13:07eventually did his hand go back inside
13:10from you
13:11doing yes finally he had had subsided
13:16and retracted his hand so in your mind
13:18did you prevent him from attacking you
13:21absolutely did you believe that he could
13:23breathe in there yes did you ever
13:26believe he could die in there no no at
13:30all were you trying to kill him never
13:34did you want to kill him I did not let's
13:38set the stage one more time here to be
13:39clear Sarah Boon is admitting to not
13:42only zipping up George in the suitcase
13:45but also essentially shoving him inside
13:48of it first by shaking the suitcase and
13:50then even with a baseball bat So
13:53eventually the tense moment dies down
13:55and George stops trying to escape but
13:57she still doesn't let him out she just
13:59walks away heads upstairs now you might
14:02be wondering why didn't Sarah Boon just
14:04call the police at this point if she was
14:06truly this afraid of George Torres after
14:09all George is zipped up in the suitcase
14:11he can't hurt her from inside Well turns
14:14out she did make a phone call but it
14:16wasn't to the police it was to her
14:18ex-husband that's all she says she
14:20remembers before going to sleep leaving
14:22George Torres inside of that suitcase
14:24where he eventually died so what was her
14:27reaction when she found him the next day
14:30how did you feel when you saw the
14:32suitcase I don't think I've ever
14:34experienced anything like that before
14:36describe it for the
14:39jury I guess it
14:44was I was a gas
14:49and I just can't describe the feeling
14:52Terror to a certain degree I'm sorry say
14:55that again now it was Terror to a
14:57certain degree
15:01um I just can't describe it in words the
15:05feeling of
15:07remembering and then he was still in
15:13there so what did you
15:15do I immediately unzipped
15:19the I immediately unzipped the suitcase
15:22and I was screaming George George George
15:26and I was shaking him I was shaking him
15:28and and I pulled him out and I stretched
15:32him out flat and then I began instantly
15:35trying to do CPR and then was trying to
15:37look for a pulse or a breath or just
15:40anything and um was just screaming his
15:44name over and over and over again and
15:46come on George come on
15:48George and I continued CPR continued CPR
15:52and I continued CPR and um he was
15:55gurgling and what color was he what
15:59color was he yes he was purple it's at
16:02this point that Boon calls her
16:04ex-husband again who then tells her call
16:07911 and then George is declared dead now
16:11Boon admits on the stand that she lied
16:13to police and she gives more details
16:15that might support her battered person
16:18syndrome I ly to the
16:23police basically everyone because I
16:27was extremely fearful of being arrested
16:32I
16:34made first attempt of me calling 911 by
16:38telling them what happened and I thought
16:41they they were going to help me but
16:42instead I was arrested for calling
16:47911 so you made a decision to lie I did
16:51did you stay with that lie I did are you
16:55telling the truth today I am
17:00now let me take you back to the
17:08um to this
17:18incident is it fair to
17:22say that when George Torres is sober
17:29he commits no violence against you no is
17:32that fair to say
17:34yes is it fair to say that every time
17:37that he's intoxicated or every time that
17:40you're hit by him or harmed by him it's
17:43when he's intoxicated
17:48yes as a result when he's
17:53drinking does it change your
17:57outlook yes yes could you explain that
18:00to the
18:04JY I'm always
18:07fearful um
18:10paranoia why
18:13why because I try to protect and defend
18:16myself for fear something happens at the
18:18last ultimate
18:19second but you're always that way
18:21fearful is it because of these PRI
18:25incidences absolutely and by the way
18:28when we discuss battered person syndrome
18:31that usually can be characterized by
18:33these psychological effects that result
18:35from living with intimate partner
18:37violence according to experts this can
18:39cause a person to have flashbacks of
18:41traumatic events and increased sense of
18:43a fight or flight response to perceive
18:45danger even causing someone to take
18:48action to eliminate a Potential Threat
18:50so what exactly are these prior
18:53incidents that Boon testified to well I
18:55have to tell you her descriptions are
18:58really brutal and she says that they
19:01always occurred when George had been
19:02drinking and remember Boon testified
19:05that on the day in question George was
19:06drinking she knew this meant that he
19:08could harm her and George actually had
19:11been arrested for past instances of
19:13domestic violence the jury even as I
19:16mentioned got to see pictures of just
19:17how horrific this past alleged abuse
19:20really was and they heard countless
19:21stories of this including an incident
19:24where George apparently stabbed boon
19:26with a butcher knife is that you
19:31yes are those injuries to your arm
19:35yes were they caused by George Torres
19:39yes and during the same incident is this
19:42you
19:45yes is that an injury or bruise to your
19:48uh rib cage area
19:51yes you had to go to the hospital as a
19:53result of these injuries to you thought
19:56yes it's extremely painful is the
19:59depiction of the birn
20:04yes is that your thought my yes and your
20:08KN
20:10yes
20:13so George stabbed me in my
20:16leg I almost bled to death all right
20:19well let's let's go
20:21back and explain what led up to that I
20:26thought it would be nice to cook a nice
20:27steak dinner we don't have two nickel
20:29threw up together so I thought it would
20:31be special to make a steak dinner and
20:34big potato
20:36and go above the normal whatever's left
20:39over in the refrigerator and um and then
20:44um he came upstairs and saw that I had
20:47made the steak dinner
20:51and I don't know how to describe how
20:53drunk he was but it definitely was not
20:56George and um then he started to pull on
20:59me and kept saying that excuse me that I
21:02just want to you you on the steak and
21:05you on the on the potatoes and I took
21:08offense to that and I kept trying to
21:10encourage him to eat I started to crawl
21:14off of the bed to leave um just just the
21:17bedroom and he told me again that I'm
21:20not going anywhere and he stabbed me in
21:22my leg and it crunched you could hear a
21:26noise that it made and blood just
21:29started to come out of my leg just like
21:31a fountain here's a question you might
21:33be asking we're seeing these horrifying
21:35pictures we're hearing Sarah Boon's
21:37account of that night with the steak
21:39Knife why didn't she just leave
21:43George as anyone who has ever been in
21:47love
21:49or when you love someone
21:53or primarily someone or
21:56something you go above Beyond and you
22:00tolerate and you endure and you
22:01persevere
22:04and you try to make that person person
22:07as spectacular as you possibly can no
22:09matter the sacrifice that you may have
22:11to go through
22:14um
22:16to serve someone else um in a positive
22:19light so they can be better people
22:23for um themselves and to just make them
22:27a happier person
22:29okay that was the direct examination
22:31direct examination get to tell your
22:33story then you face cross examination
22:36from the prosecution and the prosecution
22:38here questioned Sarah Boon on a few
22:41different things and they questioned her
22:43as to how much alcohol she actually
22:45drank that day Boon testified under
22:48direct examination that she had several
22:49bottles of wine but as the state pointed
22:51out based on the size of the bottles
22:54this would actually turn out to be a
22:56really significant amount of one you go
22:59to Publix and you get that 1.5 L Magnum
23:01bottle of Woodbridge chardonay correct
23:05I'm not sure what Magnum is 1.5 L
23:07instead of the
23:08750s it's the double size it's like two
23:11bottles of
23:12wine okay yes so you got a 1.5 lit right
23:16yes it is the larger bottle and you got
23:18home and you at 100 lb and Mr Torres at
23:21103 lb began drinking this wine correct
23:24I'm I'm guessing so I'm not going to
23:27guess times well don't guess I mean you
23:29got home from Publix when was your first
23:32drink I'm not sure I mean we could have
23:34continued to do uh whatever was left
23:37over from what we didn't do before we
23:39went to Publix okay so you may have Dr
23:42started drinking even later
23:44correct then 12:30 when you get back
23:47from
23:48Publix I I I I don't know okay was it
23:511:30 or 2:30 when you began drinking I
23:54don't know all right was it before any
23:57of the phone calls to the brothers and
23:59the and his daughters
24:03yes and so you drink what's left in the
24:06mag the bottle of wine from the day
24:08before that's halfway label correct at
24:11some point and then you drink 1.5 L of
24:15wine and he goes out and gets another
24:17one on his own without your permission
24:19or suggestion about 5:30 correct correct
24:23and then you all consume that one as
24:25well and it ends up in the trash can at
24:27the end of the night correct
24:28apparently
24:31okay at what point in the night does
24:34your memory tape stop because you
24:36described that it wasn't on at 11:03
24:38p.m. when that photograph was taken
24:40what's the last thing you actually do
24:41remember prior to these videos being
24:46made I I don't recall at this point
24:51I I I don't remember now these bottles
24:54were apparently Magnum size essentially
24:57we're talking about two normal bottles
24:59inside of one big bottle that both she
25:02and George Torres reportedly both around
25:05100 PB consumed over the course of the
25:07day he had been angry on and on
25:09throughout the entire day okay you
25:11didn't tell us that earlier you said it
25:13was a wonderful fun day all day correct
25:15that's because I
25:17lived okay but you did not tell us
25:19earlier today that he had been angry
25:21throughout the
25:22day when would I say
25:24that you described your entire day of
25:28doing puzzles and arts and crafts and
25:33outside by the dart board and you said
25:35it was a wonderful day and everything
25:37was fun uh until he was in the suitcase
25:40did you not testify to that earlier
25:42today I did
25:45okay my specific question between these
25:48two movies is this is when he begins to
25:50get angry and trying to push his way out
25:53and to get out of the suitcase correct
25:55angry again yes okay and was expressing
25:59his anger in what Manner how did he say
26:02this at which point throughout the day
26:05ma'am you know very well that I'm
26:07talking about between these movies
26:09please answer my question between these
26:12two movies how did he Express his anger
26:14with
26:15you told me that I was going to die okay
26:19now this is happening after he's already
26:21told you several times he cannot breathe
26:23in the suitcase correct correct and he's
26:26been in there for
26:29whatever brief amount of time it took
26:31you to zip him up and it's the laughter
26:34stops and then you go over to begin to
26:36film
26:37correct and you're filming your purpose
26:40of filming is to kind of teach him a
26:43lesson this is your chance to say
26:45something to him when he can't say
26:46anything back to you
26:48correct no then correct
26:52me there was no lesson to be learned it
26:55was just I wanted him to
26:59try
27:00to understand how I felt so maybe he
27:03could progress and being a better person
27:06the next
27:07day so you wanted him to understand how
27:11you felt in the past and that's not
27:13teaching a
27:14lesson I just want to him to understand
27:17here it seems the state is really poking
27:20holes into Boon's self-defense argument
27:23Boon didn't testify to any violence
27:25happening prior to this and from her
27:27account she and George were actually
27:30enjoying each other's company that day
27:32where was the imminent danger now
27:34towards the end of her cross-
27:35examination sarab Boon actually
27:36demonstrated for the jury how she zipped
27:39George Torres inside of that suitcase
27:41where again she would ultimately leave
27:44him to suffocate and die can we see how
27:48it was that the two zipper parts were
27:50positioned when you say that Mr Torres
27:53was able to get his hand
27:54out if you want me to do it I'm fine and
27:57take your direction
27:59um from what I
28:02remember this is how the
28:15suit this was up
28:18here this was not this hard
28:24either so this was
28:28here okay right
28:39here about right there
28:42ma'am
28:44sure I assume this one was much
28:48closer it's not over there where did you
28:51where did you leave you asked me where I
28:52zipped it when when you say that was zip
28:55shut show us
28:58what you talking about how I zipped it
29:00or when you're done zipping it shut and
29:03he's inside of it where are the zipper

29:20components just tell me
29:23what I mean it was the
29:26corner corner I mean it's
29:33not yes this one
29:37was someone I can
29:39remember that's how he was coming with
29:43his hand out it was like this from the
29:45corner part
29:50okay thank you did you do anything to
29:54help him escape from the predicament
29:56that you zipped him up in
29:59no and right here at the very end of her
30:03cross-examination jurors are left with
30:05one powerful fact Sarah Boon did nothing
30:10to help George Torres out of that
30:12suitcase not when he tried to escape not
30:15when he told her he couldn't breathe
30:17that is a big point we expect the
30:19defense's case to continue we are going
