- 0:02these next videos deal with the topic of
- 0:06matter and measurement giving sample
- 0:08Alex problems
- 0:09regarding
- 0:11these topics in chemistry
- 0:15a few things for your memorize sheet you
- 0:18don't necessarily need to write these
- 0:21down but you do need to start memorizing
- 0:22these you need to know the SI units you
- 0:26need to know their names like leader
- 0:28unit abbreviations
- 0:30like leader will usually just refer to
- 0:33that as
- 0:34both of those as what's the unit and you
- 0:37could say leader l
- 0:38and then what is that unit measuring is
- 0:43it measuring volume or temperature or
- 0:45length or
- 0:46time
- 0:49and then
- 0:52learning the mathematical symbol that
- 0:55goes with each of these leaders are a
- 0:58measure of volume and the symbol for
- 1:00that is V
- 1:02so
- 1:04from the explanation to the first
- 1:06problem
- 1:07here's a list
- 1:08of units what they measure the dimension
- 1:13that's the type of measurement they're
- 1:15measuring a dimension
- 1:18a name a symbol
- 1:21and to this let's add
- 1:23the mathematical symbol
- 1:26length let's call that l
- 1:30we we could call it d
- 1:33um
- 1:34for distance but let's just call it l
- 1:38but whatever you want for that mass
- 1:40we're going to use
- 1:42m
- 1:43time or duration we're going to use a
- 1:45lowercase T upper and lower case matters
- 1:48on these because
- 1:51then sometimes there's confusion but you
- 1:53know I'm using a lowercase L for length
- 1:56uppercase L for liters but you know some
- 1:58places you may see them used otherwise
- 2:00so context matters
- 2:02but there are certain conventions
- 2:04M for mass is a convention that's used
- 2:08standardly if you use capital M it's for
- 2:11other things
- 2:13lowercase M gets confusing because it's
- 2:15used for lots of things
- 2:17lowercase t for time uppercase t for
- 2:20temperature
- 2:22volume
- 2:24uppercase V lowercase V is usually used
- 2:27for velocity
- 2:30so
- 2:33you memorize these and you're ready to
- 2:35go on to the problems
- 2:41the symbol of a simple unprefixed SI
- 2:44unit has been left off of each
- 2:46measurement in the table below fill in
- 2:48the missing unit symbols
- 2:51height of a tree
- 2:56meters
- 2:58minimum mass of an official Major League
- 3:01Baseball
- 3:03masses grams
- 3:06mass of an apple
- 3:09grams width of a football field
- 3:13meters what could you give us the
- 3:15justification
- 3:18just identify
- 3:21the dimension
- 3:28height Mass
- 3:34width
- 3:36just identify the relevant Dimension
- 3:38from the words
- 3:40and that justifies your choice of units
